Advice
lpa...a ticking time bomb! By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall
i
wrote some time ago that with pension freedom comes responsibility and if I ever needed an example of this it’s right here. A potential ‘later life financial crisis’ for four in five retirees who manage their own retirement savings has been identified, as no Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) has been set up. It’s estimated hundreds of thousands of retirees using pension drawdown to fund their retirement have not set up an LPA so that a friend or family member has the legal authority to make decisions on their behalf if they no longer can. This simple but extremely important financial planning oversight could prevent an individual trusted by the retiree from immediately stepping in to help them manage their affairs should they suddenly fall ill or lose mental capacity. Without an LPA in place, even next of kin would be forced to apply to the courts to take charge of a relative’s finances, without guarantee of success.
with this should you not already have a solicitor relationship. They should be able to recommend a firm that can take care of this for you as well as talk to you about the reality of not having one in place. At the same time it would also be a good idea to review your will and other arrangements, particularly in light of the revised and much improved inheritance tax reforms.
It is worth remembering that simple transactions such making an income payment, taking a withdrawal, stopping payments or making changes to a portfolio to reflect the current retiree circumstance, cannot be done without an LPA in place. Additionally, there is no guarantee who will ultimately be appointed to manage the individual’s affairs, making the whole scenario very scary indeed. Twice as many people are now choosing pension drawdown over the traditional annuity, thus putting the entire responsibility of managing their own income in retirement on themselves, yet this fundamental part of the responsibility is being missed. A good solicitor will talk to you about the need for LPAs however, in my experience, even they can miss the relevance to pension drawdown products. The need for an LPA is as great as, some might argue even greater than, the need for a will. If you have a pension drawdown, or if you are thinking of one for the future, arrange an LPA, and remember a financial advisor can help you

3. suzuki summer school Every year a Suzuki Summer School is held for flute and recorder players who come to Malvern from across the globe. This year’s pupils are putting on a concert titled ‘Swans a Songs’ on Saturday 4th August. Starting 7.30pm at Christ Church on Avenue Road, entry to the concert is free, although there will be a collection at the end to support the church.
It’s time for some ‘Maize Maze Madness’! Situated between Malvern and Worcester, Broadfields Farm re-opened its maze, created in a field of maize at the end of July.
5. autumn in malvern festival The annual Autumn in Malvern festival returns in September, with more than a month of music, art and poetry. Roman Simovic, the leader of the London Symphony Orchestra, hosts an afternoon of string music together with other members of the orchestra at Great Malvern Priory. Aldwyn Voices with violinist Miriam Kramer perform ‘The Silence in our Hearts’, a sequence of music, poetry and prose marking the centenary of the ending of the Great War. There’s also a free concert by Sovereign Brass, raising money for ARCOS in the Forum Theatre on the afternoon of Sunday 23rd September. www.malvernfestival.co.uk
The theme for the maze this year is Peter Rabbit, giving plenty to explore for children young and old. If you tire of the maze there are further games to play in the farm’s courtyard area, while food and drink will be available, allowing you to make a day out of your visit. DRIVING MISS DAISY Driving Miss Daisy is a transport service helping older people to maintain their independence. Whether it’s a visit to a friend, the supermarket or a trip to the doctors, this friendly, caring service is there to help. With three cars on the road they are just around the corner from you. ‘It’s not just about driving, it’s also about companionship’ says Alastair Cameron, who runs the service in Malvern. ‘We aren’t carers, but we do take extra care of our customers. We don’t just drop them at the supermarket, we’ll assist them around the store and are happy to unpack the groceries when they are home again. If it’s a trip to the doctor, we can accompany them and even report back to a concerned son or daughter.’ As well as Alastair, the other drivers are Katherine and Bev. They are all first-aid trained and DBSchecked. ‘Some people specifically ask for a lady driver which is fine’ continues Alastair ‘and unlike using a taxi company, you’ll know who is coming to collect you.’ The company has an operator’s licence from the local authority and carries out other duties including school runs. They also carry out airport or cruise drop-off and pick-ups at any time, seven days a week. ‘Our catch phrase is ‘We’re family when family can’t be there’ says Alastair. ‘We run a reliable service and our pricing is very competitive - you’ll be surprised at how cost-effective our service can be.’ All journeys must be pre-booked. LANGUAGE FOR FUN September is a time of year when we often try to think of ways to improve our lives. Giving yourself a focus, exercising your brain, meeting people and having fun are all things which can give you a lift in all sorts of ways, and these are all things which you can get from learning a language - if it is taught the right way. “Enjoying the learning process is just as important for continued motivation as the results of the learning,” says Dee Vincent of Language for Fun Malvern. “Many of our learners have previously dropped out of other language classes, but with us they have remained motivated and are coming back for more this term.” Dee Vincent has been teaching languages in Malvern since September 2017 and hasn’t looked back. It’s a double celebration of success for the Malvern mum as she celebrates the great fun and great achievements of her learners in their first year, as well as the 10th birthday of the organisation she teaches with - Language for Fun. Dee teaches French and Spanish, details can be found at languageforfun.org or you can call her on 07432 465649

Experiment in international living uk It’s that time of year again when we pack the suitcase and head for distant shores. Holidays are always a treat, but there is something unique and special about exploring a country’s culture from the inside. If you feel ready for a break from the routine and are curious to see the world in a new light, an adventure may be on the horizon... Imagine being welcomed into a warm family home, sharing conversations over a home-cooked feast and living like a local. Can you envisage really living in your dream destination, for a fortnight or longer? Why visit as a tourist when you can live as a local? EIL UK, based in Malvern, offers people of all ages opportunities to travel abroad and live and learn in a new culture. As one of the leading hosting organisations in the world, EIL upholds the ‘homestay’ tradition - an immersive approach that participants tell us gives them a deeper understanding and appreciation of a different way of life. Explore Singapore, Mexico, New Zealand, Cuba, Japan or Chile… From Ecuador to Italy, Chile to Japan, our experiential programmes are carefully crafted with a balanced itinerary of day trips, language lessons and plenty of time to explore the local area. We are especially proud to offer experiences to the adventurous over 50s. ‘’I was made to feel so welcome and comfortable...I loved the experience’’ - Feedback from Nina, on her homestay (Italy 2018)
EIL offers something for everyone, at all stages of life. Whether an internship to boost your career, the chance to study abroad or a volunteer role at a community project, this is your opportunity to quench that thirst for fresh experiences and return home with a spring in your step. If travelling is not for you but you enjoy learning about other countries and cultures, there is a way to bring the world to your home. Hosting an international visitor is a great way to share your enthusiasm for the UK and your local area. We are always looking for new families to join EIL’s host network. If all of this is familiar and you already know about EIL’s work in building a more peaceful, tolerant and understanding world, we’d love to hear from you. Perhaps you hosted an international visitor who became a lifelong friend. Or were you once a participant who went abroad? Please get in touch to find out more about our heritage project which will capture the history of one of the oldest hosting organisations in the world - the Experiment in International Living. If you feel ready to begin a new adventure, browse through our destinations at eiluk.org or follow our activities at facebook.com/eiluk If you would like to explore the world, talk to Sabine at sabine.spires@eiluk.org or 01684 56257. heartstart malvern Every year around 35 people in Malvern will have a cardiac arrest. Less than four of these people will survive. If the survival rate was as high as some other European countries, several more people would survive a cardiac arrest in Malvern every year. The higher survival rate in other countries is helped by more people learning simple resuscitation skills and the availability of public access defibrillators. Since its launch in January 2017, Heartstart Malvern has provided free resuscitation training, which includes how to use a defibrillator, to over 1,500 people including local school children. The charity has also installed 12 public access defibrillators around Malvern thanks to the very generous support from local fundraising groups and local people. Heartstart Malvern is now calling for more people to come forward to take part in one of their free training sessions. The training provided by Heartstart Malvern takes just over ninety minutes. In this time the charity’s volunteer trainers can teach anyone aged 10 years and over some very simple skills which could help save a life. The training is very practical and no previous experience is needed. The charity is also very keen to visit different groups or employers in and around Malvern to deliver training at one of their regular meetings or in the workplace. All that is needed for this is a large room and between about twelve and thirty people to participate in the training. Heartstart Malvern would also like to hear from local fundraising groups or businesses who can help them with their appeal to install 50 defibrillators around Malvern. If a defibrillator can be used to give a patient a controlled electric shock as soon as possible after their heart has stopped beating, there is a good chance that it will restart the patient’s heart. For every delay
26
of a minute between the patient collapsing and them receiving an electric shock from a defibrillator, their chance of survival decreases by about ten per cent each minute. Having more defibrillators located around Malvern for members of the public to use will reduce the time between a patient collapsing and being defibrillated. This will lead to lives being saved every year. Each defibrillator and special cabinet costs about ÂŁ1,600. Although this is quite expensive, it is a small price to pay for saving a life. Defibrillators are very simple and safe to use. Once the defibrillator is turned on it will give the user audio and visual instructions on how to use it. Using a defibrillator for the first time can be very daunting for most people. However, attending a Heartstart Malvern training course will give you plenty of time to practice using a training defibrillator which will increase your confidence in using a real one should the need arise.

Malvern Town FC A major million-pound upgrade of the facilities is underway at Malvern Town Football Club. Project 2020 will see the building of new changing facilities and the installation of an advanced artificial grass pitch, which will allow year-round play. ‘It’s the way things are going’ says Chris Pinder, the club’s chairman. ‘Of course one or two people have raised their eyebrows, but it means we’ll never have to call another game off due to bad weather.’ The improvements will cost around £1.2 million and are being funded through a grant from the Football Foundation, a charity funded by the Premier League and FA, alongside funds from the District Council and the club itself. The new changing rooms will be built alongside the existing clubhouse, the pitch will undergo further levelling and a perimeter fence will enclose the site. Car parking and the ground’s entrance will be improved and there will be enhancements to the energy efficiency of the clubhouse.
38
It’s a big investment for the site on Langland Avenue. ‘I’ve always believed this is the best place to be’ says Chris. ‘This will benefit not only local football but the whole community as well. I expect the new facilities will be used for other sports and we’re planning to work with local schools who will be able to use it.’ It’s hoped the work will start next year and be complete by the year 2020. ‘It’s only been possible thanks to the support of many people’ continues Chris. ‘The council gave us a lot of help in submitting our application for the funding. Members of the club’s board have brought a huge amount of skills and knowledge with them which has spread the workload and made the whole process a lot more enjoyable. We’ve created a club with a friendly atmosphere, a good place to come and support local football.’ For a list of pre-season games and future fixtures, visit the club’s website: www.malverntown.co.uk

Well Being
what about desire? I’ve just returned from a weekend of silent walking on the Malvern Hills. We walked nine miles south, and camped overnight, and nine miles back the next day. It was in the middle of the heat wave. Walking up to the top of Black Hill, where there is no shade, in the hottest part of the day, was a struggle – but the views at the top were breathtaking. Somehow the hard work and my aching legs made the view even more beautiful than usual, and the cool wind at the top was a real treat. On a cold day I’d have complained about the cool wind at the top, but in that moment it was perfect. This is often the nature of desire – we long for something to move us out of an uncomfortable situation. Usually after a while the new situation becomes uncomfortable, and we long for something else. How many people have said it’s too hot, that were complaining about the cold a few months ago? Our desires are inevitably frustrated: we long for a chocolate cake, eat too much and then feel ill, we can’t wait to go on holiday and when we get there we just want to come home again, and we always complain about the weather. One way out of this is to simply stop wanting things. That sounds like a pretty boring life, and it sounds like an impossible path to walk. It’s far better to get to know what we want, and how our desire works, and take it from there. If desire is always taking us towards something different from the present moment, sometimes it’s appropriate to look for something in the present moment to and sometimes it’s appropriate to ride the wave of desire, knowing that it is not leading you to a place of eternal happiness, but a place that you will want to move from at some point. Maybe I’ll go downstairs and enjoy having a snack. I know that if all I do is eat snacks, I’ll soon be sick of it, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t enjoy the first one. Getting to know our habit patterns around desire and frustration means that we can also take life a
42
By Kaspa Thompson little more light-heartedly. Knowing that desire is a wave that always wants to move forward means we can take its cry of “This one thing will make you happy” with a pinch of salt. We can enjoy where it’s leading us, without being taken in by its impossible promise.
Magic of Christmas Concert
There’s a place for discernment too, of course. Some desires are bound to lead to trouble, some are neutral and some lead to positive, pleasurable places. Learning to say ‘no’ sometimes, is just as important as learning to say ‘yes’. I’m reminded of Achaan Chah saying if the student strays too far to the left, you tell them to go right, and if they stray too far to the right, you tell them to go left. We can say the same about desire. Sometimes it needs keeping an eye on, and sometimes it’s taking us to exactly the right place. Sometimes self-denial is good full-stop. There are some things that are simply unhelpful to indulge in at all. Sometimes just a period of self-denial is helpful. There’s nothing better than a meal after a fast day, and the lemonade ice-lolly I bought from the ice-cream van, half way through the walk home on a hot, hot Sunday, was the best I’ve ever tasted.

David V Jones & Associates Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern
Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us
The shoulder blade (scapula) The scapula is the Latin name for the shoulder blade. The name may originate from a Greek word meaning ‘to dig’ because the shape of the bone in some ways resembles a trowel.
Where is it and what does it do?
The scapula rests over the back of the rib cage amongst a number of muscles. The upper outer part forms a shallow socket for the main shoulder joint. This joint is called the glenohumeral (GH) joint. The joint between the scapula and the rib cage is known as the scapulothoracic (ST) joint although this isn’t really a proper joint in the conventional sense. As the arm is raised from the side, 2/3 of the movement comes from the GH, 1/3 from the ST. The two movements occur concurrently in a complex way that is called the scapulothoracic rhythm. Any malfunction of this mechanism can lead to significant loss of shoulder mobility.
which are localised tender contracted regions in the muscle that can refer pain over a larger area. The part of the scapula that forms the shoulder socket may also become injured. For example the cartilage lip that forms part of the socket may become torn. This is known as a glenoid labrum tear and may require surgical repair.
Treatment
At our clinic we see large numbers of shoulder injuries many of which involve the scapula area. These problems are frequently treated using deep soft tissue manipulation and specific exercises. Medical acupuncture may also be applied to the muscles around the shoulder blade. More complex problems may require further investigation such as MRI scan and referral for surgical opinion is always an option in extreme cases.
What goes wrong with it?
Nerve injury in the neck often sends pain to the scapula area, the most extreme example being damage to the long thoracic nerve which can cause the shoulder blade to wing out from the chest wall. Injury and tightening of the muscles around the shoulder blade itself can also restrict movement. Some of the muscles that attach to the blade may also develop myofascial trigger points

Local Sport
table tennis club The new season at Malvern Table Tennis League gets underway in September. As well as regular competitive games, there are Sunday coaching sessions for every level of player, from beginners to the more advanced. Dave Steen tells us more. A Malvern Table Tennis League was officially formed at the end of World War Two. Despite competition from many other sports in recent times, table tennis continues to flourish in Malvern and the surrounding area. The league supports three divisions with a total of around 32 teams and we’re one of the biggest leagues in Worcestershire. We also hold a tournament at the Forum Theatre every March with around eighty competitors, from juniors to veterans. We also hold very popular coaching sessions which take place every Sunday evening through the winter months in the assembly hall at Dyson Perrins C. of E. Academy. Running on a Sunday from early September through until March, there are five qualified coaches catering for people of all ages and abilities. One of our objectives is to promote table tennis for boys and girls from the age of six years
upwards – it’s a chance for them to come along and give this fast and friendly sport a try. We usually have eight or nine tables out and we start with the beginners, which is often younger players. There are further sessions for intermediate and more advanced players, with each one lasting just over an hour. Some come occasionally and others every week, it’s completely up to the individual. Very often parents bring their children, get hooked and start playing themselves! Why not bring your child or grandchild along when we start again on Sunday 2nd September at 5pm. You never know, there may well be some hidden table-tennis talent just waiting to be discovered in Malvern! For further details you can speak to Gerald on (01905) 841510 or Graham on (01905) 428486. www.tabletennis365.com/Malvern

Piano
Are you interested in playing music for enjoyment? Did you learn an instrument years ago and would like to take it up again? Malvern has many music groups with space for new members.
Guitar Rob Harper leads two guitar groups every Wednesday in term-time at St Andrew’s Church in Poolbrook. The first class at 9am is for improvers. ‘This is for people who can play a few chords and have decided to take their playing further’ says Rob. ‘We learn the chords and melody for different songs and at the same time we learn some new playing techniques.’ The second class which starts at 10.45am is aimed at better players. ‘They might have played for a few years’ says Rob, ‘and we take it in turns to teach each other pieces. The music for both groups tends to be from the 1960s and 70s, covering pop, rock, folk, country and even some jazz. Many local players know Rob as he previously taught guitar at the college in Malvern. ‘I don’t push people to practise unless they want to’ he says, ‘and my philosophy is to give people the chance to come along because they enjoy playing. We hold an informal concert at the end of term which brings both groups together. It’s a great way for less experienced players to perform to a friendly and welcoming audience. Of course you don’t have to perform, you can just come along and enjoy the music performed by other members!’ To get in touch, call Rob on 07815 570707 or email robh2898@gmail.com
Nicola Nokes is a piano teacher, accompanist and ABRSM Theory tutor. Based in the heart of Great Malvern, she has students who are new to the piano as well as returnees. ‘Children make wonderful pupils’ says Nicola, ‘and its wonderful to see the moment when everything clicks and suddenly they are playing with each hand working independently!’ After completing a degree in music, Nicola went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London and then taught piano for more than twenty years at a school in London. ‘Here in Malvern, I find all my students are so very keen to learn. We’re very fortunate to have such a strong tradition of music.’ As well as children, Nicola teaches adults who are new to the piano and those returning to playing. ‘Playing the piano appears to have many benefits, not least helping to improve fine motor co-ordination and loosening the joints’ she says. ‘Some people pick it up again after a break of many decades. It’s a bit like learning to ride a bicycle, you don’t forget it, and after a couple of weeks of struggling, suddenly you are playing fluently once again!’ You can contact Nicola by calling (01684) 568636 or by emailing nicola.nokes@gmail.com For more ideas on taking up music locally, see our website allaboutmalvernhills.com

Theatre News
the wipers times Following sold-out UK tours in 2016 and 2017, and a critically acclaimed hit run in the West End, The Wipers Times will once again tour the UK this Autumn. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s satirical play The Wipers Times - a stage adaptation of their awardwinning BBC film - tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line. In a bombed out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mispronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the frontline. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the Top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. The Wipers Times will be on stage at Malvern Theatres from Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd September. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
