Welcome to the December issue of ‘All About Malvern’, now celebrating its first birthday! I always enjoy winning a competition, especially one that could help me with my christmas shopping! The traders in Barnards Green are offering the chance to win £100 of shopping vouchers and a big box of chocolates. All you need to do is log onto the website, the winner will be drawn at their christmas event on the 11th of the month. There’s more information on Page 36. The weekend before, Malvern’s lights switch-on event promises to be as great an event as ever. Indeed, the event provided the first ever feature for this magazine, when we launched exactly a year ago. We’re not the only ones celebrating, The Beauty Spot on Belle Vue Terrace is one year old, the fashion boutique Isis is moving into new premises on Church Street while the daughter of the owner opens a shoe shop of her own in the town centre. As christmas is just around the corner, if you’re out looking for presents, an outfit or a treat for yourself then please don’t forget our local traders. Have a lovely December Sascha, Publisher & Editor

Parrys of Malvern David Siviter expects Trollbeads to be one of the ‘must have’ items among his customers this Christmas. The beads and bracelets from Denmark sold so well at Parrys on Church Street last year that the range has been expanded this December.

‘There are so many different designs and colours within the range to choose from’ says David, ‘the beauty is you can personalise the gift according to the person you’re buying for. Because the range is so big, we have customers who have become quite avid collectors’. This Christmas their Trollbeads ‘debut bracelet’ is being offered for £99 which includes a silver bracelet, lock and two beads; additional beads can be added from £25 each. Parrys are also stocking a range of contemporary silver jewellery from designer Kit Heath, another gift they expect to be popular. Choosing a personal gift can be a challenge and Parrys Jewellers pride

themselves on being able to offer you expert help to make sure you choose the best gift. ‘We offer a friendly welcome to anybody looking to buy a gift for a loved one and will spend time explaining the different possibilities’ says David. As well as contemporary items Parrys also stocks more traditional diamonds and pearls, as well as watches from Tissot, Rotary and Lorus. Their range offers something for most budgets, and thanks to the high prices that gold is currently fetching, they’re offering to buy old jewellery from you, or part-exchange it for something new. You can pop into the shop on Church Street for more information and a friendly chat.

All About... ...the Hockey Club Colwall and Malvern Hockey Club started two years ago when Colwall Hockey Club and Malvern Hockey Club merged. Coral Handley is the club Chair, and through the years has had many roles including 1st Team Captain.

Who plays for the club?

All sorts of people, we have players from eight years upwards and our oldest player is in her seventies. In all we have over thirty members and two teams. We train on Wednesday evenings at Malvern St James during the season, when the league players are joined by the juniors and players who just want to train to improve their fitness. The best thing about hockey is that it’s sociable, caters for players of all standards, gets you out in the fresh air, and means you can play as part of a team.

And what is so good about your club?

The best thing about our club is that there’s a friendly atmosphere, and we never turn anybody away for not being good enough! We believe the most important thing is for people to be able to play a game of hockey, and to improve if they want to, regardless of their age and standard. Our club’s main aim is to provide recreational hockey in a friendly atmosphere, rather than to be ultracompetitive. Some of our current players have played representative hockey and also played for Colwall when it was in the National League. Today we play in the West Clubs League, the 1st team playing in Severn

Division 1, the 2nd team playing in Severn Division 3. We’re hoping that both teams will end up in the top half of their respective tables this season.

I

s it just about sport or is there a social side to the club as well? It’s not just about sport - there’s definitely a social side to the club as well! After every home match, we entertain the opposition at the Brewers Arms in West Malvern, who kindly provide chip butties for everybody. We also have Christmas and end of season get togethers every year. We run an annual charity fundraising tournament just after Christmas - the Trevor Marston Memorial Tournament, in memory of the former landlord of the Brewers Arms. This season, it’ll be played on the 8th January 2011, and money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Where do you play?

The club plays on the artificial pitches at the Malvern St James Sports & Fitness Centre. There’s regular information updates on the Colwall and Malvern Hockey group on Facebook and you can find more information about the club on our web site www.colwallandmalvernhc.webs.com

If anybody would like more details they can also contact me (Coral) on 07773 491203. Alternatively you can just turn up on a Wednesday evening!

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

This month: The case of the numb hand

In practice many patients visit me with pins and needles, numbness, and pain due to nerve irritation in the neck, low back or elsewhere. Tracking down the problem is a little like the work of an electrician trying to detect faulty wiring. This case was a particularly good example of such detective work.

What was the history? Mr X was a 49 year old carpenter who came to me with numbness and tingling in the whole of his left hand. This had started relatively rapidly four weeks earlier. He was otherwise fit and healthy but had done heavy work all his life. Any cardiac concerns had already been ruled out at the local hospital with an ECG and blood tests. This left me looking at a potential nerve problem. Significantly Mr X was left handed and had been using a manual screw driver excessively in the course of his work. What were the findings? Mr X showed no gross abnormalities on neurological examination with reflexes and muscle

The new clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

power normal. However his neck was stiff and the muscles toward the front of his neck on the left side were extremely tight (due to overuse and “wear and tear”). What was the treatment and the outcome? On the first session, I loosened up his neck using hands-on manipulation and deep muscle massage. By the second session, the numbness had gone from his ring finger and little finger but remained in the others. Further inspection revealed severe tightness in the forearm muscles (due to the screwdriver work). Two further sessions working on the forearm cleared the remaining symptoms and he was able to return to work but encouraged to use an electric screwdriver! This was a particularly interesting case. Initially the symptoms appeared to be one single problem but were in fact caused by two separate nerve irritations: a C8 nerve root irritation in the neck due to a flare up of spondylosis and an irritation of the median nerve by overused muscles of the forearm (so called “pronator teres syndrome”).

Treatments cost £35 per session. For an appointment or informal chat ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

Healthy Christmas! I’d like to start by wishing you a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year!

By your local expert Allison Maxwell

‘Healthy’ and ‘Christmas’ in the same sentence? It can be hard to imagine, I agree. To my way of thinking there’s nothing wrong with a bit of festive indulgence when it only comes once a year. However, if you’re used to eating healthily, or on a mission to lose weight, you don’t want to abandon your principles entirely. There’s a lot you can do to create healthy Christmas recipes in all sorts of small ways, to make your Christmas dinner healthier and lower in fat without compromising on taste or enjoyment.

Healthier options at Christmas without missing out

Turkey is by far the best choice for a healthy Christmas dinner, the meat is less fatty than goose or duck. Roast your turkey on a rack so it doesn’t bathe in fat as it cooks, later on you can skim the fat off the gravy. Its also good to make your own stuffing, some packet mixes contain unhealthy hydrogenated vegetable oils. If you are in charge of shopping for Christmas food, only cater for the number of people you are feeding and not for an imaginary tribe of relatives or friends. You can still buy rich food to enjoy, but only buy enough for just a couple of days and no more. Don’t feel that you have to be a Scrooge-like killjoy at Christmas, it is a time of celebration after all! A large meal once a year won’t do you any harm, but make use of healthy Christmas recipes, include healthy soups and salads in between those calorie-laden foods. After a big Christmas lunch, its tempting to lie down on the sofa to nap or watch a film. That’s the worst thing you can do for your heartburn. Food is still in your stomach for the at least the next three hours, lying in wait to cause reflux. If you must go from mashed potatoes to couch potato, at least sit up with your head

22

above your stomach or take a walk. There are plenty of healthy alternatives to high-sugar and fat-laden Christmas foods. I have chosen this recipe as its fat-free and almost sugar-free. To be even healthier you can substitute the brown sugar for date syrup or agave syrup, available from a good quality supermarket or health shop.

No-fat Christmas Pudding

As mentioned above, this pudding is much lighter and completely fat-free. It’s also vegetarian, so make this one if you have non-meat eaters coming round. This pudding will not keep for very long. So don’t make it more than 2-3 weeks before Christmas. To serve four: • 2 medium-sized apples • 2 bananas • 50g (2oz) walnuts • 50g (2oz) almonds • 50g (2oz) hazelnuts • 4 eggs • 150ml (5 fl oz) milk • 1 tsp mixed spice • 450g (1lb) mixed dried fruit • juice and grated rind of 1 lemon • 1 tsp salt • 450g (1lb) freshly made wholemeal breadcrumbs • 50g (2oz) soft brown sugar 1. Grate the apples without peeling them. Peel and roughly chop the bananas and nuts. Break the eggs and whisk with the milk. 2. Mix all the ingredients together and stir well. 3. Place into one or two well-greased pudding basins and cover with folded greaseproof paper. Tie round with string. 4. Steam for 3-4 hours in a covered pan with 5cm (2in) simmering water. Check the water level at intervals and don’t allow to boil dry. Then cool and store. 5. To re-heat, steam for an hour before turning out. Recipe courtesy of www.essentially-england.com

The centre of Malvern’s getting a new shopping area. The Courtyard will be a mix of retail units just off Belle Vue Terrace at the top of the town centre. Its the idea of Adrian Ward, who’s run the Robson Ward furniture showroom on the site for many years. ‘We’re staying open, but we’re creating a mix of smaller retail units alongside our showroom that we hope will give small businesses the chance to open up in the town centre’ he says. ‘The aim is to create a new shopping experience. I foresee a cafe in the complex as well as shops selling things like jewellery, crafts, clothing and fashion’. Adrian first had the idea several years ago, but business was so brisk he never had the time to realise his idea. He went into business 42 years ago in 1968 after making his own kitchen. The quality impressed a friend so much he was asked to create a second kitchen. A positive review in a Birmingham-based newspaper saw a further 81 enquiries. He began making the kitchens in a former Water Bottling Works in the centre of Malvern, and developed the site into his shop.

‘The aim is to create a new shopping experience. I foresee a cafe in the complex as well as shops selling things like jewellery, crafts, clothing and fashion’

Now its time to develop the site further, a move he hopes will increase the numbers of shoppers coming into Malvern. ‘Recently Belle Vue Terrace has seen a growing number of really interesting, specialist retailers’ says Adrian, ‘and I hope we can add more space to allow this to continue. Robson Ward will of course remain on the site, everything we make is still bespoke, designed and built individually for clients, and certainly not ‘off the shelf’.

Lizzy’s Recipe marzipan makes these Mince Pies The festive mince pies extra special. • 100g plain flour • 100g self raising flour • 100g margarine cut into cubes • 1 tbsp caster sugar • zest of 1 lemon finely grated • 2 -3 tbsp water • 75g marzipan • ½ jar mincemeat (about 250g) • icing sugar for sifting

Makes 12. Ready in an hour.

1. Heat oven to 200°/Gas 6. 2. Sift flours and caster sugar, add lemon zest and chopped margarine. Rub margarine into flour. Add water and mix until the dough comes together. Wrap in cling film and chill for 30 minutes. 3. Roll out pastry and cut 12 rounds. Line a 12 hole bun tin. Place a small piece of marzipan in each pastry case and add a spoonful of mincemeat. Roll out the pastry trimmings and cut out 12 star shapes. Place a star on each pie. 4. Bake the mince pies for 15 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes then place on a wire rack. Dust with icing sugar before serving. Using a mixture of flours makes this pastry really light. It can be made in advance and frozen.

Want to eat a more healthy diet? Tired of eating the same meals? Find recipe books complicated? Our Lizzy cookery sessions are open to all, regardless of cooking ability. Small group demonstrations and hands on cookery in a relaxed friendly setting in Malvern. See www.ourlizzy.com or contact Lizzy 01684 892688 for more information.

Community Focus NSPCC Fact File

Organisation: The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Contact: Sarah-Jayne Williams Role: Community Fundraising Manager Contact: 01386 49627 More information: at www.nspcc.org.uk ChildLine – 0800 1111 / www.childline.org.uk NSPCC Helpline for adults worried about a child – 0808 800 5000 / help@nspcc.org.uk

The Malvern branch of the NSPCC held a special event recently - a book signing by Gwen Gowan, who autographed copies of “Monty Mouse Sees the World”, a story for children which she created in 1955. Gwen, now a resident of Upton upon Severn, is a strong supporter of the NSPCC, and profits from the sale of the little book are being donated to the Society. The NSPCC works right across the UK to end cruelty to children, and our local services focus on the most acute forms of abuse and the most vulnerable, highest risk children. We also run ChildLine, a round the clock helpline for children and young people to call about any problem they may have. There are ChildLine bases around the country including Birmingham. Between April 2009 and March 2010 our counsellors in Birmingham handled 18, 568 contacts by phone and online. The most common issues children called about were bullying, family relationships, physical abuse, sexual abuse and the facts of life. We also have the NSPCC Helpline which is for adults to call if they have concerns about a child. It provides specialised support, advice, counselling and information for anyone who is worried about a child at risk of abuse or who is being abused. Obviously we cannot run these vital services without help. 82% of our income is from supporters and without this continued generosity we wouldn’t be able to continue our services to help children. Sometimes help comes in the most amazing ways such as Malvern’s “Monty Mouse”. The book tells

30

the story of a young mouse who, bored with his comfortable life as a pet, sets out to have adventures. Gwen wrote the story and painted all the fifteen watercolour illustrations. Monty’s adventures were based on the toys in her son’s playroom, especially his train set. Gwen writes in her foreword to the book: “The railway station was rapidly supported by roads, level crossings, bridges, tunnels, cars, buses, hedges and ditches. The town grew and included a garrison of soldiers, who luckily all survived the interest of the family cat, Tiger.” After an encounter with the fearsome ginger cat, Monty experiences the delights and perils of life in the town and even has a reluctant role in a military skirmish. All ends happily, with his return to his welcoming family. The book was a family favourite and last year was introduced to a wider public when it was printed by Malvern publishers, Aspect Design, in a layout which is faithful to the original handmade copy. It has proved a great success with children, particularly those aged three to six, and their parents and grandparents appreciate its period charm. It is also just the right size for a Christmas stocking! Aspect Design at 89 Newtown Road, Malvern are generously selling the book (cost £5) with no commission. Copies can also be obtained from Marna Gowan at david.gowan@btinternet.com or Sara Kitching at sarakitching@macunlimited.net
