Seasons Greatings! Putting this magazine together is a lot of work, but none of what we offer is possible without our dedicated team of deliverers. Almost forty people are involved in putting the magazines through doors locally. They head out, whatever the weather, to make sure it gets to your home. Thank you deliverers! I am especially proud of the photos in this edition; from the winning picture of the outdoor photographic exhibition - which secretly was my favourite - to our own compilation of pictures of the day. It shows the richness and beauty of our area in which we are priviliged to live in. Rest me to wish you a very happy Christmas and a good start to 2014. Enjoy the local shopping!

Advice
Courage with Caution for 2014... By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall What can we expect in 2014? More market volatility, higher interest rates, increasing inflation, falling saving rates, mortgage costs rising? Nobody knows, but what we can all do is be prepared. A leading think tank predicts the UK economy will grow by 2% in 2014 which is fantastic news if you are able to take advantage of it, otherwise it could mean rising interest rates on borrowing and higher inflation. If your finances are not correctly aligned, not only will you miss out on the positives, such as growth on your investments, you will find your safe investments such as bonds could fall dramatically in value very quickly. At the same time your long term borrowing, such as mortgages, will rise quickly as the lenders will look to increase their fixed rate and tracker deals long before Governor Mark Carney raises the base rate from its historic low. Areas to look at in early 2014 should be: Investments These can include Pensions and lump sum Investments, as in order to take full advantage of the expected growth you should ensure you have a fully diversified risk rated portfolio which can tap in to the rise in equities both here and abroad. You should also maintain a degree of caution, as we are not only susceptible to the weaker European markets such as Spain and Greece, but also the potential debt problem that still haunts the USA. Savings Some would argue growth and rising interest rates can only be a good thing for savers, and they would be right, but there are an awful lot of savers with too much on deposit, losing real value when inflation is considered. It will be many years before savings rates keep pace with inflation, so if you are one of those people who have too much sat in cash, maybe 2014 is the year to consider re-balancing your cash requirement and move some funds into a risk

I am Rob Weale, a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. The article has expressed our views and opinions and is based on current market conditions and is subject to change without notice. We can help you make the critical decisions, manage your
rated portfolio to take full advantage of the growth prospects being reported. Mortgages Long before the base rate rises, lenders are likely to start to increase their fixed rate deals, so maybe 2014 is the time to secure a rate you are comfortable with and take the worry out of future rises. The Help to Buy scheme has certainly started to help the housing market, and get activity, but of more interest to me is the types of interest rates these mortgages are trading at, as I feel they are indicative of where lenders see rates going in the next few years, and they are considerably higher than those available to regular borrowers today. Equity Release The story with equity release is much the same as with regular mortgages, in so much as rates are expected to rise, so again, maybe 2014 is the year to consider raising capital in this way. Since most if not all equity release contracts fix the interest rate for life, taking advantage before a possible rate rise could prove prudent. Retirement Income Rising interest rates and falling bond prices could mean improving annuity rates; however history tells us any real improvement in annuity rates takes years to filter through so don’t bank on any rise soon. Annuities continue to offer income at historically low rates so you must ensure you shop around, using your right to utilise your open market option, a qualified independent financial adviser will help you seek out the most appropriate and best annuity out there. There is every reason to be optimistic about 2014 after the previous five years, we deserve some good news, but as with anything, a word of caution; the value of your Investments may drop as well as rise, so maybe the best course of action is take advice, diversify, and most important of all, be prepared, as those that fail to plan, plan to fail. investments, pensions, income and borrowing. We will enable you to choose the very best solution tailored to your individual circumstances. We welcome your enquiry.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Home tips
give a local book this Christmas If you’re stuck for gift ideas, or you’re looking to treat yourself, here’s a selection of books written by local people. Afterwards by Satya Robyn April isn’t just running the London marathon. She’s running to freedom. Still living at home and doing a job she hates, April is desperate to shake up her mundane existence but can’t find the courage. A serious accident leaves her with a different set of problems, but also the hope of a new beginning. Both on and off the running track, she faces challenges she had never imagined. With the help of her new friend Art, a retired drag queen, and Al, her obstinate coach, April starts to reinvent herself. Will she reach the finishing line, and will all the pain and anguish be worth it? Afterwards is the new novel from the Malvernbased author of The Most Beautiful Thing. Compelling and illuminating, it reminds us that it is never too late to begin over again. Visit www.allaboutmalvernhills.com for details of how to buy a copy of the book. Malvern Mayhem Mysteries by Jill Peer Jill Peer published her first three books this year. The first one is Malvern Mayhem Mysteries, a set of amusing short stories and poems, mostly based around the town. This book contains some adult material. Jill’s second book is Magical Malvern Mayhem Mysteries, a book aimed at the young and the young at heart. In the book, a group of imaginary characters, an owl, a cat, a chocolate labrador, an elephant, a snake, a dragon, a wizard and a mouse go on an adventure together. Victorian Malvern Mayhem Mysteries and More is the third book with two stories and a poem.
10
The main story is about a hard working young victorian girl who has many misfortunes. The book contains some adult material because it illustrates the hardship and difficulties of women in victorian times. All of Jill’s books contain her own illustrations, many depicting local areas and are available locally from The Malvern Hills Gallery, The Malvern Book Co-operative, The Link News, Malvern Link Post Office and Ledbury Books & Maps. My Wildlife of Poetry by Tim Stavert This book is based on everyday occurrences, including things which have happened to Tim, his family, friends or pets. However, to get the full atmosphere in the stories, some have been slightly exaggerated, bringing extra humour and imagination. As a lover of wildlife since a boy, Tim was inspired to write many stories. After writing for more than twenty years he branched into poetry in 2012 when he reached the finals of the Worcestershire Poet Laureate competition. This inspired him to write “My Wildlife of Poetry”. Many poems in this collection involve humans, as we all have some wild streaks in us, showing how daft we can all be at the best of times. Each poem has an introduction and illustration, to help give an idea of the poem’s content and its inspiration. The illustrations are from past and present drawings and photos, which have further influenced the poems as well as stories. The book is available from The Malvern Book Cooperative on St Ann’s Road in Malvern or directly from Tim’s website timothypstavert.co.uk A donation from each sale will be given to an animal charity.

MOLEY JOE
Moley Joe by Glenda Ramsay ©
es d d lu c c e In fre
Moley Joe was a special mole. He was a mole puppet. Everyday he was brought to life by his friend the puppeteer in the puppet theatre where he Glenda Ramsay performed shows with all his puppet friends to children everywhere. But one day the puppeteer began to feel rather old and tired so he decided it was time to have a rest and retire. After a while, even though Moley Joe was enjoying having a rest he was missing all the children and the children were missing him and his friends too, but very soon he had an idea. He decided to write some stories about the adventures that had happened to him and his pals when they were performing his shows. So children – when you turn this page of your book you will meet ‘Moley Joe’ and all his friends in the ‘Adventures of Moley Joe.’ The book is available from The Malvern Book Cooperative on St Ann’s Road, Aspect Design Bookshop Publishers & Aquarius in Malvern.

magical christmas
Barnards Green is going to have a’ magical’ feel this Christmas at its annual Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday 7th December, from 10.30am until 2pm. There will be three FREE twenty minute Magic Shows for children happening throughout the morning and lunchtime plus some festive balloon modelling. The first thirty children to book their place will be able to paint a Christmas pottery decoration for free at Green Frog Pottery. But don’t worry if you miss that slot as we have Christmas craft activity tables to get creative at, with lots of helpers, glitter and glue. Older children will have the chance to create their own beribboned spiced orange pomander. Plus there will also be a demonstration of circus skills with plenty of opportunity to join in, and it’s all for free! We are holding a ‘Best home-made Christmas Decoration’ Competition with local school children. If you bring along your decoration with tag attached saying your name and age, it will be hung on our tree and then judged. There are two £15.00 prizes for age groups 5 years and under and 6 to 11 years. The really nice thing is the tree with its decorations will then be displayed in the Malvern Community Hospital for Christmas to cheer everyone up. The magic will continue when Father Christmas arrives with his helpers with a free present for each child who goes to say hello. You can also take part in the Christmas Carol Anagram Quiz, where children and parents have to find out the name of a famous Christmas Carol that is hidden in the anagram displayed in the shop windows. Take your entry back to’ Just So’ and you could win a lovely cuddly toy. There will be lots of festive music and foods and also a chance to spot children’s characters in fancy dress as they hand out balloons and

sweets. Have a go at the Tombola or buy a cake from the cake stall. The great thing about all the activities is that any money raised during December by the Barnards Green Traders Association will then be donated to the Malvern Community Hospital. The Matron has asked us to raise funds towards an eye inspection trolley. It is the trader’s way of saying thank you to the local community that supports them throughout the year. Thanks also go to Malvern Town Council , Malvern Hills District Council and County Councillor Lucy Hodgson for their support of the Barnards Green Christmas event.

Parrys of Malvern Forty years in retail is quite an achievement and this will be the fortieth Christmas of trading for Parrys, on Church Street in the heart of Malvern. To mark the anniversary, Parrys has commissioned some jewellery of its own. ‘There’s a ruby and diamond pendant on a gold chain, with matching stud earrings’ says David Siviter. ‘Part of our success is because we have always valued offering a good service to customers’ continues David, ‘and I think its important that when making a significant purchase of jewellery, the customer gets exactly what they want.’
services including the re-making of jewellery. ‘Some customers have inherited a ring, which might look rather dated, but contains high quality stones. Recently I re-made a diamond ring for one customer, which she was delighted with. It means they can continue to enjoy a piece of jewellery that would otherwise be consigned to the back of a drawer.’
Parrys had already been trading for many years when the Siviter family took over the shop early in 1974. ‘We’ve worked hard to develop the quality of stock and to choose some excellent ranges of jewellery for the shop’ says David.
More and more customers are coming in for diamond jewellery, and once they find Parrys they become loyal customers. ‘I like to think we look after our customers and treat them well’ says David. As well as an extensive range of watches and jewellery, this year the shop will be stocking Hush, a range of modern, silver jewellery with a pink colour palette. ‘Its high quality and something we’re happy to stock, for this, our fortieth Christmas in business’ says David.

Recipe
spelt & mushroom moneybags Ingredients
An Our Lizzy Gift Voucher makes an ideal Christmas present! For details of local cookery classes and parties see www.ourlizzy.com or contact Lizzy on 01684 892 688
Makes 12 money bags Ready in 90 minutes including cooling time
• 1 small onion finely chopped • 2 cloves of garlic crushed • 100g chestnut mushrooms, sliced • 125g pearled spelt • 1 litre of vegetable stock • 175ml of local cider • 2 handfuls of spinach • salt and black pepper to taste • 6 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil
For this recipe you can use some nice local oil and cider. Serve as a main or a starter for a great Christmas dinner!
22
1. Make the vegetable stock and place on a low heat. 2. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large pan. Sauté the onion, garlic and mushrooms and cook until the mushrooms are browned. 3. Add the spelt and stir until coated in oil, then add the cider, cook for 5 minutes. Add a ladleful of stock and stir. Add the spinach. 4. Cook on a medium heat, stirring frequently, adding more stock as required. 5. When the spelt is cooked, remove the pan from the heat, and season with salt and pepper. Allow to cool for about 30 minutes.
To make the money bags Preheat the oven to 200°/Gas 6, grease a baking tray. Cut a packet of filo pastry into 15cm squares. Take two squares of pastry and brush with oil, place on top of each other brush with oil and place a spoonful of the mixture in the centre. Pull the edges of the filo up to the middle, twist to seal then place on baking tray. Repeat to make additional money bags until the mixture is used up. Bake for 20 minutes until golden.

Local Walk
A delightful walk in town Carl Flint has written three Pictorial Guide Books to our area. This short walk of 2 and a half miles takes us from the town centre, along Green Valley to St Ann’s Well. Start this delightful walk from the entrance to Malvern’s famous Priory. As the path bends to the left beneath the large Cedar of Lebanon, set back about five metres is Anne Darwin’s small headstone. She died at the tender age of 10 in April 1851. Some believe that Anne’s death was the final turning point in extinguishing any belief her father Charles Darwin had ‘in a moral and just universe’. Turn left up the steep Church Street towards Belle Vue Island and you will find the attractive public drinking spout called Malvhina, based upon Celtic standing stones, the Christian Holy Trinity and the three springs emanating from Happy Valley, Ivy Scar Rock and Rushey Valley. Elgar’s statue and the Enigma Fountain celebrate his musical influence on the town. Turning left is a steep climb along St Ann’s Road and then Happy Valley Road.
Walk 6
Tucked away on the edge of the hillside is a small brick construction, known as the Happy Valley Donkey Spring. Follow the left turn signposted St Ann’s Well, which brings us to a pretty grassy plateau known as St Ann’s Delight, with excellent views over Great Malvern. St Ann’s Well and café is visible below. Outside the Well Room is ‘Old Moses Spout’, the name given to the donkey that carried Princess Victoria up to the well in the mid-nineteenth century. The short downhill walk to Great Malvern is very steep and care must be taken when frosty. A footpath descends for some 97 steps (rather than the stated 99) to Rose Bank Gardens, developed by Dyson Perrins of Worcestershire Sauce fame in 1918. A walk downhill brings us through the attractive Priory Steps, underneath an ornate wrought iron archway topped by a Victorian gas lamp, and back to our starting place.
34
This is a short walk of just 2.5 miles taking just under the hour for those with limited time to enjoy in part the splendours of Great Malvern and St Ann’s Well. A walk uphill through the town centre leads us on to St Ann’s Road, Green Valley, St Ann’s Well and back into Great Malvern by the ’99 steps’ and Rose Bank Gardens. To download the full details of the walk, please visit our website allaboutmalvernhills.com and choose Walking on the Malvern Hills & in Malvern under the ‘Local Life’ tab.

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath
David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath
Your questions answered: After 22 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.
Topic of the month: Preventing Neck Pain As an Osteopath I spend many hours a week gently manipulating, mobilizing and softening up neck and shoulder muscles. However many people are in fact their own worst enemy as prevention is of course better than cure. Here are five things to be wary of: • Television and Computer set up So many people do not have their television directly in line with their chair or sofa. This leads to prolonged neck rotation with all manner of potential consequences for the muscles and joints. Similarly desk top computers are often set up with the screen off to one side. However laptops and tablet computers are hazardous in a different way as we tend to peer down at them and overstrain the muscles at the back of the neck. • The “back wash” at the hair dressers So many people put their neck through this weekly torture. This position is bad for any neck and especially so if you’re over 50 and /or have spondylosis. Once again the degree of hyperextension and the pressure of the porcelain compressing the articular column is asking for trouble. Although many hairdressers try to help with padding on the sink etc, I always recommend having the hair washed facing forward.
This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk
• Breast stroke swimming Although swimming scores highly in terms of the strength, stamina and flexibility benefits, breast stroke is not the stroke of choice. Even when done properly with the face dipped in the water the neck is significantly hyper- extended whilst breathing, leading to potential facet joint and nerve root irritation. Stick with front crawl and back stroke where possible. • Phone use We’ve all done it: held the phone between ear and shoulder so that we can use both hands to write something down. However many people do this routinely during their working day. It can lead to contracture of several shoulder muscles with possible pain and restricted movement. If you regularly have to write whilst on the phone invest in a head set or hands –free kit. • Car air conditioning Not such a problem in the winter but I’ve seen many patients in pain after a long car journey with the air con blowing onto an exposed neck. The muscles get chilled, causing them to contract and become painful. Always direct the airflow away from you to cool the car as a whole, not just your neck and shoulders.
Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

the winner of the Open Air All About... Photographic Exhibition The winner of Malvern’s first Outdoor Photographic Exhibition is this amazing photograph of a fox, taken by Carl Day.
40
A series of pictures were on display in the town centre through the summer and autumn, with the public encouraged to vote for their favourite via mobile phone.
very last moment I peered around the side of my lens at him, he spotted me, and trotted away. I think part of the photo’s success is the fact that it’s a natural shot and not a set-up.’
‘I am flattered’ says Carl ‘and quite surprised to win as I was up against some really good images. The photograph was almost an accident. I was in a farmer’s field trying to photograph a hen harrier which had been spotted nearby. The temperature at the time was minus 16 Celsius so as you can imagine, I couldn’t stay outdoors for very long. I had concealed myself using camouflage and I was lying on the ground just as the sun was rising. Suddenly the fox appeared. He was oblivious to my presence so I took a snap. He heard the click of the camera’s shutter, looked around and then carried on towards me! At the
Carl has been taking photography seriously for the past six years, after becoming hooked during a holiday to Pembrokeshire. Back at home in Malvern, he began putting many hours of work into his new hobby. ‘This is a good part of the world to be a photographer’ he says, ‘we have

many different habitats on and around the Hills and a good array of wildlife around us. The start or the end of the day is the best time to see wildlife, when there’s nobody else on the Hills, the wildlife comes out. You wouldn’t believe how much you can see!’ The exhibition, called ‘In and Around Malvern’ was organised by the Beacon Camera Club and Pulse Great Malvern which promotes events around the town centre. Anna Brook from Pulse Malvern helped to organise it. ‘The reaction to the exhibition has been fantastic. The Beacon Camera gained many new members as a result, and we received many kind comments from local traders as well as visitors to the town and local people. In fact the reaction was so positive, we are delighted that Malvern Hills District Council will allow us to keep the exhibition in place until early January. People are already asking if we can arrange another exhibition, so we are looking at the possibilities.’ Another photo exhibition called ‘Winter Wonderland’ will be taking place around the town centre throughout the festive season, see page 44 for more details.

All About...
Malvern Vale WI A new WI is opening at the Malvern Vale Community Centre, one of more than 6,600 across the country. Mary Lou Lockyer, one of the Worcestershire WI Advisers, is helping to set it up.
“Setting up this particular WI is quite special to me, as when I came to Malvern with my husband, his job was to decommission the old Ministry of Defence site on which Malvern Vale now stands. As an organisation we are always looking to start new WIs in towns and villages. We begin by advertising; spreading the word through the press, radio and social media, followed by an initial meeting to see how many people join us. There are nine WIs in and around Malvern. One of the newest is West Malvern WI whose numbers have quickly gone from 20 to around 80. We recently opened a new WI in Upton upon Severn, since a previous group had ceased meeting a few years previously. It is now full of young people who are making a great success of it. As well as enjoying getting involved in the many Upton festivals, their picture has been used on national advertising material, so they are really spreading the word about what we do. The WI is about many things. It is firstly about friendship. You meet many new and interesting people. We play a big part in our local communities and we aim to inspire women to do all sorts of different activities, whether its craft, cookery, writing or computer skills. Each WI is different and can be anything you want it to be. It reflects the interests of its members. Education is another aspect of what we offer. Local WIs organise regular speakers at their meetings and we also have Denman, our own residential College in Oxfordshire, a wonderful place that runs courses catering to every interest.
48
The WI campaigns nationally on issues that affect us all. This year our discussions will include the funding of women’s centres for vulnerable women, increasing organ donation and the campaign against female genital mutilation. We have excellent speakers who come and speak about these topics. We then vote on them through our national magazine, WI Life. Once we have enough interest to make Malvern Vale WI successful, we will hold further meetings to tell potential members more about the WI, and form a small group to run it. This is not nearly as time consuming as you might think but gives more opportunities to be part of a wonderful and supportive women’s organisation. Across Worcestershire we have 4,000 members with a total of 214,000 members across the country. We’ve already been approached by women keen to help start the new Malvern Vale WI and we hope it will inspire a new generation of women to join us. I spend quite a lot of my time promoting the WI to a wider audience and almost everybody who joins says ‘I wish I’d done this years ago’!”
The new Malvern Vale WI will meet monthly at the Malvern Vale Community Centre, Swinyard Road, WR14 1GU. For more information call Fiona on (01905) 641658 or email fiona@wfwi.org.uk

2013 in Pictures – We live in a beautiful part of the world, and on January 1st of this year, we decided to start recording that beauty with a photo for every day of 2013. Those photos can now be seen on our magazine’s website, allaboutmalvernhills.com. It has been a challenge! Perhaps the most important thing was to always have a camera at the ready when heading out and about. It’s amazing what you sometimes spot as you go about your daily life. From icicles and snowy scenes in January, through to blossom in Spring and a mini heatwave in July, many of the photos were taken on the spur of the moment, and reveal how the character of our area changes as the seasons progress. One of our favourite photos was taken on April 20th when a chance walk along St Ann’s Road was interrupted as we spotted the tower of the Priory bathed in evening sunshine. Another beautiful photo was added to the collection! Taking a photo every day also means having to head out onto the Hills even if the weather is less than perfect. Springtime this year saw many blustery, showery days when you would either roast in the sun or be soaked by the rain. The photograph on 18th April shows a distant Worcestershire Beacon in sunny weather, as a rain shower moves swiftly across the scene. Occasionally, the best photographs came by heading out at dawn or sunset, or even at night. Autumn sunrises (September 5th, 22nd and 25th) gave us amazing pictures of silhouetted hills, flanked by mist and cloud. The photograph on the 5th November shows low cloud hanging over the town at dawn, creating a hazy, orange glow from sodium street lamps. Taking this photo meant a trudge up the Hills at around 6am, a damp, early start at a time when many people are still sleeping! The pictures gained a healthy following on our Facebook page, with some of the photos proving very popular. One of the most ‘liked’ pictures is of the Buzzards Sculpture, floodlit at night, and photographed quite by chance; we just happened to be passing with a camera handy. The resulting photo collection from Malvern Hills Today has made us realise how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful part of the world!

Well-Being
on being the
eternal student By Satya Robyn from Malvern “Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s selfesteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily.” ~ Thomas Szasz I’ve always been terrible at history. Last week, as part of a Buddhist study programme, I had to write an essay about what was happening around the world in 500 C.E. I didn’t even know what C. E. meant. I didn’t know where to start. I felt very stupid. I struggled for hours, getting more and more frustrated. And then something happened. I started to be interested in what I was reading. I realised that the facts I was finding out were about real human beings, living their lives so long ago. A small spark of interest in history was born! Learning isn’t always this painful. But, as Szasz’s quote points out, learning often includes letting go of something we thought we knew. Most of us like to know who we are, where we are and what
we’re doing. Acknowledging that we don’t know can take a little bit of courage. This courage is necessary if we’re going to continue learning. And being open to learning brings us many treasures. We don’t just find out new information which will help us make better decisions and live more skilfully. We remind ourselves of how little we really know about other people and other things, and we become less judgemental. We get to know others and the world more intimately, and we feel closer to them and to it. We experience wonder, and awe… Here are a few tips to help you reawaken your hunger for learning.
One: Prioritise learning If you’re busy, it might help to consciously make space for learning. Do some reading for twenty minutes every lunch time, or book a class at your local college. Spend an hour every Wednesday working at your online writing class. Meet with a friend every month and talk through how you’re getting on with your work–life balance. Put time for learning in your diary, and honour it.
Two: Follow your curiosity Curiosity is the foundation of all learning. You can practice curiosity at any time; waiting in the queue at the bus stop, watching a documentary or listening to your own thoughts. You can be curious about facts and figures, or about how people (including yourself) tick. Ask yourself questions like ‘why are things the way they are?’, ‘what’s underneath?’ or ‘how does this fit with what I already know?’. Indulge your curiosity; use Google, ask people questions or go to the library.

Three: Be interested when your feelings are stirred up If you’d like to learn more about yourself, pay attention to whenever you feel angry, frustrated, resentful, betrayed etc. These feelings usually reveal something about ourselves as well as about the other person. If we can think about our own part in what’s happened, we’ll often discover a wounded part of ourselves and we can take responsibility for this. We can then take steps to look after ourselves better next time, e.g. by setting better boundaries for ourselves or by being more honest about what we need.
Four: Enjoy yourself! Although it can sometimes make us vulnerable, learning can also be a lot of fun. It gives us a chance to try out new things, find things out about ourselves and the world, and to play. Sign up for a flamenco class, borrow some books about pop art, or go on a walk with a book for identifying wild flowers. Take notice of what the world has to offer you. Enjoy!

2014: Learn to speak in public with Malvern Speakers Steve Birch is President of the Club. ‘Malvern Speakers is a friendly club, where you’ll make new friends while developing your speaking and leadership skills. Members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive and friendly environment where we’re all in it together! There is a nice party atmosphere at each meeting, which gives the opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches and offering constructive evaluation. We follow a standard agenda at each meeting with short prepared speeches by members, as well as Table Topics, a fun activity where we throw out a topic and volunteers will then speak to the group for one or two minutes with no preparation. If the idea of that is too much, you can give feedback to other speakers instead. There are formal certifications to aim for if you wish and you can also work towards further awards and enter speech competitions. Many different qualities make up a good speaker, not only in the way their words engage an audience, but also their body movement and expressions. We learn about speech organization, vocal variety, language, gestures and persuasion. Every prepared speaker is assigned an evaluator who identifies speech strengths and offers positive suggestions for improvement. Becoming a member of Malvern Speakers gives you a lot of self-confidence, whether you want to come along and develop a speech for a wedding or a funeral eulogy, you’re a member of

2014: Get fit with Fiesta Fit Club Anna Downs says ‘Fiesta Fit Club delivers exercises classes specifically designed for women in and around the Malvern area. My idea is to provide an environment where women can achieve their health and fitness goals outside of a gym environment. It was born from my own experience of wanting to find a female-centric fitness class after having my children. I desperately needed to find a supportive environment and a knowledgeable instructor but could not afford or justify hiring a personal trainer. Having previously experienced my fair share of body issues I understand how to devise classes that specifically tackle issues faced by women wanting to improve the way they feel about their bodies. When women attend a class, they will receive a very detailed health questionnaire. I will also do a non-invasive check of their tummy muscles and ask about pelvic floor function as this helps to build a picture of which exercises will benefit them and those best avoided. I have had some fabulous results from women who have wanted to address their tummy muscle separation and stress incontinence. All of my prescribed exercises and choreography are put together with

2014: Learn Yoga with Jo Harper B.Ed, BWY Dip I have been practising Yoga all my adult life and began teaching ten years ago after completing my British Wheel of Yoga Diploma. I continue to study with different teachers to keep my classes fresh and varied. As well as general Yoga classes, I teach Yoga for pregnancy and specialist back care classes. Men and women of all ages and fitness levels attend my classes. My students enjoy the physical and mental benefits that regular Yoga practice brings, including greater ease and range of movement in spine and joints; stronger, lengthened muscles; improved posture and breathing; a more positive outlook on life; the ability to let go of stress and to relax. I aim to make my classes accessible to all, providing a progressive approach to the exercises, postures and breathing techniques which I teach. I place great importance on safety and talk to students individually to assess their needs. I aim to make my classes welcoming and fun, but also informative so that students understand what they are doing and why.

2014: Mindfulness with Kaspa Thompson Mindfulness practice is about learning to control your awareness and attention. The meditations practiced in mindfulness traditions increase focus and train us to observe without preconceptions and to be curious without being judgemental. We begin by working with the breath, which is available anytime, anywhere. Take a moment now to notice how you are breathing, feel the air entering and leaving your body. You will probably notice how easily your attention strays elsewhere. We all have odd thoughts come and distract us, worries about the future, or more mundane thoughts about what to have for lunch. Practicing a breathing mediation helps train the mind to remain focused on one thing, rather than being caught up in the usual maelstrom of thoughts. When practicing breathing meditation we immediately get some sense of relief as we stop adding energy to these wayward thoughts. For a moment or two, the worries quiet down. When we practice in this way regularly our capacity to remain calm grows. This kind of attention is a transferable skill; the focus we learn can be applied to other areas in our life. For example, we become more able to focus clearly on practical tasks we are doing. We can also apply this awareness to our innerlives. As we begin to notice what thoughts occupy us most, and where they come from, we get to know the character of our own minds. We begin to see how these thoughts and feelings swimming through our minds affect the choices

we make in life, and as we see this more clearly are able to make better choices. Practise mindfulness in your daily life Stop what you are doing and take three breaths, whilst paying attention to the breath. Make time for this once a day for the next few days. What happens when you put your attention on your breathing? What quality of attention do you have? If you feel drawn towards practising more, think about establishing a regular longer practice. For example, sit down and pay attention to your breathing for five minutes once a day for a week.
