When I write this there’s just the first hint that the evenings might be getting longer, at least when I stood in my garden recently, it was still light at 5.00pm. I must admit to finding winter a hard season to bear, since I work during the week, I rarely get outside in the daylight, and I miss my gardening, something I love to do. Although Spring might still seem a long way off, by the time the next magazine is published, we’ll be well on the way! Don’t forget to keep this magazine handy until the end of March, and in the meantime please browse through the pages where you’ll find all sorts of tips, information and a wealth of local products and services, all provided by local people. Enjoy!

Happy New Year? By Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall At this time of year I like to reflect on the twelve months that have just passed and try to anticipate the year ahead. Never in my memory has the financial landscape looked so uncertain, and uncertainty is bad for markets, bad for business, and most importantly bad for households. For me, the fate of the world economy and the prospects for financial markets in 2012 and 2013 depend primarily on the answers to three big questions: Will the Euro zone crisis be resolved in a timely and effective manner? The outcome of the Euro zone debt crisis remains very unclear, even after the Brussels summit of December, implying that the crisis is likely to continue and possibly even rise to another crescendo later this year. Will the US economy maintain its recent better performance? The United States’ improvement in performance has been only partial, limited to certain sectors of the economy , and while some of these improvements should be sustained, the overall economy is likely to be held back by many of the same headwinds that eroded performance last year. Will the Chinese economy avoid a hard landing in 2012? The Chinese economy remains excessively dependent on external demand and hence acutely vulnerable to the deepening downturn in Europe. So even though domestic monetary and fiscal stimulus will almost certainly be employed in 2012, China’s overall growth rate seems likely to be lower than in 2010 or early 2011. The Outlook In the developed world the normal recovery process after a recession has not materialised since the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The reason, of course, is the over-indebted or impaired state of balance sheets, particularly in the household and financial sectors. This means that large parts of developed economies must focus on debt repayment by restraining consumption and postponing new investment, leading to sub-par economic growth. In response, governments initially stepped up their

fiscal support programmes, but since debt levels were already high, the additional burden of official sector debt has now triggered a sovereign debt crisis across much of Europe and threatens to do so even in the US and the UK if deficit spending is not curtailed. This implies that 2012 will be another year of balance sheet repair by the private sector, austerity by governments, and slow growth in most of the advanced economies. One bright spot, however, is that inflation rates should generally decline. In the emerging world there was initially a strong bounce back of economic activity but this is now faltering due to the failure to de-couple from the developed economies. The continued heavy dependence of growth in these economies on exports to the developed world means that in most cases domestic demand growth will not be vigorous enough to offset external weakness. As in the developed economies, headline inflation rates, which are already slowing across much of the emerging world, will fall further in 2012. What this all means to you Whilst the outlook remains uncertain, markets remain extremely volatile, and the household purse is continually squeezed, there are measures you can take to be best placed to ride the waves of the economic storm or indeed take advantage of the investment opportunities. If you have not been contacted in the last 12 months by your financial adviser, with a view to re-assessing the suitability of your portfolio, rebalance of your holding, or reaffirmation of your attitude to risk, dare I suggest you have the wrong adviser? What is important is constant reassessment and reviews of your spread of investments, whether it is a small ISA or a substantial pension, ensuring the continued suitability coupled with correct management of your investments.

Michael Noakes;

How do you squeeze the life story of Michael Noakes into a couple of pages? He’s the sort of man who really should sit down and write his memoirs. Unfortunately, as one of Britain’s leading portrait painters, the work is still piling up at seventy eight years old. He’s also been dealing with the loss of his wife, the eminent literary scholar Vivien Noakes, who died last year. ‘People in Malvern really have been charming to me and have been very kind and supportive since my loss’ he tells me, when we meet at his house. In his studio a large, east-facing window frames a view of the Cotswolds in the distance. Around us the paintings hang like a who’s who of the 20th Century. Two former Archbishops of Canterbury gaze down on the Queen Mother, while Alec Guinness reclines on a wooden chair. In the corner, a jovial young man holding a pipe leans back on the corner of the frame;

12

a self-portrait of Michael in 1968. After studying for eight years at Art Schools, Michael was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and then the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Some of his most famous sittings soon followed. ‘I’ve painted most of the Royal Family at least once’ he says. Princess Anne must like him, she’s been painted six times. The Queen, too, has been a repeat subject. ‘I’ve spent a total of twenty or more hours in sittings alone with the Queen, which must be very unusual’ Michael says. In the political world, perhaps one of his most famous portraits was of the former American President Bill Clinton. ‘Painting President Clinton proved a little tricky, as he was on the go with advisers constantly rushing in and out of the Oval Office. He wasn’t going to stop for me!’ he says. He painted Margaret Thatcher when in office as Prime Minister, afterwards she visited Michael at his home in London to be painted for another picture. This completed portrait, showing her on the step outside Number Ten Downing Street, stands over twelve feet in height. ‘I suggested a large portrait to her, and she simply said ‘Let’s do that’’. When it comes to representing heights and proportion, Michael is meticulous. Before completing the portrait, he plotted the exact dimensions of Downing Street with the help of one of his sons, using a tape measure. ‘We got one or two funny looks as well as help from the policemen on duty!’ he says. Lady Thatcher became a friend of Michael and his wife. ‘To my mind she’s a kinder, more thoughtful person than the public image might suggest, and I wanted to reflect that’. Michael’s obsession for accuracy got him into

an Artist’s story trouble on another occasion, when he was keen to measure the height of the Queen, with her eye and shoulder levels, for comparison with other figures in a group picture. When Michael asked whether it might be possible, the Queen’s Private Secretary simply said ‘What, measure the Queen? I’ll ask’ and left the matter at that. On the day of the first sitting, Michael asked ‘has your Secretary explained about measuring you, ma’am?’ to which the Queen replied, simply, ‘No’. ‘Well, I became pinker and pinker!’ says Michael, ‘as I explained what I wanted to do. At the end of my mumbled explanation the Queen said ‘Yes, that’s all right’ and so I started measuring. I was in such a state I nearly managed to cover the sleeve of her dress in black felt-tip pen!’ The finished portrait was a success, and a study for it hangs today in Clarence House, the official residence of the Prince of Wales. Perhaps Michael’s most ambitious project was to document a year in the life of The Queen, following her on tours abroad as well as her visits to events in Britain. His wife Vivien planned the book and words while Michael completed a wealth of sketches and paintings, documenting royal life with an unprecedented level of access. The finished book is something he is still clearly proud of. Portrait painting doesn’t always come easily though. ‘I can try as hard as I like, but on some days I have to stop, and re-start my work’. One portrait took sixteen attempts before Michael was content with the result. It’s a mark of the artist’s striving for perfection. Even now, his work can attract people like Pope Benedict XVI, whom he was commissioned to paint for the Vatican. Michael’s achievements, with Vivien’s, were recently

honoured by the placing of a blue plaque on their old home in St John’s Wood in London. It was unveiled by their old friend David Attenborough. Although much of Michael’s work still takes him to London, he enjoys life here in Malvern. ‘This is a marvellous town to live in, life here is much easier than London’. Despite a dazzling list of former clients, Michael is keen to stress that he’s not simply a painter of ‘celebrity’; his commissions are of people from all walks of life. Nonetheless, its hard not to be wowed by the rows of famous faces captured in his portraits. One in particular catches the eye; the actress Margaret Rutherford, in old age, sitting in a chair and gazing out of the picture with a benign smile lighting up her face. ‘A lovely woman’ muses Michael, ‘I remember going to her house in Chalfont St Peter (Buckinghamshire) to paint her. As I looked around the room I saw her Oscar on the mantelpiece. Wanting to encourage her to talk, I said ‘When did you win that?’ ‘ Oh, I don’t know, dear’ she replied. ‘Last Thursday, I think!’

Forming New Good Habits By Fiona Robyn from Malvern The traditional moment for making New Year’s Resolutions has come and gone. Did you make any? Did you keep them? Have you been meaning to change your diet, or develop a daily yoga practice, or learn Japanese? The spiritual teacher Georges Gurdjieff said that ‘Every grown-up man consists wholly of habits, although he is often unaware of it and even denies having any habits at all’. Our every-day habits, from brushing our teeth to the way we deal with our anger, can determine our health, our wealth and our happiness. Unfortunately, most of us find it extremely difficult to change these ingrained patterns of behaviour. We begin with the best of intentions, and slip rapidly back into the familiarity of what we know. It might be difficult, but it is possible to change. If you’d like to replace some of your bad habits with more virtuous ones, then here are my tips to give you a better chance of success. 1. Choose your new habit carefully. Why do you want to make a change? What is motivating you? Write these reasons down so you can refer to them if you’re tempted to give up. 2. Be realistic. Start small. It’s better to meditate for five minutes a day than for half an hour once a week. You can always increase your commitment when your new habit is established. 3. Make a plan. Decide exactly what you’re going to do differently. Keep it simple. Decide how long you’ll try out this new habit for and identify the ‘danger

16

areas’, when you might fall off the wagon. 4. Make a commitment. Once you’re happy with your plan, decide to make a formal commitment to it. Write it down and put it up on the fridge. Tell your friends and family. 5. Seek support. Let your friends and family know what you’re doing. Ask an encouraging friend if you can arrange a ‘check in’ every week or month when you can discuss your progress. 6. Deal with set-backs. Before you even start, expect to have bad days when you don’t manage to carry out your new habit. When this happens, try to let it go as soon as you can. 7. Experiment. You need to find something that works well for you rather than doing it the way other people think you should. This might mean changing your original plan. 8. Reward yourself for your successes. Plan to give yourself a reward (a meal out or a sum of money) if you make it to thirty days. Try to be patient with yourself when things go wrong. We can see developing new good habits as improving the soil in our garden. Sometimes it takes many years of hard work (digging, adding compost) before we really start reaping the rewards. It might seem like nothing ever blooms, but then one year your roses look more beautiful than they’ve ever looked before, and you get a bumper crop of juicy strawberries. I hope you can appreciate the journey towards your new habits. If we’re in the right frame of mind, even the hard physical labour of digging the garden can be satisfying. Try to find new good habits that you can learn to enjoy. As Doug Henning says, “The hard must become habit. The habit must become easy. The easy must become beautiful.”

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

Topic of the month: The Rotator Cuff Injury the commonest shoulder problem A couple of years ago I injured my own shoulder whilst trimming hedges in my garden. Although it is always difficult to diagnose one’s own ailments it did gradually become obvious that I had a rotator cuff injury.

What is the rotator cuff?

How to injure the rotator cuff!

The shoulder is a tremendously flexible joint. Like the hip, the shoulder is a ball and socket arrangement. However, unlike the hip, the socket is very shallow and the joint is termed an “incomplete” ball and socket. This allows an enormous range of movement but the down side is that the joint is intrinsically unstable and relies on just four small muscles to hold it together. These muscles are together known as the rotator cuff.

How is it injured?

All too easily is the simple answer. Tears of the cuff muscles are common especially as one gets older. This is partly because the different shoulder muscles weaken at different rates. The resulting muscle imbalance leads to tightening of the joint. This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

Additionally one of the cuff muscles called the Supraspinatus passes through a tunnel of bone which becomes narrower with age due to degenerative change. Together these changes reduce one’s ability to perform overhead work.

How is it treated?

Complete tears of the cuff muscles may require surgical repair. However the majority of cases are less severe and can be improved with more conservative measures. Steroid injections can be given, but too many of these will create other problems. In my clinics I use a selection of soft tissue techniques to stimulate healing and some medical acupuncture techniques to work on the more inaccessible muscles. Very specific exercises are also important in achieving a satisfactory result. But remember prevention is better than cure. Always be cautious about undertaking prolonged overhead work. It’s often cheaper to pay someone else to do it! Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £40. Follow-up sessions £35. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

All About... ...Lifestock and Dogs A series of training courses to teach dogs how to behave around livestock are being run in West Malvern. Here, Jennifer Grantham from the Malvern Hills Conservators gives some tips to help dog walkers keep livestock safe when out for a walk on the hills.

What should I do if my dog

D

A dog’s natural instinct is to chase and when in this frame of mind it becomes very difficult to get a dog to obey commands. Sadly, sheep have been injured and killed by dogs over the last few years on the Northern Hills leaving orphaned lambs and unnecessary distress. If your dog does chase after a sheep please let us know as soon as possible so that the sheep can be treated by a vet immediately. Unreported incidents are now being reported to the police as sheep chasing is an offence under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1952.

You do not need to keep your dog on a lead but you do need to keep it under control at all times. A dog’s natural instinct is to chase so if in doubt keep your dog on a lead. As well as the protection of livestock act, the conservators’ own Byelaw 31 states that no person shall cause or allow a dog to chase, hurt or worry any cattle, sheep or any other animal present on the Hills.

Young & Co Don’t be a target for the Taxman

You may recently have noticed two types of news stories involving the Taxman. The first is the allegation that some multinationals may be getting away without paying vast sums of tax. The second set of stories involves small taxpayers who are being chased for every last penny of tax and even, some suggest, deliberately targeted by the Revenue for penalties. Not so well publicised is the fact that the Revenue have been given £900 million of extra funding in return for a target of collecting £7 billion from tax avoidance each year by 2014/15. Revenue jobs depend on collecting this extra tax and the danger is that in this dash for cash, smaller taxpayers are seen as an easier target and will be hit hardest. Nick Rawlings, manager at Malvern Chartered Accountants, Young & Co, says that taxpayers and businesses need to be on top form when it comes to dealing with the Taxman. “There are plenty of easy ways to avoid becoming a target”, Nick says. “Make sure first and foremost that you make your returns and pay the tax you owe on time, whether this is PAYE, VAT, Corporation Tax or Income Tax. By being late, as well as costing you penalties and interest, you are also making an investigation by the Taxman more likely”. Nick also warns against burying your head in the sand. “If you are struggling to pay tax, don’t ignore it. Make sure you file returns on time and contact the Revenue as soon as possible to ask for time to pay. This will usually avoid penalties and will help to keep you in their good books”. Other areas to watch out for are: • New businesses need to register with the Revenue straightaway to avoid penalties; • For businesses near the VAT registration threshold, make sure you apply for VAT if you have to. The Revenue have teams actively seeking businesses that should be registered; • Make sure you keep proper records. If you don’t, as well as charging a penalty of up to £3,000, the Revenue may make their own estimate of your income. Nick’s final advice is “Using the experience of qualified accountants like Young & Co is definitely the best way to keep the Taxman at bay and avoid unwanted penalties or investigations”.

Malvern Hills Probus Club

Fact File

Community Focus

Outing to Birmingham Botanical Gardens The name Probus derives from an acronym for Pro(fessional) and Bus(iness) and has existed since the early 1920’s in Saskatchewan, Canada and New Haven, Connecticut, USA. This early usage of the name didn’t restrict the group to business and professional men and had different objectives from our present mainstream of Probus clubs worldwide. The name was then used in England by Rotary Clubs setting up Probus Clubs, originally, for active retired professional and business men in the mid 1960’s. Indeed Malvern Hills Probus Club came about through the auspices of the Rotary Club of Malvern, being the second Probus Club in the town, the first being The Probus Club of Malvern, which still meets at the Abbey Hotel. Malvern Link Probus Club meets at United Reformed Church Hall, Malvern Link. Membership now reaches a much wider audience and men who are retired of any age are welcome to join. The inaugural meeting of Malvern Hills Probus Club was held at the Foley Arms Hotel on 28th January 1975, where it met for many years. Our present venue is St Andrew’s Church Hall, Poolbrook. The aim of Probus Clubs is for like-minded retired men to meet together in fellowship, share experiences but also to enjoy and learn from the many talks and activities which are arranged throughout the year. Since those early days, Probus Clubs have extended to New Zealand in 1974, Australia in 1976 and Canada in 1987. There are now Probus Clubs existing in all parts of the world on every continent. Interestingly, there is no overriding organisation or constitution, each Club does its ‘own thing’ so to

Organisation: Malvern Hills Probus Club Established: 1975 Contact: Keith Salkeld Role: Secretary Contact Details: 01684 567916, keith@salkeld1941.freeserve.co.uk More Information: Meet at St Andrews Church Hall, Poolbrook, Malvern, meeting every 2nd & 4th Tuesday in the month from 10am to 12 noon speak, with its own organisation and rules, which are relatively un-restrictive and exist simply to allow the Club to function. Consequently there are a variety of Clubs in the UK, with a number of Ladies Probus Clubs, including two in Malvern and even, I understand, one or two mixed Clubs. In addition to our regular meetings, Malvern Hills Probus has two pub lunches and two outings each year, to which ladies are invited. Speakers in the last year included Stella Hewett and her brilliant canine partner Labrador, Jenson, who does amazing tasks to help overcome her disability. Last May, Dr Chris Flower gave a superb presentation on the Klondyke Gold Rush. Our outings last year were to Hampton Court, near Leominster with lunch in their restaurant and to Worcester Porcelain Museum, again with a talk and lunch provided. In previous years we have visited venues as diverse as Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the SS Great Britain at Bristol Docks. Many of our outings are by coach and a meal together is usually part of the occasion. We currently have thirty-three members and could comfortably recruit some more. Guests or visitors may come free for three meetings before signing up as a member. Our subscription is £32.00 per annum which covers all our regular meetings. Lunches and outings are paid for by those members attending. For more information, write, telephone or email me (see Fact File box). Our programme for February & March is as follows: all meetings begin at 10am Tue14 Feb – John Harley. Escape to Colditz, part 1 Tue 28 Feb – John Harley. Escape to Colditz, part 2 Tues 13 March – Pub Lunch, members & guests only Tue 27 March – Richard Tomkinson, Rose Bank Vineyard from Scratch

Spring Cleaning Tips for the Home With the first flush of spring just around the corner, Anne Matthew at Housekeepers of Malvern shares with us some suggestions for clearing out the cobwebs and throwing open the windows to spring clean the home ahead of the warmer weather and lighter evenings. With many of us enjoying the benefits of an open fire or wood burner over the cold winter months, soot and dust soon settles throughout the home. Starting with a damp cloth and warm soapy water, gently wipe down your skirting boards, sills, picture and dado rails and door panels, removing dust and cobwebs as you go. Windows too will benefit from a good clean, particularly where condensation and mildew have settled. I find warm water with a drop of washing up liquid and a microfibre cloth are just as effective as branded products for getting the windows gleaming. Just remember not to clean windows when the sun is out; the water will evaporate quicker than you can clean and you’ll be left with streaky windows. Whilst you’re working on the windows, sills and frames, it’s worth turning your attention to curtains

and blinds which will appreciate a light vacuum using a clean upholstery attachment. Gently lift dust from the fabric by setting the vacuum on the lowest suction. Spiders notoriously lurk between curtain poles and window frames, as do other pests including ladybirds, so always check first. Horizontal aluminium and PVC blinds can be gently cleaned in a shallow bath, being careful to line the bath with a towel first so as not to scratch the base of the bath. Again, a drop of washing up liquid will breathe new life into your blinds. A word of caution; do not allow the blind mechanism to become wet. Two pairs of hands are definitely better than one when cleaning blinds! You’ll notice a significant difference just from tackling the above areas alongside your standard weekly cleaning. Other areas of the house will be discussed in our next article. In the meanwhile, start saving any old toothbrushes or small paintbrushes and we’ll address their many uses next time. Sue Akehurst, Zero Balancing Practitioner, Beacon Clinic, Portland Rd, Malvern WR 14 2TA What is Zero Balancing? It’s a deeply relaxing, non-invasive, hands-on therapy, carried out with the recipient fully clothed. The touch is pleasurable, clear and supportive in ways which can lead to profound healing, as a renewed bodily-felt integration is experienced. Zero Balancing allows your body to find its own way home. How does it work? It focuses on a particular group of joints that are involved with the smooth transmission of forces through the weight-bearing skeleton, which in effect act as shock absorbers. It can improve posture by providing a point of stillness around which your body can relax, giving you the opportunity to let go of unease and pain. It’s beneficial for a wide range of people and has extensive application in health care and personal development, stress reduction and pain relief as well as improving flexibility and posture.
