The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Malvern Wells, Welland
& Madresfield areas and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

History
barnards green history
Just over two years ago, Barnards Green History Group started researching the development of Barnards Green shopping area. The group recently produced a book with their findings but are still looking for more information. Barbara Hartley-Woolley takes up the story. We were given twelve panoramic photos of the shops taken in the 1970s. Thinking it would be fun to find out more, we spent two years on research and uncovered some fascinating stories about the area we live in. Using research tools including old newspaper cuttings, maps, directories, photos and planning applications we slowly added to our knowledge of how Barnards Green shops developed. Building on that, last summer was spent chatting with groups of people, all of whom had recollections about their times living or working in the shop area. The development of the area began when the farmer of Pigeon House Farm, which stood on the site of today’s car park at the junction with Geraldine Road, sold land for development. By the 1870s the farm land was slowly being bought for shops and housing to be built on.
DO YOU KNOW THESE BUILDINGS? Image above– Have you any photos of the farm buildings which stood in the area where Merrievale Court now stands? Humphris Riding School and George Hinds used the old farm buildings Image below – Rose Cottage was originally a half-timbered cottage with an orchard to one side. Two families living there were connected to notorious murders. It was renamed The Chestnuts and demolished in 1968 to make way for flats.
Last summer, after designing over 40 history posters for each of the current shops, we were persuaded to put our findings into a book. This was completed towards the end of last year and is available from several Barnards Green shops. Copies have been sent all over the UK and even abroad! There is still work to do – in particular we really want to hear from people with photographs and postcards that we might not have seen yet.
If you have any memories of these buildings, or other stories and photos of old Barnards Green, please get in touch with the history group by emailing bghistorygroup@gmail.com or by letter via the Just So Gift Shop in Barnards Green.

Charity
kenya concert This February, Great Malvern Priory hosts an evening of choral music, raising money for a charity that provides palliative care in Kenya. The Malaika Voices will be singing a range of popular music from the choral repertoire. One of the concert’s organisers is Gwyn Sloan, who has a special connection to Kenya.
We chose the name of the choir because Malaika means ‘angel’ in Swahili. My husband Iain, who was Director of Music at Malvern College and who conducted Malvern Festival Chorus founded this choir under the name of the Hospice Care Kenya Singers many years ago. It’s filled with very talented singers. Between 60 and 80 of us come together to perform, rehearsing in the afternoon before the performance in the evening. For this concert, we’ll be performing music by Handel, Mozart, Parry and others, which will be familiar to many people. It should be a very enjoyable evening in the beautiful setting of Great Malvern Priory. The concert is dedicated to the memory of Susan Cosker, a dear friend who, like me, was a palliative care nurse. We both travelled to Kenya on two occasions to work for the charity. Susan died last year and was a passionate supporter of the charity’s work. I was born in East Africa and grew up in Kenya, so supporting the work of Hospice Care Kenya means a lot to me. My husband and I have supported their work for around 20 years. We’ve never totted up a total amount but we must have raised more than £40,000 in that time. Every penny raised goes to helping people in Kenya. Even providing simple painkillers makes a difference to somebody who might not otherwise have access to pain relief. This concert has been sponsored by Shane Howells Ltd and Aspect Design to whom we are extremely grateful.

ABOUT HOSPICE CARE KENYA Hospice Care Kenya is a UK-registered charity helping people suffering the effects of cancer, HIV and other incurable conditions. In a country where access to healthcare can be a struggle, the work of this charity is a vital service to the many people it helps. The charity was founded in 1991 to support the newly opened Nairobi Hospice, which was the first palliative care hospice in Kenya. Today there are 70 hospices across the country, but many gaps in care remain. The charity supports the training of staff, helps to provide palliative care in the community as well as providing drugs and medical supplies. Orchard Lodge Clinic Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern
David Jones Heather Else Stuart Wilson Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us
Trouble straightening up? Better check the Psoas Muscle weaker or tighter) leading to back and pelvic pain as well as difficulty straightening up. This is sometimes referred to as “Psoas Syndrome”. The psoas muscle can also be subject to specific problems of its own such as tendonitis, bursitis and even psoas abscess. It can also become troublesome as a consequence of underlying illnesses such as gastro-intestinal, urinary or gynaecological problems. For this reason careful diagnosis is important.
The psoas (pronounced so-as) muscle is one of those hidden muscles in the body which people are blissfully unaware of until something goes wrong with it.
Where is it and what does it do? The psoas and its companion muscle the iliacus are flexors of the hip joint. The psoas runs between the outer part of the lumbar spine at the top to the upper/inner part of the femur (hip bone) at the bottom. Together these muscles act to bring the knees up towards the torso. However in day to day use they contribute significantly to core stability which keeps us in a posturally correct position.
What goes wrong with it?
In many injuries to the lumbar spine the psoas muscle will go into spasm. This is usually what is occurring when patients come into the clinic doubled up after pulling their low back. Sometimes it’s the opposite way round: the function of the psoas can become disturbed (e.g.
Treatment
Not all of the psoas muscle is accessible for direct hands-on treatment, as the majority of the muscle lies at the back of the abdomen behind the internal organs. The upper part of the muscle can be reached by working through the deep muscles at the side of the low back and the lower part can be accessed via the lower abdomen. Very specific exercises can also be applied to strengthen and/or lengthen the muscle. It is also important to check for any other mechanical joint problems that might be affecting the muscle.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

TUNED SPORTS MASSAGE Perhaps you’re a keen cyclist or runner, or maybe you work out at the gym, but your working hours are spent in the car or crouched over a laptop. The result can be tired, tight and bunched up muscles, which is a problem that Keith Evans knows all about. A keen cyclist and runner, he turned to sports massage which helped him overcome injury and improve his training for big events. ‘A few years ago I was working for British Cycling, working long hours, and decided it was time to retrain as a Sports Masseur.’

Business News AUSTIN & CO 2018 marks a year of big changes for Austin & Co of Malvern. The shop’s owner Sean Austin tells us more. After seven successful years on Belle Vue Terrace, our shop moves to new premises on Church Street in Malvern from February. Apart from the new shop, we have unveiled a whole new look to our branding and logo. Some things won’t be changing. We will continue to source some of the best greeting card designs from around the world, concentrating more on homegrown talent, with cards that are not only designed by British artists but also made in the UK. We have always seen our cards as affordable pieces of art that are not only sent but can become items that are kept and appreciated. Stationery is and will always be a feature of Austin & Co. We’re excited to bring unique brands to Malvern, including a new range of fountain pens and notebooks. For the past four years, we have been recognised as the UK’s most dog friendly shop by the Kennel Club. This is definitely something that will not change. Dogs and their owners will always be welcome at Austin & Co and Nessa will be there to greet her 4-legged pals to the shop. We will be increasing our offer to dogs and their owners, adding to our range of dog bowls, leads, collars, and treats. Above all, our dedication to customer service, our love for Malvern, providing value for money, and our commitment to shop locally will not be changing. We look forward to welcoming you to the new shop on Church Street. You can follow our progress on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/austinandco

CONQUEST ART Conquest Art is a Charity which inspires people with disabilities and long-term health issues to discover their creative energy and build self-confidence through art. Meeting regularly in Malvern Link, members enjoy creative activities in a friendly and caring environment. Tina McJarrow tells us more. Art can be invaluable in helping people to regain confidence in their abilities and to find happiness through self-expression. People with disabilities and older people often find themselves isolated because of their lack of mobility or ill health. Conquest Art groups provide a social activity with a purpose as well as an opportunity for members to express their feelings and gain a sense of achievement. We work with anybody over 16 living with disability or long-term illness. Our members have a wide range of disabilities such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Depression, Stroke, Arthritis and Visual Impairment. From our range of resources, members can choose techniques
which suit their own style and level of ability allowing them to work at their own pace. 2018 is the year of our 40th Anniversary and we will be celebrating our member’s achievements throughout the years as well as thanking our most valuable volunteers for their dedication. New members as well as volunteers are always welcome. Come along and enjoy the benefits that art can bring, make new friends and have fun. Our Malvern group meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday from 2.15pm to 4.15pm at the Malvern Link United Reformed Church, Church Hall (rear entrance) on Worcester Road, WR14 1SS. For further information on becoming a member or volunteer please phone Janet on (01684) 562188 or email enquiries@conquestart.org or see our website www.conquestart.org

Well Being
great gratitude A few days ago my thoughts were wandering all over the place. I was remembering things to do, making lists and composing emails. I was in the middle of walking meditation, where the aim is to remain grounded in the present moment, and instead my mind was jumping wildly from one thought to another. In walking meditation I sometimes use the sense of touch to bring me back into the present moment. Becoming aware of my feet on the floor grounds me again. On that day of busy thoughts it wasn’t the physical sensation that lifted me out of my freneticism but a sudden awareness of everything I had received. The carpet my feet were padding into was donated. The floorboards beneath are two hundred years old, like the building. The hands that created the building are long gone but I am still reaping the benefit of their work. The sun was shining through the tall Georgian windows; I had nothing to do with creating the sun, and yet there it was sustaining me, and the whole world. Two words came to mind, “just this”. Everything I needed was already there. Everything I needed to be at peace was already there. When our minds are busy, or we feel disturbed, upset or anxious, we are often focussing on the one thing that has worked its way under our skin, and have forgotten about everything that we already have. Or we are comparing our lives to someone else’s (they always look happy on Facebook), and lose sight of what we have received and are receiving. Directing our attention back to what we have been given and what already supports us is a great antidote to this, and a great way of finding a little peace. Thinking about what we receive connects us to the whole of the present moment. Instead of only seeing the crack in the windscreen, we remember to see the beautiful view as well. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t repair the crack, but it can change how we feel and make things easier. We sometimes use discontent as a motivator. I don’t like this, so I’ll change it. I want to
30
By Kaspa Thompson be thinner, or fitter, or earn more money, or whatever, and then we plough energy into accomplishing that goal. For me the motivation that comes from dissatisfaction is unstainable. I put some energy into the project, and then I feel a little better, and the discontent goes and so the motivation goes, of Christmas Concert and the Magic project flounders. When I act from a place of celebrating what I have already the energy continues. There is always something to be thankful for. This morning I made the bed, or, I made it into my office, or I cleared my inbox. Reminding myself of the little victories brings an energy that can carry me into the next thing on my to-do list. Writing a list of what we have received in the last week, or in the last 24 hours, is a great way of keying ourselves into this kind of awareness. Research has shown that it’s better to spend a longer time writing once a week, than writing a short list each day. Why is this? I think because writing a short list we can become complacent and list the same things over and over again. Writing a longer list encourages us to really interrogate our position. The list of what we have already received is endless. Try it out for yourselves: think of what you have already received, and see how it makes you feel.

K9 LANTERNS It sounds, in the words of the people who created it, ‘a little bit yukky!’ Nevertheless, this gas lamp in West Malvern has attracted much attention, thanks to the fact its powered by dog poo! It’s taken around three years of research and development, but as soon as local sustainability group Transition Malvern Hills released details about it last month, enquiries began from around Britain and further afield. ‘It has been a busy time with the media!’ says Brian Harper, who developed the system at his Sight Designs workshops in West Malvern. ‘On New Year’s Day I was contacted by a radio station in the West of Ireland. Since then we’ve been fielding calls and emails from councils and other bodies who think it might be the solution to problems with dog mess.’ Living next to a popular route onto the Hills, Brian was only too aware of the problems caused when people don’t clear up behind their dog. Together with other volunteers from Transition Malvern Hills, he decided to find a technological solution. ‘Galvanised by Lynn Jones of our gaslamp group, The Gasketeers, we decided to look into how we might power gas lamps from biogas’ continues Brian. ‘Nathan Burlton found there had been an art installation attempt to use dog poo in the United States, but we have approached it from a more technical and commercial perspective.’ Funding from the Malvern Hills AONB helped kick-start the project. A visit to a national conference put the group in touch with a helpful manufacturer of small scale bio-digesters, a compact piece of machinery which can breakdown the dog poo (and other materials) to create biogas. Further adaptions to the biodigester were then added to create The K9 Bio Lantern System. ‘We’re now in the public testing stage, hence the initial publicity intended for Malvern residents
32
which went much further’ says Brian. ‘It is easy to use, simply pick up a free bag, scoop up, drop into the digester and walk away. We want to see the reaction of dog owners to the system and how it operates in different seasons, from winter through to summer. The signs are good’. Much data is being collected and used to finetune the design. Later this year, the group will be manufacturing the systems for use across the UK and beyond.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Use one of the free paper bags to collect your dog waste.
Place it in the hopper and turn the handle anticlockwise five times. The bio-digester breaks down the paperbag and dog waste, creating methane gas (for the lamp) and a liquid fertiliser.

Religion
PRIORY TOURS Friends of Malvern Priory are starting regular guided tours of the building this March. Nick Hewlitt who is the Guided Tours Co-ordinator tells us more. It is said that twenty pounds won’t buy you much in this day and age, but at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry the Eighth, it bought a lot more. With the destruction of many of the religious buildings in this country, the good inhabitants of Malvern travelled to London to offer to purchase the Priory for what was then then the grand sum of twenty pounds. The offer was accepted - mind you, it couldn’t be paid all at once and was forthcoming in two annual instalments. Thus was this beautiful building and proud landmark saved for posterity. Many of us here in Malvern have visited the Priory - but what treasures does it contain? Far too many to be listed in this taster, but paramount amongst them is its architectural history, one of the largest and best collections of medieval tiles in the country, the largest collection of 15th
century stained glass in any church in England (considered second only to that at York Minster), the 14th and 15th century misericords and additions from the Victorian era to the present day. Guided tours were introduced last year. They will take place on most Saturday mornings from 10.30am to 11.30am from the beginning of March until late November and on the first Wednesday in the month from 11.30am to 12.30pm, commencing on Wednesday 7th March. The cost of a tour is £4.00 (children are free) and you can obtain your ticket at the Priory shop where you will meet your guide. Groups can book in advance by contacting the Parish office (tel. no.01684 561020). All proceeds go to support the work of the Friends of Malvern Priory - we look forward to welcoming you and your friends and visitors! greatmalvernpriory.org.uk/the-friends

the queen mother's clothing guild The Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild collects new clothing and knitted items which are distributed to charities across the UK. For many years the Guild had an active Malvern branch, led by its President Jocelyn Bailey. Jocelyn was well known locally, through her involvement with Malvern Writers’ Circle and Little Malvern Priory. Before retirement she taught German at Malvern Girls’ College (which is now Malvern St James Girls’ School). She was a keen jazz fan and a member of the local branch of Parkinson’s UK. Sadly, Jocelyn passed away in 2016 and Sheilah Daughtree has now taken over as President of the local branch. ‘I’ve been involved with the Guild for the past few years and I’ve been to St James’ Palace each September to help sort and distribute donations’ says Sheilah. ‘Not only do our members make
Every year, the Guild collects more than 25,000 items which are gathered together at St James’ Palace in London, before they are distributed to many different charities. You can read more about their work at www.qmcg.org.uk items, we also raise funds through events like coffee mornings and use the money to buy new items.’ Members of the Guild can contribute as much or as little time to its work as they wish. All the clothing goes to good causes in the UK and the local branch can nominate its own charity. ‘Slowly, the Guild branch in Malvern is coming together again’ says Sheilah, ‘but I would love to hear from former members as well as anybody interested in joining us for the first time.’ If you’d like to get involved, please contact Sheilah by calling (01684) 561872 or by email, s.daughtree@hotmail.co.uk

Schola Gregoriana Malverniensis
may also occasionally sing Mass for other major celebrations of the Church’s year.
The Schola is a choir which sings the traditional music of the Catholic Church. With rehearsals every week, new singers are always welcome. Alastair Tocher tells us more. The choir was formed originally in September AD 2015 following closure of the Schola Sancti Ioseph which had formerly sung Mass at St Joseph’s RC Church, Newtown Road, Malvern twice monthly for almost eleven years. From 2015 until 2017 the Schola sang Traditional Latin Mass regularly in the private chapel of Spetchley Park near Worcester. The Schola is voluntary. Rehearsals take place weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm until 9pm at Croft Bank in Mathon and immediately before sung Traditional Latin Masses organised locally by Extraordinary Malvern (extraordinarymalvern.uk). These are typically on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 3pm in St Wulstan’s Roman Catholic Church on Wells Road in Little Malvern. The Schola
Our repertoire comprises both Gregorian Chant and polyphonic settings of both the Propers (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory and Communion) and the Ordinary of the Mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus). The complexity of music sung is adjusted according to the number and abilities of singers available on a given Sunday. This varies from simple Gregorian chant, through three-part psalm-like settings of the Propers, to more well-known motets such as Sicut cervus by Palestrina or Popule meus by Victoria along with Mass Ordinary settings by, for example, Byrd, Casciolini, Viadana and Victoria. Singers of all abilities and experience are welcome. If you might be interested in joining the Schola or simply finding out more about us, then please get in touch. Brush large heavy frying pan with melted butter, heat on a moderate heat. Drop small rounds of scone mixture (a table spoon works well for small scones) and cook until bubbles show on the surface and start to burst (2-3mins). Carefully turn over and cook for a further 2 mins. 3. Pile cooked scones in a clean folded tea towel to keep moist and warm for immediate serving 4. If serving sweet (with butter, jam, golden syrup, honey, peanut butter, chocolate spread...), add 1 level tablespoon of caster or brown sugar to the batter and replace the salt with 1 tsp mixed spice. 5. If serving savoury (with scrambled egg, smoked salmon, cream/goats cheese, bacon...) then add finely chopped rosemary and black olives or 1tsp mustard powder and a handful of grated cheddar cheese. Top tip: Make the batter a few hours earlier and leave to stand before cooking the scones.

Why Practise Yoga? By Jo Harper Potential students often ask this question. Many imagine Yoga is only for people who are very supple or ‘bendy’. However, providing that one joins a class of an appropriate level taught by a well-qualified teacher, anyone can reap the nurturing benefits of this ancient practice. Many specialised Yoga classes are available, including chair based classes for less mobile students, classes for pregnancy, the ‘gentle’ years and back pain. When I became a Yoga student 40 years ago my practice was very different to that of today. I have been very fortunate to have studied with many inspiring teachers to whom I am eternally grateful. My practice evolves to reflect my changing personal needs, physical, mental and spiritual. Initially my focus was Asana (physical yoga postures). In spite of stressful times running a business and then as a school teacher, I often went home before relaxation at the end of the yoga session – the element I now realise that I most needed! I became aware that my life was

more balanced when I attended a regular Yoga class. I began to study the philosophy (8 limbs) of Yoga and to develop breath work and meditation. I also stayed for relaxation! By 2004 Yoga had become so important to me that I undertook the 3 year British Wheel of Yoga Diploma training and subsequent modules in Pranayama (breathing), Meditation, children’s Yoga and pregnancy Yoga. I gave up my day job and began teaching Yoga in Hertfordshire and then in the Malvern area from 2009. I completed the specialist Yoga for Healthy Backs teachers’ training in 2012. I now teach this remedial back care programme at Bethesda Clinic in Ledbury to help back sufferers relieve and manage their symptoms. Why do I practice Yoga? To find balance, harmony and peaceful contentment. To build physical strength and maintain flexibility. To experience life more fully, noticing beauty in simple things. To quieten the chattering monkey which is sometimes my mind. OM SHANTI Jo Harper B Ed. BWY Dip. teaches Yoga in Malvern and Ledbury. 07976 882252 joyoga22@hotmail.com

Theatre News THE LITTLE
matchgirl AND OTHER HAPPIER TALES
LITTLE MATCHGIRL Win a family ticket (4) to this show at Malvern Theatres on Friday 23rd March at 7pm.
From the story by Hans Christian Andersen and Other Storytellers
Please answer the following question:
Emma Rice’s exquisite (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Malvern following its critically acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe.
The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales are adapted from the stories written by which Danish author?
Struggling to keep warm on the freezing winter streets, our impoverished heroine begins to strike her dwindling stock of matches. Each match she strikes conjures a new story and while it burns she escapes into an enchanting world of magic and mystery. Inspired by the beautiful Hans Christian Andersen tales, we follow her through the spell-binding stories of The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina. For adults and brave children alike this will be a truly remarkable theatre experience, full of music, laughter, puppetry and magic. Recommended age: 8+ The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th March. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk.
