February 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com Photo Front Page: 2010 Chinese New Year in Malvern by Tom Palmer Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About Malvern is distributed to 7,200 homes and businesses in Malvern Booking Deadline: For March - 10 February
Welcome to the February issue of ‘All About Malvern’. The striking image on this month’s front page is part of Chinese New Year celebrations which take place each year in Malvern. The Lion Dance is the highlight of the event, professional dancers duck and weave with practised moves in a tradition that has survived unscathed despite the recent history of political and ideological change in China. The origins of the rituals are lost in time, and certainly not native to Malvern, but their observance is supposed to bring good fortune and happiness to those involved. The celebrations promise to be a spectacle, and not something you will see every day in this neck of the woods! Everybody is welcome to watch, you can read about it in this month’s lead article. Elsewhere, if the winter months or illness are leaving you a little depleted of energy, there are plenty of local businesses offering complemenary therapies to help you feel better. Our regular columnist Allison Maxwell takes a look at the healthy eating that will help support your immune system, and we have a new column from local Coach Nick Martin with some ideas about making changes to our lives. Please take a look on Page 34. Have a good February! Sascha, Publisher & Editor

Chinese New Year Ken Tse Wai Kwong looks forward to New Year. If you run a business, it is, after all, an auspicious moment. He opened The Star on Cowleigh Road eight years ago and says his customers like the combination of a pub with a quality chinese restaurant. ‘When we opened there were just a few others like this across the whole country. Its uniqueness appeals to our customers’. The Chinese New Year at the Star has become a fixed moment in the calender and a focal point for local celebrations. ‘It’s grown year on year. Last year we had more than a hundred people and the children find it really exciting!’ says Ken with enthusiasm. The highlights include firecrackers and a lion dance show performed by professional dancers brought in especially for the event in Malvern. ‘They tell a traditional story, chasing away bad things and
‘‘
bringing luck and fortune not only to our restaurant but also for everyone who attends!’ laughs Ken. ‘I just want to give something to the people in Malvern and I want to show them something about Chinese culture’. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit. Ken was born in the Year of the Horse and tells me that even though people are supposed to take on certain characteristics of the animal, the important part is what the zodiac foretells for your animal in the coming year. If you’d like to come along to the New Year Celebrations, they take place at The Star on Cowleigh Road on 6th FEB from 2.30pm. Ken wants everybody to know you are welcome to join them! There is a buffet beforehand costing £6 per person, which starts at 12.30pm. To avoid disappointment it will be wise to book a table.

CHINESE NEW YEAR Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival and celebrates the start of new life during the season of ploughing and sowing. It’s timed to start with the first day of the lunar month and continues until the moon is brightest. During the first week friends and family will pay visits to one another and follow rituals designed to bring fortune in the coming year. Before the festivities begin houses are thoroughly cleaned in order to sweep away bad luck. Brushes and brooms are put away on New Year’s eve to make sure the good luck won’t accidentally be swept away. Banners and scrolls are hung from walls bearing lucky messages concerning wealth and happiness.
Families come together on New Year’s eve for a large, traditional meal. At midnight fireworks are let off to scare away evil spirits. People dress in new red clothing, since the colour symbolises fire to scare the evil spirits away. The New Year reaches its climax with a lantern festival. Lanterns, decorated with historic scenes or legends are hung in the windows of houses or carried under the light of the full moon. They are often hand painted with scenes from history or legend. The dragon or lion dance takes places at this time with a mythical animal made of paper, silk and bamboo held aloft by men dancing and guiding it around to collect money.

New Career? TRAIN AS A MASSAGE THERAPIST Many of us are currently looking at different ways we can live our lives. Becoming a massage practitioner can do just this enabling flexible full or part time working. You can train locally at The Fold, Bransford near Worcester where BCMB have established a second centre and offer part time professional massage training accredited by the Massage Training Institute and recognised by CNHC. The Bristol College of Massage and Bodywork approach which has evolved over 20 years, differs from many colleges in providing students with a wide range of skills so they can craft an individual person centred massage. A routine is never used. The course unusually covers how correct body use for the practitioner protects against injury and fatigue, how personal development is an essential to learning and how to look at massage from a both
12
physical anatomical perspective and an energetic one. In a nutshell this means the massage is person centred for the client receiving it and also the training is person centred for the student learning. All this with a very high tutor:student ratio from a teaching team that is ridiculously passionate about massage and massage teaching ensures graduates have the confidence to go straight into practice, as very many do. The graduates from 2010 are even now setting up in practice and seeing clients. Once qualified you can work from home, in a clinic, a health centre, spa, on-site with companies or even as some graduates have at festivals, ski resorts or on cruise ships.

Combating Flu Eat to help beat Swine Flu By Allison Maxwell from Colwall Just recently you can’t turn on the television or read a newspaper without hearing about swine flu. The recent scare has left many people asking what they can do to keep themselves and their family safe. As a nutritionist, I have always considered nutrient packed food is one of the best lines of defence against any kind of illness. A good diet can help strengthen your immune system. A strong immune system can help protect from disease. Clearly good hygeine is also crucial, which includes catching sneezes in a tissue, placing it quickly in the bin and washing hands to prevent the spread of viruses. But if you do become infected, what you eat may help to optimise the strength of the membranes in your ears, nose and throat that form an internal physical barrier against invading organisms. Protein-rich meat, chicken, eggs, fish, milk, dairy foods, pulse vegetables, nuts, seeds and soya-based foods all supply vital nourishment for the epithelial cells in these membranes. Three average-sized servings a day of any of these are important to maintain the integrity of these “barrier” tissues.
Vitamins Other options include tucking into plenty of fruits and vegetables such as carrots and pumpkins, apricots, mangoes, spinach and cabbage to maintain levels of vitamin A, another nutrient needed for strong respiratory membranes. Garlic contains allicin, formed when raw garlic is crushed or chewed. It appears to help to block the ability of viruses to invade and damage tissues. If the virus does penetrate these physical barriers, it is the job of an army of white blood cells to try to engulf viral invaders. Vitamin C appears to be especially important in playing a role in mobilising bug-eating macrophage cells. Other internal immune system bug-beaters include “T-cells”. The mineral zinc is crucial for their formation, with even a mild
deficiency being linked to more frequent colds and flu. Zinc is in eggs, beef, sardines, wholegrain foods and pumpkin seeds.
Sun and Sleep
In addition to a healthy diet, get the right amount of sleep. Sleeping helps your body repair its defences. Aim for around 7-8 hours every night, and try to stick to a regular bedtime, even at weekends. Also ensure you get out in the sun, which can be difficult at this time of the year but its still out there! Vitamin D comes from direct sun exposure and plays a major role in immune function, as well as protecting against major illnesses.
Avoid Stress!
Avoid stress! When you are stressed, your heart beats faster and your immune system slows down. Take time to relax whenever you feel the pressure. Finally, avoid adding toxins, this includes caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol. These things not only damage the immune system but can also lead to other serious health conditions.
Finally
Finally, a number of supplements can help boost the immune system or ease symptoms of flu. These include vitamin C with bioflavonoid, Echinacea, yucca and colloidal silver. Some of the above are not suitable during pregnancy or if you’re on medication. Please seek a Doctor’s advice if this applies to you.
Allison Maxwell has an MSc in Public Health Nutrition, a BSc in Nutrition & Food Science and 20 years experience in the field of food and nutrition. If you need advice ring 07771694490 for Private Nutritional Consultations.

...the FSB rep
All About...
David Bethell works for the Federation of Small Businesses in Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire. The FSB is a not-for-profit organisation that campaigns on behalf of its members and offers them business services. David is responsible for increasing membership and helping its members locally.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I’m Herefordshire born and bred, grew up in Ledbury, and apart from a short time when I lived in Malvern I’ve always lived in the county. I worked in the food industry for around thirty years, the last fifteen of which I was the Director in a small private company. As well as the day to day running of the business I travelled all over the world. Because of that experience I can understand the daily pressures that many members of the FSB face when running a small business. I came to the FSB six and a half years ago, I work as part of a team, I focus on increasing our membership in this part of the UK.
Tell us what you do?
On average I visit between 15 & 20 local business every week. If people need to see me I go and visit them, nothing replaces sitting face to face to discuss something. The same issues seem to come up time and again. Changes in legislation, the government, health and safety, tax issues, problems in relations with banks and general financial help. The issues today are increasingly difficult and we offer legal and tax advice via 24 hour help lines from a ‘real person’. We’re a big enough organisation to be able to provide this kind of expertise. The other area our size helps is in saving money through our buying ability. We offer exclusive rates on business insurance, banking, Chip and Pin, e-commerce, phones and the internet or fuel cards, and many others. We’re’not for profit’ so we negotiate a good deal, don’t take a cut ourselves and the member gets the benefit.
Has the current economic
situation changed the kind of help you give? Some small businesses have been forced to lay off staff and in general there’s still not a lot of economic confidence around. For many companies its very much
22
hand to mouth, day by day, so in some cases we have to be of immediate help, rather than working in the medium or longer term. For example if a company faces a sudden problem with its bank, or they need to hire or make someone redundant, they need help straight away. The state of the economy is affecting every type of business at the moment from new start-ups to companies that have been going for generations. One way we’re helping small businesses at the moment is the creation of local networking events, giving them the chance to talk to other people in their situation and to find new people to do business with. We’re calling it ‘Strictly Networking’ and locally they’re happening in Malvern and Hereford. It takes place between 5.30pm & 7pm in the early evening, there’s no cost or strict format, its just a case of turning up and chatting to people. As well as helping members of the FSB, the networking events are open to anybody at all, so please just come along if you’re interested. So far we’re getting good feedback about them.
How can people find out more
about the FSB and its members? The FSB website has a section with information about our local area, the address is www.fsb.org.uk/092 or if you prefer I can be called on 07821 411288. If people join we offer an online directory of members and we also produce a regional magazine which gives lots of interesting stories about businesses in our area, as well as a diary of what’s going on. I am very happy when someone joins us because I know they will get lots out of it. I think of all the business organisations out there, we’re as genuine as it comes, we offer value for money. We know the issues and we can genuinely help. The FSB website has a section with information about our local area, the address is www.fsb.org.uk/092 or if you prefer you can call David on 07821 411288 or email David.Bethell@fsb.org.uk

Lucy Walker is a fully qualified Counsellor
and Psychotherapist. She is BACP accredited and has been in private practice for the last six years. ‘My background working in management, in a large organisation, gave me a good understanding of the different issues people face in their lives. I have always had an interest in people and try to look at things from their perspective. Counselling can give you the opportunity to work things through in a space that is confidential and safe. Sometimes it can be helpful to talk to someone who
is completely neutral and not involved in your life. Whatever the issue may be, you may wish to find a different strategy of coping than you have done in the past. The constant challenge that many people face between work, relationships and family can leave them feeling overwhelmed. Stress and anxiety often builds up over a period of time and they may not notice it until the symptoms become more acute. Counselling can be a way of enabling you to feel more in control of your life. The old saying ‘If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you always got’ can often seem true. Changing behavior may seem difficult, however it’s often by making small changes you can really see a difference in how you feel. Another reason people come to counselling is to have support through what has been a difficult time in their life in order for them to move forward in the future. Some of the areas I have covered are stress, anxiety, relationships, depression, bereavement, eating disorders, addictions, abuse, phobias, family issues and work/life balance.’ Lucy works with individuals and couples and is based in West Malvern.

Community Focus Malvern Rotary Club "the Malvern College Team, winners of the 2010 Schools Public Speaking Competition"
Fact File
Organisation: Malvern Rotary Club Established: 14th July 1947 Contact: David Jones Role: President Address: Meet at Worcestershire Golf Club – Monday weekly at 7pm for 7.30pm except Bank Holidays Contact: 01684-575059 or visit website www.malvernrotaryclub.org More information: Our aim is Service above self in all aspects of personal, community and business life; The Community being local, national and international.
We place a strong emphasis on engagement in The Community, whether local or far afield. Members of Malvern Rotary Club roll up their sleeves and get involved in physical work locally, as when constructing a garden terrace for Dalvington, the Elizabeth Fitzroy Support home, on conservation work with the Conservators at Dale Hall Bog and in a carbon capture project planting 100 trees in the first phase. Also with Upton flood relief. Our longest running project is the Schools Public Speaking Competition started 36 years ago.Local State and Public Schools take part. Now we have a Primary Schools Poetry Competition. We have supplied over 200 children with dictionaries. Support for the activities of others is important: the Malvern Young Writer of the Year Competition, stewarding the St.Richard’s Hospice sponsored walk, and kit for Malvern Young Gymnasts. We take pleasure in recognising others who work voluntarily, giving Community Awards most recently to Marie Blackwell, Chairman of Malvern Theatres Association and Ray Worth, Chairman locally of Worcestershire Blind Association and Cancer Research. Rotary Clubs are largely autonomous whilst being members of their national and international organisations. One of the virtues we claim for the financial support we give to efforts outside UK is that fellow Rotarians on the ground can handle funds and direct them positively, steering clear of corruption and delay. Good examples are the money channelled to help in emergencies in 2010 in Haiti and Pakistan, and the
28
greatest of all the initiative taken in the eradication of polio globally and the millions raised in that fight. The £17000 raised by us in the Tsunami appeal was used to provide aquaboxes, shelterboxes and boats. Rotary is imagined by some to be no more than a fundraising organisation. Hopefully the above corrects that view. But fundraising is also essential if assistance is to be provided in many situations. Hence we have the Pancake Race, the Golf Day, Swim4Cash and the Mile of Pennies among others. The individual most significant project is the Tree of Light which whilst providing a symbol for those who wish to remember a loved one has nevertheless raised over £67000 since inception in 2003. In 2009 the Club committed to raising £30000 over three years to provide the new Malvern Community Hospital with a mobile ultrasound scanner. With the assistance of Malvern Inner Wheel we are on target. Malvern Inner Wheel is the association of the wives and partners of Rotarians who have their own programme and also support Rotary’s activities. Our 40odd members from a range of backgrounds, meet and dine weekly mainly with speakers and also enjoy various events and visits to other countries. President David Jones says “In Malvern Rotary Club we aim to be the service organisation of choice, helping selected charities and other organisations wherever we can and enjoy ourselves while doing it. If you would like to put something back into society and experience excellent fellowship in the process, get in touch with us now“.

The Wheel of Life Written by: Local Coach Nick Martin This introduction is the first of a series of quarterly articles. Good coaching is all about asking questions so that the client can find his or her own answers. My intention with these articles is to provide you with some thought-provoking questions to ask yourself. One of the basic tools that I and many other coaches use during the first meeting with a new client is the wheel of life. This instrument does a number of things: • it gives you a snapshot of how satisfied you are with your life as it is now; • it focuses that picture by highlighting various different elements that make up our lives; • it gives you the chance to think about the areas of your life where you would most like to make some changes. With the last point in mind, it is worth being aware that the various sections of the wheel of life are connected with each other. For example, if things are going really well (or not so well…) at work, it could have a positive (or not so positive…) effect on my health and relationships. The state of my finances is likely to have an impact on what I do for fun and recreation, and so on.

Introducing Nick I had already been working in the field of training and development for about ten years when I trained as a life coach in 2003 with the Coaches Training Institute. For me, working over an extended period on a one-to-one basis with individual coaching clients is a wonderful complement to the work that I still do with groups and teams. Working with an individual client over several months and witnessing that person overcome obstacles (often internal), achieve goals, and learn about himself or herself is incredibly rewarding. Nick Martin has an MSc in Management Development and Training, and is a Certified Professional Co-active Coach. You can contact him at nick@questhills.co.uk, or 01684 562 442. On the wheel of life on this page, draw a line in each segment to indicate how satisfied you are with that area of your life. Use a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 (the centre of the wheel) meaning “It is rubbish”, and 10 meaning “It is fantastic”. When you have done that, have a look at the wheel, and ask yourself these questions: • What is your general impression as you look at this? • If this were a real wheel, how smooth (or bumpy) would the ride be? • How hard would you be having to pedal to get anywhere? • And what about the individual sections? • Are there any high points or low points? • How might one section be affecting others? • Which are the areas where you would like to start making some changes? • Which are the two areas which, if they improved, would have the greatest positive impact on your life as a whole? • Having identified those two areas, what are some concrete steps that you could start taking – today – that will create some positive change?

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath
David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath
Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.
A case of unexplained leg pain
In practice there are many reasons why legs become painful. Muscle injuries, osteoarthritis, irritated nerves, cartilage damage etc are all common. However the following case was clearly much more interesting and unusual.
A 59 year old lorry driver came to see me with pain in the left leg which had been getting worse for 18 months. He had a history of previous left sciatica (nerve pain in the leg) following a back injury some 15 years before. After the initial examination it seemed likely that the problem was merely a recurrence of his old injury. He even had some mild wasting of the leg muscles on the left which is sometimes a sequel to sciatica. After a session or two of treatment I was surprised that he hadn’t improved so sent him for an MRI scan of his lumbar spine with a suspicion that his spinal column may have become narrowed (spinal stenosis). The scan didn’t really explain the current symptoms. The key clues that helped solve this case were that the pain was worse for walking, especially uphill and that the patient had smoked at least 30 cigarettes a day for over 40 years. With this in
The new clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk
mind I decided to put him through a treadmill test. I made him walk at 3 miles per hour for 5 minutes on a gentle incline (not normally an arduous task). The effects were striking. Within 2 minutes the left leg was very painful and by 5 minutes he was really struggling to keep going. As he walked the colour in the left leg drained away until it was white, the pulses which had been evident at rest disappeared and the temperature of that leg dropped. As any medical student will tell you, the signs of a blocked artery all begin with the letter “P”, i.e. Pain, Paraesthesia (pins and needles), Pulselessness, Power loss, and Perishing with cold! This gentleman exhibited the lot. As the patient exercised, his muscles had an increased demand for blood which could not be met by the compromised blood vessels, leading to the characteristic symptoms. A hasty referral via his GP got the patient to a vascular surgeon who was able, with further testing, to confirm the diagnosis. Often surgery is required to clear a blocked artery. However by drastically cutting back the smoking this gentleman managed to reduce his symptoms enough to avoid an operation at that time.
Treatments cost £35 per session. For an appointment or informal chat ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.
