Advice
Meeting the costs of long-term care By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall As a society we are living longer, and it is becoming more common to require residential care in our old age. It is estimated that 130,000 new individuals enter care homes each year. The cost of care is typically around £26,000 per year, but could easily be higher, depending on the level of care required and the quality of the home. Meeting the cost of care home fees can seem like a daunting prospect. Many people face this issue for the first time when a relative needs to go into a home. It can then become urgent to get clear, reliable information and unbiased advice in order to take whatever action is in the best interest of your loved ones. What is imperative is that you speak to an independent financial adviser who is both qualified and specialises in this very crucial area of advice. Smith Weale Associates meets those criteria.
6
to preserve or spend any savings, the degree of investment risk you want to take, and if you are comfortable taking on a loan or other debt. For those clients who wish to choose the care home in which they reside, that cost may well be more (and often is) than the government is willing to fund. Once again the need for a funding solution is obvious; conversely, should funds run dry, a move to a more cost-effective home can be a very distressing time indeed. I meet many people, both existing clients and prospective clients, who have very real concerns about the funding of long term care. Those concerns have been heightened of late, not least because the political debate around who should pick up the care bill remains unresolved. Various ideas being suggested including limiting an individual’s costs to £30,000 or that any bill can be settled upon one’s death, but frankly, until there is a cost effective plan in place, the cost will continue to be borne by oneself and family.
There are several options available for funding the costs of care and each should be explored and explained to help you through the pros and cons. It is also important you fully understand any entitlements that you may be able to claim including state support and benefits.
This information sets out the basics of risk and return when investing. It is not designed to be investment advice and should not be interpreted as such. Other factors will need to be taken into account before making an investment decision, Smith Weale Associates can help you with this.
The options to explore are rearranging existing investments to generate further income, securing a lifelong annuity to pay the extra income required, a loan from the local authority, spending any savings and releasing money from the value of the home. To decide which is the most suitable you need to consider your feelings about whether you want to keep the family home, if you want
We are an ageing population in the UK, so one does have to wonder where the extra money will come from should the government try to limit the costs. I am very much of the opinion that for the foreseeable future at least, long term care funding will be the responsibility of the individual and so it is imperative any advice is independent and tailored to the individual’s needs.
Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. Rob is qualified to give advice on both the funding of Long-Term Care and Equity Release and thus able to advise on the very best solutions in meeting the needs of post retirement clients and choose the very best solution tailored to your
individual circumstances from the whole of the UK market place.

our street the story of Wedderburn Rd A passion for local history and a community gathering inspired people living on Wedderburn Road in Barnards Green to research the history of their neighbourhood.
It all began when one of the residents, Faith Renger, created a booklet. ‘I started researching the road’s history because I love the subject, but I also knew elderly people who’d lived on this road their entire lives. Some were in their 80s and were really keen to talk about the old times. They liked the idea of it being published, in particular on the web, even though they didn’t use computers themselves.’ Another neighbour, Catherine Banks, who also loves the subject and runs an IT consultancy (Nepeta Consulting) got on board. She designed the Wedderburn Road website by combining the booklet with opportunities for current local stories and news.
company called Stevens which had a bookshop at the top of Church Street. As well as general information about Malvern, the local climate, clubs and business, it also included a street directory with the names and numbers of houses as well as the name and profession of the head of the household. It really was an invaluable resource.’
For more information, please look at wedderburnroad.org.uk
The street saw its fair share of weddings, and one photograph shows an Edwardian wedding party posed outside the front door. The newlyweds, John and Polly Tandy, would spend their tragically short married life in Barbers Hill before he lost his life on the battlefields of the First World War.
Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the area now called Wedderburn Road was simply two fields to the east of Pound Bank. The fields were named as Barbers Hill and Barbers Meadow. The land was acquired by a local property developer called Fredrick William Hayes and the first houses were built in 1901. To research the early years, Faith and Catherine Banks relied on local archives. ‘We used information from the census and maps of the area’ says Catherine, ‘as well as a local street directory. This was a manual, a little bit like a telephone book. It was published every year by a
12
Some of the stories the project uncovered about the street are fascinating. One memory is of a woman called Dorothy, who as a child stood at the window of the family home one night during World War One. She remembered watching a German Zeppelin caught in searchlights above Worcester.
In between the wars, houses continued to be built in a piecemeal fashion, and to their own design, giving the road its unique character today. Electricity didn’t arrive in the road until the 1940s, and many of the homes relied on their own wells for a water supply. Even as late as the 1960s, one resident remembers at least one household with no indoor bathroom or toilet. The stories and memories haven’t just come from the older residents. Other, younger members of the community and those who moved in more recently have also joined the historical research. ‘The website has helped to spread the word,

people have found it and been in touch’ says Catherine. ‘One person wrote and told us that he had spotted the photograph of an the Edwardian wedding party, and realised it was the house his parents family still live in. As they own another, the family had connections with other houses in the road, he has more information for us that could help expand our knowledge further’. Were the women surprised by the enthusiasm? ‘Not really’ says Faith, ‘a lot of people were involved and we knew there’s a real interest in social history. We live in an age where tracing your own family has become quite a hobby & a pursuit, and this research does that on behalf of people living in the street’. One of Faith’s favourite stories is of a child who used to go to a nearby shop and buy liquourice. ‘That simple story generated so many memories and nostalgia for so many people’ she says, ‘I think it’s that sort of memory that got a lot of people quite hooked’.
‘Wedderburn Road is one of those places that once you move in, you rarely move out!’, laughs Catherine. There’s a good community spirit here’. While older residents remember a strong sense of community, Wedderburn Road has managed to retain some of that spirit in changing times. Locals still turn out each December for carol singing in the street, and big national events like the Queen’s Golden & Diamond Jubilees have seen organised celebrations. For the Diamond Jubilee the residents held a cheese and wine evening, coffee morning, plant sale, barbecue and go kart racing in the road. In all, the events raised almost £800 for charity. Now (2012)
If you have historical information, stories or anecdotes about life in Wedderburn Road then the group would love to hear from you. On history: Faith Renger 01684 575172 Website: Catherine - 01684 567081

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath
David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath
Your questions answered: After 22 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.
Topic of the month: Leg Pain due to Sciatica True sciatica is pain that runs down the back of the buttock and thigh into the calf and often the foot. It may be accompanied by numbness, pins and needles and even weakness. All down the ages humans have suffered with sciatica. William Shakespeare mentions it in his play Timon of Athens. “Thou cold sciatica, cripple our senators, that their limbs may halt as lamely as their manners”
What are the main causes of sciatica? The sciatic nerve is the biggest nerve in the body, being roughly the thickness of a little finger at its thickest point. Inevitably a nerve of that size will give serious pain if something goes wrong. Most sciatica comes from spinal problems such as damaged discs, spinal instability (spondylolisthesis) and degenerative changes associated with aging. Occasionally sciatica can be caused by underlying disease. There is also a muscle deep in the buttock called the piriformis which can in effect “strangle” the sciatic nerve in some patients (piriformis syndrome).
Other causes of leg pain
Hip problems will give rise to leg pain though unlike sciatica this normally travels down the front of the leg, between the groin and the knee. This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk
There are also other nerves of the leg which can give rise to pain such as the femoral nerve which arises from slightly higher up the lumbar spine. Blood circulatory problems may also mimic sciatica.
How is it treated?
In many cases sciatica responds very well to physical therapy. Specific localised massage of the spinal and leg muscles combined with joint manipulation helps many patients. Others do better with medical acupuncture and exercise therapy. I use all these techniques in my practice. Severe cases may require MRI scan and surgery.
Point of Interest
As a rule, it is not advisable to apply heat to sciatica. If the nerve is already irritable, heat can increase the inflammation and make matters worse even though it may feel good initially. If in doubt try cold first. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

Divorce
recovery workshop Every year at least 300,000 people in Britain go through divorce or the breakdown of a significant relationship. Yet, while society allows the bereaved to take years to adjust, the divorced and separated are frequently expected to “pull themselves together” in a matter of weeks, unaided. Kathleen Barclay explains how Divorce Recovery Workshop can help. When I was looking for a local support group for people going through a divorce, I discovered that there was nothing available in the Malvern area. After travelling some distance to attend a Divorce Recovery Workshop (DRW) I found the course so helpful and inspirational that, with the help of DRW, I have got a team together to set up a Malvern branch, currently the only one in Worcestershire. You go through many different emotions during separation or divorce, from shock and disbelief, to rejection, anger, bitterness and guilt. If you’re alone with these issues, or receiving misguided advice, the situation can be even worse. It doesn’t matter at what stage of the process you are, whether its weeks or even years, you may still need help. Divorce Recovery Workshop is a non-profit making, voluntary organisation which aims to help individuals come to terms with a marriage or relationship that has irretrievably broken down, to grow through the experience and to aid recovery. The Malvern course will be run by a team of experienced facilitators, who have all suffered a divorce or relationship breakdown themselves and have completed the workshops. A course consists of six 2-hour sessions for which there is a charge, just to cover costs. The environment is supportive and confidential. In each workshop, small groups, prompted by a video, discuss different aspects of divorce, from acceptance of the situation through to thinking about new relationships. However, it’s not a dating agency! The whole structure of the workshops and the company of people going through the same experience made such a
difference to my life, and let me move on. Our help is offered unconditionally to anyone - the only qualification for attending is that participants have experienced the irretrievable breakdown of a significant relationship. We are mainly about group work, participants are encouraged, but never pressured, to share their experiences and learn from others in the group. The workshop helps people have a better understanding of what they are going through. It also provides support and friendship from others in similar situations. DRW also provides a new circle of friends after the workshop is over. We offer an excellent basis to commence and continue recovery. The next DRW course will be run on 3 Saturdays, fortnightly, on 3rd &17th November and 1st December 2012. There will be one morning and one afternoon session each Saturday with an hour lunch break in between the 2 sessions. DRW is a non-profit making charity but we ask participants to pay £50 for the full course to cover our costs. The venue has free parking and is a 5-minute drive from Malvern town centre. Through the Long Grass Malvern artist Tia Lambert returns to iapetus gallery this October with a brand new exhibition, Through the Long Grass. Her fifth exhibition at the Great Malvern gallery, the show will feature a new collection of flowing watercolours and bolder oil paintings that have taken the artist into new and unfamiliar territory.
contact the gallery for details.
Oil paintings represent a new direction for Tia, and are unlike anything her followers will have seen before, with stronger, bolder colours and a feeling that one could almost step into the scene. Alongside these works will be 20 new watercolours, in the spontaneous style for which she has become renowned, each representing a different view through the grasses and wildflowers towards the Malvern Hills.
Tia studied Fine Art, followed by a diploma at the Royal Academy Schools, Piccadilly. She now lives and works in Malvern, and teaches painting and drawing at South Worcestershire College. When creating her watercolours, Tia works outdoors, directly from the landscapes around her, while her oil paintings ground her to the studio.
As part of the exhibition, iapetus gallery will host an intimate, informal evening talk and demonstration with Tia Lambert on Monday 9th October for a limited number of guests. Please
iapetus is a contemporary showcase for high quality, handmade jewellery, gifts, home accessories and artworks, and is run by a friendly and knowledgeable team.
An artist’s calendar, entitled ‘A Year in Malvern’, will return by popular demand for 2013 and will be available at the exhibition, taking us through the seasons with twelve beautiful pieces. About Tia Lambert

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Advice
Rachel Howell & Benedict Recordon
Lasting Powers of Attorney a peace of mind by Benedict Recordon of Whatley Recordon Recently there have been some shocking statistics concerning dementia; one in four of the present population is likely to get some shape or form of this disease. Of course, there are other illnesses which can also affect your ability to cope with your affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney for Property and Financial Affairs or Health and Welfare allow you to choose a person, known as your attorney, to make decisions on your behalf.
suitable to act as your attorney or you do not wish to burden them with the responsibility, WhatleyRecordon offer a service where we can act as your attorney. We ensure that your affairs are kept in good order, always keeping your best interests in mind. Benedict Recordon and Rachel Howell look after clients who have made that choice.
For more detailed advice come and see us at WhatleyRecordon on 12 Worcester Road, Malvern, our car park is right behind our building, which is located next to the Foley Arms (Wetherspoons) or call 01684 892939.
Like making a Will, we urge everyone to consider Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). They can give peace of mind to you and your loved ones in what could be a stressful period in your life. If you lose capacity to make decisions for yourself and do not have an LPA in place, costly court applications may be required to appoint a deputy on your behalf. If you do not have someone who you consider

Christmas trends this year It might still be months away, but for some local businesses planning for the festive season begins much sooner. Jane Knowles, owner of Just So in Barnards Green, gives away some tips of the trade. “I cannot believe it is a year since we last talked about Christmas trends in Gifts and Decorations. I suppose that is one of the problems that the years seem to whizz by so quickly, especially when you start your gift buying for next Christmas in February! I think that is what makes us treasure the Christmas period when we spend a little ‘time out’ with friends and family and lay down future memories. One of the trends we have definitely been supporting is the ‘Made in Britain’ brand. Quality craftsmanship is also a key factor. So we have a new range of beautiful carved animal shaped book-ends which are made in rural England. Carrie Elspeth jewellery is made just over the border into Wales and features wonderfully coloured beads and pearls and are lovely and light to post which is always a consideration when friends and family live further afield. We have a pretty and fragrant new organic beeswax toiletry range which uses essential oils. Beeloved, Bee-calm and Bee-happy are the three fragrance choices with artist illustrated packaging and 3% of the company’s profit goes to bee
28
conservation. What could ‘bee’ better! By buying from small, independent suppliers we make sure our stock selection is different than what is offered on the high street. The folksy, vintage trend is still very strong, with people’s wish to connect with the security of the past, so Jigsaw Puzzles , family games and fun joke shop style stocking fillers will be popular. Games that allow all the family to get involved and have fun together such as Beetle Drive are perfect, I see our large ‘Beano’ Jigsaw being a real hit. Following this trend we have the cutest retro style children’s pyjama sets which feature planes, trains and vintage lettering. Happy, smiley rag dolls are from the same company and again made in England. Our range of ‘Me to You’ guided Journals which you give to a relative and they then write down their memories and thoughts so they can be kept and shared by family members in the future. This is a great way of sharing and linking the different generations of the family together. Christmas decorations will be traditional but with a twist. Quirky, fun, craft based tree decorations in reds and greens with a little touch of glamour such as our beautiful scarlet feather birds. Decorations that will be carefully chosen and then treasured for years to come along with the memories they bring.”

Christmas in Malvern The countdown has started. The aroma of roasting chestnuts, mulled wine, pine and winter spices will soon be in the air. The joy of Christmas is just around the corner!
And to add to the anticipation, once again this year, eager youngsters will be able to post their letters to Father Christmas at the Malvern Tourist Information Centre.
And Saturday December 1 will be the perfect opportunity to get into the festive mood by coming along to this year’s Christmas In Malvern event.
The Christmas Victorian Post Box, kindly loaned by the Great Malvern Royal Mail Delivery Office, will be placed as usual inside the Malvern Tourist Information Centre at the top of Church Street just below Belle Vue Island.
The all-day event will have a range of entertainment - including local bands, orchestras, choirs, street entertainers and stilt walkers – a parade, an arts market, a food and drink market as well as other stalls. The town’s Christmas lights will be officially switched on at 6pm by Emma Nowell from the Hi-5 children’s programme, who is playing Cinderella in the pantomime at Malvern Theatres, and Jamie Rickers from GMTV’s children’s Toonattik show, who is playing Buttons in the panto. Hundreds of people are expected to pour into the centre of Malvern during the day and to see the annual festive spectacle of the Christmas lights switch-on.
Children will be able to post their letters with a special £1 stamp and will receive a personal reply with a small gift from Father Christmas direct from the North Pole. Proceeds from the event are being donated to support the Acorn’s Children’s Hospice. Last year £178 was raised for Acorn’s. The Post Box will open in the week beginning Monday November 12 and will also be accessible in the evening of Saturday December 1 when the Christmas lights are switched on. The last date for posting letters will be Friday 14th December.

The Malvern Kitchen Studio Ltd
brand new showroom in Barnards Green
Gary Williams, a Worcestershire kitchen designer with more than 26 years of experience in the industry, finally brings his new business home to Malvern. With his wife Jane, Gary has launched The Malvern Kitchen Studio Ltd. in Barnards Green, Malvern on the site of the former Toy Library, on the Six Ways Trading Estate. It is a lifelong dream finally fulfilled! Having lived in Malvern for nearly 14 years, Gary was keen to bring his designs home and establish a new and innovative design studio at the foot of the Hills. The showroom, now fully open, brings together a mix of both contemporary and traditional style kitchens in several design bays, each one named after a hill or area in Malvern. One bay, The Beacon, even includes working appliances, such as an induction hob, ovens, fridge freezer, coffee machine, dishwasher and hot water tap. All of which enables the customer to take advantage of free refreshments on tap. “Many other showrooms can be quite bland and
uninviting. I’ve always thought that a kitchen studio should give you a real feel for what your new kitchen could actually feel like in terms of all your senses!” Gary said. Pop in and smell the coffee! Along with a children’s play kitchen to keep the little ones amused, plenty of free literature and unlimited free parking in front of the studio, Gary and his wife Jane hope to help you realize your dream kitchen in a relaxed and comfortable environment. Gary also offers a free quotation service using the latest CAD system and is more than happy to visit you in your own home to discuss your kitchen needs and wants.
Visit The Malvern Kitchen Studio daily between 9-5 or Saturdays 10-4 for a chat and a cuppa! Make a note of their Open Weekend in October 20th/21st.

All About...
Malvern Community Forest Rachel McQueen, the Secretary of Malvern Community Forest tells us more about their exciting project and how you can get involved this autumn.
When did the idea of a community forest begin?
In 2008 a group of woodland enthusiasts sowed the acorn of an idea: to re-create the Malvern Chase, which, hundreds of years ago, was a large area of forest covering 13 parishes, centred on Malvern. Unlike the old Chase, this new Forest would belong to the people of Malvern, not to the King of England! It would be a centre for recreation, with scope for social activities and learning, a haven for wildlife, and a place to escape to for peace and solitude.
What was local reaction?
The people of Malvern have dug deep in every way to support us which is fantastic and really encouraging. Armed with donations of money and tools, and land to plant on, our members and volunteers have already planted thousands of trees of native British stock. Our outdoor activities have proved very popular, as volunteers learn how to swing a bill hook to best effect, to tell spindle from sycamore, and discover how amazing a simple brew tastes when mixed with a good dose of fresh air and a whiff of wood smoke.
How many people are now involved?
As well as our strong core membership of over 50 individual members, many of whom have supported us from the start, we have branched out to welcome corporate members. For example, Solar Solutions, together with the Woodland Trust, sponsored our Jubilee Oak Planting Day in March this year. We have strong links with organisations such as Malvern Hills Conservators and the Malvern Hills AONB so that we can directly influence the creation of more Green Infrastructure in Malvern.
38
What is the ultimate aim?
To bring the Forest to your doorstep! We hope to achieve this with the help of our members, whether they take an active role or join as a pledge to support our aims. We are very grateful to supporters who have donated money to us because our Committee is actively seeking out land suitable for purchase. At the same time, by offering practical opportunities for people to learn about woodland, we are building skills and knowledge in the community so that new woodland we establish will be both well used and well looked after.
Is anything happening this autumn?
Yes. We are holding a series of practical sessions for old hands and newcomers, taking place at Townsend Way Community Woodland, once a month on a Sunday from 10am-1pm. Numbers are limited so please get in touch with us in advance for more information. In addition our AGM takes place on Friday 23rd November and everyone is welcome to attend. The venue is the Hospitality Suite at Malvern Theatres, it’s from 6-8pm and our Chair will give an overview of what we’re about and what we’ve achieved.
For more information look at www.malverncommunityforest. org.uk where you can become a member, make a donation, or just find out more. You can also contact the group via email info@ malverncommunityforest.org.uk or contact the Chair Mike GoodfellowSmith on 07966 283280.

Malvern festival of innovation By Adrian Burden
On 8th & 9th November Malvern plays host to its first ever Festival of Innovation. One of the organisers, Adrian Burden says our town already has a proud tradition of innovation which has influenced the world. Malvern has played host to numerous innovations over the years, and not all of them were technology-based. Holywell Spring at Malvern Wells was the source of the first bottled water in the UK; today Britain’s bottled water industry is estimated to be worth 1.5 billion pounds! Water was the source for another local innovation. James Gulley was an entrepreneur who saw the appeal for offering a water cure to the rich, famous and ill in the mid 1800s. This established Malvern as a key visitor destination, bringing in wealth from London and funding much of the Victorian infrastructure that is still part of our town today. In education too, we’ve led the way. The Elms School in Colwall is one of the oldest preparatory schools in the UK which paved the way for a paradigm change in children’s education and ultimately the private school system. Malvern continues to be a leader in the private education sector, attracting students from around the world. For most people though, innovation is associated with science, technology and invention. Thanks to Malvern’s heritage as a key Ministry of Defence research establishment, the town has a long list of technical innovations to its name. Some of the most famous include radar, liquid crystals for displays, and touch screens. Today the innovation continues at QinetiQ, on the Malvern Hills Science Park, at the Wyche Innovation Centre, and at the
42
Enigma Business Park and surrounding industrial estates. Malvern is also a Transition Town with people innovating for sustainability and an improved environment; the Colwall Car Club being one example. To celebrate this history and to look forward to many more years of good ideas, Malvern Theatres and Malvern College will play host to the Malvern Festival of Innovation on the 8th and 9th November. Several high profile speakers have agreed to participate, and symposia will cover innovation in cyber security, digital media, materials and devices, as well as sustainability and the environment. There will be an exhibition of companies at the cutting edge of technology and organisations that help them to succeed. There will also be a business symposium running in parallel to the other sessions, to help guide entrepreneurs and businesses through the process of starting and growing an innovative business. During this symposium, there will also be a chance for entrepreneurs to give an elevator pitch to a panel of finance and investment experts. With generous support from sponsors, including several local companies and organisations, the event is free to attend. Members of the public and business professionals alike are encouraged to tour the exhibition and register to join the themed symposia. There will also be a formal dinner on the evening of Thursday 8th November at Malvern College.
More details can be found at www.festival-innovation.com, or from the organisers Key IQ Ltd, who can be contacted on (01684) 252152 or via email, adrian.burden@key-iq.com

Well-Being
be happier being mindful By Fiona Robyn from Malvern ‘Mindfulness’ is a word that is bandied around a lot at the moment. What is it, and more importantly how can it help us in our ordinary lives? Mindfulness is an attentive awareness of the reality of things, especially in the present moment. It is often associated with Buddhist teachings, and Buddhism has helped to popularise the technique here in the West. Mindfulness is pausing the difference between gulping down an apple while doing something else and appreciating every crisp, sweet, delicious mouthful. So why should we be more mindful? There are many ways in which mindfulness has helped me in my own life. The main one is that it connects me more intimately with myself, the people around me and the world. If I take the time to really notice the frilly tangerine poppies on the walk to town, their beauty feeds me. If I pay attention to the tension in my shoulders, I can breathe out slowly and help them to relax. These small moments of ‘spaciousness’ add up. Mindfulness helps me to see more of the truth around me. It’s easy to jump to conclusions, especially when we’re invested in things being a particular way. Closer observation might help me to understand other people’s motivations with more empathy, or be more honest with myself about my own behaviour. Being mindful is also helpful when we experience intense emotion or we are in physical pain. If we are prone to losing our temper, we could practice by noticing the physical reactions we have when we start to feel angry, the thoughts we have, the particular things other people do that seem to trigger us... Mindfulness can give us a way of not being quite so ‘swept up’ by the intense emotion or pain. It allows us to keep a part of ourselves separate and grounded, as we look in and ‘observe ourselves’ with equanimity. Here are my tips to help you experiment with mindfulness. 1. Develop a daily meditation practice. If we
46
practice mindfulness in a ‘concentrated form’ regularly, then this will leak into the rest of our days. Set aside five or ten minutes, sit comfortably, and simply pay attention to your breath. Many, many thoughts and sensations will come and go – that’s normal – just let them pass and return to noticing your breath as it goes in and out. Over time this practice will help your thoughts settle and improve your capacity for mindfulness. 2. Try mindful eating. When you next eat a meal, turn off the television and the radio. Slow everything down. Take your time looking at the food and noticing how hungry you feel. As you take your first bite, pay close attention to the taste and texture of the food. Between each mouthful, put your cutlery down. Notice when you’re full and stop eating. 3. Stay in touch with your body. Check in with your body a few times a day. What position are you in? Where is there tension? How do you feel? How connected do you feel to your body in this moment? What is it asking you to do? 4. Write small stones. This daily observational writing practice will guarantee that you notice one thing properly every day. You don’t have to be a writer to write small stone,–and you’ll only need a few minutes a day. Read more at www.writingourwayhome.com.

Community focus
finding fundraisers for Marie Curie Cancer Care Marie Curie Cancer Care are looking for people who want to have fun, get involved with like-minded individuals and raise money for the charity to join their Malvern Fundraising Group.
The charity believes that everyone with cancer and other illnesses should have the high quality care and support they need at the end of their life in the place of their choice. For most of us, this is at home, surrounded by close friends and family and by the things that we love.
a recent fundraising group made up of eight members has already raised over £10,000 after beginning last October. This group has members from several backgrounds, some of which were warm to Marie Curie before the group was set up and others which are new to the charity.
Marie Curie Cancer Care makes that possible for patients and family right here in Worcestershire where we have eighteen local Marie Curie Nurses. They provide quality hands on care to patients at home right through the night, or during the day, along with vital emotional support for their families.
Local Marie Curie Nurse, Ann Brady says “Everyone should have access to high quality end of life care when they need it, and in their place of choice. For most people this means dying at home. Worcestershire Marie Curie Nurses want to help more people who live locally but we can only do it with your support. By joining your local fundraising group you are helping us to achieve this”
The service is always free of charge, but we urgently need support to reach more people. One of the ways Marie Curie are looking to do this is by setting up fundraising groups that will represent the charity locally by encouraging and supporting fundraising. Community Fundraiser, Richard Scott says “Fundraising groups are a wonderful way to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. They contain members from a variety of backgrounds work hard together to bring in money for such a fantastic cause whilst socialising and having fun. It really is a great way to get involved” Generally groups meet once every six weeks to discuss their fundraising plans which include, a Blooming Great Tea Party, supermarket collections, coordinating our Great Daffodil Appeal locally and raising awareness of Marie Curie Cancer Care on a local level. By joining the Malvern Fundraising Group for Marie Curie Cancer Care, you can make a big difference in your community. You don’t have to be a current support of Marie Curie to get involved and we would love to welcome new supporters to the charity. In fact just across the border in Herefordshire,
52
The great thing is that there are no limits to fundraising groups − it is perfectly feasible for a group of friends to come together in their own local area to put one together with our help. Groups are supported by the local fundraising team and they are supplied with resources including bunting, t-shirts, name badges and business cards. We would love to hear from anyone interested either in getting involved in a group or in setting up their own. We realise that people know their local communities better than anyone else and we want to bring them together so they can use their skills, contacts and friendship groups to the advantage of a really worthwhile charity.

What a difference a year makes Church Walk, Malvern WR14 2XH
In early October, just one year after The Malvern Event Organiser shop opened, it is moving to larger premises in Church Walk and expanding its range of products and services. With a background in tourism and charity fundraising owner Sarah Grout is keen to support community events. ”The Malvern Event Organiser aims to be a one-stop shop for the amateur event and party planner, whether for charity, business or leisure. By offering a range of party supplies, our own event programme, links to services, a box office for even the smallest of events and a meeting room we hope to be regarded as the community event organiser’s friend.” The Church Walk shop already boasts products and services as diverse as helium balloon decoration, fancy dress, party tableware, international flags, and a loot bag zone for children’s parties but is introducing further products. Sarah said “We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Cake Woman who will be demonstrating and supplying her amazing celebration cakes directly from the new shop.”
