The sun is shining whilst I am writing this, and long may it continue. Let’s hope June and July will bring us those nice warm days that this time of year should bring. Its nice to get something for nothing, and if you turn to Page 52 you’ll find our competition to win free tickets to ‘The 39 Steps’, a comedy based on the 1930s Alfred Hitchcock film. We’re fortunate to have such quality theatre on our doorstep, and this is your chance to see a show for free! Well done to Len, Norma, Martina & Andrew, who all went to see The Woman in Black last month. Even if you don’t win, there’s still lots of free events around town this Summer, so read on for more ideas. And don’t forget to support all the local businesses featured here, they are part of what makes Malvern so unique! Enjoy the read.

Great Malvern
Civic Week
Its a chance to visit beautiful houses, enjoy classical music and learn something about the rich history of Malvern. This year’s Civic Week is packed with things to do, Katharine Barber co-ordinates it on behalf of Malvern Civic Society and tells us more. Great Malvern Civic Week takes place from 12th until 20th July 2013
6
This is only the third time we’ve held a Civic Week and its really grown in popularity. This year we’re holding it in the same week as Malvern in Bloom, so the town should look at its best, the Carnival Procession and Ball are happening as well so its a good week all round.
Mike Gill, from the Himalyan Trust, is a climber from New Zealand who was a lifelong friend of Sir Edmund Hillary. Mike will be giving the Everest Anniversary Lecture sixty years after the mountain was successfully climbed for the first time.
We’re fortunate to have some fascinating people giving talks this time round. Paula Byrne has written a highly-regarded biography of Jane Austen which made it into the Sunday Times Top Ten bestsellers list. She’ll be telling us that Jane Austen was a far more interesting and tough woman than conventional opinion suggests on Tuesday, 16th July.
We try to offer something for everyone, a lot of people come to learn more about our history, but there’s also music, walks and literary events including a competition. After covering costs, any money raised during the week is donated to various charities, so good causes benefit from the week as well. Civic Week Highlights on page 8

Great Malvern
Civic Week Highlights Great Malvern Civic Week takes place from 12th until 20th July 2013 BEAUTIFUL HOUSES AND GARDENS Whitbourne Hall is a grand Victorian house built in the Palladian style. A visit is being arranged in the afternoon of Monday 15th July. Perrycroft, a fine example of an Arts and Craft style house on Jubilee Drive is opening its Garden on Tuesday 16th July. FAMOUS LOCALS Jenny Lind was perhaps the most famous international singing star of Victorian times. From humble beginings she sang in opera houses across Europe and toured extensively in America. She spent her final years living near the British Camp at Wynds Point and is buried at Great Malvern Cemetery. On Monday 15th July there is a talk about Jenny Lind by Arthur Candenquist, an American who has spent more than 46 years researching her life story. At the same time there will be a display of Jenny Lind memorabilia and there are plans for a musical celebration. The Foster family of Malvern made a huge contribution to cricket both locally and nationally. Seven Foster brothers played for Worcestershire. One of them, nicknamed ‘Tip’, managed an innings of 287 against Australia in 1903-4, which to this day remains the highest score of any batsmen in a Test debut. His other claim to fame was to be captain of both the England football and cricket teams! Anthony Collis has diligently researched the family’s history, and will be giving a presentation that will help fund the restoration of the Foster’s family grave in Great Malvern Cemetery.

Malvern Carnival & Ball After the great success of last year’s Jubilee celebrations in the town, Malvern is celebrating once again on 13th July with a Carnival. ‘We had such fun for the Jubilee last year, we want to recapture some of that spirit’ says Jane Knowles, one of the carnival organisers who also runs the Just So Gift Shop in Barnards Green. ‘The Carnival takes place on Saturday 13th July, just as Great Malvern Civic Week begins. There will be lots happening locally and the town will look at its best.’ The carnival procession starts at 2pm from Belle Vue Terrace, and can be watched from any point on the route which takes it down to the Link, turning into Pickersleigh Road and making its way to Barnards Green.
All money raised from the day will go to Homestart Malvern Hills which supports local families and children. A week later, at the end of Civic Week, The Malvern Carnival Ball is being held. ‘Its a Masked Ball’ says Jane, ‘taking place at the Abbey Hotel on Saturday 20th July. This is not a stuffy event but will be lots of fun, as well as a welcome drink and three course meal, there will be some fabulous live music with dancing until the early hours.’
‘We have several themes for floats, and people taking part in the Carnival Parade’ says Jane, ‘including Victorian Malvern, Edible Gardens and Sixty Years of Everest. There’s also an Open Category for groups who wanted to do something different.’ Anyone wishing to take part in the procession can find more information on www.malverncarnival.org Among the floats will be vintage cars and a procession of Morgan cars. When it arrives at Barnards Green, many more activities are planned. ‘We have bake-off being run by the Cafe in the Green, anybody can bring their cake along to compete for a prize. We also have a ‘Plant a Bean’ competition for children, who can win £50 in garden vouchers. There’s also a fun Dog Show, behind Masefield Vets, and the classes include ‘Dog with The Waggiest Tail, Best Behaved Dog, and ‘The Dog The Judge Would Most Like To Take Home!’. For further details and entry forms please see www.malverncarnival.org

Local Books
Many creative people choose to make Malvern their home. For others, the Hills and the town become the inspiration for their work. Here’s a selection of recent book releases with a local connection. The Water Doctor’s Daughters by Pauline Conolly is a true crime story and Victorian melodrama centred on the troubled family life of Malvern water-cure practitioner, Dr James Marsden. In 1852 a governess arrives, but a year later two of Dr Marsden’s daughters are dead and the governess is charged with murder. Although based in Australia, Pauline Conolly uncovered this story while carrying out local historical research. Her book was launched at the Malvern Book Cooperative earlier this year and can be bought from the shop on St Ann’s Road.
Thaw by Satya Robyn is the story of a 30-something woman who’s looking for a reason to carry on living. Lonely and stricken by grief, she gives herself three months to decide whether to go on beyond her thirty-third birthday but when she meets Red, an eccentric artist, she feels the faint stirrings of love. But can Red thaw Ruth’s frozen heart – and does he want to? Can Red save Ruth from herself and make her believe life is worth living, before it’s too late? Satya Robyn lives and writes in Malvern. English Essentials Explained by Jill Bray is perhaps a book we should all read. Do you always know whether to write Its or It’s with an apostrophe? Do you accidentally write less when really it should have been fewer? Jill’s book clearly lays out the rules of the English language, explaining the basics needed to write and speak elegantly in every situation. The key pitfalls are explained in plain words, supported by examples of how, why, where and when to use certain words, phrases and grammatical constructions. It could be an invaluable reference book for those English language emergencies! Jill Bray is a former English teacher, librarian and examiner who lives in Malvern. Having Faith in Criminal Justice is written by Richard Rosoman, who was the Vicar of Holy Trinity Church Malvern and St James West Malvern before working for the Probation Service. Probation and the whole criminal justice system is facing major changes, and Richard’s book looks at policies, the causes of offending and approaches to rehabilitation and punishment from a Christian perspective. These are vitally important political issues which will be of interest to many people. The book is short and written in an accessible style, and is on sale locally at the Malvern Book Co-operative and Lyttleton Well Bookshop, and as an e-book. Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui is written by Malvern-based author, Karen Kingston, whose two books have each sold more than a million copies and been translated into 25 languages. In this book, which has just been published in its third edition, Karen explains how clutter can be seen as stuck energy with far reaching physical, mental, emotional and spiritual effects. Her book is designed to motivate you to clutter-clear as never before, once you realise just how much your junk has been holding you back!

Many of our Village Friends are attending events we hold and are booking trips to the Rose Garden in Hereford to see and appreciate what village living is like.
Sales Presentations start in June The much anticipated news on apartment prices and village fees will be released at the end of June 2013. We will be holding a series of Sales presentations over a three week period to provide a comprehensive overview on all the apartment prices and, what a resident can expect to pay in annual village fees. A letter will be sent to our Friends of Clarence Park Village where we will offer a time, day and date to attend a Sales Presentation. The numbers at each meeting will be kept small to ensure we can answer your questions. It is important that you are registered on our Friends of Clarence Park Village database to ensure you receive an invitation. All About...
Malvern Hills Repair Cafe The Malvern Hills Repair Café is a community-led project to inspire the repair, re-use and recycling of things we might otherwise throw away. It was founded by Jan and Chris Dyer who run regular events in Malvern where you can bring goods along to be repaired.
So how does the Repair Café work? Malvern Hills Repair Café is a relaxed friendly café environment where people are invited to bring all kinds of household and personal items to be repaired for free. Many of us have lost the practical skills needed to repair and mend; a Repair Café helps people to see their possessions in a new light, to value them and to foster self-reliance and upskilling. Our team of volunteer repairers offer a wide selection of practical skills, they work with visitors to show them how a simple repair can give their belongings a new lease of life. Although there is no charge for any repair undertaken or advice given, we do rely on donations and refreshment sales to cover the hire of the venue and help develop the service.
Where does the idea come from? The concept originated in the Netherlands in 2009 where the network has grown to over a hundred Repair Cafés located in most major towns and cities. The Dutch government quickly recognised the value of Repair Cafés and now provides substantial funding. They are still relatively new in England and, as far as can be ascertained, Malvern Hills Repair Café is one of only two or three in the country. Since December we have repaired close to two hundred broken, damaged or torn items. Many other people call in to see what is happening at a Repair Café and stay to chat and watch the repairers at work. The social and community aspect of what we do is extremely important.
What do people bring in?
Repairs range from the easy to the challenging and repairers have dealt with electrical and electronic items, furniture, garments and
20
jewellery, tools, bicycles and toys. Most items are hand portable and have included the usual selection of electrical goods such as kettles, toasters and vacuum cleaners. The more unusual items have included umbrellas, a split Wellington boot and a wind-up fluffy singing goat that had temporarily lost its voice! Sometimes only advice can be given or the item is beyond repair, but the repair success rate has been close to 90%. We regard the Repair Café very much as a ‘clinic’ rather than a ‘hospital’.
Are you pleased with the success of the Café? We have been amazed and very gratified with its success since it first opened its doors on Saturday 1 December 2012! Since the beginning, not only have the visitor numbers been steadily increasing but we have also been touched and enthused by the number of people who have offered to get involved as volunteers, either as repairers or helping with administration and serving refreshments. We now have a remarkable team of highly skilled and committed repairers to whom we are extremely grateful as, without them, the Repair Café would not be able to continue. We are always looking for more volunteers, either as repairers or to help in the reception and café areas, as we would like to introduce a roster so that volunteers do not feel over-burdened.
The next sessions take place at Malvern Cube on Saturday 15th June and Saturday 13th July. There is no session in August, and the Repair Café doors open again on Saturday 7th September. There is more information at www.facebook.com/ malvernhillsrepaircafe or call (01684) 438539

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

Sling Library Carrying a baby in a sling offers parents the chance to stay close to their child while walking, shopping or getting on with activities around the home. Malvern Sling Library offers parents the chance to try out different slings and gives advice about the best way to use it. Its been started by Caroline Blood who tells us more. The idea for the Sling Library came to me when I had my son three years ago. I was keen to follow attachment parenting style methods which help to form a strong emotional bond with your child, part of which involves using a sling to keep your baby close at all times. Slings are popular in Malvern because of all the hills! Its much less work than pushing a pram or buggy up a steep road. The library has proved popular because it has allowed people to try this way of carrying their baby before spending money to buy a sling. There are many similar libraries across the country and there’s nationwide networks called UK Sling Libraries Network and Babywearing UK, however ours is the only one we know of in Worcestershire. We have twenty five slings of all different types, giving parents a range of choices before perhaps committing to buying one for themselves. A sling keeps a child in an upright position which can help reduce colic, there’s even evidence from users of slings that their babies cry less and sleep better. They are very practical and mean you don’t have to push a buggy around the shops. You can go on long walks with one, you can keep your baby close while still having two free hands to carry out chores or tend to the needs of other children. They also allow your child to see the world from your perspective, you can chat to them and give them eye contact, and keep them close to you while going about your daily life. Our library helps parents to choose what’s right for them. The first sling you try on might not feel comfortable, or appears overwhelmingly complicated to put on. We offer people the chance to try many different kinds so they can find one that suits them. Perhaps they’re not
24
wearing it correctly, and we can help with that. There are safety guidelines for using slings and different ways of wearing it for your comfort, so our advice can really help to make sure both you and your baby are comfortable. We hold regular meetings on the 3rd Thursday of every month between 10.30am and 12:30pm at the Evergreen Children’s Centre so if anybody is interested in trying out slings then please come along. Our meetings started with just a few of us, but we’re now getting as many as twenty people attending. We are a voluntary group and any profits from sling hire go to the Malvern Hills branch of the National Childbirth Trust.

Local Walk
A Walk From Malvern Wells Carl Flint has written three ‘Pictorial Guide’ books to our area. This circular walk is a little over three and a half miles and takes in Holy Well and Eye Well. They offer the walker an insight into the historical legacy of Malvern Water and how it influenced the development of the area. The Eye Well is tiny and easily missed, since it is enclosed in a small brick surround at ground level near the base of a tree. It was refurbished with Lottery Funding in 2008, but its history goes back much further. Historical records show the Eye Well was well known in the 1600’s. A text published in 1622 entitled,. This route also takes in Holy Well which is reputed to be the World’s first water bottling business, starting in 1620. This was Malvern’s most popular spring during the eighteenth century, before the popularity of St Ann’s Well took over during the boom years of the Victorian water cure. The original Schweppes plant was located at Holy Well in the 1850’s before it moved to Colwall. Charles Darwin and Florence Nightingale were recorded as having drunk the waters to improve their health. A simple stainless steel spout provides the flow of Holy

Water into a basin located on the wall of the cottage styled Well House. The bottling building has information boards outlining more of the history and it is possible to view the bottling process as it continues today.

The walk begins from the car park to the St. Wulstan’s Nature Reserve and takes in spectacular views of Little Malvern, Upper Welland and the Severn Valley. It meanders around the hills before crossing the Worcestershire Golf Club as far as the Three Counties Showground before returning to the starting point. Some of the paths can be narrow and quite steep and therefore they are not suitable for buggies. Dog walkers please be aware that there often sheep in the fields around Cotton Cottage and Brickbarns Farms. To download the full details of the walk, please to go our website www.allaboutmalvernhills/Local Life and click the ‘Historic Walks on the Malvern Hills’ window.

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath
David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath
What is it?
Your questions answered: After 22 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.
Topic of the month: Spondylosis
Spondylosis is characterised by episodes of pain and stiffness that mostly occur in the neck (cervical spondylosis) or low back (lumbar spondylosis). It is most commonly seen in the elderly and is a consequence of the ageing process.
What causes it?
Although more common in the older age group spondylosis can be seen in anyone over the age of thirty. The discs that act as shock absorbers between the vertebrae become narrowed due to loss of water content. As well as the disc narrowing, the facet joints of the spine nearly always become involved and show signs of wear and tear. These factors result in reduced mobility and less ability to cope with physical trauma or strain. Frequently spondylosis will cause nerve root irritation leading to pain in the arms or legs as well as in the neck or back. There may even be pins and needles, numbness or weakness.
physical examination. Reduced mobility and excessive muscle guarding are commonly found. Confirmation comes from X-ray or more accurately from MRI scan.
What can be done?
Most cases of spondylosis do not require surgery. Only in cases where there is severe nerve root or spinal cord compression will the surgeon need to intervene. Often carefully moderated hands-on treatment will be very helpful in settling the symptoms. Specific localised soft tissue manipulation, joint articulation, exercises and medical acupuncture are a good combination. Advice on reducing mechanical stress and strain including work station position may also help. Although the underlying problem cannot be cured, careful management is usually the way forward.
Spondylosis vs. Spondylitis
The experienced practitioner will suspect spondylosis just from a
In common usage these terms are interchangeable. However in medical terms this isn’t correct. Spondylosis as described above is essentially a wear and tear problem whereas Spondylitis refers to a group of inflammatory conditions such as Ankylosing Spondylitis.
This clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40. For appointments and enquiries ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

Well-Being
the joy of
Gardening
By Satyavani (Fiona) Robyn from Malvern Here are some of the things we can learn from growing things:
I’ve just come in from weeding our garlic bed. Last year I slotted the purple cloves into the dark earth. Now they are half–way to becoming bulbs of their own, which we will pull up and hang in the shed until we’re ready to fry them with onions until they’re golden and delicious… Gardening is magic. I fell in love with gardening when I was writing my second novel which is about a gardener, Leonard. I interviewed the head gardeners of country estates, read books about gardens and visited gardens around the country. I noticed the love people had for their gardens. I started learning the names of plants and having favourites – peonies, hellebores, monbretia. The gardening bug had got me… Why should we garden? As well as bringing us fresh herbs and vegetables and posies of cornflowers and pink campion, gardening benefits our well–being in many other ways. These include the physical benefits of getting outside and moving around, and the emotional benefits of engaging in something completely different from our everyday chores or work. As we pay attention to the things growing and changing around us, we can put our worries in their proper perspective. To receive these benefits, it isn’t necessary to have three acres or lots of free time or money. All you need is a packet of seeds and a free half hour. You could grow basil on your window–sill or put a bright pot of pansies outside your front door. Maybe a blueberry bush or two, or a raspberry cane. There’s nothing like eating fresh berries in the sunshine… Start small and see if the bug gets you too!
38
1. Slowing down. I try to start my day with a slow stroll through the garden. It steadies me before a frantic day at work and allows me to pay attention to the slow changes that are always happening. This morning, the swan aquilegia is open! 2. Patience. Things go wrong in the garden just like they go wrong anywhere else – slugs, blight, cats trampling all over your new seedlings… It’s okay – take a deep breath and plant them again. You also need patience because plants grow at their own pace – there is no rushing a magnolia tree. But it’s worth the wait… 3. Remembering cycles. Nature reminds us of how everything moves in a cycle – plants retreat in winter so they can gather energy and get ready for a new burst of life in the spring. This is often how it is for us too. 4. Noticing beauty. There is always beauty all around us, but we rarely pause to notice it. If you’ve grown a forget–me–not from seed, you’re even more likely to appreciate its brilliant blue dots. If you’ve mowed the lawn, you’ll really appreciate the neat (ish) edges. Stand in your garden and see how much beauty you can find. Good luck with your growing this year, and if you don’t manage to grow something of your own, do visit some of the lovely parks and gardens we have in our area. Enjoy.

Great Malvern Post Office Refurbishment
a
rts
)
Nigel and Sara Morris have owned and run the Post Office since 1995 and over the years have developed the retail area which more recently has benefitted from the addition of a Thorntons department. As part of this ongoing development the Post Office counter area is due to be refurbished. The existing counter is being replaced with a screenless counter which they hope will provide their customers with a more personal and efficient service. To enable these major works to be undertaken it will be necessary to close at 17.30 on Thursday 30th May and reopen again at 9.00 on Wednesday 5th June. Following the refurbishment they will be extending the post office opening times on a Saturday and will be open from 09.00 till 17.30. The shop offers a fantastic selection of gifts and cards that change regularly so customers can always find something new. Gift items include ranges by Jellycat, Gisela Graham and Thomas Kent clocks. New items arriving each week. In addition they offer a full selection of Thorntons chocolates and also Thorntons famous ice cream with lots of limited edition flavours to tempt you with. They look forward to seeing you soon!

Direct from the West End, Broadway and 25 countries around the globe comes a joyous version of the Alfred Hitchcock classic spy thriller, The 39 Steps, brilliantly and hilariously recreated as the smash hit Olivier Award Winning Best New Comedy.
Good luck!
This blissfully funny show follows the incredible adventures of our handsome hero Richard Hannay, complete with stiff-upper-lip, British gung-ho and pencil moustache as he encounters dastardly murders, double-crossing secret agents, and, of course, devastatingly beautiful women.
