Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About Malvern is distributed to 14,000 homes and businesses in Malvern Aug/Sept Booking Deadline: Wednesday 13 July

Some good news; our magazine is now reaching more people than ever. Starting this month, we’re doubling distribution to 14,000 homes and businesses. So as well as delivering to Great Malvern and Link Top, we’re now going through letter boxes in Malvern Wells, Malvern Link and all of Barnards Green. We’ll become a bi-monthly publication, producing six magazines a year. If you’re a new reader, then welcome along! We really value the feedback of readers, and always welcome ideas for articles, so if there’s someone you know who’s worthy of a mention then please get in touch. It could be absolutely anybody, we place the community at the heart of what we do, and champion the local groups and projects who might struggle to receive coverage elsewhere. Of course our other primary aim is to promote local businesses and the ethic of ‘shop local’ so if you’re a trader big or small then perhaps we can give you some help.

Civic Week Sat 25th June - Sat 2nd July

Katharine Barber, vice-chair of the Society says its an ambitious undertaking as in other parts of the country similar events take place only over one or two days. ‘We had meetings about this in February and various local groups came up with ideas. When we put it all together we realised how much we had to offer’. The Society was set up following a meeting at the Mount Pleasant Hotel in December 1958. It began life as ‘The Friends of Malvern’ before evolving into the society we see today. Their aim is to ‘conserve and protect the best elements of Malvern’s heritage in the built and natural environment’, no mean feat in an area with so many historic buildings, many of them highly individual. The events include walks taking in different tales and eras of the town’s history. There’s a chance to climb to the top of the tower of the Priory and many of the town’s churches will be open to explore. There’s also music at the Great Malvern hotel and ‘Love in the Pleasure Gardens’, music from Lady Georgianna, who describe themselves as an ‘18th Century Girlband’. Meanwhile the District Council is opening its building on Avenue Road, an historic building in its own right. The Theatre will be displaying an archive of some of its history, and the Morgan Car Visitor Centre will be open for visitors to find out more about the company’s history and continuing development of sports cars today. One of the week’s highlights has to be a live demonstation of water cure taking place at the Coach House Theatre. Local historian Cora Weaver will show exactly what victorian visitors to Malvern put themselves through in the pursuit of improving their health. ‘If you’ve not seen it before you really should go’ says Catherine, ‘ Cora demonstrates it brilliantly using wet sheets and a bath of water. She’s still looking for a willing victim if anybody is interested!’ Jim Handley, a lecturer from the University of the Third Age (U3A) will be leading a walk around the town pointing out some of the geological highlights

This could be the month when you learn something new about the history of Great Malvern. The Civic Society is holding its first ever Civic Week, an ambitious undertaking which aims to throw open the doors to historic properties as well as offer the chance to attend talks, walks and musical entertainment organised by people with a knowledge and a passion for our local area.

Lady Georgianna will provide music and oddities contained in the stones used to build some of Malvern’s grand residences and other buildings, which ties in with Geofest taking place around Malvern at the same time (there’s more elsewhere in this edition of the magazine). ‘Our week runs alongside other events already arranged for residents and visitors to the area, such as the Craft Market, shows at the Theatre, the Morgan Visitor Centre and Malvern Museum’ says Katharine. ’Our hope is that Civic Week will enhance these and show you the great variety of activities on our doorstep’. For more information you can visit the Civic Society’s website www.malverncivicsociety.org.uk, pop into to the Tourist Information Centre on Church Street or telephone 01684 892289 Please note dates and timings are subject to change so please check details with them before setting out. Abbey Hotel will get a ‘Blue Plaque’

SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS

St Leonard’s Church, Newland, is open at several times throughout Civic week and is hosting a concert of Regency music by Lady Georgianna, an ‘18th century girl-band’. Blue Plaques Malvern’s association with well known literary, scientific and political figures is celebrated once again during civic week with the unveiling of two blue plaques. The first, on Saturday 25th June, will be placed on the Abbey Hotel to commemorate the stay of the former Emporer of Ethiopia, Hailie Selassie, who first stayed in Malvern after fleeing an Italian invasion of his country in 1936. Although he later moved into more permanent accomodation near Bath, people remember him taking part in local functions, and one of his grandaughters attended a local school. A week later, on Saturday 2nd July, a blue plaque is unveiled on Back Lane commemorating Sir John Cockcroft, a prominent scientist who was jointly awarded The Nobel Prize for Physics in 1951, for his ‘pioneer work on the transmutation of atomic nuclei by artificially accelerated atomic particles’. His research work led to the development of nuclear power today, but during the second world war he worked on the development of radar that was taking place in Malvern at the time. Such was the importance of his work, he received honorary doctorates from nineteen universities and many other honours and awards were bestowed upon him during his lifetime.

St Leonard’s Church The church, which forms part of the Beauchamp Community on the edge of Malvern, is victorian, and was built in the early french gothic style. It’s dedicated to Saint Leonard, the patron saint of prisoners and is decorated throughout with an incredible array of murals depicting biblical stories. The style is known as ‘Gambier Parry’ named after an English painter who developed this kind of fresco painting. The flamboyant decoration isn’t confined to the walls. The floors are covered with encaustic tiles that were produced by a company in Herefordshire, there’s gilt decoration across the rafters, and some stunning examples of stained glass in the windows. Although the church is victorian, the ancient font standing at the back gives a clue as to the much older building that once stood on the site. The lighting in the church was renewed two years ago and now allows visitors a much clearer view of the highly decorative interior. Great Malvern Station

The Worm Sitting at one end of Platform Two at Great Malvern station are locked doors that form the entrance to ‘The Worm’. The Civic Society is using Civic Week to highlight this tunnel as one of the town’s important, but neglected historic structures. The tunnel, clad in corrugated iron, can be viewed by standing on the railway bridge on Avenue Road, and was used to move luggage from arriving trains to the Imperial Hotel next door, which today is the home of Malvern St. James school. The Civic Society is keen to find a new use for the tunnel and would like to hear from anybody who might have an idea that would help secure the tunnel’s long term future. During the week the Cotswold Line Promotion Group will be holding a display at the station celebrating 150 years of the railway in Malvern, which will include more information about the history and current state of ‘The Worm’.

Teenage Reading ‘Reading books is still important to teenagers!’ says local teacher Rachel Tobin. Have you got a library card? Do you regularly visit the library yourself or with your children? In this high-tech world it is easy to overlook the wonders of something as simple as a book. There is something magical like an Aladdin’s cave in entering a library, choosing lots of books, reading the papers and magazines and sifting through leaflets and events brochures, all costing you nothing. I love choosing books, particularly gardening books, a good fiction story and holiday books (hint for my husband; Norway would be nice!). However I enjoy just as much the children’s section and choosing books with my children Tom and Kate. I adore the beautiful illustrations in many of the younger children’s books, the brilliant use of a few words to create an interesting story. Have you ever sat down and tried to write a young children’s book? I have many times, and so far I’ve failed. I truly admire anyone with this skill. Then there is the sheer indulgence of taking out lots of books at a library and deciding at home which ones we like best and still want to read. We need to encourage children to become discerning. If they start a book and don’t like it, remind them it is okay to put it down and choose another. Developing a love of reading does not mean we have to like every book we pick up and plough through it even if we don’t like it. Encouraging young children to read confidently needs to involve all family members; parents, grandparents and brothers or sisters. This is a special time for children which focuses on only them and

By Rachel Tobin

they love it! In schools it is an unfortunate fact that children can often only read for very limited times to staff and teachers. Therefore daily help at home, even just ten minutes a day, is crucial for a child to become a fluent and enthusiastic reader. Learner readers are a bit like learner drivers. They need help advice and support from people with experience, until gradually they are skilled and confident enough to go it alone. Make sure they have good reading role models in your family and be enthusiastic about reading; don’t live in a house without books! Often children moving up from primary to secondary school stop reading, or read a lot less as a leisure activity. Increased homework is used by many teenagers as an excuse not to read anything outside of the National Curriculum. It is a sad fact that a high percentage of secondary students never pick up a fiction book and when asked why they don’t read, will say they read on a computer. While this is fine, it is not encouraging any depth of reading and doesn’t help concentration skills or imagination. So as parents we need to be more inventive with teenagers. If they are still weak readers, then they still need to read to us to improve their English. Libraries now cater well for teenagers. Pop down to your library and check out their teenage section, try lots and lots of different writers until one finally catches their imagination. Make time for reading, expose yourself to reading, enjoy and relax!

Introducing Rachel I am a qualified teacher, presently working on the one-to-one Mathematics and English programmes in a local secondary school. I also run the Kumon Mathematics and English centre at St Andrews’ Church Hall centre in Malvern. As a Kumon Instructor for over 14 years I have seen first hand the importance of parental involvement in children’s learning. Working in partnership with both parents and children is an incredibly rewarding and exhilarating experience. I have a BA Honours degree and worked in business management for many years before gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and entering the world of teaching. The Courtyard

Shopping Experience

Just a few weeks since they opened, businesses in The Courtyard say they’re receiving a really positive response from visitors to the new shopping area in the heart of the town centre. The idea to convert part of the extensive property into a cosy courtyard came from Adrian Ward, who for many years has run Robson Ward, a successful furniture business at the premises on Belle Vue Terrace. The shops add something unique to the town centre as well as offering a useful place to buy gifts and fashion accessories. Among the traders is Nik Nak Noo, which describes itself as a ‘gorgeous gift shop’ offering affordable presents that are tailored to suit everyone’s needs. If you can’t make it into town, the owner Vicky also sells her products online and will deliver for free to any address within the WR14 postcode area; the website address and product examples are in the advert on the next page. The next step for The Courtyard is the opening of a cafe. They now have planning permission and are keen to hear from anybody who’s interested in running it. For other businesses, there is still some space available to open for business within the complex. Over coming weeks, look out for all kinds of different events, including food demonstrations, face painting and fashion shows. You can visit The Courtyard between 10am and 5pm from Monday to Saturday or contact them direct (details on page 12). The many local fans of Zinnia’s fabulously comfortable, brightly coloured suede and leather footwear will be pleased to hear that the launch of The Zinnia Shoe Boutique in Malvern’s Courtyard Shopping Experience on Belle Vue Terrace has met with tremendous success. ‘As a small family-run business, it was a big extra commitment,’ says co-director Victoria El-Bay, ‘but we love being part of the Courtyard and we’re delighted with the response we’ve received’.

Sunshine By Allison Maxwell from Colwall Vitamin D is sometimes referred to as the sunshine vitamin. Light hitting the skin from the sun’s rays stimulates the production of this vitamin and hormone. This is great news for those people living in countries with warm climates and clear skies. But for those of us in colder, cloudier climates, we rely on a sufficient intake from the foods we eat. This could explain why Native Inuit people in Alaska eat so much fish; a compensation for the lack of available daylight during much of the year. We all know that too much sun can be dangerous, as it brings an increased risk of skin cancer. But do the lengths we go to protect ourselves from this actually take their toll on our health in other ways?

Why is vitamin D important?

It is widely accepted that vitamin D is important for bone health but new research has suggested that a deficiency of vitamin D could play a part in a wide-range of diseases from multiple sclerosis to rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes as well as some cancers and even dementia. Many of these diseases are more common in the northern hemisphere than in sunnier climates. For instance, Scotland has one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, whereas the disease is virtually unknown in Africa. However I should stress that any link remains unproven and more research is needed.

Getting Vitamin D

Most vitamin D is synthesised in the body by the absorption of sunlight. Because we spend such little time with our bodies exposed to the sun, research suggests that up to 85% of people could be deficient in vitamin D without ever knowing it. The Food

Nature’s elixir or a health risk? Standards Agency says a healthy diet plus ‘a little’ exposure to sun should give us all the vitamin D we need. Around 15 minutes of sunlight daily is enough for most people. The further north of the equator you live, the harder it is to get this opportunity and if you work indoors its even harder. You can’t cram all of your sun exposure into a two or three week holiday and expect to experience the benefits, in any case its safer not to try! Frequent, short bursts are best.

Ensuring adequate intake of vitamin D

Relatively few foods naturally contain vitamin D, the most abundant being oily fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel or cod liver oil. Because of limited natural sources, foods such as milk and breakfast cereals are fortified with Vitamin D. Many scientists now believe we need 1,000 IU per day of vitamin D (IU = international units, a measure of vitamin potency) to avoid deficiency. For reference, a salmon serving contains about 360 IU, a glass of fortified milk about 100 IU and a tablespoon of cod liver oil 1300+ IU. In comparison, full-body sunbathing for a short period of time that will produce 10,000-20,000 IU of vitamin D, the equivalent of 100 to 200 glasses of fortified milk. Remember however that no vitamin D will be generated in short-daylight months above certain latitudes. In these periods it could be sensible to consume a supplement. The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition are currently reviewing the Dietary Reference Values for vitamin D intake and will be making recommendations later this year.

Allison Maxwell has an MSc in Public Health Nutrition, a BSc in Nutrition & Food Science and 20 years experience in the field of food and nutrition. If you need advice ring 07771694490 for Private Nutritional Consultations.

Aches and Pains Treatment Clinic at Prospect View Medical Centre Ask the Osteopath

David V Jones BSc(Hons) DO Registered Osteopath

Your questions answered: After 20 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

The sacro-iliac joint

The base of the spine (sacrum) is connected on each side to the pelvis by a medium sized L shaped joint called the sacro-iliac joint (SI). These joints do not move anything like as much as a knee or hip. In fact they barely move at all. They are held together with hugely strong ligaments and are responsible for transmitting the weight of the upper body through to the legs. During childbirth an increased level of a hormone called relaxin softens the ligaments and allows much more sacro-iliac movement so that the baby’s head may pass more easily.

What can go wrong with it?

Certain rheumatological diseases such as Ankylosing Spondylitis and Reiter’s Syndrome can cause inflammation of the SI joints. Injuries such as falling heavily onto a buttock can overstrain the joints and childbirth may over stretch the joints. I once saw a man who had had an incredibly lucky escape. He had been pinned to a wall by a steel rod being carried on a fork lift truck. He escaped death by inches but his whole pelvis had been distorted with significant sacro-iliac damage. The new clinic is privately run at Prospect View by David Jones DO. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.

Prospect View Medical Centre 300 Pickersleigh Rd Malvern WR14 2GP www.themalvernosteopath.co.uk

How is a diagnosis made?

With difficulty is the simple answer. There are numerous tests but these are thought to be unreliable. Often it is a process of elimination. Hip pain and lumbar spine pain can be similar to sacro-iliac pain and thus need eliminating first.

What treatment is available?

Sacro-iliac joints can be manipulated and I often use medical acupuncture deep into the soft tissues overlying the joint. Support belts are available for unstable SI joints. More difficult cases can be injected with steroid but this should be a last resort as it can lead to more long term side effects.

Interesting trivia

In the Disney film “The Jungle Book”, Kaa the python is heard to utter “Ooo my sacro-iliac” as he is pushed out of a tree. In reality snakes do not have sacro-iliacs. Their lack of legs means a pelvis is unnecessary. Treatments cost £35 per session. For an appointment or informal chat ring on 01684 573989 or 07732 157772. No ache too trivial. No pain too severe.

All About... ...Geofest The geological diversity of Malvern and the wider area is celebrated in June with ‘Geofest’; a month long festival encompassing many different walks and events. Its organised by the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Earth Heritage Trust, and Natalie Watkins tells us more.

W hat is Geofest? Its a chance for us to highlight and

promote the amazing variety of our local geological history through a series of events and activities. This is the 2nd year that GeoFest has been running and we hope it will be as much fun this year as the last time around.

What’s the best thing about the festival?

Of course at the same time they are able to go into greater detail for any amateur or professional geologists who choose to come along.

Can you outline some of the highlights this year?

I think its the great variety of events; there should be something to suit all tastes. Some of the walks and quarry visits will take you to places that aren’t often visited; even if you live close by you might not even be aware of their existence. The people guiding the walks are very knowledgeable and this is an informal opportunity to learn much more about the amazing area in which we live. The festival isn’t focussed solely on geology and landscape; there are also events exploring the biodiversity and history of the area. We’ve included several activities aimed specifically at families.

Is there something in the festival for non-geologists?

All events are aimed at the non-geologists, so don’t worry, no specialised knowledge is required! Its just a chance to get out and enjoy yourself, the walks themselves follow some lovely routes. The guides are well used to delivering geology and landscape interpretation at a level understandable by the non-geologists.

30

There’s so much going on I can only offer a flavour of some of the events here. We have guided walks through the hills around Alfrick and Suckley, followed a week later by a guided Walk exploring the geology and landscape around Tank Quarry in North Malvern. For those who prefer their geology from the comfort of a chair, we have a talk on 28th June called ‘Volcanoes, Earthquakes and Tsunamis’, when Dr Paul Olver will explain more about how the earth moves. The Rock and Fossil Roadshow rolls into Malvern on Saturday 2nd July, when parents & children can make their own fossil, try their hand at a bit of dinosaur detective work and enjoy many more fun activities. The festival continues in July with more guided walks around Ledbury, Colwall, Mathon & West Malvern.

Digging for fossils at a Rock and Fossil Roadshow

where can people get more information?

GeoFest leaflets can be picked up from libraries, local tourist information centres and from many other tourist attractions throughout the wider area. There’s a comprehensive listing of events on our website, which you can find at www. EarthHeritageTrust.org Exploring the geology and industrial archaeology on a guided walk through the Wyre Forest coalfield. Former Hunthouse Colliery.
