But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Malvern Wells, Welland
& Madresfield areas and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

means they have managed to bring a personal touch to many garments which is appreciated by parents. ‘When I first moved to the Malvern area in 2010 I was a little surprised at the lack of choice and options available when buying school uniform’ says Lee Smith, one of the founding partners of the business. ‘We have made it our mission to try and give all parents that little bit of extra choice when having to purchase for their children. We sell all the major schoolwear brands such as TRUTEX, BLUE MAX BANNER, and DAVID LUKE to name but a few.’ Lee adds that schools are told by the Department for Education to allow parents to use and purchase from two or three different shops when buying school uniform, which has really helped the business to gain momentum. So much so, the company now supplies a number of schools from as far afield as Scotland right down to the southern coast of England on a regular basis.

Well Being
walk a mile
By Kaspa Thompson The cat, Tsuki, was sitting at the top of a few low steps. She - like all my cats - hates walking on grass. She stretched out in my direction when she saw me looking at her, and started that purr which means come over here and stroke me. I gave her some fuss and then carried on my walk, noticing what was growing, which flower beds needed weeding and the places where I was sure I had planted things that hadn’t come up yet. I noticed a couple of tadpoles swimming up to the surface of our small pond. Recently they have been keeping out of sight down in the deep waters. I have watched them change from gelatinous frog spawn, to tiny tadpoles, to bigger ones and I hope that some of them make it to adulthood. It’s hard to imagine how all of these different creatures experience the world; impossible, perhaps. Naturalist Charles Foster tried to see through the eyes of animals by living in their world. To get closer to the experience of a badger he got right down to the forest floor, he dug a set to sleep in and emerged blindfolded, learning to navigate the world through scent and touch. Even then there is a gap: a badger brain is not a human brain. Sometimes it seems just as difficult to imagine how life is for other people, even though we are all animals of the same species. We are all born into particular families, into particular cultures and into particular countries, each with their own quirks and standards of normal behaviour. Some of what we are handed down is good and some of what we are handed down less so. We meet someone with different experiences to us and think, “How can they like that?” or “Why are they doing that?”. A gulf opens up between us. Misunderstandings can happen even in the most intimate of relationships. We fail to notice how important something is to our partner, or we each

This morning as I took my usual morning walk around the garden I heard a bird call that I didn’t recognise. I looked up and there was a female blackbird, with its mottled brown coat, sitting up high in the copper beech above me. It wasn’t singing the usual blackbird song. A warning call, I guessed, and turned around to see that one of my cats had followed me into the garden. happen to be prioritising different things and suddenly we are arguing or not speaking to each other at all. Human beings don’t tend to like real change and so when we come into conflict much of our response is often about trying to get out of the conflict whilst avoiding changing or doing anything differently: we tell each other off, or try to use rational thought to work things out, or we run to a distraction. Suddenly there is a real danger of the conflict escalating and things being worse for us and the other person. Empathy offers a way out of this situation. It’s amazing how really tuning in to what’s happening in the other person, and to what’s happening in us, can make a real difference. Can we name our own feelings, rather than just acting habitually? Can we tune into the feelings of the other person? What is it about them that we’ve not seen or heard that has got us into this mess? Is there something about our own experience we are missing out? We’ll never get 100% into someone else’s shoes. But really making an effort to get there, and to hear and see and feel more than we did before is an amazingly powerful and transformative practice. Empathy moves us towards understanding, reconnection and to working and living together more easily.

Orchard Lodge Clinic Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern
David Jones Heather Else Stuart Wilson Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us
Topic of the month: Tennis Elbow What is it?
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is characterized by pain on the outer side of the elbow (as viewed with palm facing forward). In the past it has been known by various quaint names such as “washer womens’ elbow” and ”lawn tennis arm” although these terms carry too many class distinctions to be used in the modern world! Pain on the inner side of the elbow is called golfer’s elbow.
The causes
Overuse is the main cause but not just from racquet sports. Any action using the arm whilst gripping with the hand will put strain on the muscle attachment points at the elbow and can set the problem off. It is particularly common amongst builders and carpenters who often use hand tools all day.
What has gone wrong?
Any medical term with “itis” on the end suggests inflammation. For many years, lateral epiconylitis was indeed thought to be chronic inflammation around the muscle attachments of the elbow. There isn’t good evidence for this on laboratory investigation and it is
now thought to be a different process known as tendinopathy in which the tendon thickens and grows extra blood vessels.
What can be done?
Medically pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are the opening gambit. Steroid injections are often used although this can lead to tissue damage. In extreme cases surgery is used to move the attachment point of the muscle to reduce muscle pull.
Our approach
Firstly proper diagnosis has to be considered. Sometimes a neck problem will produce similar symptoms so a full history and careful examination is important. As ever prevention is better than cure, so it is important to reduce the causative factors where possible. When this can’t be done a tennis elbow strap may be helpful. This is worn below the elbow and reduces the amount of shock and strain that reaches the muscle attachments. Hands on work to the forearm muscles and dry needling (a type of acupuncture) are commonly used in the world of physical medicine. Stretching and other specific exercises are also likely to help.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

a helping hand Do you need help to sort out a few odd jobs around the home? As you get older, maintaining your independence can sometimes be a challenge, which is why the Helping Hands scheme has started in Malvern. Run by Community Action Malvern and District, volunteers help with simple tasks around the home or garden for a fee of between £8 and £10 an hour. The idea for the new service came in response to questions asked by people using Community Action’s transport services. ‘When taking people out, they often mention problems around the home they need to sort out’ says Jacci Phillips, the charity’s Chief Officer. ‘It can be as simple as changing a lightbulb, an item that somebody might struggle to sort out by themselves.’ The service includes tasks like shopping, light housework and gardening, or it might be help dealing with phone calls and letters. ‘After last winter’s storms we helped one householder sort out a fence panel which had blown over’ says Jacci, ‘and we also helped one lady to choose a new car. Do get in touch if you’d like to find out more, you can speak with Yvonne on (01684) 892381.’ The charity sees itself as ‘A lifeline to the outside world’ for people in the Malvern area who find themselves isolated, whether from advancing years, illness, or disability. This year marks the charity’s 45th anniversary. Originally known as The Council of Community Service, it has grown and evolved over the years. Today it runs a small fleet of minibuses, two cars adapted to carry wheelchairs, and a team of volunteer drivers. The Community Bus service links rural communities around south Worcestershire and the Hills and is maintained by a network of not-for-profit operators and volunteers. ‘We take people to medical appointments, or to the shops, or to visit friends and relatives’ says Jacci. ‘These are journeys they couldn’t otherwise make. One volunteer took a person to the dentist
22
– he then revealed it was the first time he’d been out for three years.’ To tackle this kind of social isolation, the charity recently launched its ‘Stuck In? Get Out!’ campaign, to encourage more people to use its services. Today, it regularly helps around 1,500 people with services like Shop Around, taking people on trips to places like Pershore or Ledbury. ‘It’s not only the chance to do some shopping, it’s also a social occasion’ says Jacci. ‘Our Sunday Tea Club started after we realised that many of those we help might not see anybody for an entire weekend. We now take them out for afternoon tea which is laid on by local churches and groups like the Brownies.’
Community Action Malvern and District always welcomes new volunteers - if you have a few hours to spare and can help with any of their services then please call (01684) 892381 or visit www.communityaction.org.uk

All About...
Malvern male voice choir A special celebration concert on Saturday 10th June marks the 95th anniversary of the Malvern Male Voice Choir. This gala event takes place at the choir’s rehearsal home, Holy Trinity Church at Link Top. Steve Smart tells us more.
What do we know about the choir’s origins? MMVC started as a male voice quartet in 1922 and quickly grew to become what was known then as the Malvern Wells Male Voice Choir. The Choir has continued without a break, although it was difficult during World War Two - American servicemen stationed in Malvern helped out. In the past the Choir competed in national music festivals, but nowadays concentrates on giving concerts both large and small as well as singing at weddings and other special occasions.
How many members do you have? The Choir numbers about thirty and always welcomes new recruits. Our large repertoire covers the whole range of choral music from classical and church music to folk song, songs from the popular musicals and modern pop classics like the Beatles. Male singers of all ages are welcome. If like me, you don’t read music and have never sung in a choir since schooldays, you’ll still fit in perfectly because of the goodhumoured and expert guidance of our popular musical director Charles Pavey.
Tell us about some of the choir’s highlights from recent years There have been many, but among them is performing for the BBC with the Hereford and Worcester Male Voice Choirs. Some of our performances at Malvern Priory include one with the Powick Community Choir and also with the Spirit of Hope Gospel Choir from Zurich. We had a memorable concert last summer to a massive audience at the Three Counties Showground. This was for the National Festival of Lanterns of the Camping & Caravanning Club, with a rousing flag-waving finale in ‘Last Night of the Proms’ style, accompanied by the Club’s national brass band. On a smaller scale, but no less memorable, was helping celebrate a fine wedding at the beautiful Pershore Abbey.
26
How can potential members get involved? The Choir would love to hear from any interested potential singers; you can contact John Button, Membership Secretary on (01684) 569018, Charles Pavey on (01684) 893590 or Steve Smart on (01684) 560618. You are welcome to just come along without commitment any time to sit in on one of our regular rehearsals on Monday nights at Holy Trinity, Link Top between 7.30 and 9.30 pm. (The Choir is having its summer break from 10 July to 4 September) And remember, there are always a few laughs to be had amongst the singing.
For more details of recent and forthcoming concerts and the choir’s music you can visit the MMVC website at www.malvernmalevoicechoir.org and you can also contact us on Facebook. The celebration concert to mark the 95th anniversary of Malvern Male Voice Choir takes place at Holy Trinity Church, Link Top at 7.30pm on Saturday 10th June. For tickets in advance please call (01684) 561126.

Health
heartstart malvern Almost 40 people will suffer a cardiac arrest in Malvern this year. Sadly, less than a handful of these people will survive. A cardiac arrest is where your heart stops beating and is usually caused by a problem with the electrical activity in your heart. In many cases, the heart could be restarted by an electric shock from a defibrillator. Your chance of surviving a cardiac arrest will be significantly increased if someone can perform simple resuscitation skills and can use a defibrillator as soon as possible after your heart has stopped beating. Although Heartstart Malvern has already provided free training to over 600 people and placed several defibrillators around Malvern this year, they would like more people trained and to support their appeal to help install 50 defibrillators locally. Heartstart Malvern’s trainers can teach anyone over 11 years of age how to undertake basic resuscitation techniques, including how to use a defibrillator, in less than two hours. Although these are extremely easy skills to learn, they could help save a life.

Information about Heartstart Malvern can be found at www.heartstartmalvern.org.uk or by calling 01684 342999. Heart Attacks A heart attack is where the blood supply to the heart is blocked. It can result in a cardiac arrest if it is not treated quickly. Being able to recognise a heart attack could prevent a cardiac arrest and save a life. The most common signs of a heart attack are chest pain which may spread to the neck, back and arms, sweating, feeling weak or light headed, breathlessness and feeling nauseous. Not everyone having a heart attack will experience all of these symptoms. If you think someone is having a heart attack call 999 immediately. Do not delay calling 999, as any delay in treatment could be fatal.

Theatre News FIRST MAJOR REVIVAL CELEBRATING THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF Willy Russell’s
shirley valentine Willy Russell’s heart-warming comedy Shirley Valentine premiered in 1986 and took the world by storm. In celebration of its 30th Anniversary the first major revival of this national treasure will embark on a UK tour starring much loved actress Jodie Prenger as Shirley. Jodie Prenger is perhaps best known for winning the role of Nancy in the West End production of Oliver! through the BBC television series I’d Do Anything. Most recently Jodie toured the UK in the classic musical Tell Me On A Sunday. She also played the title role in the national tour of the musical Calamity Jane and has starred in One Man, Two Guvnors both in the West End and on tour and as Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. Jodie is also a regular presenter on BBC Radio 2 Shirley is a Liverpool housewife. Her kids have left home and she makes chips and egg for her husband while talking to the wall. Where has her life disappeared to? Out of the blue, her best friend offers her a trip to Greece for 2 weeks and she secretly packs her bags. She heads for the sun and starts to see the world and herself very differently. Shirley Valentine will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th July. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
