J’HABITE - MALVERN MADE Patrick Phipps is a man on a mission. Backed by his 20 years of established supplier relationships, furniture know-how and community intel, he has created the perfect alternative to the large, faceless, sometimes service-less high street furniture stores now available. J’Habite, Malvern, opened its doors in 2016. Since then, under Patrick’s ownership and management, the store has grown to offer a range of oak and pine furniture and giftware and has achieved 20% growth in just 13 months. Why is that? Novelty or a more meaningful, longterm reason? Patrick believes the store’s success is as much about offering an experience as it is about the product itself: “It may sound clichéd but people are looking for the personal touch. Yes, you can buy online with J’Habite but you can just as easily pop into the store to see the item, take advantage of our store to door delivery at no extra cost and even have it assembled in your home by our team. Choice, service and the personal touch. From a local store that is there to care.” Traditional values. Pure and simple. And yet no one at J’Habite is sitting back on their laurels.

8

Patrick has big plans afoot including the potential of another branch in the Worcestershire area. “Our furniture ranges are very popular,” explains Patrick. “I think we provide something a little different to the mainstream stores and people appreciate that. And we will, of course, be adding to our ranges in the coming months to ensure variety.” And what of the people who have already bought from you? “We will of course continue to stock the more popular ranges. We recognise that every purchase is an investment and often the start of a longer-term plan to add to it over time. And we’ll ensure that can happen.” “I always appreciate the care and attention people give to selecting furniture from us. If you’re buying something for your home, you have to love it. The Malvern community is wonderfully supportive and we serve them in the same way.” J’Habite appears to have it all. Quality products, expertise and service. A rare gem of a store that is truly befitting of Malvern.

Business News FRAN DOIDGE WELLBEING COACH The route to true wellbeing is a sound mind as well as a sound body, according to Fran Doidge. After working for almost three decades as a therapist, Fran uses a combination of coaching together with massage and other physical therapies to help her clients. ‘Aches and pains will have a bearing on wellbeing’ she says, ‘while at the same time the body reflects mental and emotional stress. The two need to be treated together.’ Fran uses a number of techniques for coaching and helps clients find their own coping strategies to take away and practise in their own time. She helps many people deal with chronic pain and with conditions such as Fibromyalgia. ‘When you are dealing with stress or difficult emotional problems, you might be in denial, or unable to tackle it by yourselves’ she says. ‘I help people face up to issues in a gentle, caring way, with my therapies acting as a catalyst to help them on the road to a healthy life. It’s a drop of calm in the ocean of emotion.’ You can read more about Fran at www.coachingforwellbeing.co.uk

MALVERN TALKING NEWSPAPER Malvern Talking Newspaper has a new co-ordinator. Anne Dicks is taking over from Norma Pottinger, who ran it together with her late husband Stan for almost twenty years. ‘Norma did such good work’ says Anne. ‘She introduced the format we use today, with seven teams of volunteers taking it turns to record each week. Norma is continuing as a volunteer reader with this dedicated group which has contributed so much time and expertise to enriching the lives of local blind and visually impaired people.’ Every Friday, a team meets at Lansdowne Church to record a new audio edition. This is saved onto memory sticks which are posted to around 80 recipients who listen to it on a computer or a playback machine. ‘Although technology these days allows for web pages to be converted to audio, our service is still popular’ continues Anne. ‘We offer a familiar voice which is like a friend to our listeners, who won’t need to rely on a relative or neighbour to read the paper out to them.’. The service is completely free and is funded by the charity Sight Concern. There will be a lunch at the end of November to celebrate Norma Pottinger’s work and the 20th anniversary of the new system but in the meantime Malvern Talking Newspaper always welcomes new volunteers. You can find out more at www.malverntalkingnews.org

PUBLIC DEBATE You are invited to the Lansdowne Public Discussion and Debate: “How Can We Make Malvern Safer?” There is debate now on the effect of reduced police numbers on crime rates across the country. A panel of local police community safety officers and community representatives will address these issues and discuss questions and ideas with the audience. The independent chairperson will be Jenny Jones, Partner (Barrister), Head of Employment at Harrison Clark Rickerbys law firm. Saturday 21st October 2017 7.45pm to 9.30pm. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Malvern Wells, Welland

malvern dementia action alliance There are 850,000 people living with dementia across the UK. This will rise to a million people in the next eight years and reach two million by the year 2051. As well as the challenges facing these many people, the financial costs are huge. It’s already estimated to cost the UK economy £26.3 billion every year and with stretched services, society risks failing whose people living with dementia as well as their carers. For this reason, the Dementia Action Alliance has been formed to bring organisations together at a national and local level, with a commitment to transforming outcomes from people affected by dementia.

The courses of about an hour are open to local businesses and community groups. They are also supporting other initiatives in the Malvern area which include a Dementia Café, Singing for the Brain sessions and an advice service. ‘We have many local partners who are already involved’ says Mark, ‘but it’s up to all of us to make a difference.’

Launched three years ago, the Malvern Dementia Action Alliance is made up of organisations across the area, working together to improve the lives of people living with dementia. Another aim is to make Malvern a dementia-friendly town, which in practice can mean many things. ‘Our aim is to

We don’t do the short calls others do, and there is always time for our carers to give companionship to their clients as part of the call. Our Caregivers go back to the same clients time and again, getting to know them as friends. We don’t ask our Caregivers to wear uniform because when they take clients out and about it is much nicer to be seen with someone who could be a friend or relative. We have excellent initial training programmes, and will add to your skills with courses such as our City and Guilds in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and QCF (NVQ) Level 2 & 3 in Social Care if you choose. We offer industry leading rates of pay, starting at well over £10 per hour, including guaranteed holiday pay and we offer hours to suit your lifestyle. Some of our Caregivers have just one or two clients in their own local area, while others work on a full-time basis. Because we like you to be able to take clients out and about you do need access to a car.

Christmas

let there be light! By Jane Knowles, from Just So

I am writing this piece the day after I have visited the ‘Autumn Fair’ gift buying extravaganza at the NEC in Birmingham. It is one of the trade shows where the independent and multiple retailers will go to source the gifts they are going to stock in their shops this Christmas time. ou can buy anything from a large chaise longue in leopard print velvet to the smallest most delicate earrings in the shape of a humming bird and everything inbetween.

y

Each retailer is on the search for an insight into the current design trends and insider information as to what is going to be particularly ‘hot’ this season.

The giving of a well chosen gift and the sending of a card can again bring a little light and happiness to those we care about and love. A smile and a friendly hello you receive as you enter the shop can do the same, and it’s free. So, good luck as we all try to spread a little light and warmth in the lead up to Christmas this year.

Interior decoration-wise, anything that creates a warming glow and sheds a pool of light is important. Shiny, reflective and burnished surfaces all create that lovely cosy feeling we desire in the colder winter nights. So I have chosen burnished metal tea-light holders and filigree cut lanterns with leaves and natural shapes. Linen table lamps which are simple tubes but have pretty patterns etched on the surface that lets the light shine through. Baby night lights in the shape of stars, moons and fairy castles. The light shedding trend continues into Christmas decorations this year. I have chosen baubles; stars and angels which are decorated with mini battery powered led lights so that they sparkle softly and do not require mains power, so can be hung in unusual places or displayed in glass bowls or amongst greenery on a mantelpiece. Hand decorated teal, deep russet red, pink and gold tree decorations again reflect and shine the light back into the room. Natural shapes such as birds, flowers and pine cones look lovely.

All About...

Malvern Hills No Interest Loan Scheme Malvern Hills NILS is a new organisation offering interest free loans to people in receipt of benefits or on low income, who live in the Malvern Hills District Council area. The organisation aims to help people avoid taking high interest loans that add to their cycle of poor credit and unaffordable repayments. Richard Isaacs is the charity’s Chair of Trustees and tells us more.

Tell us more about your work Often when a family or individual with little or no savings needs to spend money unexpectedly, they might go to an unregistered, unregulated loan provider. We offer an alternative, with loans up to a maximum of £250 for essential items such as white goods, school uniforms, travel passes, medical appliances and shoes. We do not offer cash loans but purchase the item(s) on behalf of the applicant and arrange a realistic payment schedule reflecting personal circumstances and the level of the loan. Repayments are generally within 12 months. Whenever possible we use local suppliers, many of whom us give preferential prices. Our clients undergo an assessment process to ensure that repayments are affordable and that we are not contributing to any potential debt issues. The project is administered by two volunteers who are based in the Citizens Advice offices in Malvern. Funding to establish the charity was provided by Malvern Hills District Council and Fortis Living and we rely on donations and funding applications for our current activities.

Why did you set this up? The scheme is based on a similar one that has been running in Tenbury for a number of years. It was recognised that when essential items are required, there are little or no savings and credit records are poor, people may resort to unregistered, unregulated lenders who charge high interest rates and require immediate repayments. Our loans are structured to reflect realistic, affordable payments and, if necessary,

28

our administrators will keep in touch with clients should problems arise.

What kinds of people do you help? As an example, we recently helped a single mum with a three year old daughter to buy an urgently needed washing machine with a £250 loan which will be repaid by standing order over the next 12 months. In another case a school uniform was required for one of three children in the family and a £90 loan, repayable over 6 months, purchased the necessary items. In both cases the single parents were in receipt of benefits and had no savings or family support to fall back on. To get in touch with the Malvern Hills No Interest Loan Scheme, you can call 07783 899519 - please leave a message and they will call you back, or e-mail malvernhillsnils@gmail.com Assessments are by appointment and undertaken on Wednesdays between Midday and 3pm at the Citizens Advice offices, Malvern Heights, Enigma Business Park, Malvern WR14 1BF.

maternity clothes library Malvern Maternity Clothes Library recently welcomed its 300th visitor. Claire Taylor, (pictured) was delighted to go away with her arms full of lovely clothes to dress her growing bump in at very little cost. Based in Malvern Wells, the clothes library was set up twelve years ago by NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor, Frances Thurlow. ‘I wanted to raise funds to support breastfeeding in our community, so we came up with the idea of a maternity clothes lending service’ says Frances. ‘Instead of rifling through a bin bag of hand-me downs from a neighbour who was two sizes smaller, how about pooling our maternity clothes in one place where you could get a good selection as well as the right size? We all agreed and everyone started passing their bin bags in my direction!” Although independent of the National Childbirth Trust, the funds raised by the library support local NCT ‘Baby Latte’ breastfeeding support

groups and other activities. Malvern Hills NCT Branch is one of NCT’s network of over 300 local branches in the UK, dedicated to supporting parents via a range of services. In the last year alone 265 families have received invaluable free breastfeeding support through the NCT Malvern Hills Branch breastfeeding support groups. As well as raising money, the maternity clothes library also helps to conserve resources by reusing clothes at a local level. Malvern’s Maternity Clothes Library has thousands of lovely items in all sizes and you don’t have to be a member of NCT to use it. A visit to the library costs £5 and each item of clothing costs £1 to hire for as long as the borrower needs it. For details, contact Frances on (01684) 561485 or by email: francesthurlow@hotmail.co.uk

Music

autumn in malvern The Autumn in Malvern festival is a highly regarded series of artistic events and exhibitions both in and around Malvern. Renowned musicians will be performing and there’s also talks, a walk and the chance to take part in other activities.

t

he Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra is among Benjamin Britten’s most popular works and it will be performed at this year’s festival by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Britten’s inspiration for the work came from the second movement of Purcell’s Abdelazer suite and the resulting music is a model of orchestral craftsmanship. It is one of Britten’s best known pieces and begins with the full orchestra playing before each section takes its turn, from woodwind, brass and strings to percussion. The piece climaxes in a fugue which is arguably one of the greatest moments of orchestral music of the past century. The programme for the concert also includes Dvorak’s Ninth Symphony, better known as the New World Symphony and takes place at 3pm on Sunday 1st October at The University of Worcester Arena. There are children’s tickets available at £5 and a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) at £38, alongside regular adult and concessionary tickets (£19 and £9). Other highlights during October include: Harold & Laura Knight: A Partnership of Painters: an illustrated talk by David Evans FRSA at Colwall Village Hall on Saturday 7th October The Fateful Voyage: a recital with narration by Kate Kennedy which tells the story of the friendship between two Great War composers and a poet, Saturday 14th October at Colwall Village Hall (with Matthew Sandy, Tenor and pianist Simon Over) Festival Walk 2017 - Victorian Malvern: Denise Preston leads a walking tour from Great Malvern station, full of fascinating information about the

40

town’s heritage. Saturday 21st October, tickets in advance from Malvern Theatres box office Music Inspired by Poetry: Adrian Lucas conducts Aldwyn Voices with works by Tippet, Tavener, Elgar, Finzi and Britten. They are joined by violinist Fenella Humphreys and Nicola Eimer on piano for a performance of Vaughan William’s The Lark Ascending (the original 1919 arrangement for Violin and Piano). The performance takes place on Sunday 29th October at 3.30pm in Great Malvern Priory. The Autumn in Malvern Festival continues until the end of October. Well Being

moving forward In our small town, nestled safely into the side of these ancient hills, the sun is shining. In other parts of the world the weather is not so kind. As I write this people are assessing the damage from two hurricanes that moved through the Caribbean islands and the east coast of the United States. The west coast of the United States is full of smoke from devastating wild fires. Thousands of people in Asia have been displaced as a result of flooding. A few days ago there was an earthquake in South America. The news is not only full of extreme events in the natural world, but of devastation and the potential for devastation caused more directly by human beings. How do we proceed in a world like this? It can be tempting to see these crises in the world as an invitation to respond in some way. There is some wisdom in asking the question, “What does the world want from me?” But asking this question can lead to being overwhelmed or frozen with indecision. Sometimes we see this on a smaller scale when events in our own lives seem to overtake us and we can’t find a way back towards taking positive action. My Buddhist teacher, David Brazier, suggests that a better to question to ask is, “What does reality want from me?” Reality includes what’s happening in the world, or the big events in our own lives. It also includes us. Human beings have strengths and weaknesses. We have some things that we are skilled at offering to other people and the world, some things that are on the edge of our comfort zone, and some things that are impossible for us to offer. When I first moved to Malvern I asked myself this kind of question. I imagined two circles: the first — what the world was calling for; the second — what my skills were. I asked myself what was in the space where these two circles overlapped. Out of this questioning came the first of the courses I teach

48

By Kaspa Thompson in mindfulness meditation. Keeping my interest on the place these circles overlap has led me forward in my life, to other work and projects. It has also taken me through a process of getting to know myself more deeply and of self-acceptance. Asking yourself this question might lead to small actions at first; making a friend of cup of tea, holding the door open for someone or smiling at a neighbour. Perhaps it will lead on to offerings that take a little more time: planting some wildflower seeds in your garden, giving a lift to someone who struggles to get around or choosing to volunteer in your community. Living in this way is deeply satisfying. We take realistic positive action, pointing ourselves in the direction of unfolding goodness, starting from a position of self-empathy and selfacceptance. In this way we grow and flourish. We move towards a place of joy as we make beneficial and sustainable offerings to ourselves and the world.

Kaspa Thompson is a psychotherapist, mindfulness teacher and Buddhist priest. For info on therapy and mindfulness classes see: www.kaspathompson.co.uk and for his local Buddhist group see: www.amidamandala.com

Orchard Lodge Clinic Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern

David Jones Heather Else Stuart Wilson Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us

The current guidelines for low back pain and sciatica The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is the body that guides the treatments available on the NHS. Their latest guidelines for low back pain and sciatica came out at the end of 2016.

Diagnosis

A lot of back pain is termed non specific. In other words nobody quite knows exactly what is causing it. This has led the new guidelines to discourage the use of lots of Xrays and scans to get a formal diagnosis. They are in effect saying that it is better to just get on with finding a solution. At Orchard Lodge the majority of people are treated without these tests although there are many occasions where we still encourage people to have further investigation to avoid missing serious problems.

Treatment

The guidelines encourage people to help themselves. In particular people are told to keep up normal activity. Specific exercises are encouraged and use of back braces and supports is no longer thought helpful. In general we wholeheartedly agree with these principles. The new guidelines also encourage manual therapy including manipulation, mobilisation and soft tissue

techniques which are all techniques that we have always practiced in our clinic. Interestingly in the previous 2009 guidelines acupuncture was a favoured treatment. However the new guidelines have dropped it. This came as a surprise as it is a technique that huge numbers of our patients have found helpful. We continue to offer medical acupuncture for many types of pain.

Psychological and Drug treatments

Interestingly the new guidelines have focussed on using psychological techniques to manage low back pain but only in conjunction with other physical treatment. Generally overuse of drug treatments is now discouraged. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines can be used over the short term or weak opioids where these are unsuitable.

Summary

The new NICE guidelines made interesting reading for us at Orchard Lodge. However in the end it was good to see that many of our approaches and techniques are still corroborated by scientific research.

Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs ÂŁ45. Follow-up sessions ÂŁ40.

Recipe

autumn quinoa Make a healthy change for good! Try quinoa - it’s high in protein and packed with all the essential amino acids your body needs. 1. Rinse the quinoa well in a sieve. 2. Add the quinoa to a pan, cover with the water and bring to the boil. Simmer for ten minutes. 3. Remove from heat, cover and leave to absorb remaining water. Quinoa will increase by 3 to 4 times in volume and when cooked has a light fluffy texture. 4. Heat oil in a pan, add the red onion, ginger, apple and carrot and cook until starting to caramelise. 5. Add the crushed coriander seeds and sesame seeds and a good handful of kale. Cook until the kale has wilted then adds the cooked quinoa. 6. Season well and stir carefully to combine.

Ready in 20 mins

Ingredients ½ cup quinoa 1 cup water 1 red onion, sliced 2 carrots finely shredded 1 small eating apple sliced 1 tsp coriander seeds crushed 1 tbsp sesame seeds crushed 1 inch piece of fresh ginger, grated 2 tbsp extra virgin rapeseed oil large handful of shredded kale salt and freshly ground pepper

Theatre News

driving miss daisy By Alfred Uhry Presented by Theatre Royal Bath Starring Dame Siân Phillips & Derek Griffiths When elderly widow Daisy Werthan crashes her car one day in 1948, her son hires her a chauffeur, an African-American named Hoke Colburn. Daisy and Hoke’s relationship gets off to a rocky start, but as times change across a 25 year backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound and life-altering friendship blossoms in this acclaimed comedy drama. From its landmark off-Broadway production in 1987 to the remarkable success of the 1989 film version, which was the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Driving Miss Daisy has touched the hearts of millions worldwide. From her multi award-wining performance in I, Claudius to the epic film Dune, from a Tony nominated performance of Marlene on Broadway to Cabaret in the West End, Dame Siân Phillips has enjoyed a dazzling career which spans more than seven decades. RSC actor and legendary children’s show presenter, Derek Griffiths’ numerous West End credits include the original production of Beauty and the Beast in which he originated the role of Lumière and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Driving Miss Daisy is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th November. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
