VOLUNTEER FOR POSITIVE THOUGHTS Positive Thoughts (Malvern Mental Health Support Group) helps people experiencing mental health difficulties through a weekly ‘drop-in’ support group. They need a new Treasurer to undertake a variety of tasks including keeping records of monies received and paid out, compiling an annual report, arranging for independent auditing of the accounts and attending Trustee meetings (early evenings, lasting about 2 hours). The volunteer will need to be reliable and trustworthy with some basic book-keeping experience or accountancy skills, have an interest in mental health issues and be happy to attend several ‘drop-ins’ to get a feel for the work, before making a formal application. The group is also seeking a Group Befriender who would chat to members of the group (Friday afternoons at Malvern Cube) and help make and serve the refreshments. For further information please contact Kay Bromley, Volunteer Co-ordinator, Malvern Hills Volunteering – malvernhillsvolunteering@gmail.com or phone on 07510 012092. GUTTER PRO Before the autumn storms sweep in, now is a good moment to carry out maintenance work on your home including clearing gutters. Moss, leaves and other debris can accumulate in gutters and cause blockages, which means water could overflow when there’s a downpour. Access to roofs can be a challenge, but Gutter Pro uses a ground-based camera and vacuum system to professionally clean guttering. They’ll take photos beforehand and if there’s nothing to clean, you won’t be charged. Their system can reach up to three storeys high and once cleaning is complete you can see more photos to check the gutters are clear. Gutter pro also carries out fascia cleaning and is run locally by Adrian Gilbert, who has many glowing testimonials from his customers. If you’d like to find out more, you can email Adrian Gilbert on adriangilbert@gutterpro.co.uk or visit www.gutterpro.co.uk

Feature
christmas trends By Jane Knowles, from Just So
I often think greetings cards are the way to spot new trends in design. A card can be produced for a fraction of the cost of larger more permanent items, so maybe companies are willing to take more risks and employ young designers with fresh ideas, which will be less of an issue if the trend doesn’t catch on? We have had a whole load of trends over the recent years. A few years ago, every card I was offered had a cup cake or a pair of shoes on. Last year it was Unicorns (still going strong) Prosecco and Gin, but we now have Llamas competing for top spot...who would have thought it?!
For present buying trends, think useful, practical and a bit of a treat. A great present is something you would have loved to buy for yourself, but couldn’t quite justify the cost, and then someone else spotted it was perfect for you, and bought it as a gift. Smiles all round!
Design trends that have been received well by the public in cards are then adopted by clothing and home-ware producers. This season look out for Pineapples and Cactus too, a nod to the times when a pineapple was a true luxury and signified wealth and prosperity. When I am buying, it is fine to stock ‘trend items’, they are fun and lift the shop but you also need to stock the items that make people feel comfortable, warm and safe as we head into the darker nights. So I stock candles, cosy lighting, cuddly cushions and bright coloured soup mugs, items that encourage you to ‘hunker down’ and prepare for winter. Colours are also important trend setters, especially in clothing and soft furnishings, so look out for anything in warm mustard and gold, russet and sage green. We have some wonderful cashmere relaxed fit jumpers and cardigans coming into stock in an array of jewel colours which celebrate the season and keep you toasty! I think the Christmas Decoration trend this year could be best described by the term ‘Fantasy’. So sparkly unicorns, mini ballet dancers and gorgeous baubles with leaves, feathers and mini led lights inside will be lighting up homes and delighting children of all ages.

All About...
the worcestershire beacon race The Worcestershire Beacon Race is a tough 7-mile race to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon. Now in its seventh decade, it takes place this year on Saturday 13th October. John Brook has been involved in the race for more than 30 years and tells us more.
How old is race? It began in 1953 and although the route has changed a few times to avoid traffic, it has always started in Great Malvern before heading up the Beacon, around North Hill and back into the town. Worcester Athletic Club has always organised the race and at one time it took place in March; switching it to October means the weather conditions are generally more favourable. I became involved when my company at the time (Brookhire) began sponsoring it. The race was classed as a low-grade fell run until the Beacon path was given a permanent surface and these days its described as an all-terrain race.
What are hardest parts? There are a couple of particularly challenging sections. After starting in Rosebank Gardens the course follows a circuitous route to St Ann’s Well. The next part from the Wyche Road to the Goldmine and onto the Beacon is probably the hardest section. However, for some runners, the most difficult part is later, after the descent to West Malvern when there’s a second climb around North Hill. I’ve run the race for the past 35 years without a break. Originally I would have run it in about an hour and I am somewhat slower these days. It certainly doesn’t get any easier!
Who enters? It’s recognised as one of the hardest races around and because of that, we attract some very talented runners. Usually the fastest runners complete the course in around 46 minutes but the course record was set in 2001 by A. Gardner from Stroud Athletic Club, who completed it in 41 minutes and 35 seconds. It’s incredible to watch the fast runners who are more like mountain goats than humans!
22
Currently around 250 to 300 runners take part, from casual to extremely competent, but it’s definitely not a fun-run and a good level of fitness is required. Entrants come from as far away as London, Birmingham and Bristol and there’s always a good contingent of local runners. Local clubs like Malvern joggers are great supporters of the race and the participants are always very positive about it. If you have nice weather, the views are unrivalled and we always have excellent hospitality afterwards. Of course the race only happens thanks to the hard work of David Waldron and Andrew Peach from Worcester Athletic Club plus a host of marshalls. To read more about the race, including entry, visit www.worcester-ac.co.uk

The work of the shop is vital to the successful running and delivery of the services provided by the hospice and its staff. Without the retail volunteers, the hospice simply couldn’t keep the shops open and continue their vital support to the hospice. Within the shop there are a number of different roles including:

Well Being
WELLBEING IN AUTUMN Worcester has disappeared into the mist that is sitting in the Severn Valley. The garden is damp from a wave of rain that passed over the hills. Soon, the sun will dip under the horizon and the dark night will come. I’m writing this in early September, and it’s not quite evening. The days have been getting noticeably shorter recently, and I am reminded of winter days in my youth when I would walk to work in the dark, walk home in the dark and spend the day longing for natural light rather than the fluorescent glow of the department store I was working in. As summer draws to a close I also find myself remembering those first days of sunshine this year, after the long snowy winter. The sprits of the whole town seemed to lift when the bright weather arrived. What can we do to stay happy as the hours of light become less, the temperature cools, and the clouds roll in? Hygge Lots of you will have heard of Hygge. Pronounced Hue-guh, this is a Danish word that means something like cosiness. When interviewed by the BBC, Susanne Nilson said, “Hygge could be families and friends getting together for a meal, with the lighting dimmed, or it could be time spent on your own reading a good book.” Maybe we can think of Hygge as creating conditions that help us to relax: Lighting candles, or sitting around a fire (inside or outside), creating a winter evening playlist that slowly gets more and more chilled, or sharing a good meal with friends. Getting outside As Arthur Wainwright famously said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Getting outside means getting vitamin D. It means moving the body, and it means you’re more likely to look at trees. All of these things are really good for you. In cold damp weather I often feel reluctant to go up onto the hills, but every time I do I feel better afterwards. Eating well This summer I’ve been enjoying lots of wonderful salads and Buddha bowls for lunch. Our veg patch needed plenty of watering but the results

By Kaspa Thompson were amazing, and it’s been great to go outside, pick something and have it on my plate minutes later. Now the earth is turning, different things are coming into season, and I’ll be enjoying homemade soups with squash, leeks and other winter goodies. Sometimes – particularly when I’m on my own – cooking can seem like a chore. But when I eat good food I always feel better. Community of Christmas Concert Maybe itMagic feels easier to meet people when the weather is good, and easier to stay at home on your own on cold dark nights. But we are social beings. We each like different amounts of company, but some company is good for the soul, so host a dinner party, meet a friend for a coffee, or join a book club. Plan something you enjoy If the thought of a long dark winter really does lower your mood then make sure you plan some bright spots. Make a date with yourself, or a friend, and put it in your diary. Having something to look forward to in the future can make you feel better right now. As the weather changes, and the light changes, it can be easy to fall into wishing for the autumn and winter to already be over. All of the suggestions I’ve made today are based on accepting the reality of what is, and finding ways of appreciating and making the most of what is happening right now. Whether you are a cold weather person or a hot weather person, I hope you have an easy and enjoyable autumn.

What type of pain do I have? names like cytokines and vasoactive amines. Examples of this pain include rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. Interestingly some problems may have more than one type of pain mechanism in play at the same time. In sciatica there may be elements of both neuropathic and inflammatory pain at work. The term “mixed pain syndrome” is used in this case.
Virtually everyone will have experienced a number of different types of pain. Sharp pain of a pin prick, dull ache from a tense muscle, intolerable toothache, burning pain or pins and needles from a damaged nerve. Medically, pain is categorized as follows.
Nociceptive pain
This is the common everyday pain that results from trauma and injury. It can affect the muscles, joints and skin and is usually Pain intensity localized to the problem area. Sub categories e.g. gall stones may refer pain to the right shoulder area. include mild, moderate and severe.
Neuropathic pain
This is nerve pain associated with damage to the nerves of sensation. It is often accompanied by phenomena such as numbness, hypersensitivity or pins and needles. For example, neuropathic pain often follows shingles. This burning pain lasts long after the blisters have gone and is called post herpetic neuralgia.
Inflammatory pain
This is caused by the stimulation of the pain pathways by chemical mediators that are given off in tissue inflammation. These substances have incomprehensible
Chronic vs. acute
Pain is categorised by how long it lasts. Less than 3-6 months is acute, over 3-6 months is chronic and flare ups of a long term pain are called acute-on-chronic (the word chronic is used colloquially to mean bad but in reality derives from the Greek “chronos” referring to time). If you are troubled by pain please contact us at the clinic. We will assess you and help decide on an appropriate course of action.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

Ever thought about part-time, full-time or live-in work as a paid Care Giver in your area, helping older people stay in their own homes?
Home Instead is very different to other care agencies you may have heard of. Currently we are Worcestershire’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated home care agency and hold the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation in Care, as well as being rated the UK’s No 1 Quality Care Agency by Industry watchdog LaingBuisson. We don’t do the short calls others do and there is always time for our carers to give companionship to their clients as part of the call. Our Caregivers go back to the same clients time and again, getting to know them as friends. We don’t ask our Caregivers to wear uniform because when they take clients out and about it is much nicer to be seen with someone who could be a friend or relative. We have excellent initial training programmes and will add to your skills with courses such as our City and Guilds in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and QCF (NVQ) Level 2 & 3 in Social Care if you choose. Sector leading pay starts from £10.86 per hour, including guaranteed holiday pay with supplements for weekends and other times for Caregivers. Weekly earnings start from £700 including guaranteed holiday pay for live-in carers. A City and Guilds Qualification in Dementia and Alzheimers Care along with fully paid induction training will be provided. Group
living with parkinsons Malvern Parkinson’s Friendship Group meets every month, offering the chance to meet up with other people in a similar situation. One member of the group has sent us his story of how the regular meetings are of benefit. Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition caused by brain cells not producing enough of the chemical Dopamine. This can cause symptoms including tremor, slowness of movement and muscle rigidity. At present there is no known cure but medication and other therapies can help with the symptoms. When I was diagnosed five years ago, I was not surprised as I had a tremor in my left hand for many years. It was only when I developed the tremor in my right hand that the consultant diagnosed Parkinson’s. My main problem is the embarrassment of using cups, glasses and cutlery in company and getting food and drink safely to my mouth! My biggest regret is not being able to hold a book or newspaper steady.
I have a book holder which helps but it’s not the same as getting to grips with a book! I am fortunate to have a wife to help with everyday tasks including gardening and driving, and it was her idea we should join our local Parkinson’s Friendship Group. I was not keen to meet other people with Parkinson’s but my wife thought it would be helpful and I am so pleased because we have become part of this wonderful group of members and their carers. We meet on the third Thursday of each month at Clarence Park Village in Malvern Link from 2.30pm until 4.30pm. We have very interesting speakers, access to professionals specialising in Parkinson’s and trips out when we can. We enjoy a laugh and chat over tea and biscuits so it’s definitely not doom and gloom and we look forward to our meetings. If you are interested in the group, you are welcome to simply turn up to one of our meetings or speak to Hazel on (01684) 563172

life’s milestones. ‘I lost a good friend abroad and when attending his funeral, it dawned on me he might have wanted us to celebrate his life differently’ she says. ‘A lot of effort goes into bringing family and friends together for these very special events and you don’t want to miss the opportunity to make the ceremony memorable.’ Sheila will meet with you and listen to your wishes before drawing up a plan and written script which can be re-worked before it is finally delivered. ‘People come to me when they realise they don’t have to stick with the traditional ways of marking special moments. Serves 4
Recipe
Autumn soup The ingredients are cooked in a tray in the oven. Butternut squash is easy to slice, but this works well with pumpkin later in the season. 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. 2. Roast the chunks of squash in the oil in the hot oven for 20 minutes. Add the onion, ginger and garlic to the roasting pan and roast for 15 minutes more. 3. Place the roasted mixture into a blender and add ½ litre vegetable stock. 4. Blend; add more water for a thinner soup. Season to taste. 5. Reheat to serve.
Ready in 50 minutes
Ingredients 1 white onion finely chopped 1 garlic clove crushed medium butternut squash cut into chunks 3cm piece of ginger crushed 1 tsp bouillon powder ½ litre water 4 tbsp rapeseed oil
Tip: Adding the fresh ginger gives a warming effect and is good for the digestion too.

Theatre News
still alice
Michael Park is delighted to announce that following a hugely successful three-week run at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year, Christine Mary Dunford’s newly adapted version of Lisa Genova’s best-selling novel, STILL ALICE, comes to Malvern Theatres this November, directed by David Grindley and starring Sharon Small as Alice.
still alice Win a pair of tickets to this show at Malvern Theatres. Please answer the following question: The stage adaptation of Still Alice is based on the best-selling novel by which author?
STILL ALICE follows 50 year-old Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor at Harvard University, as she battles with early-onset dementia and explores the effects the disease has on identity, family and relationships in this uncompromising yet tender portrayal. In 2014, Genova’s novel was adapted into a film starring Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin, for which Moore won the Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for Best Actress.
Email the answer plus your name, postcode and phone number competition@allabout-local.com by Monday 29th October 2018.
Television and stage star, Sharon Small, reprises the role of Alice, her first UK tour in almost twenty-five years, having played it at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year. She is best known for playing Barbara Havers in The Inspector Linley Mysteries (BBC One), Trudi Malloy in Mistresses (BBC One), Christine opposite Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in the film adaptation of About A Boy, and most recently as Brigitte Rayne in Trust Me opposite Jodie Whittaker (BBC One). Her vast array of stage work includes Simon Stephens’s adaptation of The Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre, and When Harry Met Sally at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
*For terms & conditions see our website www.allaboutmalvernhills.com
Still Alice will be at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th November. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
