Advice
five tips for being tax-wise By Independent Financial Adviser Gary Morris Though the tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April, effective tax planning needn’t be a mad March rush. In an ideal world, tax planning wouldn’t be left until towards the end of the tax year. Here’s our list of handy hints to help you get ahead. 1. Your ISA allowance: Use it if you can! With a cash ISA or a stocks and shares ISA (or a combination of the two) you can save or invest up to £20,000 a year tax free. To help you maximise the benefits of ISAs, here are four things to consider when planning for the year ahead… • If you are in a position to, it makes sense for you and your spouse to take advantage of each other’s ISA allowance, particularly if one of you has more financial resources than the other. That way, you can save (in the case of cash ISAs) or invest (in the case of stocks and shares ISAs) up to £40,000 in 2018/19. • Currently, 16 and 17-year-olds actually get two ISA allowances, as they’re able to open a Junior ISA (which for 2018/19 has a limit of £4,260) and an adult cash ISA. This means that you can put away up to £24,260 in your child’s name tax free this tax year. • People aged 18-39 can open a Lifetime ISA, which entitles them to save up to £4,000 a year until they’re 50. The government will top up the savings by 25%, up to a maximum of £1,000 a year. • Remember: Not all ISAs are flexible, so check your terms and conditions. 2. Consider topping up your pension Normally, between you and your employer, you can pay a maximum of £40,000 into your pension in a tax year (it’s called your annual allowance) before it becomes subject to tax. Take steps to maximise your pension pot. If you don’t manage to make full use of your £40,000 pensions annual allowance this tax year, you can carry it forward for up to three years. You can also boost your basic State Pension by paying voluntary Class 3 National Insurance Contributions (NICs). 3. Limiting inheritance tax You can act at any time to help reduce a potential inheritance tax (IHT) bill when you’re no longer around. An IHT bill only applies if your estate is valued above £325,000. One way you can do this is by giving away up to £3,000 worth of gifts (such as money or
6
possessions) each tax year, so they are no longer included when the value of your estate is calculated. This is known as the annual exemption. The exemption applies to individuals – so as a couple you can make £6,000 worth of gifts. It can also be carried forward for one year so, if you didn’t do this last year (2017/18), then you can, as a couple, make £12,000 worth of gifts before 6 April 2019. 4. Making charitable donations Will you be donating to any worthy causes this 2018/19 tax year? If you are, you can receive full tax relief on your contributions through Gift Aid, or straight from your wages or pension via Payroll Giving. If you’re a higher rate taxpayer (i.e. if you pay 40% or 45% tax) you can claim back the difference between the tax on your donation and what the charity got back. You’ll need to give details when filling out your Self-Assessment tax return (if you’re not required to fill one of these out, get in touch with HMRC). 5. Be savvy with your capital gains tax allowance Capital gains tax (CGT) is a tax on the gains (i.e. profit) you make when you sell something, such as an investment portfolio or second home. But everyone has an annual allowance before CGT applies, of £11,700 (in 2018/19). Like the ISA allowance, it doesn’t roll over, so if you don’t use it you’ll lose out – and may have to pay more tax in the future.

DRIVING MISS DAISY Driving Miss Daisy is a transport service helping older people to maintain their independence. Whether it’s a visit to a friend, the supermarket or a trip to the doctors, this friendly, caring service is there to help. With three cars on the road they are just around the corner from you. ‘It’s not just about driving, it’s also about companionship’ says Alastair Cameron, who runs the service in Malvern. ‘We aren’t carers, but we do take extra care of our customers. We don’t just drop them at the supermarket, we’ll assist them around the store and are happy to unpack the groceries when they are home again. If it’s a trip to the doctor, we can accompany them and even report back to a concerned son or daughter.’ As well as Alastair, the other drivers are Katherine and Bev. They are all first-aid trained and DBSchecked. ‘Some people specifically ask for a lady driver which is fine’ continues Alastair ‘and unlike using a taxi company, you’ll know who is coming to collect you.’ The company has an operator’s licence from the local authority and carries out other duties including school runs. They also carry out airport or cruise drop-off and pick-ups at any time, seven days a week. ‘Our catch phrase is ‘We’re family when family can’t be there’ says Alastair. ‘We run a reliable service and our pricing is very competitive - you’ll be surprised at how cost-effective our service can be.’ All journeys must be pre-booked. worcester FESTIVAL For a fortnight in August, The Worcester Festival offers music, exhibitions, trails and all kinds of activities around the city. Many of the events are completely free and the whole festival is overseen by Percy the Peacock! As the festival mascot, Percy can often be found at festival events, or walking around the centre of Worcester. This year, Percy has his very own trail – simply spot Percy’s cheeky face in twenty shops around Crowngate and you could win a prize! There’s also a family quiz trail and a Percy colouring competition, just pop into the festival box office at Huntingdon Hall to pick up the details. There’s plenty else going on for the opening day of the festival on Saturday 11th August. A peal of bells will ring out from the cathedral at 10am before the Lord Mayor officially declares the festival open, outside The Guildhall at 10.55am. The festival brochure has almost 30 different activities to take part in on the opening day alone! Some of the highlights include arts and craft workshops, tours of the cathedral, the Worcester Stands Tall Sculpture trail, a Living History show at Spetchley Park, and the St Richard’s Hospice Duck Race on the river (spectating from South Quay). Once again, the popular Gugge 2000 band will be performing in the city centre. Through the week, Battle of Worcester Society guides will be leading tours around some of the city’s historic places. It’s a chance to learn about the last battle of the English Civil War, see some of the places associated with the battle and learn things you never knew about the Faithful City. The cathedral has a number of tours taking place throughout the festival, giving you the chance to venture into places around this historic building which aren’t usually open to the public. There’s a tour of the gardens, the chance to visit the cathedral’s medieval library, while for one of the best views of the city, you can climb the tower. The Commandery hosts a number of children’s workshops. At The Hive and the City Museum

The Worcester Festival takes place from Saturday 11th August to Monday 27th August The above is just a small part of what’s going on! You can read more in the festival brochure which can be picked up from the Worcester Live box office at Huntingdon Hall and Worcester Tourist Information Centre, next to The Guildhall.

Local Show
hallow horticultural show Hallow Horticultural Society has had a busy year so far, with trips out, a Spring Show, and many inspiring speakers. One of the highlights of the year is the Annual Show, which takes place this year on Saturday 15th September. Starting at 2pm in Hallow Parish Hall, this is an opportunity for everyone, not just keen gardeners, to show off the fruits of their labours. There are classes for all ages and abilities, including children. You can take part whether you are a gardener or not and you don’t have to be a member of Hallow Gardeners to enter. Apart from the usual flower, fruit and vegetable classes for those who have green fingers, there’s a chance for photographers, cooks, sewers, and flower arrangers to exhibit. Take a look at the show schedule on the website (see below) and click on the link. If you would like to enter, just fill in the entry form and get it back by Thursday evening 13th September, or pop it in an envelope and leave it at either of the village shops in
Hallow. Don’t be shy, remember, it’s not the winning but the taking part, although you may be surprised! If you don’t feel up to exhibiting then just come along to admire what’s on display and enjoy a cuppa and a piece of homemade cake. You might even be inspired to take part in the future. Away from the show, Hallow Horticultural Society has a summer social evening for its members taking place at Bonterre C.I.C. at Top Barn in August. In September there’s a trip to Tyntesfield House and Gardens as well as a talk about Climbers later in the month. If you would like to become a member, (no you don’t have to be a gardener) you can join now or at the show. It costs just £10 for the remainder of this year and all of 2019.

Feature
worcester civic society Worcester has a long and proud history. The city can lay claim to being the home of many notable people, buildings and moments that were pivotal in English history. Worcester Civic Society exists to champion the city’s heritage and with a varied programme of events they create opportunities for discussion, particularly on matters affecting the City’s development and presentation. Sandra Taylor, a member of the society, tells us more. When most people hear the words ‘Civic Society’ they think of matters relating to the city/town Mayor or local dignitaries when in reality we are a group concerned primarily with matters relating to heritage and urban development within their local area. You could call us the public voice that champions the cause of saving historic monuments and buildings from falling into disrepair or being sold off to developers with an eye to demolishing them. We also keep a keen eye on proposals for new housing, business parks or other commercial developments that will impact on the local area in a variety of ways. Worcester is a city rich in heritage and culture with historic connections dating back to the Domesday Book. Worcester Civic Society strives to ensure that its beauty, history, character and culture are preserved and enjoyed by all. The society has representation at all planning meetings relating to future developments within the area and is also responsible for the Blue Plaques at historic sites such the old city gates, commemorating noted former citizens of the city such as Alice Ottley, Hannah Snell and the Reverend Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy. Throughout the year the society arranges events or talks each month (with the exception of August due to many people being away). This year saw members visit the historic town of Ludlow where we were guests of Ludlow Civic Society, enjoying refreshments on arrival before being taken on a
24
guided tour of the town. In September there will be a day trip to Wells in Somerset. Topics covered in talks have ranged from Worcester Cathedral, the Worcestershire Regiment and its connection with the city and the RAF at Croome Park. Forthcoming events include the society having a stall at the Worcester Show in Gheluvelt Park on 12th August, members of Ludlow Civic Society visiting Worcester, the Annual General Meeting in November and a social evening for members in December or January. Two heritage trails are currently being developed, one within the city itself and a lengthy, more strenuous trail covering 17 miles circling around the city. Further blue plaques are also planned and the 2019 programme of events will shortly be finalised. We are always pleased to welcome new members. Membership of the Civic Society is open to all, details of corporate, family and individual membership can be found on the Society website along with a subscription form: www.worcestercivicsociety.org.uk . Alternatively payment can be made by cheque via the post, the details of the Membership Secretary can be found on the Membership page of the website.

Recipe
minty recipes
Happy Holidays!
from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop We have recently launched a series of ‘Wednesday Workshops’ at Roots, a morning of sharing skills, tips and tricks of growing and preparing herbs, flowers and salads. For each course, we prepare a few recipes for our guests to take home and try. By far the most popular yet has been the selection of ‘Minty recipes’. I think this is because mint, particularly traditional Spearmint, is one of the easiest to grow and most common herbs to pop up, year after year in everyone’s garden like a good, reliable, old friend. Those young mint shoots burst into life in April and if you keep picking, then the plant rewards you with a plentiful supply all summer and well into the autumn until the first frosts.
Minty Apple Mojito
Mint Sauce Ingredients 4 tbsp spearmint 1 tsp caster sugar pinch salt juice of half a lemon
Ingredients
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
A big handful of fresh spearmint leaves
half tsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp just boiled water
4 tsp caster sugar 2 limes, one juiced, one sliced crushed ice chilled cloudy apple juice (750ml) a splash of white rum
Makes enough for 4-6 people to dress roast spring lamb. Finely chop the mint, add sugar, salt, lemon, vinegar and mustard. Stir, then add a little just boiled water to loosen the sauce. Serve immediately.
Put the ice, lime, sugar, mint and rum (if using) into a large jug and pour over the apple juice. Stir well, allow to ‘steep’ briefly, then pour into serving glasses of your choice.
Mint Tea BE GENEROUS At least three large sprigs per cup Water a minute or so off the boil A large dessert spoon of honey and a thick wedge of lemon Put the honey, mint and lemon wedge into a mug of your choice then pour over the hot water. Allow to steep, enjoying the aromas until cool enough to sip. This is a particularly reviving, warm tonic.

LOWER BROADHEATH SHOP Plans to open a Community Shop in Lower Broadheath are progressing well. Planning approval has been granted for a temporary shop next to The Bell Inn, which will offer a range of local services. Before that, there’s more work to do and volunteers are needed to help make the plans a reality. Earlier this year a share offer was opened to raise £25,000 towards the project and that target has now been met, thanks to a great response from many people in the village and beyond. The project has also been awarded grants of £10,000 each from The National Lottery Fund Awards for All and The Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation. Can you help with Phase Two? A stand-alone shop group is being formed to start thinking about what goods people want to see for sale. A volunteer group is being formed with one or two leaders, Post Office volunteers are needed and the number of hours the shop can open will
depend on how many volunteers come forward. A site group will also be formed for arranging utilities, gardening, upkeep decorating and general maintenance which will keep the shop looking smart. There is also a vacancy for a part-time shop manager, working 20 hours a week on a competitive salary. Please see the website www.lowerbroadheathshop.com or email info@lowerbroadheathshop.com for details. There’s a Lower Broadheath Community Shop Showcase event taking place on Wednesday 19th September. It’s a chance to meet local producers and sample some of the products that will be stocked in the new shop. Its also a chance to get an update on how the project is progressing and have your say. The Showcase event begins at 8pm in the Memorial Hall on Church Lane (WR2 6QY) www.lowerbroadheathshop.com facebook: lowerbroadheathshop Twitter: broadheathshop

Theatre News
the wipers times Following sold-out UK tours in 2016 and 2017, and a critically acclaimed hit run in the West End, The Wipers Times will once again tour the UK this Autumn. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s satirical play The Wipers Times - a stage adaptation of their awardwinning BBC film - tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line. In a bombed out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mispronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the frontline. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the Top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity. The Wipers Times will be on stage at Malvern Theatres from Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd September. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
