What a lot of ways we have to enjoy the festive season! From pantomimes to meeting Father Christmas, there is fun to be had whether you are young or old. Many events are about helping others, like Mick and Norma Gale in Rushwick, who raise thousands of pounds for the Air Ambulance with their Christmas lights display (Page 14). Looking beyond Christmas, we have plenty more to look forward to, including Gardening Clubs, Worcester Speakers, and a Festival of Winter Walking to name a few. Whatever might interest you, there’s plenty of inspiration contained in the pages of this magazine. Enjoy the festive period and I hope you have a good start to 2019!

All About...

SANTA'S GARDEN Every year Mick and Norma Gale decorate their garden in Rushwick with an incredible array of Christmas Lights and decorations. Over the years they’ve raised thousands of pounds for charity. Mick Gale tells us more.

When did you start the decorations? Rushwick used to have an Open Gardens event in the summer and we got involved in that. One afternoon I was talking to a neighbour who asked ‘why don’t you do some lights at Christmas?’. The first year we started with decorations on the front of house, but after that I was going out to buy lights, adding more and more each time! That was fifteen years ago and we’re still at it today. In total we’ve raised around £7,000. In the first year the total was £60 and last year it was £1,500, so the fundraising side has grown a lot. For the past twelve years we’ve raised money for the Midlands Air Ambulance. Every last penny we raise goes to them. The running costs aren’t that high as the lights are low power LEDs.

Where do people visit from? You would be amazed. Our furthest visitors come from Australia and the USA, they’re visiting relatives in Worcester and decide to drop by. We also have two friends, one from Staffordshire and the other from Cornwall, who meet every year by coming along. They say that once they’ve visited us, Christmas can start! Getting pictures online has changed it all, my son looks after updates on our facebook page and that spreads the message. People are so generous with their donations. We get anonymous envelopes through the door and even when I’m packing away, people are still giving. People’s generosity is fantastic

How do you choose your decorations? We try and change things every year. This year we went out shopping and were in a warehouse when I spotted a giant inflatable Santa. He’s six metres tall and I said to my wife ‘I’m going to buy that’. We got him home and tested him, he’ll

14

be joining the other decorations which include reindeers, a snowman plus LED lights and lasers. The decorations are in the front and back gardens, it’s all paved and gravelled so you can walk around easily. For the first few nights we have a few mince pies and mulled wine and we like to chat to people who come to see the lights. We even open on the evening of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It’s a chance to walk your dinner off and escape the family for a bit!

Santa’s Garden between 15th and 29th December at 66 Christine Avenue in Rushwick. The lights are on between 6pm and 10pm each evening. You can read more on their website, www.santasgarden.co.uk

THE HOP POCKET SHOPPING VILLAGE CELEBRATING 30 YEARS The original spark for The Hop Pocket was Janet Pudge selling handmade beer jugs for a farming charity. She realised that people were interested in quality crafts and due to a decline in the hop industry there was redundant space in the hop kilns at the front of the farm house. In 1988 Janet and husband John ‘stuck a sign on the side of the road’ and opened the Hop Pocket Craft Shop with no real fanfare at all. Everything on display was on sale and return from local craftspeople that Janet knew or had met at craft fairs.

The Hop Pocket Craft Shop was popular from the beginning and Janet is rightly proud that they never had a day without a customer. Very soon, in response to repeated requests, a tea room was opened at the back of the farm house, giving Janet’s customers a rest and a slice of homemade cake. More customers and more crafts led to expansion of the shop, twice! 1999 was a huge year with a move to a larger building at the back of the farm house, becoming The Hop Pocket Craft Centre with a restaurant, Wine Company, Deli and craft units. Over the years more and more agricultural buildings have been converted, the Craft Centre has been expanded to allow more seating in the restaurant and diverse new businesses have thrived at The Hop Pocket. Car parks have been expanded, infrastructure improved and a couple of years ago a new building was built purposely for commercial use, the first non-agricultural building on the site. John and Janet’s sons, William and Matthew are now involved in a truly family business that is a world away from the farm on which they grew up. The hop kilns and barns they played in as children are now a vibrant mixed use site, home to artisan food makers, craft workers, even an accountant and a recruitment agency. You can find The Hop Pocket Shopping Village in Bishops Frome, off the A4103 Worcester Hereford Road.

Group

TOASTMASTERS If the idea of speaking in front of other people fills you with dread, you are not alone! A new group has started in Worcester which is dedicated to helping people overcome their fear of speaking in public. Toastmasters Worcester Speakers can help you learn to speak in public in a safe environment where you can practise in front of other people. If that sounds scary then try not to worry, this is a supportive group where you only stand up and speak once you are ready to do so. Meeting twice a month, all sorts of people come along to learn the art of public speaking, improve their skills and grow in confidence. ‘It’s a chance to get out of your comfort zone in a space that’s very supportive’ according to Elaine Watt, who is one of the members. ‘It’s no exaggeration to say that every single person who walks through the door will feel anxiety, but nobody is ever made to stand up. You are welcome to come along and watch others speak for a few weeks until you feel ready to take the plunge.’ Worcester Speakers is a not-for-profit group and the costs are kept low by members who keep it running. Rather than speaking straight away, you can join and then take on a role such as setting up the room, setting the agenda or even baking cakes for the break! If and when you decide to speak, you’ll be mentored by a more experienced member of the group. This person can either be assigned to you, or you can approach any of the members yourself. You will follow a training pathway, helped with online training tools and creating a framework for your speech. You are given help with all sorts of skills that include body language

and using your voice, but the main objective is simply to stand up and complete your first speech. Worcester Speakers is part of Toastmasters International, which has more than 16,000 clubs located in 143 countries around the world. The Worcester group has grown from another group in nearby Malvern, which has been running successfully for several years. ‘The transformation in people is unbelievable!’ says Elaine. ‘One of our members started by volunteering as the timekeeper, but after 3 months he took the leap to speaking and has since gone far. He now presents Youtube videos and gives tours around his workplace. He is one of many transformational stories.’

Toastmasters Worcester Speakers is a not-for-profit group which always welcomes new members. You can attend as a visitor for free – if you decide to join, the cost is £7 a month. Meetings take place on the first and third Monday evenings of each month at Worcester Group Training Association which is close to Shrub Hill Station in Worcester. dick whittington Tickets are already selling fast for the latest production from The Powick Players. After a break last year, the group is back with a new pantomime at Powick Village Hall. Dick Whittington and His Cat will be produced and directed by Jake Heaton, who, although only 23 years old, already has a wealth of experience from other local productions. ‘He’s doing a fantastic job’ according to Rob Leadbeater, ‘and rehearsals are going really well.’

‘Our rehearsals are great fun and a social event in themselves’ says Rob, ‘and the performances have a party feel for the cast. Some evenings for Dick Whittington are almost sold out and I hope we’ll be able to accommodate everybody who wants to come along!’

This is the first pantomime for the Powick Players since their production of ‘A Long Time Ago’ at the start of 2017. ‘That was our 25th anniversary production’ says Rob, ‘and we needed a break afterwards, to recharge our batteries and recruit some new cast members. We also have a new dancing instructor and I think having a year off has given us new energy which we can put into this pantomime.’ Work on each production typically takes around six months. ‘We always go above and beyond what you might expect from a village pantomime’ says Rob. ‘It helps to cheer up the dark days of winter and many locals like to put the date in their diaries and have something to look forward to.’ The Players rehearse on Sundays at the parish hall in Powick and as production dates approach, they add a second rehearsal on Wednesday evenings. New members are always welcome and there are all sorts of ways to get involved both on- and off-stage.

The Powick Players present Dick Whittington and His Cat, from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd February at Powick Parish Hall. Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for under 12s and can be purchased by calling 07534 248090 or via the Player’s website, powickplayers.co.uk

Recipe

christmas roast organic goose from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop Raised for Christmas, a goose is a symbol of the full year's cycle on the farm. As seasonal breeders, geese take a special place amongst our livestock. For more information about our geese and how we raise them, please visit our website www.familyfarmshop.co.uk A goose for Christmas dinner was quite normal in the 16th and early 17th century, remaining predominant until the Victorian era when the Christmas turkey made its mark, although if money were no object then dining on peacock or swan was de riguer! Maybe more common these days as the centrepiece of a Christmas meal in Scandinavian countries, goose and duck are, quite rightly, regaining their popularity in the UK. Our roast goose recipe benefits from many years’ experience of preparing a Christmas meal and in particular feeling the pressure of family expectation to prepare and cook a feast, for a farming family, that reflects the weight of the occasion. Always served on the ‘family china’ this is a meal that brings us together and reminds us of our family and its roots. My best advice is don’t be scared – good organic goose and duck benefit from an unhurried approach. Rushing and undercooking the bird may lead to it being tough, much better to be laid back, enjoy some festive spirit, let the oven take the strain, roast for longer at a lower temperature and the result will be a tender, succulent bird full of wonderful flavours. A large goose (5.5 - 6kg) will feed 6-8 people. If you have more guests (as we usually do) then why not prepare a piece of organic gammon as well (which can be roasted in advance and simply glazed at the last minute) making that wonderful goose go a little further. Remove all packaging 24 hours before cooking. The goose is better kept unwrapped to allow the skin to dry a little, naturally, ready for roasting. Remove the bag of giblets (inside the cavity) and any extra fat. Rub the goose with a little sea salt

26

all over (inside and out). Pre-heat the oven as hot as you can go, 240ºC/Gas mark 9. While the oven is heating up roughly chop some apples, prunes (chunky apple eighths and prune halves will be fine) and prepare some handfuls of whole, seasonal herbs, sage, thyme, rosemary and parsley. Stuff the cavity of the goose with equal proportions of apple and prunes along with the whole herbs. There’s no need to stitch up the opening, oozing appley, pruney, herby juice will only benefit the gravy. Rub the base of a heavy roasting tray with a little warmed goose fat so that the bird doesn’t stick. When the oven is hot, place the bird in the tray with breast down and then into the oven for about twenty minutes to colour and seal the skin. To achieve colour all over this side you may need to shift it about a bit. After twenty minutes check that the skin is browned and turn the goose over (breast side up). Turn down the oven to 140ºC / Gas mark 1-2. Pour 750ml of liquid into the tray around the bird. We like to use cider, but water or light stock would also work. Allow the bird to roast slowly for at least 45 minutes per kg (about 4 hours). Check periodically to ensure the liquid doesn’t dry out, add a little more if necessary.

Kindly provided by Meg of Roots Family Farm Shop at Rushwick on the Bransford Road - 01905 421104

While the goose is roasting, we like to prepare some apples and figs (if we can get them) cutting them in half, dotting with a little butter and sprinkling with brown sugar. Roasted in the oven or in a pan until caramelized, they will be a soft, unctuous addition to the roast goose. To check the goose is ready, insert a knife into the thickest part of the breast and pull it straight out. It should come out with very little resistance. Lift the goose out of the roasting tray and onto a warm plate or board where it can be held to rest for at least twenty minutes before carving. Lay the apples, figs and some fresh rosemary around the carving plate. The remaining liquor in the roasting tray will probably require separating. A nifty piece of equipment such as a fat separating jug is ideal, but if you don’t have one, you should be able to pour off most of the goose fat from the top of the liquor. The remaining liquor is ideal for the base of the gravy. Thicken it by adding a little slaked cornflour, stock from giblets or boiled vegetables. In a final flourish, reduce the gravy to taste and finish with cream … well it is Christmas!

Well Being

Keeping your weight in balance during the festive season Keren Milton from Slim for Good has some ideas for keeping your weight in balance during the festive season. Christmas can be challenging if you are weight watching but here’s some easy tips to enjoy festive goodies without putting on a single pound! • Stick to a maximum of 3 meals a day including 25% protein. Enjoy any treats at meal times and stop eating for 4 – 6 hours in between meals to burn off excesses and balance your weight loss hormones. • Christmas lunch isn’t the problem, it’s the mince pies, chocolates and alcohol that pile on the pounds. Be selective. Limit your indulgences and only eat what’s mind-blowingly appealing. My rule is: "If contains loads of sugar, it must be richly chocolatey or very lemony then I can easily leave anything else!" • Focus on your portion size when temptations are endless. Dig out a special small plate/bowl and glass just for you and eat Christmas desserts with a teaspoon. You’ll automatically eat slower and appreciate the flavours more. • Always have one glass of water per alcoholic drink to improve hydration and restrict intake and take a Milk Thistle supplement over the festive season to support your liver detox function. • It’s just too easy to pop chocolates in your mouth without thinking. Keep them out of reach and buy chocolates in wrappers. Keep used wrapper evidence in a pile in front of you and I promise you will eat less!

International triumph

blood brothers returns to Malvern Theatres Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Blood Brothers will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 29th January to Saturday 2nd February. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
