WEIGHT LOSS Weight loss - a different approach by Stephen Husbands There are so many different ways of losing weight - counting calories, alternating carbohydrate and protein meals, avoiding processed foods and refined carbohydrates, extra hydration and exercise, and so on. Having run weight management clinics over the years, I have come to understand that most people know exactly what needs to be done, but sometimes struggle with the motivation, willpower, determination and focus. The key to successful weight loss really is in the mind. Hypnotherapy can bring down stress levels and bring out the positive qualities required to make successful weight loss happen. LANGUAGE FOR FUN Success of language classes in Malvern and nationwide It's that New Year's Resolution time of year when we all try to think of ways to improve our lives. Giving yourself a focus, exercising your brain, meeting people and having fun are all things which can give you a lift in all sorts of ways, and these are all things which you can get from learning a language - if it is taught the right way. "Enjoying the learning process is just as important for continued motivation as the results of the learning," says Mary Middleton of Language for Fun Malvern. "Many of our learners have previously dropped out of other language classes, but with us they have remained motivated and are coming back for more this term." She and Dee Vincent have been teaching languages in Malvern since September and haven't looked back. It's a double celebration of success for the Malvern mums as they celebrate the great fun and great achievements of their learners in their first term, as well as the 10th birthday of the organisation they teach with Language for Fun. "We were quite nervous before we started, not knowing if we would attract enough learners, but it's gone so well we're starting more new classes this term!" They put their success largely down to the methodology devised by company founder, Jessica Bonnard. "It's all about having fun while you learn. People learn more when they're relaxed and enjoying themselves practice real, relevant conversations in every class in a stress-free way." The method was devised by Jessica Bonnard when she founded Language for Fun 10 years ago in Newcastle-under-Lyme. She decided something needed to be done about the dull and sometimes scary way that languages were so often taught in adult education. After perfecting her method and creating materials for various levels, she started to license other teachers to use her method and there are now 70 teachers around the country teaching French, Spanish and Italian with Language for Fun. Locally, French and Spanish are on offer in Malvern, details can be found at www.languageforfun.org

All About...
the community shop A share scheme is being put together which will fund plans for a new Community Village Shop in Lower Broadheath. The shop is due to open next to The Bell Inn in the village in a few months time. Jessica Ronan is one of the committee making it happen and tells us the latest.
How did the plan start? Lower Broadheath’s shop and post office, on the main road through the village, closed in May last year. Straight away, local businesses missed the post office for banking and postal services. Older residents and those who don’t drive also missed the convenience of being able to pop in to buy a pint of milk and other items. As a result of this, a couple of people from the village put out a survey and held a meeting. It was decided the best way forward was to set up a community benefit society to set up and run a community shop. We decided the community-led model was best as we’ve seen it work in Alfrick, where the community shop has been very successful.
How are the plans progressing? In January we were granted planning approval for a temporary shop. Our application received approval from more than 70 residents which was very heartening. The temporary shop will stand in the grounds of The Bell Inn. It will have its own entrance and space for parking. It’s a central location and the permission and lease will last for five years. We’re now talking to the post office to open a local branch in the new shop. The plan is for the shop to have a paid manager who works parttime. They will be supported by between 50 and 60 volunteers, who will take it turn to work short shifts. In the longer term, we will continue to raise funds and ultimately we plan to have a permanent building somewhere in the village, in the next three to five years.
What’s the timescale? Currently, it looks as though the shop should be open by the middle of this year. Originally we hoped to open in the spring, but if we wait a few weeks longer, we are able to apply for further funding that will significantly boost our fundraising. We are being pointed towards sources of funding by The Plunkett Foundation, a charity that supports rural communities. We have a share scheme, which allows individuals to get involved. Anybody who buys shares, whether it’s one or a hundred, gets a vote on decisions about the shop. Anybody over 16 years old can buy a share.
How can people get involved? Volunteers are very welcome, we really will need as much help as possible as we move towards the opening of the shop. As well as the upcoming share offer, we have a Just Giving page if people would like to donate money. If you’d like to find out more, our next public meeting takes place on Wednesday 21st March, starting 8pm at Lower Broadheath Village Hall. You’ll find updates on our facebook and Twitter accounts, or visit www.lowerbroadheathshop.com

Music Feature
Local Talent:
howard james kenny Howard James Kenny takes acoustic music to a new level. An accomplished guitarist and singer, he uses looping to create a progressive sound that stands out, whether he’s recording or performing live. Lately, things have been quiet for him musically, but that might be about to change after taking part in last autumn’s Worcester Music Festival.
By Dave Webber
Does it take you a long time to write songs? I forget the exact timeline, but all the songs on my album, Shelter Songs, were written in quite a small period of time in 2010. I detuned my guitar to a pretty strange tuning to see what opportunities it would open up from a chordal perspective, as I was getting bored of standard and open tunings, and then the basic song structure for Good Fortune and My Wrongs were written pretty quickly and organically as a result. Soon after, I went up to the barn I practise in and started experimenting with the loop function on my delay pedal and got lost layering up guitar and vocal parts using the various different effects pedals I’ve got. When it came to recording, I didn’t change much, other than adding the odd bit of piano and percussion here and there to keep it interesting.
How did it all begin for you? I suppose I’ve always been relatively musical. I tried trumpet when I was about 12, but I couldn’t get on with it. I ended up with a guitar, as they were advised it would be a better start for me, but I soon got to learn the drums too. I spent some time at the Birmingham Conservatoire which was a real learning curve for an acoustic guitarist, but it was incredibly beneficial and since then I’ve formed and joined a number of bands which have helped me learn about songwriting.
Is there anybody in particular who has helped you along the way? Countless people. Most notably, my parents with all their support. On top of that, Haydn Britland at Northern Music Company. He’s worked with everyone from Opeth to Oceansize to Paradise Lost. He was given my album by a sound guy
20
that did my sound at 2000 Trees and apparently missed his train stop whilst listening to my album (which I think is a compliment of sorts!). Thanks to him, I wound up touring Europe with Maybeshewill and the UK with Dave McPherson (InMe) and then The Pineapple Thief.
Looking back over 2017, how was the year for you? I haven’t done solo work for quite a few years really. It was only when the excellent Jenny Hallam asked me if I’d support her that I picked it up again, so there’s not been a lot of activity in the past year. Playing outside the Guildhall for Worcester Music Festival was really enjoyable. I’ve never seen the people of the High Street so quiet.
Looking ahead, do you have any plans or hopes this year? Finally get around to writing the difficult second You can find Howard James Kenny on Facebook and Youtube or visit howardjameskenny.bandcamp.com www.exuberanthealth.co.uk

All About...
redpoint climbing The Redpoint Climbing Centre in Worcester has 1,500 square metres of bouldering and climbing walls to get your hands on. From complete beginners to veteran climbers, there’s something for everyone. Craig Wilkinson who’s the manager of the centre tells us more.
How and when did Redpoint open? We threw open our doors on 4th July last year after a mammoth job getting things ready. The space we used was at one time a pencil factory and we spent a lot of time giving it a really good clean! After the basic building was in place, a company called Walltopia arrived and constructed the climbing space. They are one of the world’s best designers and builders of climbing walls. What they created is amazing. It’s a top-spec third generation climbing wall, the best that’s currently available. There’s 500 square metres of bouldering space and 1,000 square metres of wall for roped climbing.
What sorts of people use Redpoint? I can honestly say everyone, starting from the youngest at 3 years old to those who are retired. We cater for every ability, so if you’ve never climbed you can book a session where an instructor will give you a chance to try it out. If you enjoy that, you can join one of our climbing courses, progress your skills and eventually climb independently.
What about more experienced climbers, or those returning to it later in life? Our walls have routes Graded from 3 up to 8a so there is something for most abilities. We constantly create new routes by changing the holds on the wall. Our route setting team works on a new section of wall every week so you’ll always find a new challenge. You can climb toproped or with a lead climber using protection on the way up. Among the people using Redpoint are Natasha Allock, a high ranking female climber in the UK, and a young GB climber Sammy Oakes who is ranked among the world’s best climbers.

What do you have for younger climbers? Three times a week on a Monday, Thursday and Friday, there’s an after-school climbing club between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. On Saturday and Sunday we have Rock Monkeys between 10.30am and 12.30pm which is open to all ages between 3 and 17 years old. On Sundays it’s the chance for younger climbers aged between 3 and 5 years to come to Mini Monkeys between 10.30am and 11.30am. They’re learning new skills, mingling with others and gaining confidence in all sorts of ways – it's great to see them develop. We are regularly visited by schools and scout groups who use our facilities and you can book children’s birthday parties here – we even had one party with 60 guests!
How do we find out more? Give us a call if you’re interested in climbing on (01905) 350346. We’re open from 10am until 10pm during the week and between 10am and 6pm at weekends. You’ll find us on Midland Road, between Shrub Hill station and the Worcester Sauce factory.

Local Group
flower arranging Worcester Floral Arrangement Society has been celebrating its 60th anniversary. Its members regularly enter (and win!) high level competitions and decorate churches, cathedrals and abbeys. One of its members, Barbara Parker, tells us more. Some of the many big shows we compete at include the Three Counties, The Spring and Autumn Shows and National and Area Days. Our talented members win numerous awards including many first prizes! We have also taken part in decorating everything from St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey in London, to local cathedrals, abbeys and churches. We have provided arrangements at the Guildhall in Worcester for the Mayor’s banquets and charity dinners over the years. Members of the public may well have been impressed by the standard of the glorious arrangements we created, maybe some of them found ‘Lonely Bouquets’, left in various places to be taken home, which help to promote Flower Clubs everywhere. Each year we hold an Open Evening, when a Christmas demonstration raises money for charities. This year the Midlands Air Ambulance received £1,000. We travel far and wide on holidays incorporating visits to gardens including Versailles, Monet's Garden in Givenchy, St Petersburg, Cordoba and Genoa.
In 2000 a Junior Club was started where boys and girls enjoy being shown designs which they then interpret with input of their own. They have been extremely successful by competing at the Spring and Autumn shows at Malvern, Area and National Days as well as doing floral designs for festivals including Westminster Abbey. We are a friendly "bunch" and warmly welcome new members at our meetings which take place on the first Friday of each month at Hallow Village Hall. Starting at 7.30pm, we watch the best Area and National demonstrators create stunning, diverse designs for our entertainment, which one of us will win in a raffle (at only £1 a ticket!).
Everyone is welcome so come and join us for fun and friendship through flowers. If you’re interested, please contact Helen Cook on (01886) 821784 or by email helencook@hotmail.co.uk

Recipe
Meg's leek & stilton Tart New Year Resolutions; Number one - waste less, use up what I have in the fridge Number two - go wholegrain, it’s really tasty, satisfying and better for you Number three - follow food the seasons have to offer, it tastes better, costs less and keeps you in touch with the world around you. And so, a really tasty, comforting, seasonal recipe that meets all of these goals in one dish!
lightly gather together, cover and chill for at least 30 minutes.
This pastry is made easily with the help of a food processor, but can also be made by hand, just try to keep everything as cool as possible.
Roll the pastry to fit your flan tin. The pastry is a little fragile, but bear with it! Keep it a little thicker and remember to ‘tamp’ down the bottom of the case working out to the sides, trimming the edges last of all. Fork the bottom of the case (about 8 fork points will do!). Return the case to the fridge to rest for another 30 minutes. Pre-heat the oven to 170°C.
Whizz the flour, butter and salt until it looks like crumbs. This is better done by ‘pulsing’ the processor as it is important not to over-work the pastry. Add cold water to bring the pastry together (about 6-8 tbsp), tip onto a bench and
Ingredients Makes a 23cm, 9” tart 200g Stoneground Wholemeal flour 100g Cold butter, cubed Pinch salt Cold Water 4-6 leeks washed, chopped and sautéed in a little butter 150g stilton (or other blue cheese) 4 large eggs 150ml single cream a splash of milk

Bake the pastry case for 15-20 minutes, remove from the oven and brush all over with a beaten egg. Return to the oven for another five minutes. This will help to ‘waterproof’ the pastry case and prevent a ‘soggy bottom’. Fill the case with the sautéed leeks and crumble stilton cheese over the top. Scrunch over freshly ground black pepper. Pour over the egg and cream mixture (3 eggs plus the egg leftover from the egg wash). You may need a splash of milk to top up the filling. Return to the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until beautifully golden, risen and firm. Serve with a fresh leaf salad, look out for peppery winter leaves, they are delicious with a dish like this.

Heritage
villainous victorians! Tudor House Museum, situated in the heart of the oldest street in Worcester, has a series of special activities during half-term in February, as part of the Love Worcester Heritage Festival. On selected days between 14th and 25th February, there will be the chance to learn about wicked Victorians and their villainous ways! Expect plenty of inspiration and activities for children based around the bad habits and naughty deeds of our ancestors. Over the weekend of 17th and 18th February, there’s a Living History weekend which will see ragged Victorians take over the museum! After record visitor numbers last year, several events for 2018 are planned, including living history weekends, victorian theatre and hidden spaces tours. Also in 2018, the Lost Story project will gather pace, opening more of the building to the public, restoring a rare example of a 16th Century embossed ceiling and carrying out archaeological investigations into the site. It will also bring to light the lost story of the weaving families who lived and worked here from the early 1500s - how they lived, their working conditions and what Worcester was like at that time.
The museum was honoured with the Judges Award for Excellence at the Volunteer Awards in September last year. Volunteers help visitors discover the history of the house and to raise money to keep this independent museum open and free to the public. If you’re interested in helping out, please contact Tonia Collett, manager via (01905) 612309 or manager@tudorhouse.org.uk Tudor House Museum is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday between 10am and 4pm, with the coffee shop taking last orders at 3.30pm. www.tudorhouse.org.uk

Theatre News THE LITTLE
matchgirl AND OTHER HAPPIER TALES
LITTLE MATCHGIRL Win a family ticket (4) to this show at Malvern Theatres on Friday 23rd March at 7pm.
From the story by Hans Christian Andersen and Other Storytellers
Please answer the following question:
Emma Rice’s exquisite (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Malvern following its critically acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe.
The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales are adapted from the stories written by which Danish author?
Struggling to keep warm on the freezing winter streets, our impoverished heroine begins to strike her dwindling stock of matches. Each match she strikes conjures a new story and while it burns she escapes into an enchanting world of magic and mystery. Inspired by the beautiful Hans Christian Andersen tales, we follow her through the spell-binding stories of The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina. For adults and brave children alike this will be a truly remarkable theatre experience, full of music, laughter, puppetry and magic. Recommended age: 8+ The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th March. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk.
