Welcome to the April edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

We’ve reached a small, but significant milestone for the magazine, as this month we’ve expanded by eight pages. That’s because more local businesses than ever want to place an advert with us, but what it also means is that we’ll be able to offer more local stories and information each month. One of those new pages is written by Rob Weale of Smith-Weale Associates who lives in Colwall. Rob’s a financial adviser and will bring us regular information about financial planning. You can read more on Page 6. We’re always keen to hear about local events, initiatves and the stories of amazing people living in our part of the world, so if there’s something you’d like to see in print, please get in touch. Of course the extra pages will also have some more adverts, and I do urge readers to keep the magazine handy to refer to throughout the month. Just such a thing helped me after my car broke down, and I’d like to thank Forward Motors in Malvern link (Page 36) who helped me out at short notice and got my car going again! Thank goodness the winter’s over. Have a lovely April!

Pension Shake Up by Rob Weale from Colwall From April 2011, UK pensioners will no longer have to use personal pension pots to buy annuities and will now have far greater choice and control of how to take their pensions, dependent on their individual circumstances. It is one of the biggest shake ups of UK pensions in 35 years. Changes to UK Annuity Purchase Rules in 2011 Under current regulations, pensioners have no choice but to convert personal pensions into annuities which provides a defined income for life. Under the new annuity purchase rules, however, the compulsory element will be scrapped. From April 2011, consumers will be given more flexibility in how they choose to use their retirement savings. They can, for example, still convert to annuities if they wish, but will also be given more options such as income drawdown and continued pension investment. There are also new tax advantages worth exploring. Annuities An annuity is affectively a ‘promise to pay’ from an insurance company, whereby you will give them your pension pot and they will give you an income for the remainder of your life. This income level will be determined by a number of factors, age, gender (although this will not be a factor from December 2012), health, and then other options, for example indexation, spouses benefit and guaranteed periods. Often labelled unfair for a number of reasons, not least because a pensioner dying soon after buying one loses most of their life savings to the annuity provider. Another negative factor is that annuities are at an historic low, a £100,000 pension pot buys an annual income of just £5000pa compared to £10,000 in 1995, meaning you must live at least 20 years to receive your pension pot back. What are the Income Drawdown Pension Rules? Although consumers will not be forced to annuitise pension savings from 2011 and could, as an alternative, drawdown income as cash lump sums, there are still rules to be followed. These have been set into place to try and avoid people running out of retirement income and becoming dependent on
state benefits. High earners and those on company pension schemes may be given more flexibility under the new rules. Who Will Benefit From the 2011 Changes to Annuity Purchase Rules? Although many people will be pleased not to have to buy an annuity, the benefits of the new system seem to be loaded towards higher earners. True flexibility under the changed rules will only be given to those who meet the minimum income regulation. They can then choose how to drawdown their personal pensions. Those that cannot meet this limit may be freed from the commitment of buying an annuity but may not see much change to income levels in retirement. Their drawdown will be limited to the same kinds of rates that they would be paid by an annuity, depending on the value of their pension pot. They may, however, be able to benefit from investing for longer, have greater investment choice, take ad-hoc payments, changes also give more flexibility to those that do wish to buy an annuity but that want to choose when they do so to try and wait for rises in income rates. Will UK Pensioners Continue to Buy Annuities as a Source of Retirement Income? What is important, is that proper advice is sought from an Independent specialist, an annuity should always be purchased after comparing the ‘whole of market’, as huge variants can exist in what your current pension provider offers, and the open market. Every policy holder has the right to shop around. With regard the drawdown route, again, an independent specialist will be able to help assess whether a drawdown is suitable, and if so recommend a provider and mange your pension going forward.
Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. We can help make the critical decisions, manage your pension both pre and post retirement, and choose the very best solution tailored to your individual circumstances from the whole of the UK market place. Get into Sports With the days getting longer and temperature beginning to warm up, all sorts of outdoor activities are being planned in our part of the world this spring. Below we have a selection of several local sports clubs with details on what’s going on. CRICKET Colwall Cricket Club is a great place for all abilities of player, some of whom come from as far away as Australia! The club’s just welcomed Alex Frick for this season, who plays for South Australia’s Under 19s team, and has even appeared on an Australian tv show ‘Australia’s next cricket superstar’. The First & Second teams play in the Worcestershire County League, the Third & Fourth teams play in Herefordshire while the ladies compete in the Gloucestershire Ladies Twenty Twenty competition. The junior teams welcome boys and girls ranging in age from the Under 10s to the Under 17s. For the less serious and more social player, the Colwall League of Gentlemen, otherwise known as the CLOGS XI, meets on Tuesday evening. Sunday 17th April has been named as the official opening of the season for the club when they’ll be opening their new nets and enjoying a tournament involving all sections of the club. They’re particularly proud of their new nets which they describe as ‘the best for miles’. New members of the club are always welcome, whether its to play in one of the teams or to join as a social member. For more information visit http://colwall.play-cricket.com West Malvern Cricket Club has been busy preparing its ground for the new season. Today, the peaceful setting belies the hard work over the past 25 years that’s gone in to making this one of the most beautiful grounds in the area. After its origins as a pub team, the club played at many different locations locally before leasing a field from Mathon Court, which sits next door. Today, the club’s Chairman Bob Blackbourn describes the setting as ‘idyllic’. The Club has three teams playing in local leagues this season, two of which meet on a Saturday, the other on a Sunday. The ground is used by Cradley Sports Club for Junior Cricket every Wednesday. There are around fifty playing members with a good number of social members as well. During the winter, players have been practising indoors, using facilities at The Royal Grammar School in Worcester. Its renowned as a welcoming club and welcomes new
members if you’re interested in joining. The season for West Malvern begins in earnest on 30th April when the First XI team will take on Aston Bank, but the Sunday XI will be playing before that. The end of the season will see a tour of Cornwall and a memorial match for Trevor Marston, the former landlord of the Brewers Arms in West Malvern, where the cricket club started as a pub team many years ago. That takes place on Sunday 11th September. For more information call the club Secretary Dave Cantrell on 01684 572764.
FOOTBALL & ROUNDERS Cradley Sports Club is looking for people who’d like to play rounders. There’s a Rounders League in Herefordshire, and the club wants to put together an adult team to take part. Ideally they need someone to step forward and organise games, with the assurance the club will fully support them with the work involved. In the meantime the junior football continues to go from strength to strength and after Easter its popular ‘Football is Fun’ sessions begin again. Its the third season for the programme which offers coaching and games on Sunday mornings for children aged five and above. The Club caters for young people up to the age of 14, and runs teams for all ages. Their girls’ team was particularly successful but that stopped once the members all grew up, the club is particularly keen to re-start a girls’ team if there’s enough interest. The current season closes with a presentation ceremony in July when the children are presented with medals and prizes. The club is currently looking for boys who can play in its under-10 side when the new season begins in September, so if you ‘re interested then please call 01886 880081 or take a look at www.cradleysportsclub.co.uk
this Spring CYCLING ‘Come Cycling Ledbury’ is an initiative set up by local cycling enthusiasts to help us all get out and enjoy some beautiful routes around our immediate area this summer. The trails centre on Ledbury and take in countryside within a radius of ten miles around the town. ‘Its a fantastic area to cycle in’ says Bella Johnson who’s helped to set it up. ‘Compared to other parts of the UK there’s very little traffic on our country lanes, as soon as you’re off the main road there’s a huge network of back roads with practically no traffic’. There are maps and suggested routes on the group’s website to give you plenty of ideas of where to go and what to see. The Tourist Information offices in Malvern and the new centre at the Ice Bytes cafe in Ledbury both have information as well. Bella’s favourite route is the ‘Ledbury Loop’ which takes cyclists south to Dymock, returning via Eastnor. On the way you’ll be able to stop off at the local pub in Dymock, which is now run by the local community, and cycle parts of the National Byway, a 4,000 mile route around Britain which happens to pass by our doorstep. ‘Come Cycling Ledbury’ will be publicised well beyond our area, with the intention of attracting cyclists from other parts of Britain and even abroad to come here and experience what we might take for granted. As well as the published routes, the local Cycle Forum also organises occasional cycling days out including popular rides during the ‘Big Apple’ weekend events later in the year. For more information pop into a local Tourist Information Centre or take a look at www.ComeCyclingLedbury.com
TENNIS Mathon, Cradley and Storridge Tennis Club, otherwise known as MCS, sits in a beautiful location in open countryside at the bottom of Harcourt Road, between West Malvern and Mathon. They’ve been busy tidying up the three all-weather courts for the new season and all three surfaces will be repainted as soon as the weather improves. The play doesn’t stop in winter, as floodlights on two of the courts facilitate play all-year-round. The Club began life in the 1980s, set up by an enthusiastic group of players from the villages of Mathon, Cradley and Storridge. Today it is thriving, with around 90 members, some of whom come from as far away as Evesham and Upton Bishop. The arrival of a new coach this winter has enabled the Club to offer individual or group coaching to members of all standards. The Club enters men’s, women’s and mixed teams in local leagues run by the LTA. For a more leisurely game the Club holds weekly social tennis sessions on Sunday mornings from 9.30 a.m. In addition during the summer there are often social tennis sessions on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Furthermore, members are free to arrange their own games with other members, or to improve their play by hitting against the practice wall. The club is proud to describe itself as welcoming to players of any ability and new members will always find players of a similar standard. For more details please call the Membership Secretary, Mrs Pat Pugh, on 01531 640682.

Déjà Vu offers the chance to create a unique look. For women there's a contemporary mix of clothes from major labels like Paul Smith, Caroline Charles, Max Mara, Escada and Alberta Ferretti. Honey!
By Allison Maxwell from Colwall
Nature’s Nectar of Nutrients
During a recent walk along Brockhill Road between West Malvern and Colwall, I struck up a conversation with a bee keeper tending to her bees. She was covering the hives with carpet to keep the bees warm and feeding them with a sugar syrup to keep them alive until spring arrives. Apparently last year she lost a whole hive and wasn’t taking any chances this year. I learnt a lot in that conversation, how the bee populations in the UK are declining and how essential bees are in the pollination of many flowering plants.
Health Benefits of Honey Raw honey is one of nature’s richest super foods, containing over eighty different health-giving properties because of its unprocessed nature. Pure, unheated and unprocessed honey embodies the natural bouquet of wild flower pollination and is a potent source of natural enzymes and healing elements. Truly raw honey is pure and creamy, smooth with fine textured crystals that stores indefinitely and improves with age. It is a great alternative sweetener because it enters the blood slowly, therefore maintaining a balanced stream of energy.
Decline in bee population According to the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, three of Britain’s twenty five species of bumblebees are already extinct and half of the remainder have shown serious declines, often up to 70%, since the 1970s. They believe part of the problem has been the intensive use of pesticides, some since banned, that has had an impact on the British Bee population. We gardeners, often unwittingly, do a fair bit to help bees. But if we all do a touch more, our collective impact may well help tip the balance back in their favour. There are key ways we can tempt them in and increase their numbers. The common belief is that bees enjoy plants from the blues, yellows and white spectrum. Apparently, bees cannot see red: a poppy looks black to them. Bees find double flowers difficult to work, they simply cannot get to the nectars because of the mass of petals. So choose plants as close to the natural species as possible and add early flowering plants. This will help the early bees who venture out when temperatures are still chilly, allowing them to gain vital sustenance. For this reason, the snowdrops and crocuses of the past two months are very valuable to bees.

Hill Management Skylark
By Helen Stace As former Lead Conservation Officer with English Nature, Helen has worked with the Conservators, and the Malvern Hills AONB, since her arrival in the village of Colwall 17 years ago and has a wealth of experience in conservation management. She is now a newly elected Conservator.
In the run up to the election, many people asked her why the Conservators are cutting down trees, so here are her answers to help everyone understand the issue. “Most of the tree cutting is being done to look after the wildlife. The most special wildlife habitat on the hills is the short, dry, open textured grassland of the upper ridges. This supports tiny spring flowers (which flower and set seed before the grass dries out), lichens, fungi, butterflies, and birds such as skylarks. In nature, grassland changes over time. On the Malverns the natural succession is from open grassland, to dense grassland or bracken and then via bramble or gorse patches to scrub and eventually woodland. This was fine when there were extensive tracts of wild land nearby, going through change at different paces, to produce a mosaic of habitats where there would always be somewhere for the flowers, butterflies and birds to live. However, many wildlife areas are now isolated within intensively farmed or developed land, so plants and animals can no longer move between them. This means that we must look after our wildlife where it is found now, often by stopping or reversing natural succession. On the Malverns, photographic records show that trees have spread inexorably up the hills,

especially since the commoners stopped using their grazing rights. Without active control, trees could close over the ridges within a few years, blanketing out the grasslands and the wildlife they support, as well as the lovely views we all appreciate. So, the Conservators are trying to protect the wildlife by pushing the trees and scrub back to the 1990 levels. This is quite a challenge, and involves reintroducing grazing and managing the bracken and gorse as well as cutting back scrub and trees. An added complication is that the encroaching trees are mainly sycamore. This is not a native tree and so our natural habitats are not adapted to cope with it. Our natural woodland trees cast dappled shade under which primroses, bluebells, hazel and other woodland plants and shrubs can thrive. Sycamore casts very dense shade and its fallen leaves do not decay, so very little survives below. Also, very few of our native animals eat the seeds, so once it has taken hold it spreads very rapidly.” If you want to learn more, why not join Helen for a guided walk at 3pm on Sunday 10th April, starting from the Car park at Gardiners Quarry.

Green Fingers by Bridget Evans of Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall Did you know that the year 2010 was the International Year of Biodiversity? We are all an integral part of nature and ultimately our fate is tightly linked with biodiversity, the huge variety of animals and plants, the places they live and their surroundings all over the world. When you consider this fact its amazing how many of us might not even have known it happened! Most of the people I have spoken to, other than those working in areas of conservation, have had little or no idea. We rely on this diversity of life to provide us with the food, fuel, medicines and other essentials we cannot live without. Yet this rich diversity is being lost at a greatly accelerated rate because of the actions of human beings. The decline of bee populations, highlighted by the media, has been a wake-up call which thankfully has reached most people. The interest has stemmed partly from the devastating effect the lack of pollinating bees would have on a huge range of food crops around the world. This would cause widespread food shortages as well as destroying

the agricultural economy. How ironic that such a little insect can dictate the whole future of our food. What better example could we have to bring home the fragility of our world and the way we all have to respect each and every creature? With this in mind why not put away all those garden chemicals this year, throw away the slug pellets and pesticides and give the creatures in your garden a year of abundant biodiversity! I have been growing all types of plants Organically for the past thirty years, my nursery is a haven for wildlife and I can honestly say I rarely get any pest or disease problems on my plants. Once you have stopped using chemicals for a couple of seasons you will find that a natural balance occurs, encouraging beneficial insects and wildlife into the garden that will keep the numbers of pests to a minimum. Do take a look on the news page of my website, www.cavesfolly.com where I’ve added a list of all the wonderful creatures that we are privileged to share our special little corner of the world with. Enjoy the spring sunshine

All About... ...Eastnor Bowling Club
Colin Billingham is the President of Eastnor Bowling Club, which later this month is holding an Open Afternoon. Everybody is welcome to come and learn more about the club, which is keen to attract new members.
Tell us about your club
We were set up in 1930 and I would guess at that time the majority of members worked on the Eastnor Estate. When the war started in 1939 the green was dug up to plant crops. Six years later, at the end of the war, a work party of demobbed servicemen came from Ledbury to re-lay the green. The location, in the Deerpark next to Eastnor Castle is second to none, and as with all nice places the enjoyment of that never wears off.
Is it just a game for older people?
Not at all, we welcome everyone and have members ranging in age from early teens to their late eighties! You can start playing from around the age of 8 or 9, we see a lot who start around the age of 13 and play competitively. There’s no upper age limit and you can play on well into old age! We want to encourage younger players and so we hope this year’s open day will encourage new people to come along and try the sport for themselves.
who does your club compete against?
We have regular friendly matches organised with other clubs. Generally these take place in Herefordshire, Worcestershire or Gloucestershire. There are also League matches and there’s a local league in the Malvern area as well as a County League. We’re affiliated to the Herefordshire County Bowling Association, the Herefordshire Women’s Bowling Association, and Bowls England is our governing body.
w hat do you love about it? For me it’s about the companionship,
although obviously as a sport I also enjoy the challenge and everyone goes out to win. A lot of bowlers would say ‘It’s not a sport, it’s a disease!’ which is to say that once you’ve got the bug you’re hooked. Within a short period of starting many people just can’t get enough, because it’s a skilful game and it takes a bit of learning to become really skilful. You have to learn it, there aren’t a lot of naturals around, you have to master it and it’s quite a challenge.
what do you say to people T ell us about the Open Day thinking of trying it? For as long as I can remember we’ve held the event and in recent years we’ve used it to get new members involved. This year its being held on the first day of the season, 17th April, we’ll be set up and open from 2.30pm. Its a chance for people to try it and if they decide to join us, we’re offering the first year’s membership for free. It’s the first time we’ve done this but we hope people will like it and stay.
Bowls is a game that’s not too expensive, if you compare the average membership of some other sports clubs. The season starts in April and continues through to the end of September. Out of season, through the winter, a lot of players then play indoors using facilities like that in Malvern. In that way, this is a sport you can enjoy year round. The Open Day takes place on Sunday 17th April, starting at 2.30pm. The club is located in Ledbury’s Deer Park, if you’re turning up on the day please call ahead to the Club House on 01531 634530 for directions. If you’d like more details beforehand please contact the Club Captain Mrs Rose Owen on mention 01531 633010 or Cynthia Brookes 01684 891235. 32 Please All About Magazines when on responding to adverts

Well Dressing 2011 The theme of this year’s Well Dressing Festival is ‘Togetherness’ which ties nicely into the Royal Wedding happening on the same weekend. Around forty local springs will be decorated across the hills, which the organisers say makes theirs the biggest event of its kind in Britain. ‘Of course Derbyshire is well known for its well dressing traditions’ says Lionel Shorstone from the Malvern Spa Association, ‘and we enjoy some friendly rivalry with them about who puts on the best show!’ Since the royal couple have chosen Well Dressing Day to get married, the decorations will be put up on Thursday 28th April. They will remain in place until the evening of Tuesday 3rd May and during the bank holiday weekend there will be a full programme of events. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend is a donkey pilgrimage to St Ann’s Well, a reminder of how visitors to Malvern travelled around the hills in days gone by. There will also be guided tours to various sites both on foot and by minibus. Water blessing ceremonies are planned with the druidic ceremony taking place at Hayslad Spout on Monday
2010 Barbara Meddows' dressing of Earl Beauchamp's Spout
2nd May at 3pm. ‘The popularity of our festival seems to be growing’ says Lionel. ‘This year we’ve had a lot of enquiries from travel clubs and others interested in coming to see what we do’. Sponsored Walks Saturday 21 May
Saturday 25 June
The Malvern Hills Walk for St Richard’s Hospice offers the chance to enjoy a good day out and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in the event on Saturday 21st May with routes of 2 miles, 5 miles and 11 miles depending on your fitness. There’s no entry fee but participants are asked to donate their sponsorship money to St Richard’s. Last year more than 500 people helped to raise more than £22,000 towards the work of the hospice, which helps patients and their families who face cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. There is a choice of walks depending on your fitness levels and a great sense of camaraderie. Individuals, families, and groups are all welcome, there will be catering on hand and first aiders will be in attendance to support the walkers. For more information call 01905 763963 or you can download a registration form at www.strichards.org.uk/malvernwalk
On 25th June a one day walking event takes place in support of the NSPCC and Childline. Starting at Colwall Village Hall, walkers will cover 21 miles of local countryside around the hills over the course of a day. It’s the third time the challenge has taken place, and each time the route changes so that anybody who’s taken part in the past will face a new challenge this time around. Its a popular event. Last year three hundred walkers took part, helping to raise over £30,000. The event doesn’t just rely on people walking, last time a team of a hundred volunteers helped make sure the day passed off successfully, and so if you can help, the organisers would like to hear from you. For more details call the ChildLine/NSPCC fundraising office on 0844 892 0217. There’s more information at www.nspcc.org.uk
