Annual Shows are a tradition in this area, and this year it seems as though almost every town and village is having one! From West Malvern to Ledbury, Cradley and Colwall, there will be flowers, giant vegetables, jam, cakes and crafts on display which have been lovingly grown or made by local people. Cream teas and cake will be served and there’s plenty of categories to browse before prizes are awarded. Everybody is encouraged to take part, you don’t have to be an expert! The shows themselves are always worth a visit, if you keep reading you’ll find details of one that’s happening near you. Have a great summer!

Advice

lpa...a ticking time bomb! By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall

i

wrote some time ago that with pension freedom comes responsibility and if I ever needed an example of this it’s right here. A potential ‘later life financial crisis’ for four in five retirees who manage their own retirement savings has been identified, as no Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) has been set up. It’s estimated hundreds of thousands of retirees using pension drawdown to fund their retirement have not set up an LPA so that a friend or family member has the legal authority to make decisions on their behalf if they no longer can. This simple but extremely important financial planning oversight could prevent an individual trusted by the retiree from immediately stepping in to help them manage their affairs should they suddenly fall ill or lose mental capacity. Without an LPA in place, even next of kin would be forced to apply to the courts to take charge of a relative’s finances, without guarantee of success.

with this should you not already have a solicitor relationship. They should be able to recommend a firm that can take care of this for you as well as talk to you about the reality of not having one in place. At the same time it would also be a good idea to review your will and other arrangements, particularly in light of the revised and much improved inheritance tax reforms.

It is worth remembering that simple transactions such making an income payment, taking a withdrawal, stopping payments or making changes to a portfolio to reflect the current retiree circumstance, cannot be done without an LPA in place. Additionally, there is no guarantee who will ultimately be appointed to manage the individual’s affairs, making the whole scenario very scary indeed. Twice as many people are now choosing pension drawdown over the traditional annuity, thus putting the entire responsibility of managing their own income in retirement on themselves, yet this fundamental part of the responsibility is being missed. A good solicitor will talk to you about the need for LPAs however, in my experience, even they can miss the relevance to pension drawdown products. The need for an LPA is as great as, some might argue even greater than, the need for a will. If you have a pension drawdown, or if you are thinking of one for the future, arrange an LPA, and remember a financial advisor can help you

Whether it’s a visit to a friend, the supermarket or a trip to the doctors, this friendly, caring service is there to help. With three cars on the road they are just around the corner from you. ‘It’s not just about driving, it’s also about companionship’ says Alastair Cameron, who runs the service in Malvern. ‘We aren’t carers, but we do take extra care of our customers. We don’t just drop them at the supermarket, we’ll assist them around the store and are happy to unpack the groceries when they are home again. If it’s a trip to the doctor, we can accompany them and even report back to a concerned son or daughter.’ As well as Alastair, the other drivers are Katherine and Bev. They are all first-aid trained and DBSchecked. ‘Some people specifically ask for a lady driver which is fine’ continues Alastair ‘and unlike using a taxi company, you’ll know who is coming to collect you.’ The company has an operator’s licence from the local authority and carries out other duties including school runs. They also carry out airport or cruise drop-off and pick-ups at any time, seven days a week. ‘Our catch phrase is ‘We’re family when family can’t be there’ says Alastair. ‘We run a reliable service and our pricing is very competitive - you’ll be surprised at how cost-effective our service can be.’ All journeys must be pre-booked. EDGE FITNESS & THERAPIES Personal training and therapies can help you improve your fitness and health and Shane Powell, owner and trainer of Edge Fitness and Therapies, always goes that extra mile to help you achieve your goal. Shane has successfully built up Edge Fitness and Therapies which is based on New Street in Ledbury over the past five years following a dynamic and successful career in personal training that’s taken him to the United States and Dubai helping many varied (and sometimes famous) clients. In recent years his work in Ledbury has grown to include help with pre- and post-operative care, sporting injuries, nutrition and weight loss. Shane says ‘Some of the people I help include those who want to improve their fitness but don’t like the idea of training in a busy gym. When people first arrive at Edge Fitness & Therapies they say: ‘I didn’t know you had all of this here in the centre of Ledbury.’ I have all the facilities needed to give tailored, one-to-one support that will help you achieve results.’

For Shane, the help doesn’t end after a visit. ‘Working on your health isn’t just about one hour in a day, the other 23 hours are just as important!’ he says. ‘I help people deal with choices around mealtimes, or if they’re going on holiday I create a personalised video workout they can complete every day while they are away. I make sure my clients can get through the difficult moments and keep their goals on course. I get great satisfaction in seeing somebody overcome an injury or lose a significant amount of weight. I am changing lives and it’s great to be a part of that.’ Shane holds exclusive one to one consultations and appointments six days a week, to talk with him without obligation call 07713 168694 or email shane@edgefitnessandtherapies.com

GET LOGS If you have an open fire or a wood burner, it could be time to start stocking up with fuel for the winter. Zena Hayes from Get Logs, based near Bosbury, tells us more about what they do. If you’re planning to order wood, there’s a few things to think about. Firstly, where does the wood come from? When we started ten years ago, we were cutting wood here on our farm, but as demand quickly increased we needed to find a new supply. We now work with Wessex Woodland Management, who specialise in the harvesting of timber for firewood production and who only harvest from sustainable woodlands which are replanted. The forest products industry works hard to maintain a low environmental impact. A report from the Forestry Commission concluded the replanting of trees was a practical way to tackle climate change, as young trees absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. All of the wood we supply is ready to burn. Around three years ago we installed a kiln, which allows us to dry out the wood. This proved to be really useful at the end of last winter, when people were calling us in a panic, asking us to deliver logs! We were able to quickly dry out more supplies and keep people warm! We split, dry and store the wood on our farm and we are registered with the Biomass Suppliers List. The wood we supply is only hardwood and the kind of wood varies, depending on what’s been cut.

We deliver a large area, up to 20 miles from our base near Bosbury, and there’s free delivery up to ten miles away

www.getlogs.co.uk

20

We supply three different lengths of log: and 8 inch log for smaller wood burners, a standard 10 inch log, and a 20 inch log for larger fires. These are popular with campsites and many local pubs and hotels, including the Colwall Park Hotel, The Green Dragon at Bishop’s Frome and The Bell at Bosbury. How to store your wood? Keep it dry! It’s delivered in bulk bags and you can leave it in these, as long as they are covered to keep the rain off. You could put up a log store and there is the option to buy one from our website (see below).

colwall rotary club The Rotary year commences on 1st July That brings changes, such as a new club President for the next year, Chris Mill.

However, one local Rotary club has been changing in more significant ways over the past year as we seek to move far away from the image of ‘men in grey suits eating in a hotel dining room’. We have returned to our original venue of The Colwall Park Hotel, where we met from 1986 until 2000. We also no longer eat at our meetings; this is to reduce the cost of membership and to make the club more attractive to potential members who may need to prepare meals for family before we meet. We also now meet fortnightly, rather than weekly. Rotary has been open to women members since 1995, but Colwall has been slow in attracting

women to our numbers. This has been resolved with our first ‘new to Rotary’ woman member, Sadie Skipworth. We are actively seeking more businesswomen to join us; Rotary was the first business networking club in the world, founded in 1905. Support

Crohn's & colitis local network More than 300,000 people in the UK have Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis and 1 in 4 of all newly diagnosed are under 16. Locally, there’s an active support group that’s holding a special event this September. Among the group’s members is Hayley Jones from Ledbury who was fifteen years old when the disease struck. ‘The worst thing being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis was being helpless. I just didn’t have any energy to do anything and had to rest a lot.’ Treatment for the condition varies and Hayley struggled for many years until the condition went into remission, thanks to a new course of medication. ‘I owe my health and wellbeing to my local GP in Ledbury and the Hereford Gastroenterology team. They have given me excellent care and treatment – without them, I wouldn’t be in remission and living a busy and exciting life. I can do all the things I like doing, going on holidays and a full-time job. After nine years, I am living a normal life again.’

Hayley

Hayley is among the supporters of the local network of Crohn’s and Colitis UK. They’ve raised money for the charity in all kinds of ways, from sponsored walks to social events. ‘I have enjoyed the last five years, meeting new people and raising money and awareness for a charity I feel so passionately about. Crohn’s and Colitis UK is a fantastic organisation, always making positive impacts for people and helping support the family and friends of people who have been diagnosed.’ In September, the local group is holding a Funday Sunday Fete to celebrate five years of fundraising and raising awareness. The day will have lots of things for all the family to do: different interactive stalls with old-fashioned games, information, live music and food. ‘This is the biggest event we have planned to date’ says Hayley, ‘and is focused on raising awareness and helping people in the area to network with us and with other people.’ Anyone can come along and it is free.

Funday Sunday, organised by the Crohn’s and Colitis Hereford Network, takes place at Bartestree Village Hall (between Ledbury and Hereford) on Sunday 9th September, between 11am and 4pm. If you’d like more information on the local group, you can contact Herefordshire@ networks.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk; or the helpline service 0300 222 5700. www.crohnsandcolitis.org.uk

Recipe

Ingredients

cookies

Pre heat the oven to 190Celcius (375 F/Gas Mark 6) Method 1. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Then add the egg yolk and mix well, add the flour, salt and vanilla extract 3. Add the 80g/100g of the ’optional extras’ and mix it until it forms a sticky dough 5. Turn on to a floured surface or a piece of cling film and roll into a sausage shape, the size of the sausage depends how big you want your cookies (they do spread when baked). Wrap in cling film and leave in the freezer for at least 1 hour. 7. Take the dough out of the freezer, remove clingfilm and using a sharp knife slice it as thick as you like and put the slices on a baking sheet spaced quite far apart. The dough can be stored in the freezer until needed so you bake a batch any time you need to bake cookies .... 8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15/20 mins depending on your chosen size. 9. Leave to cool completely then spread, drizzle or sprinkle with icing, chocolate ... whatever and however you feel. I used dark chocolate chips, crumbled pecan nuts and sprinkle of icing sugar.

30

For the plain dough: 250g of soft butter 165g caster sugar 300g plain flour 1 egg yolk pinch of salt 2 tsp of vanilla extract (instead of vanilla essence add rind of lemon/lime)

This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a family friendly Deli Cafe serving local and artisan produce. You can find The Nest on the Hereford Road, a few miles outside Ledbury.

Optional extras Approx 80/100g of any of the following ... or be creative and imaginative Chocolate chips or grated chocolate any kind of dried fruit (if large roughly chopped) chopped nuts/seeds tiny marshmallows sugar cake decorations eg hundreds and thousands, dark chocolate chips and grated orange rind

ledbury events LEDBURY CARNIVAL Monday 27th August ‘Ledfest’ is the theme of this year’s Ledbury Carnival which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, 27th August. As usual there is plenty of entertainment and family fun through the day, with funfair attractions in the town centre as well as stalls to browse, food and drink plus entertainment on a dedicated stage. The carnival procession starts at Midday from Ledbury Rugby Club before winding its way through town. As usual there will be plenty of local groups taking part and samba band Samba Galêz will also be joining the procession this year. Live music next to the Market House is always a popular part of the day and this year music will be provided by many different groups including local covers band Frontrunner and Ledbury Community Brass Band. Now in its 44th year, the carnival regularly brings thousands of people into the town centre and is one of Ledbury’s most popular events. Its organised by a dedicated team who run the carnival committee, together with volunteers. Newcomers are always welcome and if you’re interested in helping, please take a look at the website below. On the day itself there’s lots more taking place which you can read about on The Ledbury Carnival facebook page, or pick up a brochure, copies of which are being left in pick up points around Ledbury. www.ledfest.co.uk

Ledbury Horticultural Society 2018 Annual Flower Show Monday 27th August

Doors open at Midday, prizegiving at 4.30pm Admission: 50 pence Ledbury Horticultural Society will be holding its annual Flower Show in the Community Hall on Carnival Day. Since 1999, the Society has donated over £10,000 to both local and national charities. This year’s chosen charities are Salters Hill who support people with learning disabilities and their families, and Ledbury in Bloom, part of the RHS Britain in Bloom Campaign. The success of the show very much depends on the support of those who take part by entering one or more classes for a bit of fun! Do you grow fruit or vegetables? Are you a keen photographer? Do you bake or enjoy handicrafts? Are the kids creative? If so, do look through the show schedule and put something on the showbench. There are a range of classes for everyone – no matter your ability. This is more than just a Flower Show, there is something for the whole family. If you do not wish to enter one of the many classes then just come along on the day and spend some time enjoying the various exhibits, not to mention the amazing cream teas and cakes! If you would like further information or a copy of the schedule, please contact Kelvin Lynch, Show Secretary on 07875 478484. Schedules are also available from Ledbury Hardware Store or Ledbury Newsagent in the Homend, Ledbury.

Gardening

green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget has been protecting the plants from the fierce summer sun The very cold winter and recent dry conditions caused by the heat have really tested the tolerance of many plants. The importance of wind breaks and shading, even in a small garden, are necessary to enable plants and wildlife to survive the extremes of climate. Hedges, trees or large shrubs and arbours covered with climbing plants are all good for creating shade in the garden. Windbreaks such as evergreen hedges (Escallonia, Ealeagnus, Privet) create both shelter from cold winds and shade in the summer. Mulching the ornamental and vegetable garden with soil conditioner or compost also helps retain moisture levels in summer. To help plants survive the cold, mulch with soil conditioner or bark chip in October to help trap the warmth in the soil. Many alpine plants are great survivors of extreme conditions and are good reliable plants in exposed and dry conditions. Plants such as Helianthemums, Sedums, Inula, Achillea, Erigeron, Campanula, Thymes, Saxifraga and Potentilla are all tough species. If you want to grow more tender drought lovers such as Agapanthus, Gazania or Salvias, plant them with a mix of gravel as well as compost to retain moisture in summer but drain freely in the winter. Jobs in the ornamental garden Use a range of defences against slugs and snails. Try half a grapefruit skin placed upside down on the soil or beer baited slug traps. Biological controls for slugs work well now in the warm soil. Take cuttings of tender perennials such as penstemon and salvias.

34

Thin out the oxygenating weed from ponds and keep blanket weed from getting too thick. Cut conifer hedges no later than end of August to prevent die back. Trim lavender bushes to dead-head and shape. Use vine weevil nematodes for pest control. Order bulbs for spring flowers. Keep Camellia and Rhododendrons well watered - now is the time they form flower buds for next spring. Kitchen garden Sow Parsley and salad crops to take you through to spring. Raise ripening pumpkins and squashes off the soil to prevent rotting. Plant new strawberries now, either as new plants or runners. Prune fruited canes of summer raspberries. Plant autumn onion sets. Dig up any remaining potatoes. Harvest, store, bottle and freeze as many vegetables and fruit as possible!

Gardening

All About...

wyche & colwall horticultural show The Annual Show of the Wyche and Colwall Horticultural Society celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Taking place in August, it has become a centrepiece of village life in Colwall. Helen Picton who is the show’s organiser tells us more.

When and how did the show start? The show began during the Second World War and was part of the Holidays at Home scheme which was a drive by the government to raise morale on the Home Front. It’s been held every year since then, except for in 2001 when it was cancelled because of the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease. The enduring success of the show is thanks to the support of local people. There are many people who do their bit from those volunteers that organise it, to the people who are busy growing and creating items for various show categories. Sadly, this year’s show will take place without Cynthia Bussey, who passed away recently. Cynthia attended the show since it started in the 1940s and entered floral art categories every year without fail. On show day she was always the first person through the door and worked tirelessly, winning several categories year after year. She really will be sorely missed.

Has the show changed over time? The Wyche and Colwall Horticultural Society originally formed in order to run the show and later developed its other activities, which include regular talks and garden visits. Over the years the show has grown and grown. At one point three shows were held every year and even included pig roasts, fun competitions, a three-legged race and a fun fair! These days the focus is very much on entries for the various classes. There are 84 categories to choose from, covering Flowers, Vegetables, Floral Art, Handicraft, Photography, Cookery and categories for Junior entrants. On the day of the show, there will be ice creams, teas, raffle, tombola and plant sales.

36

Is anybody welcome to enter? Of course! We are fortunate to have many talented growers and gardeners locally, but novices are always made very welcome and we encourage as many people as possible to enter. The schedule for the show is online (see the web address below) and you can pick up a copy from the office of John Goodwin Estate Agents in Colwall or from Provisions of Colwall. The show is also a chance to purchase a ticket for the Percy Picton memorial lecture which takes place during the first week in October. This year we are fortunate to welcome Fergus Garratt from Great Dixter, an impressive garden and house on the Sussex Weald. The talk helps to raise funds for our trust which funds young people who wish to study horticulture; we have an arrangement with Great Dixter who offer them work placements. The 75th Annual Show of the Wyche & Colwall Horticultural Society takes place on Saturday 11th August at Colwall Village Hall on Mill Lane. Beginning at 2pm, there will be dozens of entries for the various categories to browse as well as refreshments. It continues until 5pm. wychecolwallhorticulturalsoc. wordpress.com

Well Being

what about desire? I’ve just returned from a weekend of silent walking on the Malvern Hills. We walked nine miles south, and camped overnight, and nine miles back the next day. It was in the middle of the heat wave. Walking up to the top of Black Hill, where there is no shade, in the hottest part of the day, was a struggle – but the views at the top were breathtaking. Somehow the hard work and my aching legs made the view even more beautiful than usual, and the cool wind at the top was a real treat. On a cold day I’d have complained about the cool wind at the top, but in that moment it was perfect. This is often the nature of desire – we long for something to move us out of an uncomfortable situation. Usually after a while the new situation becomes uncomfortable, and we long for something else. How many people have said it’s too hot, that were complaining about the cold a few months ago? Our desires are inevitably frustrated: we long for a chocolate cake, eat too much and then feel ill, we can’t wait to go on holiday and when we get there we just want to come home again, and we always complain about the weather. One way out of this is to simply stop wanting things. That sounds like a pretty boring life, and it sounds like an impossible path to walk. It’s far better to get to know what we want, and how our desire works, and take it from there. If desire is always taking us towards something different from the present moment, sometimes it’s appropriate to look for something in the present moment to and sometimes it’s appropriate to ride the wave of desire, knowing that it is not leading you to a place of eternal happiness, but a place that you will want to move from at some point. Maybe I’ll go downstairs and enjoy having a snack. I know that if all I do is eat snacks, I’ll soon be sick of it, but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t enjoy the first one. Getting to know our habit patterns around desire and frustration means that we can also take life a

38

By Kaspa Thompson little more light-heartedly. Knowing that desire is a wave that always wants to move forward means we can take its cry of “This one thing will make you happy” with a pinch of salt. We can enjoy where it’s leading us, without being taken in by its impossible promise.

Magic of Christmas Concert

There’s a place for discernment too, of course. Some desires are bound to lead to trouble, some are neutral and some lead to positive, pleasurable places. Learning to say ‘no’ sometimes, is just as important as learning to say ‘yes’. I’m reminded of Achaan Chah saying if the student strays too far to the left, you tell them to go right, and if they stray too far to the right, you tell them to go left. We can say the same about desire. Sometimes it needs keeping an eye on, and sometimes it’s taking us to exactly the right place. Sometimes self-denial is good full-stop. There are some things that are simply unhelpful to indulge in at all. Sometimes just a period of self-denial is helpful. There’s nothing better than a meal after a fast day, and the lemonade ice-lolly I bought from the ice-cream van, half way through the walk home on a hot, hot Sunday, was the best I’ve ever tasted.

Theatre News

the wipers times Following sold-out UK tours in 2016 and 2017, and a critically acclaimed hit run in the West End, The Wipers Times will once again tour the UK this Autumn.

Competition

the wipers times Win a pair of tickets to this show at Malvern Theatres. Please answer the following question:

Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s satirical play The Wipers Times - a stage adaptation of their awardwinning BBC film - tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme, interspersed with comic sketches and spoofs from the vivid imagination of those on the front line.

The Wipers Times is based on a true story about soldiers during which world war?

In a bombed out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mispronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the frontline.

The winners will be drawn from the entries and notified by Friday 31st August.

Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the Top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Email the answer plus your name, postcode and phone number competition@allabout-local.com by Thursday 30th August 2018.

Good luck! *For terms & conditions see our website www.allaboutmalvernhills.com Postal entries: All About Magazines, Colwall, Malvern, Worcestershire WR13 6QN - please include the answer, your name, postcode and phone number

The Wipers Times will be on stage at Malvern Theatres from Monday 17th to Saturday 22nd September. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
