The bells of St Michael’s in Ledbury have ‘rung out the old’ and ‘rung in the new’ for centuries. To keep the sound alive, an appeal has been launched to refurbish the bell tower and it’s hoped the local community can raise ten thousand pounds for a new bell. You can read more on Page 26. We should also give a mention to the volunteers in Wellington Heath who have worked hard over many months to install a defibrillator in the middle of the village (Page 30). We are fortunate to live in an area with such an active community and in this edition you’ll read many more examples of why this is such a great place to live! Enjoy the festive period and I hope you have a good start to 2019!

Advice
are you a bull or a bear? By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall
m
y article this time last year focused on the need for diversification when investing, and if ever I needed an example, this year has been it. October has been a rotten month for equities, wiping out any gains this year in one fell swoop, and in most cases, resulting in a negative return for the last 12 months. So what lies ahead? The Bears
The Future
The bears, or pessimists, think that rising US and UK bond yields and slowing global growth mean the best is over for equities. Interest rate rises in the US and the UK, and an unwinding of quantitative easing, have pushed up yields, or interest rates. Higher yields affect equities as improved returns on bonds makes equities less attractive by comparison and higher yields also depress the current value of future dividend income. October saw significant declines in most major equity markets, with falls of 9% in Japan and the euro area, 7% in the US and 5% in the UK and emerging markets. Bears concede these factors matter less when global growth is accelerating, but in emerging markets and the euro area the momentum of growth is slowing and US growth looks close to a peak.
For the bears the best is over, the bulls think that the recovery has more life left in it and that investors have become too pessimistic. As in all such debates only time will tell who is right but the one message that does come through is this; diversification is key, as is a reminder of your investment time horizon. If you don’t need your money in the short term, leave it invested; history has taught us that investment is cyclical, the investment returns will be positive over the longer term regardless of the market ups and downs. Whether you are a bull or a bear really doesn’t matter, a diversified portfolio will take this volatility in its stride coupled with a gentle reminder that you’ve invested for the medium to long term.
The Bulls Bulls tend to see the recent action in the US equity market as reflecting a shift in investors’ preferences, not a flight from equities. On this interpretation investors are moving from fast-growing, but pricey, tech stocks paying low dividends to cheaper ‘value’ stocks that pay higher dividends and will gain from strong growth. So, for instance, Netflix, whose share price soared until September fell 17% last month while Procter and Gamble, whose shares had drifted lower through the year, rose 7%. The UK and US market has seen bigger setbacks, in late 2015 and earlier this year on similarly excessive worries but subsequently bounced back, these setbacks proved to be buying opportunities. And then there’s the fact that US wages are, at last, rising. That could prompt companies to go on an investment binge, lending a new impetus to productivity and to profits.

The first half of the evening is devoted to Fourteen, a light-hearted look at the preparations for a formal society dinner party in the lead-up to Christmas, performed by Wellington Heath Amateur Dramatic Society. After the interval of mince pies and mulled wine, Our Star Theatre Company performs Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, telling the story of Edmund (occasionally Sir Edmund) Blackadder, renowned pillar of the community, as we see how the philanthropic side of his character develops during the season of goodwill. The performances on 8th December take place at Wellington Heath Memorial Hall, with the doors opening at 6.30pm. Tickets are £9 for adults and £6 for children, early booking is advised by visiting www.ticketsource.co.uk or emailing whads.boxoffice@gmail.com For further details on local festive events, see www.allaboutmalvernhills.com

The film was Inspired by a large photographic archive created by the late Derek Evans and has interviews with people connected to hop growing and harvesting. The film has been made by Catcher Media, in conjunction with Herefordshire Council’s Libraries and funded by the Heritage Lottery and others. A bell to remember It’s a dark November night, but that hasn’t stopped a large group of people from turning out to support the launch of a major fundraising project at St Michael and All Angels Church in Ledbury. The nave is filled as Tim Keyes, Tower Captain at the church, outlines an ambitious fundraising plan to keep the bells ringing. It’s not a straightforward job. The bells weigh several tons and their fittings and the frame in which they hang all need extensive work. In addition, two new bells will be added to the peal which will make it easier to ring for those new to bell-ringing (not to mention some of the older ringers!). Further improvements to the tower are needed as well, including repairs, re-decoration, re-wiring and improvements to the fire alarm system. In all, it’s estimated the work will cost £200,000 to complete. A lot of the money will be raised through grant-awarding bodies, but at least £10,000 will need to be raised by the local community. ‘If we have the support of local people, it will be so much easier’ says Tim. ‘It might be a local organisation or group arranging fundraising events, it could be support from a local business, or it might be individuals who decide to donate money.’ The donations have already started. Chris Johnson, Chairman of Ledbury and District Civic Society was at the launch event to hand over two cheques totalling several hundred pounds. The money was raised from giving talks as well as
the proceeds of a concert by local vocal group Serenata. The £10,000 raised by the community will be used to sponsor a new treble bell. ‘The Tenor bell, which is the heaviest in the tower, has an inscription that reads ‘When you hear my harmonious sound, Let love and peace in you abound’’ says Tim. ‘We are planning to add an inscription to the new treble bell. it will commemorate those from Ledbury who died in World War One and in conflict since then. It will be ‘a bell to remember’ but it will also express the commitment of the whole community to peace’. The bells in the tower at Ledbury have long been used to mark significant moments in the lives of local people. The last time they underwent a significant restoration was in 1951, under the leadership of the poet John Masefield. This latest refurbishment will give new life to the church tower and help to ensure its bells will continue to ring out for generations to come.

All About...
the defibrillator In Wellington Heath, a disused telephone box has been given a new and vital life-saving role. A defibrillator is being installed in the box next to Pool Piece, following refurbishment work by a group of local people. David Williams has co-ordinated the project and tells us more.
Where did the idea for a defibrillator come from? The idea was first put forward by parishioner Simon Williamson in 2015 but although it was felt to be a very worthy project, at that time the parish council felt that it could not afford the necessary funding. The project was revived in late 2017 when The Farmers Arms offered to raise money to support a phone box defibrillator at their New Year’s Eve event. This was advertised in our village newsletter and came to the notice of another parishioner Les Davies who suggested that the Parish Council might also apply for a grant from Friends of Ledbury and District Healthcare. With funding now available the project was given the green light by the parish council.
What work has been done to the old phone box? Although in a very shabby state, the phone box has always had an 8-watt light which BT provide. With their agreement, this small power source can be used to keep the defibrillator cabinet at a constant temperature. (The defibrillator itself is battery powered). Perhaps the hardest work was the stripping down of the phone box to a sound surface for repainting. A high-grade paint in the correct red phone box colour has been applied, over fresh undercoats, and was provided free of charge by Indestructable Paints Ltd. of Birmingham. They are manufacturers of paint finishes for fast-jets so we think the phone box finish will be very durable!
How does a defibrillator save lives? Our defibrillator has been manufactured by HeartSine Ltd and is housed in a heated cabinet supplied by HeartSafe Ltd. It delivers an electric
30
shock to victims of cardiac arrest when it detects a treatable abnormal heart rhythm. When successful this restores a normal heartbeat and hence circulation. Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) like this are also known as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). They will only administer a shock to someone when they detect an appropriate abnormal heart rhythm. This makes them safe to be used by non-medically trained members of the public. They are set up to provide adequate instruction to persons rendering assistance even if they have had no formal training.
How can local people get involved? Once the defibrillator has been registered and approved by West Midlands Ambulance Service and is operational, HeartSafe Ltd will host training sessions in Wellington Heath, early in the New Year.

Business News
THE HOP POCKET SHOPPING VILLAGE CELEBRATING 30 YEARS The original spark for The Hop Pocket was Janet Pudge selling handmade beer jugs for a farming charity. She realised that people were interested in quality crafts and due to a decline in the hop industry there was redundant space in the hop kilns at the front of the farm house. In 1988 Janet and husband John ‘stuck a sign on the side of the road’ and opened the Hop Pocket Craft Shop with no real fanfare at all. Everything on display was on sale and return from local craftspeople that Janet knew or had met at craft fairs. The Hop Pocket Craft Shop was popular from the beginning and Janet is rightly proud that they never had a day without a customer. Very soon, in response to repeated requests, a tea room was opened at the back of the farm house, giving Janet’s customers a rest and a slice of homemade cake. More customers, and more crafts led to an expansion of the shop, twice!
1999 was a huge year with a move to a larger building at the back of the farm house, becoming The Hop Pocket Craft Centre with a restaurant, Wine Company, Deli and craft units. Over the years more and more agricultural buildings have been converted, the Craft Centre has been expanded to allow more seating in the restaurant and diverse new businesses have thrived at The Hop Pocket. Car parks have been expanded, infrastructure improved and a couple of years ago a new building was built purposely for commercial use, the first non-agricultural building on the site. John and Janet’s sons, William and Matthew are now involved in a truly family business that is a world away from the farm on which they grew up. The hop kilns and barns they played in as children are now a vibrant mixed use site, home to artisan food makers, craft workers, even an accountant and a recruitment agency. You can find The Hop Pocket Shopping Village in Bishops Frome, off the A4103 Worcester Hereford Road.

Gardening
green fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is preparing to celebrate a major anniversary. Here we go again, celebrating Christmas and New Year. It only seems like yesterday I was watering all day and melting in the heat! The nursery has been put to bed and there is a natural slowing down in the plant and animal world. Now is the time to make plans for the next growing season. Next year we are celebrating 40 years in business here at Caves Folly Nurseries. What a lot of digging, pruning, potting, pricking out, watering, customers, sales, landscaping and show gardens built. It makes me feel exhausted just reading it but what fantastic fun and satisfaction we have had through our work. To nurture a plant from a tiny seed and then sell it to a customer, who returns later to explain the enjoyment that it has given them, is so very rewarding. Many of our wonderful staff have been helping us for years and some of the original helpers still help at the Malvern Show! Over the years we have faced many challenges. 25 years ago, we were pioneers in trialling peatfree and organic composts, adopting organic principles in horticulture and using reclaimed materials. Many of these principles have since been adopted by major organisations such as the RHS and the National Trust. We were looked upon as mad hippies then - funny how trends change (I am proud to say that we are still mad old hippies). My huge challenge over the last few years has been trying to replace plastic pots. I have tried pots made from potato starch, Miscanthus, rice husks, coir, paper and biodegradable plastic. It is difficult to find a perfect solution. We will have a Pot Bank at the nursery this year for local customers to bring their used pots. To help make the project work please don’t just dump them, sort them and put them in the right sizes.
38
For the moment re-using is an obvious answer along with bought in coir pots and paper pots for vegetable plants. We can then experiment on the nursery with different pots as more products become commercially available. December and January are good times to have a break from gardening and build up your strength for next season. Order seeds and plan for sowing indoors in February. Don’t forget to feed the birds and do not disturb any hibernating creatures. The retail nursery is closed now until March 2019. If you would like to order or buy plants anytime please call us on (01684) 540631. Thanks to all of you who have put up with my horticultural ramblings for another year and I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a floriferous New Year!

Recipe
festive pork suffing
Method Preheat the oven to 200ยบC/400F/Gas 6. Choose your favourite sausages and remove the skin (if you pop the sausages into cold water the skin will come away from the meat cleanly). I often swap the ingredients around using different combinations of chestnuts, hazelnuts, orange rind and finely chopped smoked bacon. To enrich the ingredients I add an egg and a little more bread crumbs/oatmeal. I am not a believer of stuffing the turkey. I feel that the stuffing should be cooked separately like my mother always did. If you make stuffing balls for Christmas you can make two different flavoured stuffing balls and serve a mixture. Mix all the ingredients together. Either roll into balls or spread out evenly in a greased ovenproof dish. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown all over and cooked through.
This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a family friendly Deli Cafe serving local and artisan produce. You can find The Nest on the Hereford Road, a few miles outside Ledbury.

Keeping your weight in balance during the festive season Keren Milton from Slim for Good has some ideas for keeping your weight in balance during the festive season. Christmas can be challenging if you are weight watching but here’s some easy tips to enjoy festive goodies without putting on a single pound! • Stick to a maximum of 3 meals a day including 25% protein. Enjoy any treats at meal times and stop eating for 4 – 6 hours in between meals to burn off excesses and balance your weight loss hormones. • Christmas lunch isn’t the problem, it’s the mince pies, chocolates and alcohol that pile on the pounds. Be selective. Limit your indulgences and only eat what’s mind-blowingly appealing. My rule is: "If contains loads of sugar, it must be richly chocolatey or very lemony then I can easily leave anything else!" • Focus on your portion size when temptations are endless. Dig out a special small plate/bowl and glass just for you and eat Christmas desserts with a teaspoon. You’ll automatically eat slower and appreciate the flavours more. • Always have one glass of water per alcoholic drink to improve hydration and restrict intake and take a Milk Thistle supplement over the festive season to support your liver detox function. • It’s just too easy to pop chocolates in your mouth without thinking. Keep them out of reach and buy chocolates in wrappers. Keep used wrapper evidence in a pile in front of you and I promise you will eat less!

Theatre News International triumph
blood brothers returns to Malvern Theatres Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi-award winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it “brings the audience cheering to its feet and roaring its approval” (The Daily Mail). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Blood Brothers will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 29th January to Saturday 2nd February. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
