Welcome to the December edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

December 2010 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com Photo front page: Caves Folley Nursery; sign for Mistletoe Fair, December 08 Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About West of the Hills is distributed to 2,800 homes and businesses Booking Deadline: For January - 9 December

We might be reaching the end of the year, but many new things are happening in our part of the world. For example, Vicki Walker’s been in touch with me to say she’s hoping to start a Women’s Institute group for West Malvern. Later this month, on the 9th, there’ll be a meeting at St James Primary school in the evening to gauge interest and share ideas. If you’d like more information turn to Page 32 where you can find contact details for Vicki who can tell you more. New things are happening with this magazine as well, after nearly two years in existence, we’ve finally hit the information superhighway – that is to say, we have a web page! Although the site is still in its infancy, we hope to be able to do much more with it in the coming months. Of course ‘All About West of the Hills’ will still pop through your door each month, but there’s an online version to read if you prefer, at allabout-local.com. Have a lovely December! Sascha

Christmas Celebrations Anyone? The Reverend David Nichol

The Reverend Robert Ward

vicar of St. James Church in West Malvern

Rector of St James Church in Cradley, St. John the Baptist in Mathon and St John The Evangelist at Storridge.

What's the best thing about Christmas for you personally? A desire in many people to think about other people and to realise there is more to life than just the ordinary hustle and bustle of every day life. Do you have a message for our readers to think about over Christmas? The story of the hospital cleaner and the boiled sweet - there was once a cleaner waiting for a lift to take a floor polisher up to the next floor in a hospital, also waiting for the lift was a vicar on his way to see a patient. Both smiled as they arrived at the lift and stood silently watching the numbers flashing as they waited, seemingly eternally, for the lift. Then the cleaner, who had never meet the Vicar before, got out a packet of sweets and offered one to the Vicar. He thanked her, the lift came and they went their separate ways. This little tale captures something of the truth that lies at the heart of Christmas, simply that God gave to those who weren't expecting it an unsolicited gift. The gift was Jesus Christ, the child whose birth we celebrate at Christmas. The gift is given to all who will receive it but the gift can only be enjoyed if we are prepared to accept it, as the Vicar had to do with the boiled sweet. The gift God freely offers requires us to make room for Jesus Christ in our lives. Highlights at St James in West Malvern over Christmas 19th December 6.30pm - A Candlelit Carol Service Christmas Eve 5.30pm - Family Crib Service 11.30pm - Midnight Communion Christmas Day 10.30am - Family Service followed by Communion

bosbury-church.org

What for you is the best part of Christmas? Many people say that for them the children’s service on Christmas Eve is the real beginning of Christmas. For me the high spot is the Midnight Mass, when in the midst of the darkness we celebrate the coming of Christ among us.’ Is there a simple message you have for our readers as we approach Christmas? Christmas isn’t just about ourselves, but about a world given the hope of new beginnings, by returning to our earliest intimations of light and joy. Help us to turn that hope into a reality again this Christmas time.’ Some of the Services for Cradley, Storridge & Mathon 5th December, 11am Family Service including a ‘Blessing of the Cribs’ at Cradley Church 12th December, 11am Sunday School ‘Decorating of the Tree’ at Cradley Church 19th December, 4pm Traditional Carol Service at Cradley Church 19th December, 6pm Carols by Candlelight at Mathon Church, all welcome 21st December, 6pm Carols in the Barn at Heath Mill Farm, Cradley, courtesy of John & Joy Perkins 21st December, 7.30pm Traditional Carol Service, Storridge Church Christmas Eve 4pm Christingle. happy christmas to all our readers

There are many special services and Carol singing events going on ino our local churches and elsewhere during December. Below a selection of our local clergy highlight what’s going on and say everyone is welcome. The Reverend Melanie Horton vicar of St James in Colwall and All Saints in Coddington ‘For children Christmas is a time of enchantment, when tinsel becomes a halo, a tea towel the headgear of a shepherd and a paper hat the magnificent crown of a wise man, it is a time when there is magic in the air and life tingles with possibilities. As we get older the wonder and awe sometimes gets lost in the busyness of the season and the season of love and joy becomes instead the season of frayed tempers and cross words. To recapture the magic that captivated us as children is a simple yet profound thing. We need to turn as the wise men did toward Bethlehem and behold with simplicity and faith a baby, born in the poorest of conditions yet a beacon of love and hope. When we gaze upon God’s gift of love we are able to put our anxieties and concerns into perspective and to see ourselves and the world through his eyes. In that moment we see that we are worthy of love and full of love to give. In the context of God’s great love, and his first and greatest gift, the gift of his Son, then our own giving and sharing become a source of joy and fulfilment and we can be our true selves as God intended us to be – loving, giving, and full of wonder.’ A selection of services December 2nd, 6.30pm Colwall Park Hotel, ‘Light up a Life’ Service’ in aid of St Michael’s Hospice December 10th, 7.00pm Colwall Village Hall, Colwall Community Choir, children’s choir & Guests Christmas Concert Saturday December 11, 3.00pm, Woofields Farm, Coddington - Farmyard Nativity Tuesday December 14, 7.45pm, Colwall Village Hall, Colwall Singers Carol Concert Thursday December 16, 7.30pm Ale House Carols (Colwall) readings and seasonal refreshments Sunday December 19 10.00am St James the Great Church Christmas Parish Praise & Nativity

‘The aim is to create a new shopping experience. I foresee a cafe in the complex as well as shops selling things like jewellery, crafts, clothing and fashion’

Now its time to develop the site further, a move he hopes will increase the numbers of shoppers coming into Malvern. ‘Recently Belle Vue Terrace has seen a growing number of really interesting, specialist retailers’ says Adrian, ‘and I hope we can add more space to allow this to continue. Robson Ward will of course remain on the site, everything we make is still bespoke, designed and built individually for clients, and certainly not ‘off the shelf’.

The centre of Malvern’s getting a new shopping area. The Courtyard will be a mix of retail units just off Belle Vue Terrace at the top of the town centre. Its the idea of Adrian Ward, who’s run the Robson Ward furniture showroom on the site for many years. ‘We’re staying open, but we’re creating a mix of smaller retail units alongside our showroom that we hope will give small businesses the chance to open up in the town centre’ he says. ‘The aim is to create a new shopping experience. I foresee a cafe in the complex as well as shops selling things like jewellery, crafts, clothing and fashion’. Adrian first had the idea several years ago, but business was so brisk he never had the time to realise his idea. He went into business 42 years ago in 1968 after making his own kitchen. The quality impressed a friend so much he was asked to create a second kitchen. A positive review in a Birmingham-based newspaper saw a further 81 enquiries. He began making the kitchens in a former Water Bottling Works in the centre of Malvern, and developed the site into his shop.

Green Fingers Its December, and Bridget’s looking forward to a bit of kissing under the mistletoe! The festive season is here again and we are all rushing around getting ready. The gorgeous summer seems to have flown by and its time to get the thermals out of mothballs. Still, once Christmas and New Year are out of the way then its only a few weeks until spring! In the meantime there’s plenty to look forward to. We are having a Mistletoe Fair at the Nursery again on the 11th December between 2pm and 4pm, organised by the Colwall Orchard Group. It is always good to see people buying natural decorations for their homes, after all in recent times we have become more and more detached from our links with plants and the natural world. Many plants we use at Christmas such as Mistletoe and Holly became popular as decorations because of their connections

cradley Stoves Installation & maintenance of woodburning and multifuel stoves

with folklore. Living evergreen foliage was a key element in seasonal decoration for winter and Christmas festivities. Our Christian festival falls at the time of earlier Pagan feasts which celebrated light over darkness around the time of the winter solstice. Older beliefs pointed toward evergreens in winter keeping away evil spirits. Whatever you might believe, at a time of darkness across the landscape it is an instinctive reaction to bring greenery into the house and brighten up those dark evenings with pretty lights and candles. So why not keep a few evil spirits out of your house this Christmas and drape the evergreens around the mantle, it is so much better than using tinsel! Happy Christmas and a peaceful New year to everyone.

All About... ...the Malvern Baby Gym Club Malvern Baby Gym Club offers activities and fun for pre-school children and meets weekly in Colwall. Alison Winters explains more.

Tell us what you do

We are lucky enough to have the use of amazing new facilities at the Downs School in Colwall. Every week we put out larger apparatus such as benches and tables for children to crawl, balance and jump from. We also have a large range of games equipment such as footballs, stilts, hoops, bats and balls. There is lots of equipment to use and the children get really creative, building pirate ships, trains and all sorts of amazing things. We organise simple running races and sometimes parachute games during the session. The whole point of Gym Club is to provide activities and equipment so parents can help their children enjoy those they are interested in. For Christmas we’ll probably organise a special trail or activity during a session or have a trip somewhere towards the end of term.

who runs the club?

The Club is run by three local mums, Alison, Marie and Tania. I am the secretary which involves keeping up with membership, letting members know of upcoming events and changes as well as organising events including trips during school holidays. The current group has been at the Downs for about two years but many members went to Baby Gym Club when it met at Malvern College, where it was run for many years by

Frances Thurlow. We’re enjoying being in a new location and sharing our activities with new parents. We have a maximum of 30 families as members at any one time. Some people come every week whilst others drop in occasionally but we usually have between 10 and 15 families at a session.

what do the children get out of it? Lots of fun! They love the freedom to run around in a big space and let off steam. There’s also the opportunity to develop new physical skills in a safe environment. They play with friends and perhaps best of all is the chance to be the boss for an hour while mum or dad takes their lead!

And what do the parents get out of it?

The enjoyment of seeing their child grow in confidence while developing physical skills. It’s a relaxed, informal environment where everyone joins in and has fun. There’s the chance to meet parents with children of a similar age while spending an hour of quality time with your child doing something you both enjoy. This is a really friendly, welcoming group with mums, dads, grandparents and childminders joining in. You don’t need any special skills to help your child with these activities, just be willing to take the lead from them and have fun .

Malvern Baby Gym meets every Wednesday at the Downs School during termtime from 10am till 11am. It costs £5.00 a term per family, or half price if you join after half term. Anyone is welcome to come along and try a session to see if it’s for them. You can call Alison on 01684 567777 to find out more.

Healthy Christmas! I’d like to start by wishing you a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year!

By Allison Maxwell from Colwall

‘Healthy’ and ‘Christmas’ in the same sentence? It can be hard to imagine, I agree. To my way of thinking there’s nothing wrong with a bit of festive indulgence when it only comes once a year. However, if you’re used to eating healthily, or on a mission to lose weight, you don’t want to abandon your principles entirely. There’s a lot you can do to create healthy Christmas recipes in all sorts of small ways, to make your Christmas dinner healthier and lower in fat without compromising on taste or enjoyment.

Healthier options at Christmas without missing out

Turkey is by far the best choice for a healthy Christmas dinner, the meat is less fatty than goose or duck. Roast your turkey on a rack so it doesn’t bathe in fat as it cooks, later on you can skim the fat off the gravy. Its also good to make your own stuffing, some packet mixes contain unhealthy hydrogenated vegetable oils. If you are in charge of shopping for Christmas food, only cater for the number of people you are feeding and not for an imaginary tribe of relatives or friends. You can still buy rich food to enjoy, but only buy enough for just a couple of days and no more. Don’t feel that you have to be a Scrooge-like killjoy at Christmas, it is a time of celebration after all! A large meal once a year won’t do you any harm, but make use of healthy Christmas recipes, include healthy soups and salads in between those calorie-laden foods. After a big Christmas lunch, its tempting to lie down on the sofa to nap or watch a film. That’s the worst thing you can do for your heartburn. Food is still in your stomach for the at least the next three hours, lying in wait to cause reflux. If you must go from mashed potatoes to couch potato, at least sit up with your

22

head above your stomach or take a walk. There are plenty of healthy alternatives to high-sugar and fat-laden Christmas foods. I have chosen this recipe as its fat-free and almost sugar-free. To be even healthier you can substitute the brown sugar for date syrup or agave syrup, available from a good quality supermarket or health shop.

No-fat Christmas Pudding

As mentioned above, this pudding is much lighter and completely fat-free. It’s also vegetarian, so make this one if you have non-meat eaters coming round. This pudding will not keep for very long. So don’t make it more than 2-3 weeks before Christmas. To serve four: • 2 medium-sized apples • 2 bananas • 50g (2oz) walnuts • 50g (2oz) almonds • 50g (2oz) hazelnuts • 4 eggs • 150ml (5 fl oz) milk • 1 tsp mixed spice • 450g (1lb) mixed dried fruit • juice and grated rind of 1 lemon • 1 tsp salt • 450g (1lb) freshly made wholemeal breadcrumbs • 50g (2oz) soft brown sugar 1. Grate the apples without peeling them. Peel and roughly chop the bananas and nuts. Break the eggs and whisk with the milk. 2. Mix all the ingredients together and stir well. 3. Place into one or two well-greased pudding basins and cover with folded greaseproof paper. Tie round with string. 4. Steam for 3-4 hours in a covered pan with 5cm (2in) simmering water. Check the water level at intervals and don’t allow to boil dry. Then cool and store. 5. To re-heat, steam for an hour before turning out. Recipe courtesy of www.essentially-england.com
