Editor’s message

Happy New Year! Five years ago I started publishing this magazine, and for this edition we are celebrating! Packed full of stories and local events, you will find an article for every small village and town covered by our distribution to remind us all what a beautiful and diverse community we live in. I am proud to have helped many local businesses and community groups thrive during this time. Special thanks to all of my customers who are continuing to support our publication, and especially those that have been with us from the start; Classic Interiors, Buckingham House Dental Practice, Shane Howells, The Downs School, Malvern Hills Furniture and Lee Hankins. Where would we be without our local businesses serving our community? Also thanks to my fantastic team, including deliverers; without your help, hard work and dedication this magazine would not exist. And of course to you, the reader, in the hope you will continue to enjoy West of the Hills.

Colwall feature

Cafe H2O Setting up Cafe H20 at the Wyche Innovation Centre in Upper Colwall was lots of work but very rewarding according to the women behind the idea. Debbie. ‘There’s a lot of regular customers, especially those that appreciate easy-access, since we have ample parking and a ramp leading up to the door.’ ‘We’ve kept our menu deliberately straightforward while offering a good choice of dishes’ says Debbie. ‘As well as cakes and snacks, we offer light meals plus soup and a good range of both hot and cold drinks.’

Cafe H20 is run as a co-operative by people with learning disabilities. ‘We have 15 people involved at the moment’ says Debbie Probert who set it up with Kate Harding. ‘They are all involved to a greater or lesser extent in the running of the cafe. Its no mean feat to run a start-up business, they’ve worked incredibly hard, especially in the summer months when visitors to the Hills come in.’ The co-op originally started in Malvern four years ago, to make jams and pickles. ‘Jamboree’ sold its produce in farmers’ markets and in local shops, but the idea for a cafe came after a discussion with Dr Emma Philpott and Dr Adrian Burden, owners of The Wyche Innovation Centre. ‘Its been more successful than we imagined’ says Kate. ‘There’s been so much to get right, from health and safety to ordering stock and serving the public. We try and stock local produce as far as possible, from Clive’s Fruit Farm near Upton and Colwall Orchard Group. This year we’ll be re-starting production of our own pickles and jam, which will be fantastic to serve with Ploughman’s Lunches and other dishes.’ Alison and Rosalind are busy serving customers as we chat, running the place efficiently with just a little occasional help from Kate or Debbie. ‘The public’s response to what we do has been overwhelming and extremely supportive’ says

6

‘The people working here have grown hugely in confidence’ continues Debbie. ‘One young man joined us who was incredibly shy and didn’t want to work ‘front of house’. He now serves customers and works on the till. The change in his life is immense and it can make me quite proud of what has been achieved.’ Kate is equally positive. ‘We’ve seen people blossom’ she says. ‘Just before Christmas we organised a buffet for our staff and other people working in this building. I saw business owners, professors and scientists sitting alongside our cooperative members, all chatting and getting along as equals. It was quite an emotional moment to realise how far they’ve come.’ ‘Essentially our cafe provides a service to the local area and gives life skills to the people with disabilities who work here’ continues Kate. ‘We do rely on volunteers to help us, so if anybody can spare as little as two hours a week to come and help at busy times, or to help with the jam and pickle making, we would all be really grateful.’

H20 Cafe at the Wyche Innovation Centre is open seven days a week from 9.30am until 4.30pm (it might be closed on some Wednesdays so please check before heading out). Groups of walkers and cyclists are very welcome. For more information call (01684) 252414.

willow weaving Leaning against the door of Victoria Westaway’s shed are two sheaves of willow stems ready to be woven into her next work of art. ‘Its a beautiful thing to work with’ she says, ‘Even the smell of live willow is amazing!’ giant apples, a ram and I’ve completed two wassailing men, who wouldn’t look out of place at the Colwall wassail celebrations!’ Recently Victoria extended her talents to weave a six foot high running man using metal wire. Its now on public display in a park near Bristol. Bending and shaping the metal was hard work. ‘I got through several pairs of gloves while creating that!’ she laughs. ‘It needed to be able to withstand rough treatment as it’s on permanent public display.’

Based in Coddington, Victoria creates striking sculptures of people, animals and even giant apples. ‘Coddington is a lovely place to work’ says Victoria, ‘we see the sun rise over the Malvern Hills and set over Hay Bluff in the west. I love the fact this feels like a ‘hidden village’, tucked away in the landscape.’ After completing a degree in Theatre Design Victoria went on to work for a theatre company. ‘Part of my work was to create giant puppets using willow as the structure’ she says. ‘That was the moment I began to work with willow and realised what a versatile material it was.’ A career break to head off travelling in South America gave Victoria time to reflect on just how much she enjoyed working with natural materials. ‘You see people working in this way in virtually every culture in the world’ she says, ‘I’m originally from Somerset where weaving is a part of rural life.’ ‘Last year I exhibited my work in many places, including Dragon Orchard (near Ledbury) and in gardens including an Open Garden event here in Coddington. Its really begun to take off, people passing my garden even spot items and push notes through the door, asking if I can make them something!’ ‘My work has been focussed on life here in Herefordshire’ continues Victoria, ‘so I made

10

One woman in north Worcestershire asked Victoria to create a sculpture of her children, sitting side by side on a bench in the garden, using willow from a tree that had been felled. ‘I get all sorts of commissions. For smaller gardens, sculptures of birds are popular while figures running, sitting or reading are popular for bigger spaces’. With a regular coating of linseed oil and a little tender loving care, a willow sculpture can last up to ten years, perhaps more if its moved inside during the winter. ‘Of course the best thing about willow is that its a renewable product. If a sculpture did eventually start to look tatty, the willow could simply be replaced, giving it a new lease of life.’ This year could bring wider recognition for Victoria’s work, as she’s been asked to create a sculpture for a show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show which takes place in May . ‘Its really exciting’ she says, ‘My work will form part of a garden being created by Olivia Kirk, a garden designer from Worcester, who’s previously won Gold at Chelsea for her work.’

Cradley feature

By Lucy Campbell

Art Exhibition An exhibition of work by several nationally-acclaimed artists opens in Cradley this March, and it has the internet to thank for its existence.

By Amanda Anderson

‘I’ve used social media for quite a while to establish contact with other artists, and so this exhibition has come about thanks to Facebook!’ laughs Tamsin Abbott, a local stained glass maker who has helped create the exhibition. Called ‘Beast and Beauty’, the exhibition brings together the work of several prestigious British artists whose work is inspired by the landscape of Britain and its mythology and folklore. As well as prints, paintings and drawings there is jewellery, mosaics, stained glass, metalwork and sculpture. The idea for the exhibition began to take shape in 2011 when Tamsin went to Art in Action, an event in Oxforshire where artists and craftsmen openly demonstrate their skills and discuss their work with the public. ‘Four of us were staying with Judy Dyble, one of the original members of the

By Catherine Hyde

group Fairport Convention and Trader Horne. We decided to form our own artists’ group, since we were all so influenced by the British landscape.’ Called the Sisterhood of Ruralists, they have since exhibited elsewhere in Britain, but with its members scattered across southern England, Tamsin decided it was time to bring their work to Herefordshire. ‘We have the work of thirteen women artists at this exhibition in Cradley and they are coming from as far away as Scotland and Cornwall. We seem to have captured the zeitgeist, the relationship of humans to animals and the natural world is a prevalent idea in art at the moment. It’s ironic that we’re inspired by nature, but brought together by technology!’

The ‘Beast and Beauty’ Art Exhibition is at Blue Ginger Gallery at Cradley (on the A4103) from 22nd March until 11th May 2014. For more details look at www.blue-ginger.com

Monty Funk There’s always been something of a creative buzz about West Malvern. The village attracts all kinds of musicians, writers and artists. ‘Some people tell me it’s because of the fantastic light, sitting on the western slopes of the Hills’ says Pete Nash, sitting at the window of his office at the top of Westminster Bank.

Pete’s business, Monty Funk, is all about being creative. The video, audio and heritage interpretation production company has an impressive list of clients that include the BBC, The National Trust and other major UK brands. ‘We’ve just completed a programme for the BBC World Service’ says Pete, ‘we’re working on several more radio projects, piloting a radio programme and completing another seven heritage projects.’ As their reputation grows, the number of people working for the company has also expanded. In one corner is sound engineer Ben Youatt, busy mixing an audio trail that will be used by visitors to National Trust land in North Wales. Anthony Griffiths, better known as Griff, provides

the artistic talent that, amongst other things, produces interpretive boards for visitors to National Parks. Monty Funk also delivers its products in creative ways. An electronics expert is converting antique telephones so that visitors to a former mine in Wales can dial up the stories of the people who once worked there. ‘I’m lucky to have so many talented people on the doorstep’ says Pete. ‘We have a huge number of artists in West Malvern, of course for many it’s a hobby but many more make a living from it. There’s also a great music scene with weekly live music at the West Malvern Social Club and West Fest every year. I feel lucky to live and work in a place like West Malvern.’

pancake race A charity pancake race at Storridge Village Hall in March has been organised by local fundraiser Moira Starkey.

During the past ten years Moira, who’s in her 80s, has raised £15,000 for charity and will go to great lengths to help good causes. ‘It all started after I lost my step-mother and step-brother’ says Moira. ‘I’d looked after them for many years and suddenly found myself with nothing to do.’ Following a hip operation Moira could no longer drive and found herself housebound. ‘Reading does get a bit dull after a while, so someone asked me if I could make them some lemon curd. I did, and it all took off from there.’ Moira will often be seen at local fundraising events, selling her pickles, jams and chutneys to help raise money. ‘I began by raising money for local hospices and Marie Curie Cancer Care, but in the 1990s I lost several friends to breast cancer. One of them had been to The Haven in Hereford and so I began to raise money for them.’

One of Moira’s greatest fundraising stunts was completing a marathon by walking around the Village Hall in Storridge; no easy feat for a woman who uses sticks to walk. Covering the 26 miles took Moira three weeks of walking and almost 1,800 laps of the Hall. ‘We finished with a grand cream tea celebration and raised a total of £2,000’ she says with a smile. Always looking for her next charity fundraising opportunity, Moira’s involved in organising a Pancake Race at Storridge Village Hall to raise more money for The Haven Breast Cancer Support. ‘We’re indoors, so the weather won’t affect us’ she says. ‘Everyone is welcome to join in with a team of four people, or come along to watch. It should be a hilarious afternoon!’

The Pancake Race at Storridge Village Hall is on 2nd March at 2.30pm, with all proceeds donated to The Haven Breast Cancer Support Centre. For information please speak to Moira on 01886 880200 or Jen on 01886 880498

making music A new youth choir could soon be starting in Bosbury, led by Kate Cheetham who recently moved to the area. Kate has taken over responsibility for music at Bosbury Church.

‘‘We have moved from Surrey where I was Head of Music at Rosebery School in Epsom. I hope to build up a church choir capable of singing in four parts and we really need local people to join us. Although Bach and Brahms are my ‘top two’ composers I also love the vocal music of the Renaissance and the 20th century’ she says. ‘I promise it will be lots of fun!’ In her previous job Kate ran a very successful youth choir which went on European Tours and regularly won competitions. ‘If anyone has children interested in singing then please get in touch. My plan is for the youth choir to experience and enjoy a wide range of traditional and contemporary music.’ For enquiries about joining any of these choirs, or for piano, singing or music theory tuition, Kate can be contacted by calling 07789 907087 or via email cheethamkj@gmail.com

years. ‘The oldest bell here dates from 1640 and there would have been ringing here before that’ says Frank. ‘There’s certainly a strong sense of the heritage here and our part in helping that continue.’ There’s no pressure to continue ringing after the initial training is completed, but some students carry on with their ringing in towers around the area. ‘After the first course a few years ago, we decided it would be good to keep this learning process going’ says Frank. ‘The course will be a chance to be taught how to go about bellringing. After an initial five sessions, the training will continue one evening per week, we’ll aim to make sure it happens at a time that fits in around people’s lives.’

Learn Bellringing A new beginner’s bellringing class starts in Bosbury this February, in the church’s distinctive fortified belltower. Previous courses for beginners have been so successful, Frank Seabright has decided its time to run another one. ‘The students have all loved it’ he says. ‘When they start, most people have no idea what it involves. Its only when you come and have a go that you realise what makes ringing so absorbing. There’s both a mental and a physical aspect to bellringing.’ There is of course a social aspect as well, as the friendly group of bellringers who help with the course will testify. Apart from meeting in the pub afterwards (aptly named ‘The Bell’!) many ringers attend courses, visit towers elsewhere in Britain and abroad, making new friends as they go. Bosbury’s Bell Tower was built almost 800 years ago and houses bells that date back almost 400

pub opening A popular pub for many years, the Farmer’s Arms Pub in Wellington Heath opens in February for business once again.

(CAMRA) and many local people. ‘They came in and showed a lot of enthusiasm when we started’ says Jon. ‘They’ve been good at leaving me to it, I do hope that now we’re re-opening that local people will support us.’

A popular pub for many years, it lay empty until sold by Enterprise Inns last year, and bought by Jon Baker, a Herefordshire builder. ‘We’ve changed the layout of the pub to make the most of its features and the kitchen has been re-fitted’ says Jon. ‘New equipment has been installed in the bar and cellar and we’ve improved access for disabled customers with a new ramp. Fortunately the renovation of the building has been quite straightforward, the pub wasn’t in a bad condition when we took it on.’ The news of the pub’s re-opening has been welcomed by The Campaign For Real Ale

Five people enquired about the tenancy of the pub but its been awarded to Lawrence and Carolyn Joplin who are coming from The Bell at Yarpole, another popular Herefordshire pub. ‘We’ll be running it with our son Joe and daughter Hannah’ says Carolyn. ‘We’re really looking forward to coming to Wellington Heath and hope to see many local people coming through the door.’ ‘Our pubs are such an important part of British life’ says Jon, ‘so its good to be supporting their survival. I hope we have brought stability to the future of the Farmer’s Arms, all I can ask for now is for local people to make use of it once again.’

Interior Design

‘Wallpaper’ This word seems to put the fear of God into most of my clients! I agree, it is a daunting prospect covering your walls in something this permanent, (well for most of us), five years at least. Therefore a lot of thought needs to go into this before you do it, but don’t be too cautious. If you are a bit braver you will be amazed at the difference that scary paper can make. Large vibrant designs can make a space look bigger, not smaller, adding a third dimension. Whereas a small busy pattern can have the opposite effect. If you have big windows and a lovely view, a design with a dark background will frame your view, as it draws the eye to the open space, not the wallpaper. Mirrors on dark papers do the same thing and reflect the light drawn in by this. Feature walls - big trend for this the last five years or more; it’s ok to do this but don’t make it look like this was the intention. Make it more interesting by taking the pattern through to an alcove opposite the main feature, or inserting the same paper into the back of a dresser, or framing a large canvas with it. If you put colour and pattern on the walls, make sure you use an accent from the paper, (colour or pattern), at the windows as curtains or blinds, or on the floor as a rug. This will blend it into the room. If it is on one large wall only it will shout at you!

The dream starts here...

From Concept...to Completion

The best designs I have seen for the new season are from Farrow and Ball, and Designers Guild, but the choice is vast. The websites of most of the manufacturers will send you a sample. If however it’s a major project such as hall, stairs and landing make sure you are sure and order one roll, cut strips and hang around the space randomly. Live with it for a week. If it still makes you smile, go for it. All the DIY store websites have measuring and hanging guides on their websites. My one tip would be if you need 12 rolls get 13. Even my best decorator can make a mistake, and batch numbers are important. Nine times out of ten there will be a colour difference between them. You won’t notice on the roll - but you will when it’s hung! Sarah-Jane www.sarahjanesinteriors.co.uk

Garden

Green Fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is busy getting ready for Spring

www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 We’ve had a few months of very mild weather and so the bulbs are emerging waiting for their chance to spring into action. February is a month for getting ready for what’s to come, cleaning those tools and giving them a once-over. Its a month to prepare the glasshouse for all the new seeds and cuttings. Broad Beans, Peas, Spring onions and Parsley can also be sown early with some protection. If you are planting seed potatoes chit them and put them in a light, cool but frost free place. Later on in March almost anything can be sown inside so use those cold winter days to plan and buy your seeds. In the vegetable garden there is still time to plant bareroot fruit trees and bushes. Prune summer raspberries back to the top of their supports and cut autumn raspberries back to ground level. Add compost or well rotted manure to seed sowing areas. If you have a glasshouse, coldframe or kitchen window sill, there are lots of seedlings you can start off ready for planting out in April. Early salad

leaves such as lettuce, Marvel of Four Seasons is a good hardy variety or try oriental greens such as Mizuna and Mustards. In the ornamental garden, plant Lilies and Allium bulbs. Cut deciduous hedges if necessary before the birds start nesting. Prune winter flowering shrubs such as Viburnum Bodnantense and Mahonia. Shrubs grown for their winter stem colours such as Cornus and Salix cultivars should now be cut down to their bases. Cut back deciduous ornamental grasses. Annuals can be sown in the greenhouse. Plants such as Sweet peas, Cosmos, Agastache, Alyssum, Lobelia, Antirrhinum, Calendula and Dianthus can all be sown early in modules to minimise root disturbance and encourage earlier flowering. With the growing season upon us it is an exciting time watching everything bursting into life. Now all we have to do is keep up with it! Enjoy your February and March, and remember Spring is just around the corner!

Well-Being

Creating New

good habits By Satya Robyn from Malvern 2014 is ticking on. Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions? Are you still keeping them? Change is a tricky business. I know how it is to make firm plans on a Sunday night to eat more healthily or spend less time on Facebook, only to fail miserably at 11.30ish on the following day. We are creatures of habit. Even people who are often in crisis or always starting new projects may be more attached to habit than they seem – the habit of avoiding underlying difficulties through creating drama, or the habit of never seeing things through. At the heart of change is the skill of gradually replacing our bad habits with new, good habits. It takes conscious effort and perseverance to let go of our unhealthy patterns and pick up new ones, but once healthy habits are established they require much less effort of us. This means we can get on with our lives (or move onto replacing other unhealthy habits) whilst they work away on us day by day. Here are my suggestions for giving your New Good Habit the best chance of succeeding. 1. Put some time aside to contemplate what is important for you at this time. What is causing you the most distress in your life? What is stopping you from doing what you want to do? What have you wanted to do for years but never prioritised? 2. Pick one thing at a time. If you have other things that you’d like to change, put them on a list and look at them again in one or three months when your current habit has become established. 3. Be realistic. If you decide to do an hour of meditation every day from scratch, you are setting yourself up to fail. Start with five minutes, or even three. Build up gradually. Learn as you go about the best time or place, how you’d like to sit etc. As time goes on don’t make too

42

many changes at once – stick with what you’re currently doing for a week or a few weeks and observe what happens. 4. Get support. We are more likely to succeed if we surround ourselves by people who have already established the new habits we’re working on. See if you can seek some of these people out. You might also want to get support from a New Habit Buddy who has decided to start a new habit at the same time as you – talk about how you’re getting on once a week. Find books, courses or teachers to keep you going. 5. Get back in the Ferrari. Rather than a wagon, you might want to choose yourself a nice vehicle to get back into as soon as you fall off. It’s very tempting to scrap the whole project if we miss a day or eat a doughnut, but if we accept that we probably will have slips as we make the transition, these slips become a part of the process rather than failure. See if you can accept your slip, make sense of why you made it and learn from it, and then get straight back onto your plan. A phrase they use in the 12 Step programmes which is very useful here is ‘progress, not perfection’. Learning new habits can take months or even years – keep pointing yourself in the right direction, and keep going! Before you do anything else, take five minutes to write down the New Good Habit you’d like to acquire, or at least book time into your diary to do some thinking. Good luck – do feel free to let me know how you get on - satya@satyarobyn.com.

Malvern Abbey BNI The small business community in Malvern is set to benefit by the opening of a new chapter of Business Network International (BNI). A group of business entrepreneurs based in the Malvern area have started an exciting initiative to boost their own businesses, and that of the local business community – and they are doing it by harnessing the power of the fast-growing worldwide networking organisation. BNI allows only one representative from each trade or profession to join any BNI group. This means members can lock out their competition, ensuring they receive 100% of all new business generated by the group. Working together, BNI members achieve incredible results, growing their business in ways they could never accomplish alone – and this currently averages over £26,000 per member from the 25 groups across the Midlands. The new group, named Malvern Abbey BNI after the iconic Abbey in the town, meet every Thursday at the Sarova Abbey Hotel, Abbey Road, Great Malvern. Typically, BNI chapters consist of 25 members of individual businesses from around the area to make up the current membership, with others welcome to join. Diverse membership includes several tradespeople as well as, among others, a marketing consultant, a property agent, a chartered surveyor, a builder, a web designer and a supplier of office equipment. Members of the chapter are keen to invite new businesses to visit the group, to enjoy networking opportunities and share in the business passed between the members.

Business owners wanting to visit Malvern Abbey BNI should call Mark Williams on 07881 866043 to find out more.

Steve’s themes range from politics and popular culture, to work and relationships. His informal, relaxed, conversational manner more than makes up for the sometimes biting content of his material. Recent appearances have included the Latitude Festival, the Bristol Poetry Festival and the Swindon Festival of Literature. He has won a number of poetry slams, including the Ledbury Poetry Festival Slam the UK All Stars Slam at the Cheltenham Literature Festival. > Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013 **** “Deeply funny…Well-deserved laughs came thick and fast” **** “This talented duo are engrossing, well observed and frequently head-flingingly funny” from five 4-star reviews at the Fringe > Own show at Magnet Theater, New York, November 2013 > Regular gigs at Leicester Square Theatre and other top London comedy venues > new BBC Radio 4 commission for their own programme in 2014

Your questions answered: After 22 years in practice and over 50,000 treatments I have seen many interesting cases.

Topic of the month: Biceps Tendinopathy What is it?

The biceps brachii to give it its full name is the muscle at the front of the upper arm that flexes the elbow and also rotates the hand into the palm-up position (supination). In biceps tendinopathy the tendon at the front of the shoulder becomes painful and movements of the shoulder and arm become difficult. Originally it was called biceps tendonitis and was thought to be due to inflammation of the tendon. Although not fully understood medically, it is not now thought to be due to some sort of derangement of the collagen tissue in the tendon with inflammation being an occasional feature.

What causes it?

can diagnose from routine physical examination. Other times soft tissue ultrasound scan and/or MRI may also be helpful. The neck should also always be checked as nerve irritation here may mimic the symptoms.

What can be done?

In my experience many cases will respond to hands on manipulation and very localised soft tissue work (friction techniques). Research in Scandinavia has also suggested that very specific so-called” eccentric loading” exercises may be of benefit. Severe cases may respond to steroid injection between the tendon and its sheath although surgical intervention is rare.

Common amongst manual workers this is a problem that often builds up over time due to poor lifting technique or repetitive arm activity. Problems with other shoulder muscles such as rotator cuff damage may cause the biceps to be over used. Direct trauma to the tendon, osteoarthritis and even bad posture may be contributory factors.

Diagnosis

Often the diagnosis is a clinical diagnosis with no elaborate tests required. The experienced practitioner
