Newent Plant Centre near Ledbury has a clutch of RHS Medals to its name. There are four gold medals for show gardens and numerous silver gilts, something the owner Mark Moir couldn’t imagine when he set up the business ten years ago this March. ‘Back then we were only half our current size’ he says, ‘but the word spread quickly and since then we’ve built up a large base of loyal customers.’ It’s not hard to see why. The nursery, adjacent to The Nest, stocks a beautiful range of plants and has become a specialist nursery for Heucheras. The friendly staff are always happy to spend time talking to you about suitable plants for your garden and how to care for them. ‘Whether you are a veteran gardener, or new to it, there is something here for everyone’ continues Mark. ‘Our plants are laid out with complementary varieties, showing which plants work well together and giving you inspiration for your own planting.’ As spring approaches, Newent Plant Centre has plenty of spring stock to bring some early colour to your garden. ‘New varieties are emerging all

CLASSIC INTERIORS OF MALVERN Mel and Graham Duncan have almost two decades of experience in flooring, after starting in business in their early 20s. Beginning in the year 2000, they’ve taken Classic Interiors from strength to strength, which today boasts an extensive showroom with a choice of thousands of different floor coverings.
CARPETS & FLOOR COVERINGS
‘Since we opened, we’ve survived everything from the economic downturn to the floods of 2007!’ jokes Mel. ‘We’ve moved with the times, always stocking quality floor coverings, with a range of prices to suit the budget of every customer.’ Classic Interiors stocks a wide range of Luxury Vinyl Tiles, with finishes of the highest quality that mimic wooden and stone floors. They also have an extensive stock of carpets with a mix of wool and synthetic finishes. ‘Over the years, the synthetic finishes have improved’ says Graham, ‘offering a durable floor covering with a soft feel. Some people still prefer natural materials, and as well as wool carpet we have ranges of sisal and wooden flooring.’

01684 770336 07557 105233 Graham’s family has a long history in floor coverings; his father worked for Victoria Carpets in Kidderminster, whose carpets they still proudly stock in their showroom today. ‘Choosing the right carpet or vinyl floor covering is all important’ continues Mel. ‘It’s an effort and expense to fit and so it has to be right.’ Classic Interiors gives you the option to browse their vast range of flooring, with helpful advice if you require it and samples to take home. They can measure your floors before quoting and arrange fitting, as well as give advice on aftercare. If you’re thinking of changing the floors in your home, pop in to Classic Interiors on the Worcester Road in Great Malvern and have a chat with Mel and Graham.

All About...
ledbury e-bikes Ledbury has a new electric bike loan scheme. Its run by a small group of volunteers and one of them, Dilys Merry, tells us more.
How does the scheme work? The idea is simple. We want to give people the chance to try out an e-bike, discover how good they are and see how using it can fit into their daily lives. We are offering the chance to borrow our e-bike for two weeks free of charge, during which time you can get used to it and find out how often you use it. We are helping people over the gap between thinking it’s a good idea and actually riding one, which might otherwise not happen if you find the initial outlay daunting.
What’s it like to ride an e-bike for the first time? I was surprised at how easy it was and a lot simpler than I expected. For example, you have control over the power provided by the motor, by selecting anything from no assistance, to slight assistance, to full power. It really irons out the hills around Ledbury and makes cycling into wind a breeze (excuse the pun!) What this means is that if you haven’t cycled for a long time, or are not particularly fit, you can still cycle from A to B. Another thing that surprised me is the simplicity of recharging the battery – you simply remove it from the bike and plug it into a socket at home.
What’s so good about an e-bike? They’re great fun to ride. Many converts reckon it actually improves their fitness as they get out on the bike more regularly and commuting to work by e-bike proves a big money-saver. On average it costs about 2p to recharge which is the equivalent of 1,000 mpg, and can be made even greener if you use renewable electricity for re-charging. Anyone who feels that cycling is just too energetic for shopping, getting to work, or enjoying our delightful Herefordshire country lanes should give electric bikes a try.
18
How did the e-bike scheme come about? I’m a member of the local car sharing club run by Malvern Hills Car Clubs, one of many Transition Malvern Hills energy saving projects, including an e-bike loan scheme. The Ledbury Area Cycle Forum provided the impetus to extend the loan scheme to Ledbury. The bike was funded thanks to the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ scheme running in our local store, together with help from Transition Malvern Hills. If you try the bike and like it, we offer advice to help you choose the e-bike that’s best for you. There is also a market in second-hand e-bikes that we have access to. Although I am already a keen cyclist, able to cycle up all the hills in the area without assistance, I was very interested and I plan to get an e-bike when I need it.
If you’d like to find out more: Call us on 07973 721809 Email robin@robincoates.com or Visit www.transitionmalvernhills.org.uk and click the ‘Electric Bike Loan Scheme’ tab

Charity
Tools for self reliance As a charity, Malvern Hills Tools for SelfReliance has a simple but life-changing goal. Its volunteers gather unwanted tools which are refurbished and sent to parts of the world where they make a real difference. Martin Blamire, the group’s Chair, tells us more. Firstly, a huge thanks to the many people who have donated tools and supported us so far, especially Malvern Seed Swap and Malvern Rotary Club. Please keep them coming! The generous donations of unwanted tools made last year have enabled the charity to send many hundreds of refurbished hand-tools plus almost £1,000 to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. We have already sent three full loads of refurbished tools and sewing machines to the head office of Tools for Self-Reliance in Southampton and onwards to partners in Africa. Through local sales of surplus items, we have also sent cheques towards the purchase of welding kits and to support a new project in Sierra Leone.
20
We now have five regular volunteers at our Wednesday morning sessions where we sort and refurbish. There are two priorities for 2019 - to find a larger workshop and to increase the size of our group, bringing new skills and ideas. We especially need to build a Sales Team to hold sales at local events and raise money from selling tools not presently needed in Africa. At present it is mainly tools for carpenters or mechanics and sewing machines that are being urgently requested by our partner projects in Africa, but please call me to discuss whatever you would like to donate or if you would like to join us. If you’d like to find out more about how to donate or help the local group, call Martin on (01684) 540491. You can also visit the national charity’s website:

ELY memorial fund The E.L.Y. Memorial Fund supports families in Herefordshire who lose a son or daughter, aged between 17 and 25, in a road traffic collision. This year, they’re planning to carry out more road safety training as well as raise funds to help more families. On the 30th September 2010 the police knocked at Ange & Steve Tyler’s door, bringing harrowing news. Their only daughter Emma Louise Young, just 23 years old, had died in a car crash on the road between Ledbury and Hereford. The emotional turmoil brought financial challenges. Emma died Intestate and without life insurance. Emma’s funeral cost almost £5,000 and in this instance, her Nan was able to help, but many people find themselves with no financial support whatsoever. The E.L.Y Memorial Fund was founded in memory of Emma, for the purpose of offering a one-off condolence gift towards funeral costs up to £3,000 to help families in Herefordshire if they lose a son or daughter, aged between 17 to 25, in a road traffic collision. For the past four years, Angela Tyler has worked alongside the Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Service to deliver the Dying 2 Drive programme. Aimed at giving key road safety messages to 15 and 16 year olds, Angela shares her own experience with the young people and she will be taking part again this March.
Building on this, the charity is now planning a Young Driver Experience day for 15 and 16 year olds who may be thinking of driving in the near future. They will be introduced to the basics of driving in a controlled environment, with a local driving school and team of instructors. As part of a pilot scheme, 72 students will take part in the event over three days. ‘We hope that such a scheme will be supported’ says Angela, ‘and will continue to be delivered several times a year to see long term benefits for Herefordshire.’ The importance of the charity’s work was brought home in the first four months of last year, when they helped four families with funeral costs for their children. To continue this work, a lot of fundraising is needed. Every year The ELY 100 cycle challenge takes place, with four routes of up to 100 kilometres, plus a 10k family ride. It will be taking place this year on Sunday 23rd June. The Charity Golf Day takes place at Burghill Valley Golf Club, which last year raised £3,200. This year’s event takes place on Saturday 20th July. Towards the end of the year, on 23rd November, the charity’s bi-annual Charity Ball takes place at Alexander Park near Ledbury.

10 years of all about ‘So how did it start?’ is a question I am often asked when people find out I run All About Magazines. Until 2009 my working life was spent in the voluntary sector, but with the arrival of two small children work had to change, which is when the idea of starting a community magazine came along. I really liked the fact a magazine could contribute something to the local community, while helping local businesses at the same time. I was nervous about the idea of starting a magazine, but I took the jump just before Christmas 2008. I gave myself two months to produce the first magazine in time for March and I spent £500 on software to create adverts and to layout the magazine. I had to quickly learn how to use the software and with the money invested, there was no going back! As soon as the New Year came, I had to start selling advertising space, to pay for the cost of
printing. Fortunately, local businesses loved the idea and so the first magazine went to print on time. Together with family and friends, we then delivered 2,500 magazines to homes around Cradley and Colwall. Things have grown a lot since then. Today we print 32,000 magazines, in three entirely unique editions covering St Johns and villages, Malvern and the area West of the Hills. My job is still designing the adverts, laying out the magazine pages, chatting to local businesses and readers plus a hundred and one other tasks involved in running a small business. An idea that started in a back room, with just me and a computer, has today grown into a business employing five people, plus work for dozens of deliverers. Tina takes care of a lot of the sales of
Here is what some long standing customers have said: The book has been brilliant for promoting my business. To be honest, mainly due to its good reputation. I would highly recommend the book to anyone as it has generated a lot of work for me with customers then recommending my services to others. Thanks to Sascha and the team at All About Magazines for your help and support in helping to promote my local business. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary. Wesley Small, W.S.S Roofing & Building Solutions Ltd 01684 541366 / 07926 861565 As a new business start-up, we were very grateful to Sascha and All About Magazines for finding an advertising package to suit our budget. The phone is always busy after the magazines hit the doormats and we really appreciate the business All About Magazines generate. Colin Hadley, Oven Wizards Hereford & Worcester West 01885 400337 / 07812 440780 I have been advertising with All About since they started 10 years ago, and have nothing but praise for Sascha and her team. They are consistently helpful and professional, and assist with any changes required very efficiently. I wish them every success for the coming 10 years and beyond. Matt Scriven, Branchworks Tree Surgery 28 808 121 / 01684 437481 07931
I knew when I saw the magazine back in 2009 it was a platform I wanted my business associated with, and I haven’t been disappointed. Sascha and her team have been fantastic to work with, they helped promote our business to the unsuspecting public in 2010 and we haven’t missed a month since. It has been a privilege and an honour to be part of such a fantastic product, thank you Sascha for your vision and delivery. Rob Weale, Smith Weale Associates, Independent Financial Advice Practice 01684 577037 We have supported each other from the beginning and the amount of business advertising in All About has generated for me over the years has been astronomical. I would never not advertise in the magazine. It raises my profile, its professional style and attitude fit my business values, it works hand in hand. Thank you very much Team All About, it has been brilliant to be part of the 10 year journey. Congratulations from Nick, That Smy Plumber - 07914 245015
advertising space and looks after our customers, Julie works from the office on finance, sales, our website and a host of other tasks. In 2013 my husband James came on board to look after the articles, What’s On listings, and magazine distribution, which is also managed by Mike in Malvern and Martin and Diane in Worcester. We are supported by a huge team of deliverers who walk the streets in all weathers to deliver the thousands of copies through the doors of homes each edition. A big thanks to all of them! I would genuinely like to thank the staff for their hard work and support over the years. It is only thanks to them that All About Magazines continues to thrive. There’s also a big thank you to you, dear reader, for reading the magazine and using the businesses and services advertised
in the magazine. Not only that, our readers contribute so much, from articles and events to ideas and comments about how we can constantly make the magazines even better. Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank our customers, the businesses and individuals who advertise with us. In ten years we have supported more than one thousand businesses locally, some of which are long-established, longterm customers and some who are starting up. We are proud to be a local, independent company, celebrating everything that’s good about the area. My work as magazine editor over the past decade has been a pleasure. I’m looking forward to the next ten years of supporting everything local!
Many many congratulations to Sascha and all the Team at All About Magazines on your 10th Anniversary. It’s a great achievement. (We are also celebrating 10 years of business in March too!) We have been advertising in the All About Magazines regularly for several years now – it’s so easy to work with Sascha to update our advert for each edition. Customers always mention they have seen our advert so we know it works for us... GOOD LUCK for the future and at least another 10 years of All About Magazines promoting all things local to our area. Mark, Newent Plant Centre - 01531 670 121 We have been delighted with the All About West of the Hills magazine and with the personal service Sascha has given us over the last ten years - in fact we find it hard to believe that ten years have gone by! The All About brand has gone from strength to strength and we regularly receive good quality leads as a result of our advertising. Sascha and the team are always on hand to help with any design or changes and pride themselves on giving the best of service to their clients, as we do to ours, and we wish them many more years of success! Gardening
green fingers
All About West of the Hills Magazine is ten years old! Right from the start, Bridget from Caves Folly Nurseries has appeared with a regular column that reflects on her life in the outdoors, together with gardening ideas for the weeks ahead. This month, in typical style, she’s already looking forward to the coming season. Spring is almost here and we are all eager to get outside in the garden and watch the magic begin. The bulbs are already growing well after such a mild beginning to the winter, so we should have some stunning displays. There is still plenty to do in the garden preparing for spring and here are some jobs to do in February. Cut back herbaceous perennials, deciduous grasses before new growth. Prune climbing and rambling roses. Prune any deciduous hedges or shrubs before the birds start nest building. Tidy Jasminum nudiflorum (winter jasmine) shorten laterals to 5cms. Sow sweet peas in a glasshouse or cold frame for early flowers. Dead head winter flowering pansies and violas in pots. Finish clearing dead leaves etc. from the borders. Sow vegetables such as Broad Beans, Salads, Leeks, and Onions under cover for early outdoor planting. To reduce club root on Brassicas, apply lime to soil at 270gm per square metre. Start warming soil for early planting by covering soil with polythene or cloches. Prune Autumn flowering Raspberries back to ground level. Finish any landscaping, construction work. Here are jobs to do in March. Cut back perennials such as Penstemon, Lavender and Perovskia. Prune Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses. Divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials. Prepare ground for sowing a lawn (allow at least 4 weeks for the ground to settle). Continue mulching borders with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, before growth starts.

Sow early crops of cabbage, Brussels, Celeriac, Leeks, Onions and Peas in the green house to plant out later. Peppers, Chillies, Aubergine, Tomatoes can be sown in a heated greenhouse. They will germinate at 21 celcius and need to be grown on at 17 celcius. Don’t be tempted to direct sow veg too early. Wait for the soil to warm up first. Chit potatoes and place in a cool place with moderate light. Plant out early to mid-April. Plant out soft necked garlic (Tuscany white, Solent White) cultivars. Plant out Asparagus crowns in deep well manured trenches. Plant an Alpine trough they provide a lovely display in spring. Empty any permanent plants in containers and prune the roots or re-pot into larger pots in fresh compost. Lastly, don’t forget to do something for your local wildlife! Keep feeding the birds, they use lots of energy when mating and building nests! Sow hardy cornfield annuals in open ground. Be careful not to disturb any hibernating creatures when you are tidying up. This list should keep you out in the fresh air for a while!

Charity
home-start Can you help make a difference to the life of a young family? Would you like to do something rewarding for yourself by helping others? HomeStart Herefordshire needs volunteers to work with local families.
family that is referred to Home-Start is visited a minimum of 12 times, making sure the family is in a better place to move forward, by the final visit.
Having a good start at home is of upmost importance to children, but things don’t always run smoothly. It might be isolation, domestic abuse, multiple births, a child’s behaviour, school attainment, mental illness, self-esteem, disability, or a host of other reasons.
Volunteers give two or three hours a week for visits. Volunteers have fun, feel rewarded and honoured they are allowed into the life of a family. Volunteers are given excellent training and ongoing support, completing a course at an accredited level (a small cost is required for accreditation), a chance to join in with our social and fundraising events and make new friends.
This is where a Home-Start Volunteer can make a difference. The charity believes parents have the key role in creating a secure childhood for their children, but you could be the smile and reassurance a family needs to get through troubled times.
Before volunteers are matched with a family, an initial recruitment policy is adhered to. Volunteers attend a course of preparation, have an enhanced criminal records check and provide references to support their application. All out-ofpocket expenses are paid.
Volunteers tend to have parenting experience, are male and female, from all ages and backgrounds. Some train to volunteer as mentors and others may be experienced in specific fields, offering their support in different ways. Each

Legal advice
A Guide to Separating A breakdown of your relationship, whether you have children or not, is often one of the most emotionally complicated and stressful times of your life. If you find yourself facing a separation from your partner, whether you are married or not, then early legal advice can make all the difference to the outcome. Lucy Webley is a family law solicitor at Orme and Slade, with over 20 years experience. She is a member of Resolution (the national association of family solicitors). Lucy will guide you through every step of the process and aim to secure settlements without the need for Court. In order to get divorced or to dissolve a civil partnership, the following must apply: • your marriage must be legally recognised in the UK; • you have been married for over a year; • and one of you must live in England or Wales. Having sent a petition to the Court setting out your reasons, (provided your spouse does not object) a decree nisi will be granted by the Court. This means that there is no reason why the divorce cannot go ahead. Following that, a decree absolute is applied for which legally ends the marriage. There is usually no need to attend Court. A financial settlement will need separate consideration; whether your assets are large or small. Just because you are divorced, that won’t resolve financial obligations. It is always best for both of you to consider and agree upon a sound financial settlement. This will give you peace of mind for the future. If agreement is not possible, either by negotiation or formal mediation then the Court can assist as a last resort. If you simply lived together, different considerations will apply. Here, it is particularly important to take legal advice if you have children together or own property. For disagreements involving arrangements for children, the Court always has to look at what is in the best interests of the child. In the majority of separations, arrangements can be negotiated successfully between the parties or through Mediation. If not then an application to the Court can be made. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Lucy Webley at Orme & Slade: lcw@ormeandslade.co.uk or 01531 632226

Financial advice
Making Tax Digital By Andrew Tannatt Nash As we enter the second month of 2019, it is time to add a late, but very important item to our New Year’s ‘to do’ list. It is now less than 90 days until the first phase of Making Tax Digital, or MTD, which comes into effect for businesses and sole traders who are VAT registered and have a turnover above the current VAT threshold. The vast majority of these businesses are required to maintain digital business records and to submit VAT returns to HMRC using MTDcompatible software for accounting periods starting on or after 1st April 2019. We all know that major changes bring uncertainty, especially if you have always handwritten financial transactions or paid taxes by cheque at the post office. But there are many benefits of maintaining robust digital records, including more accurate forecasting and being able to review a business’ viability at a glance. This should enable your accountant to support you to focus more on strategic issues and to add value to your business. In an environment of ever-growing competition, the need for ‘real-time’ insights into businesses, as we move forward into a digital world, has never been more important. Hand-written ledgers and complicated spreadsheets are now archaic and have gradually been replaced by online software designed for a specific purpose. This has ultimately made it easier for business owners to streamline their financial processes, allowing the accountant to process the data far more easily which should improve the speed, production and most of all the accuracy of accounting records. These can then be readily inspected, if called for, by HMRC and other regulatory bodies. Businesses operating below the mandated threshold, should also consider embracing the change to reap the benefits. So, if you are not ready, can you assume that your accountant will sort it out? Ultimately the legal requirements lie firmly with businesses to comply. Rather than stalling the process, which is only going to delay the inevitable, the next step is to find a software provider, research some training in MTD or speak to your accountant. You can visit Andrew at The Practice in Ledbury for more information at 7 The Southend or call 01531 631380 www.thepracticeledbury.co.uk
