Since then, our independent publishing company has grown to three titles, covering the Colwall, Cradley, Ledbury, Malvern and Worcester areas. As well as supporting local businesses, we celebrate the many good things going on locally. This magazine has everything from pancake races to a village exhibition! There are also extra prizes on offer in two competitions run by The Malvern Spa and Colwall Park Hotel alongside our regular Theatre competition. Take a look at Pages 14, 16 and 54 for details. 4. the english symphony orchestra The English Symphony Orchestra returns to Malvern Theatres at 7.45pm on 15th February for a programme of Romantic orchestral favourites alongside one of Britain’s most gifted and popular violinists. Young superstar virtuoso Chloë Hanslip joins the ESO for a performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major. Hanslip began her violin studies at the age of two and signed her first record contract with Warner Classics at the age of 13. She has established herself as one of today’s most popular and well-rounded artists, with a huge discography to her credit. Also on the programme is Schumann’s evergreen Rhenish Symphony, conducted by one of today’s leading Schumann interpreters, Kenneth Woods, and Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture.

Flicks in the Sticks has a new programme of films locally this February and March. In Colwall, there’s a Sunday screening of Hidden Figures (Cert. PG) starting at 3pm on 25th February. On Friday 16th February they’re showing Volver (Cert. 15) and Loving Vincent (Cert. PG) on 16th March, both in the usual evening slot. In Bosbury, My Cousin Rachel (Cert. 12) is being shown on Friday 16th February and Goodbye Christopher Robin (Cert. PG) on Friday 23rd March. If you’d like to subscribe to mailing lists with details of future screenings, email FISColwall@outlook.com (for Colwall) or pennyburrow@ btinternet.com (for Bosbury).

On 14th March, the ESO appear at Malvern Priory for a performance of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony and Haydn’s Mass in Time of War with the Academia Musica Choir. The programme also includes the world-premiere of Philip Sawyers’ powerful new tone poem, The Valley of Vision. Tickets for both events are available from the Malvern Theatres Box Office (01684 892277) or from www.eso.co.uk

FRAN DOIDGE WELLBEING COACH The route to true wellbeing is a sound mind as well as a sound body, according to Fran Doidge. After working for almost three decades as a therapist, Fran uses a combination of coaching together with massage and other physical therapies to help her clients. ‘Aches and pains will have a bearing on wellbeing’ she says, ‘while at the same time the body reflects mental and emotional stress. The two need to be treated together.’ Fran uses a number of techniques for coaching and helps clients find their own coping strategies to take away and practise in their own time. She helps many people deal with chronic pain and with conditions such as Fibromyalgia. ‘When a client is dealing with stress or difficult emotional problems, they might be struggling to tackle it by themselves’ she says. ‘I help people face up to issues in a gentle, caring way, with my therapies acting as a catalyst to help them on the road to a healthy life. It’s a drop of calm in the ocean of emotion.’ You can read more about Fran at www.coachingforwellbeing.co.uk

Business News AUSTIN & CO 2018 marks a year of big changes for Austin & Co of Malvern. The shop’s owner Sean Austin tells us more. After seven successful years on Belle Vue Terrace, our shop moves to new premises on Church Street in Malvern from February. Apart from the new shop, we have unveiled a whole new look to our branding and logo. Some things won’t be changing. We will continue to source some of the best greeting card designs from around the world, concentrating more on homegrown talent, with cards that are not only designed by British artists but also made in the UK. We have always seen our cards as affordable pieces of art that are not only sent but can become items that are kept and appreciated. Stationery is and will always be a feature of Austin & Co. We’re excited to bring unique brands to Malvern, including a new range of fountain pens and notebooks. For the past four years, we have been recognised as the UK’s most dog friendly shop by the Kennel Club. This is definitely something that will not change. Dogs and their owners will always be welcome at Austin & Co and Nessa will be there to greet her 4-legged pals to the shop. We will be increasing our offer to dogs and their owners, adding to our range of dog bowls, leads, collars, and treats. Above all, our dedication to customer service, our love for Malvern, providing value for money, and our commitment to shop locally will not be changing. We look forward to welcoming you to the new shop on Church Street. You can follow our progress on our facebook page at www.facebook.com/austinandco

Feature

ledbury u3a With outings, monthly talks and specialist interest groups, Ledbury University of the Third Age (U3A) is a great way to meet likeminded people. It’s a place where retired and semi-retired people come together to share educational, social and creative interests in a friendly environment. To illustrate some of the benefits, Ledbury U3A has an apocryphal tale to share with us. arby and Joan were a married couple now in their late sixties, living in a lovely little village called Blissful Ignorance in Herefordshire. Not a great deal happened in the sleepy village, but Darby and Joan didn’t mind. Newly retired, they looked forward to spending time doing what they wanted to do.

d

Darby loved reading his newspaper, playing darts and dominos at his local and going fishing. Joan loved knitting, dressmaking, crafting and meeting the other ladies who lived in the village. They had joint interests and both were keen gardeners. Intellectually they were happy, Darby sometimes solved a few cryptic crossword clues and Joan was a puzzle book fanatic, but they had an uncanny feeling that something might be missing from their lives. Then, one day, they went shopping in the local town of Golden Opportunity and had a good look round. Golden Opportunity, to a large extent, was very similar to their village, but it seemed to have more going on. The town had a number of venues where activities and functions happened most days of the week. Many of the activities seemed to be organised by something called the U3A or University of the Third Age which, of course, Darby and Joan had never heard of, having lived for a considerable time in Blissful Ignorance. Activities included talks at the Monthly General Meeting on the third Thursday of every month, and over 40 Groups such as Science & Technology, Local History, Country Dancing,

18

Walking, Singing, a Recorder Consort, Play Reading, Drawing & Painting and Languages plus a Needlework Group run by Josephine Bloggs, one of their fellow residents of Blissful Ignorance. The sly old thing had never mentioned where she went off to every second & fourth Thursday afternoons of the month and many other times… now Darby and Joan knew. As soon as they got home they rang the contact number and very quickly discovered that U3A was what was missing from their lives. As well as going along to the various groups that interested them, if they wanted, they could even take part in the administration of Golden Opportunities’ U3A. The organisation was run by the members for the members and gave them every chance to do a lot of the things they previously felt were beyond them. Now why had Josephine Bloggs not told them about U3A? Well, sometimes you just want to keep some of the great things in life to yourself don’t you!

If you are interested in finding out more about the U3A in Golden Opportunity (otherwise known as Ledbury & District U3A) please ring our Membership Secretary on (01531) 633637 or look at our website www.ledburyu3a.org.uk

Well Being

great gratitude A few days ago my thoughts were wandering all over the place. I was remembering things to do, making lists and composing emails. I was in the middle of walking meditation, where the aim is to remain grounded in the present moment, and instead my mind was jumping wildly from one thought to another. In walking meditation I sometimes use the sense of touch to bring me back into the present moment. Becoming aware of my feet on the floor grounds me again. On that day of busy thoughts it wasn’t the physical sensation that lifted me out of my freneticism but a sudden awareness of everything I had received. The carpet my feet were padding into was donated. The floorboards beneath are two hundred years old, like the building. The hands that created the building are long gone but I am still reaping the benefit of their work. The sun was shining through the tall Georgian windows; I had nothing to do with creating the sun, and yet there it was sustaining me, and the whole world. Two words came to mind, “just this”. Everything I needed was already there. Everything I needed to be at peace was already there. When our minds are busy, or we feel disturbed, upset or anxious, we are often focussing on the one thing that has worked its way under our skin, and have forgotten about everything that we already have. Or we are comparing our lives to someone else’s (they always look happy on Facebook), and lose sight of what we have received and are receiving. Directing our attention back to what we have been given and what already supports us is a great antidote to this, and a great way of finding a little peace. Thinking about what we receive connects us to the whole of the present moment. Instead of only seeing the crack in the windscreen, we remember to see the beautiful view as well. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t repair the crack, but it can change how we feel and make things easier. We sometimes use discontent as a motivator. I don’t like this, so I’ll change it. I want to

20

By Kaspa Thompson be thinner, or fitter, or earn more money, or whatever, and then we plough energy into accomplishing that goal. For me the motivation that comes from dissatisfaction is unstainable. I put some energy into the project, and then I feel a little better, and the discontent goes and so the motivation goes, of Christmas Concert and the Magic project flounders. When I act from a place of celebrating what I have already the energy continues. There is always something to be thankful for. This morning I made the bed, or, I made it into my office, or I cleared my inbox. Reminding myself of the little victories brings an energy that can carry me into the next thing on my to-do list. Writing a list of what we have received in the last week, or in the last 24 hours, is a great way of keying ourselves into this kind of awareness. Research has shown that it’s better to spend a longer time writing once a week, than writing a short list each day. Why is this? I think because writing a short list we can become complacent and list the same things over and over again. Writing a longer list encourages us to really interrogate our position. The list of what we have already received is endless. Try it out for yourselves: think of what you have already received, and see how it makes you feel.

drop scones Also called Scotch Pancakes... 1. Sift flour and salt into bowl, add sugar and mix to smooth creamy batter with the whole egg and half the milk. Stir in the rest of the milk. 2. Brush large heavy frying pan with melted butter, heat on a moderate heat. Drop small rounds of scone mixture (a table spoon works well for small scones) and cook until bubbles show on the surface and start to burst (2-3mins). Carefully turn over and cook for a further 2 mins. 3. Pile cooked scones in a clean folded tea towel to keep moist and warm for immediate serving 4. If serving sweet (with butter, jam, golden syrup, honey, peanut butter, chocolate spread...), add 1 level tablespoon of caster or brown sugar to the batter and replace the salt with 1 tsp mixed spice. 5. If serving savoury (with scrambled egg, smoked salmon, cream/goats cheese, bacon...) then add finely chopped rosemary and black olives or 1tsp mustard powder and a handful of grated cheddar cheese. Top tip: Make the batter a few hours earlier and leave to stand before cooking the scones.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX

THE PRACTICE

By Andrew Tannatt Nash

ACCOUNTANCY PRACTICE

As we say goodbye to yet another Christmas, receiving some wonderful gifts and exchanging or donating some less needed gifts, spare a thought to another sort of gift in the form of a capital asset. Most people know that if they sell certain types of assets, they are subject to Capital Gains Tax. People are not always aware that they can face a Capital Gains Tax bill when they give an asset away or even, in some cases, when it is simply destroyed. The person giving the gift and not the recipient can be liable for a tax bill. It can, for example, occur when a valuable item of jewellery or an antique with a value of over £6,000 is gifted. I sometimes encounter this when parents gift shares in the family company to a hard-working daughter or son. So what exactly is Capital Gains Tax (CGT)? This tax is relatively new, having been introduced in 1965. In general terms, a capital gain will arise when a person disposes of a capital asset and makes a profit – so the tax is paid on the profit when you sell or dispose of something that has increased in value. The rate of tax you pay varies from 10% to 28%, depending on the type of assets that you dispose of and your other income.

LOOKING FOR AN ARCHITECT?

Keeping it in the family You don’t usually pay tax on gifts to your husband, wife or civil partner, however, you do usually pay tax on gifts to other family members. Don’t panic! The good news is that every individual has an annual exemption for CGT. This is £11,300 for the current tax year. In most cases you are also allowed to offset capital losses against your gains. In some cases the recipient can pay the tax instead of the donor when they eventually sell the asset. Through careful planning and professional advice, in advance, you can minimise the tax liable on that gift to your deserving recipient. Sport Local

ledbury swifts For more than 30 years, Ledbury Swifts Football Club has trained countless numbers of young people and organised countless more games. The Club was formed in 1987 by Ian Colwell and Phillip Hodges and originally played from the Ledbury Town Ground.

s

Since then, various sites have hosted the club and its now settled in at Ledbury Rugby Club’s ground on Ross Road. Here, they play on 5, 7, 9 and 11-a-side football pitches, and during winter training also takes place on the artificial pitches at John Masefield High School twice a week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There are currently around 250 youngsters who are playing members of the club, ranging in age from Under 6 to Under 17. There are 12 age groups for boys and 4 for girls. The club plays in the Hereford Junior Football League and the Hereford Girls Football League. As well as the pitches at Ross Road, the club manages the New Street Site, providing facilities for both Ledbury Town and Ledbury Town Reserves. When the pitch can stand the wear and tear, the club plays its Under 17 team games and 11-a-side cup matches. Over the past few years the club has achieved the expansion of girls’ football, with four teams now playing regularly. Last season, the Under 17 team (now the current U17 team) won The Stuart Sheenan Cup. There are further achievements and Tom Fairclough who is one of the club’s referees won an award as HFA Top Saturday Ref of the year (2016-2017). The club has forty Level One trained coaches and all club volunteers are DBS-checked and carry out a safeguarding children course as a minimum standard. The club currently holds a community charter standard award - this is updated on an annual basis, to ensure the club continues to meet the required standard and has

32

all the relevant processes and procedures in place. In June or July of each year the club hosts The Andy Kibble Tournament. Over two days, there are games between local girls and boys teams from the Under 8 to Under 13 age groups. There are plenty of other events as well. Every year there’s a run which alternately raises funds for Sport Relief and the club as well as its charity of the year. Lots of fundraising also takes place to take players on a trip to Sweden. You’ll see club members and their parents at events in and around Ledbury, raising money for the visit which takes place this summer. The club is constantly evolving and aims to meet the growing demand for sport as Ledbury expands. In the future it hopes to become a football development centre along with Ledbury Town Football Club. Of course the club wouldn’t exist without the many dedicated volunteers who help to run it, coach the young players and carry out a thousand and one other jobs, which all help to keep the club running smoothly. If you’re interested in helping out, you can email the club’s chairman Nick Fish at clubchair@ledburyswiftsfc.org.uk If you have a child who is interested in joining, please send an email to Georgina, the Club Membership Administrator at memberships@ledburyswiftsfc.org.uk

monkey island dreams 2 Seven years ago, Wellington Heath hosted a village exhibition. Called Monkey Island Dreams, it featured hobbies, crafts and art all produced by local people. It was so successful, it’s happening again this March. Anne Abbotts tells us more. After we held the event in March 2011, people were very enthusiastic about re-staging it after a gap of five years. In fact, seven years have gone by and so this March we’ll do it once again! The first event was very enjoyable and a success. We had around 40 people exhibiting and just managed to squeeze everybody into the Memorial Hall. There were lots of different items and demonstrations including sculpture, a model railway diorama, painting, woodwork, sewing, quilting and a lot more besides. Demonstrations took place throughout the day. It was a very well supported event which was enjoyed by all. Before Christmas we asked local people if they’d like to take part next March and we had a good

response. Among the many attractions will be model railways, quilting and a display on apple pressing. Displays vary from a single item to a table filled with several different hobbies. There will be a creative competition for children, with three different age groups. You don’t have to enter beforehand but can simply bring entries along on the day. We don’t charge an entrance fee but will leave out a collecting box for donations. Last time we raised around £300 for St Michael’s Hospice. This time we will be raising money for Acorns Children’s Hospice. The date is Saturday March 10th, 2018 from 10am until 4pm, at The Memorial Hall in Wellington Heath. You can read more on the village website, sites.google.com/site/wellingtonheath

Feature

K9 LANTERNS It sounds, in the words of the people who created it, ‘a little bit yukky!’ Nevertheless, this gas lamp in West Malvern has attracted much attention, thanks to the fact its powered by dog poo! It’s taken around three years of research and development, but as soon as local sustainability group Transition Malvern Hills released details about it last month, enquiries began from around Britain and further afield. ‘It has been a busy time with the media!’ says Brian Harper, who developed the system at his Sight Designs workshops in West Malvern. ‘On New Year’s Day I was contacted by a radio station in the West of Ireland. Since then we’ve been fielding calls and emails from councils and other bodies who think it might be the solution to problems with dog mess.’ Living next to a popular route onto the Hills, Brian was only too aware of the problems caused when people don’t clear up behind their dog. Together with other volunteers from Transition Malvern Hills, he decided to find a technological solution. ‘Galvanised by Lynn Jones of our gaslamp group, The Gasketeers, we decided to look into how we might power gas lamps from biogas’ continues Brian. ‘Nathan Burlton found there had been an art installation attempt to use dog poo in the United States, but we have approached it from a more technical and commercial perspective.’ Funding from the Malvern Hills AONB helped kick-start the project. A visit to a national conference put the group in touch with a helpful manufacturer of small scale bio-digesters, a compact piece of machinery which can breakdown the dog poo (and other materials) to create biogas. Further adaptions to the biodigester were then added to create The K9 Bio Lantern System. ‘We’re now in the public testing stage, hence the initial publicity intended for Malvern residents

36

which went much further’ says Brian. ‘It is easy to use, simply pick up a free bag, scoop up, drop into the digester and walk away. We want to see the reaction of dog owners to the system and how it operates in different seasons, from winter through to summer. The signs are good’. Much data is being collected and used to finetune the design. Later this year, the group will be manufacturing the systems for use across the UK and beyond.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Use one of the free paper bags to collect your dog waste.

Place it in the hopper and turn the handle anticlockwise five times. The bio-digester breaks down the paperbag and dog waste, creating methane gas (for the lamp) and a liquid fertiliser.

Gardening

green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is getting ready for the gardening season to start again. As I write this we are still in the grips of winter but there are signs of spring, with bulbs such as Snowdrops and Aconite showing buds. February is the ideal month to get all those construction jobs in the garden finished. Cut back any herbaceous plants and tidy up borders, but watch out for hibernating hedgehogs and cover them back up if you unearth them! Here at the nursery we will start to pot all the young plants we have raised from seed and cuttings at the end of last year. So many of our ornamental plants are imported into the UK and with plant diseases finding their way here, I have been trying to ‘do my bit’ by propagating as many plants as I can from my own plant stock as well as from seed. You can do this at home as well, it is very rewarding to raise a plant from seed and see it flourish in the garden. Last year I was tempted by some Cucamelon seed. Initially they were a disaster, they germinated well and then sat still for weeks. As they originate in Mexico I expect they were disappointed with the weather. I missed selling them at the Malvern show and ended up giving them away to customers and friends. In the summer we were all rewarded with hundreds of tiny little melons which tasted a bit like cucumbers. They were great in salads and used in a salsa with tomatoes and chillies. This year I have been tempted to try some Goji berries, so let’s hope these need less a tropical climate. Jobs in the ornamental garden Make sure garden birds have food and fresh water. Clean dishes and feeders regularly to avoid diseases such as bird pox. Cut back late summer flowering Clematis to about 30

40

centimetres from the ground. Prune roses to promote strong young flowering stems. Cut back any old foliage on grasses such as Miscanthus. Prune summer flowering deciduous plants such as Buddleja, Caryopteris, Santolina, Penstemon and Lavenders. Sow annuals in plug trays and sweet peas. Vegetable garden Prune autumn raspberries, cutting all canes down to ground level. Force rhubarb for sweeter early stems by covering the crowns with straw and a container to exclude the light. Complete pruning of apple and pear trees, gooseberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants. At the beginning of March sow tomatoes, peppers and chillies in a heated propagator. Sow early leeks, early onions, cabbage, peas and lettuce under cover. At the end of March sow broad beans, peas, cabbage, parsnip, beetroot and spinach under cloches when soil has warmed up. With spring about to burst and the weather warming up there is a lot to look forward to outside in the garden.

Why Practise Yoga? By Jo Harper Potential students often ask this question. Many imagine Yoga is only for people who are very supple or ‘bendy’. However, providing that one joins a class of an appropriate level taught by a well-qualified teacher, anyone can reap the nurturing benefits of this ancient practice. Many specialised Yoga classes are available, including chair based classes for less mobile students, classes for pregnancy, the ‘gentle’ years and back pain. When I became a Yoga student 40 years ago my practice was very different to that of today. I have been very fortunate to have studied with many inspiring teachers to whom I am eternally grateful. My practice evolves to reflect my changing personal needs, physical, mental and spiritual. Initially my focus was Asana (physical yoga postures). In spite of stressful times running a business and then as a school teacher, I often went home before relaxation at the end of the yoga session – the element I now realise that I most needed! I became aware that my life was

more balanced when I attended a regular Yoga class. I began to study the philosophy (8 limbs) of Yoga and to develop breath work and meditation. I also stayed for relaxation! By 2004 Yoga had become so important to me that I undertook the 3 year British Wheel of Yoga Diploma training and subsequent modules in Pranayama (breathing), Meditation, children’s Yoga and pregnancy Yoga. I gave up my day job and began teaching Yoga in Hertfordshire and then in the Malvern area from 2009. I completed the specialist Yoga for Healthy Backs teachers’ training in 2012. I now teach this remedial back care programme at Bethesda Clinic in Ledbury to help back sufferers relieve and manage their symptoms. Why do I practice Yoga? To find balance, harmony and peaceful contentment. To build physical strength and maintain flexibility. To experience life more fully, noticing beauty in simple things. To quieten the chattering monkey which is sometimes my mind. OM SHANTI Jo Harper B Ed. BWY Dip. teaches Yoga in Malvern and Ledbury. 07976 882252 joyoga22@hotmail.com

Theatre News THE LITTLE

matchgirl AND OTHER HAPPIER TALES

LITTLE MATCHGIRL Win a family ticket (4) to this show at Malvern Theatres on Friday 23rd March at 7pm.

From the story by Hans Christian Andersen and Other Storytellers

Please answer the following question:

Emma Rice’s exquisite (Daily Telegraph) production comes to Malvern following its critically acclaimed premiere at Shakespeare’s Globe.

The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales are adapted from the stories written by which Danish author?

Struggling to keep warm on the freezing winter streets, our impoverished heroine begins to strike her dwindling stock of matches. Each match she strikes conjures a new story and while it burns she escapes into an enchanting world of magic and mystery. Inspired by the beautiful Hans Christian Andersen tales, we follow her through the spell-binding stories of The Princess and the Pea, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina. For adults and brave children alike this will be a truly remarkable theatre experience, full of music, laughter, puppetry and magic. Recommended age: 8+ The Little Matchgirl and Other Happier Tales is set to appear at Malvern Theatres from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th March. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk.
