Welcome to the February edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.
February 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com Photo front page: The Orion Nebula, taken by Chris Baddiley from his balcony. Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About West of the Hills is distributed to 2,800 homes and businesses Booking Deadline: For March - 10 February
In the middle of a cold & gloomy winter, there’s lots of inspiration in this month’s magazine to brighten up January. The cold weather of December could lead to hefty heating bills in January, but fortunately there’s all sorts of advice to hand. On Page 16 local company Clover is telling us about the benefits of double glazing. Colwall Greener, a local environmental group, works hard to help us improve the energy efficiency of our homes. They offer help and advice for absolutely free, not a bad offer at all! Following the success of their car share scheme, they’ve now extended it to electric bikes, which make cycling in our hilly part of the world much more or a joy. Finally, if your Resolution for 2011 is to sort out your financial situation then take a look at the centre of the magazine where Smith Weale Associates, a local firm of independent financial advisers might be able to help you out.
Happy New Year!

Carl Attwood:
Reverend Carl Attwood ‘Music is a subtle conveyer of meaning’ the Reverend Carl Attwood tells me over bacon sandwiches on a windswept and rainy morning in Colwall. I’ve popped round to his house to hear about a concert he’ll be playing in next month, but in the meantime the conversation swings between antique clocks, ecclesiastical history and Great Danes. I should add that somehow he manages to bring an air of fascination to all of these subjects. Clearly this is a man who was born to entertain! Carl was the Rector of Colwall from 1982 until stepping down three years ago because of ill health. ‘I have something called ‘CML’ he tells me, ‘a form of leukaemia. When I arrived this was a fabulous, thriving parish and we’re fortunate that it still is. Melanie (the new Rector) is gorgeous!’ The job clearly suited Carl, he got to know many people and under his guidance all sorts of local projects like Colwall Care were set up, but he insists everything that happened was very much a team effort. ‘Believe me, it wasn’t just me’ he says, ‘I suppose my job was to look at core parts of community activity and encourage people to build their own projects’.
a strict Roman Catholic and a remarkable woman’ reminisces Carl. ‘There were five pianos in her house, two of them back to back. She was a fine pianist, she didn’t believe in taking exams and simply told me ‘it’s all about playing at festivals’. The first piece of music I played for her was Chopin’s Nocturne in E flat’ says Carl, as he sits down at his own piano and knocks out a few bars. ‘She listened to me play and then told me never, ever to play it in the same way again!’ Carl’s new piano teacher taught him to dissect a piece of music note by note. ‘She taught me to listen. We spent four lessons just practising two bars of a piece’ Carl recalls. ‘She made me think about music and that’s the key to an outstanding performance. She didn’t need to push me, I love playing the piano’. Carl went on to complete a degree in music at the University of Bristol. He continued his studies at Oxford before ordination into the Church of England in 1977. ‘It was an exciting time’ says Carl, ‘with a liberal leading edge led by amazing people like Michael Ramsey and Don Cupitt. Being a priest is an emotive thing and at times difficult to know if you’re ‘doing it right’. There can be pressures on the tenets of your faith, but I suppose that shows you’re doing it right’. Despite a new role in the Church of England, Carl managed to continue his musical performances. ‘Somehow the
Carl grew up in a musical household at Wythall in North Worcestershire. His mother, who he describes as a powerful character, persuaded a local concert pianist to begin giving him lessons at the age of 9. ‘Her name was Mary Burton, she was

Concert in Colwall music took off alongside’ he tells me. Concerts followed in venues including the Wigmore Hall and there were performances on radio as well. ‘A good performance takes every fibre of my ability. There should never be a note played that’s not been thought about’. It wasn’t just about playing the classical repertoire. One evening Carl was at a friend’s party, tinkling away at the piano in the wee small hours, when a woman asked him if he might be able to do a job for her the next day. That woman was a producer on the Terry Wogan chat show on BBC One at the time. Carl had already built a reputation as a jazz musician, teaming up with the double bass player Duncan McTier. Despite the huge concentration needed to play jazz well, Carl admits it’s the classical repertoire that demands ‘one hundred percent’ of his ability. Carl is now busy practising for a concert next month, in Colwall, to raise money for charity. ‘It should be an auspicious moment,’ says Carl ‘the first big public performance for the new theatre at the Elms School and the first major performance for their amazing Kawai grand piano too’. Accompanying Carl will be Volante Strings, a locally-based chamber group.

Green Fingers Winter can be a challenging time for gardeners, but at Caves Folly Nurseries Bridget has been keeping herself busy with a little research. As I am writing this the weather is still very cold and we have warnings of snow again. Winter is a very difficult time for growers and people who work outside, this last year has been exceptionally demanding. But what do growers and landscapers do in places like Canada in the winter ? I tapped the question into the internet and as you would expect, an amazing amount of fascinating information was revealed. As far as I can see most Canadian farmers grow winter wheat which withstands temperatures as low as minus 40 celsius. Can you imagine how cold that is! Livestock farms are intensive and all inside, some of them have controlled heating systems. It was interesting to read surveys about the garden landscaping industry. 43% of landscapers found cash flow a problem in winter. There are a number of landscapers who take on ice and snow control jobs to keep the money coming in. Anyway, back to Colwall. January is a month of new

beginings. If we stick to our new year resolutions then we are all going to be slimmer and fitter and stop drinking too much cider! But in a few weeks time Spring will be here. Don’t be caught out, try getting those construction jobs done sooner rather than later. Finish cutting back dead perennials and dig over any weedy borders. Get the seed catalogues out and be inspired by exotic vegetables and drifts of colourful flowers. Clean the greenhouse out and stack up any reusable seed trays and pots. Don’t forget to feed the birds this month as they are probably running out of wild food after such an early start to Winter. Last of all, keep those eyes peeled and watch out for that first special sighting of snowdrops and Winter Aconites. Happy New Year to you all.

PUBLIC INFORMATION NOTICE Sponsored by
EAGER ELECTRICAL SUPERSTORE IF YOU WATCH OR RECORD TELEVISION PROGRAMMES VIA AN AERIAL THEN THIS EFFECTS YOU April 2011 will see the end of analogue television transmissions from the Ridge Hill transmitter, from 20th April 2011 you will only be able to receive Freeview Digital & Freeview High Definition (HD) programmes. In order to continue watching and recording terrestrial television programmes via your aerial you will need to upgrade your equipment. You now have several options‌. Convert your old TV to digital by fitting a DigiBox, remember if you own a Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) this will not work after April, it can be converted with a DigiBox but this over complicates the recording procedure and many people do not bother. Your VCR can still be used to playback old recordings but it’s recording days are now realistically finished. Changing your old TV to a new SONY LCD digital TV with a High Definition (HD) tuner built-in which will receive the new FREE High Definition service is another option, also investing in new programme recording equipment with either a SONY Hard Drive (HDD) DVD recorder or Freeview+ Personal Video Recorder (PVR) being the two common preferences. Recording and playing back TV programmes has never been easier with these devices and the picture quality is as good as live TV. If you already use a Freeview TV and/or recording device you will need to perform a full retune of all your equipment on 20th April in order to continue receiving and recording Freeview programmes. As switchover fast approaches it is important to be prepared and we at Eager Electrical will do everything possible to help you. We also offer advice as to what best suits your needs and can offer a full retuning service if requested, but early booking is recommended.

Combatting Flu Eat to help beat Swine Flu By Allison Maxwell from Colwall Just recently you can’t turn on the television or read a newspaper without hearing about swine flu. The recent scare has left many people asking what they can do to keep themselves and their family safe. As a nutritionist, I have always considered nutrient packed food is one of the best lines of defence against any kind of illness. A good diet can help strengthen your immune system. A strong immune system can help protect from disease. Clearly good hygeine is also crucial, which includes catching sneezes in a tissue, placing it quickly in the bin and washing hands to prevent the spread of viruses. But if you do become infected, what you eat may help to optimise the strength of the membranes in your ears, nose and throat that form an internal physical barrier against invading organisms. Protein-rich meat, chicken, eggs, fish, milk, dairy foods, pulse vegetables, nuts, seeds and soya-based foods all supply vital nourishment for the epithelial cells in these membranes. Three average-sized servings a day of any of these are important to maintain the integrity of these “barrier” tissues.
Vitamins Other options include tucking into plenty of fruits and vegetables such as carrots and pumpkins, apricots, mangoes, spinach and cabbage to maintain levels of vitamin A, another nutrient needed for strong respiratory membranes. Garlic contains allicin, formed when raw garlic is crushed or chewed. It appears to help to block the ability of viruses to invade and damage tissues. If the virus does penetrate these physical barriers, it is the job of an army of white blood cells to try to engulf viral invaders. Vitamin C appears to be especially important in playing a role in mobilising bug-eating macrophage cells. Other internal immune system bug-beaters include “T-cells”. The mineral zinc is crucial for their formation, with even a mild
deficiency being linked to more frequent colds and flu. Zinc is in eggs, beef, sardines, wholegrain foods and pumpkin seeds.
Sun and Sleep
In addition to a healthy diet, get the right amount of sleep. Sleeping helps your body repair its defences. Aim for around 7-8 hours every nigh, and try to stick to a regular bedtime, even at weekends. Also ensure you get out in the sun, which can be difficult at this time of the year but its still out there! Vitamin D comes from direct sun exposure and plays a major role in immune function, as well as protecting against major illnesses.
Avoid Stress!
Avoid stress! When you are stressed, your heart beats faster and your immune system slows down. Take time to relax whenever you feel the pressure. Finally, avoid adding toxins, this includes caffeine, cigarettes and alcohol. These things not only damage the immune system but can also lead to other serious health conditions.
Finally
Finally, a number of supplements can help boost the immune system or ease symptoms of flu. These include vitamin C with bioflavonoid, Echinacea, yucca and colloidal silver. Some of the above are not suitable during pregnancy or if you’re on medication. Please seek a Doctor’s advice if this applies to you.
Allison Maxwell has an MSc in Public Health Nutrition, a BSc in Nutrition & Food Science and 20 years experience in the field of food and nutrition. If you need advice ring 07771694490 for Private Nutritional Consultations.

All About... ...Feng Shui Ced Jackson from West Malvern has studied Feng Shui, Dowsing, and related subjects for many years. He is an accredited consultant with the UK Feng Shui Society and has served on its governing body.
Tell us a little about yourself?
One my great interests is dowsing - the detection of water or other materials using simple hand-held tools through which the qualities of a location can be identified. I was taught to dowse by my father, an agricultural engineer who designed farm buildings. When the foundations were dug they often accidentally cut through pre-existing drains and water pipes, and the farmers were not happy. My father eventually learned how to dowse, locate the drains and pipes, and ensure that no damage was caused. I have had an interest in dowsing ever since, and run Malvern Dowsers, the British Society of Dowsers’ local group; www.MalvernDowsers.org.
what are the origins of Feng Shui?
It comes from ancient China. Food production was crucial, and access to water (Shui) was vital for growing and transporting crops. Protection from the Wind (Feng) was also necessary. Choosing good locations with a decent balance of Wind and Water was vital, places where you would produce good crops and prosper. This environmental, or ‘earth/landscape’ aspect of Feng Shui
22
is very important, and dowsing can generate useful information about the land, whether it be agricultural or the site of a building.
How did you become a
practitioner of Feng Shui?
I am fascinated by the relationship between people and their environment, and undertook a Postgraduate Diploma at the Architectural Association in Urban and Regional Planning. This was followed by extensive training in Feng Shui, Dowsing, and Healing, the latter being my personal interest. Feng Shui is part of the huge store of Chinese wisdom that includes acupuncture and Tai Chi.
what sort of people ask for help with Feng Shui?
People interested in improving their health, becoming more prosperous, or making their home more supportive. Feng Shui can help identify trouble spots in a home, and ways to deal with them. I have helped people experience better quality sleep by removing ‘stressors’ within their home. This may sound like a modest achievement, but without decent sleep we become less robust and more vulnerable to disease. Sometimes a person is stuck in an unhelpful situation and Feng Shui can help move things on. After I’d visited one home the self-employed resident started to get considerably more work.
what do you say to people who doubt it?
Try it. There may be a relationship between your ‘personal’ problems and your immediate living environment.

Colwall Players Present:
Venue: Colwall Village Hall Time: Evenings 7.30pm, Matinee (Saturday) 2.30pm A Panto with a Real Bite! It’s a hard life for poor Heidi in Pumpernickel’s Tavern. The greedy innkeeper and his bossy wife treat her like a slave. And that’s not all . . . up in the castle Count Dracula and his ageing grandmother are planning a dinner party, with Heidi as the main course! Luckily she’s got the audience and other friends to help. Her faithful dog Crocodile, her best friend Frankie Stein and the handsome Prince Ludwig. The forces of evil never stand a chance . . . especially when Professor Crackpot transforms Frankie into a Superhero. The only real ‘horrors’ are a party of rowdy St Trinians type schoolgirls under the supervision of Miss Nelly, the pantomime dame. Their intentions are laudable but they generally create havoc wherever they go. However they join everybody else in an effort to save Heidi. This is a lovely family pantomime and guarantees a fun-filled time for all the family. The production is directed by Andrew Howie and runs from Thu 24th until Sat 26th February 2011. Tickets from John Goodwin Estate Agents: 01684 540300
