Some amazing community-inspired events are happening over the next two months. From Cradley’s Village Fete to The Colwall Ale House festival and West Fest in West Malvern, there are dedicated teams of volunteers working very hard to make it all happen. Well done to them! In Ledbury we have the annual Community Day in June and The Great Ledbury Celebration at the start of July, when the Poetry Festival comes to an end. In between all of that are many smaller, but no less popular events and activities. Take a look at our What’s On and Noticeboard pages for some inspiration.

MALVERN HILLS TOOLS FOR SELF RELIANCE Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance began life just a year ago with the aim of collecting unwanted tools. After sorting and refurbishing, these are sent to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Ghana and Zambia. So far, seven crates of refurbished tools as well as larger items of equipment, plus 14 sewing machines have been sent. The group also relies on fundraising and at the seventh Annual Seed Swap in Great Malvern on 14th April, over £500 was raised for the charity. This will be used to buy seven new welding kits which will be sent to projects in Malawi.

Business News THE DOGGIES DOODAHS Boarding and Daycare for Dogs When a dog stays away from home, the owners want to know it’s safe and happy. Together with her partner Carl, Melanie Smith set up her boarding and daycare service for dogs with a great deal of care. ‘We like to know everything about the dog we’ll be looking after – how they sleep, what they eat and how much exercise they need’ says Melanie. ‘After that, we ask the owner to visit with the dog and we offer a free trial for the dog to come and stay with us.’ There’s a choice of accommodation, with some owners opting for their dog to have its own room in the house. All sorts of people use the service, from those only needing a daytime or overnight stay, to longer visits while the owners go on holiday. There is a lot of attention to detail. The entrance to the property is double-gated to keep the dogs securely within the property. Melanie has completed a canine first-aid course and holds a licence to run the boarding service, issued by
Rowan, Jasper, Mutley, Ziggy & Luna the local authority. ‘We maintain a high standard of care, as we can be inspected at any time’ she says. The Doggies Doodahs is situated in the village of Cradley, with easy access from the main Worcester to Hereford road. If you’d like to find out more, you are very welcome to visit. You can speak to Melanie on 01886 880855, find them on facebook @thedoggiesdoodahs or visit their website, www.thedoggiesdoodahs.co.uk

All About...
colwall ale house festival 2018 Colwall Ale House Festival is back! There’s a week of events in the village, with Festival Day on Saturday 30th June. Sue Armstrong is one of the organisers and tells us more.
What’s in store this year? Starting on Friday 29th June, we have a weeklong series of events from talks to walks and singing, with a grand finale summer concert on 8th July. The Festival Day on 30th June offers fun for all the family with food and drink, arts and crafts, and much more. One of the highlights in the arena is the Paws for Thought Dog Display team plus, for car lovers, the addition of the Land Rover Series 1 Club in the Classic Car Cavalcade. New this year is the Marketplace where stallholders will be selling their home-crafted wares. So many local groups and organisations are taking part to make this a truly Colwall event. It takes place between 11am and 5pm.
Tell us the background to the event The Festival started in 2014 when the founder and Chairman Phil Hitchen decided to ‘Put the Ale back into the Ale House’. The first Festival was a huge success, and this was repeated in 2016. The events all help to raise money for the upkeep of St James Church and its Ale House. It also supports local businesses and charities who are given the opportunity to raise their own funds. The committee is just seven people, but the reach is so much wider. The Colwall Ale House Festival is a real community event and it’s all thanks to the efforts of many people.
Do you still need volunteers? Yes please. We are still looking for people to help out on Festival stalls, just for an hour or so. Help with setting up on Festival Day or de-rigging would be much appreciated. Please contact Sarah-Jane and Jeremy at dale1simon@aol.com or call (01684) 541615. Every offer of help is very welcome.

Legal advice
MIND HOW YOU GO! The Supreme Court has recently given judgment in a case called Robinson v Chief Constable of West Yorkshire which examined afresh the legal principles behind the concept of negligence which is almost always required in order to successfully pursue a personal injury claim. In 2008 Mrs Robinson (who was then 76 years old and frail) went shopping in Huddersfield city centre but got inadvertently caught up in the arrest of a suspected drug dealer by four plain clothes police officers. The officers decided to arrest the suspect outside a bookmakers, he resisted and as the five men tussled they moved towards Mrs Robinson with one of the officers backing into her and knocking her down and with all five men then landing on top of her. Mrs Robinson sued the police for damages in respect of her personal injury alleging that the officers had been negligent in the way they carried out the arrest. When the case came before the Court of Appeal the court considered an earlier case from 1990 called Caparo. The Court of Appeal took the view that it would not be fair, just and reasonable to impose a duty of care on the police towards Mrs Robinson as, in effect, this would prevent them from doing their job by, in this case, arresting suspected drug dealers. The Court of Appeal therefore rejected Mrs Robinson’s claim. However the Supreme Court overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision instead placing reliance on evidence given at the original trial by one of the arresting officers that there was a risk that the suspected drug dealer would run away and that there was therefore potential for harm to members of the public if he did try to escape. The officer concerned said that if it had appeared to him that someone was in harm’s way he would have walked past the offender without effecting the arrest but, although Mrs Robinson was only a yard or so away, the officer had not noticed her. In the media we often hear criticism about the “compensation culture” but many people might regard it as unfair if Mrs Robinson had not been able to claim damages for her injuries as she was just unfortunate enough to be caught up in a disturbing street arrest through no fault of her own. Jonathan Lewis has been a solicitor for 30 years and is an experienced personal injury practitioner. If you think you may have a personal injury claim to pursue please contact Jonathan who provides an initial free consultation: jl@ormeandslade.co.uk

Recipe
tea-time fruit scones A recipe from Meg Edmunds at Roots At Roots we make A LOT of scones! There is nothing quite as comforting as the wafting aroma of baking scones and they really are simple to make. With a few store cupboard ingredients you can turn an afternoon cup of tea into quite a treat which is always appreciated by a friend calling in, or in my case, particularly enjoyed by children after a long day at school.
Ingredients 450g Self-raising Flour 75g Butter 50g Sultanas 1 tbsp Caster Sugar
Transfer the scones to the lined baking sheet. Dust with a little flour and put straight into the hot oven. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a cooling rack before serving with whipped cream and strawberry jam in that order (of course!).
Pinch of Salt 325g Milk You will also need a 6cm cutter (plain or fluted), a baking tray and some silicone paper.
Pre-heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Light and fluffy scones require a gentle touch! Using the tips of your fingers, rub the butter into the flour until there are no large lumps. Then add the caster sugar, pinch of salt and sultanas, mix well. Check that the oven is up to temperature before adding the milk to the dry mixture. Once the milk is added work quickly to combine the ingredients into a rough dough and turn out onto a floured surface. Bring the dough together and knead through three or four turns, just until the dough is smooth and fully combined. Flatten the dough (using your hands or a rolling pin) to a thickness of approximately 4cm. Cut the scones closely together to minimise the amount of re-working cut offs (I have a rule of no more than three re-works) to give 8 scones.

Gardening
green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is making the most of the long days with a long list of gardening jobs. Summer is here, the garden is blooming and the barbeque is out! This is the time to enjoy being outside and take time to savour the colours, shapes and scents of the flowers. For vegetable growers the satisfaction of growing and eating your own produce is so rewarding after all that hard work. There is always lots to do in the garden but try and spend some time looking at other gardens. Why not visit some National trust and NGS gardens and make a note of colour combinations and plant varieties that catch your eye. Plan a new border for the autumn or just add some different plants to spice an old border up! Don’t forget to take some pictures to remind you.
Do not cut spring flowering meadows before July. Salad potatoes may be ready for harvest. Keep ripening strawberries off the ground with a straw mulch (or cardboard will do). Regularly remove side-shoots on cordon tomatoes and tie plants to supports. Plant tender veg outside such as tomato, cucumber, squash and melons. Sow salads, herbs such as coriander in succession every two or three weeks. Only sow small amounts each time. Regularly hoe and weed to keep weeds under control.
Here’s some of the jobs you can be getting on with during June and July:
Sow biennials such as foxgloves and wallflowers to flower next year.
Regularly feed fruit, veg and flowers in grow bags or containers.
Enjoy the summer and make the most of these long evenings!
Mow lawns regularly, providing they are not suffering from drought.

Well Being
the peace of wild things When I sit on the hills and look out at the stunning views good states of mind arise naturally. When I go out into the deep countryside and look up at the night sky I am awestruck. To see the arm of the Milky Way stretching through the sky, fine points of light and a soft fog as the many stars blend into one another, is to be reminded of how vast, powerful and wonderful the universe is. Sometimes I get the same sense when I am walking on the hills, when the view appears through a gap in a wooded trail, or when a wildflower greets me from the side of the path. I am moved to gratitude as I see the natural world continually offering itself to me. The natural beauty of the landscape is mostly the end process of millions of years of geology, biology and evolution. Personally I had very little – if anything – to do with bringing it into being, and yet here it is! Sometimes I moved to heartbreak too, when I see how little we offer in return, how so often we take the gifts of the natural world for granted, and how our greed damages the global eco-system. This heartbreak feels like a healthy reaction – I am standing witness to how things are, and I am motivated to examine my own relationship to the natural world. Can I use fewer resources? Can I make my own garden wildlife friendly? Can I support the work of those who are engaged in taking care of the world? There are people deeply engaged in good work, and I am moved to gratitude when I encounter them, or remember them. Gratitude can also lead me to action, planting more wildflower seeds in the garden, signing up to support the RSPB or local Wildlife Trust, and taking others into the natural world to inspire them as well. At the end of June I am co-leading a mindfulness walking weekend in the Malvern Hills. We’re being funded by the Area of Natural Beauty Malvern Hills Sustainable Development Fund. Studies have shown that spending time in the natural world is as good as mindfulness

By Kaspa Thompson meditation for returning the mind to peaceful states. I’m not surprised, given my own experiences. How many of us make time to get outside? How often do we leave our insulated houses and cars and “come into the peace of wild things”? (As Wendell Berry called it in his wonderful poem) Take this article as an invitation to find your own peace ofMagic wild things; to go out into spaces where of Christmas Concert nature thrives; to make time to stop and connect with something other than the merry-go-round of modern life. Every morning I make a pilgrimage around the temple garden: I pay attention to the cow slips (have you seen how many there are on the roadsides this year?); I notice the tadpoles in the pond, and the water boatmen; I try to see if the ferns are any less tightly curled than yesterday; I hear the constant chattering of robins competing for territory. Go into your own garden. Or get a map of the hills from the tourist information centre and find a new path. Go on your own or take your family and friends. Connect with the natural world, let it move you to better states of mind, and move you to taking care of the world. The Mindfulness Walking Weekend is 30th June – 1st July. THE PRACTICE
By Andrew Tannatt Nash
ACCOUNTANCY PRACTICE
Important changes to VAT, that come into effect from April 2019, have been announced. This is being introduced as part of Making Tax Digital (MTD). The changes impact on businesses and individuals with trade or property income with an annual turnover of more than ÂŁ85,000. From 2019, businesses with turnover above the VAT threshold, will have to keep digital records and file their VAT returns via functionally compatible software. The new rules do not currently apply to other taxes but most accountants expect a further roll out of MTD sometime after 2020. Businesses can however accelerate compliance on a voluntary basis. Why is this happening? The government first announced MTD as a concept in the March 2015 budget. It was first heralded as a transformation of the tax system, which saw the end of the paper tax return. Why was it delayed? A consultation highlighted concerns raised by businesses and accountants and, after the election, the government announced a revised implementation timetable. What do you need to do? If you have engaged an accountant to prepare and file your VAT returns, it is highly likely that you are already complying with the new rules. It would, however, be sensible to check. If you are filing the returns online yourself you may need to take action to ensure compliance. Plan Ahead You still have plenty of time to put plans in to place, but it is important to act sooner than later. I would recommend that you start complying with the new rules as soon as possible. Your accountant will be able to support you through the process and provide suitable software. You can also obtain software directly from suppliers. Whilst this might seem a little painful at first, the concept should improve your accounting records and lead to the smoother production of year-end accounts. You can visit Andrew at The Practice in Ledbury for more information at 7 The Southend or call 01531 631380 www.thepracticeledbury.co.uk

Town Party
a Ledbury Celebration on Ledbury High Street – Sunday 8th July Food, Drink, Music, Poetry and Heritage Ledbury High Street is the place for a town party and food fair, celebrating all that’s best in Ledbury on the last day of the Ledbury Poetry Festival. Food and drink stalls will recall the markets of yore, lining Ledbury’s historic High Street leading to an entertainment area around the Market House. The poetry and music stage compered by comedy poet Rob Barrett will provide entertainment from 12 noon to 5pm. It features poets Kurly McGeachie (hip hop Shakespeare) and Nico Reznick plus music from the Ludlow Jazz Collective and SassCappella. LADs will be around to provide drama and local poets will add to the day. Watch out for Ledbury Fringe buskers, popping up almost anywhere with instant entertainment.
There will be thirty food and drink stalls along the High Street, celebrating some of the best local produce from the Three Counties. There will be food and drink to enjoy on the spot or to take home. The market will open at 11am and close at 5pm. Don’t forget to visit Ledbury’s heritage buildings including the Master’s House which is opening for this event. There’s also a Classic Car display, an art competition at the Market House and the children’s Box of Delights garden competition. Not to mention the cake cutting! Visit www.ledburyfoodgroup.org for the latest information and programme for the day. Public car parks will be open and free plus additional parking at John Masefield High School (by donation) and Ledbury Primary School.
