Welcome to the March edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

March 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com www.facebook.com/ allaboutmagazines Photo front page: Robin Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About West of the Hills is distributed to 2,800 homes and businesses Booking Deadline: For April - 10 March

I learned something fascinating about our part of the world while putting together this month’s magazine. It’s the story of how Wellington Heath gained the nickname ‘Monkey Island’, its connected to the construction work that took place on a nearby railway viaduct was taking place in Victorian Times. The name has been taken for a local craft exhibition, and it seems the people of Wellington Heath are a talented lot. On the first weekend of this month they’ll be showing off a wide range of local talent; you can read all about it on Page 22. Elsewhere in the magazine we’ve got a lovely feature on a local wildlife group, plenty of ‘What’s On’ ideas and of course we remain a showcase for the wide variety of local businesses who offer all sorts of products and services in our area. Now that the days are getting longer, make sure you have a lovely March!

Our local birds We’re coming into the time of year when nature is ready to burst forth at the end of a cold winter. In trees and hedgerows, in gardens and perched on telephone wires, birds are bursting into a frenzy of activity as, like us, they look forward to warmer, longer days. While many of us might only be vaguely aware of this change, for others this heralds an exciting time with a special fascination. For that reason, 11 years ago a group of local people interested in bird watching came together and formed their own group.

Blue Tit

‘I’ve been involved in the Bird Group since it started camera to see a red legged partridge. Sometimes we 11 years ago’ says Derek Turner. ‘I was also a head out locally for some bird watching. Over several founder member of the Colwall Village Society weeks there was a Water Rail that had arrived in and early on we had a talk by an ornithologist. The an area just below ‘The Kettle Sings’ café. Normally attendance was huge and three of us, all amateur they are only seen on open water so this was quite birdwatchers, wondered if people would be interested unusual. Its also rare to see them; more often you’ll in carrying out bird surveys. We held a meeting in the only hear them, they sound like a screaming child. If small room of the village hall, and well over 40 people you do manage to see them they look very ungainly, turned up! Ever since then we’ve had around 60 local almost as if they might topple over’. households involved. Not everyone does the survey, So what is it about birds that interests the group so there’s plenty of other activities too. Three times a much? ‘Its difficult to explain’ says Derek, ‘but the year we have a talk by song and the look of a bird a guest speaker, they is lovely. I’m a fairly recent are always fascinating, convert, once I began to “ In our talks birds have been the sometimes they’ve realise how fascinating it focus but quite a lot of people are been abroad and have was. A successful Closer to home, there are all kinds of birds and breeding programme in Wales has seen the red kite animals to see on our doorstep. ‘I got a lovely call a population recover and spread eastwards to our part couple of years ago from a house close to the railway of the world. ‘Sometimes they can been seen soaring in Colwall’ says Derek. ‘I dashed down with my over the hills’ says Derek, ‘on one occasion I’ve seen them as far east as Worcester’.

The group still carries out regular surveys. It’s very simple. ‘We do them in six monthly runs’ says Derek, ‘each household has a sheet of paper with a column for each month, if they see a blue tit on day one they put a tick in the relevant box. Its straightforward and uncomplicated, but very interesting to see the results. What we see in this part of the world almost exactly mirrors the results of national surveys of groups like

Barn Owl

and wildlife the RSPB’. While some birds thrive, others suffer. ‘Spotted Flycatchers have almost disappeared’ says Derek, ‘while other birds including robins and wrens are still thriving’. Other colourful and lively birds are regular visitors to local back gardens. ‘What you’ll see depends very much on where you live locally’ says Derek. ‘When I lived on the edge of Colwall I saw more than thirty varieties. Now I’m living in the middle of the village, usually I only see around six’. Some birds live in very tightly defined areas. Some places have hedge sparrows and just a few hundred yards away there are none. Some localities are inundated with starlings while people living just up the Goldcrest road will never see them. ‘Of course it depends very much on the sort of area they like to inhabit’ Derek explains. ‘It’s natural that house sparrows will be happy in the middle of a village as they prefer a built-up environment. In the same way, pheasants will only be seen on the edge of the

village and only rarely will they stray anywhere else’. Other regular garden visitors are brightly coloured green woodpeckers and the greater spotted variety will sometimes been seen in larger trees. At night you might hear the screech of a little owl, the call of a cuckoo in spring, or perhaps catch the silent glide of a barn owl at dusk. The group recently made the decision to expand its field of interest and has renamed itself the ‘Colwall Wildlife Group’. ‘We did this for the simple reason that our members are interested in things other than birds’ says Derek. ‘In our talks birds have been the focus but quite a lot of people are also interested in other wildlife and plants. We thought we’d widen the scope of what we do’. If you want to know more, on 10th March the group meets at 7.45pm in Colwall Village Hall. There will be a talk by Mike Wilkes on ‘Wildlife of Britain - from Autumn to Spring. Or ring 540379 (Anne) or 540318 (Derek)

Green Fingers Its time to start preparing your garden for planting and Bridget of Caves Folly Nursery has a few ideas about ‘maximising your plot’. At long last the garden is coming to life. Although at this time of year the soil is bare and inviting with lots of space to plant, somehow I always run out of space for everything I want to grow. I expect most keen gardeners find themselves in this predicament! There are however lots of ways you can maximise the spaces in your garden and increase your yield of flowers or fruit and vegetables. The secret of any sustainable planting is to start off with plenty of compost and well rotted manure, which provides the food for all your plants for the season. By planting in a successional pattern or by inter-planting you can make the most of small gaps between crops or perennials by using the space before the main plants start maturing. This can be done in the vegetable garden or the border. Bulbs are useful for early colour, plants such as Snowdrops, Anemones or Aconites will all grow in poor soil, thriving happily under trees and shrubs where other plants struggle. In the summer Annuals

such as Cosmos, cornflowers and larkspur can be sown in the same spaces over the top of bulbs such as Tulips and Daffodills. In the veg garden spaces between climbing beans (before they get too big) can be planted with fast growing plants such as radish and salads. Spring onions can be planted in amongst lettuce, while the lettuce helps to keep down the weeds, the fine leaves of the onion will not compete with it and so both grow happily together. Many of these principles are applied in Permaculture, mixing all types of plants together. For instance, rather than have your orchard in one corner of the garden and your veg plot in another, you could try planting rows of fruit trees or bushes such as raspberries and currants with rows of veg in between. For me, after all these years of gardening I still wonder at the miracle of creating all of this with just a few little seeds. So remember to fill those spaces and sow, sow, sow!

Rheumatoid Arthritis A different approach to eating might help deal with the symptons By Allison Maxwell from Colwall Have you ever thought that your joints felt more painful after a meal, only to doubt yourself after hearing that no evidence links food intolerances to rheumatoid arthritis? Well you are not alone! Many people have tried a natural holistic approach to addressing arthritis and some say they’ve had amazing results. My experience of working in complementary health clinics backs up growing evidence that suggests avoiding certain foods may help ease many of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. It is not easy and requires careful planning; it may be beneficial to seek the advice of a qualified nutritionist to assist with the changes. There are many different forms of arthritis but rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the joint or joints. Its chief symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness (sometimes causing deformity) and reduced mobility. It is an auto-immune disorder in which the body improperly rejects the synovial membranes that secrete the lubricating fluid in the joints. Often bone surfaces are destroyed as well. The body, in an attempt to heal, replaces this damaged tissue with scar tissue, which causes the normal spaces within the joints to become narrow, and the bones to fuse together. Although considered to be a genetic predisposition, natural health approaches can help with its management. There is a belief that specific foods lead to an excess of acidity in the body which can aggravate the condition. Sometimes mental and emotional issues will make matters worse.

Common foods to avoid

The foods that patients most commonly find to irritate their joints are the nightshade family of foods (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, aubergines). There are numerous others foods that once avoided have reduced the symptoms of arthritis in many sufferers.

Here are the main ones; • Food high in oxalic acid like cranberries and plums • Phosphorus-rich foods like red meat, red flesh fish, kidneys, liver, processed meat and soft drinks. Phosphorous rich food contains high levels of uric acid, which can aggravate the problem • Caffeine, as excessive use causes a loss of vital minerals and vitamins from the body • Fried food, margarine and vegetable oil can worsen inflammation • Alcohol should be avoided as it hampers calcium absorption in the body

Foods to eat

Eating plenty of greens and taking cider apple vinegar aids the body in obtaining a more alkaline balance. Foods with anti-inflammatory properties could help, including ginger, garlic, turmeric and apples. Further foods to recommend include; • Fruits especially rich in vitamin C such as strawberries, apples, peaches, kiwi, mango, cantaloupe melon and papaya • Vegetables rich in beta carotene such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, sweet potato and squash • Fish like salmon, mackerel, herring and tuna are rich in Omega 3 essential fatty acid. Flaxseed also contains Omega 3 • Unsalted nuts and seeds like walnuts, almonds, linseeds and pumpkin seeds • Pulses, lentils and brown unpolished rice • People with arthritis benefit a great deal from food rich in magnesium like apricots, bananas, beans, whole grains and leafy vegetables Eating a balanced nutritious diet helps support the body so it can heal itself naturally. While most arthritic conditions cannot be reversed, many people manage to reduce their pain by following simple dietary advice. One final important point to note; you should continue as normal with prescribed medication and consult with your doctor if in any doubt regarding your symptoms.

All About... ...Monkey Island Dreams

Monkey Island Dreams is an exhibition which offers the chance to see a large array of crafts produced locally in Wellington Heath. There was a similar exhibition in June 2002, not long after the new Memorial Village Hall was opened.

How did it get

the name ‘Monkey Island Dreams’?

The name ‘Monkey Island’ originates from the early 1850’s when the railway viaduct in Ledbury was being built. The workers on the viaduct swung down on ropes while building it and were known as ‘Monkeys’. Many of them lived in temporary accommodation in Wellington Heath and so the village became known as ‘Monkey Island’ locally. This wasn’t a compliment as the men were known for their fighting and drunkenness. Starting in the 1980’s, a group of villagers got together to put on fun village events and to raise money for charity under the banner of ‘Monkey Island’. This was very successful with thousands of pounds raised over the years for local charities. It even had its own national anthem which includes the words ‘Monkey Island Dreams’; it seemed an appropriate title for the exhibition.

w hat will there be to see? The exhibition is a display of the hobbies,

arts and crafts undertaken by the residents of Wellington Heath in their spare time. Villagers of all ages will be exhibiting a wide range of activities including photography, painting & drawing, sculpture, a model railway diorama, a hand built and fully furnished dolls house, cross stitch & needlework, fly-fishing, calligraphy, stamp collecting, glass engraving, quilting, patchwork cards, knitting, handmade furniture and woodwork of all styles including carving, chair making and hurdle making. There will be a kit car in the car park with a display showing the various stages of

22

construction. People might exhibit just one item or quite a number; some items will be finished and some still a work in progress. There will also be demonstrations of a wide variety of activities throughout the day.

Can I bring the kids?

There will be plenty for young people to do. A children’s competition has been organised and they can enter any creative item which is all their own work. A prize will be awarded to the most inspirational entry in each of the two age groups - 7 & under, and 8 to 14. For the day itself we’re organising a supply of homemade cup cakes to decorate and eat.

Are you impressed by the

variety of local people’s skills?

It has been quite startling to discover how busy everyone is with such a variety of activities. At the last exhibition there were about twenty exhibitors and we hope to have as many this time. We advertised around the village for entrants, in the end over thirty people have come forward and so the Hall will be full to overflowing. The most unusual exhibit this year must be a blouse made of dusters during the Second World War when fabric was hard to come by.

w ill items be for sale? This is primarily a display rather than a sale

but exhibitors are free to sell their items if they wish, for collection at the end of the day. There is no entry charge but there will be a box for donations if visitors wish to contribute. Refreshments will also be on sale and any proceeds from these will go to St. Michael’s Hospice.

The exhibition is taking place on Saturday 5th March at Wellington Heath Memorial Hall between 10am and 4pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and be amazed inspired! Please mention and All About Magazines when responding to adverts
