Armistice Day this year, on Sunday 11th November, marks the centenary of the end of World War One. As always, there will be commemorations at local war memorials and services in our local churches. In Ledbury, the annual commemoration takes place at the war memorial in the centre of town, with a parade at 10.40am before a short ceremony and the two-minute silence at 11am. Afterwards there will be a service in the Parish Church and a peal of bells will be rung from midday. The churches at Bosbury, Mathon and Colwall will be ringing half-muffled bells on Sunday, when leather pads are strapped to one side of each bell’s clapper. This produces the effect of one change being open and clear, while the next is muffled, making it sound like an echo. Local churches will have more details of commemorations and services that are planned.

Legal advice

Have you considered making a Lasting Power of Attorney? Lasting Powers of Attorney are important legal documents that allow you to appoint one or more people to manage your finances, or to make decisions about your health and welfare, when you are unable to do so. People tend to put off appointing attorneys, as they think they will never need the use of these documents! However, if for example you are injured or suffer a stroke and are either temporarily or permanently unable to make decisions or need help managing your finances, you will need someone to take on this role for you. If you have not made a Lasting Power of Attorney, the procedure of appointing someone to act on your behalf once you are unable to make decisions is more complicated, expensive and time consuming. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney; 1. Financial decisions 2. Health and welfare decisions You can choose to make one type or both. I have a Will so why do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney as well? Wills appoint executors to deal with your affairs after you have died, whereas Lasting Powers of Attorney appoint attorneys to deal with your affairs while you are still living. Everyone understands the importance of making a Will but Lasting Powers of Attorney are equally as important. If you would like more information about Lasting Powers of Attorney, please contact Lucy Yeomans at Orme & Slade Solicitors, ly@ormeandslade.co.uk or 01531 632226.

Charity

All About...

the herefordshire community foundation Every year The Herefordshire Community Foundation hands out grants to help the work of organisations across the county. Last year it made 120 awards totalling almost 180 thousand pounds. Any local group can apply and Philippa Spens, the Foundation’s CEO tells us more.

What are the aims of the foundation? We are a grant-giving charity which helps local voluntary and community groups. Our aim is to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged people in Herefordshire by connecting people who care with causes that matter.

Where do your funds come from? The Foundation looks after approximately 25 donor-directed funds. We are here to help those donors who want their charitable giving to be concentrated locally, secured over time and focused on specific aims. Some funds have been left as a legacy, others are set up by people living away from Herefordshire but with their hearts still very much in the county. As well as these funds, we also distribute grants for national programmes through the UK Community Foundation network, for organisations like Comic Relief and the Youth Social Action Fund.

Where do your grants go? We raise money for other local community and individual needs in four main areas: The Arts, Sport, Education and our Surviving Winter Fund, which distributes money to individuals and organisations helping those in fuel poverty. In November and December, all pensioners across the UK receive Winter Fuel Allowance payments. These are not means tested and if you don’t need the allowance, you can donate it to the Community Foundation to help those who are struggling with fuel poverty. Even if you don’t qualify for the benefit you can still make a donation. During the snow last winter, Age UK told us about an elderly couple who had run out

18

of oil for their heating and couldn’t afford any more. We paid for an emergency oil delivery and they were able to heat their home again.

Are there any local projects you can tell us about? Ledbury Food Group recently launched a photographic project featuring a year in the life of a local fruit farm. The costs of mounting the exhibition at The Master’s House were funded by the Stuart Heaton Fund at the Herefordshire Community Foundation (see photo). In Colwall we recently helped a project run by Colwall Community Church. Lots of young people come to their Friday night youth club which draws them in not only from Colwall but surrounding villages and Ledbury as well. The club leaders planned to send some of the older children to a summer outdoor activities camp and needed to raise the money to do this. They set about fundraising through activities like a charity car wash and we gave them a grant to top up the total. To find out more about the fund please visit www.herefordshirecf.org

Drama

the lady killers Colwall Players at Colwall Village Hall Freely adapted from the famous Ealing Studios Comedy of the 1950s, expect some surprises when The Lady Killers bring their sinister presence to Colwall Village Hall this November. In this gentlest of black comedies, we meet sweetly eccentric Mrs Wilberforce who lives alone with her raucous parrot, in a house built over the entrance to a railway tunnel at King’s Cross Station. When criminal mastermind Professor Marcus and a motley crew of misfits pose as amateur musicians to rent rooms from the unsuspecting Mrs Wilberforce, nobody believes they are planning a daring robbery. But when Mrs Wilberforce’s naivety gives way to righteous indignation, the gang’s best laid plans start to unravel! With his brilliant plot rumbled, the Professor decides there’s only one way to keep the old lady quiet. She must face the music, and

Ever thought about part-time, full-time or live-in work as a paid Care Giver in your area, helping older people stay in their own homes?

Home Instead is very different to other care agencies you may have heard of. Currently we are Worcestershire’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated home care agency and hold the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation in Care, as well as being rated the UK’s No 1 Quality Care Agency by Industry watchdog LaingBuisson. We don’t do the short calls others do and there is always time for our carers to give companionship to their clients as part of the call. Our Caregivers go back to the same clients time and again, getting to know them as friends. We don’t ask our Caregivers to wear uniform because when they take clients out and about it is much nicer to be seen with someone who could be a friend or relative. Charity

All About...

the percy picton fund Every year this locally-based charity gives financial help to people hoping to establish a career in horticulture. The Percy Picton Memorial Fund was set up in memory of the former president of the Wyche and Colwall Horticultural Society. Among those who have benefitted is Dominic Doran, who tells us more about his work.

How did your interest in horticulture and gardening begin?

It was in my great-grandmother’s house that my sister and I spent our early years. My mother was a keen gardener and would involve us in her work, pinching an antirrhinum flower to make it ‘talk’ or rubbing a fennel frond on our hands and releasing its fragrance. This was undoubtedly where my love of gardening stemmed from.

How did you hear about the Percy Picton Fund and how did it help you? I first heard of the Percy Picton Memorial Fund whilst attending a meeting of the Wyche and Colwall Horticultural Society. Upon discovering the nature of my profession, I was offered the opportunity to go and work with Fergus Garrett at Great Dixter. For those who may be less horticulturally savvy this is the equivalent of going to a cake sale and being invited to go work with Mary Berry in her kitchen! I took them up on this offer and found myself working alongside a living legend. In one week I learned more than I could have imagined and gained a valuable insight in to the workings of a garden functioning at the top of its game.

Tell us about your current job and how you got there? I am an Assistant Gardener for the National Trust at Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire. After being taken on a year’s contract, I was then fortunate enough to benefit from the Percy Picton Fund before a lucky turn of the wheel meant a permanent position came up and I was kept on. The job of a gardener is extremely varied. I can be arranging a pot display with a choice of plants from the nursery to best accentuate the colours and structures in the area it is displayed in one day and cleaning gutters the next.

26

Cutting the hedges is taken very seriously at Hidcote and maintaining the straight lines and sharp corners is imperative. What was initially a rather intimidating task has now become one of my favourite jobs in the garden. It feels like a craft, sculpting each hedge back into shape. Every hedge has its own character that you need to assess and work with to make it look sharp.

Do you have advice for any young people thinking about a career in horticulture?

If you have the time then volunteering is a really useful way to get an understanding of what is involved in horticulture. There are many places to seek training including the Historic and Botanic Garden Trainee Programme, a one or two-year course that fast tracks you through the basics of gardening – it has turned out some exceptional gardeners. And don’t forget the RHS level 1 and 2 Qualifications which can be taken locally at Pershore College.

THE PERCY PICTON MEMORIAL FUND

Qualification for a grant is open to people resident in the Malvern Hills area, followed by Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and the Stratford-upon-Avon district of Warwickshire. Grants can also be available to students following horticultural studies, apprentices and trainees in private and public gardens and nurseries. For further details of the Memorial Fund, including how to apply, please speak to David Hodgson on (01531) 640622 or email dhodgson363@btinternet.com

young snappers! The Rotary Club of Colwall in the Malvern Hills is delighted to announce the launch of this year’s Young Photographer Competition, the theme of which is the ‘Beauty of Nature’. The competition aims to encourage young people to experiment with photography, to use either digital or traditional methods of photography, to interprete their chosen topic and to express their ideas through the medium of photography. ‘This is the first time Colwall Rotary Club have participated in the competition locally’ according to Rotarian Jim Richardson, ‘but The Young Photographer Competition is a well-established and successful competition promoted by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI). We are looking forward to viewing the entries.’ The competition is open to all young people. There are three age categories; Junior (7 to 10 years old), Intermediate (11 to 13 years old) and Senior (14 to 17 years old). All entrants will receive a certificate and the local winners of each age group will then be entered into a District Competition and if successful again, into the National Finals. To enter you need to produce a portfolio of three photographs, in colour or black and white on photographic paper, based upon the theme, ‘Beauty of Nature’. Prints need to be submitted separately. Each print, including any mount, should be no larger than A4 size. Mobile phones can be used to take the photographs. In addition, each entrant should fill in an entry form and provide a brief sentence of what each photograph represents in relation to the theme.

Please Note: Photographs which include those of people under 18 years old must be accompanied by written permission from the parent, guardian, or carer of the person for those photographs to be submitted. Entries should be sent to Jim Richardson, The Rotary Club of Colwall in the Malvern Hills, ℅ the Colwall Park Hotel, Walwyn Rd, Malvern WR13 6QG by Friday 30th November 2018. For full details, including entry form, please visit www.colwallrotary.org.uk and click on the ‘In The Community’ tab. Daily wear and tear takes its toll on your feet. Foot pain can be debilitating, leading to difficulties with walking and exercise. Taking routine care of your feet can help avoid serious problems. An annual foot health check is as important as a sight or hearing test. Conditions such as diabetes or circulatory problems can be detected by examining the feet. Common problems include: bunions, clawing of the toes, heel pain and fungal infections. Over time we lose the fatty pads that cushion the bottom of our feet, skin becomes drier and we get pressure lesions such as hard skin and corns. Nails can become thickened and more difficult to manage. Uncomfortable feet are not something to ‘put up with’, much can be done to improve comfort, relieve pain and maintain mobility. At the Malvern Foot Clinic we can assist you with every aspect of your foot health care. With a Podiatrist and a Podiatric Surgeon on the team we can provide everything from nail cutting to bunion surgery. Book today for a foot health check or treatment and let us help you achieve happier feet! www.malvernfootclinic.co.uk 20/10/2016 16:06

Well Being

WELLBEING IN AUTUMN Worcester has disappeared into the mist that is sitting in the Severn Valley. The garden is damp from a wave of rain that passed over the hills. Soon, the sun will dip under the horizon and the dark night will come. I’m writing this in early September, and it’s not quite evening. The days have been getting noticeably shorter recently, and I am reminded of winter days in my youth when I would walk to work in the dark, walk home in the dark and spend the day longing for natural light rather than the fluorescent glow of the department store I was working in. As summer draws to a close I also find myself remembering those first days of sunshine this year, after the long snowy winter. The sprits of the whole town seemed to lift when the bright weather arrived. What can we do to stay happy as the hours of light become less, the temperature cools, and the clouds roll in? Hygge Lots of you will have heard of Hygge. Pronounced Hue-guh, this is a Danish word that means something like cosiness. When interviewed by the BBC, Susanne Nilson said, “Hygge could be families and friends getting together for a meal, with the lighting dimmed, or it could be time spent on your own reading a good book.” Maybe we can think of Hygge as creating conditions that help us to relax: Lighting candles, or sitting around a fire (inside or outside), creating a winter evening playlist that slowly gets more and more chilled, or sharing a good meal with friends. Getting outside As Arthur Wainwright famously said, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Getting outside means getting vitamin D. It means moving the body, and it means you’re more likely to look at trees. All of these things are really good for you. In cold damp weather I often feel reluctant to go up onto the hills, but every time I do I feel better afterwards. Eating well This summer I’ve been enjoying lots of wonderful salads and Buddha bowls for lunch. Our veg patch needed plenty of watering but the results

32

By Kaspa Thompson were amazing, and it’s been great to go outside, pick something and have it on my plate minutes later. Now the earth is turning, different things are coming into season, and I’ll be enjoying homemade soups with squash, leeks and other winter goodies. Sometimes – particularly when I’m on my own – cooking can seem like a chore. But when I eat good food I always feel better. Community of Christmas Concert Maybe itMagic feels easier to meet people when the weather is good, and easier to stay at home on your own on cold dark nights. But we are social beings. We each like different amounts of company, but some company is good for the soul, so host a dinner party, meet a friend for a coffee, or join a book club. Plan something you enjoy If the thought of a long dark winter really does lower your mood then make sure you plan some bright spots. Make a date with yourself, or a friend, and put it in your diary. Having something to look forward to in the future can make you feel better right now. As the weather changes, and the light changes, it can be easy to fall into wishing for the autumn and winter to already be over. All of the suggestions I’ve made today are based on accepting the reality of what is, and finding ways of appreciating and making the most of what is happening right now. Whether you are a cold weather person or a hot weather person, I hope you have an easy and enjoyable autumn.

Recipe

Autumn soup The ingredients are cooked in a tray in the oven. Butternut squash is easy to slice, but this works well with pumpkin later in the season. 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Gas 6. 2. Roast the chunks of squash in the oil in the hot oven for 20 minutes. Add the onion, ginger and garlic to the roasting pan and roast for 15 minutes more. 3. Place the roasted mixture into a blender and add ½ litre vegetable stock. 4. Blend; add more water for a thinner soup. Season to taste. 5. Reheat to serve.

Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes

Ingredients 1 white onion finely chopped 1 garlic clove crushed medium butternut squash cut into chunks 3cm piece of ginger crushed 1 tsp bouillon powder ½ litre water 4 tbsp rapeseed oil

Tip: Adding the fresh ginger gives a warming effect and is good for the digestion too.

All About...

the beacon race The Worcestershire Beacon Race is a tough 7-mile race to the top of the Worcestershire Beacon. Now in its seventh decade, it takes place this year on Saturday 13th October. John Brook has been involved in the race for more than 30 years and tells us more.

How old is race? It began in 1953 and although the route has changed a few times to avoid traffic, it has always started in Great Malvern before heading up the Beacon, around North Hill and back into the town. Worcester Athletic Club has always organised the race and at one time it took place in March; switching it to October means the weather conditions are generally more favourable. I became involved when my company at the time (Brookhire) began sponsoring it. The race was classed as a low-grade fell run until the Beacon was given a permanent surface and these days its described as an all-terrain race.

What are hardest parts? There are a couple of particularly challenging sections. After starting in Rosebank Gardens the course follows a circuitous route to St Ann’s Well. The next part from the Wyche Road to the Goldmine and onto the Beacon is probably the hardest section. However, for some runners, the most difficult part is later, after the descent to West Malvern when there’s a second climb around North Hill. I’ve run the race for the past 35 years without a break. Originally I would have run it in about an hour and I am somewhat slower these days. It certainly doesn’t get any easier!

Who enters? It’s recognised as one of the hardest races around and because of that, we attract some very talented runners. Usually the fastest runners complete the course in around 46 minutes but the course record was set in 2001 by A. Gardner from Stroud Athletic Club, who completed it in 41 minutes and 35 seconds. It’s incredible to watch the fast runners who are more like mountain goats than humans!

36

Currently around 250 to 300 runners take part, from casual to extremely competent, but it’s definitely not a fun-run and a good level of fitness is required. Entrants come from as far away as London, Birmingham and Bristol and there’s always a good contingent of local runners. Local clubs like Malvern joggers are great supporters of the race and the participants are always very positive about it. If you have nice weather, the views are unrivalled and we always have excellent hospitality afterwards. Of course the race only happens thanks to the hard work of David Waldron and Andrew Peach from Worcester Athletic Club plus a host of marshalls. To read more about the race, including entry, visit www.worcester-ac.co.uk

Financial advice

ODE TO AUTUMN By Andrew Tannatt Nash

As Autumn once again approaches, the efficient gardener invests a little extra time gathering the remaining crops, raking the leaves, collecting the seeds and planting the spring bulbs to reap the benefits of the future new year. It is also the time of year when investing a little extra time on your financial affairs will reap benefits before the next fiscal year arrives. Here are some ideas of things you could be preparing for: 1. Collating the information for your SelfAssessment tax return 2017/2018. The deadline for a paper copy submission of your tax return is the 31st October 2018 and for online submission it is the 31st January 2019. If you submit an online return by the 30th December HMRC will automatically collect the tax you owe from your wage or pension, if you are eligible. What sort of things do I need to collate: a) Information from your P60/P45 received from your pension provider or employer; b) Any dividend slips that you have received since April; c) Any bank/building society interest that you have received this year; d) If you are a landlord, your taxable rental profits; e) Any capital disposals that you have made such as property or shares; f) Income from self-employment. 2. If you are VAT registered, prepare for Making Tax Digital (MTD). HMRC has created new rules relating to the submission of VAT returns which come into force in April 2019. You may have to change your accounting software to comply with the new rules. Seek professional advice now! 3. If you are operating as a business and are not VAT registered, continue to monitor your 12 month rolling turnover to ensure that you do not expect to breach the VAT threshold, which is currently £85,000. 4. Consider your ability to invest in pensions and Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) as a tax efficient way to manage your money. By taking these small proactive steps now, ‘before the gathering swallows twitter in the skies’, will ensure a smooth transition from one financial year to the next. Gardening

green fingers

Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is reflecting on the long hot summer. Autumn is here we are enjoying the colourful finale to a very challenging growing year. It has been interesting to hear that many of my customers lost more plants in the dry summer than in the cold of winter. We grow such a large selection of plants in our gardens which originate from all over the world. This means that they often come from different climates and grow in a variety of soil types. Consequentially, we cannot always succeed in keeping them in extreme weather conditions. The group of plants I have found the most versatile are the alpine plants. This includes plants from high up in the mountain scree to the plants in the alpine meadows and woodlands. Most of these plants will tolerate poor soils and extreme temperatures. Some of these include Gentians, Saxifraga, Anemone, Armeria, Erysimum, Achillea, Thyme and Phlox from higher levels, down to the meadow and woodland plants such as Iris, Trollius, Potentilla, Polygonatum, Primula, Solidago, Geraniums, including small shrubs such as Azalea, Rhododendron, Hypericum. Many of our cultivated garden plants originate from plants that grow in the mountainous areas of Europe. These plants will withstand extreme cold and intense light levels and given a free draining soil they battle most extreme conditions. If you want to keep your plants through the harsh extremes of climate change then plants from the northern hemisphere are the best options. Potentially that could be very boring as none of us can ignore that endless array of delights from South Africa! Here are some jobs that need doing in October and November. Kitchen garden: Clear and prepare vegetable beds. Remove all plant debris to avoid spreading diseases. Add well-rotted manure.

42

Plant autumn garlic and onions. Complete lifting potatoes before they get frost damage. Order bareroot fruit trees and bushes. Apply barrier glue or grease bands to prevent winter moth damage on fruit trees. Cut back summer fruiting raspberry canes. Ornamental garden: Prune and shape roses to reduce damage from winter winds. Cut back and divide perennials. Collect ripe seed from plants such as Verbena bonariensis to keep in a dry place ready for sowing in spring. Plant up pots with spring bulbs and winter bedding. Plant bulbs in borders and to naturalise. Mulch borders to trap in the warmth of the soil. Move any shrubs, water well before and prune evergreens to help reduce water loss. Wildlife: Leave any berries or seeds on borders and hedges for the birds. Keep a corner of the garden ’untidy’ for hibernating mammals. Allow some ivy to mature and flower, it is a great source of nectar and berries. Check bonfires for hedgehogs before lighting. This summer has been challenging and exhausting trying to keep plants alive, but what fabulous weather we had for being outside and enjoying the garden.

Theatre News

still alice

Michael Park is delighted to announce that following a hugely successful three-week run at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year, Christine Mary Dunford’s newly adapted version of Lisa Genova’s best-selling novel, STILL ALICE, comes to Malvern Theatres this November, directed by David Grindley and starring Sharon Small as Alice. STILL ALICE follows 50 year-old Alice Howland, a renowned linguistics professor at Harvard University, as she battles with early-onset dementia and explores the effects the disease has on identity, family and relationships in this uncompromising yet tender portrayal. In 2014, Genova’s novel was adapted into a film starring Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin, for which Moore won the Academy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards for Best Actress. Television and stage star, Sharon Small, reprises the role of Alice, her first UK tour in almost twenty-five years, having played it at West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year. She is best known for playing Barbara Havers in The Inspector Linley Mysteries (BBC One), Trudi Malloy in Mistresses (BBC One), Christine opposite Hugh Grant, Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette in the film adaptation of About A Boy, and most recently as Brigitte Rayne in Trust Me opposite Jodie Whittaker (BBC One). Her vast array of stage work includes Simon Stephens’s adaptation of The Threepenny Opera at the National Theatre, and When Harry Met Sally at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Still Alice will be at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 20th to Saturday 24th November. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
