Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

I’m sometimes amazed by how many good things go on in Worcester, in fact there’s not room in this month’s magazine to fit everything in! I haven’t counted the exact number, but there must be hundreds of different events happening in The Worcester Festival. Lots of it is free, and it takes place in and around the City Centre, culminating in a free Fireworks Display on 26th August. The details are on Page 22. As if that wasn’t enough, The Worcester Music Festival at the end of August sees dozens of bands playing every imaginable kind of music in free gigs across the city, see Page 12.

I hope you enjoy reading this second edition, let us know what you think.

giving new life to old kitchens A new business has opened in Worcester that can refurbish your kitchen while dramatically cutting the cost. Dream Doors swap your old kitchen doors, drawers and worktops with made-to-measure replacements. With an extensive range of styles to choose from, the work can be completed in one or two days and is much cheaper than replacing everything. The business on The Tything is run by Mark Battin and his wife Dionne who believe passionately in what they’re offering. ‘Working in this way, you can save thousands of pounds, compared with having to replace everything in your kitchen’ says Mark. Founded in the late 1990s, Dream Doors is a national network of more than forty locally-owned franchised showrooms. ‘Although we bring the advantages of a large and experienced company, we use local suppliers and our own in-house fitters’ continues Mark. ‘I have worked locally supplying and fitting kitchens for many years. All our installations, whether its replacing kitchen to a kitchen facelift and beyond, are carried out by local, quality craftsmen, chosen and approved by me.’ While they employ their own fitting teams to handle the installations, Mark and Dionne meet customers in their showroom, or visit them at home to help them plan their kitchen refurbishment. With hundreds of door combinations to choose from, as well as worktops, sinks and state-of-the-art appliances, Dionne is confident there isn’t a home in the area that wouldn’t benefit from a makeover of some sort. ‘We can swap the doors or the worktops in a day, or both in two. We can add new units, or sinks and taps, and we supply everything from coffee machines to carousels that give easy

6

access to corner cupboards. The possibilities are endless, we even sell bespoke bedroom doors!’ Dream Doors managing director, Troy Tappenden, who sold the company’s first kitchen makeover more than 14 years ago, rates the Battin’s showroom above any other, including his own. ‘I might have to overhaul my own showroom now, as this one is absolutely stunning,’ he says. ‘Every time I see a new Dream Doors showroom open it is better than the last, but the attention to detail and the efforts Dionne and Mark have put in are astounding. They will do incredibly well in this area. Kitchens in Worcester will never be the same again!’ ‘Anyone interested in a new kitchen, but who doesn’t want to spend ridiculous sums and live on a building site for weeks on end, should pop into the showroom or contact us today,’ adds Mark. ‘We offer a friendly and relaxed approach to business and won’t give you the ‘hard sell’. At our first meeting we’ll show you a range of sample kitchen doors, as well as handles, worktops and accessories to complement your kitchen makeover. Even if you want to start from scratch with a total kitchen refurbishment, we can supply and fit everything from top-brand appliances to granite worktops.’ ‘We will give you an accurate, but no obligation quote there and then’ continues Mark. ‘If your interest is in more than simply replacing kitchen doors, we can return with a computer designed plan to make it easier for you to visualise your new kitchen.’ Dionne or Mark can be reached on 01905 887548, visit www.dreamdoors.co.uk or call into the showroom at 42 The Tything.

St John’s Garage A new place for your car’s MOT There’s a new place on the west side of Worcester where you can get your car’s MOT completed, as St John’s Garage on Bransford Road has just installed a brand new MOT testing bay. ‘We’re a popular local garage’ says Matt Jeffreys who runs the business, ‘and we’re growing in leaps and bounds. We like to treat people well, our first priority is to treat our customers well, we are straight dealers who make sure there are no unexpected or hidden charges in the work we carry out.’ Matt started out in the motor trade more than fifteen years ago as an apprentice, and subsequently worked at different garages in Worcester before setting up his business in 2010. In the busy workshop there are five mechanics at work. ‘We’ll look after you every step of the way’ says Matt, ‘we do everything from servicing, simple repairs through to the maintenance of air conditioning, diagnostic work and more complex repairs. Our qualified technicians specialise in

servicing and diagnositcs on any make or model of car.’ Part of the garage’s philosophy is to offer customers the best value for money they can, and only replace parts that genuinely need replacing. ‘When a new customer comes to us’ says Matt, ‘we offer to look over their vehicle and make an honest assessment of the vehicle’s condition. This is not an opportunity for us to replace parts all at once, instead we give an estimate of when worn components might eventually need replacing, for example in 2,000 miles or another year.’ ‘We’re busy with lots of returning customers’ continues Matt. ‘The best thing for me are customers who are happy to recommend us to others. We pride ourselves on offering high quality work and a first class service.’ St John’s Garage is situated on Bransford Road, at the junction with Blakefield Road, as you drive away from St John’s.

Have you written your Will?

Writing your Will is something many people put off as just another chore that can be delayed until another day. St Richard’s Hospice explains there are lots of very good reasons to make your Will, and the sooner it’s done the sooner you can feel happier that your assets will be distributed according to your wishes. • If you die without a Will, there are certain rules which dictate how the money, property or possessions should be allocated. This may not be the way that you would have wished your money and possessions to be distributed • Unmarried partners and partners who have not registered a civil partnership cannot inherit from each other unless there is a Will, so the death of one partner may create serious financial problems for the remaining partner

To take part – simply call your preferred solicitor and make an appointment quoting the “St Richard’s Hospice September Write a Will Scheme”. For any queries about the scheme please contact Rachel Jones, Corporate Partnerships and Events Fundraiser, St Richard’s Hospice on 01905 763963 ext 2031 or rjones@strichards.org.uk

• If you have children, you will need to make a Will so that arrangements for the children can be made if either one or both parents die • It may be possible to reduce the amount of tax payable on the inheritance if advice is taken in advance and a Will is made • If your circumstances have changed, it is important that you make a Will to ensure that your money and possessions are distributed according to your wishes. For example, if you have separated and your ex-partner now lives with someone else, you may want to change your Will. If you are married or enter into a registered civil partnership, this will make any previous Will you have made invalid. A gift in your Will, however large or small, whenever the time is right for you, will help St Richard’s to continue to care. After your family and friends have been remembered, it gives you the opportunity to leave a gift to St Richard’s Hospice. This gift can have an impact on people’s lives for years to come. £1 in every Will makes a difference. www.strichards.org.uk/giftsinwills

Make a simple* Will during September for only £85 or £135 for a double. For any queries please contact Rachel Jones, St Richard’s Hospice on 01905 763963 ext 2031 or rjones@strichards.org.uk www.strichards.org.uk/writeawill *A simple Will assumes no detailed advice on inheritance tax is required and instructions are taken at the office. The solicitors’ decision is final in this respect.

All About...

Worcester Music Festival There are hundreds of musicians, dozens of gigs and lots of free entertainment at this year’s Worcester Music Festival. Its run by a dedicated group of volunteers and the Festival’s press officer Melanie Hall tells us more. Are you happy with the success?

So when did it start? This will be the sixth time the Festival has taken place and it grows bigger every year! It was started in 2008 by a local music promoter called Chris Bennion who wanted to create a platform for local bands and artists to showcase their music. Many more people worked hard to get the first Festival to happen and it created such a great buzz, we knew that something special had been created.

What kinds of music can we hear? We have something for most tastes, including rock, indie-pop, street blues, folk and African jazz as well as punk, metal and electro-glam. A hip hop group called Rachel by the Stream are coming all the way from Australia to play at our festival. But lots of acts are local, including Gareth Forsyth an acoustic guitarist from Malvern and the Worcester Ukulele Club will be hosting a beginner’s workshop. We use more than two dozen venues across the city, from established performance spaces, pubs, bars and cafes as well as taking some music out onto the streets and even the Pump House Environment Centre. As well as hearing original music in many different settings, the added beauty is that everything is absolutely free with no tickets required.

What makes this festival different?

We are unusual because everything we put on is free. We also offer music-related workshops for musicians and the public whatever their age or ability. Of course the main thing is all the talented musicians plus our volunteers putting their heart and soul into creating a great weekend, there’s always a good atmosphere and we’re starting to build a really good reputation.

12

As a sign of our success, venues now approach us to be part of the Festival, and many more bands apply to perform than we can accommodate. We hope that as we grow we might be able to attract more funding and more people to run events, so in the future we might have an outdoor stage. As well as highlighting what a wonderful city Worcester is, we hope to gain more national recognition over the coming years and encourage audience members to come from far and wide. Hopefully we can also attract more industry professionals for talent scouting which could further the careers of some of our artists.

How many people do you expect to attend? Last year we estimate that around 11,000 people attended all the different events, our workshops alone saw 800 people turn up! We live in an age of talent shows on television; this is an opportunity to see a band play live that in a couple of years might be famous. We also raise money for local charities and this year we’ll be fund raising for Sight Concern Worcestershire and Worcester Deaf Children’s Society. As an added bonus, we’ve also produced a Naked Band Calendar, featuring local musicians, which should raise even more money!

Worcester Music Festival takes place between 30th August and 1st September. For an updated list of who is playing, please visit www.wumufest.co.uk. You can also stay up-to-date by joining the festival on Facebook and following the festival on Twitter @worcsmusicfest

Community focus

Stars in the Sky Worcestershire Stars in the Sky Worcestershire is a project that helps people with learning disabilities find friendship and romance. Its run by Our Way Advocacy, and development worker Rachel Fernihough and tells us more about what they do locally.

group focus

We’ve been organising our social events for the past four years and people find us in many different ways. A huge amount of people come through word of mouth, we’ve currently got 150 members and we have people joining all the time. Our members have all levels of disability from those with a full time job to people who have complex needs. Last year we matched two people who starred on Channel 4’s ‘The Undateables’. Kate and Simon’s story appearing on national tv definitely raised our profile and we’ve had many people join since then. The friendship aspect of what we do is lovely, a lot of people with learning disabilities are socially isolated and their confidence and social skills improve as a result. We do meet people who spend a huge amount of time alone in their bedrooms because their social network is very limited. Living your life in that way can really get you down, some people look for friendship and romance online but using the internet can be fraught with difficulty. We operate regular events, with at least two social gatherings across Worcestershire every month. We’re running an internet safety workshop for our members in Worcester on 12th August, and at the end of the month we’re travelling to Hanbury to try some outdoor activities. We recently held our summer ball, an annual event which is the highlight of our year. It was a black tie and ballgown event with live music and we had a fantastic time. In the future we hope to expand our work further, but that depends on securing funding to make

14

this happen. With our member numbers growing we’ve already proved there’s an overhwhelming need for what we do, people even get in touch with us from beyond Worcestershire as there’s nothing similar where they live. We’ve been running sexual health and relationship workshops with partners in the statutory sector, since these are subjects our members often need help with. When one young man joined us, his mother came to me with tears in her eyes to thank us. She said she could help him with sorting out somewhere to live and managing his finances, but the one thing she couldn’t do was help him with finding friends. He met someone through our group and she said it had made his life so much better in every way imaginable. People with learning disabilities face all kinds of barriers, not least when building a social life, which makes our work all the more important. You can read more about Stars in the Sky Worcestershire at www.ourway.org.uk

To join you have to: have a disability, live in Worcestershire, be 18 or over. We enjoy discos, meals out, theatre trips, karaoke & speed dating events. Membership costs £30 a year and includes invitations to all Stars in the Sky (Worcestershire) events as well as workshops and a regular newsletter. For information and an application form please call 01562 820262.

Recipe

Ceasar Salad Kindly provided by Richard Potter, Red Hen Cookery Chef Caesar salad is a great summer classic. Perfect for a light summer lunch or topping with BBQ’d chicken for an easy al fresco dinner. Quick and easy to make, homemade croutons and the mayonnaise will take your Caesar to the next level. Mayonnaise recipe*

• Place onto a tray and bake in the preheated oven for around 10-15 minutes until the croutons are crisped up but not burnt and dry. Remove from the oven.

• 1 egg yolk • 1 teaspoon mustard- Dijon or wholegrain • 200ml neutral flavoured oil such as light olive oil or groundnut • White-wine vinegar • Lemon juice 1. In a bowl combine the egg yolk and mustard and blend thoroughly.

• While still hot, place the croutons back into the bowl and grate over some parmesan and toss to coat the croutons, place back into the oven for 5 minutes to finish of cooking.

2. Slowly start adding the oil drop by drop while making sure to thoroughly whisk every drop of oil into the egg mustard mix.

• 2 Cos or Romaine lettuce, torn, washed & dried • 12 anchovy fillets, • Handful of homemade croutons • Parmesan shavings • Sea salt and black pepper

3. Continue until around 50-70ml of the oil has been whisked into the mix and the mayonnaise has started to thicken, be patient! Do not rush this stage as the mayo may split if you add the oil in too quickly. 4. Once it has started to thicken you can start to add the oil in larger amounts, whisking thoroughly between each addition. 5. When all the oil has been added add lemon juice or white wine vinegar to taste and little salt if desired. That is your mayonnaise made and can be kept in the fridge for two days. To make croutons you really need some bread with a bit of body, something along the lines of sourdough or ciabatta, not you normal sliced white loaf! • Preheat your oven to 180c • Take the stale sourdough or ciabatta bread and tear into roughly equally sized pieces and place in to a bowl. If you have a bottle open splash a few drops of white wine over the bread and allow it to soak the wine up, you’re not looking for the bread to disintegrate but just soak up some extra flavour!

18

• Then drizzle with a little oil and season with sea salt and toss together until well coated.

• Remove from the oven and allow to cool before building your salad.

Putting together your Caesar salad Ingredients - serves 2

For the Dressing • 100g homemade mayonnaise • 2 anchovy fillets • 1 tbsp Finely grated Parmesan • Worcestershire sauce • 1 crushed clove of garlic • Black pepper • 1 tbsp. Finally chopped parsley For the dressing, mash the anchovy fillets in a bowl with a fork, add the mayonnaise, crushed garlic, parsley and the parmesan, mix until well combined. Add a dash of Worcester sauce, a twist of black pepper and taste, add more parmesan and Worcestershire sauce if needed. In a large bowl lightly and carefully toss the leaves with half of the dressing and half of the croutons. Add more dressing if wished, pile the leaves into a serving bowl and sprinkle over the remaining croutons, the anchovies and shavings of parmesan and serve.

* Because eggs can contain salmonella, it is important to ensure that you use pasteurised egg in dishes in which eggs will be uncooked or only lightly cooked. Pasteurised egg can be bought in liquid or powder form. If in any doubt use commercially produced mayonnaise.

And how a city like Worcester, with all the opportunities to do great things for our health like parks and gyms, also provides all the temptation to trip us up in our efforts for better health, if we let it. A lot of it is pure habit. I always buy a bag of sweets if I’m going on a train journey, but I’d never eat sweets if I were just walking down the street. Luckily I don’t go on the train all that often! Certain habits are triggered by other people. We might go into town with a friend and end up having an enormous milk and sugar laden coffee because that’s just what we do when we’re together. Or have a bottle of wine when a particular person comes over for dinner. When we go out for a meal, we often seem incapable of eating any less than a small mountain of food. At home, do I eat three courses, in quick succession, with added alcohol? Nope! None of this is a problem, of course. One of the pleasures of living in a city like ours is the fact that we can head out of the door and within a few minutes be in the vicinity of an amazing restaurant, in a coffee shop or on a train. Or having a picnic, going to the cinema or any other pastime that involves food through habit, rather than hunger.

• It is visual? Are you eating chips because you saw them languishing uneaten on your kid’s plate? Are you ordering pizza because the one delivered to the next table looked so good? That’s the first step and it’s super necessary to give you the insight you need to change things. Without shining that light inwards to see what’s happening, you won’t know where you need to focus. But once you can clearly see what’s going on, you can start the process of switching it! By the way, the reason why this stuff is hard is because habits are powerful things and we are often completely unaware that we are at their mercy. It’s not because you are weak or lacking in willpower. Figure out your habit triggers and you’ll be on your way to being one step ahead of those dastardly habits that hold you back.

There are five main things that can trigger a habit. Have a word with yourself and try to ascertain which one of these it is: • Is it a social thing? Are you drinking wine because of who you’re with? • Is it emotional? Has the way you’re feeling got you in a cheesecake frame of mind? • Is it a time thing? Have you got an attack of the 8pm munchies? • Is it environment thing? Are you eating because of where you are, on a train or at work?

Saturday 10 August - Monday 26 August In all, there are hundreds of events taking place in the Worcester Festival between 10th and 26th August. As well as entertainment there are participatory events and everything from beekeeping to brassbands. Its a real mix celebrating life in Worcester. This year the Cathedral is offering lots of attractions, including a stone masonary course and tours, an introduction to bell ringing and a chance to glimpse behind the scenes in the medieval library and other parts of the building that aren’t normally open to the public. Local museums and community groups are also heavily involved. There are guided walks, craft workshops and street entertainment around the city and many of the events are free. The first festival took place in 2002 and was started by Chris Jaeger, the Chief Executive of Worcester Live, which runs Huntingdon Hall and the Swan Theatre. This year Chris is taking more of a backseat, and the Festival is now in the hands of Ben Humphrey as Artistic Director, who is known to many people for his active role in the local Arts scene.

You can read more at www.worcesterfestival.co.uk and events can be booked by calling the box office on (01905) 611427. A festival brochure can be picked up for free from Huntingdon Hall.

The Riverside Artists’ Market The Riverside Artists’ Market is one of Worcester’s most popular summertime events and it happens this year on three consecutive Sundays in August. Its a chance to wonder along South Quay overlooking the river and enjoy browsing among the many different stalls which exhibit and sell all kinds of arts and crafts. ‘The market’s taken place for the last eight years and is always popular’ says Roy McDonald, Chair of the Worcester Tourist Association. ‘Its an opportunity for local people as well as visitors to the city to enjoy our beautiful riverside. If the weather’s good its a lovely day out.’ ‘As well as browsing, you can have a chat with the artists and buy something as well’ continues Roy. ‘Many of those exhibiting are local to Worcestershire, as well as paintings there is knitting, cards, photography and much more.’ In previous years the event has been organised by the Tourism Association but the team behind Worcester Business Improvement District (BID) has now come on board to help it grow further. ‘They will give it a wider audience’ says Roy, ‘and over next few years we hope it will develop it into larger market. The River Severn is a great asset to the city and its great to be holding events along the river.’ The Riverside Artists’ Market takes place between 11am and 5pm on South Quay on 11th, 18th and 25th August.

music feature

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly show on Choice Radio highlighting local musical acts. This month I’d like to tell you about Claire Boswell who is an up and coming singer and songwriter from Worcester, who is about to release her first album.

Claire’s always loved music and some of her earliest memories are of singing to entertain her family. She got got more serious about her music when her dad was given a guitar by a friend. At the age of 13 she began to teach herself to play guitar and quickly discovered a passion for making her own music. She was encouraged at school and when she enrolled at Worcester Tech, she began to appear at open mic sessions around the city, giving her the confidence to stand up and perform in front of an audience. She has gained a reputation as a really good performer and has appeared at some big events including West Fest in West Malvern, the O2 Academy and at Nozstock, the Festival near Bromyard. Even so, she’s a Worcester girl through and through, and her performance at the Huntingdon Hall holds a special place in her heart. As a child she went to the venue to hear Stan Webb’s Chickenshack, a band who have been on the British blues scene in various forms for more than four decades. Then, a few years later, she found herself playing there as a support act for them! Her musical style is broadly folk-rock, but with many different influences from country artists to people like Joni Mitchell. One of her favourite singers is Linda Ronstadt and she admits there’s

very little in the current charts that she really appreciates. For much of this year she’s been busy recording material for her first album. Its been a long time coming, partly because, in her own words, she’s a bit of a perfectionist and wants it to sound just right! Dave Draper, a local producer is working closely with her on it and with luck it should be ready for release by the end of the year. Claire will play various gigs in and around Worcester in the coming months. She is playing at the St Swithun’s Institute on Friday 30th August, the gig is part of the Worcester Music Festival and its free, so it could be the perfect opportunity to hear her music. Also, look out for her younger brother Charlie Boswell, yet another talent from the same family! You can hear Dave’s full interview with Claire Boswell on Choice Radio at choiceradio.org.uk and clicking on Live! In the Past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.

Careers Advice at Pitman Training There's an opportunity for some free careers advice at two Open Days at Pitman Training Worcester at the start of September. As well as a CV clinic, you can chat with staff as well as students of the centre and find out more about the variety of courses they offer. 'One of our major advantages is being able to fit training in around our clients' says Jazz Chateau, Director of the centre on New Street, in the heart of the city. 'You can start your course at a moment that suits you, and in many cases come in for training at times that fit in around your life. As well as being open throughout the week, there are two evening sessions in the week and we are open on Saturdays.'

Jazz's background in both business and as a senior lecturer means she is well placed to give advice and encouragement. 'One young woman we helped had left a university course, because she felt it wasn't right for her' says Jazz. 'With our encouragement she enrolled on our Executive PA Diploma which led to her first job. Others want to develop their existing career further, or are planning a return to the job market after a break for children.' 'We're not as expensive as you might think' continues Jazz, 'and we have a number of flexible payment packages. People are often pleasantly surprised when they find out the prices of courses.'

The Training Centre offers more than 250 different courses, covering everything from improving IT proficiency, to management and secretarial skills. Pitman is now working with the Association of Accounting Technicians, giving accounting and finance skills, from short courses to higher level qualifications.

The Open Days at Pitman Training Worcester are on Thursday 5th September from 10am to 8pm, and Saturday 7th September from 9.30am to 5pm. Enjoy a discount on the cost of a course if you come to one of the Open Days at 24 New Street in Worcester.
