Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Countryside on the doorstep Roots at Rushwick is a Farm Shop on the West side of Worcester with a mission to provide local food for local people. The business is the result of more than a decade of hard work by a young farming couple, helped by a man who knows how to make the perfect loaf.

There are only five ingredients for perfect bread and they are Flour, Salt, Yeast, Water and Time!

For Tony the baker, creating the perfect loaf is an art and a passion. With the warm aroma of baking bread around us, Tony is busy folding dough into trays, ready to go into the oven. ‘There are only five ingredients for perfect bread’ he says, ‘Flour, Salt, Yeast, Water and Time!’ Although they’ve been selling bread for some time, the bakery is new, and Tony is in charge of the baking. Immense care and thought goes into his work. The mix was created the day before and left overnight. Its been folded, proved and tended to before its finally ready for the oven. ‘The care we put into each loaf, and the fact there are no additives, results in a far better flavour’ he says. ‘By following the proper process for creating bread, the gluten gets broken down as well. The resulting bread is more filling, its healthy and its tasty.’ As Tony continues his work, Meg Edmonds shows me around the farm shop. ‘When we arrived thirteen years ago, there wasn’t a lot here’ she tells me, ‘just a few sacks of spuds and a bit of veg!’. Together with her husband Will, the transformation is now complete. They have worked day and night to create a place that creates and sells delicious local food. There are tomatoes grown just up the road, asparagus from Evesham and cheese from a Worcestershire dairy herd. Soon the produce grown on their farm will come into season and be sold here as well. ‘Everything we grow here

6

Business feature create a soup with fresh, local vegetables. There are many ways to make our food go further, and part of what we do here is to show people how.’ The crops on the Roots farm are raised from seed, and planted out as soon as the weather allows. ‘The first greens will be sold in the shop any day now, and we already have some tomatoes from a local grower who uses traditional glass houses to grow them at Little Witley. They smell like I remembers tomatoes smelling when I was a child! Its the same with the cucumbers, they still have the flowers on the end and have been freshly picked. The taste is something else.’ is organic’ says Meg, ‘including salads, herbs and other crops, all in the fields around the farm shop. We also sell food from around forty local suppliers, including fresh produce, cheese, jam, eggs, and so on. One of our local cheese makers creates the most delicious soft cheeses. He keeps his own small dairy herd, and spent a lot of time learning the art of cheese making from French farmers. We continued to pester him until he was able to make enough to sell here!’ In the kitchen, Tony is taking Focaccia bread out of the oven, dotted with olives and herbs. ‘Focaccia was originally made on the hearth in Roman households’ says Tony. The tins in which its baked are greased with olive oil, which helps to roast the bottom of the loaf, making it even more delicious.’ Tony bakes bread from Thursday until Saturday at Roots, and many shoppers time their trips to coincide with his baking days, so they can buy his freshly baked bread. Another part of the Roots Farm Shop are the popular events and courses they run. ‘Our next step will be to hold bread making courses’ says Meg. ‘I find it frustrating when people say to me they can’t bake. Its much easier than most people realise, the ingredients are simple and its hard to go wrong.’ Outside, as the pigs root around in the sunshine, skylarks can be heard across the fields. ‘We raise our own beef cattle here on the farm, we have a small flock of sheep for lamb and now pigs and chickens as well. Many people have forgotten that even meat is seasonal, for example our lamb is available from June until Christmas. For some people, eating properly-raised meat is important, they want to invest in the meat they eat and make it go further. After eating a chicken you can make stock from the carcass, and use that to

‘For us its about building a community locally’ continues Meg. ‘We employ local people and put something back, supporting other local services and small-scale businesses. For example, this Hollandaise Source is produced locally from local eggs. These jams and chutneys are made by a woman called Gemma in Worcester. Having said that, we’re not against world food, after all so much of it is inspiring, and we are part of that bigger picture. I think our job is to persuade people to think about what they eat, and eat well.’ Many of the regular customers began coming after dropping in for a casual look around the shop. ‘Many others find us by word of mouth’ says Meg, ‘perhaps they’ve eaten a roast chicken at a friend’s house and asked where its come from, or they’ve been given one of our lemon drizzle cakes as a present. Its a cross section of people, but they are all people who value what they eat and appreciate good food. Here they can buy fresh food, choose from a great variety of produce and stay on the pulse of the season.’

Roots at Rushwick is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and Sundays from 10am until 1pm. The Farm Shop is situated on the Bransford Road which runs through the village of Rushwick. (WR2 5TD)

Recipe

Roots at Rushwick now sells fresh real bread. You can find them on Bransford Road, Rushwick nr Worcester or contact them: 01905 421104

Basic Real Bread Roots at Rushwick supports the Real Bread Campaign, a group promoting better quality bread in Britain. They believe that bread should be made without the use of any artificial additives, and share ways to make bread better for us, better for communities and better for the planet. The Campaign’s membership scheme welcomes everyone who cares about the state of bread in Britain, you can find out more at www.realbreadcampaign.org The following recipe for Basic Real Bread is courtesy of the Real Bread Campaign.

Equipment Large mixing bowl, electronic scales (or scales & measuring spoons) and measuring jug, baking tray or large loaf tin, a clean, damp tea towel or an old but clean plastic bag (e.g. a carrier bag), a wire cooling/cake rack, oven gloves.

Ingredients • 500g stoneground bread (strong) flour – white, wholemeal or a combination • 340g hand warm (about 25°C) water – this is about right for a mixed loaf. If you are making a 100% white loaf, reduce the water by about 20g. If you are making a 100% wholemeal loaf, add an extra 20g of water • 10g fresh yeast or 5g dried active yeast (not the stuff that says instant, easy bake) • 5g salt • A little (about 1tsp) oil, butter etc. for the baking tray Before you start, wash your hands. 1.Dissolve the salt in the water in the measuring jug (if using dried active yeast, dissolve this in the water first and then add the salt). 2.Put the flour into a bowl, crumble in the fresh yeast (if using) and rub it into the flour with your fingertips. 3.Add the liquid and stir around with your fingers until mixed and no dry bits are left. 4.At this point, you can cover the dough and leave it to rest for ten minutes, which will make kneading easier, or carry straight on. 5.Work the dough by stretching and folding it over itself until it is smooth and stretchy. This

10

could take ten or fifteen minutes, depending on how vigorous you are. Don’t worry if it seems sticky at first, it will get less so as the flour absorbs the water. Don’t add any extra flour. 6.Put the dough back into the bowl and cover with the tea towel or plastic bag. Leave to prove (rise) until the dough has doubled in size. This should take about an hour at room temperature (around 20-22ºC) but will be faster if the kitchen is warm or slower if the kitchen is cold. 7.Oil the baking tray evenly 8.Wet the work surface, get your hands wet and scrape the dough out of the bowl. Press gently until you have a square and then pull each of the corners in turn into the centre and press in the middle to make them stick. Flip the ball over, tuck in any corners and round with your hands until you have a smooth ball. 9.Put the dough on the baking tray and cover, with the mixing bowl or by sliding the tray into the plastic bag, making sure that there’s plenty of space between the dough and the cover and leave to prove again for forty minutes to an hour. 10.About twenty minutes before the end of the proof, turn the oven on to heat up to 230°C (450°F or gas mark 8). 11.Uncover the dough carefully, making sure the plastic doesn’t touch it. If you want, you can dust the dough with flour or brush lightly with milk, beaten egg or oil for a glossy finish but this is not essential. Slide the tray into the oven. 12.Bake for fifteen minutes and then turn the heat down to 200°C. Continue to bake for another 30-40 minutes. 13.Wearing oven gloves, remove the baking tray. Put the loaf onto the cooling rack and cover with the tea towel to cool. Bread is easier to cut once it’s cool and tastes much better!

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly show on Choice Radio highlighting up and coming local musical acts. This month I’d like to tell you about Richard Clarke and the Rafters, a group from Worcester that produced what has to be my favourite album of the past year.

Richard’s a local lad and grew up in Worcester, but after a spell living in London decided to move back here in 2009. After a jamming session with Dan Bramhall who’s a drummer, they teamed up with Luke Elliot (bass and synth player) and formed a 3-piece band. Over four or five years Richard had written a number of songs for acoustic guitar, the band’s taken these and given them a really special sound for their album Hidden In Between The Trees. Its a lyrically thoughtful album, with heartwarming ballards with just a hint of alternative folk to them. Much of the material on the album relates to Richard’s return to Worcester, in particular track two, Where I Reside. If you listen carefully to the lyrics of the album’s other tracks, you’ll recognise more references to the city. The group recorded the album themselves, with help from James Willis, before it was mastered by Dave Draper, a producer who’s well known on the local music scene. I should just mention that the CD copy of the album is a work of art in itself. Richard studied fine art and designed a beautifully made cardboard fold out sleeve, with integral art cards that together create an image of the moon (if you buy it you’ll see what I mean!) It was launched

in March last year and went down well with the audience at the launch event. The band perform regularly in and around Worcester and never disappoint, they have a couple of dates planned between now and the end of July. I’ve heard they may be performing at Nozstock, the Festival near Bromyard over the weekend of 26 – 28 July. You can get more details on all upcoming performances from the band’s Facebook page. Their album ‘Hidden In Between The Trees’ is available to buy as a digital download for £6 or as a CD for £10. You can purchase it from his website, richardclarke.bandcamp.com You can hear Dave’s full interview with Richard Clarke and The Rafters on Choice Radio at www.choiceradio.org.uk and clicking on Live! In the past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.

The Worcester

Community focus

Volunteer Centre The Worcester Volunteer Centre was established in 1989 and promotes volunteering across the city. The Centre’s Chief Officer is Sally Ellison who has been with the organisation since 1991 and was awarded an M.B.E. in 2001 in recognition of her developments in services for the elderly. Here she tells us more about their work.

group focus

Our ethos is ‘Community Action through Volunteering’ and promoting the benefits of volunteering is the cornerstone of our organisation. Fourteen part-time staff work for the centre, but the real ethos of the organisation comes through the 120+ volunteers who help in all aspects of our services. The Community Transport Service, known as Worcester Wheels helps elderly and disabled people who are unable to use public transport. The scheme uses volunteers in their own cars, who are paid a mileage rate in accordance with HMRC regulations, as well as drivers and escorts using the Centre’s own fully adapted mini-buses and MPV’S. The scheme is always in need of more volunteers and anyone interested in getting involved should contact Hedley or Lorna on (01905) 24741. Our Youth Volunteering team help hundreds of young people aged between 16 and 25, who might need volunteering to gain experience or try different opportunities. This means they can add skills to their CV and seek to develop the core skills such as communication & team working, which employers & higher education are looking for. If anyone is interested, they should contact Tilly, Tash or Robyn. Other projects include Your Helping Hand which provides volunteers to undertake shopping, gardening and dog walking for the elderly and disabled. Each client’s needs will be carefully assessed and then they will be matched with a suitable volunteer. A recent quote from a satisfied client was: ‘My volunteer is more like a real friend

14

and she is so willing to help. It has meant that I feel happy living at home now as I know that I have someone who is there to help me’. Our Supported Volunteering for adults is called GOAL and supports individuals with a range of disabilities, to develop items that can be sold, including cards, key rings, purses and pictures, which raises funds for charity. This provides participants with a number of skills as well as the making of the items for sale. So far, the group has raised funds for Macmillan Cancer and Swan Rescue thus enabling participants to feel they are contributing to the community. More than four hundred people contact us each year. Their ages range from 14 to over 80 and we work with organisations across the city and surrounding areas. Whether it’s working with animals through to youth clubs via fundraising & the Scouts, we have more than 250 opportunities on our books. This is only part of what the Volunteer Centre does, if you want to find out more, would like to get involved in volunteering or have ideas for fund raising, then do call into our office at 33 The Tything, we are open Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm. We can be called on 01905 24741.

Well-Being

make the most of

summer

By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach based in Worcester Did you see the sun? Did you?! It came out the other day and I really hope that you jumped eagerly out of your chair, pulled on a pair of shoes and got some sun on your face! That’s just the start of our summer and I’m predicting that we’re going to have a brilliant one this year. Because maybe if enough of us believe that, it will come true! And then, you see, we’ll be able to use our lovely green spaces in Worcester to their full potential for lifting our spirits, boosting our health, kicking our activity levels up a notch and chilling out our poor stressed heads.

just need a change of scenery, then head for a green space which has some wooden structures like benches or trim trails. From there, you can do all sorts of press ups, step ups, foot elevated planks and what have you. On the grass you can hit all the non-equipment exercises, like squats, crunches, skydivers and, everybody’s favourite, lunges!

I bet that you’re not too far from a park where you live. I’ve just had a look at the map and I can see recreation grounds, playing fields, parks and what look like little scraps of grass but are actually plenty big enough everywhere across the city. One of the smallest is by my home in St Peters, and that’s the one I go to do all these health boosting things I’m going to talk about here. Why don’t you give them a try?

Idea Four: Go for a walk, an obvious choice really. What you might not know is that walking in itself reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and walking somewhere beautiful, leafy and green is even more powerful at doing that. By the time you’re done, you’re refreshed both mentally and physically. My absolute favourite place for this locally? The Worcester Woods Country Park. There’s many a time I have let my stress drain away up there.

Idea One: Take your dog/child/husband/wife/ neighbour out to play a game of frisbee, catch, tag or anything you like. It’s up to you which game you choose, you can even make one up. If you’re looking for the great energy boost that comes from movement, you just need something that’ll get you moving around! And, even better, something that’ll make you laugh. Because that’s what games are great at. Idea Two: Plonk yourself down on the grass and watch the clouds go by. Read a book, do some meditation or chat with a friend. And although this sounds a bit ‘hippy’, notice the feel of the grass underneath you. Take a moment to listen to the birds and enjoy the peace. If you have a crazy busy life, it may feel like your head breathes a sigh of relief. Idea Three: Do an outdoor workout! If you like to exercise but you’re not too fond of the gym or you

18

That’s just four possibilities to get you going. We’re right on the River Severn here, and that offers another great place to either be active or be peaceful. We have cycle paths galore with some stunning countryside to ride through, so get on your bike! And one thing that’s extra specially important to boost your health through the great outdoors; water. If you’re out in the sun, drink more. So here’s to a sunny, green, spirit lifting, life enhancing summer. Enjoy it! Tracy carries out personal fitness consultations in and around Worcester, and runs a virtual health club online, helping people to break bad habits and build great ones around fitness and food. Gardening

the joy of

Gardening

By Satya Robyn Here are some of the things we can learn from growing things:

I’ve just come in from weeding our garlic bed. Last year I slotted the purple cloves into the dark earth. Now they are half–way to becoming bulbs of their own, which we will pull up and hang in the shed until we’re ready to fry them with onions until they’re golden and delicious… Gardening is magic. I fell in love with gardening when I was writing my second novel which is about a gardener, Leonard. I interviewed the head gardeners of country estates, read books about gardens and visited gardens around the country. I noticed the love people had for their gardens. I started learning the names of plants and having favourites – peonies, hellebores, monbretia. The gardening bug had got me… Why should we garden? As well as bringing us fresh herbs and vegetables and posies of cornflowers and pink campion, gardening benefits our well–being in many other ways. These include the physical benefits of getting outside and moving around, and the emotional benefits of engaging in something completely different from our everyday chores or work. As we pay attention to the things growing and changing around us, we can put our worries in their proper perspective. To receive these benefits, it isn’t necessary to have three acres or lots of free time or money. All you need is a packet of seeds and a free half hour. You could grow basil on your window–sill or put a bright pot of pansies outside your front door. Maybe a blueberry bush or two, or a raspberry cane. There’s nothing like eating fresh berries in the sunshine… Start small and see if the bug gets you too!

20

1. Slowing down. I try to start my day with a slow stroll through the garden. It steadies me before a frantic day at work and allows me to pay attention to the slow changes that are always happening. This morning, the swan aquilegia is open! 2. Patience. Things go wrong in the garden just like they go wrong anywhere else – slugs, blight, cats trampling all over your new seedlings… It’s okay – take a deep breath and plant them again. You also need patience because plants grow at their own pace – there is no rushing a magnolia tree. But it’s worth the wait… 3. Remembering cycles. Nature reminds us of how everything moves in a cycle – plants retreat in winter so they can gather energy and get ready for a new burst of life in the spring. This is often how it is for us too. 4. Noticing beauty. There is always beauty all around us, but we rarely pause to notice it. If you’ve grown a forget–me–not from seed, you’re even more likely to appreciate its brilliant blue dots. If you’ve mowed the lawn, you’ll really appreciate the neat (ish) edges. Stand in your garden and see how much beauty you can find. Good luck with your growing this year, and if you don’t manage to grow something of your own, do visit some of the lovely parks and gardens we have in our area. Enjoy.

The Literary Festival There’s everything from Stories on a Postcard to Storytelling on a Farm as well as the choosing of Worcester’s very own Poet Laureate. Since it started two years ago, The Worcestershire Literary Festival is bigger and more popular than ever. The Director and Founder Lisa Ventura tells us more.

photo Geoff Robinson

All About...

Former Birmingham poet Laureate Givanni 'Spoz' Esposito, Lisa Ventura & Worcs poet Laureate Maggie Doyle

So how did it begin?

As far back as 1999 I was involved in local arts festivals, but even then I wondered why Worcester didn’t have something to showcase local writers and poets. A few years later, almost on a whim I started a Facebook group called ‘Worcester Literature Festival – good or bad idea?’ and I was absolutely inundated! In less than 24 hours, more than 200 members had come to me with ideas, including many local people who could offer help. I held a public planning meeting and I was surprised at how far people had come from, including writers from Malvern, Tenbury and Droitwich. My initial idea was to have a weekend of events but I decided it needed to be bigger, so in June 2011 we held our first festival.

This is the third Festival, why has it been a success?

I think we’ve filled a gap. I’m amazed that in the time from August 1999 until the first Festival, nobody else came along to do it! Other places have them, so why not here? Part of the Festival is the choosing of a Poet Laureate for Worcestershire; applicants submit two poems which are assessed by a panel of judges. After a final shortlist is chosen, ten finalists will read out their poems at our launch event in the Guildhall on Friday 14th June and a new laureate is then chosen. Maggie Doyle is our current bard for Worcestershire and does a lot of amazing work, visiting schools, reciting poetry at other events and acting as an ambassador for the festival.

24

Who comes to your events?

We’ve tried to make the Festival accessible and attractive for everyone. There are lots of events and competitions for young people and we’ve tried to encompass all genres of writing. We have a ‘Flash Fiction’ competition which is very popular. Entrants have to write a complete story in a maximum of 300 words or less. One of our judges is Calum Kerr, a writer who also runs the National Flash Fiction Day. We’ve had 93 entries this year with people entering from as far away as Dubai! We will shortlist ten entries for the final, when they’ll be read out at an event at Worcester Arts Workshop on June 15th.

Are any well-known names performing this year?

We have Pam Ayres performing in Tenbury Wells on 19th June and at the Swan Theatre here in Worcester on 20th in association with Worcestershire Live which has almost sold out. Our focus does tend to be on providing a platform for up and coming writers, so perhaps some of this year’s participants will eventually become household names! We’re also here to celebrate writing and poetry in the amazing setting of Worcestershire, so we’re holding a midsummer walk around The British Camp on the Malvern Hills. People taking part will meet poets along the way who will be reading their work, and we’ll end up at the Malvern Hills Hotel where the poetry reading will continue.

Worcestsershire Literary Festival takes place from 14th - 23rd June
