Editor’s message

Autumn has arrived! Something I didn’t realise about the Pitchcroft Fireworks Display is just how much money it raises for local charities. Every year around ten thousand pounds is raised, which is then donated to good causes. What’s better, the people of Worcester themselves decide how that money is distributed. As we go to print the fireworks display is due to take place on November 1st, and in the weeks after that Worcester Round Table will hold an evening when organisations and individuals can come along to say who they think should get a donation. See Page 18 for details. From jazz nights to the Victorian Fayre, there’s plenty to enjoy in Worcester this autumn, so flick through our pages and find out what’s going on. Have a enjoyable November & December!

Worcester Jazz & Swing Music lovers have plenty to look forward to during November and December as Worcester Jazz and Worcester Swing welcome a number of well known jazz musicians playing at their regular sessions at The Bank House Hotel in Bransford.

WORCESTER JAZZ ‘This is the fourth year of Worcester Jazz’ says Pat Holly who started it all. ‘I was involved running a jazz band, I like jazz and wanted something local’.

Val Wiseman

The very first evening of Worcester Jazz took place at Worcester Rowing Club in April 2011, with a session by the London Hot Rhythm Boys. ‘We had a very respectable turnout and so it began’ she says. The support of many other people helped to establish the event, and since April this year Worcester Jazz has been held in The Westminster Suite at The Bank House Hotel in Bransford. As well as plenty of local people in the audience, others are travelling from across the Midlands and beyond to attend. ‘The musicians are thrilled with what we’ve created here’ says Pat. ‘They like to play in front of an appreciative audience and are very supportive of what we’re doing’. Anybody is welcome to come along, but regular supporters can join the ‘100 Club’ and receive a discount on admission as well as discounted tickets to jazz events at Huntingdon Hall.

Jazz - more information: Worcester Jazz takes place on the first Monday of each month in the Westminster Suite, The Bank House Hotel, Bransford WR6 5JD. Doors open at 7pm, with music between 8pm & 10.30pm Entry is £10, or £9 for members, £5 for under 16s (accompanied by an adult) Forthcoming Dates: November 3rd – Julian Marc Stringle Quartet December 1st – Val Wiseman, ‘Pete Kelly’s Blues and All That Jazz’

6

Val Wiseman Val Wiseman was voted Top Jazz Vocalist at the 2011 British Jazz Awards and will be performing at Worcester Jazz on December 1st. ‘I am so looking forward to performing again at Worcester Jazz. The audience gave me such a warm welcome on my last visit and the musicians are first class! I am aiming for a night of good music and songs from the silver screen. 'Pete Kelly's Blues' is my favourite jazz movie. With the aid of some narrative to guide everyone through the plot, I will be singing the songs that were featured in the film and in the second half, again with some narrative, I will feature songs associated with other films. I might test a few memories here and invite everyone to guess which film matches the song. It should be an enjoyable night!'

All aspects of plumbing, heating & drainage undertaken. No callout charge. No job too small. All work guaranteed. WORCESTER SWING Following in the footsteps of Worcester Jazz, the third Monday of each month sees Worcester Swing taking place at the Bank House. This new music event bills itself as ‘the nostalgic music of the past performed by the top musicians of today.’ The new sessions will focus on swing music of the 1930s, 40s and 50s, an era regarded as the heyday of the great American big bands. The first session in September was well attended, and there are future plans to have a dance floor at the evenings. ‘This music has a broad appeal’ says the organiser Pat Holly ‘and we’re looking forward to welcoming new faces along in the coming months.’

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major

factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people

I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Recipe

Florence’s Apple & Blackberry Crumble Ingredients 150g plain flour 75g jumbo oats 75g butter 100g Demerara sugar

Roots at Rushwick is a Worcestershire Farm Shop on the Bransford Road. 01905 421104

Kindly provided by Meg at Roots of Rushwick

Blackberries Two large Cox Apples Granulated sugar (to taste) My daughter Florence (age 10) has made crumble to this recipe since she was very small, it is perfect work for small hands. Changing fruit with the seasons makes it an all year round family favourite, but I think that it is at its best now with freshly picked hedgerow blackberries, a flavour that transports us all back to childhood.

1. Preheat the oven to 170˚C. 2. Weigh the flour and oats into a mixing bowl. Cube the butter and begin to rub in to the dry mix using your fingertips to create a crumble. This only takes a few minutes, it doesn’t need to be very fine. 3. Stir in the Demerara sugar and put to one side. 4. Peel and core the apples then cut into cubes of approx 1cm. Fill a serving bowl 2/3 full with the blackberries and cubes of peeled apple then sprinkle with granulated sugar to taste. 5. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the fruit, gently pat down to give an even coverage. 6. Bake in the oven for 30-40 minutes until the crumble is golden brown. Serve with warm custard.

Well-Being

Embrace your Imperfections! By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach in Worcester Easier said than done I know, but a worthwhile pursuit nevertheless. It sounds great as a soundbite but does it work in practice? Well, yes from personal experience I can vouch that it does.

You see, I have fat on my thighs that I cannot get rid of. It just doesn’t want to go away. Despite the fact that I exercise regularly and that my diet is pretty good, it doesn’t shift. It’s not strictly true that I couldn’t shift it, if I tried - if I worked out 3 times more and ate absolutely perfectly for the rest of my life, I could probably get it to go. But you know what? I’m not prepared to do that. And I’m not capable of it anyway because no human is capable of perfection.

of you. Keep making good decisions about what you put into your mouth and the exercise you take. That’s all you need to do. Results will come. Obsessing over the bit of you that you’d love to whittle away won’t help in any way.

Frankly though, my heart is healthy. I’m in decent shape. My muscles get me from A to B with relative ease. And no, I can’t wear a skintight catsuit with supreme confidence and look like Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, but so what? So there’s a bit of fat on my thighs. Am I bothered? Nope. I used to be. And if it was affecting my health, I would be still. But as it is, all it does is serve to remind me that I am a real person without a magic mirror that photoshops my legs when I look into it, and that although I don’t fit the magazine ideal of beauty, I have a whole life to live and that leaves me very little time to worry about my thighs. It’s just an imperfection I have. I want you to have a go at doing the same. Stop worrying about, obsessing over and getting hung up about all the bits of you that you don’t think are perfect. That you don’t like. Believe me, the only person that thinks they’re a big deal is you. Choose instead to focus on the things you do like about yourself, and focus on the world outside

Worcester Round Table Every year thousands of pounds of money is donated to local charities, thanks to The Pitchcroft Fireworks Display. This charity event is organised by Worcester Round Table, which wants to hear from organisations and individuals about who should benefit this year. The Bonfire and Fireworks Display is one of Worcester’s largest public events and has been running for over thirty five years, and every year it raises around ten thousand pounds which goes directly to good causes in and around Worcester. A core team of volunteers organises the event, with help that includes the loan of vehicles and donations of wood to build the giant bonfire. On the day itself dozens of volunteers from local youth organisations and the Rotary Club help with organising and marshalling. Once the takings are counted, the Worcester Round Table organises an event where charities, groups and individuals can come and make their case for receiving a donation. ‘It’s a completely open invitation’ says Paul Valentine, ‘and there is no maximum grant. We give to a wide range of people, from larger organisations like St. Paul’s Hostel to individuals who are facing severe hardship or difficulties. One case in particular sticks in my mind’ continues Paul, ‘when we helped a young family whose daughter died at the age of five years from Congenital Heart Disease, a rare condition in children.’

CHARITIES WHO BENEFIT FROM THE FIREWORKS TICKET SALES HAVE INCLUDED: New Hope Worcester helps the families of young people with disabilities and complex care needs. They received a donation which helped to get the charity’s base in Ronkswood up and running. ‘We had just acquired our centre but needed to bring it up to standard, buy equipment and pay staff to run sessions in the holidays’ says Jean Wilson who founded the project. ‘Worcester Round Table gave us a real boost when we

18

needed it most, not only did they provide the money, they got stuck in and came along to help us paint and decorate the centre. They were very supportive of our project, we felt very lucky.’ Worcester Young Voices is a choir for children aged between 7 and 15. Based in Barbourne, they come together every Saturday to rehearse and perform. Carol Green is their musical director. “We started from scratch about a year ago when it became clear there was a demand for a youth choir but there were few other places for children to go locally. We help the children to read music, improve their vocal skills and experience singing in public. Our singers develop their musical skills but also experience an increase in confidence that has a knock-on effect in other areas of their life. We have an open-door policy and welcome children no matter what their experience of singing or background. Worcester Round Table sponsors a number of choir places and we’re extremely grateful.”

Do you know a local charity, good cause or even an individual which is deserving of help? In the coming weeks Worcester Round Table will organise an event where you can come and tell them more about how the money should be distributed. You can get in touch with them and find out more via their website, www.worcester.roundtable.co.uk

music feature

Local Talent

By Dave Webber

I’m Dave Webber and I present a weekly music show on Choice Radio, the service for Worcestershire Royal Hospital. This month I want to tell you about a band who describe their music as alternative and surreal.

Chevy Chase Stole My Wife are a four piece band from Worcester who formed early last year. Emma Howett, the lead singer, says that at the time they just wanted to get out, play some gigs and have some fun! They’re a hard band to categorise but there’s plenty of fun and humour in their music. When they came on my radio show recently they described themselves as ‘the ultimate band/lovely/cuddly and energetic’! All the group already had plenty of experience playing in other bands as well as playing at various venues around Worcester. As well as Emma there’s Rose Hannant on bass, Stu Silcock playing lead guitar and Neil Burton on drums. Their music is very catchy, high energy guitar driven rock with vocal harmonies. Trying to describe the influences in their music is difficult – some people compare them to Blondie but that could just be because they have female singers. Last year they spent some time with Dave Draper at Tower Studios in Pershore, recording a four track EP. The tracks on it are On The Moon, Attention Seeker, RITA and Harry Hill, which as the name suggests is a tribute to the baldheaded comedian. There’s even a short ‘making of’ documentary on YouTube which is worth a look! They’re currently busy recording another four tracks and have promised me they’ll have a launch party for it once it’s ready.

Other tracks of theirs include ‘I Fell in Love with a Tightrope Walker’ and ‘The Girl Who was Death’, a song inspired inspired by the episode of the same name from the 60s TV show The Prisoner. It’s a bit heavier than some of their other tunes. They play an awful lot of gigs, and are certainly racking up the miles as they travel around the area playing at local festivals. Their performance at this year’s Worcester Music Festival was awesome and they also played at The End Festival (at Callow End), Nozstock, and Lakefest. Recording is taking up most of their time this autumn but they will be playing at The Lamp Tavern in Dudley, on November 28th.

If you’d like to hear some more of their music then search for them on Facebook or Youtube, they also have a BandCamp page, www.chevychasestolemywife. bandcamp.com

Worcester Victorian Christmas Fayre Thursday 27th November until Sunday 30th November in Worcester City Centre It’s the 22nd year of Worcester’s Victorian Fayre, and as in previous years there will be more than a hundred stalls filling the city’s streets with the atmospheric sights, sounds and aromas of Christmas. Attracting visitors from all over England and Wales, Worcester Victorian Fayre is now the leading Victorian-themed street market in the West Midlands. Last year it’s estimated there were more than 100,000 visitors over four days. Wandering through the streets, there will be plenty to browse from sparkly jewellery and festive home decorations to traditional roast chestnuts and warming mulled wine. A wonderful range of products are waiting to be discovered within the local arts and crafts area, there’s also an international area, a festive gifts area and a food court. This will be an early opportunity to embrace the Christmas spirit with the singing of choirs and instrumental performances. There will be dance displays and street entertainment including juggling Victorian-themed stilt walkers. As in previous years there will be fairground rides, allowing you to experience the fun of the fair by stepping aboard the Victorian carousel while listening to the sounds of barrel organ music.

Other Christmas Events Many other events take place around the city at the same time as the Fayre. Worcester Cathedral is holding it’s own Christmas Fair in the Cloisters which takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For details of this and other local events see www.allaboutworcester.co.uk

Malvern Theatre News

Calamity Jane Coming soon to Malvern Theatres, the classic musical Calamity Jane starring Jodie Prenger (Oliver!, Spamalot and One Man Two Guvnors) alongside Tom Lister (The Water Babies, Emmerdale) and a cast of multi-talented actors and musicians. This brand new production gets to the heart and soul of the musical. Calamity Jane can outrun and outshoot any man in Deadwood. Hard, boastful and desperate to impress, she travels to Chicago to recruit a star, Adelaide Adams, for the Deadwood Stage. But things don’t go too smoothly for Calamity, as everyone in town favours the new girl and she struggles to keep her jealousy and pride in check. It takes her long standing enemy Wild Bill Hickok to make her see sense, and realise her Secret Love… With an Oscar nominated score that includes The Black Hills Of Dakota, The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), Just Blew In From The Windy City and the Award winning song Secret Love, don’t miss this new production which blows into Malvern for one week only. Calamity Jane runs from 1st – 6th December. Eves 7:30pm, Wed and Sat Mats 2:30pm.
