Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Papandreou feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people
money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Worcester & Hereford areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major
factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people
I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

new hope new chances Surrounded by noisy, happy children, Jean Wilson is in her element. We’re at the Saturday Club of New Hope, an organisation set up three years ago for children with disabilities and complex care needs, their parents and their carers. Sam
‘It started because I couldn’t find suitable respite care for my daughter Emily who has autism and severe learning difficulties’ says Jean Wilson, who set up New Hope in 2010. ‘I started to wonder if other parents felt the same, they did, and so New Hope was formed.’ Finding a premises was the next step. ‘ We approached Worcester Community Housing and had to produce a Business Plan, which I somehow managed!’ laughs Jean. ‘Fortunately they accepted my plan and allowed us to use the vacant premises of a former Neighbourhood Office. They have been brilliant, so helpful to us.’ After that came a series of applications for funding, which was needed to refurbish the building in Ronkswood and buy play and mobility equipment. Three staff were employed and volunteers came forward. Since the summer of 2010 they’ve run a holiday club during every school holiday and hold a regular Saturday club, only cancelling once because of snow. Today, funding comes from many sources, some large like the Lottery and Children in Need, many

smaller but equally important, including local groups, companies and individuals. ‘At first three families came along, now we are used by eighty three families’ says Jean. ‘They come from as far away as Warwickshire and Halesowen, which proves how hard it is to find this sort of setting for children with disabilities. People will travel to find respite care, this morning we have eighteen children in, our holiday club usually has around twenty five.’ Children at the holiday club enjoy days out to fun parks, bowling and swimming sessions, the next trip being planned next is to The Snowdome in Tamworth. ‘The families who use us are especially happy with the kinds of activities we provide, for example we’ve taken the children horse riding. One of the boys, Luke, wouldn’t go on a horse, he had tried before but was simply too scared. With the help of New Hope, Luke went riding. One of our volunteers was a rugby player, big and strong, he held Luke firmly, and once aboard Luke found his presence reassuring which gave him the confidence to keep

going as the horse moved off. He goes riding with his school now, something that he couldn’t have managed before.’ ‘New Hope is a saviour for our family’ says Luke’s mum, Justine. ‘Luke has significant learning difficulties and complex needs, New Hope enables us to have much needed respite on Saturdays and in the school holidays. It allows us to take our other two children out to places Luke wouldn’t be able to access or enjoy. The staff are so caring and understanding, I often find Luke being cuddled when I come to pick him up. He loves New Hope so much that he runs in when we pull up.’ Laura Hamilton is a member of staff who started as a volunteer. ‘I like seeing the children achieve something. One boy in particular sticks in my memory, when he came to us he had real difficulty socialising with others. After coming back he’s now progressed and is happy in the company of others. Of course working with children is fun, they are a blast to be with.’ Jean continues, ‘Another boy, who is severely autistic, was leaving when one of his shoes fell off, because he hadn’t put it on properly. I said to him ‘what are you like?’ and he replied ‘I’m unique!’ For me that sums up the humour and enjoyment of working with young people.’ The work of Jean and the staff of New Hope is being recognised, with various awards and nominations after only three years. Even so, they’re not treating that as a distraction from the task in hand. ‘’The job is varied and rewarding’ says Jean, ‘but it is hard work. What we do is special because we see the children progress and grow up. When you see the difference you can make, it spurs you on.’
If you have a child who could benefit from New Hope’s Saturday or holiday sessions, or if you have any other questions, you can contact them on (01905) 355 295 (Saturdays and school holidays only) or on 07847 377 760 (at all other times), or email jean.wilson46@yahoo.co.uk For more information about New Hope, you can visit: www.newhopeworcester.co.uk

Well-Being
cycling in Worcester By Tracy Reck, Personal Fitness Coach based in Worcester One of the amazing things about living in a city like ours, is the fact that it’s so compact. It’s easy to get around, especially by bike! Add to that the fact that we are surrounded by the loveliest countryside, and it will keep you fit, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to ride.
Commuting by bike is brilliant as we have dedicated cycle routes that will get you into town from various places without having to battle with traffic. It’s such a great way to start the day, you’ll have done more exercise than most of the population by 9am, so you can wander round your workplace with a smug grin on your face for the rest of the day. Until it starts raining and you have to ride home...BUT if you have a good set of waterproofs you’ll be fine! Those same cycle routes will carry you out to Pershore, over to Malvern (if you’re loopy enough to want to ride up the hills), or off to Droitwich along the canal. My favourite route is the one to Pershore, which is just beautiful. Wherever you are in Worcester, you’re just a few minutes away from rolling hills, lush fields and woods, beautiful views and clean, fresh air, so how lovely to be able to get out into all that and breathe it in.
for, and climb as many hills as you can. There are loads! I can particularly recommend the top of Redhill Lane if you want a ‘fitness test’ type of hill. When I first started riding it, I would grind to a halt (and topple over) before I got to the top. Now, although I wouldn’t say I fly up it, I can definitely do it, so it’s a great benchmark of fitness. What else can I tell you about cycling? It’s good for shaping your legs as well as your cardiovascular fitness. That’s a nice thing. So keep cycling through the autumn and watch the leaves change color. Cycle through winter and feel invigorated by the (very) fresh air. Just avoid the icy days, it’s never fun feeling like Bambi on two wheels. And please get yourself a helmet. Worcester is so perfectly placed to mix up the urban conveniences and the gorgeous openness of the countryside that you’re missing out bigtime if you don’t go and explore it all on a bike.
I have a couple of friends who are moving to Worcester at the moment. Most weekends they’re over here, roaming round the city on their bikes, finding all the little treasures that we as residents can lose touch with. If you want to fall in love with your home city again, get on a bike and use a fresh pair of eyes to look around. Then there’s hills. I love hills. And yes, I do realise I’m probably alone in that. But they make me feel like little mini interval sessions have been left lying around for me to intersperse with my bike ride. As I am a fitness geek, and always loving ways of making workouts more effective in a shorter space of time, hills fit right in with my way of thinking. If you cycle for fitness, look out

Local Talent
By Dave Webber
Worcester has a growing number of places where you can see live entertainment, often for free, and part of that is thanks to Russell Underwood. He runs a regular Vaudeville night at Monroe’s Cellar Bar on Foregate Street as well as The Big O at O’Neills. Russell must enjoy being busy because he’s also lead singer with East of the Sun, a band that manages to write and perform some amazing songs. Although the bands roots are in 70s rock, it took them a while to settle on a name and style of music. Around eight years ago Russell met drummer Jamie May after joining a band called Rainmaker. When this band finished they tracked down a bassist online and formed Volume One, then with the addition of another band member formed a different group again, called Uncle Monty! The band drifted apart as children came along, and work got in the way, but after another year they came back together, and in 2011 East of the Sun was born. Their first gig was The Bridge Bash at Stanford Bridge (near Great Witley) where they played alongside bands including Ocean Colour Scene and Dodgy. After that they gigged heavily for eighteen months, got some money together and produced their first album, called ‘The Future We Make For Ourselves’, which you can find on Bandcamp. East of the Sun

Perhaps its Russell’s sense of ‘anything is possible’ that gets him so far in the music business. In April this year he started another band with his wife Kelly and his friend Andy Davies. The Grimaldi Band has a much more acoustic, folk feel to its music, and with that in mind Russell wrote to a number of big folk festivals asking if they had any space left in their line-ups. Shrewsbury Folk Festival did, and so despite only playing as a group for a few months, they performed five times during the weekend, and in the words of Russell, ‘had a wail of a time’! You can find some of their music on the reverbnation website. Russell’s determined to keep both bands active and playing live in and around Worcester. ‘Its two very different sides of music’ he says, ‘and both equally enjoyable. Its a challenge to be playing in more than one musical genre, but starting the folk band has made me a more confident guitarist. You make a mistake and people know exactly who made it!’ You can hear more of Dave’s interviews with local musicians on Choice Radio at choiceradio. org.uk and clicking on Live! In the Past. Choice is the hospital radio service for the Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, a voluntary service broadcasting a wide variety of music and programmes for patients seven days a week.

All About...
Worcester Male Voice Choir Worcester Male Voice Choir was formed in 1987 and performs around fifteen concerts a year. Terry Dillingham joined six years ago, and as well as learning like all choristers an ever increasing repertoire of 150 songs, also looks after their publicity. express the inclusive nature of the Choir and that is without mentioning the enjoyment and challenge of the music and singing. One chorister recently remarked just how much he enjoys rehearsals each week. The fun is stimulated by our talented music team Nic Wright, Sheila Leatherland and Haydn Thomas plus Chairman Geoff Ruddock.
Are you open to new members? So what have you got coming up? Our Annual Concert is on Saturday 26th October at St George’s Roman Catholic Church in the centre of Worcester. As well as 60 choristers in our choir we will be joined by the Tenby Male Voice Choir. Welsh Male Voice choirs have a wonderful tradition of first class singing and Tenby are right up there with the best. As well as a guest choir we will be joined by Mary McNally (Clarinet/Saxophone) and the outstanding Keith Hearnshaw on the church’s splendid organ.
What tours has the Choir completed and are there any personal highlights? During my short period as a choir member we have sung in many national venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Symphony Hall, The Eden Project as well as cathedrals in Coventry, Durham, Lichfield and on many occasions in our own Cathedral in Worcester. Recently more than 80 choristers, partners and friends travelled to the North East of England, giving five performances in four days. The highlights were a performance in Durham Cathedral closely followed by a joint concert with The Shiney Row Male Voice Choir before a full house. A final recital at the National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas was moving and poignant.
What do you enjoy about the Choir?
Comradeship, fun, commitment, achievement, friendship, performing, entertaining, and access to more social events. All of these words help
14
The Choir has grown in both quantity and quality over the past few years and we currently we have over 70 choristers. However new members are always welcome. If people are interested then come along to a concert and see how much fun it is. Alternatively attend a rehearsal at the Angel Centre, Worcester on a Monday or Wednesday evening at 7.15pm and listen, join in, see what it’s like. Michael Jeeves, our Membership Secretary on (01905) 640953 will give you more details and arrange to meet you at the Angel Centre. See also www.worcestermalevoicechoir.org.uk.
How can we get tickets for your next concert? The 26th October at St George’s Church will be a wonderful evening. Tickets cost £10, but if anybody contacts me, quotes All About Worcester and convinces me they have never attended a Worcester Male Voice Choir concert before, I will provide discounted tickets; telephone 07809 740108 or 01905 821659.
The Worcester Male Voice Choir is always looking for new members: Contact Michael Jeeves, the Membership Secretary on (01905) 640953. He will give you more details and arrange to meet you at the Angel Centre where they rehearse. You can also look at the choir website, worcestermalevoicechoir.org.uk

Recipe
Apple Tart Tatin Kindly provided by Richard Potter, Red Hen Cookery Chef At this time of year with the darkening nights and distant summer sun, most people need a pick me up, and some good seasonal cooking is surely the best remedy! With Halloween and bonfire night on its way there are plenty of sweet edible treats for the kids, but what about something a bit more grown up? So here is a great recipe for Tart Tatin, with its sweet buttery caramel, juicy apples and crisp pastry this is a much prized dessert and rightly so, it’s like a toffee apple, but for grownups! Ingredients • 7 apples: Ideally firm and crisp eaters, Russets are perfect for this, such as Egremont or Ashmeads Kernel • 200g golden caster sugar • 50g butter • 175g ready-made puff pastry
Serves 6 Method 1. Peel, halve and core the apples, then put in the fridge, uncovered, for 24 hours. Don’t worry about any discolouration. 2. Put the sugar into a 20cm heavy-based ovenproof frying pan along with 50ml water and leave to soak for a couple of minutes, then cook over a medium heat until golden and fudgy. Take off the heat and stir in the butter, and a pinch of salt, until well combined. Then carefully arrange the apples in the pan, round-side down, bearing in mind the caramel will be very hot, and put back on the heat – you may need to cut some of the apples into smaller pieces to fill in the gaps. Cook for 5 minutes, then take off the heat and allow to cool completely. 3. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Roll out the pastry to 5mm thick, and cut out a circle slightly larger than your pan. Put back into the fridge to rest for a few minutes.

4. Put the pastry on top of the pan and tuck in the edges around the fruit. Bake for about 30 minutes until the pastry is golden, then remove from the oven. Allow to cool for 5 minutes, then place a plate, slightly larger than the pan, on top and then, very carefully, using oven gloves, invert the tart on to the plate. Best served warm, with vanilla ice cream or lightly whipped cream. 5. Enjoy!
