Editor’s message

Welcome to the July edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

July 2011 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 www.allabout-local.com www.facebook.com/ allaboutmagazines Photo front page: Livestock grazing on the Malvern Hills Malvern Hills Conservators Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About West of the Hills is distributed to 2,800 homes and businesses Booking Deadline: For Aug/Sept - Wed 13 July

I got a little depressed last week, when I realised the longest day, on June 21st, had already passed. Perhaps its the idea that half of the summer was already gone, or maybe the idea that from now on the days will get shorter and shorter. Fortunately, the process takes a long time and there’s still plenty of long summer evenings ahead! On top of that, this month’s magazine is full of different ways of spending the summer, whether its gardening, music or partying that you enjoy! We’re especially fortunate this month to have two family-friendly music festivals in our small area. The first, West Fest on July 9th, has become a firm favourite for many people in West Malvern and beyond. Well done to the organisers and good luck on the big day. Secondly, Colwall Cricket Club is hosting a Family Music Festival on Sunday 10th July; its the first time, and so we’ll wish them all the very best with it.

Is Equity Release the Answer? by Rob Weale from Colwall With interest rates for savings at an all time low and pension annuity rates failing to deliver a decent standard of living, care home costs increasing and mortgage deposits for children and grandchildren becoming near-impossible to save, more and more over 60s are turning to their properties as an alternative way of meeting the shortfall. Whatever an individual’s reason, it’s a dilemma many people find themselves in. The need for well-qualified independent advice has never been greater. The History Equity Release has for many people been a dirty word, often associated with the mis-selling horror stories of the 1980s and 1990s. That stigma has been hard to shake; however, largely due to FSA regulation, qualifications, plus improved products and flexibility, we see Equity Release becoming ever more popular and a real consideration for those needing either income, lump sums, or a combination. This is often to help fund retirement, home improvements or to help a younger family member get on the property ladder; an advanced inheritance if you will. Independent Advice Equity release products can be complicated and it is important to receive specific tailored advice from an independent specialist, since everybody’s circumstances and needs differ. It is essential the advice you seek is independent and from the whole of the market, and only from firms regulated by the Financial Services Authority. As an extra precaution, companies that subscribe to SHIP (Safe Home Income Plans) can give extra peace of mind, this is a self-regulating industry body set up by lenders and offers standards as well as ethical codes of conduct. The Products Equity Release can take on many different forms. Some plans involve the sale of part or all of the property, often referred to as ‘Reversion’ schemes. There are plans that are very similar to a typical

6

mortgage whereby the loan has interest payments, but are deferred, known as a ‘Lifetime’ Mortgage. Within the product itself there are also other variants including lump-sum payments, income payments, or a draw-down facility giving ad-hoc payments. There are pros and cons to each and every type of equity release and the correct solution will only become apparent once all circumstances are considered. The Process The first priority is to establish whether or not an equity release is even suitable. Sometimes the property is not acceptable or the ages of the individuals do not meet lending criteria. Sometimes, after careful consideration, it is a straightforward decision that this type of solution does not sit happily for the individuals concerned. The decision should not be entered into lightly, the need for face to face consultations is never greater than here. The Alternatives With your family and adviser, the alternatives must be considered, for example; do nothing, downsize, borrow from family members, arrange an interestonly mortgage to name a few. It is important that all angles are explored, only then can you make an informed decision. Get Informed Here at Smith Weale we have a supply of free, impartial booklets to help you make an informed decision. If you would like to receive a copy please contact us. All our consultations in regard to Equity Release are free and without obligation.

Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates based in Malvern. We will ensure you reach an informed position regarding the Equity Release market including alternative options that may be available. Together we will help make the critical decisions and choose the very best solution tailored to your individual circumstances from the whole of the UK market place. Green Fingers Bridget Evans from Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall has advice about shady goings-on in the garden. Well summer is here in all its abundance and the flowers are filling the air with a mixture of delightful scents. It is so green and lush everywhere despite the lack of rain earlier in the season. Just recently, many of my customers have been asking for plants that grow in shady areas and luckily there is a wide selection of such shrubs and herbaceous plants. It is important to enrich the soil in dry shade with compost in early spring and late Autumn to retain moisture. Shrubs such as Hydrangea Grandiflora have long white racemes in late summer and grow well in dry shade. Rhododendrons of all colours and sizes will thrive in a woodland type setting. In early spring before the leaves come on the trees, fill the area with early bulbs such as Anemone Nemorosa, Chinodoxa, Scilla, snowdrops, Fritillary, Bluebells and Erythroniums. These will enjoy the early spring sunshine for flowering and then be shaded from the summer sun by the trees. For dry shade there is the amazing Heuchera which

is so easy to breed that we have an amazing range of coloured leaves to choose from! Geraniums, Epimediums, Lamium, Ajuga, Bergenia, Hosta and Vinca all thrive in dry shade. If you have a moist area in shade, plants such as Astilbe, Cimicifuga, Hostas, Astrantia, Campanula and Geums will grow along with ferns such as Dryopteris and Matteuccia, to create a collection of lush foliage and flowers. There are many types of fruit and veg that prefer some partial shade. When planting fruit areas you can use this as an advantage to maximise space. Apple trees can be under-planted with raspberries and currants, which in turn can have a groundcover of strawberries! Plants such as Claytonia Perfoliata, Parsley and Winter Purslane will all grow in partial shade and produce leaves great for winter salads. So don’t give up on that area under the tree or hedge. Think about how you can make it come alive!

All About... ...Colwall Family Music Festival A brand new music festival takes place on Sunday 10th July. The Colwall Family Music Festival offers a day of music and entertainment in a beautiful setting. The organiser is Neil Collins.

So what are the details?

The Festival takes place at Colwall Cricket club and runs from midday on Sunday until 10 O’clock in the evening. We have two stages providing entertainment on the Ghost Meadow Stage and the Pavilion End. Our idea is to hold a day of music and fun in a beautiful location, where people of all ages can enjoy the hospitality the club has to offer.

What entertainment is there?

We have a full range of acts covering folk, jazz, rock, pop and world music. Bands will play a set of up to 25 minutes and we have local group Careful Jepson hosting the final hour which will include some special guests. Alongside the music we have entertainment with a relevance for families; RchaoS, a puppetry theatre company bring their special creative talent to a show, ‘Why the Rabbit has Long Ears’, based on a folk tale from Guatemala. The audience can get very much involved, as well as the main performance they’ll have the chance to devise a show and perform it for family and friends with the assistance of a professional puppeteer. We’re also aiming to have Circus Skills workshops and other games. Lastly we’re encouraging artists, craftspeople and food producers to set up stalls in a special area of the festival. We are also planning a few surprises! The festival site is a beautiful place to relax and socialise and we’ll make sure families feel welcome and safe.

Do you think the Cricket Club will make a good venue for a festival?

I was approached by the club who are holding a series of events over the weekend and wanted something new for the Sunday. They’re granting us use of the

18

entire Ghost Meadow field with its pavilion and marquee. There is plenty of parking and the views are fantastic. Families are welcome to bring a picnic along but we are asking visitors not to bring their own alcohol onto the site. The club will be offering a fully licensed bar in the pavilion with profits helping the upkeep of the grounds, providing the marquee and promoting the club to future young players.

West Fest donates profit to

local good causes. Will you be doing anything similar?

We’re on a smaller scale but we’re hoping to do our bit. The cricket club is hoping a boost in its bar sales will help fund their continuing activity. Stall holders are not being charged for their pitches but if they are a ‘forprofit’ organisation then we are asking them to make a donation towards St John’s Ambulance. We will also aim to pay all the artists and performers as well as we can. They work incredibly hard to develop their talents and we welcome this opportunity to reward them, albeit limited by the comparatively small capacity of the festival. Our primary aim is to provide a day of family entertainment in support of the cricket club.

where can people buy tickets?

We are licensed for up to 500 visitors and we’re encouraging people to use our website to buy tickets. Remaining tickets will be available for sale on the day itself. The good news is that children under 12 come in for free, as long as they’re accompanied by an adult. Adult tickets are £6, but we have discounts available; four tickets for £20 and ten for £45. By Allison Maxwell from Colwall For sufferers of hay fever, the symptoms are all too obvious; a sniffle in the nose, watery eyes and perhaps an attack of sneezing are all too common at this time of year. This early spring this year meant the symptoms started early for many of hay fever’s victims. Its estimated in Britain there may be as many as 12 million people affected. It is not just pollen that causes hay fever, man-made atmospheric pollution plays its part as well, made worse during high pressure when pollution builds up in the air. More often, it could be a particular tree or weed that affects you. Earlier in the season, oak and pine trees create a problem for some people, later in Autumn, some weeds and fungi spores affect others. Pollen is at its heaviest concentrations in the morning between 6am and 9am, concentrations in the air rise again in the evening. A good spell of rain can literally help to wash it out of the air and relieve symptoms.

What causes hay fever?

Hay fever is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen causing the release of histamine around the nose and eyes. Typical symptoms include red, itching eyes, and a runny or congested nose. The conventional medical approach to hay fever generally consists of three types of medication. There are antihistamines which block the release of histamine in the body, which is responsible for swelling and congestion. There are steroid-based nasal sprays and decongestants such as ephedrine. However, dietary changes and natural supplements may help significantly reduce the need for conventional medication. Any food may give a problem, but in my own personal experience dairy products have been the main culprits. You might like to try eliminating milk,

Natural Alternatives for Hay Fever cheese, ice cream and yoghurt to see what effect this has. My experience is that this often helps clear a hay fever problem. Rice milk or oat milk is a pleasant alternative to cow’s milk for drinking and on your breakfast cereal. You will need to make sure, however, that if you’re eliminating dairy you still have enough calcium in your diet. Foods rich in calcium include spinach, sardines, tofu, refried beans and sesame seeds.

Natural Hay Fever Remedies

There are numerous natural hay fever remedies that can help cope with this common allergic reaction. Here are a few suggestions. • Chamomile tea can help ease the symptoms of hay fever. Herbal tea made from peppermint can help clear up congestion inside the nose and respiratory tract. • An inhalation might help you breathe normally again. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a bowl of steaming hot water and inhale the steam. Do this two or three times a day. This should provide some instant relief as it helps removes congestion. • One the simplest home remedies might be ginger tea or ginger juice with a spoonful of locally produced honey. This supports the immune system and acts like an expectorant. Garlic could also help to clear and reduce any congestion. • Vitamin C creates natural antihistamine activity in the body and there is some evidence that it can help control hay fever symptoms. A typical dose might be 250 - 500 mg of vitamin C taken three or four times a day. Homeopathy is also reported to very effective in treating hay fever. In most cases, conventional and natural medicine complement each other in the care of allergy relief.

Grazing on the Hills By Helen Stace I had an unusual call this month from a friend concerned that cattle had got out of the enclosure on the hills and were roaming free and likely to come to grief. Sadly, people have been interfering with the cattle and sheep fencing on the site, so I thought I should explain how and why we manage grazing on the hills. In April I wrote about tree management to preserve the open grassland. This is only half the story, because we don’t want to risk polluting springs or watercourses on the hills by treating the stumps with herbicides. This means that the cut stumps sprout, initially forming scrub, but ultimately growing up into forest of multi-stemmed trees. There are two main options for dealing with this; mechanical treatment or grazing. Mechanical control by mowing is very labour intensive, can be a dangerous operation on steep slopes and has the disadvantage of leaving cut material lying on site. This smothers the grass beneath and rots down to release lots of nutrients back into the soil, encouraging vigorous species of grass to outcompete the rare and interesting open grassland plants. Grazing is a much better option. Sheep and cattle can graze inaccessible or steep ground, break up dense stands of bracken, bramble and scrub and control the vegetation gradually with minimal impact on other wildlife. The Malvern Hills were originally grazed by animals put out by people exercising their Common Rights. This practise declined as fewer people used their rights and the last grazier finally stopped after a dog chased 40 of his sheep over a quarry cliff.

26

The Malvern Hills Conservators have put in a lot of effort to reinstate grazing. Initially they used a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to introduce a shepherd and a flock of sheep on the southern hills. Then, with Higher Level Stewardship Scheme support, they introduced sheep and cattle to the northern and then the central hills. In these areas we use temporary electric fencing to keep the animals from wandering onto roads and to target the grazing on key areas, such as grazing off the regrowth from cut scrub. We are now making excellent progress towards returning some of the areas of scrub and secondary woodland back to more valuable open grassland. If you see anyone interfering with the fences, please do alert the Malvern Hills Conservators, by phoning their office on 892002. If you walk your dogs on the hills, please ensure that you keep them under control, particularly when the sheep are heavily pregnant or have young lambs at foot. If you want to avoid the area being grazed, information about the whereabouts of the stock is published weekly in the Malvern Gazette and on the website at www.malvernhills.org.uk.

Active Brains How to keep your child’s brain active this summer! Over the long summer holidays, children can forget a lot of what they learned in the previous term. Studies have shown that children who read books and keep their brains active over the summer months are higher achievers in tests and assessments when they return to school in September. You can incorporate learning into most everyday activities, so next time you are popping to the park or out for a drive make sure you have some games planned. It can be as simple as ‘I spy’ or adding all the numbers on the number plate of the car in front, just to keep those little brain cells chatting to each other. There are lots of interesting ways to keep your brain awake over summer and here are just a few. • Go to the library and enter a summer reading programme. Alternatively set your own challenges to get the whole family reading, for instance giving individual points for every book read and keeping a chart. Then set a family prize, which could be a picnic, a trip to a local theme park or perhaps each family member can pick out their own treat and accrue points towards reaching their goal. • Head onto the hills or take a trip into the countryside and turn this into a great learning experience. Children love a shiny new notebook in which to keep a summer journal, including everything they have seen. Disposable cameras are great, ask your child to take photographs throughout summer and compile a scrapbook about their holiday. This is a great way to capture a child’s creativity and imagination, you can see their summer break through their eyes. • Children love to play so even the simplest puzzles will get their brain working, from a jigsaw to more complex puzzles like a rubik cube. Don’t forget some traditional family favourites like Scrabble or Monopoly which are great for word and money skills. • If you are out and about in town, look for every opportunity for your children to read; it might be signs in shops, displays in a museum or the menu

By Rachel Tobin

in a local cafe. Get them to remember everyone’s order and verbally pass the order on to a waitress. Spoken skills and confidence are soon gained from this experience and children love to be in control! Put older children in control of the money, checking the bill and handing over the cash. • Maths is all around us, especially in cooking and baking, ask your child to weigh out measurements as you go along and you get a tasty cake at the end of it – don’t forget to cut it into quarters! Craft activities like beading jewellery help younger children with counting. They help support pattern recognition with the added bonus of a great bracelet at the end! • If you’re heading away on holiday, involve children in reading up on where you are going, they can help plan your activities from sorting out spending money to using a road map (keep the sat nav switched off!!) • If you are staying local use the environment around you. Try growing your own vegetable garden or window box; take a trip to the library to find out what plants are best for this time of year or plan a nature trail with other parents and their children. Joining up with friends and other families can offer extra support throughout the summer. With so much to do over summer I hope you won’t hear ‘I’m bored!’ too much. If you are looking for something a little more structured Kumon Maths and English study centres are open all year round and offer support to thousands of students with their learning. The Kumon programmes work at a pace that is tailored to each child’s ability and children can start from 3 years upwards. By continuing to learn over summer children are less likely to be stressed when returning to the new academic year. Many students either review work or actually move ahead so they hit September confident and happy. Kumon is aimed at ‘little and often’ so summer study can work hand in hand with summer holidays.

Introducing Rachel I am a qualified teacher, presently working on the one-to-one Mathematics and English programmes in a local secondary school. I also run the Kumon Mathematics and English centre at St Andrews’ Church Hall centre in Malvern. As a Kumon Instructor for over 14 years I have seen first hand the importance of parental involvement in children’s learning. Working in partnership with both parents and children is an incredibly rewarding and exhilarating experience. I have a BA Honours degree and worked in business management for many years before gaining a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and entering the world of teaching. You can contact me on malvern@ kumoncentre.co.uk or (01684) 833648. For more details about Kumon please go to www.kumon.co.uk

MumMade What do you get when you combine five creative mums, homemade cake and lots of tea? MumMade of course. We are five Malvern women who got together to fulfil our creativity while being with our children. We produce unique goods for sale but our focus is not purely profit. Our goods are hand made and have to meet our core value of ‘treading lightly upon the earth’. This means using anything from recycled, reloved, reinvented or natural materials to seasonal garden produce. Our products are as eclectic as the group itself, including felting, reclaimed bunting, cutlery hooks, natural playdough and herb salts. What we make reflects our interests, the season and what we find on our travels. Our children are central and we work alongside them or share childcare so they are part of our creations. The result is far beyond ‘making things’. From our initial dream, MumMade has blossomed, strengthening friendships and resulting in a real sense of pride. We hope to grow to provide a community facility where all ages can explore their creativity, connect socially, learn and eat great, homemade cake! We will be ‘in residence’ with our products 3rd to 7th August in the beautiful summerhouse at Blue Ginger Gallery, Cradley. Please do come and see us or, if you are a Mum who Makes, drop by for a chat about how to join us. Please see www.mummade.org.uk or call Kelda on 07841 344691 for information.
