Happy New Year! Living in Colwall, you get to see, and occasionally hear, all sorts of birds. Last week I was awoken in the early hours by two owls communicating with each other outside our bedroom window! In springtime, if you’re lucky, you’ll hear a cuckoo calling across the fields. Look upwards and you may well find a few buzzards circling high above. Yes, we are spoiled in our part of the world for bird life, but as Bridget reminds us on Page 30, we shouldn’t take them for granted. Winter is a hard time of year for the birds, and any help we can give them in the garden will ultimately benefit us, in the beauty and variety they provide. Let’s keep reminding ourselves that Spring is just around the corner, not long now. Have a good February!

Happy New Year? By Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall At this time of year I like to reflect on the twelve months that have just passed and try to anticipate the year ahead. Never in my memory has the financial landscape looked so uncertain, and uncertainty is bad for markets, bad for business, and most importantly bad for households. For me, the fate of the world economy and the prospects for financial markets in 2012 and 2013 depend primarily on the answers to three big questions: Will the Euro zone crisis be resolved in a timely and effective manner? The outcome of the Euro zone debt crisis remains very unclear, even after the Brussels summit of December, implying that the crisis is likely to continue and possibly even rise to another crescendo later this year. Will the US economy maintain its recent better performance? The United States’ improvement in performance has been only partial, limited to certain sectors of the economy , and while some of these improvements should be sustained, the overall economy is likely to be held back by many of the same headwinds that eroded performance last year. Will the Chinese economy avoid a hard landing in 2012? The Chinese economy remains excessively dependent on external demand and hence acutely vulnerable to the deepening downturn in Europe. So even though domestic monetary and fiscal stimulus will almost certainly be employed in 2012, China’s overall growth rate seems likely to be lower than in 2010 or early 2011. The Outlook In the developed world the normal recovery process after a recession has not materialised since the collapse of Lehman Brothers. The reason, of course, is the over-indebted or impaired state of balance sheets, particularly in the household and financial sectors. This means that large parts of developed economies must focus on debt repayment by restraining consumption and postponing new investment, leading to sub-par economic growth. In response, governments initially stepped up their
6
fiscal support programmes, but since debt levels were already high, the additional burden of official sector debt has now triggered a sovereign debt crisis across much of Europe and threatens to do so even in the US and the UK if deficit spending is not curtailed. This implies that 2012 will be another year of balance sheet repair by the private sector, austerity by governments, and slow growth in most of the advanced economies. One bright spot, however, is that inflation rates should generally decline. In the emerging world there was initially a strong bounce back of economic activity but this is now faltering due to the failure to de-couple from the developed economies. The continued heavy dependence of growth in these economies on exports to the developed world means that in most cases domestic demand growth will not be vigorous enough to offset external weakness. As in the developed economies, headline inflation rates, which are already slowing across much of the emerging world, will fall further in 2012. What this all means to you Whilst the outlook remains uncertain, markets remain extremely volatile, and the household purse is continually squeezed, there are measures you can take to be best placed to ride the waves of the economic storm or indeed take advantage of the investment opportunities. If you have not been contacted in the last 12 months by your financial adviser, with a view to re-assessing the suitability of your portfolio, rebalance of your holding, or reaffirmation of your attitude to risk, dare I suggest you have the wrong adviser? What is important is constant reassessment and reviews of your spread of investments, whether it is a small ISA or a substantial pension, ensuring the continued suitability coupled with correct management of your investments.

Bellringing There’s a full moon in the sky above Bosbury, and the broad, sturdy tower of the church looks beautiful under its eerie light. Inside, the bell ringers are busy, teaching a group of newcomers who they hope will help keep this centuries-old tradition alive. Across the country, the numbers of bell ringers has declined and it’s a similar picture locally, so the churches in our area recently decided to take action. ‘We realised the ages of our ringers was creeping up and we needed to to something’ says Frank Seabright, the Tower Captain at Bosbury. ‘We’ve been on a new national course and we held a publicity drive in May of last year. We got six new learners and our latest group has come from the enthusiasm generated by our teachers telling others about it’. Inside the tower at Bosbury the chat is animated. ‘I do love ringing at Bosbury’ says Matt Sim, ‘they’re big heavy bells here’. Matt usually rings at Ledbury but he’s here tonight as a teacher. Usually, it takes around six months of practice until a beginner is ready to join in properly. They also have to learn the correct terminology. Ringers operate as a ‘band’. The end of the rope is the ‘tail-end’, the fluffy, colourful bit higher up is the ‘Sally’. The way in which ‘changes’ are written down is called the ‘method’, and the bell ringers memorise it as a sort of pattern. These methods are given names as obscure as the ‘Double Norwich Court Bob Major’. If it sounds confusing, the ringers assure me it isn’t, at least not once you’ve learned what they’re on about. And there’s help at hand, coming from the Tower Captain. ‘Its all about ringing your bell at just the right moment’ says Matt.’When we ring, I call what’s next, a little like conducting an orchestra. Sometimes we try something new, sometimes we ring an old favourite’. This is only the third time the novices have rung the bells, and there’s still lots to learn. For tonight’s practice session, the clappers are secured into a fixed position, which allows the bells to be swung without making a noise. ‘It’s better for the neighbours’ explains Frank Seabright, ‘and in any case we have a simulator, which gives the same experience for the learners’. Looking carefully, I can see sensors which have been placed adjacent to each bell. They are
12
Please mention All About Magazines when responding to adverts
for Beginners connected to a computer downstairs, which registers the bell’s movements and shows whether ringing takes place in the correct sequence. While the bells don’t chime, the weight of swinging them remains the same, and controlling the bell takes practice. Of the six bells in Bosbury’s tower, the tenor bell is the heaviest, weighing in at about one ton. The idea is to slowly build the momentum of the bell until it swings freely, then comes the control. In order to ring the bells in sequence, or as the jargon goes, ‘ringing a change’, the novice ringer must gain a feel and an understanding of the correct technique. Jenny Lawrence from Mathon has been ringing for around forty years and regularly goes on bell ringing holidays. ‘I’m planning the next one at the moment’ she says, ‘we’ll be going to Norfolk. Last year was Derbyshire, and in previous years we’ve been all over the country. You go to some fabulous churches. We’ll ring at five or six churches each day. Once, I stayed with a friend in Washington DC and I visited the cathedral. They asked me ‘Are you free on Saturday?’ and before I knew it I was ringing there!’ Why has ringing become such a part of Jenny’s life? ‘For me, there’s nothing quite like a peal of bells ringing out across the countryside on a crisp winter’s morning. It’s such a part of England and I’d hate to ever see it stop’. ‘People living locally tend to take the ringing for granted, but they notice when it’s not there on the days when we don’t ring’ says Annie Kay, who rings at Bosbury. Annie’s one of the younger members of the band, and proof that this is a pastime for all generations. ‘Once learned it’s never forgotten. We try and ring for every service, but the special moments are New Year’s Eve as well as Christmas and Easter. We enjoy the challenges too. For special occasions mostly we ring a quarter peal, but sometimes go for a whole peal which will take three hours to complete. It has to be perfect; one mistake, and it doesn’t count! We do try to learn new methods, you can never learn everything but everyone thrives on having something new to achieve’. After practice, it’s time for another tradition and the ringers adjourn to the pub, appropriately named ‘The Bell’. ‘As a general rule bell ringers are friendly people’ says Annie. ‘You can turn up anywhere and be invited to join in’.
If you’re interested in learning to bell ring then please contact Frank Seabright on 01531 640252.

All About... ...The Colwall Players ‘Murder at Colwall Grange’ is a new drama production by the Colwall Players. Their Chairman Steve Hockett tells us more.
So is this a classic ‘Murder Mystery’?
In some ways yes, but its much more than that! As well as the drama the audience will sit down to a meal during the performance, and become involved in solving the crime. Act One sets the scene, and is followed by the first course. Another course follows the murder, and as coffee is served the audience get the chance to interview the characters before naming the villain. Its a little bit like holding a murder mystery evening at home but this has an extra dimension. The food for the evening will be the creation of Leslie Hitchen, an excellent local caterer.
Where & when is the play set? The year is 1944 and the scene is Colwall Grange, the seat of Lord and Lady Evendine. We’re aiming to evoke an atmosphere of that time, and if the audience want to come in period dress they’re more than welcome to enter into the spirit of the evening.
You wrote this play yourself?
We performed a murder mystery a few years ago but we thought we’d have another go. I wrote this and I’m directing it, although at the moment I don’t appear in it! This time the drama is strengthened very much by the element of improvisation by the actors. They will stay in character throughout and will answer the audience’s questions as authentically as they can. I’ve always said that as a group we should extend our range and I think we should do that as far as possible.
Tell us some more about the Colwall Players
We first had the idea to start the group in 1986 and we’ve run continuously since then. Numbers vary, we fluctuate around the forty or fifty mark, with actors and patrons who enjoy the social aspects of the group.
18
People are always welcome to join, you don’t have to be able to act! Generally there are between two and four productions a year and we also have the Young Colwall Players who start at around age five or six. We do everything from pantomime and comedy to serious and renaissance plays, there’s something for all tastes.
Murder at Colwall Grange
It is a cold, windy and wet evening at a gloomy Colwall Grange. Grey clouds overhead with the threat of thunder ever present. It is nearly Christmas, 1944 and the War has taken its toll on the residents of Colwall. Lord & Lady Evendine, already down on their luck, are waiting patiently for the one ray of sunshine in their lives to appear, their young and lovely daughter, Arabella. She is due to visit them from London along with her new fiancé, Jack. At the Grange we will meet the morose and sombre family retainer, Sponge. Also, the generally quiet, but knowledgeable maid, Emily Loop. The cast is completed by the family friend Jean Maple, the Reverend Tobias Tope and Strange the family chauffeur and handyman. One of these people will meet a swift and violent death. Enjoy a two course meal (vegetarian option available) and watch the drama unfold. Watch as the suspects are questioned. Take part in the questioning if you would like to. Over coffee, make up your mind as to who is the murderer or murderers and their motive. One lucky person who ‘detects’ the right answer will win a bottle of champagne. Will it be you? Friday 24th and Saturday 25th February 2012; 7:30pm; Colwall Village Hall. Tickets are £15 each and will be available from Goodwins Estate Agents, Colwall (01684 540300). As this production includes a meal you are urged to purchase tickets beforehand as we will be unable to ‘cater’ for people turning up on the night.

Spring Cleaning Tips for the Home With the first flush of spring just around the corner, Anne Matthew at Housekeepers of Malvern shares with us some suggestions for clearing out the cobwebs and throwing open the windows to spring clean the home ahead of the warmer weather and lighter evenings. With many of us enjoying the benefits of an open fire or wood burner over the cold winter months, soot and dust soon settles throughout the home. Starting with a damp cloth and warm soapy water, gently wipe down your skirting boards, sills, picture and dado rails and door panels, removing dust and cobwebs as you go. Windows too will benefit from a good clean, particularly where condensation and mildew have settled. I find warm water with a drop of washing up liquid and a microfibre cloth are just as effective as branded products for getting the windows gleaming. Just remember not to clean windows when the sun is out; the water will evaporate quicker than you can clean and you’ll be left with streaky windows. Whilst you’re working on the windows, sills and frames, it’s worth turning your attention to curtains
and blinds which will appreciate a light vacuum using a clean upholstery attachment. Gently lift dust from the fabric by setting the vacuum on the lowest suction. Spiders notoriously lurk between curtain poles and window frames, as do other pests including ladybirds, so always check first. Horizontal aluminium and PVC blinds can be gently cleaned in a shallow bath, being careful to line the bath with a towel first so as not to scratch the base of the bath. Again, a drop of washing up liquid will breathe new life into your blinds. A word of caution; do not allow the blind mechanism to become wet. Two pairs of hands are definitely better than one when cleaning blinds! You’ll notice a significant difference just from tackling the above areas alongside your standard weekly cleaning. Other areas of the house will be discussed in our next article. In the meanwhile, start saving any old toothbrushes or small paintbrushes and we’ll address their many uses next time.

‘Sponsor a Tree’ in the Colwall Community Orchard As I write this, we have just held our annual Orchard Group Wassail, and I hope that many of our readers came along and enjoyed the evening with us. In days gone by people believed that wassailling at midwinter wakes the orchards up for the new season, allowing them to look forward to a good harvest in the coming year. We’re also taking more direct action to enure this happens, so to improve our annual harvest we’re planting a community orchard for Colwall. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers, we have lots of fruit trees heeled in at the orchard ready for planting out in March. We will be grazing the main field, so as well as the usual tree stakes, rabbit guards and mulch mats, we need to put a tree cage round each one. We will number all the trees as we plant them, and will label each tree cage to show which variety it is. As we are a small charity, with limited core funds, we need some help to pay for tree cages and other materials So, would you like the opportunity to sponsor a tree in the community orchard at Colwall Village Garden? Sponsorship for each tree will cost £60 and if you
26
wish we can add a brief sentence to the label saying ‘donated by / in memory of -----------‘. If you wish to help by sponsoring a tree, you can find more information on our website at www.colwallorchardgroup.org. There is a form on which to record your details which gives you the option, if you are a taxpayer, of making a gift aid declaration so that we can reclaim the tax on your donation. Please download the form, fill it in and send it with your cheque, made payable to Colwall Orchard Group, to our Treasurer. If you don’t have access to the internet, please ring Helen on 540569 and we’ll give you a paper copy of the form. We need to plant lots of new trees to replace those that die or fall over. Sadly we saw a mature Lime tree fall near the school in Colwall in January. It is always sad to see trees go, but I would like to thank all the field staff of the Malvern Hills Conservators for their rapid response and the calm and efficient way in which they cleared the tree. The Conservators have a tree safety policy and inspect our mature trees regularly, especially alongside roads and properties. This means tree surgery can be carried out on trees at risk, to reduce the number which fall unexpectedly.

Green Fingers At Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget is looking after the birds. Bird-friendly plants in our gardens are a valuable source of food to many birds and it is important to plant shrubs and trees which provide berries and soft fruit. Although many farmers now take hedge management seriously, the British countryside has lost up to half of its hedgerows since 1945 and many of those remaining are still flail-cut before the birds eat the berries. Birds need to feed up as much as possible in autumn to enable them to survive the winter. Berries and other fruit are full of carbohydrates and a great source of easily digested energy. This Autumn and early winter have been good for the birds with an abundance of fruit, there were apples and hawthorn berries still hanging on in January. So, who eats what? Many native birds are opportunists, shifting their diet to eat berries when abundant. Smaller birds like wrens, firecrests and long-tailed tits are mainly insect eaters, but other larger insect eaters such as robins, marsh tits, blackcaps, spotted fly catchers

and chiffchaffs switch to fruit when in season, as will some primarily seed eating finches. Blackbirds and song thrushes eat a huge range of berries. Song thrushes go for honeysuckle, rowan and elder. Mistle thrushes owe their name to their liking of mistletoe, but are also fond of holly and defend well stocked trees from other birds. Here’s a few shrubs and trees you could plant; Cotoneaster, Pyracantha, Ilex (Holly), Viburnum opulus (Guelder rose), Sorbus (Rowan), Apple, Prunus (cherry), Sambucus (elder), Euonymous Europaeus (Spindle), Blackthorn, Berberis, Amelanchier, Crataegus (hawthorn). Ivy and Honeysuckle such as Lonicera Caprifolium and L. Periclymenum also provide a good late source of edible berries. So why not replace one of those half dead woody shrubs in the garden (we’ve all got one that never does very well!) with a berried variety. While you are out there don’t forget to put out the birdfood as well!

Notice Board Light Up a Life (Christmas 2011) Colwall Rotary Club and St Michael’s Hospice This year we were blessed with fair weather, the tree light dedication services were extremely well attended and the money raised for St Michael’s Hospice surpassed all expectations. Gift Aid has still to be added in to the total, but so far the income raised for the Hospice has reached £1342. Nicky West, the Hospice’s Chief Executive said: “This is an amazing total. The money raised will make a significant difference to patients and carers at the hospice”. None of this would be possible without the wonderful support of the two venues (Colwall Coffee Lounge & Brewers Arms in West Malvern), local businesses and individuals. Thank you so much to everybody who contributed so generously to Light Up a Life through their time, efforts and donations.
Thank you for your support
