Editor’s message
Spring time! Hello to our new readers in Ledbury! For the past four years we have been delivering this magazine to the villages West of the Malvern Hills. Customers and Ledbury residents have asked us again and again to deliver in in town as well, so here we are. Spring is in the air, and this month’s magazine has dozens of activities and ideas to get you out and about. Our magazine is not just about events, it is also highlighting the many groups in our area who help others. In recent months, two new food banks have opened to help people struggling to feed themselves and their family. You can read all about it on page 10. Here is hoping for sunshine and warm temperatures in April and May, but even if the weather is cool, temperatures will be rising at Eastnor’s Chilli Festival, so try and get along there if you can! Enjoy the read.

Advice
The ‘Brave New World’ of financial advice By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall New rules for financial advice, known as the Retail Distribution Review, or RDR, should put an end to the ‘wideboy’ image of some advisers. The regulators will be hoping the rules, which came into effect on December 31, will overturn negative stereotypes and put the provision of financial advice on a more professional footing. Traditionally there were a swathe of different types of advisers, including independent financial advisers (IFAs), multi-tied agents, tied-agents, as well as a legion of bank advisers who may be any one of the above. Each could have an ‘alphabettispaghetti’ of different qualifications, which can mean next to nothing to the average consumer. While some might show four years of advanced study, others are equivalent to just a GCSE pass. Many appeared to offer “free” advice. Instead, the adviser collected a commission if the customer bought recommended products. This payment was often disguised within complex product charges which can seriously dent the value of your investment over time. Not all operated on that basis. Some, like our company, offered an hourly fee, and a combination of the two, charging an agreed fee which is offset against any commission collected. But in the wider market, for those investing in pensions, ISAs and other investments, the situation was confusing, which made it difficult to find a trustworthy and impartial adviser. The new rules, which we embrace, should change this. They should make it far easier for customers to see exactly what advice they are paying for, by effectively banning commission. Although some commission payments will still exist (for example on some insurance products), pension and investment companies won’t be Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. They can help make the critical decisions, mange your investments and pensions, and choose the very best solution tailored to your
allowed to effectively pay an adviser an upfront sum for arranging a product then claw it back through opaque product charges. Under the new regime, all charges have to be agreed in advance. Customers should get a simple document which sets out the advice charges, showing the charge for implementation as well as the charges for managing their money if an ongoing service is required. Rather than pay an hourly fee to the adviser, it is possible, should implementation be sought, that the fee is simply deducted from the product arranged. However, this will have been agreed at outset, allowing a comparison where product charges are concerned, and also a comparison of adviser charges. This creates a much more level playing field and creates healthy competition between advisory firms. This change, known in the industry as the Retail Distribution Review, should drive standards up across the board, with all advisers, whether they are arranging one company’s products or qualified IFAs, required to gain additional qualifications and complete continuing training. The new regime will create just two types of advisers. An IFA will be able to advise on all investment and pension products and will recommend products from the whole market. They will be more concerned with financial planning and ongoing service and advice rather than ‘restricted advice’, which is centered around product selling and not always able to look at the bigger picture where the client is concerned.

Local
Food Banks Today, people living in our area will go without a proper meal, because they can’t afford it. There are many reasons why this happens, it could be because of debt, family breakdown or a delay in the payment of benefits. Two Foodbanks in Ledbury & Malvern are helping local people who get into difficulty, and they’re being supported by a big collection organised by local Scouts later this Spring. LEDBURY FOODBANK Every week, Ledbury Foodbank hands out 24 food parcels to local families and individuals. Who the recipients are remains a secret because confidentiality is a key part of the work they do. It only began five months ago, but is already meeting a steady demand for help. ‘Setting up was surprisingly easy’ says David Kirkham, ‘but we are always in need of donations. We have collection points in local churches and around the area. People bring food to us, in fact many people simply turn up to our sessions to hand over a bagful of food, or with a donation of £10 or £20, for which we are incredibly grateful’. Some people turn up asking for food, but most are referred by charities and statutory agencies working in the area, including Age UK, health visitors and others. They assess the needs of individuals or families who are then given a voucher they can hand in to the foodbank, for enough food to last them for three days. Local churches are the driving force behind the
10
project, but other local groups and individuals are heavily involved as well. ‘At first there was some question as to whether such a service was needed locally’ says David. ‘We decided the only way to find out was to try. Since then we’ve not looked back. At the moment we are managing to meet local demand, but we anticipate an increase in need with imminent changes to the benefits system, and frankly we are worried we might not be able to keep up.’ ‘It saddens me the Food Bank is needed, but its just the way things are.’ says David. ‘We run an open session on Wednesday and Friday mornings at St Katharine’s Hall, where people can come in, but we have an emergency system in operation as well.’ SCOUTS For this year's Community Week, the 1st Colwall Scouts Group will be organising collections for local foodbanks. 'Food poverty has been in the news a lot recently' says Lynn Lee from the group, 'it even turned up in The Archers! We like to carry out activities within our own locality and Community Week is the perfect moment to do that.' Scout Community Week is a moment when things get done. Last year the Scouts in Colwall helped on the village's new allotments, helping to install a water system, digging over plots and installing a garden moved from the
Spring Gardening Show at the Three Counties Showground. 'A team of around fifty children plus adult leaders can achieve a lot in a matter of hours!' says Lynn. This year's Community Week takes place from 3rd to 9th June, when the Scouts will be asking people to help our two local Foodbanks. 'The people we help are a part of our community whether we know them personally or not' says Lynn. 'We know that local people are incredibly generous and their support would be fabulous for the Foodbanks'. More information about the Scouts collection in Colwall will be circulated nearer the time. If you want to find out more in the meantime, you can call (01684) 541733.
When Malvern Foodbank advertised for volunteers they were overwhelmed with the amount of support they received. They’ve been equally overwhelmed with all the donations of food as well as the financial support received so far. They open on Mondays and Thursdays, and operate from premises on the Lower Howsell Road Industrial Estate. Like other Foodbanks, people seeking help are referred by agencies working in the area. ‘We don’t pry into the circumstances of the people we help’ says David, ‘ and we won’t talk about their circumstances, unless they initiate that conversation and genuinely want to talk. We can signpost people towards other forms of help. We believe its important to tackle the root cause of people’s problems, so we look to local agencies not only to provide short term support but also to help turn people’s lives around in the longer term.’
MALVERN FOODBANK Malvern’s Foodbank only opened for business in February, but is already working hard to keep up with demand. When we visit on a Monday morning, its a buzzing hive of activity, with volunteers preparing food boxes that will be sent to needy families and individuals. ‘An existing service run by Lyttleton Well (in the town centre) was coming under more and more pressure,’ says David Wareing, one of the founder members. ‘The idea to set this up came out of a discussion between the members of Churches Together in Malvern. It seemed that Lyttleton’s experience might be the tip of an iceberg.’ The food stock here is non-perishable, things like pasta, packet and tinned foods. The Foodbank also tries to include toiletries because people struggling to put food on the table won’t spend money on themselves, they often put the welfare of others and even pets before their own needs.
There is still lots of work to do for Malvern Foodbank. Sustaining their work will need a steady supply of donations and for that to work they need to build links with organisations who can help them. Another big question is storage. ‘We are fortunate to have premises’ says David, ‘but we have limited space and our current task is to set up a method of stock control to make sure our food remains ‘in date’. At the moment we are looking for more storage capacity. If we expand we will need to think about new premises, and we would also like to increase our opening hours. At the moment we’re only able to serve the public a couple of times a week.’ If anybody wishes to help us with either financial donations or offers of food, please drop into the Lyttleton Well on Church Street in the centre of Malvern, they are open six days a week. The Foodbank is also affiliated to the Trussell Trust, a charity that supports the work of Foodbanks in the UK and beyond. You can read more on their website at trusselltrust.org

Chilli Festival at Eastnor Castle Sunday 5 & Monday 6 May Its one of the most colourful and certainly one of the hottest local events this Spring! The Chilli Festival returns to Eastnor Castle for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. One of this year’s highlights will be a chilli eating competition. ‘Its the first time we’ve ever done anything like this’ says Sarah Roberts, Eastnor’s Marketing Co-ordinator. ‘We’re looking for entrants who can handle the heat!’ Last year’s event was so popular the organisers decided to put it on once again. ‘Last year was fantastic, and we’ll be building on that success’ says Sarah. ‘We’ll have all kinds of stalls offering everything from chilli chutney, chilli chocolate, cakes and even a chilli wine! These are supplied by a mix of local and national food suppliers and companies.’ As well as cookery demonstrations there’s music from a Steel Drum band and from Los Squideros, a fantastically fun local group whose music has a mexican and latin style.

CHILLI FACTS Chillies come in a huge array of shapes, sizes, colours and heat strengths. They are indigenous to Central and South America and arrived in Europe following the Spanish conquest. The heat of chillies is measured using the Scoville Scale which was developed by an American pharmacist named Wilbur Scoville. Tabasco Sauce has a heat of between 2,500 & 5,000 units, According to Guinness World Records, the hottest chilli is the Trinidad Scorpion 'Butch T' with a rating of 1,463,700 Scoville Heat Units!

All About...
the Ox Roast Sixty years ago thousands of people crowded into Ledbury for an Ox Roast Gala to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation. A bold plan to repeat the event has been launched and Jan Long, who’s one of the organisers, tells us more.
How did the idea come about?
Last November the Rural Media Company showed a film of the Ox Roast that took place in Ledbury on 2nd June 1953, when Her Majesty was crowned Queen. I suggested a showing at Ledbury Market Theatre. Local fruit grower and producer Norman Stanier attended and was fired with enthusiasm to repeat the idea exactly 60 years later, on Sunday 2nd June 2013. He brought his thoughts to a Rotary meeting and the Town Council, all of whom were fully supportive of the idea and the rest, as they say, is history!
How will your event compare with the original in 1953?
Putting the idea into practice is easier said than done. Over 7,000 people attended the Ox Roast in 1953 and health & safety laws were far less stringent. The 2013 version is a real challenge. The Roast will be held in the High Street and cooked by a professional firm under strict procedures to meet health requirements. We have the carving tools commissioned and made in Sheffield for the 1953 event. Although they are for display purposes, they will be used for carving the symbolic first slice! In 1953 they sold Ox Roast Club membership to start fund raising, and we are doing the same this time around.
What else will be going on that weekend in Ledbury?
The roast takes place on Sunday, but the day before is Ledbury Community Day and promises to be an exciting time. Among others, the Ledbury Area Cycling Forum will be organising bike rides, while if you are passionate about ploughing or Morris Dancing, there will be plenty to see and do. On the day of the Roast, a food, drink and crafts festival is being held. Even if you’re vegetarian there will be food to choose from. 1950s vehicles, including tractors and cars will be on display, members of the local Amateur Dramatic Society will be dressing in 50s costume,
22
The Civic Society are organising a special event and there will be activities for children.
Who is involved?
It has been crucial to have a team of committed and hard-working people, all of whom have brought different skills to the committee. We are all volunteers, no-one is being paid for their expertise, but we all share the same vision of serving the Ledbury Community. We have an active group of people drawn from local businesses, The Mayor and Town Council, Rotary, local groups and societies, local farmers and many others. The local police will be present as well as stewards for safety and security. For those who don’t want to walk too far, a park and ride service will be available.
What are your hopes for this event?
The Ox Roast provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Coronation Diamond Jubilee, exactly sixty years since Queen Elizabeth was crowned. Moreover it is a great excuse for a fantastic street party on a massive scale showing all that is excellent about our town and the wider district. After austerity, cut-backs, shop closures, doom and gloom, we want our community to have a day of fun and happiness, creating a blueprint for the future, that will be talked about for many years to come. We also want to raise as much as possible for St Michael’s Hospice to enable them to continue their vital work.
If you would like to help with preparations for the event, please contact the Secretary of the Ox Roast Committee Una Morgan on 01531 631347. You can find out more information at www.ledburyoxroast.org.uk

Well-Being
Dealing with addictions & compulsions By Satyavani (Fiona) Robyn from Malvern I have a confession. I am a teensy bit addicted to social media. Facebook, Twitter…on a bad day, I check my notifications on Facebook several times in five minutes. This gets in the way of my work, but it also sucks time from me and leaves me feeling jittery. It gets worse when I’m trying to avoid something, like writing my novel. All of us have various addictions and compulsions, some more powerful than others, and with various side–effects and consequences. We might have a colleague who isn’t worth speaking to until after their first cup of coffee, or a friend who’s hopelessly addicted to a soap opera. Some of us might feel our emotional well-being is dependent on our daily walk on the hills. The Buddhist approach to addiction is that we become dependent on certain habits or substances when we are trying to avoid something we don’t like. We have a stressful day so we have a glass of wine when we get in, just as a treat and to help us relax, but as time goes on we become more and more likely to deal with our stress in this way. We can’t avoid the things we don’t like, but we can start to face them square on without running away. If we feel stressful after work, we might sit quietly for ten minutes and let our muscles slowly relax, or talk things over with our partner. If we’re avoiding dealing with a nasty pile of paperwork, we might start to tackle it bit by bit rather than reaching for the chocolate. Since the New Year I’ve been keeping my compulsion in check by banning myself from the internet before midday. It has an amazing effect on the shape of my mornings, and leaves me free to write and to get things done with no distraction. It’s still early days, but I’m feeling a new freedom, if you would like to feel this same freedom, here are my tips for dealing with your own addiction: Acknowledge that you have a problem. Take a long objective look at the behaviour you feel worried about, ask your friends (who don’t have the same addiction!) for their opinion, and try to notice when you’re going into denial. In the Twelve Step programmes, the first step is to acknowledge that we are no longer in control of
28
our addiction but that it is in control of us. This is a big step. Become aware of any patterns. Get curious about your compulsion. How do you feel just before you eat the second slice of cheesecake? Are you squashing down some anger? What happens when you don’t eat it for five minutes, can you feel any tension in your body and how does it change over time? What are you trying to avoid? Try making a few notes every day and see if anything emerges. Make a plan. Will you tackle your addiction by going ‘cold turkey’, or cut back gradually? What new (good) habits can you substitute for the old ones? Will you give yourself incentives, like spending the money for cigarettes on a weekend away? Try writing a list of benefits of breaking your addiction and go back to it when you waver. Seek professional help. Addictions can be incredibly difficult to break, especially when they have a long history, when substances are involved or when you’ve been using them to avoid some psychological pain. There are a number of places where you can find specialised help – speak to your doctor, look online, find a local Twelve Step programme, book an appointment with a therapist, get a book out of the library or ask a friend to support you. Don’t give up. If you fall off the wagon, try to understand what went wrong and then repeat the first four steps. Get extra support if you can. It can take several attempts to change deeply ingrained habits, so taking one step backwards before taking two steps forwards can be part of the process. Good luck and wish me luck too – if you see me on Facebook before 12 midday, tell me off!

Green Fingers At Caves Folly Nurseries in Colwall, Bridget Evans has an important message for all gardeners. www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 April and May are fabulous months to be in the garden. The sheer exuberance of plant growth is a joy to behold, you can even smell plants growing! All my plant orders are now leaving the nursery and soon my plants will be growing in gardens all over the country! I was recently reminded by the manager at Hidcote Gardens that Caves Folly had been supplying plants to National Trust properties for over twenty years. Almost twelve years ago The National Trust made an announcement that it was not going to use peat on the first day of the Chelsea flower show. Having made this decision they suddenly realised there were only a handful of wholesale nurseries growing plants in Peat-Free Compost. This was good for my plant sales, as we had been growing in peat-free, organic compost for ten years previously. We were ahead of our time environmentally but it cost us lots of time and money experimenting with peat free alternatives before we arrived at our present compost. Many of my customers still ask why it matters if they use a peat-based compost, so here is some useful information. What does peat do for the environment? Peat locks carbon and prevents it from entering the atmosphere, where it forms CO2, the main greenhouse gas. UK peatlands store approximately 3 billion tonnes of carbon. If this was lost as CO2 to the atmosphere, it would be equivalent to over 20 years of UK industrial emissions (according to the National Trust). There’s around 100kg of carbon per cubic metre of peat, equivalent to the emissions from one car driving 2,000 miles.
Why shouldn’t we dig it up? Peat develops very slowly, so it may take hundreds of years to replace each metre that is extracted for use in private gardens. At present, the peat dug up for Britain’s gardens releases almost half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. On top of this, amateur gardeners account for almost 69 per cent of all peat used in the UK, mainly in multi-purpose compost and grow bags. A recent poll of more than 1000 UK gardeners showed that fewer than 29 per cent were buying peat-free growing media. What’s worse, over 38 percent of the public were not aware that most multi-purpose composts contain peat. What you can do When buying compost, grow bags and other similar products, choose peat-free varieties. If you can’t find the information on the bag, ask the person selling it! Good alternatives to peat include home-made compost, bark chip, leaf mould, well-rotted farmyard manure or soil conditioners based on waste wood. And always buy plants that have been grown in peat-free soil. These are a few facts to remember when you fill your containers with peat compost only to throw it on the compost heap a few months later! Even if you have a small garden you can easily make your own compost for potting and containers. Look at the RHS web site under composting for more information. Happy gardening.

Malvern Theatres News
The Woman in Black at Malvern Theatres The spine chilling novel from Susan Hill The Woman in Black, now a major motion picture and specially adapted for stage comes to Malvern Theatres on Mon 13 to Sat 18 May. Proud and solitary, Eel Marsh House surveys the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the house’s sole inhabitant, unaware of the tragic secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. It is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold. This feeling is deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black – and her terrible purpose.

AGM and Talk
Monday 22 April, 7.30pm, Colwall Village Hall The initial part of the public meeting of the Colwall Village Society will comprise the AGM. Afterwards, there will be a talk by Dr Janet Cooper on the Victoria County History (VCH) of Eastnor. The Herefordshire VCH Trust was founded in 1998 to support the writing of a history of the County as part of the national series on the Counties of England. Work started in 2005 with two paperbacks on Ledbury, as part of the Heritage Lottery funded project ‘England’s Past for Everyone.’ Since that project ended in 2009 the Trust has been funding the collection of material on the neighbouring parishes of Eastnor and Bosbury. Janet Cooper has now
Dr Janet Cooper
Colwall Village Society
written a parish history of Eastnor which will be published as part of a new series of VCH parish histories. The VCH has always based its histories on original research, and work on Eastnor has involved studying literally hundreds of documents preserved in the County Record Office, Hereford Cathedral Library and the muniment room of Eastnor Castle. No parish history is ever straightforward, and Eastnor is no exception!
All are welcome. Non-members entrance fee £2.00 Tea & Coffee will be served before the meeting.
