Group
royal engineers Set up almost fifty years ago, the Association’s Malvern and District branch welcomes anybody who has served with the Royal Engineers, both past and present. The Branch Secretary Tony Webb tells us more. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Royal British Legion Club in Cradley and our members come from far and wide. We welcome people in from the Worcester area, from Hereford and Upton on Severn. We’re a small branch, but people make the effort to travel, not least to enjoy the buffet which is organised by one of our members! Every couple of months we also come together for a Sunday Lunch when members bring their friends and relations. We alternate this between Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Our local branch has been running since the 1980s and I’ve been a member for the past fourteen years. We’re affiliated to the South Wales group which is based in Monmouth. Each group has a Director which is usually a Commanding Officer, assisted by a Regimental Sergeant Major.
Our national headquarters is based in Chatham, where each year we hold a service. There’s an Annual General Meeting held in London followed by a dinner and three veterans weekends are held at Chilwell in Nottinghamshire, Minley in Hampshire and Chatham in Kent where a parade and a service is held at Rochester cathedral. REA Benevolence provides financial and other assistance for serving and former memebrs of the Corps as well as their families who are in need. We are also sometimes asked for a standard bearer to attend the funeral of a former sapper, something we’re only too happy to help with. We all have something in common, or as we say, ‘once a sapper, always a sapper’. Our local meetings take place on the first Tuesday of each month in Cradley at the Royal British Legion and new members are always welcome. To find out more about the Malvern and District Branch of the Royal Engineers Association, call (01905) 424970.

Feature
open gardens The residents of local villages are throwing open their gardens to visitors during June and July. It’s a chance to enjoy some of these gardens at their best while helping to raise money for local good causes. BOSBURY
CRADLEY
Saturday 10th June 11am until 6pm
17th and 18th June Noon until 5pm each day
Gardens will be open around the village which is surrounded by orchards and hop fields. Entry costs £6 per person - a map can be picked up at the church in the centre of the village from 10.30am onwards. The church will also be serving tea, cakes and other refreshments during the day and the pub will be open. There is free car parking in the village with easy walking to the village centre gardens. Proceeds from the day will be given to the church and St Michael’s Hospice. You can read a full list of participating gardens at www.st-michaels-hospice.org.uk
WEST MALVERN 15th and 16th July 1pm until 6pm each day One of the great features of West Malvern is the view. Perched high on the side of the hills, many of the gardens enjoy a glorious vista towards Herefordshire, or back towards the hills themselves. During the weekend you can pick up a map of participating gardens from the West of England Car Park along the West Malvern Road and programmes will be available from the venues themselves. The last event of this kind in West Malvern was four years ago and this is a perfect chance to see how skilfully some gardeners have used smaller spaces to great effect. Two venues will be serving refreshments each afternoon and money raised from the weekend will be donated to Malvern Special Families. You can read more by searching for West Malvern at www.opengardens.co.uk
18
There will be twelve gardens to visit, dotted around the village. They range from a tiny garden which is described as ‘absolutely splendid’ to one which is more than one acre, and from those that are formal to ones which are more cottage like and natural. Entry to the gardens is gained by buying a programme which costs £6. These can be bought on the day, or in advance from local businesses including Cradley Butchers, Blue Ginger Gallery and Crumpton Hill Farm Shop. Arts
Music, arts, community Calling all artists! West Malvern Social Club has a wall to display work from local artists – if you have something to show, they’d like to hear from you. The club’s Secretary Gordon Kirk tells us more. The West Malvern Social Club (WMSC) has been part of the West Malvern Road scene for a century and a half. It has moved with the times and is no longer a “social club” as generally understood, but is a community resource (in the form of a hall, with a stage and a bar) which can be used for community activities of many sorts. It still operates as a not-for-profit organisation with members. Membership has been opened up and now you can join for £5 for lifetime membership. Members can book the hall for parties and other events. Many of the current activities involve music. There is an open mic on Thursday evenings; there is a jam session on Sunday evenings; there are often musical events on Fridays or Saturdays. To sign up for the newsletter, visit our website.
We are reaching out to the fine arts community; the Artists’ Gallery enables an artist to show their work on the main wall of the club. Generally, an artist is given a month to show their work. Whilst the pictures are on show, the artist may offer the pictures for sale. The wall gives hanging space about 6.7m long and 1.5m high; that’s about 8 largish pictures or a dozen smaller ones. If you’d like to exhibit on the Artists’ Gallery, contact us via our web site. If you have other ideas for using the club for art-related activities, we’ll be pleased to hear from you. www.wmsc.org.uk

cherry orchard A new cherry orchard for Colwall? - where there’s a mill there’s a way! By Helen Stace Once upon a time, carters hauled flour along Old Church Road in Colwall from the village corn mill through a sea of springtime pink, as acre after acre of cherry orchards came into bloom. By 1904 the mill was disused and by the 1960s it and the cherry orchards were gone. The fields in which the corn mill stood still have some beautiful ancient oak, ash and field maple trees and a stunning little babbling brook snaking through their length. The brook is full of fish and is one of the few places in the village where you can still see kingfishers. Colwall Orchard Group now has a fantastic opportunity to buy the land and restore Lugg’s Mill to its former glory as a cherry orchard. We know how to put the orchard back, we’re quite good at that now, but we desperately need the funds to pull this off.
22
So, we just need to raise £40,000 by January next year! We are applying for grants from a variety of funders, but in these austere times it can be very challenging to raise money from these sources. Our hope is that within a few years a new generation of cherry and apple trees have grown and are dripping with blossom, while kingfishers swoop over the newly restored mill pond. If you want to help to save and restore a wonderful part of Colwall’s history, please think about giving us a donation. You can do this by sending a cheque to Colwall Orchard Group, c/c The Cottage, Chase Road, Upper Colwall WR13 6DJ or though the donate button on our website. A huge thanks to those who have done this already – we have already raised just over £7,500, so we are on the way towards our total – let’s see if we can make this fly! www.colwallorchardgroup.org

Well Being
walk a mile
By Kaspa Thompson The cat, Tsuki, was sitting at the top of a few low steps. She - like all my cats - hates walking on grass. She stretched out in my direction when she saw me looking at her, and started that purr which means come over here and stroke me. I gave her some fuss and then carried on my walk, noticing what was growing, which flower beds needed weeding and the places where I was sure I had planted things that hadn’t come up yet. I noticed a couple of tadpoles swimming up to the surface of our small pond. Recently they have been keeping out of sight down in the deep waters. I have watched them change from gelatinous frog spawn, to tiny tadpoles, to bigger ones and I hope that some of them make it to adulthood. It’s hard to imagine how all of these different creatures experience the world; impossible, perhaps. Naturalist Charles Foster tried to see through the eyes of animals by living in their world. To get closer to the experience of a badger he got right down to the forest floor, he dug a set to sleep in and emerged blindfolded, learning to navigate the world through scent and touch. Even then there is a gap: a badger brain is not a human brain. Sometimes it seems just as difficult to imagine how life is for other people, even though we are all animals of the same species. We are all born into particular families, into particular cultures and into particular countries, each with their own quirks and standards of normal behaviour. Some of what we are handed down is good and some of what we are handed down less so. We meet someone with different experiences to us and think, “How can they like that?” or “Why are they doing that?”. A gulf opens up between us. Misunderstandings can happen even in the most intimate of relationships. We fail to notice how important something is to our partner, or we each

This morning as I took my usual morning walk around the garden I heard a bird call that I didn’t recognise. I looked up and there was a female blackbird, with its mottled brown coat, sitting up high in the copper beech above me. It wasn’t singing the usual blackbird song. A warning call, I guessed, and turned around to see that one of my cats had followed me into the garden. happen to be prioritising different things and suddenly we are arguing or not speaking to each other at all. Human beings don’t tend to like real change and so when we come into conflict much of our response is often about trying to get out of the conflict whilst avoiding changing or doing anything differently: we tell each other off, or try to use rational thought to work things out, or we run to a distraction. Suddenly there is a real danger of the conflict escalating and things being worse for us and the other person. Empathy offers a way out of this situation. It’s amazing how really tuning in to what’s happening in the other person, and to what’s happening in us, can make a real difference. Can we name our own feelings, rather than just acting habitually? Can we tune into the feelings of the other person? What is it about them that we’ve not seen or heard that has got us into this mess? Is there something about our own experience we are missing out? We’ll never get 100% into someone else’s shoes. But really making an effort to get there, and to hear and see and feel more than we did before is an amazingly powerful and transformative practice. Empathy moves us towards understanding, reconnection and to working and living together more easily.

magine for a moment what it feels like to be a carpenter, tailor or mechanic in a developing country in Africa. You struggle to feed your family and are frustrated by the poor quality tools on sale in your local market. Imagine what a difference it makes to use a set of good quality tools which you could never normally dream of owning. There is a way for you to help solve this problem and it won’t cost you a penny! We all have old tools in our sheds, garages and lofts - broken, rusting or just no longer needed. Maybe they belonged to parents or grandparents and have huge sentimental value and you don’t just want to sell them or throw them away. We accept all sorts of tools - for carpentry, car mechanics, tailoring, gardening and building, as well as power tools and sewing machines. We are affiliated to Tools For Self Reliance, a charity which was established in 1979 and works with local groups in Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Zambia. They have a very interesting and informative website (www.tfsr. org) where you can see how the refurbished tools are used in Africa. Recipe
strawberry blondes Amazing to eat on their own or jazz things up with sliced fresh strawberries and lemon sorbet for a show stopping pud! Preheat the (fan) oven to 150 degrees C Grease and line a 23cm square baking tin Melt the chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl suspended over a pan of simmering water. In a separate bowl, beat together the sugar, eggs and vanilla then stir into the cooled chocolate mixture. Fold in the ground almonds than scrape into your prepared tin. Bake for 30/40 minutes, until the top has set but the middle is still gooey so that the batter sticks to an inserted skewer (they will continue cooking after removed from the oven).
Ingredients 225g White chocolate chopped 225g unsalted butter 200g golden caster sugar 3 medium free range eggs 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 175g ground almonds
Take the blondes out of the oven and allow to cool completely before turning out and slicing into thick squidgy slabs...
This recipe was kindly provided by Neil from The Nest near Ledbury, a Family Friendly Deli Cafe serving local and Artisan produce. You can find The Nest on the Hereford Road, a few miles outside Ledbury.

Legal advice
Keep it in the Family - by Jonathan Lewis The recent Supreme Court decision in the case of Llott v The Blue Cross and others was the final word in a ten year legal battle fought by the Claimant against the Executors of her late mother’s estate and demonstrates (albeit in an extreme form) what can happen when families fall out about money and take their grievances to Court. Mrs Llott (who is now in her fifties) had left home at 17 to live with her boyfriend causing a lifelong estrangement between mother and daughter. Mrs Llott subsequently married her boyfriend, they had children together and by the time of her mother’s death in 2004 the family was living in Housing Association accommodation on a limited income and with very modest savings. Mrs Llott’s mother had made it abundantly clear that she felt no moral or financial obligation towards her daughter and made no provision for her in her will. The mother’s estate was valued at just under £500,000. English law in general allows people to dispose of their assets after death however they wish although their freedom to do this is modified by the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. The legislation is quite complicated and strict time limits apply but Mrs Llott made a claim because “reasonable financial provision” had not been made for her maintenance. The District Judge in the County Court awarded Mrs Llott £50,000. Mrs Llott appealed that decision, the case then went to the High Court and subsequently the Court of Appeal, resulting in an award of £143,000 (to enable her to buy the house she lived in) and a further £20,000. The animal charities (the beneficiaries under the will) appealed to the Supreme Court which has now reinstated the original award of £50,000. The Court commented that the present law is rather unsatisfactory particularly when having to decide whether an adult child is deserving of reasonable maintenance and indicated that the higher courts should not allow appeals unless the original Judge had made an error in law. Almost always cases of this kind are settled by negotiation simply because the costs of litigating
can be disproportionate to the amounts being argued over but the Judgement does show that this is a developing area of law and potential Claimants or Defendants would probably benefit from early, expert legal advice. Jonathan Lewis has been a solicitor for nearly 30 years and can offer detailed advice on disputes over wills and property in a friendly and approachable manner. Jonathan offers a free no obligation consultation. For further information or to make an appointment please contact Jonathan on 01531 632226 or email enquiries@ormeandslade.co.uk

Gardening
green fingers It’s a busy time of year for Bridget at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, who has some useful advice for gardeners. I have just been over at the Malvern showground planting our permanent garden up for the RHS Malvern Spring Festival. We have been planting the garden up to three times a year for the past 30 years! Over this time the soil has transfomed from compacted stone to a lovely humus-rich free draining soil. It occurred to me, watching all the other gardeners young and old, that the proportion of time and energy we all spend on plants and the finished garden far exceeds the care we take preparing the soil. Adding artificial fertilisers and chemicals is not the solution to creating a healthy living soil. Before the advent of artificial fertilisers, generations of farmers and growers worked with nature and the seasons to put humus back into the soil that was taken out by the growing of crops. As an organic grower, certified by The Soil Association, growing plants without artificial fertilisers and chemicals is the only way I have been able to grow. Over the years the biodiversity of flora and fauna on the nursery has increased and the pest and disease problems have decreased. Just by adding a mulch to the surface of your garden a couple of times a year (no digging required!), you can provide humus for the myriad of amazing little creatures that make up the constituent of a healthy soil. These creatures such as worms, beetles, springtails, sowbugs, spiders, mites, centipedes, millipedes and ants all work away to create fertility, aeration and water solubility. Many of these bugs are also predators of garden pests and help keep your plants pest free. So let’s make soil sexy, get down with the beetles and feel the crumb!
Caves Folly Nurseries 42
Every gardener should have a compost bin and use the compost in the autumn to spread over the soil. If you have not got space for a compost bin buy some green waste from Malvern Recycling Centre (also known as The Tip!). It can be bought cheaply in bags and is an ideal mulch for borders and vegetable gardens in autumn and spring. Here are some jobs for the next couple of months: • Regularly hoe borders and the veg garden • Container plants need regular feeding with a seaweed liquid feed • Keep containers and and all newly planted shrubs, trees etc. watered in hot weather • Be vigilant and spot pests and diseases before they take hold. There are many biological controls that can be used for slugs and snails, leatherjackets, vine weevil or chafer grubs • Dead-head roses and other plants such as penstemon as it encourage new flowers • Keep tomatoes and other climbers such as beans tied up and pick fruit regularly • Keep sowing lettuce and salads to last through to the autumn Perhaps the best job of all is to sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labour, it doesn’t get any better than summer in the garden. ‘The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all.’ Wendell Berry American poet and environmentalist
