Editor’s message
Summer time! Putting this month’s magazine together has made me realise how lucky we are to live in this part of the world. There are community events in Cradley, Colwall, Ledbury and Wellington Heath, music at West Fest in West Malvern, choirs singing and sports activities. Geofest 2014 gives us the chance to learn more about the unique geology of the area (in case you weren’t aware, we live in a Geopark of international importance). And if you’ve never been to one before, Cradley hosts its yearly Musicathon while a Sewathon takes place in Colwall. So all in all, there will always be something going on every weekend this summer – let’s hope for some good weather to enjoy it all! Have a great June & July!

Ale House Festival Colwall’s medieval Ale House becomes the social hub of the village at the end of June. The week long Ale House Festival begins at 11am on Saturday 21st June with lots of events as well as a Food and Drink Fair. There are many more events through the week including a beer and curry cycle ride, treasure hunt and An Evening with Old Rustic, as local farmer John Bishop regales an audience with stories of country life. The Festival concludes with a picnic and concert on Saturday 28th June. ‘The enthusiasm for the Festival has been infectious and the response from individuals, organisations and businesses who want to be involved has been absolutely amazing’ says Phil. ‘We really do have a lot of creativity, quality and generosity to celebrate.’
The day begins with a Classic Car Cavalcade, leaving the Wyche Innovation Centre at 10.45am and driving down through Colwall before arriving at the Ale House where the cars will be on display throughout the day. At the event, there’s the chance to have a go at bell ringing, Nordic Walking, craft activities as well as archery and the opportunity to launch a trebuchet, a medieval catapult. ‘Children will love the many activities on offer’ says Phil Hitchen who’s Chair of the Festival. ‘There’s a workshop with the brilliant book illustrator Simon Morse and lots of family friendly activities and even sheep racing!’ There’s also an art exhibition and refreshments on offer including teas, coffee, ice creams and a village pig roast by local butchers Wallers. Alongside all the activities is another major attraction on the first Saturday: The Ale House Food and Drink Festival brings together many local producers of food and drink. ‘This is a chance to sample and buy some of the best beer, cider and food you’ll find anywhere’ says Phil Hitchen. ‘As well as many stalls selling everything from chutney and jams to fudge, there are local meat producers, wonderful bread as well as locally brewed beer, cider and even local wine.’

Entry to the Festival Day including the Food and Drink Fair on June 21st is £2.50 for adults and free for children. If you buy a programme from Colwall stores you gain entry for one adult. Old Court Nurseries Long famed for its amazing autumn colour, The Picton Garden in Colwall is about to undergo a transformation. Parts of the garden are being re-designed with shrubs and plants giving winter colour, and large numbers of bulbs are being planted to bring early spring colour. The work is being completed by Helen Picton with her fiancé Ross Barbour. ‘Bringing new ideas into this garden is the chance of a lifetime’, says Ross. ‘We’ve cleared older herbaceous perennials and once we’re ready then carpets of springtime colour will be provided by snowdrops, iris, winter aconites and narcissi.’ The garden was laid out by Helen’s father Paul and holds the Plant Heritage National Collection of Autumn Flowering Asters. With over 400 different varieties of Michaelmas Daisies, it really is a national treasure, and Ross is being careful to develop the garden with sensitivity. ‘The emphasis has been on autumn, but there is so much more to appreciate here at other times of the year.’ Until recently Ross was the Head Gardener at Ragley
Hall and he’s also worked on large Scottish estates. He’s equally at home working in much smaller spaces and his expertise with alpine plants is being put to use with the expansion of a rockery area at the entrance to the Nurseries. Together, Ross and Helen are starting Old Court Garden Design and Consultancy. ‘We offer a range of services from full garden design and maintenance to advice on planting, alpines, water features and wildlife gardening’ says Ross. ‘Our approach to garden design is plant-led’ continues Helen, ‘and our combined experience gives us a wealth of knowledge to share with clients.’ Helen and Ross met when he came to Old Court Nurseries for advice on Asters. After that chance meeting he is staying on to make his life here. Their wedding is later this summer before they settle down to married life, working side by side. The first Spring opening of The Picton Garden takes place next year. You can find out more about Ross and Helen’s Garden Design and Consultancy work by calling 07896 309494 or emailing oldcourtgdc@btinternet.com

Garden
Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget gives us some ideas for days out in gardens a little further afield.
www.cavesfolly.com 01684 540631 What a joy it is to be in the garden in summer. The heady scents of Lavender, Elderflower and Roses mixed with that smell of abundant vegetation. If only we could bottle it and bring it out in January! There are of course many maintenance jobs to do in the garden but try and sit back and enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Make time to visit some of the wonderful gardens we have around us and take pictures for inspiration on revamping your own borders. At Caves Folly we supply plants to a large number of National Trust properties which gives us a chance to view many of the gardens as they evolve through the seasons. Hidcote Manor is a true inspiration for plantaholics with a wide selection of habitats such as the rock garden, stream and bog garden, kitchen garden as well as the formal hedges and borders. Almost opposite Hidcote is Kiftsgate Court. This is a private garden famous for its collections of roses and is open throughout the summer. After a scrumptious lunch at Hidcote I usually work up
an appetite for a mouth watering cream tea at Kiftsgate! Hergest Croft at Kington in Herefordshire is my favourite garden. It is a delightful mix of trees and shrubs, many of which are rare and unusual. It is set in woodland with swathes of wild flowers and the backdrop of Hergest Ridge. There is also a kitchen garden and plants for sale which have been propagated and grown from trees on the estate. And I really should mention their great tea room serving delicious Bara Brith. Hergest is open daily from 12pm to 5.30pm until the start of November. Croft castle near Leominster is another National Trust property with acres of parkland to explore as well as a walled garden near the castle. It has a collection of ancient trees including spanish chestnut, whose seeds are reputed to have been originally plundered from the ships of the Spanish Armada. They are truly magical when seen at sunset in the winter. Have a great summer.

All About...
Ledbury Community Choir Ledbury Community Choir is preparing for its next concert, singing popular numbers from well known shows. The choir started in 1998 when John Masefield High School was granted Arts College Status and its aim is to encourage people of all ages to sing. Valerie Clark joined almost four years ago and is section-leader for the first altos.
How many members are there and when do you meet? In the late 1990s, there were approximately 30 people in the choir whereas today the number has reached 100! We are no longer able to use the school and so meet in the Ledbury Baptist Church where we have received a warm welcome. We meet on a Tuesday evening at 7.30pm- 9.30pm.
What level of musical proficiency do you need to become a member? The choir began with the purpose of inviting anyone keen to sing, to join in and have fun. We have kept to that policy and so welcome people of all ages and all singing abilities, the only criteria being that you sing in tune! If you can read music it is, of course, beneficial but not necessary. Singers must be prepared to work hard practising their voice-parts whilst at the same time enjoying themselves.
What do you enjoy about being in the choir? I enjoy the variety of songs that we practise for performance at concerts, that show variety and diversity. While it is always gratifying if the audiences are enthusiastic about our efforts, what I really appreciate is the camaraderie and the opportunity to make new friends whilst doing something that I really enjoy, namely singing and entertaining.
How often do you perform and what kinds of music do you sing? Last year, we gave four performances: a liturgical rendering in the spring (in a church), songs from the films in the summer (performed at the Rugby Club), folk songs in the autumn (this in the famous Burgage Hall), and a Christmas concert, the latter in the Market Theatre and depicting popular Number One Christmas hits. This shows
16
the diversity of our choice of songs. This year there are three concerts and proceeds go to worthy local charities. It may be of interest for people to know that we may also be booked to perform at weddings or christenings – anywhere that we’re wanted.
What’s your next performance? Our next concert is “The Sounds of Music” depicting songs from some of the well-known shows, this is at Ledbury Rugby Club on the Thursday 10th & Friday 11 July at 7.30pm. Tickets may be purchased by phoning Dee (01531 634105) or Tessa (01531 634630).The venue is arranged as a cabaret setting and focuses on a relaxing and entertaining evening.
If you’re interested in joining the choir, you can speak to Tessa on (01531) 634630 or Lynne on (01531) 636679. You can see more on the choir’s ledburycommunitychoir.co.uk

Village Event Pool Piece is due to be open for residents and visitors by the end of June and an official opening event is planned on Saturday 12th July. Final details are still being discussed but it is hoped the event will include a community picnic as well as music and an interactive drama event to engage both children and adults.
The alterations and improvements to Pool Piece have been many months in the making. The area situated just opposite the Farmers Arms pub was originally designated as a public open space and children’s play area. However the land was very steep and was often wet underfoot, making access very difficult. The nature of the steep slope made games very difficult and there was little access to seating.
wooden shelter has been built to provide shade and protection from inclement weather as well as an area for creative play.
As a result of a grant from Biffa Award, the slope was reshaped to provide a banked auditorium feature and an area of flat land for play, village games and activities. The site was also designed to enable activities such as fetes, outside drama and music productions, as well as picnics and somewhere for general seating and relaxation. A
Final details of the event on 12 July will be published at allaboutmalvernhills.com. You can read about Biffa Award and how it helps communities at biffa-award.org

West Malvern feature
West Malvern’s Castle Hunter A few times every year, Mike Salter slings on his rucksack and heads off on an adventure. Leaving his home in West Malvern, he heads off to far-flung corners of Britain or Ireland to track down and write about the largely forgotten buildings that make up so much of our history.
‘Its a labour of love’ says Mike. ‘I like to describe myself as a poor man’s playboy, travelling the country on foot or by bike, searching out the remains of ancient monuments!’ Starting more than 25 years ago with a book on the Castles and Moated Manor Houses of Shropshire, the collection of books written by Mike has grown to seventy titles, which are sold in shops and museums as well as online. Mike’s attention to detail, and in particular his plan drawings of sites has gained him a following of people who collect sets of his books. Sometimes his research even re-writes the history of an area’s ancient monuments. In 2003 Mike visited a castle in County Limerick called Coonagh. ‘Until that point everyone assumed this ruin was the remains of a tower house. As soon as I visited I realised it was much older than that and was in fact the remains of a Norman donjon, a keep. My finding was subsequently accepted and noted by academics.’ The high number of old buildings and ruins across the British Isles means there is no shortage of places for Mike to write about. ‘In County Mayo in Ireland I was the first person to research and record the details of many ancient buildings. These lesser known fragmentary buildings often lie in far flung locations and are fascinating, but many had previously never been fully written about.’
24
Mike’s latest book, All About The Morris, examines the many different types of morris dancing including the so-called Welsh Border Morris from the Counties of Herefordshire, Worcestershire & Shropshire. ‘I’ve been involved in morris dancing since the 1970s. Back then it was a male domain, since then women’s teams and mixed teams have appeared as well as different dance styles. The Welsh Border Morris has been rediscovered as well as Molly Dancing. This evolution has generally been a good thing, the Morris has to evolve in order to survive.’ What’s next? ‘I’m currently collecting material for a book on medieval bridges‘ says Mike. ‘Perhaps unsurprisingly, not a lot has been written on this subject’ he says with a wry smile, ‘but there’s quite a story behind them. Somebody needs to do this work of recording these monuments. There are buildings at risk everywhere and every one of them needs properly recording before they become a tumbling ruin.’
Mike has written seventy books covering castles, churches, ancient monuments as well as guides to walking trails across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. You can see more at follypublications.co.uk

Cradley feature
Cradley Fete & Musicathon If you enjoy singing, you really have to be in Cradley on 12th July for the village’s quite unique Musicathon. ‘Musicathon is a made up word!’ laughs Maggie Edgar, who then has trouble containing her chuckles when recalling the event in previous years.
‘Once we did a three day Musical Marathon, then a two day event, but over the years we’ve trimmed it down and this year we’ll have thirteen hours of continuous singing and performance in the church. Its always been a huge amount of fun with lots of laughter. In the past it was a bit of an endurance test but it was excellent fun and well supported by the village. The event brings in money for the church and village hall so this is a good way of raising funds while giving lots of enjoyment.’ The music begins when the fete gets underway, and people are encouraged to book a slot when they sing, play an instrument or perhaps read poetry. ‘If possible we’d like each participant to raise sponsorship of at least £10. If you’d like to take part please get in touch with us’ (the numbers are at the bottom of the page) While the music happens in the church, the fete takes place outside with more than 25 stalls offering something for everyone. ‘Oliver Dakers the Blacksmith will return again this year to demonstrate his craft’ says Maggie, ‘the Gravelly Hill Band and Morning Dew will be entertaining us. We have lots of activities for children, including children’s workshops and games. There will also be Sumo wrestling, a dog show, and races.’ Delicious food will be available throughout the day; coffee, tea and light lunches will be served in the Village Hall with Cream Teas from 3pm. A barbeque and bar will run throughout the day.
Back at the Musicathon, children from the village primary school will be performing, there will be music from a brass quartet called ‘Full Blast’ among other performers. Then its time for everybody to join in with singing The Sound of Music from scratch. Rehearsals take place in the Scout Hut from 3.30pm, and then, whether the singers are ready or not, it will be performed from 6pm in the church. ‘During the second half of this concert’ says Maggie, ‘we are very fortunate to have pianist Anne de Dadelsen perform with India George on violin and cello, with Raye Harvey on violin. Pimms and strawberries will be served before the concert and during the interval.’ The evening is rounded off with a late night sing along to the Mamma Mia film. ‘We’d like people to come dressed in costumes, the film will be shown on a big screen and you can sing your heart out!’
Cradley Fete takes place on Saturday 12th July from 11am at the church and village hall. If you’re interested in taking part in the Musicathon, contact Di Hames on (01886) 880647, Judi Creed Newton (01886) 880534 or Maggie Edgar on (01886) 880529

Interior Design
‘Furniture’ The statement chair or sofa is bang on trend this year. You have probably got a good quality, solid built old chair or sofa in your home. It’s tired, dull clawed by the cat, slept on by the dog or has too many party accidents on it! So upholstery is the answer, there are numerous ways of doing this. In principal to bring it bang up to date you need a modern fabric, a vibrant colour, interesting pattern or both. Take a look at the image above, for ideas. Don’t be afraid of mixing fabrics, one for the outer and a different one for the seats and back. Add some buttoning in the back cushions, a different coloured piping or fringe. Basically be adventurous. If you have a traditional three piece suite you can update it by using different but coordinating fabrics for each piece. The result will amaze you, your room will take on a completely different look.
The dream starts here...
From Concept...to Completion
Fabrics vary in quality. Make sure it’s upholstery weight and quality, ( check the rub count) make sure it’s Teflon coated or scotch guarded. Make sure you use a good upholsterer, there is usually a lead time from order of 6 to 8 weeks. You will be advised when the upholsterer views the piece whether it needs new seat or back cushions, or new springs or webbing etc. Listen to the expert don’t make the mistake of taking the cheapest option. You may live to regret it, upholstery is labour intensive so therefore carries a certain cost. Yes, I hear you say ‘I can buy a new one for that price‘. The answer is yes you can, but 9 time out of 10 it won’t be any where near the quality of what you already have. Most big furniture chains import from china, your old piece of furniture was probably made in Nottingham by skilled craftsman, so please remember this before you discard that old sofa, revival is the answer.
