Week 2 studio activities Activity: frame In groups of 3- 4 students to build a stable structure long Enough to bridge across a 1500mm gap, using only the 600mm x 100mm x 2mm piece of balsa and glue provided. The group had to coincide the availability of the materials with strong reinforcements so the structure would be able to support itself.
Frame designing Our group plan to use skeletal system as our main structural system because it can transport loads better than other structural system
Using one long beam to be arc-shaped so that the loads can transport from the top of arc to both ends of arc- shaped beam.
Because of the limitation of materials, we did not have enough wooden beams to build two long beams for the bottom of bridge but only one line was made, the structure was likely to shake in horizontal direction. Our group decide to use tapes to attach structure to make it stable.
And in the part of support beams, considering that they might fell down because of the heavy loads, we use a short wooden beams to attach every two of them as a three- legged structure which is a kind of simple fixed joint.
Comparison In comparison, the group at the left side built a tetrahedron frame as the base adding with pin joints. But because at the mid of base beam there is no support beam to transport loads to the ground, beams can be only supported by itself’s strength, it is likely to collapse at first at mid. The group at right side only used the most simple way to build bridge: making the beams thicker, which means the stability of bridge can only depend on wooden beams’ strength, I do dot think is an efficient way to use materials.
