Constructing environment Week 6 - logbook
The beam outside the building is called “I” beam which has the shape of letter I. This beam connects the building to the concrete column outside the building, which may provide extra force to help enstable the building by load path. And this is a contemporary building with concrete and steel reinforcement construction style, which is very strong and durable. Reasons for those materials to be used is to allow maximum supporting load with minimum space taken.
Appears the structure of the stairs is held up by the steel wires under tension. However the structure is actually held up steel down the bottom of the steps. The steel is galvanised to protect it and welded in the shop, for safety reasons. The beams are stabilized by steel ties connected with pin joints to use tension and maintain flexibility to the lower beans under the stairs.
South lawn car park is a underground parking space which is near Ballieu Library. Inside the car parking, there are certain big “column” which has the function of structural supports. And its special shape is because of the trees on the ground. So it holds the roots of trees as well.
Week 3 Glossary Moment: the tendency of a force to rotate an object to which it is applied . Retaining wall : structural encasement constructed to hold back soil. Water or other materials. Retaining walls are used to increase the amount of support. Pad footing: an isolated foundation that is square or rectangle on plan and used to distribute point loads such as columns. Strip footing: a foundation that is excavated and cast in long lengths, used to carry longitudinal load such as external walls. Slab on ground: a concrete slab that is supported by the ground beneath. Substructure: the parts of a building that are constructed below ground level or below that which will be the finished ground.
