Project Regeneration s we enjoy the last few weeks of Spring before the dreaded heat comes back with summer, we use this issue to reflect on the various regeneration projects that have revitalized older buildings and landscapes bringing them into the 21st Century without losing their original charm. The cape, including the Club Med surroundings located on the eastern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, was given the highest level of land protection because of its outstanding geological and botanical value. But in 2003 the project was closed and remained so until regeneration works where completed in 2009-10 and today it remains the Mediterranean coast’s biggest restoration project ever. See page 48. Another eye-catching project is that of Salwator Square in Kraków, Poland. The square is located in one of Krakow’s historical districts and badly needed to be brought back to life! Salwator district was based on the garden-city concept and remains one of the more pleasant places in Kraków. Page 38. On Page 12 we focus on the Shoreline Walk, a sequence of connected urban spaces, which form an important part of the reconstruction of Beirut city centre. The area suffered extensive physical and emotional damage during the civil war between 1975 and 1991 and this projects serves as a reminder of how far the city has come in terms of physically rebuilding. We also feature two new landscaping projects in China, as well as Oman. Enjoy the issue!

Eng. Ahmad Abdul Kareem pointed out that all newly opened parks are specially designed for families and free of entry charge. The public parks and horticulture department has exerted its maximum efforts to plant most suitable trees, bushes, shrubs and flowers inside and outside the parks. The parks are also provided with synthetic jogging tracks, solar powered illumination systems, comfortable playing and workout areas for kids and families in addition to the amenities such as toilets and cafeterias. ‘Number of public parks in the emirate of Dubai reached to 122 so far including residential and public parks. Different types of solar power systems are used in every park,’ he said.

Salah Amiri, the Assistant Director General for Public Health and Environmental Services of the Dubai Municipality, has inaugurated the first edition of Outdoor Design Build & Supply, the Middle East’s dedicated landscaping and exterior design trade show. Held last 25-27 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, the three-day event is hosted by Dubai Municipality, and has brought together more than 100 brands from around the globe involved in the creation of private and public outdoor areas. With GCC governments keen to step up their efforts to create more ‘green’ spaces across the region, coupled with a resurgent GCC construction sector – where the value of new awarded projects is forecast to grow by 33% in 2013 to reach US$64.5 billion – the timing is perfect for the landscape and garden sectors to capitalize on a steady flow of increased opportunities. Outdoor Design & Build and Supply’s organizers, Streamline Marketing Group, estimate that about 10% (US$6.4 billion) of the value of the new construction contractor awards expected in 2013 will feed into the landscaping and exterior design sector, with the dedicated show providing the perfect setting for organizations to meet with thousands of key decision makers. Thea Skelton, Project Director of Outdoor Design Build & Supply, said: “The GCC construction surge we are now witnessing means billions of dollars are being spent on new housing complexes, hotels and resorts, leisure parks, shopping malls and various government infrastructure projects. “There will subsequently be a secondary boom for the landscaping sector, with

uring the war, a vast rubbish mountain emerged from the daily tipping of waste into the Mediterranean. The city had once prided itself on its beautiful rocky shoreline Corniche, lined with avenues of palms and cafĂŠs with views towards distant horizons. Guided by a new master plan, areas of the city have been preserved, others demolished, whilst the remediated landfill is set to become a

vast new district projecting out into the sea. Rather than leave the old coastline land locked and redundant, it was decided to create a leisurely pedestrian route that straddled the boundary and the differences between the old and new cities. ZEYTOUNEH SQUARE is a key link to the surrounding city. Terraces provide an informal amphitheatre for concerts, festivals and films. The surface of the

square extends across the roads to the surrounding buildings in a unifying gesture. The paving patterns are inspired by the black and white patterning in traditional Lebanese architecture. Bold stripes change like contours with the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s topography creating a fractal landscape as the contrasting colours interact with the terraces. The square was officially opened to the public in August 2011 by Solidere.

It is located between memories of the past and hopes for the future, between activities that made a connection to an organic coastline, influenced by the rhythms of the natural world, to a new contemporary landscape that alludes to and reveals those past memories and events, whilst helping shape the new character and dynamism of

a city shared by a people of many faiths and cultural influences. ALL SAINTS SQUARE connects the new Corniche and Marina. Before the war, the church occupied a headland surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, a space with a sense of calm and exposure. The design recreates a sheltered, intimate space enclosed by soft green textured walls and lowered to the original ground level adjacent to the church whilst views are channelled upwards towards the sky.

The SHORELINE GARDENS is the site of the historic Avenue des Français, Beirut’s first coastal promenade or Corniche. The design is a new interpretation, and inspired by the elegance of the sea wall, will provide a contemporary promenade. A long linear water feature and pergola unite the space creating water movement over an undulating surface and dappled shade to sit and relax. SANTIYEH GARDENS is inspired by the Middle Eastern Paradise Garden and will be a sensual, sensory refuge. The site occupies the position of an ancient cemetery and as a consequence required a calm, quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The theme of ‘Welling Up’ describes a release of emotion that is expressed in the design of the water features and benches.

Nishrin Kothambawala Can you give us a brief about your educational background and your experience in the GCC area? My family has been based in Bahrain for the past four generations. I completed my education as a horticulture graduate and a diploma holder in Landscape Architecture from Pune University, India. I have built my career in the field of Landscaping over the past 15 years by doing challenging work in India, China and now, since the past 8 years, in Bahrain. I started as a team leader at the Bahrain International Golf Course CompanyLandscape department where I was instrumental in setting up the entire department and had a key role in

designing the Royal Country Club roof top gardens and restaurants. I have also worked as a support designer for Colin Montgomerie. who designed the Royal Golf Course. Three years ago, I decided to set up my own firm - Raj Landscaping. What inspired you to become a landscape architect? I have always been fond of contemplating and visualizing creativity around me since childhood. As Confucius said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Love your job and you will never have to work a day in your lifeâ&#x20AC;?. So I decided, what better field, to explore my creativity and exploit my

love for nature than Landscape architecture. This is a highly creative profession and my strong passion for nature, keeps me inspired to raise our living standards. When did RAJ Landscaping first set up the business? Raj Landscaping was first set up in March 2009. How has the business expanded since its inception? We initially started as a Landscape design firm and in no time expanded into installing and maintaining the landscaped areas. Now, we are a creative team of

architects, horticulturists and supervisors along with skilled technicians, masons, gardeners, electricians and irrigation experts. We provide a wide range of services like indoor and outdoor Landscape design, installation and maintenance, terrace gardens, swimming pools and spaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. We specialize in theme-based gardens, green rooftops and vertical landscaping. Our designs are based on effective water conservation. We realize the value of innovation, so we have set up a research center for developing Green Walls and performing experiments pertaining to the field. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also expanding our presence in Middle East with the opening of a branch in Kuwait.

Although, our team is well versed in vertical landscaping, we had a very narrow time frame to complete it. What is your dream project? My dream project would be designing the interior and exterior landscape for a grand palace where there is no limitation on my imagination.

What is your design philosophy? My design philosophy is derived from having a distinctive approach of implementing a landscape that responds to the environment, its history, and the architectural structures it confines while at the same time, meets the needs of its owners. What has been your favorite project and why? I am passionate about every single project that I have been involved with, as Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve gained knowledge from each. Recently however, I really enjoyed developing and installing vertical live paspalum grass walls at Regency Intercontinental Hotel, Bahrain. Tell us about your most challenging project and why? Vertical landscape is indeed a fresh concept here and recently we have seen a significant rise in its demand. However, only appropriate knowledge about this

As a women in a male dominated profession, what has been your experience working in this field in the Middle East? Many women prefer not to venture into this field due to its high demand for successfully coordinating with various agencies, being on site at any hour despite harsh climatic conditions and meeting strict time frames. Having said that, I have always received enormous respect as a women working in the Middle East. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a wonderful and a welcoming place to work for any aspiring talent. Do you think that the international standards for the landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they easily be applied when executing projects? I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think international standards for landscaping are too rigid or unrealistic as they are based on all the vital aspects of landscaping and can only benefit our profession. And if followed appropriately, chances of any failures are reduced significantly. The problems arise when people try to cut corners or use inexperienced personnel.

How do you cope with having so many projects going on at once? Efficient management and a very cooperative and skilled team really aid my job and thereby our clients remain happy and satisfied with our quality of work and time management. Who are your major clients and what major projects have you been involved with on their behalf? Our major clients are number of Hotels & resorts that include Regency Inter Continental & Ritz Carlton, public gardens & schools, private villa owners at Riffa Views, Durrat Al Bahrain & across Bahrain. We have also been involved in government projects. What advise can you give to other women aspiring to become a landscape architect? I personally believe women have great aesthetic and artistic sagacity. They are more successful in adding a softer touch to an element with a high sense of understanding. So I would advice women to come forward and pursue this profession if you have a passion for it. My guidance to all aspiring women Landscape architects is to always believe in yourself. Remain strong and never give up. Keep proceeding with dedication & hard work, and you will certainly overcome all the challenges in your way and achieve much more than you have dreamt of.

Salwator Square This area is located in one of Krakow’s historical districts, though not directly in the city center. This relaxed neighbourhood needed an eye-catching space that would reflect it’s original charm. Salwator district was based on the garden-city concept and is one of the more pleasant places in Kraków. Between old, historic buildings public space was a little bit neglected. The designers organized the space in a simple way, creating a modern square whilst referring to the history of the surroundings.

hough the design is in a public space, the idea and finances came from a private investor. The neighboring hotel’s owner wanted to sponsor the space beautification project, which, in addition to its aesthetic function, would organize vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and would be the advertisement for the hotel at the same time. The project was also important for local community as a central square, therefore, is not only a foreground for commercial and residential service, but it is also a junction of cycling and hiking routes, lying in the heart of the attractive area of the city. The local government contributed to the project

donating an allowance to the area to be reconstructed. It was not an easy task to design interesting, eye- catching space within just a few hundred square meters. The investor, in addition to resurfacing, wanted to equip the square with urban furniture and greenery. Central to creating this memorable elegant public space is using a variety of natural materials, combining textures and forms to produce the sublime. The team wanted to create a clear concept that would be compatible with the surrounding neighborhood. The Square background is the wall, built in the early twentieth century as a part of flood defenses system, covered, in this section, with vine creepers. Under the wall there are parking lots arranged, designated linear boundaries in the surface, distinguishing the different types of stone, which is continuing the composition of the street. This pattern is repeated in a square surface, so as to obtain a composition consistent with the street and pavements

surface, and to achieve the impression that the space is larger than it actually is. Within this symmetrically compatible space with its surrounding environment, an ‘island’ was created. This focal point featured a wooden elliptical-shaped platform, which was an easy way to blend the traditionally used stone and the overall linear pattern.

In the paving stones a hole was cut with an area of about 40 m2 for a terrace made of corrugated planks- Deck-Dry. On this tiny, wooden oval, they was an enclave created for pedestrians. As well as square benches, litter bins, bollards and bike racks in the Square to compliment the planted greenery. All elements used are minimalist in form,

yet modern, with the only exception being, the wooden benches. These organically designed benches are the strongest design element within the square. A major issue of this space was that it had served as an unofficial parking place. So they placed bars on the edge of the square to effectively prevent parking, which also serve as bicycles racks. Materials used in the project are all natural, so the square color is based on natural colours comprising of natural stones, porphyry predominantly with granite and warm shades of natural porphyries composed with a wooden surface and wooden benches. The other components of design are made of corten steel, which is contrasted with natural, white pebbles, matched with white, smooth trunks of the planted trees. Only two species were used, the easily adaptable birches and extensively growing miscanthus. Decorative grasses compliment the elliptical-shaped eyes in the stone surface. The simple white trunks of these delicate trees are contrasted vividly in the autumn, with the red discoloring leaves of the vine creeper growing on the wall. As the greenery was planted in the city center there was a need to use irrigation and aeration sets for the roots systems, along with the root directors.

ulin Palace is one of the foremost residential complexes within the Zhongbei district in Hangzhou located close to the Grand Canal in Eastern China. The approach was to create a memorable landscape that captures some of the essence of living in this magnificent city â&#x20AC;&#x201C; creating an oasis in the midst of the urban context. The memory of a visitor to this area is of lakes, gardens, stone, canals, bridges, silk, tea and many more. Within such a rich context many layers were created and applied at a diversity of scales.

such as walls, screens and lighting features can be seen in the images of the constructed work. The success of the outcome was the interpretation and integration of these features in the overall layout and design â&#x20AC;&#x201C; subtle yet memorable.

n 1961, Club Med was constructed on the eastern tip of the Iberian Peninsula in one of the windiest and most northern exposed corners of the nation. It was constructed as a private holiday village with 400 rooms that accommodated around 900 visitors in summer. Life at Club Med was primitive, and meant to foster a relationship with nature. The settlement project is considered to be one of the most notorious examples of modern movement settlement in the Mediterranean coast. With the rise of democracy and ecological conservation, Cap de Creus was declared a Natural Park

in 1998. The cape, including the Club Med surroundings, was given the highest level of land protection because of its outstanding geological and botanical value. In the summer of 2003 Club Med was permanently closed, and in 2005, the 200 ha of property was acquired by the Spanish Ministry of Environment.

Between 2008-10, Club Med was ‘deconstructed’, its ecological dynamics revived and a network of paths and viewpoints were ‘remade’ for its rediscovery, becoming the Mediterranean coast’s biggest restoration project ever. The work distills and enhances the consubstantial values of the site, the diversity of geological formations, the harshness and nakedness of the rock outcrops, the specialization of native vegetation, the wind and the sea magnificence. Five actions are contemplated in the restoration project: Approach The project is related to an important aspect of what landscape architecture is about, namely identifying, unveiling and eventually transforming a site, to fit with what is already there. Indeed, the project´s goal was not to build or un-build, a landscape but to conceive the conditions for visitors to experience. To do so, the process involved indepth site reconnaissance and precise on-site cartography making. During the 5 years process, including the 14 months of work, the designers walked more than 200km on site, took and studied more than 15,000 images, and received up to 50 specialists in different fields relating

gathered for drying on site, and those near the main pathway were buried in landfills. 2. The selective deconstruction of 430 buildings, equivalent of 1.2 ha of edification and 6ha of urbanization with innovative and respectful deconstructive techniques. A specific ‘Decalogue’ file was prescribed for each of the 25 structures to be removed at Club Med: pavements, buildings, paths, wood structures in various typologies. It followed a demolition test of 5 units to verify the proposed measurements, set standards and budget them. The end of deconstruction was the final removal of all traces of the basement, dust and cement which was done manually with an ‘archeological’ standard using mixed techniques. 3. The management & recycling of 100% of the 45.000 m3 of construction

waste. While the roof and walls were dismantled, crushed and transported outside the Natural Park for recycling as sub base, the basement, built out of local stone, once crushed was used on-site for landfills and as pavement. Glass, metal and prefabricated concrete beams were deposited in authorized dumps.

4. The ecosystem dynamics revival by remaking the original site’s topography and reestablishing runoffs and sediment exchanges between land and sea. This included massive earth modeling actions to re-construe the original creeks, the demolition of road embankments cutting off the natural run off, the recovery of the beach´s original cross section or the reconstruction of a bridge with a larger span to allow for sediment transport. More than 9.000 m3 of crushed local stone from the building basis were used on site to recreated volumes or the ‘remaking’ of the parking at the entrance following the outcrop landscape of the surroundings. Following the advice of a Botanist, almost no plantings were envisioned for the restoration in order not to pollute the native seeds bank. The stabilization of critical embankments were made with hydro seeding after an on-site seed recollecting campaign. One year after completion the percentage of ground coverage is close to 100%, mostly with native annuals.

Here the design of the experience is seen as being just as important as the restoration strategy. In that sense, the project’s approach is based on the narratives and interpretations put on the landscape by scientists, artists, fishermen, kids and are reinterpreted in a didactic playful way around 3 main interventions in the way to monumentalize the site: 5.1 A site responsive hierarchical path system reducing and reusing the existing road infrastructure and promoting circular routes. Traditionally fishermen had identified rock formations with animal names for their orientation, as Dalí did and kids still do. The project, proposing a game of perception, constructs a sort of ‘lecterns’ outlining the ‘animal-rocks’ silhouette. So, like in a road movie, sequence shots and still photographs alternate to unveil views and animal rocks, focus on the folds and forms chiselled by wind erosion, follow the water running off to sea or listen to the rocks breaking the waves.

Can you give us a brief about your educational background and your experience in the GCC area? After studying engineering I decided to enroll in an extended course in advanced construction skills. This is primarily where I got my grounding and unwavering interest in all things to do with efficiency of movement. I came to the UAE from London where I had managed a landscaping company for many years. I secured a position as senior project manager with Engineers Office (Office of his

We are in business approximately one year. However we are fortunate to have the services of several individuals in our team who have in excess of twenty-five years experience in the landscape sector.

How was the business expanded since its inception? At the moment we are focusing on contacting new people and making them aware of our services. The market still seems a little slow but there are definitely signs of improvement. We have negotiations ongoing for several larger projects and we expect these discussions to bear fruit. It is important for us to remember as we expand we must recruit the right individuals for the key positions. When we have the correct management personnel in

place then these people basically become extensions of oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self at site. When we take this approach to recruiting it will afford us unlimited potential for growth. How do you cope with having so many projects going on at once? I get a fantastic buzz from creating something beautiful. My absolute passion is landscaping. Therefore it does not seem like work and I enjoy my profession immensely. Another factor in answer to your question is employing, motivating and monitoring the right people. It is important to remember that any companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s number one resource is its employees. A happy and content workforce makes everything easier. What is the most frustrating aspect of your work? And the most rewarding one? The most frustrating thing I have found is too many people do not do as they say. I find it a

pointless exercise to make comments if one does not intend to carry out or execute the action. The most rewarding thing is when we complete a project walk away, look back and thinkingâ&#x20AC;Ś.yeah, we did that. In your opinion, what changes need to be adopted in the GCC landscaping industry to become on a par with the rest of the world? Without doubt my biggest gripe is workplace inefficiency in general along with the under utilization of machinery. Accountability for individual performance must be introduced along with assessment of personnel abilities at an early stage following their arrival. If they are not to the standard required they must be trained. This action would ensure improvement in quality and efficiency. Presently there is machinery being used in landscape construction in the GCC, which is totally unsuitable for purpose. However there is machinery available, which would greatly expedite landscape construction. I intend to introduce this machinery.

Do you think that the international standards for the landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they easily be applied when executing projects? I believe everyone should aspire to higher standards and be on a constant quest for improvement. I would not go as far as to say international standards can easily be applied due to the available workforce but we must persist. As someone who is well established within the industry, what do you see as the main challenges we face in the next 12 months? From a general point I can only see upside. Many things are beginning to happen and I am very excited about the future. From a personal point of view there is competition in the market from long established companies. This is why I wish to get the message across that we are bringing something completely different to the table. I intend to shake up the industry with my innovative ideas and change the way people think in the sector about landscape construction.

How will UTI Landscapes shake up the industry? I see UTIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential for growth in the future as substantial. As I mentioned earlier my interest is in efficiency of movement, my beliefs on machinery and my intention to deploy my knowledge to our workforce will make the difference between UTI and other companies. What I intend to bring to the market will be a potential game changer. Other companies will have to adapt to compete. We are presently working on many Villa projects, too numerous to mention. The larger projects, which we are now pursuing, are at a delicate stage in negotiations and I am not at liberty to discuss.

Sowwah Square is a signifi cant urban space located on the Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi and provides a green retreat at the centre of the new commercial hub.

he inspiration for the square was derived from the nature and culture inherent to the Arabian Peninsula: dunes, traditional irrigation systems (Falaj), oasis, Bedouin textiles and the popular use of formal clipped hedges in United Arab Emirates, drawing connections with the French baroque ch창teau gardens. This merging of ideas is represented in a contemporary responsive design created a sustainable, cool and protected micro climate for users and a dynamic kaleidoscope of planting and patterned paving on the ground and viewed from the surrounding towers. The structure of the square uses large constructed vegetated mounds that orchestrate outdoor rooms to shelter pedestrians from the Shamal, a strong north-westerly wind blowing over Persian Gulf and to provide intimate spaces amongst the towering buildings. Linking the mounds together, the decorative pattern like that of a traditional rug, weaves through the square. To soothe people from the heat, water features are incorporated into long stone benches that wrap the mounds, providing playful and

he design concept of landscape of the ground level is ‘Second Lobby’. As the space is a linear and narrow strip surrounding the building, the possibilities for the space itself to be used independently were fairly limited. So in order to maximize utilization of the subordinate space, the strip was defined as a ‘Podium’: a deck made with aluminum I-profiles and twelve ‘Shrub Bouquets’ located in those cutout spaces. The Bouquets are laid out as if they are flowing through the in-between space, and providing venues for relaxation, as well as a pedestrian pat. The Red Oak trees planted at the

fringe of the Podium not only give the structure for the whole space but also creates an atmosphere for the Main Lobby. Seen from within the 1st floor lobby, the magnificent trees stand as a backdrop of a stage most fit for various events hosted by SBS such as award ceremonies and parties, or filming locations for SBS production dramas. The three Bouquets, which give an optical illusion of penetrating the glass curtain wall, are planted with evergreens and help visually broaden the lobby. Nine out of twelve bouquets were planted with six Korean native species that in effect brings the change of seasons within the building by its ever-changing

flowers and blossoming fruits. Another critical issue in designing the ground level landscape was flood-resistance. Recently the city of Seoul have witnessed increasing damages in the buildings in the city due to localized downpour during summer, so new buildings have been set on a higher finished floor level to avoid flooding in buildings. Here, in order to keep the Podium and the interior lobby flushed, we designed a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Streamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; alongside the aluminum deck to function as a drainage and detention reservoir when raining, while keeping the FFL same. Aluminum was especially chosen as the material of the deck because it gives an illuminating effect to the

northern face of the building and provides sleek and simple spatiality. We brought in Koreaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world-class shipbuilding technology to fabricate the aluminum deck. Those aluminum I-profiles were originally used to build decks of ships, and here we adjusted the interval between the I-profiles and size and color of structural beams for a better walking experience and aesthetic quality. Along with the Podium, the Green Media Wall is installed at the secondary entrance. To maintain its beauty during winter when all the foliage has been gone, super mirrors were attached to the aluminum planters with seven different angles. Although there are several diverse

spatial elements in this narrow space on ground level, we tried to make them come together into one landscape by considering the harmony between the materials. In the atrium on the 10th floor, there is only a limited amount of sunshine, no natural rain or wind, and not enough soil depth for planting. Notwithstanding these conditions, we designed an ‘ interior forest’ to provide the workers and visitors a space which is both accessible and relaxing. First, we designed a mounding with slopes on four sides in order to secure soil depth from 200 to 1000mm while making it look like the slopes are naturally connected in a flow into the lounge beyond the glass curtain walls. Artificial air supply (one rotation per hour) and sophisticated drainage were designed for a sound growing condition. The leftover space after planting was paved for circulation and relaxation. The paths were intended to be as sinuous as possible so that people have more options of walking and resting. In terms of plant species, tropical plants were

We selected Nandina domestica, especially those that were grown in pots from seedlings so that they can survive the shallow soil depth here. For the floor, we wanted materials with a shiny and glittering surface since the space is quite dark, yet still comfortable for walking and easy for maintenance. Stainless pipes cut into 10cm length were laid out first on the mounding and soil mixture of clay, cement and black pigment were poured.
