“Using Subsurface Dripline has reduced the water consumption, and solving the water runoff issues”
Yanbu Royal Commission Saudi Arabia PROJECT OVERVIEW Yanbu City is located in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and is one of the biggest industrial cities in KSA. It is surrounded by the Red Sea and is about 350 kilometers north of second-largest city in KSA, Jeddah. Yanbu City is an ongoing residential development project that involves replacing old irrigation networks with Sub-surface driplines.
Eng. Saleh A. Al-Zahrani Director, Landscaping & Irrigation Dept. Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu
CHALLENGE Water conservation has been a primary focus for Yanbu Royal Commission. Irrigation water is being sourced from a desalination & tertiary plan located at the industrial zone at high cost; saving water used for irrigation was a significant challenge for the city management. Other main challenge was pedestrian safety & car accidents as a result of water runoff on the walk ways & roads caused by excessive windy conditions prevail most of the year. Vandalism in such large public parks was always a challenge for the long term maintenance contracts as well. SOLUTION Yanbu Royal Commission selected Rain Bird’s XFS Subsurface Dripline with Copper Shield™ Technology as a solution to high cost and inefficient use of water. In addition, using the XFS helped avoid vandalism and provided safer walkways & traffic by preventing wind drift causing water splashes on the walk-

ways and Highways. The XFS-09-12500 was installed in Yanbu’s public parks, road medians, and slope areas. More than 3000 rolls have been installed at Yanbu with hundreds of PESB-R valves & valve boxes with purple lids, and air relief valves and drain valve. We thank His Excellency Dr. Alaa Abdullah Nassif, the Executive President for Royal Commission at Yanbu, for his support and encouragement to utilize new Technology in the city.

News & Events Greenwalls are important elements in context of today’s urban life style. In urban centers, with increasing number of tall buildings, the ratio of wall surface area to roof area is much higher.
Greenwalls
Selected plants for the BiowallTM are grown in a greenhouse or nursery in the Bio pots. The Bio Pots are then shipped to a job site & installed on the Bio frame fitted into a structural wall, engineered to support the extra weight of the containers & wind loads. Supplemental watering is provided by a drip irrigation system from a potable water source; rainwater or waste water from air conditioners stored in a cistern or treated gray-water. Green walls & vertical gardens will improve micro-climate & acoustics, creating a more livable city that is cooler & quieter.
U
nattractive & barren walls of residential & commercial buildings, shopping Malls, industrial buildings & transportation structures heat up in the summer. Green Walls along with urban trees & planted rooftops reduce the heat island effect, provide cool ambient temperatures & protect building against deterioration caused by UV rays. Greenwalls also provide thermal insulation, noise control & air filtration as well as provide a green backdrop for shopping, dining & relaxation. It is important for landscape designers to provide right guidance & consultancy & to take care in the selection, design & installation of Greenwalls. Synergies with other building systems such as integrated

planters, drainage, water collection, gray-water treatment & indoor air quality is important. Designer should ensure proper maintenance for sustainable green wall systems as it requires more intensive maintenance including supply of nutrients to fertilize the plants, growing vertically. JKD HortiTech is opening a Dubai office shortly, which will provide a complete range of products & services in the design of large urban sites that often feature extensive & intensive green roofs as well as Green walls, roof top gardens & permeable landscapes. The patented BiowallTM is a vertical garden system where plants are actually planted, irrigated & grown in a modular system which is secured & integrated with a wall or structure.

News & Events There are few things as fun for children as playing in water. Running through spraying water, wiggling toes in a stream, and jumping under a big splash—not only does it provide relief from the summer heat, it also engages touch, sight and sound unlike any other type of play. Water texture, colour and the way light mingles with water all provide an opportunity to explore and help create an exciting water world that stimulates development and imagination.
I
n 1986, the founders of Waterplay® Solutions Corp. were inspired as they watched kids playing in a fountain. They envisioned the possibilities—bigger splashes, engaging characters, interactive games, and more fun. Today, after over 25 years manufacturing aquatic play equipment, Waterplay has over 3000 installations worldwide and continues to bring the joy of water to people and communities. During this time, the concept of aquatic play has evolved and the popularity of aquatic play pads has grown. An aquatic play pad is a zerodepth environment that incorporates exciting features designed to spray, splash and spill onto the surrounding area, and those playing
in it. Because the water immediately drains away, play pads have become an ideal choice for communities looking for a safe aquatic environment without the need for a lifeguard, or the operational costs associated with a traditional pool. With its full product line-up, Waterplay® Solutions Corp.can meet the needs of nearly every aquatic play space design, from large indoor and outdoor waterparks, to smaller

play pads in public parks, to installations in hotels and resorts.Spray cannons and largerthan-life dumping buckets, slides bursting with water, nature-inspired features for exploring minds, interactive play features that send musical notes dancing through the sound of splashing water… these are just some of the exciting products Waterplay® Solutions Corp. has to offer. Through a partnership with Bin Sabt Sports & Leisure LLC, Waterplay is ready to make a splash across the U.A.E. Started in 1984, Bin Sabt has built its brand around quality, trust and service, and is well-established in the sports and recreation industry, making Waterplay products a perfect complement to their existing product portfolio.
I www.landscape-me.com I January 2014
Mr. Rohit Anand, Managing Director of Bin Sabt Sports & Leisure LLC commented, “Aquatic play equipment works as a natural extension to our dry playground equipment range which has been installed in several parks, public community facilities, hospitality, education and residential sectors in the U.A.E. We have always prided in our association with companies who are industry leaders in their respective fields, and now we are honored to be associated with Waterplay Solutions Corp. Given the hot summers and beautiful outdoor spaces of the U.A.E., there is huge potential to add aquatic play spaces to parks and play areas, while providing a place to cool off.”
Outdoor play areas bring families and communities together, while encouraging kids to run and interact in a safe environment. This also supports the U.A.E. government’s commitment to active living and the focus on development of public parks. The private sector can also add value with Waterplay® Solutions Corp. Waterparks, hotels and resorts can choose from full-scale waterslides, modular slide activity centres and a variety of aquatic play features to create maximum fun for all ages, and as a result, increase revenue. Together with Bin Sabt Sports and Leisure LLC, Waterplay® Solutions Corp. is passionate about what we do and that passion comes through in the enthusiasm of our people and the quality of our products. If you can dream it, we can help you create it. Dream big, and make Waterplay® Solutions Corp. and Bin Sabt part of your project solution.

rake & Scull Qatar (DSI Qatar), a wholly owned subsidiary of Drake & Scull International PJSC (DSI), has won a mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) contract for an approximate value of QAR 400 million for the upcoming Mall of Qatar in the Al Rayyan district of Qatar. The win is the latest in a series of multi-million commercial and residential deals signed by the company in 2013. UrbanCon Trading and Development are the main contractors on this commercial development. Under the terms of the agreement, DSI Qatar will execute the installation of all incidental electromechanical works on the three-storey mall which will feature a hypermarket, a multiplex, five department stores and at least 20 restaurants. In addition to the car parking accommodating 7000 cars, the mall will also have its own metro station. DSI Qatar is scheduled to start works on site in Q1 2014 and the project is slated for completion in June 2015.
14
Qatar is witnessing an upsurge in project tenders and contracts awarded as there is larger construction spending geared towards achieving its ambitious infrastructure development plans to facilitate the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Given this increased government expenditure and DSI Qatar’s proven track record, the company is poised to secure more projects and significantly increase its market share. Karem Akawi, Area General Manager, Drake & Scull Qatar stated, “The Mall of Qatar is a very prestigious project award for DSI and will build upon the rich experience we have in Mega Retail projects. DSI Qatar’s MEP division is a market leader and is currently executing projects across District cooling, Hospitality and Residential sectors. ” “Our engineering expertise is one of the central pillars of our success and will continue to be a vital factor for driving growth in Qatar during the crucial years

leading up to the worldcup. We anticipate positive development in the rail sector as we have cemented strategic alliances with leading International Rail experts to address the challenges and needs of Qatar Rail.” “We also see untapped potential in the Water and Waste Water sectors and we are well placed to leverage our patented European technology through our German Subsidiary Passavant Roediger to lead the modernization of Qatar’s Infrastructure.” Earlier this year, Drake & Scull Qatar was awarded a QAR 304 million contract for a mixed-use real estate development project in Doha and a second residential project worth QAR 180 million. DSI Qatar has also been associated with several prestigious projects since the early 2006 such as the Four Seasons Hotel, the Qtel Tower and the Doha Land project and has a healthy backlog and a history of consistent profitability.

ubai has been chosen as the host of the World Expo in 2020. HOK was the lead designer for a team that developed the master plan for the Expo, which is expected to draw more than 25 million visitors from October 2020 through April 2021. Dubai’s selection – themed “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” – was announced Nov. 27 by representatives of the 167 Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) member nations. Selected over three cities in Brazil, Russia and Turkey, Dubai will become the first Middle Eastern city to host the event in its 160-year history.
“This win is a testament to the commitment of the UAE citizens to create a prosperous future for their country and region,” said Daniel Hajjar, HOK’s management principal in Dubai. “We are proud to have been the lead designer of the Expo site and to be associated with producing a winning entry for the UAE so that this great country can continue to boost its reputation on a global stage.” “Dubai’s win elevates its status as a global city with world-class infrastructure and highlights its commitment to sustainable energy,” added HOK President Bill Hellmuth, AIA. “This is a well-deserved honor for the UAE,” said Tim Gale, PPLI, FRSA, director of planning for HOK in London. “With its mixture of education, innovation and entertainment, the plan reflects the wonderful qualities of Dubai and the form and spirit of a World Expo.”

Equidistant from the centres of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the 1,082-acre (438-hectare) Expo site is located next to the new Al Maktoum International Airport and in close proximity to Jebel Ali Port, the third busiest port in the world.
The design features three separate pavilions symbolizing opportunity, sustainability and mobility, with “innovation pods” and “best
practice areas” in each thematic zone. These three zones emanate from a central plaza named the Al Wasl, the historic Arabic name for Dubai meaning “the connection.” Inspired by the layout of a traditional Arabic “souk,” or marketplace, the design places larger pavilions to the perimeter while clustering smaller exhibit spaces toward the center of the site. This creates a
smooth pedestrian flow while encouraging interaction among visitors.
The team planned the Expo site and infrastructure to create a new sustainable benchmark for events in the Middle East. At night, the fabric will be transformed into an illuminated display of lights and digital projections. The boulevards will be shaded by the iconic photovoltaic fabric structure. year will produce at least 75kg/m2 and that significantly higher yields can be achieved in a commercial set-up. The seawater cooling system supports production of high-quality vegetables throughout the Qatari summer, and reduces freshwater usage to less than half that of comparable greenhouses in the region.

• Solar and desalination technologies were successfully integrated as designed into the SFP system, indicating the technology interconnections will work at larger scale. Synergies with the greenhouse and evaporative hedges performed to provide wet-cooling efficiencies without cooling towers.

• The external evaporative hedges function as designed providing cooling of up to 10 degrees for agricultural crops and desert revegetation. Vegetable and grain crops grow outdoors throughout the year. Useful desert plants grow rapidly when cultivated with small quantities of water and nutrients.
The Sahara forest project Food production in Qatar The pilot operations have verified the viability of profitable large scale greenhouse production in Qatar. Production is possible all 12 months of the year. High quality and efficient production can be realized with half the fresh water usage than in comparable greenhouses. The proven production of the system creates business opportunities: • With 8 hectares of greenhouse production SFP will match the yearly import of cucumbers to Qatar • With 40 hectares of greenhouse production SFP will match the yearly import of tomatoes to Qatar
• The saltwater infrastructure makes possible many concept extensions. Salt was produced as the end product of the saltwater value chain in large evaporative ponds. Commercially interesting algae showed good tolerance to heat and high evaporation rates. Halophytes useful as fodder or bioenergy grew successfully on pure seawater through the summer, and innovative saltwater irrigation systems operated without clogging or corrosion. “The pilot has enabled us to confirm a model and build the experience necessary to scaling-up of such farming concept and would provide large scale partners with necessary data to test the commercial

viability of the concept”, says Pierre Herben, Chief Technology Officer of Yara International. “Good greenhouse performance and yields year-round, thriving outdoor crops and characterizations of the integrated Sahara Forest Project system confirm the robustness and suitability of the design for large-scale commercial operation in desert environments. This creates commercial opportunities for the near-term production of competitive products and enhanced profitability with future economies of scale”, says Joakim Hauge, CEO of The Sahara Forest Project.

• With 60 hectares of greenhouse production SFP will match the yearly import of cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, and aubergines to Qatar About The Sahara Forest Project The Sahara Forest Project is a new environmental solution to create revegetation and green jobs through profitable production of food, water, clean electricity and biomass in desert areas. Sahara Forest Project takes what we have a enough of to create what we need more of, using CO2, salt water, sunlight and arid areas, to produce energy, fresh water, vegetation and food.

he 2013 CHINA JINZHOU WORLD LANDSCAPE ART EXPOSITION incorporated 20 gardens that resulted from an international design competition in early 2011. Supported by the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) in association with Jinzhou City and Jcom China Co Ltd,
the Exposition, which opened to the public in May, presents the work of contemporary landscape architects from around the world. The new park created by the Expo covers an area of 176 hectares located in the northern half of West Haiping residential area and forms a permanent central park for the city.
The theme of the expo “landscape architecture and garden arts unite all peoples: world civilizations, world cultures come together in Jinzhou” encouraged all landscape architects to reflect their own cultural background in designing contemporary gardens within the expo site.

as boundary areas that define a central landscaped courtyard but always closed (e.g. Roman peristylum, Arab courtyard or monastery cloister). In Chinese gardens, however, these corridors escape beyond the enclosures to communicate with other areas such as pavilions or gardens. It is in these cases where some of the sense of
The design of OUT-IN-SIDE is to create a space with different cultural roots to those of the visitors who will engage with it in a variety of ways. The design seeks to incorporate common elements and expressions that have occurred throughout the history of Chinese and Spanish cultures. One of the elements shared by these two cultures has been the continued presence of covered corridors organizing and communicating the various spaces. In Spain these spaces have been traditionally treated
View along edge of walkway enclosure and protection starts to break down and a degree of permeability is introduced. This is a fundamental design feature of the OUT-IN-SIDE concept that reinterprets the traditional atrium. Here, the idea of opening and expanding an enclosed space in the form of a courtyard has been applied not only in the use of the site

itself but also on the form of the garden design. The courtyard abandons its closure, the quadrilateral and its opacity to become an open and transparent pentangle in which edges do not separate indoor from outdoor but functions as a transition between the two spaces. A skin of rusty reinforcing bars, which allow to views through it, helps to create a degree of privacy in certain small spaces that allow rest and contemplation through a series of continuous benches located throughout the site, using the material employed in the atrium structure: timber. Just one other material is used to complete this pentangle: slate stone for the floor. This grey/black strong texture generates high contrast with the golden sand of “albero, which serves as a canvas for the whole.

An organic series of small cylindershaped elements is randomly distributed across the site, creating benches, planters and pavilions in which to perform, transforming the garden into a place that is also suited for cultural events. Turning the story around, we could say that this imaginary of the design concept reflects the remains of a virtual Cloister, represented in its original quadrangle through a water sheet, which is another common element in Spanish and Chinese cultures. The water element is made walkable by a metal mesh that is flush with the water surface. This element adds a new texture and a new use linked to the concept of permeability and the possibility, recalling well-known passages of the Bible, to walk, in a nonmiraculous way, on water. View across entrance
The circular plots designated for the individual gardens are between 2 and 3 thousand square meters in area, defined by vegetation enclosing each one and providing a sense of separation. They function as clearings within the forest in a similar way as the “castros, which were pre-Roman hillforts. Castros are archaeological pieces of land-art that have survived over many centuries, forming part of a rich cultural heritage and demonstrating another way of building in Western Europe. These archaeological sites have been part of Eladio’s imaginary from an early age, revealing an involuntary artistic expression in the midst of nature linked to a past lost in time. Its texture, which is full of ancestral references, was chosen to create the interior garden of the cloister where, as in the Spanish mountains, it is integrated with nature, which after thousands of years, is trying to recover the space.

Karres en Brands drew up the urban development plan together with Meyer en Van Schooten. The basic principle is to create a clear and well-organised site layout while maintaining a landscaped appearance. The project consists of three parts: the Strip, the Field and the Central Park. The office buildings are located in the Strip while the accommodation and training facilities are situated in the Field area. The Strip and the Field are connected by the central park. The Strip consists of a series of office buildings running perpendicular to the main access road. Water as a historic means of defence is reintroduced in the form of a large moat around the buildings, creating a relationship with the nearby Kromme Rijn river. Seven gardens and a parade ground are situated between the buildings, each with their own character and layout. The Field on the other hand aims to create a relationship with the spatial structure of the adjacent University grounds. The scale and structure of the neighbouring site is taken up and continued. The Field consists of flagstone paths, lawns and trees. The central park area is the green heart of the urban development plan and brings the whole complex into balance.

ritish Landscape Architecture firm, Grant Associates completed the landscape design of the new living planet center and headquarters. Below they reflect on the main highlights of the design: The spirit of woodland The spirit of woodland is drawn in to the landscape design by setting the new building carefully on the site so that the retained existing mature trees, including Lime and Oaks, encircle it. New tree planting comprises native species such as Lime, Oak, Birch and Rowan with the native understorey including Holly, Yew, Elder, Hawthorn, Hazel and Privet. The planting of woodland ground flora including Snow Drop, Blue Bell, Wild Garlic and Primrose will create an impressive and sensuous spring flowering display.
WPC protects primeval forests. Our first objective was to develop the technology to create a composite wood superior to natural wood in order to combat the thoughtless lumbering of forest trees.

The enhanced woodland understorey planting reinforces the habitat link with the adjacent ancient woodland of Horsell Common and the Basingstoke canal wildlife corridor whilst the effect of the tree canopy surrounding the building at eye level ensures the views out of the building are predominantly of landscape. The bin stores and cycle shelters within the woodland edge also provide opportunities for new habitats. Climbing Ivy and Honey suckle effectively create living wall features that support a green roof of sedum and saxifrage species. Entrance level The entrance level introduces non-native species like Bamboo to reflect the global nature of WWF’s work. A restrained palette of ornamental grass and bulb planting complements the elegant lines of the building with flowering climbing plants such as Passion flower and Jasmine adding colour and scent to the railings.

Sustainable urban drainage system A new wetland habitat and pond has been created by the integrated sustainable urban drainage system that attenuates water collected from the building roof structure and paved areas. It is hoped that this landscape feature including native marginal aquatic and wetland planting will attract some of the 21 species of dragonfly found in the nearby site of special scientific interest of the Basingstoke canal.

Sylvie Saddik Administration and PR Manager of Miracle Garden
Please tell us about the Miracle Garden? The idea was to create a unique project in the region and an excellent tourist attraction with positive impact on environment. It’s a miracle in the desert, which offers people the opportunity to enjoy moments of natural beauty as well as a different environment and experience to enjoy. Is the Miracle Garden open all year round? The Miracle Garden will be operating during winter until June, weather permitting as long as it’s not too hot and humid. When did the project first open? Phase one was opened in February 14th 2013 until May 18th 2013, and the second season of Phase 1 opened in November 28th 2013 until June 2014.

N at u r a l B e a u t y Tell us about the range of flowers in the garden? We have many varieties of flowers including, Petunia, Marie gold, Canna, Zenia, calendula, gaillardia amongst others. What are the design differences for this year compared to last year? We have many new flowers structures and designs that have been added to phase one. For example: • Huge structures of Sunflowers. • Seven flower hearts, seven stars and huge stunning flowers made with 3D art design. • Seven Pyramids including a huge one with the UAE flag designed by Flowers. • Two Flower arch pathways shaded by hanging flower baskets adding a romantic vibe to the garden. • A flower falcon.
• Umbrella pathway. • Flower tunnel pathway. • Large lilium flower lamps. • Happy birthday corner made with 3D design; giving the visitors the opportunity to have a memorial day and photography in this special corner. • Five raised domes distributed in the middle of the garden, decorated by large colored flowers, which cane be used as seating areas. • Mushroom seats. • Flower huts, and flowers hearts zone. • A flower castle with stunning design. • Flower falls get together across two bridges combing in a flower river. • Ferrari zone, (it's a Ferrari car with driver decorated by flowers) • Flower apples structures. • Hearts pathway • Animals zone. • Gazebo zone. • Flower boats. • Flower tree structures. • Flower tents. • Water lakes and fountains. • Islamic arch design. What were the main challenges in this project? The biggest challenge was the climate and the high temperatures of the country when constructing and also now that the project is complete. How do you your company fulfill its commitments to water conservation? We have our landscape engineers maintaining the flowers based on their individual water needs so some get watered daily whiles others only every two days, this ensures there is no water wastage.
