t’s a well-known fact that the quality of public recreational spaces available, determines the quality of one’s life. In our dense cities, public spaces are more important than ever, especially with most of us working longer hours and spending copious amounts of time with our heads buried in our phones or tablets rather than looking up and interacting with people face to face during lunchtime or at weekends. In the UAE, although we have just lost a beautiful recreational space in Safa Park, Dubai due to the construction of the new canal project, considering we’re living in the desert we are blessed with numerous green parks with first class facilities. In other cities, such as Birmingham in the UK, it’s been over a century since they have had a new public park so one can imagine their excitement at the opening of the city’s Eastside Park back in 2013. On page 40 we take a look at the design brief for the park and how it was implemented by London based architects Patel Taylor. Keeping with the theme of public spaces, Sishane Park in Istanbul goes beyond the traditional notion of a public park and instead creates a triad of multi-disciplined recreational spaces that can accommodate cultural programs, as well as provide ample resting areas for visitors. News & Events Landscape 2020 Redefining the traditional conference concept, Landscape 2020 was a fresh new platform for the industry and presented a series of project briefings exclusively for an invitation-only audience. Three individual dedicated days for Government, Developers and Consultants meant that the quality of attendees was top notch, ranging from urban planners and architects to government contract officers. Some of the biggest developments discussed included Mohammed bin Rashid City, Dubai Parks & Resorts and Sustainable City which allowed the attendees and exhibitors to gain insight into the progress, planning and future tender opportunities within these projects.

he third annual edition of Outdoor Design & Build, hosted by Dubai Municipality, took place from the 13th -15th April 2015 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. With the logo and brand streamlined to reflect the growing needs of the region’s landscape and outdoor design sector, this year’s edition showcased over 200 brands catering to the entire spectrum of hard & soft landscape products and services. The main drivers behind the GCC’s growth in the creation of new public spaces are the many high profile, world class events that are due to be hosted in the region, including the FIFA World Cup 2022 (Qatar) and the World Expo Series 2020 (UAE). With new laws and regulations in place, consultants and developers are busy ensuring all of these upcoming projects include a minimum of 25% green and urban space in order to receive necessary planning permission. As result of and due to these new developments, the Outdoor Design & Build Show provides an ideal platform for the industry to network and showcase the latest innovations in the landscape sector.

Over 15 new product launches The exhibition attracted over 85 companies from 19 different countries around the globe. For the first time companies from Czech Republic, Slovenia, Poland and Portugal amongst others were represented and brought with them new products and innovations. The products on showcase ranged from stone technology, Wi-Fi enabled public furniture to sustainable building materials - proving that this is the region’s only dedicated, premier platform for the outdoor, design, construction and landscaping industry.

35% visitor growth from 2014 There was an increase of 35% in the visitor numbers from 2014, with over 4,074 visitors coming from the GCC, MENA, Asia, Europe and Australia. An increased number of key buyers were observed visiting from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman and were welcomed by local distributors who were looking to push their products into these burgeoning markets. Small and Medium Scale Enterprises For the second consecutive year at the show, Dubai SME helped promote upcoming small and medium sized enterprises across the UAE. Also supporting their participation were the Sheikh Khalifa Fund and Ruwad Establishment. New SME members had the opportunity for the first time ever to present their products to senior decision makers from the industry hence significantly improving their brand awareness. Members showcased a wide range of solutions including landscaping contracting, design, tensile structures, gypsum structures and interior/exterior designing among others.

ith new catastrophes we have had to deal with and new technologies that we as humans embrace, it is inevitable that designers and architects will put two and two together and reconsider the way things are done by thinking outside the proverbial box. When homo sapiens first decided to stop living in caves and started creating their own habitations, they had new forces to deal with. They had to quickly develop their creative problem solving skills to find solutions for the new issues they were facing when it came to building and the external environment. Back in our era, 250 government entities, developers, C- level architects and interior designers representing over 10 countries of the MENA region will be meeting at the summit, “Leaders in Architecture MENA 2015,” to discuss how resilience will ultimately affect the way we build and the future of our planet. Resilient design is the method to make buildings ultimately sustainable and make sure that they will be able to withstand the test of time and keep up with the world’s changes. It is defined by the Resilient Design Institute as “the intentional design of buildings, landscapes, communities, and regions in response to vulnerabilities to disaster and disruption of normal life”. This was the big word on everybody’s lips after the enormous devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy back in 2012. It’s all about evolving and doing things in a better way so that each metropolis adapts to its own external environment. We have to adapt to our current environmental situations as well as forecast for future conditions that that might affect our multi-million dollar structures and infra-structures. The biggest debate over the last few years has been global warming and the rise of the oceans. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS),

So how will this affect Dubai and the Middle East and what techniques can we employ to design buildings so that our grandchildren can enjoy and prosper from our efforts today? One simple but effective answer is the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston in the U.S. This Hospital was designed by Perkins + Will which was also awarded LEED Gold. What makes this hospital unique is, its important mechanicals are housed in the very top floor and this prevents any damage or power outages that might occur due to flooding or storm surges. In such an event the hospital will be able to stay powered and take care of its hundreds of patients who depend on its functionality. It is sometimes minor alterations like this that can be the difference between sink or swim, mortal or immortal. It’s survival of the fittest and the fittest will be designed resiliently. Leaders in Architecture MENA seeks to address issues that might hinder our progress as a society by forecasting foreseeable challenges and finding solutions to optimize our building and design methods.

Reinventing the vernacular:

einventing the Vernacular is an academic research project to raise awareness on the importance of the restoration of historical villages in the Kingdom. It is the first of a series of educational research projects across the Kingdom, which are headed by Anna Klingmann, Director of the Architecture Program at Dar Al Hekma University in Jeddah. What began with a passionate interest in the unique cultural landscape of Asir is now a broader research initiative at the intersection of art, architecture, science and education. The project’s mission is to provide effective strategies to bring the Kingdom’s important architectural heritage into the future by reclaiming abandoned historical villages with advanced sustainable technologies.

Bridging the past with the future of the Kingdom renowned fashion designer, Yahya Al Bishri and light projections from Norwegian video artist, Anne Senstad. Other projections included time lapse videos of artwork such as ‘A Tribute to Fatmah Abu Gahas’ by internationally recognized artist Hend Al Mansour. The event also displayed local involvement from artists of Meftaha arts village in Abha and majilis painters – a genre of painting used in Asir. The event included a three-day symposium and was attended by many visitors who came

“Reinventing Asir” took place from 18 February to 5 March with a series of events held in Asir and in Jeddah to highlight and raise awareness of the diminishing heritage of Asir. The project was led by Anna Klingmann, Sima Refae and Lubna Yasin of Dar Al Hekma University and was supported by a student team of Samia Khan, Farah Aqrabawi, Nadine Lingawi and Lujain Badrig. The project involved a diverse team of researchers and artists who contributed to the cause of raising awareness and engagement of the regional cultures in Saudi Arabia and beyond Al Okas: The village was used as a canvas to project artwork from local artists such as Abdullah Hammas, Shadia Alem and Dana Awartani who are internationally known for their distinctive regionally based artwork. It also included an installation from world-

from the surrounding communities, from Abha, Riyadh and from Jeddah. International researchers and artists, members of the German and French consulates, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, Dar Al Hekma faculty and students were amongst the many who had made their way to the Al Okas. Talks by international scholars such as French ethnographer, Thierry Mauger were the highlights of the event. Thierry Mauger had spent 10 years researching the region while living in the city of Taif about 30 years ago. He fascinated the audience with his photography of the region’s unique culture. Other talks included works of researchers such as Andres Lepik of Germany who curated architectural exhibitions for the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Ulrike Freitag who is dedicated to the extensive

research into the culture of Arabia. Novelists Abdullah Thabit and Ahmad Abu Dahman also joined the talks to give the attendees wellrounded insights of the region’s culture. Jeddah: The event in Al Okas was followed by an exciting series of events in Jeddah that were held at the French consulate, the German consulate and Dar Al Hekma University. The French Consulate: Thierry Mauger gave a private talk at the French consulate and walked the audience through his discovery of the region 30 years ago. His photography exhibition of Asiri houses was open to the public. The German Consulate (Asir Then and Now): Anna Klingmann showcased her photography of historical Asiri houses taken within the last year to contrast Thierry Mauger’s earlier work and to create a comparison of Asir Then & Now bridging a 20 year span of change in the region, which was discussed between Anna Klingmann and Thierry Mauger during the night. HSDA Symposium (Reinvention of the Vernacular): A weeklong symposium at Dar Al Hekma held workshops and talks by international architects and researchers including Nicolas Jérôme Hünerwadel and Thomas Hildebrand – two architects from Switzerland, Hillary Scruggs, an architect and developer from Texas, Andreas Ruby, a curator and publisher from Germany, Wilfried Hackenbroich from Berlin and Thierry Mauger who presented a kaleidoscopic overview of vernacular architecture from around the world. The symposium concluded with a lively panel discussion, which was moderated by Anna Klingmann, to question the future and measures that could be taken to protect the rich heritage of Asir. The panel included Thierry Mauger, Yahya Al Bishri, Abdullah Hammas and Faris Thakfan who had come to join the discussion from Abha. Streetz, an architect with 38 years of experience in design, planning, architecture and project management, previously held leadership positions at several high profile architecture and engineering firms in the United States and United Arab Emirates. Daniel Hajjar, who helped establish HOK’s office in Dubai in 2000, has moved to a new role as managing principal in the firm’s London office. ubai’s Green Vision incorporating the latest advancemen ts in sustainable and innovative landscaping technology were showcased successfully at the 3rd Annual Middle East Smart Landscape Summit that concluded in Dubai last week. Held under the patronage of the Dubai Municipality and produced by global conference organizers Expotrade, the summit was attended by over 400 participants, and featured over 20 thought-provoking speeches, panel discussions and case studies, interspersed with networking sessions. The summit took place on 28-29 April at Sofitel Dubai The Palm Resort and Spa. The summit was inaugurated by Eng. Salah Amiri, Asst. Director General for Environmental & Public Health Services Sector, Dubai Municipality, in the presence of H.E. Jennes De Mol, Ambassador, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and H.E. Milos Perisic, Charge D’Affaires, Serbian Embassy. Eng. Salah Amiri delivered the inaugural address which emphasized the Dubai Municipality’s continued commitment towards a green Dubai in line with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision. Outlining the Dubai Municipality’s initiatives in this regard, he spoke on ensuring sustainability by introducing modern technologies in landscaping, irrigation and horticulture maintenance, and the implementation of a number of programs. He mentioned initiatives such as allocation of lands for green areas, provision of waste water for irrigation using special sewage treatment plants and irrigation networks, rehabilitation of horticulture companies, plant production by means of establishment of specialist nurseries and many more. Eng. Salah Amiri’s speech was followed by a Dubai Municipality presentation on implementing sustainability across Dubai parks. The presentation detailed the Dubai Municipality’s plans to construct public/neighborhood parks, community facilities and plazas by using solar energy to power all facilities in the parks, along with operation of the lighting elements and irrigation systems for trees and green spaces, in essence, zero energy parks. Projects such as the Al-Khazzan Park and the Palm Park in Al-Awir were also discussed at length, along with the use of green materials in parks.

A research-based approach to urban green spaces, biodiversity and people formed the crux of The University of Sheffield’s Dr. James Hitchmough’s session. Explaining how urban landscapes in arid regions present specific challenges in a sustainable world, Dr. Hitchmough stressed on the importance of embracing dry climates instead of eliminating them, by using strategies such as utilizing colourful annual and other desert ephemeral plants during the right seasons of the year. He also emphasized the use of research and took the audience through the nuances of biodiversity in the region.

The landscape design focuses on creating seamless outdoor spaces, which connect various buildings and merge with the ground floor interior. In addition to this focus, Cracknell is developing a flexible, predominantly hardscape solution that will be suitable for hosting ‘pop-up’ events. The hard landscape consists of large-sized precast concrete and granite pavers. The pavers are installed on the ‘central spine’, which connects all the buildings, and a mix of colour palettes and finishes in tones of light to dark grey, are used in both hard surface materials to create visual interest throughout the space. Clusters of date and washingtonia palms define the entrance to this central spine and flanking the length of the spine are a collection of Plumeria obtusa, Delonix regia and Terminalia mantaly. “Our mission with every project we undertake is to create living landscapes; places where people come together to work, play and live,” says Paul Cracknell, Executive Chairman. “Underpinning every design vision is a determination that what we create does indeed enhance the visual and active experience for people. The central plaza is inset with linear lighting and recessed lighting complements the ‘stepping structure’ used to cover the overhead carpark ramp, which creates tiered seating for events. To assist with accessibility, tactile paving and devices for those who are sightimpaired are incorporated throughout the space. In addition, the rich paving pattern includes strong lines that define various directions and, together with an array of bespoke furniture, further create a unique character to this landscape.

Actually I am the first female Arab landscape designer to participate in the Chelsea Flower Show, which is such an honour. It’s been my dream to be part of the world’s most

Zayed Grand Mosque, Alhambra, my UAE heritage and Arab culture. My main inspiration however is Sheikh Zayed’s Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The mosque made out of white marble is magnificent in every way. And yet it is simple and for me this reflects humbleness and yet it is rich in detail. My garden is based on a traditional

Islamic pattern set into a 45-degree angle that breaks away from the traditional courtyard quadrant. The design uses both modern and classic materials originating from countries touched by Arab culture and Islam. I have selected plants that reflect the spread of Islam and Arab culture and the growth of the early Arab empire through trade and along the Spice Route. The Beauty of Islam will be planted with species that reflect that broad heritage, including cardamom, fig, pomegranate, olive and coffee. Through the use of horticulture, poetry, scents and calligraphy, I will take the garden’s visitors on a contemporary, atmospheric voyage through Islamic and Arab culture. Al Barari recently revealed it’s latest phase, The Nest. How is this different to your other phases? Our latest residential development, The Nest is an exquisite collection of 99 villas that seamlessly combine world-class community living with the natural environment to offer a unique lifestyle, ideally suited to families. The villas are available in two styles that offer subtle differences in layout and lifestyle.

The homes are located adjacent to The Reserve, between the waterway and the Nad Al Sheba natural reserve. The Nest was inspired by the concept of family and home and features a refined collection of richly appointed four-bedroom residences echoing contemporary sophistication. Now we have a full spectrum of homes available, offering a choice for everyone from stunning apartments to spacious villas. The Nest bridges the gap between our different properties, offering well-appointed, more affordable lush living for families. Can you take us through the landscape design of this project? The villas have been designed in harmony with the surrounding landscapes. The Nest is a continuation of Al Barari’s landscaping ethos but with a new design to reflect the nature of the contemporary architecture. The Nest follows Al Barari’s ethos, to give residents boundless living – a continuous space between outside and inside. As with the other developments, the homes are surrounded by lush greenery. The Nest will have more interactive play areas for children as well as unique

landscapes that the address has become recognised for. Will each home have bespoke design features? Each home will comprise a luxuriant outdoor shower, barbeque area and sparkling infinity edge pool surrounded by landscaped lawns. The villas enjoy natural light, high ceilings and a sophisticated contemporary aesthetic using a colour palette of cream, grey and white. A wall of glass maintains a connection to the garden, whilst the chic design creates a sense of intimacy. Attention to detail is key, with luxury finishes such as Italian tiles and white quartz stone tops in the kitchen. Al Barari’s projects are known for respecting the environment and its sustainability, how did you apply this in The Nest’s gardens? The Nest in particular has solar panels on the roofs to reduce energy consumption costs throughout the home. It also shares the same sustainability initiatives as all our residential developments. A commitment to sustainability and responsible eco-conscious development means that Al Barari’s landscaping actively embraces good environmental

interview practices. We encourage the use of locally sourced planting and hardscape materials selected based on the latest Environmentally Sustainable Development (ESD) principles to create gardens. We focus on water, energy and waste minimization, and have in place sustainability systems including smart control irrigation, recycling and water treatment. Through the conservation and careful use of our resources, we use recycled water, which would otherwise be pumped into the ocean, to maintain our gardens. We select plants that provide year-round garden appeal, which means they can survive here both in winter and in summer. The team seeks and uses plants which can tolerate high levels of humidity, high/extreme temperatures (up to 48 degrees Celsius) and have a high tolerance to saline soil,

which is the norm in the UAE. We add compost, which we make from leftover materials at Al Barari, to the soil to improve its natural structure and water retaining capabilities. Mulching is used to reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation, which also helps to reduce the soil temperature. Sub-surface smart irrigation systems and larger water droplet sizes on our irrigation sprinklers (when required) are used to also reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation and to ensure plants are not over-watered. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next for Second Nature and Al Barari? Second Nature, which is now part of Green Works, created the lush botanic surrounds and themed gardens that Al Barari is renowned for and will continue to do so for phase 2 of Al Barari.

ishane Park is a bold shift in urban public space in central Istanbul. Located between the southwestern edge of Beyoglu and the highly trafficked Tarlibasi Road, its design intends to re-engage residents and visitors as an alternative public space for people to enjoy the cityscape. The design is in a dialogue with the sweeping views and flora of the Halic (Golden Horn), but also creates large pubic spaces for cultural

programing and contrasting intimate spaces for resting, enjoying the tree shade, playing and passing time with the community. The park is defined by three features: the silhouette walk, the decks and the outdoor room. To delight and comfort people, the features are in composition with the rich landscape unique to the Halic. Animating the public space is the park’s multi-modal services to the public and private transportation of Istanbul. Directly linking to the Sishane Metro, the pedestrian links to the bus/dolmus hubs and Kasimpasa, the 1,000 capacity car park and meeting point for other transportation tourist services will create Sishane Park’s dynamic movement of people buzzing through the city. Seasonal change, day to night, cultural events and the spontaneity of different persons enjoying the park amenities are intended to allow familiar, but changing experiences. Materials are selected to offer both familiar and alternative textures to the hardness of the city’s surfaces and to invite narratives into the design of the surface to engage people’s imagination of the city beyond.

Challenging to the design and clarity of circulation is the twelve-meter difference from the upper urban entry to the lower under-pass road edge. The design responded by creating terraces. The upper deck rises above the noise and visual pollution of the six lane road of Tarlabasi, the lower level creates a protected outdoor space connecting to the metro and the third allows for a flood of natural light and ventilation to enter the main entry parking level. The design teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aim is that Sishane Park becomes a Gateway to Galata and the other districts of Beyoglu as well as a link to the social life of Kasimpasa. It is envisioned as a place to experience the infamous spontaneous urban life of Galata, for people to have a strong connection to the rich natural environment of the city, while also offering a new formal and informal platform for cultural venues to program and engage the public in public space.

n the wake of an emerging premier medical educational system in Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz commissioned the design and construction of a new University of Health Sciences that consists of several campuses located in three separate cities across the Kingdom. The three locations include multiple colleges, student and faculty housing, sports and recreation centers.

Courtyard spaces framed by buildings minimize travel distances and heat gain. Light colors are associate with comfort and coolness. The landscape for the universities is designed as an adaptive living system. Exploiting its iconic visual aspects such as flatness and repetition serves to relax the body, inform the mind, and refresh the soul. Through the layering of the ground surfaces, one naturally conforms to accepted ways of seeing the landscape.

The University campuses signify a new interpretation of the Saudi Arabia landscape representing a stronger and more significant dialogue between the landscape and architecture within the Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia is home to one of the harshest deserts in the world and some of the hottest inhabited cities on Earth. The desert landscape is comprised of sun, intense heat, and very fine sand that seem to always be suspended in the air due to convection currents and shamal winds. The vast majority of land receives less than 100 millimeters of rain annually; half receives less than 40 millimeters. There is no topsoil and the sun is rarely diffused by clouds. Traditional knowledge embedded in the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vernacular determines that the buildingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; north-south orientations

The largest campus for the University of Health Sciences is located in Riyadh. The 212-hectare site is organized around two pedestrian promenades, making reference to the confluence of two streams that formed the original layout of the City. The promenades link and unify the campus, intersecting at the academic core. The main promenade consists of a heavily shaded pedestrian spine framed with date palms. Plazas and gardens extend out from the promenade, connecting it to housing, sports, and academic districts. The Wadi promenade connects the academic core to the existing and expanded hospital district through the introduction of tapestry of small wet and dry iconic desert gardens.

The 100-hectare campus at Jeddah is comprised of a new academic core consisting of eight buildings framing a central garden and grove. The eastern edge of the garden is the actual heart of the campus, serving as the student union plaza. A radial pattern of Date Palms articulates this open space. Several smaller gardens and fountains flank the main promenade, serving as individual forecourts. A central mosque, wrapped by palms and understory plantings, brings scale to the main gardens.

Located at the center’s golf club on Jeju Island, the subterranean project comes with views of the surrounding forest and natural landscape. More than half of the volume is dug beneath the ground level, with a large hole subtracted from the roof to filter light through to the spaces below. The hole or void forms a circular shape and represents CJ’s official logo and

and basketball matches. The sloping roof garden is also accessible from the ground, merging seamlessly with the parking to enable one to walk directly on top of it. The shape of the structure also functions as an amphitheater, allowing more than 300 people to sit on the integrated stone chairs and grass surface for outdoor performances. The most outstanding natural element to the CJ nine bridges forum is 40-foot tall trees, which surround Mt. Hallaâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; a rare sight for a building to be surrounded by trees that stand taller than the actual structure. Even if the site is exposed in the hillside of the mountain, the building is energy-efficiently nestled in the ground due to the volume of the building being submerged underground. he Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP) at Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) recently held an event entitled “Landscape as Infrastructure for Biodiversity and Food Security. Perspectives from Switzerland and Qatar”. In collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland in Qatar, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) the event included the inauguration of a Rooftop Permaculture Garden and the launch of an exhibition entitled “The Swiss Touch in Landscape Architecture”. Generously supported and sponsored by Al Sulaiteen Industrial Complex and Nakheel Landscapes, the event bought together academics, researchers, architecture and engineering students, landscape professionals, decision makers and NOGs and the general public. Attending the events were representatives from Ashghal, Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MMUP), and other industries and NGOs. The exhibition featured an overview of Swiss Landscape practices, landscape projects by Qatar University Students, and was accompanied by the installation of a Paradise Garden (Chahar Bagh) made with native species from Qatar (designed by Dr. Anna Grichting, with El

QU teaching assistant and researcher Sultana Al-Nabet presented her project “El Muna. People and Food in Qatar”. Switzerland and Qatar. Small States, Big Ideas. Landscape as Infrastructure Switzerland and Qatar are both considered as small states, but with far reaching global presence. With constrained territorial land, both countries have invested in producing a knowledge economy, and are committed to building sustainable societies and infrastructure. Just recently, a Solar Swiss airplane departed from Abu Dhabi on a trip around the world. Along the same lines, Qatar Airways pioneered by flying the first airplane with Natural gas-to-liquid (GTL) jet fuel which reduces carbon emissions. An emerging field and discipline that contributes to increasing the quality of life and improving urban ecosystems is Landscape. Landscape stands today at the centre of the political, aesthetic, social and ecological discourse of our time. With the emergence of new sustainability imperatives and the re-merging of disciplines in a more holistic approach, landscape is no longer considered as merely a decoration that beautifies a building or a city, but as a vital infrastructure that contributes to improving the health, vitality, and liveability of urban systems. It also contributes to improving resource efficiency, increasing food security and enhancing biodiversity. The Exhibition. Linking Landscapes The Swiss Touch in Landscape Architecture provides an insight into the extreme richness and variety of Swiss landscape architecture. It was exhibited alongside projects developed with students at Qatar University’s Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, showcasing projects that are socially, agriculturally and environmentally productive and to promote Landscape

Green Roofs, Biodiversity and Food Security In rapidly urbanizing environments and decreasing biodiversity counts, an important new terrain of Landscape is the Green Roof, which can participate in increased biodiversity, carbon capture and heat island reduction, as well as the production of food and the creation of social spaces. This event brought pioneering knowledge on Green Roofs developed at the Swiss University of Applied Science ZHAW in Switzerland and implemented in international projects such as the Olympic Games venues in London and the Urban Rooftop farm in Basel. The objective is to translate these experiences and lessons learned to Green Roofs Workshop with Architecture students and Gary Grant of Green Roof Consultancy.

It presents landscape architecture as a wide field and includes the work of architects such as Bernard Tschumi, whose deconstructivist project for the Parc de la Villete in Paris was a radical shift in landscape design, blending architecture, historical heritage and landscape in a social and cultural program. Edible Campus and Permaculture at Qatar University This event inaugurates a Green Roof being implemented at the Female College of Engineering at Qatar University as part of ongoing PhD and faculty research on Food Urbanism and Urban Permaculture in Drylands. This project builds on the Edible Boulevard that was designed by Undergraduate students in the same building, with a grant from Qatar Foundation, and

will be implemented in the future as a permaculture garden in continuation of the research project by Phd student Luzita Ball. It is an interdisciplinary project that will involve different fields inside and outside the disciplines of architecture, urbanism and landscape, and will contribute to the vision of creating an Edible Campus at Qatar University based on Urban Permaculture Principles. It brings together academics and practitioners, and also involves the expatriate workers and students at Qatar University, looking at ecological, social and economic values of integrated and holistic landscape practices and systems. Constructed Wetlands in Drylands An important project that was presented during the event was the Abu Nakhla Wetlands in Qatar, developed with Masters students and researchers in

Urban Planning and Design. It presents constructed wetlands that act as reservoirs for treated sewage effluent and accidently become hotspots of biodiversity and wildlife. Abu Nakhla reservoir is today threatened with disappearance due to planning decisions by the authorities. Through a landscape urbanism approach, the design looks at how good planning and design associated with ecological engineering – bioremediation and biodrainage – could provide ways to remediate certain negative aspects – such as seepage, odours and insects - while proposing infrastructures for leisure, research, food security and biodiversity, with the potential to become a jewel in Qatar’s landscapes. Developed with Friends of the Environment Qatar, the project demonstrates how landscape can engage different communities and NGOs in a collaborative process for the future.

Birmingham E cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first new park in 130 years

astside City Park, Birminghamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first new park in 130 years, is 3.2 hectares and doubles the amount of public realm in Birminghamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s City Centre. It is the focal point and catalyst for the Eastside regeneration area, creating a setting for the surrounding buildings and green route into the district from the city centre core. London architecture firm, Patel Taylor, working with Allain Provost, were appointed for full design services in 2006. The brief demanded an innovative, inviting and inspirational place that set the standard for the surrounding developments. The challenge was to find a way to initiate a piece of the city whilst still delivering a park, inspirational in its own right. Our initial approach was from an urban design point of view to ensure it was integral to the wider city context. We used the resulting principles to structure the design of the landscape. A strong structure for the composition of the park was essential because of its emerging context; the park needed to be able to stand alone, yet seamlessly integrate in design with existing, merging and future developments.

The park consists of a series of notional ‘rooms’ that are intended to be part of the city’s network of physically well-defined public spaces. The main spaces in the park are City Park Square (event space) and the eastern and western formal lawns, all linked by the spine path.

These open spaces are flanked by intensive edges defined by steel and precast concrete structures, groups evergreen and deciduous trees (each group is single species), and formal planting (also in single species blocks). Within these edges, there are numerous smaller scale

spaces that have specific characteristics and numerous thresholds. The range of scales allows the park to function on a civic and an individual level. A consistent palette of materials unify the spaces. The hard landscape comprises of white precast paving, steps and walls and granite paving. The precast emphasises the structure and composition of the park, and areas defined by the precast are infilled with hard or soft finishes. The steel work is painted a very dark green, except for the weathering steel used for the lighting fins and columns in City Park Square, which give that space a special characteristic. Prominent steel structures such as the pergolas, planting screens and the lighting fins all help to define the structure of the park. The pergolas straddle the spine path, providing rhythm and variation along its 370m length, with colour and seasonal variation from climbing wisteria. The planting screens support climbing plants are fixed to precast benches that are perpendicular to the north edge of the spine path. These offer small enclosures, with the planting offering seasonal, aromatic and colour variations.

The lighting fins are sculptural features on the terraces of the square. Their height, colour and leaf patterned cladding panels give them prominence as reference points within the park. They are internally lit from below, which highlights each one’s subtly different cladding. Doubling the provision of quality public open space for Birmingham will benefit millions of residents, visitors and workers over generations to come. It will continue the positive change in national perceptions of the City and raise its global profile in the national interest. It will dramatically increase visitor numbers to the area, increasing footfall between the retail core and Eastside, with the additional benefit of boosting the success of Millennium Point. The park provides a high quality, highly accessible, new 24-hour public realm, in a strategically important place at the hub of the City Centre’s existing network of squares and streets. Encouraging citizens to be more active in their daily lives, the health benefits for the community are significant. Walking and cycling to work, to the shops, to College and University will be easy, pleasant and safe; the park will provide new, local opportunities for people of all ages to jog, walk, cycle or play. The partnerships and consultations have been crucial in navigating the plans through the planning process and developing a scheme that was both viable and deliverable. The park design has been future proofed and accommodates the proposed High Speed 2 station - should it happen - while being flexible enough to adapt if the scheme does not progress to construction. The park has set the standard for the area, local people are adopting the spaces, and development and regeneration of the surrounding area is thriving.
