Parks and communal garden areas in residential neighbourhoods are a prominent theme in this issue – not only are they a sanctuary for relaxation, socialising, child’s-play and community hub but many act as the central green space for citizens, such as the Jaanila Country Park in Russia – we take a look at the project on page 40, led by KCAP Architects & Planners. Over on page 32, we go behind the designs for new playground areas at Alexandria Sporting Club in Egypt. Other garden projects can be found on page 36 – we reveal the plans behind Zhuhai City’s Mangrove Bay in the Guangdong Province, China which has a water garden theme. Also in the issue, we are happy to share findings on soil education and sustainable development, see page 16.

News & Events “A good training surface is also important when it comes to injury prevention too and I’m sure our new pitches will bring us many more benefits as the months progress”. Middle East and Eastern European clubs have strongly favoured SIS Pitches as their preferred installer for years and it was hardly surprising when Besiktas stepped up to become the first club to offer SISGRASS in the hyper-competitive Turkish league. As he watched the laser guided injector machine implant up to 240 MILLION fibres into an immaculately prepared surface, Training Facility Manager, Ilker Yilmaz was thrilled. The natural grass roots extend down and outwards, seeking out and eagerly attaching themselves to the strong, synthetic yarn. The resultant bond creates a surface that can stand THREE TIMES the hourly use of natural grass – heaven for coaches and ground staff.
H
ybrid pitch technology took a sudden leap with the unveiling of SISGRASS from UK pitch-provider SIS Pitches - and it didn't take long for the world's biggest sports clubs to take notice. It helps when your first customer is no less than the English FA's gleaming St. George's Park Centre of Excellence, where the cream of world football vie to use state of the art facilities. The tributes flowing from groundstaff at St. George's Park for this laser-guided pitch solution that can be laid in just ONE WEEK, prompted Chelsea FC to jump to the head of a long list of sports giants eager to exploit any new advantage in pitch design.
The pitch-provider..
SIS Pitches "The reaction has been amazing and we hope there will be an announcement shortly that will really get everyone's attention," says SIS Pitches CEO George Mullan. "For now we can only say it is big - it doesn't get any bigger!" For those unfamiliar with hybrid grass pitches, a simple explanation is tha they fill
The Blues stunning installation at their Cobham Training facility only served to ramp up SISGRASS interest further, as glowing reports from players and groundstaff filtered out. SIS Pitches has installed a further TWO pitches at Hull City Tigers FC in September. From there the top secret, patented injector machine was whisked to Besiktas in Turkey, where a training pitch and the main stadium will be treated to the sumptuous SISGRASS surface.

the gap between natural grass and artificial grass, by offering a tantalising combination of BOTH. By injecting synthetic yarns deep into the pitch sub-surface and then seeding with natural grass, the resulting synergy between both mediums produces a stunning pitch that is impossible to tell from all-natural.
So tough is SISGRASS that St. George’s Park head grounds man Alan Ferguson was confident enough to allow his prized SISGRASS pitch to be used recently as a training base for World Cup Rugby squads from Ireland and Argentina. Two weeks solid mauling and rucking from these giants didn’t even dent SISGRASS. “With SISGRASS, SIS Pitches has not only matched the competition I believe they have bettered it. The accuracy of the stitching was amazing and was also cleaner and neater. Not having to worry about major oil leaks was also a huge comfort. Being electric is a huge step forward,” says Mr Ferguson. “The time on site was also greatly reduced, the whole pitch being done extremely
quickly with just one machine. Its playability is excellent and all in all SISGRASS is a massive step forward, one which will benefit many clubs and training grounds in the months and years ahead.” Over at Hull City, manager Steve Bruce could only concur; “The new pitches are fantastic and we know how vitally important it is that we have a quality surface to train on, as we prepare for matches throughout the season. “This will play a key role in our plans to return this Club to the Premier League. A long summer of hard work has certainly been worth it and we’re confident that our new pitches will stand up to the rigours of a full season. Club captain and former Tottenham Hotspur favourite Michael Dawson enthuses; “We have really enjoyed training on the new pitches so far and as players we know that excellent surfaces like these, especially during the winter months, can help give us an advantage over the course of a season.
“Installation of SIS’s latest hybrid system pitch technology SISGRASS will be a touchstone of our team’s success. By having an all-year round mint condition surface for players - both on stadium and training pitch- it will give a consistent concentration for better play to all technical and field team. “Working with SIS Pitches has already feels like we have taken one step further towards to a new era of football play excitement,” he remarks. Early indications of tests on SISGRASS reveal that is it up to three times faster to install as outdated rivals – potentially enabling a pitch to be stitched during an international break. That’s not all. Samples show that natural grass roots extend deeper when combined with SISGRASS – 10ins compared to competitors’ 4ins – giving an even more robust, longer-lasting surface. Hybrid maintenance costs are no more than natural grass, but offer substantial savings in water to satisfy the environmental lobby. It is a compelling argument and good reason why SISGRASS injectors look set to become a permanent fixture in world sport.

f eight planets in the solar system the Earth ranks fifth in size after Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. It is also the third planet from the sun and is the only planet known to have an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface, and life. Over centuries overexploitation of the planet resources has shrunk it to an unprecedented level and there is a growing concern that over years it may not be able to provide sufficient food to meet human demand and to provide ecosystem services (food, feed, fiber, plants biodiversity, living organisms and habitats, raw material, nutrient cycling, water storage, buffering for pollutants, climate change mitigation and beautiful landscapes.) Rapid population growth, soil erosion, salinisation, contamination, urbanisation, overgrazing and biofuel production are the main factors to increase pressure on land resources. As a result, globally 33 percent of soils are degraded due to diversity of ailments, whereas 20 percent of irrigated lands are salinised to various degrees costing US$ 27.3 billion because of lost crop production. Current figure shows that the world is losing 2000 hectares of farm soil daily to salt-induced degradation, and worldwide over 24 billion tons of soils are lost on croplands to erosion every year, that is more than three tons of soil per person on the planet. Climate change impact will cause food and water shortages, increased displacement of people, increased
poverty and coastal flooding. The current data of global ecological footprint (EF) and Biocapacity (BC) reveals that humanity needs the regenerative capacity of 1.5 Earths to provide the ecological goods and services we use each year. Business as usual will lead us to have two earth planets by the year 2050 to feed current 7.3 billion and 2 billion extra mouths, but we have only one earth planet and no virtual earth to import. This shows that the capacity of the Earth resources sustainability for future is at risk, and, therefore its conservation is imperative, which requires the recognition of its importance to feed the current and growing population and ecosystem services. Internationally, there has been a growing movement calling for increased awareness about the importance of soils and the critical role they play in securing our food. Considering the importance of soils for providing food and other ecosystem services the 68th United Nations General Assembly has declared 2015 as International Year of Soils (IYS). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN) has been nominated to implement the IYS 2015, within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership and in collaboration with Governments and the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Dubai based International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) joined Global Soil Partnership (GSP) and The Intergovernmental Technical Panel on
Natural irrigation water reduction with the World´s most efficient Mineral Moisture Retaining Soil Additive. Successfully implemented and proven in the most challenging landscaping projects in the Gulf.

soil Soils (ITPS) that was established at the first Plenary Assembly of the Global Soil Partnership held at FAO Headquarters on 11 to 12 of June, 2013. Over the years ICBA has contributed to various activities of the GSP-ITPS. The IYS 2015 aims to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions. ICBA since inception in 1999 has been providing agriculture related education through various tools and developing skills and knowledge across different continents. One of the globally recognised tools for soil education is the Soil museum. Soil museums display and preserve the different soil structures, patterns, types and soil diversity and has been an effective tool used to promote knowledge about soil, its importance, and the role it plays. However, there are very few soil museums in the world, namely: the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, Soil Museum of Thailand, World Soil Museum-ISRIC Wageningen, Soil Museum of Vietnam, and recently China has taken initiative to house soil museum in Beijing. No soil museum exists in the GCC countries despite the huge soil losses and disruptions that the region has faced over the centuries due to the harsh climate. To fill this gap, the unique soil museum that will be soon launched at ICBA has a mandate to serve the community with
Soil education at outdoor exhibit linking soil health to urban landscaping information about the UAE soil resources to help address various issues related to agriculture, food security, desertification, environmental protection and national development. The soil museum will be a place where soil information seekers are able to access soil information and learn the values of soils and their conservation for sustainable soil services and environmental protection (all under one ceiling – a stop soil shopping). The soil museum will cover indoor and outdoor exhibits (educational landscape
design) and provide visitors with a unique learning experience about soils, their importance and sustainable uses. The soil education will be provided through different soil education modules that cater to the needs and demands of a diverse range of visitors from school children, to university students, researchers, professionals and scientists, environmentalists, professional contractors, land use planners, decision makers and policy developers. In addition, displays with interactive games, animations, and movies will be on site to engage students. Interactive applications will be available for students to download on their iPad and mobiles. In parallel, we will also pursue to establish an online virtual museum which will expand the educational benefits and reach more information seekers. We hope, with the opening of soil museum, the community will be benefitted and the youth (the managers of tomorrow) will understand the values of their soils, will have motives to conserve for food, ecosystem services and sustainable development for many years to come.

The multivalent potential of the urban landscape is embraced by drawing on these types of spaces to project a new prototype of civic space on a neglected infrastructural landscape where two urban

highways, the Beirut River, and multiple contrasting neighbourhoods intersect. After gaining independence in 1943, Lebanon saw thirty years of relative peace as a new republic before descending into a fifteen-year sectarian civil war that pit Christian against Muslim. In public and political life, these thirty ‘golden years’ are heavily romanticised, while the tumultuous civil war is often intentionally forgotten. Romanticising the past combined with a cynical approach to moving forward has resulted in both
a physical and cultural erosion of the public realm. This, in tandem with the continued political instability spawned by the civil war, has allowed areas of natural, cultural, and civic heritage to be co-opted by private luxury development, preventing them from serving as potential devices to foster social cohesion and civic identity. The unprecedented tabula rasa re-construction of Beirut’s central district by a private development company exemplifies this condition. In light of this paradigm, where the most

CiviC Realm likely spaces for civic identity are co-opted by private development, the method of my inquiry took two veins. One was about method, an inventory of designated and spontaneous public space types in Beirut, and the other involved site selection and a rationale for civic space in more unlikely places. The public space inventory reveals a diverse set of spatial types that are used as public, whether designated as such or not. As the inventory moved towards the informal and even unlikely spaces, the dominating adjacency or contextual interaction becomes infrastructure and they display increasingly unique forms of public manifestation. The peri-urban Beirut River, a seasonal river fed by snowmelt, is an ideal testing ground for this new idea of civic space. Opportunity lies in its ambiguous ownership, neglect, status as municipal boundary, infrastructural qualities, and tenuous identity as a natural feature. The

specific location for intervention is at the river’s most infrastructural and built-up condition. Spatially and aesthetically, the unlikeliness of the location for public space works in its favour as an intervention here is less likely to spawn gentrification, as would happen in more likely civic domains. With this framework, it was important that the tempting romantic and restorations approach to the channelised river be challenged. Present conditions must be confronted and the site must be accepted as an infrastructure. Socially and demographically speaking however, it is a likely place to foster civic cohesion as, though situated in the largely Christian eastern half of Beirut, the site is located within the most prominent Armenian neighbourhoods. Due to affordable rents, these neighbourhoods are becoming increasingly ethnically and religiously diverse due to urban migration of Shi’ite Muslims and the influx of refugees from surrounding countries. However, due to the resistance of the Armenian community to take sides during the civil war, their neighbourhoods are thought of as relatively neutral grounds for interaction compared to other more cloistered districts. The proposed design prototype responds to the evolving transformation of the Beirut River. In a transition from biophysical system to hydrologic and transportation infrastructure; from a seasonally flooding estuary with an ever changing course to

interview
Michael Mascarenhas CEO, Desert Group
Tell us about your background and experience in the GCC area? I am a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants with an MBA in Corporate Strategy, a Certified Internal Auditor and an Alumnus of Oxford. It has been my cross national, multi sectoral and diverse organizational exposure that has made me who I am. Adaptability, accepting change and risk as the norm while creating value is what my experience continues to be about. I thrive on expanseful operations given that my experience covers manufacturing, retail, construction, money remittance, banking, investments and private equity.

How do you see the future of the landscape industry in the GCC area? As community living and infrastructure development take center stage in the region, landscaping will form an integral part of such developments. Thus there will be growth in this sector. However whilst aesthetics and attractiveness will be critical, these projects will have to be designed and built keeping sustainability in mind. This includes new ways to bring water efficiency and native plants as foremost elements in landscaping designs and development. This will be the challenge.
What is the difference between the landscape industry here in the Middle East compare to the other countries? The regions arid climate is both a challenge and an opportunity. It’s the stewards of the landscaping industry that should provide unique solutions that exploits this opportunity while adding to the beauty of this region. Desert Group is the only company in the landscaping industry that has invested in a R&D hub that is researching native trees and shrubs together with ways to develop organic treatments for plant pest and diseases common to our particular region. We have already made
a dedicated native plant nursery. We have already made a difference through being pioneers in our industry and will continue to do so. What are the main challenges of doing business in the GCC countries? We should rather focus on the opportunity. The region is fast developing and the need for innovative business solutions is growing. This gives various business houses a chance to demonstrate its capability and meet new and growing consumer requirements. This goes for the landscaping industry as well. As the market matures and the consumers
demand higher quality products I see a far greater opportunity for professionally managed companies to get ahead. Do you think that the international standards for the landscaping industry are too rigid and unrealistic or can they easily be applied when executing projects? What may be good for another continent and region may not always be the best standard for this region. Standards will have to be developed taking into account the regions uniqueness. New methodologies to meet new standards around water conservation and sustainability will have

interview to be recognized. A horticultural body will need to be formed to help develop and promote locally relevant standards. Certain standards are relevant throughout the industry worldwide. Others are formed to suit regional requirements and climatic conditions. Who are your major clients and what major projects have you been involved with on their behalf? Desert Group has been one of the first landscaping companies in the region and
with a 26 year history we have unique client relationships designing and building landmark projects. Each of our clients is treasured. Our projects have extended from the residential to the commercial, from a hotel landscaping build to a football stadium pitch on which many a Gulf Cup has been played – as a group we thrive on delivering unique projects. That in fact defines the Desert Group. What is the most frustrating aspect of your work? And the most rewarding one? I am reminded of something I had once read “It’s not about being big but about

the fast getting ahead”. Hence, keeping the group nimble and focused on the market and customer, ensuring flexibility of market dynamics to seize opportunities and make change a driving force are some of the challenges that I do come across. Yet, I feel proud to say that my team has been quick to respond and now look at continuous adaptation. The anti-businessas-usual philosophy is now getting strongly embedded into the Desert Group ethos. A fascinating journey indeed. Never has Desert Group been more focused on driving change and impacting employee engagement, profitability, innovation and

customer needs. The synchronicity within various functions and group companies takes time and perseverance remains key. What do you see as the main challenges we face in the next 12 months. The main challenges are the widening gap between skilled resource needs and availability. Quite an immediate challenge is the way new and innovative ways will have to be looked at bringing human capital up to speed. The companies with a robust training function will be leading the market. What special memories and incidents would you like to share with landscape magazine reader? So here is the special moment. I was at our Wahat Al Sahraa Plant Nursery at Al Khawaneej with a high profile customer where we met with one of our differently abled team members. The customer asked him the names of certain plants and was promptly replied to with a plant name list in Latin. Well so here is the lesson – respect all, there is a skill in all of us, unique in many ways, and it’s left to us to discover that.

The concept comes from the agricultural system which has been molded and reinterpreted in a different way, in order to offer a functional public space well inserted into this territory. The design follows the division of cultivated fields that define the countryside between
town and river, while all the materials recall the main agricultural elements. As for slow mobility, “We decided to insert various walking and bike paths that could link the park with river park. Most of them are characterised by grass slopes which are partly covered by cor-

public park built in the heart of Sant’Anna District (Lucca) in 2006, is almost 3.5 hectars big and is part of the system of open spaces of the Serchio River Park. Since its creation, it has been possible to solve many of the problems of the neighborhood such as the creation of an entrance for the River Park from this part of town allowing citizens to reach it in a quicker and safer way. More over, the Parco Ovest has defined a real green urban area for all the resident people of Sant’Anna District, one of the biggest districts of Lucca. The main elements of the project evoke the countryside of Lucca and offer a comfortable urban area which is perfectly inserted in the surrounding landscape. “We wanted to give people the opportunity to pass their spare time in an harmonic space, to lay on the grass if they wanted to or to sit in the shade of

In that way it has been possible to create a coherent space with the already existing natural system. So trees guarantee the right amount of shade but on the other side they represent a mark of green architecture capable of enhancing the river park. More than 130 new trees have been inserted including Acer platanoides and Populus Alba.

he site is perfectly situated adjacent to the most beautiful river in Zhuhai, stretching from the first phase installment to the fourth and last phase installment. The landscape calls for a more tranquil and serene gardens to capture the true spirit of the brand Mangrove bay, this is attained by introducing a water garden theme. Different water characteristics
have played an instrumental part in each space in order to enhance the mood of a specific garden. Inviting cascading waters are introduced to captivate the viewers to lead them to the site, while reflecting waters are placed along spaces made to be intimate. Jetting water from bubbler fountains are installed to bring excitement along the focal spaces and rippling waters that sets the scene of relaxation in some gardens.
Zhuhai Citic Mangrove Bay not only achieves the perfect balance of function and aesthetics in design, but the development also boasts the ecological aspect in its conception. Going green is one of the many criteria that have been accomplished from the concept to construction.

Aside from the water garden theme, a sub-theme is also introduced that focuses mainly on the feature walls, the frames. This provides a photo frame-like display of what is behind the wall that simulates a gallery-like effect in the garden. The required facilities of all private blocks are combined into a public park for the whole district. All neighbourhoods adjoin this central green space, establishing a public realm that acts on different scale levels. The park anchors the new district in the surrounding forest landscape, rooting urban functions in a natural environment. As a cohesive green core, this provides a shared identity to all surrounding neighbourhoods. “The edges are treated as interfaces, establishing strong connections between the neighbourhoods and the park,” explains Michiel van Driessche, landscape architect and partner of Felixx. “The western side is a formal

boulevard, accompanied by evergreen pine trees, creating a lasting experience in every season. On the eastern side sits an informal walkway, planted with flowering shrubs and trees, creating a continually changing image. Between these two sides, a network of paths ensures that the park is part of the daily walking routes of all residents. To activate the park, the functions and facilities which are normally located within the block are centralised. Sports facilities are combined into public sport clusters. Together with the kindergartens they create neighbourhood destinations in the park. Playing areas are integrated in a three-dimensional landscape. Grass hills with playgrounds alternate with depressions, which may temporarily fill with water. Specially designed squares along the boulevard in the west and wooden piers along the flower path in the east, connect the park to the neighbourhoods. The aim of the park is to create a public space which can be used during the whole year, offering an enchanting realm in every season. www.felixx.nl
