Transforming urban landscapes! Our October issue of Landscape focuses on select projects, which by definition are transforming the landscape in front of them from one state into another- from desert into urban green communities that will leave a legacy and indeed a blueprint for future designers and architects.

Untitled-1 1

Regardless of whether the landscape architects are building from scratch and turning arid desert land into urban walkable communities like the Arab Engineering Bureau are doing with Abu Sidra City in Doha (page 12) or whether they are taking an established historic piece of hardscape land and transforming it into grassland as Claude Cormier + Associés inc. in collaboration with Aedifica have done with the Canadian Museum’s Civilization Plaza, page 54 (which won them the Regional Citation Award from the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects in 2011), we are in a constant mode of change and transformation and surely this can only continue to enhance the quality of our profession and most importantly our landscapes! 9/29/13 9:07:31 PM

We hope you enjoy reading through our features and please share your thoughts with us!

Dubai’s flowers & plants trade blossoms into AED 140 millionplus business 8th International Plants Expo Middle East to welcome over 5,000 visitors and industry professionals from around the world

O

wing to its strategic location adjacent to Europe, Asia and Africa, the UAE has steadily emerged as a major hub for the flowers and plants trade. Dubai in particular has blossomed into a bustling trading hub for flowers, live trees, seedlings, roots and bulbs. The emirate’s flowers and plants business is estimated at over AED 140 million and continues to amass a sizeable chunk of a GCC flower market estimated to be worth around AED 970 million. Moreover, according to experts, the UAE’s plant and flower market is expected to achieve an annual growth of 20 per cent, driven by factors such as strong economic growth and the country’s resurgent

Tarek Sibai

Project Manager, Planetfair real estate sector which is on track for a 15-20 per cent average annual growth over the next two years. Flowers entering into Dubai mostly come from Africa, Asia and South America, while re-export destinations include GCC states, Russia, Asia-Pacific countries and Europe. The Dubai Flower Centre at the Dubai International Airport is currently considered the most modern logistics center for the Middle East’s flowers and plants industry. Growth opportunities, industry trends, and the best technologies and practices surrounding the thriving flowers and plants trade of Dubai and the entire Arab World will be revealed during the 2013 International Plants Expo Middle East (IPM), the only international horticultural trade show in the Middle East. Running from November 17 to 19, 2013 at Halls 3 and 4 of the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, the eighth edition of IPM will cover the entire chain for the horticultural industry, from greenhouse and nursery growers to landscape designers, architects and contractors. The show will be held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports. More than 5,000 visitors and industry professionals from all over the world are expected to gather at the upcoming edition of IPM. Like the previous edition, this year too the highly-awaited event is expected to see exhibitors from Europe dominating the show, followed by exhibitors from Africa, Asia, GCC, the Middle East and The Americas. “Flowers and plants have become big business here in Dubai and across the Middle East; sales were brisk even during the peak of the recession. The sector has also been a good fit to the sustainability focus of Dubai and the rest of the UAE. With the entire region going through a steady recovery mode, we can expect even more opportunities to arise. IPM Dubai 2013 is a vital platform for gauging where the horticultural business stands, where it is headed, and what needs to be done to secure a bright, lucrative future for this trade,” said Tarek Sibai, project manager, planetfair. IPM Dubai 2013 will feature displays and discussions on Plants, Technology, Floristry, Garden Features, Ornamental Gardening, Plants Maintenance, and Plants Logistics. It will be mobilized through close cooperation among Dubai Municipality, Dubai Airports Cargo & Logistics and Dubai Flower Centre. The event is an offshoot of Germany’s IPM ESSEN, the world’s leading plant industry trade show. This year’s edition is being organized by leading German events and exhibitions organizers Planetfair and Messe Essen. unique masterplan that creates a vibrant complimentary mixed use within the development of varied urban character utilizing heritage and cultural values, and green connectors towards a walkable community. This is the main objective in creating Abu Sidra sense of place. Abu Sidra is situated within a 13km radius of Central Doha. Surrounded by open urban fringes, it is considered

to be the last frontier of built masses in southwest of the capital. The master plan has been developed as part of a long term strategy for the enhancement of this location which will ultimately become a suburban town centre providing a living and working community within a well managed environment. This is to enhance the lifestyles of residents and consumers by creating progressive solutions which break away from market norms.

urban development

Public Realm The site encompasses an area of 1,376,111.40 meter square located at a junction which will in future connect Abu Samra to the Industrial Area and Al Waab Street. The site is very well-connected to main highways and access corridors to the other parts of Doha. The upgrading and creation of new connecting roads rendered the site highly strategic for the development of a new integrated neighbourhood. This makes it a sizeable area for an integrated contained development plan, a prime location for the future extension of Doha’s urban conurbation and potentially one of the city’s significant sub-centers.

The land gently undulates from North to South, with a difference level about 4meters along the Al Waab Road. An agricultural asset comprised of cultivated land and animal farms currently occupies about 25% of the

site. There is also an interesting Agroecological system of extracted water from 50meters below ground using a well for the irrigation channels to irrigate the mature Date palms and other trees planted along the unpaved pathways. A thorough site analysis of the existing condition and the site position within Doha urban expansion was done to determine the inherent qualities that make the site distinctive. The design tries to ensure that the existing character and community values are respected where possible. This process has been structured around a set of urban design principles that have guided the evolution of the Masterplan from the beginning. It has resulted in a development of a framework that has been agreed after the exploration of numerous options between AEB and Urban Planning and Development Authority (UPDA). The illustrative Abu Sidra Masterplan reflects the ambitions for the development of the site, building upon the established design principles. It describes the design intention for this new community that will continue to evolve responding to the development requirements and market changes. The current Masterplan is based on a mixture of components recommended by market study done. The concept shows that Abu Sidra will be integrated into the surrounding residential, industrial and rural areas and will engage the open space network to deliver series of green parks and simplified pedestrian connectivity. The broader aim in creating a sustainable mixed-use town centre and diversities of residential choices supported by vehicular and strong pedestrian networks.

The development shall comprise low-rise residential apartments, landed housing, health care facility, retail and F&B outlets, resort hotel, community centre and ultimately, a lifestyle retail mall. All of these elements shall be developed around a central green area, a conservation of an existing farm. The intention of this development is to create an attractive community environment which

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

focuses on landscaped plazas and promoting strong pedestrian activity at street level. This low density community is complemented by a series of higher density development close to the commercial hub . These create a population density for the development rendering it viable and self sustained. The Green Network system is crucial to the creation of an attractive and livable environment for Abu Sidra City. Consistent with the green principles for all, the open spaces have been designed to give residents easy access within 400 m etres walking distance from their home. The City belt running across the entire site will serve as the main circulation for the community of Abu Sidra City. The convenience and proximity of its placement will introduce a new way of suburban living to transit to and from between facilities and dwellings. Along the City Belt, decorative artworks of sculptures and street art depicting the history and culture of the site will serve as place marks. The parks and public spaces incorporated into the Abu Sidra city encourage the sense of community within the area. These social spaces of pocket parks and Desert Park will not only enhance the quality of living for its inhabitants, but will also bring the sense of community to the development. These parks will incorporate local art and culture elements developing the space as a sense of place making.

urban development Community Park – Green node and social network

The Desert Park next to the commercial Mall area will be the main park offering various activities in a sustainable environment while integrating the outdoor realm with the mall interior. Collected and recycled grey water harvested from the Mall will be filtered in the Natural Wadi themed pool in the park, solar powered pole lights will light up the park during night time and widely used local

and native plantations depicting the Desert ambience. Tensile covered play structures creates festive atmosphere while providing shades for the children to play. Pocket parking in between trees compliments to the overall theme. This unique park will stay away from the normal green park theme found in Doha. It will be a benchmark park with a sustainable Desert concept. Large

numbers of Sidra trees will be planted in the Park showcasing the beauty of the Qatar national tree complimenting to the cultural aspect of the site. Abu Sidra sustainable neighbourhood is an area where an efficient use of land, high quality urban design and effective integration in the provision of physical and social infrastructure combined to create a place people want to live in.

Green Banking Blue Stream helps UNB in realizing its recycling ambitions Banks and financial institutions are among the largest paper consuming organizations within all industries. Office paper is highly recyclable, but a lot gets wasted. Reports reveal that recycling 1 ton of mixed paper can save the energy equivalent of 185 gallons of gasoline. Another statistic shows recycling the same amount of paper conserves 7,000 gallons of water, saves 17 trees and more than 3 cubic yards of landfill. In an increasingly eco-conscious market, many businesses are finding ways to go green. Most banks are aiming towards pursuing green initiatives to distinguish themselves as green businesses.

20

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

Sustainable Recycling Network

Traditional banking is still a necessity for a lot of consumers and for the banks itself. This method still generates a lot of paper waste which can be recycled. For many banks, better managing the paper they have and reducing their paper footprint has become.a.significant.environmental. sustainability.challenge. One such bank, recognizing this challenge is the Union National Bank, Abu Dhabi. Union National Bank identified the need to create awareness amongst employees about environmental and social responsibilities. To overcome this challenge, Blue Stream Environmental Technology and Union National Bank joined hands to promote

T

oday, many banks around the world are switching to paperless banking by offering online banking facilities to its customers. Not only do the customers receive their statements through e-mail, they also make their payments and transfers using this mode. This service has massively reduced the amount of paper used by the customers for all their banking transactions, which in turn saves the environment. Adopting green banking practices helps promote environmentalfriendly practices as well as reduces your carbon footprint from banking activities.

the importance of recycling in banks. The bank’s objective was to create awareness and drive its employees to adopt and implement environmental standards enabling an eco- friendly business, which would benefit future generations.

Segregated Recycling Units

Blue Stream made this possible by creating a customized VEGA model recycling station, which was placed in and around the bank. The VEGA range was designed with a primary focus on aesthetics without compromising on practicality. The range of containers has been conceptualized specifically to accommodate large volumes of segregated recyclables design. Available in multiple stream designsthe VEGA range has a flap system for each segregated opening namely general waste, can, glass and plastic. The entire product functions on a secure waste collection system with lock and key access only to cleaners.

22

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

Prospects for the future

This is the first phase of the recycling program initiated by the Union National Bank. The bank will eventually focus on recycling in all its branches throughout U.A.E. This initiative from Union National Bank will be a stepping stone for more and more banks and institutions to not only focus on recycling but to consider green banking as a proactive and smart way of thinking with a vision for future sustainability. The objectives of Recycling at is to contribute towards an environmental cause by saving landfill space, conserving natural resources and reducing pollution; and to cultivate an environmental awareness among employees. If everyone makes an effort to recycle waste, we will be acting to care about the environment both now and in the future, thus using our diminishing natural resources more wisely and sustain our environment for generations to come.

green walls

The Original Green Wall

I

t’s not uncommon for villas in Dubai to be enclosed by a boundary wall. In addition to these wall surfaces there are then the walls of the actual villa. This can add up to a substantial amount of unflattering masonry. In some cases because of limited space it may be impossible to plant screening shrubs to ‘hide’ these unattractive elements. Even when space is available it may not be possible to grow plants tall enough to hide all the masonry. This means there is limited scope to create a more natural ‘green’ look. What to do, The way it ‘can’ and should be.

However help is at hand! Now with little inconvenience and minimal cost you can transform your villa and its surroundings by acquiring the services of a good professional to fit ‘stainless steel’ tying wires (climbing wires) to all your external

24

walls and create your own vertical garden without huge amounts of spaces required! There are ‘many’ climbing plants on the market with various characteristics and colours to ensure the new look is ‘never boring’. There are also various stainless steel elements required to give the initial fitted product an architectural feel.

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

Firstly you must appoint a competent person who is familiar with all the various elements required. Secondly it is important to express exactly what you want and where you wish the tying wires fitted and to what height etc. etc. Fixings are typically ‘never’ placed any closer than fifteen centimetres to a door or window jam. This is because the plants will make ‘some encroachment’ on their own without support.

This is why it is preferable to allow space to prevent the blocking of light and restricting the movement of openings. It is advisable to use good quality and stronger fixings (hooks) in the walls at either end of each run as when tension is applied to the wire it will place a degree of stress on these fittings. Extra tension will also be applied from the weight of plants as they grow and develop

Step by Step

Each stainless steel run should be placed at no more than 50 centimetres apart horizontally with the top wire within 30 cm of the top of a boundary wall. This will allow plants to clamber over the wall with ease. The maximum vertical separation should be no more than 1.5 meters although this can vary slightly to ensure the distance between each vertical wire is equidistant to the other spaces on the wall. In addition to vertical and horizontal wires there must also be two diagonal wires fitted opposite to each other to ensure plants have as much climbing assistance as possible. At both ends of each individual wire it is ‘a must’ to add ‘tensioners’ to tighten the wire so it looks more attractive. These tensioners may have to be adjusted periodically to ensure the wire remains taut. It is also advisable to fit miniature ‘pulley wheels’ to prevent friction at every

However by using tying wires on top of existing walls it is possible to ensure ‘complete safety’ while still complying with strict planning authority guidelines. In addition to these wires it would then be an option to grow climbers in this area to reduce noise and increase privacy.

junction where the wire changes direction. This item will greatly reduce your requirement for tensioners while substantially enhancing the richness and overall architectural appearance of the tying wire.

What you need,

Fitting tying wires is like assembling a jigsaw. You require ‘all’ the pieces and then must figure out where they go. It is a very fulfilling task as you get substantial benefits from minimal effort. If done correctly it can enhance a property greatly even before the plants mature. There are various sizes and types of tying wire available from 1.5 mm upwards. You can choose bare wire, upvc or nylon coated. These two covered versions can come in any colour to blend with surroundings and are also kinder to plants. The various fittings are readily available and will last for a substantial period of time.

walls to assist climbing plants in their ascent. These can be powder coated to any colour either to blend with surroundings or to make a bold statement. This addition can increase privacy in a colourful way without the risk of root damage to structures from tree planting which is the only other option to achieve this goal.

People have been growing climbing plants to use as screening for generations all over the world. The system mentioned above was the original ‘green wall’ concept. Recent developments have introduced new systems where there is substantially more structure and expense required and is not practical or viable for private residences. The great lengths that these people are going to in order to create the ‘ultimate green wall’ proves the enduring attractiveness of the wall climbing plant concept. So why not attempt to create you’re very own piece of wall climbing utopia!

Safety and permission,

Today we have many high-rise balconies in Dubai. These balconies can be extremely hazardous to children for obvious reasons. Planning authorities will not allow the overall aesthetic exterior appearance of buildings to be

Upsize for strength,

If you wish to place ‘heavier’ plants that require ‘more support’ like grapevines for instance ensure that you upsize your tying wire and fittings to accommodate any extra weight. These heavy duty wires and fittings can also be used to stretch overhead to join two sets of climbers together which are on opposing walls and create ‘a perfume tunnel’. Alternately it is also possible to create trellis using this system as long as you have a frame in either wood or stainless steel to support the wires.

Gain height,

Walls can also be extended upwards with the assistance of ‘rigid’ fencing on top of boundary

The villa architectural structures were blended into the landscape in a natural balanced way by the creation of new structural elements along the garden and the development of water features. An automatic central irrigation system has been installed helping to reduce the water consumption as well as the wooden pine bark mulch covering the full ground covers and shrubs area reducing the evaporation of the water and providing a natural cover.

Flexibility to deploy cliff dwelling plants in a modular form across the center’s varied planes and surfaces enables the vegetation and hypertufa to mimic the desert landscape. Interview

Interview with Nicola Nikolic What is your current position in the company? Currently I am working as a senior landscape architect in post contract, but when it is necessary, I also work in the design section as a landscape designer.

Nicola Nikolic

Landscape Architect

42

Can you give us a brief about your educational background and your experience in the GCC area? I graduated at the University of Belgrade,

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2013

Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture in 2011. During my studies I tried to learn as much as possible about landscape architecture and the differences in design approach. I was heavily involved in international workshops and participated in student competitions when possible. I worked on extending my knowledge while working with my Faculty as a student demonstrator and at the projects within the Youth Association of Landscape Architects of Serbia.

Circle Internal

Flowing Park Palm Park I got a job offer in Doha a few months after my graduation with my current company, CEG International. Since then I have been working in both design and post contract within a variety of projects, from governmental to private. In the GCC you have to fight for your place in the market and it is the same thing in work, this motivates me and pushes you to the limit.

What inspired you to become a landscape architect? I grow up in Belgrade and as a capital city, living in that kind of urban environment has its ups and downs. I used to live nearby a forest and lake and I could easily see the benefits of living surrounded by this greenery and nature, but still have the benefits of living in big city. During my high school I got interested in architecture,

urban planning and sustainable development and all those things led me to become a landscape architect. When did CEG International first set up the business? CEG is a Qatari owned company, operating since it was founded in 1975. The firm is a Grade “A registered local & international consultancy.

Final Flowing Internal How has the business expanded since its inception? CEG INTERNATIONAL ‘s sophistication in building technology application and commitment to excellence in service maintaining the highest standards of professional’s expertise quality and integrity has resulted in a portfolio that features some of the most important architecture accomplishments in the country completing over 2,500 complex projects with a total value of around $ 2.5 Billion.

What are the main challenges you have encountered thus far whilst working for your firm and how do you deal with them on a personal level? The main challenges for me as a young designer is how to respond to the client’s requests in the right way. I am trying to get familiar with their habits and personal style so I can include that in my design process. In your opinion, what are the essential attributes that any landscape architect should possess? Every landscape architect besides being creative must be persistent and persuasive. What is your dream project? It is definitely to be a part of a design team for a large urban development project, such as Lusail city. What is the most frustrating aspect of your work? And the most rewarding one? It may sound clichÊ, but when you love your job it is hard to say that any aspect of it is frustrating. There are always

Palm Internal problems that every engineer encounters on the project and solving the process may look frustrating for someone who is looking from the outside in, but the result is always rewarding. The most rewarding aspect is finished the project, especially when both sides are satisfied with the outcome. When you know you were involved in creating something where generations will enjoy and when you see your project live, that feeling is really amazing.

Where do you see the GCC in 10 years from now with respect to developments and landscaping? GCC is a never ending development. During the last decade the world saw some of the most amazing projects being conducted in the region and I think that in ten years time, the GCC will still be a leader in urban development. Also, we will focus even more attention on sustainable development and green architecture; well designed open, green

The two-hectare site comprises a series of islands and belvederes overlooking two landform basins containing rich local damp meadow and The Causeway, an extension of the city wall route, routes circling around and through the Centre. Highlights include:

Habitat Islets Two habitat islets emerge from the water meadow. One reached by bridge from the children’s library creates a place where children can read and be informed in a stimulating natural environment surrounded by the wonder of nature, scented plants, wild life nests and a mini orchard. The second is a wildlife haven with large canopy trees and coppiceplanting providing secluded nesting and roosting and includes the rare Black Poplar Trees.

The Water Meadow A wildflower water meadow is the principal landscape, a resource for environmental education, robust enough to deal with seasonal flooding from the river, with low maintenance demands. Locally harvested seeds from a site of special interest include cowslips, orchids,

Sustainable Drainage System The water meadow also serves a practical purpose dealing with sustainable urban drainage; filtering rainwater and surface water through reed bed swales and working with the environmental engineering of the building by virtue of the evaporative cooling process with prevailing south-westerly winds.

he Canadian Museum of Civilization, designed by Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal and inaugurated in 1989, is comprised of two pavilions, their architecture a startling embodiment of the country’s distinguishing geographical features. The public display wing replicates the dramatic effect of the glaciers; the contours of the curatorial wing symbolize the majestic Canadian Shield; and the open Plaza simulates the vast Great Plains. The layout and sheer size of the Plaza were planned in such a way as to visually incorporate the Museum buildings and the Parliament Buildings perched across the Ottawa River. However, the Plaza’s

Topography Infinity From the plaza to the museum Photo by: Michel Boulianne lack of appeal had left it empty of visitors for much of the year. To remedy the situation, we extended the Museum’s original conceptual metaphor, bringing to life what had long remained latent: the swaying grasses of the Prairies.

The prairie topography has been recreated through hillocks interspersed across the Plaza and wound through by snaking pathways, suggestive both of the Museum’s curves and the soft and undulating prairie landscape. The granite paving stones hug and accentuate the gently rising mounds. The introduction of an urban prairie to the environment creates a microclimate, increases biodiversity, lessens heat island effect, and improves air quality—in short, lures the public through an appeal to the senses, without in any way hindering the stunning view that defines the site. With an aim to enriching the visitor’s experience, our design of the Urban Prairie, spurred by the distinctive architecture of the Museum, evokes this sweeping expanse in the Canadian landscape.
