T

he Landscape Way design provides a welcoming image for the public, while screening the less visually desirable aspects associated with the functional operations of Ras Abu Abboud Road and the Terminal Approach Road. An important aspect associated with the Landscape Way is a seamless integration within the approach for the airport district as a whole. This Landscape Way includes soft and hard landscape, landscape lighting, irrigation systems, urban furniture and street lighting elements. The new landscaped area is approximately 156 hectares and is located on both the Ras Abu Aboud Road and the new Terminal access road and includes three interchanges, in addition to the 32 hectares of previously completed landscape. Non-maintenance related access to the site is prohibited except for users of the bicycle path which is integrated into the design. Service Access onto the site is provided at multiple points, and service routing is accomplished through the use of designed vehicular pathways and clear utility corridors located throughout the project. The site design is rooted in the desert character of Qatar. The pattern of site walls crisscrossing the

landscape reflects the fractal nature of sabkha and colonising corals of the Arabian Gulf. The series of walls create a patchwork of cells that showcase naturalized plant groups and create a beautiful, dynamic landscape with evolving ways of experiencing the drive to and from the New Doha International Airport. The design for Ras Abu Aboud Road utilises some of the cues established on the terminal approach road but as its character is more defined by more closely adjacent future development, it is appropriate that the landscape be more metropolitan in nature. The goal of showcasing naturalized desert plants is still evident; however, the planted form is more rows and bosques than the clump and gap pattern of the terminal approach road. Walls are concrete core with Jordanian limestone cladding and are approximately 750mm high. The colour of stone contrasts with the colour of plant material and locally sourced limestone aggregate paving utilised. Another example of the Qatari forms is the barchans dune metaphors. These large dune shapes are located along Ras Abu Aboud Road as forms hug the road and provide a backdrop for the

rows of trees and plantings. Larger limestone outcrops are used along the terminal approach road as objects in the landscape which intercept views toward the horizon and provide a depth of perspective. The sidra tree Ziziphus spina-christi is the National tree of Qatar. The design uses the tree in areas of high importance to reflect its significance. The terminal interchange features rows of sidra organised along the north-south axis as a tribute to Qatar’s maritime history and future in aviation. More than 1,400 Ziziphus trees have been planted. The planting design is such that only native or naturalized xeric species are utilized effectively, lowering water consumption. Along the terminal approach road, the plantings are clumped to create small ecosystems, or communities, where the plants have a greater chance of success. A total of 6,400 trees and palm trees have been planted, including 536 large boxed specimen trees – some of them weighing 9 tonnes – which were shipped from UAE to Doha by barge. Most of the ground cover plants have been propagated and grown on in the temporary on-site nurseries. Rough quantities of appropriate plant

courtesy of Nakheel Landscapes materials were determined based on calculations of available irrigation volume and daily water needs. The irrigation system is supplied through waste water re-use, produced by the Airport sewage treatment plant. The top surface of tree pits and planted beds is covered by a layer of organic mulch, locally made of recycled wood

waste, in order to minimise the water evaporation and avoid weeds. Site lighting supports the landscape elements. Tree up lighting via lowwattage metal halide ground surface mounted luminaires will draw attention to the tall plantings at night. The low wattage is utilised to minimise light pollution and sky-glow. Pole mounted

multi-head metal halide accent luminaires are used to illuminate site stone features and walls. The erection of bespoke street lighting elements was part of the Landscape Way scope of works. Additional 225 Nos of 28m high ‘Arabesque’ lighting poles will be installed at later stage on Ras Abu Aboud Road.

Main Board Director

Tech and the City

not such a happy combination, according to new research

O

nly one urban designer in five believes that Information Technology (IT) is having a significant positive impact on the well-being and happiness of citizens living in global cities – that is the headline of research into the impact of IT on cities and towns by global architecture, urbanism and design practice Broadway Malyan.

24

In September Broadway Malyan interviewed 60 expert urban designers and master planners across its 16-strong global studio network – in Asia (India, Shanghai and Singapore), Europe (Azerbaijan, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the UK), the Middle East (Abu Dhabi) and Americas (Brazil and Chile). The research reveals that IT is playing a major role across global cities – in aiding

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

movement, driving the use of shared places, improving city management, changing the appearance and form of cities and delivering better designed buildings and places – but, critically, IT is not significant in enhancing citizens’ actual well-being and happiness. James Rayner, Main Board Director and master planning expert at Broadway Malyan says: “Projections of urban population

growth tell us, that between 2000 and 2050, the amount of urban space will need to be doubled in developed countries and expanded by 326 per cent in developing countries to accommodate people. This is equivalent to building a city the size of Greater London every month for the next 40 years.” Modern construction technology is enabling rapid expansion in cities to help meet the demand for new urban space and housing and IT is helping to analyse huge amounts of data, connect individuals in new ways and enhance control of resources and built environments – promising smarter and more livable cities and places. In all the talk about so-called ‘smart cities’, in which ‘smart’ technology will be harnessed to make cities greener, more efficient and improve the quality of life for citizens, there is an implicit assumption that technology will result in happier and more enjoyable places.. “While our experts predict that IT will play an increasing role in helping citizens move about in cities, it will create new types of shared places, aid city management and drive citizens’ engagement in decision-making,’ explains Rayner. Broadway Malyan reports that IT is not contributing to citizens’ well-being and happiness in any significant way. “We see IT as a new layer to cities, enhancing our ability to interact with our built environment rather than replacing or mediating our basic human needs for shelter, culture, recreation, social and economic activity. We urge that the human experience is kept at the heart of city and place design and that the focus is put on creating well-designed places which enhance the well-being and happiness of citizens,” says Rayner. The UK government predicts that the global market for smart city solutions will be $408bn by 2020 and it believes that the UK has particular strengths in delivering services which could account for up 25 per cent of the total market. In July, India’s new government announced it will spend $1.13bn on building 100 smart cities, taking its cue from developments elsewhere in Asia, including China and Singapore. Broadway Malyan’s research identified views from urban designers within five key areas: Movement around cities, use of shared places, and management of cities, appearance and form of cities and well-being and happiness. According to the research, almost half of the experts say that IT is making it significantly easier and faster to move around their city, while just over a third describes the impact as slightly better. Asked which IT has the biggest positive impact in aiding movement around their city, nearly half nominate smart phones with GPS, with real-time information display boards the next most highly-rated technology. 40 per cent suggest that smart traffic control will be the IT that makes the biggest positive impact on movement around their city in the future, while just over a fifth nominate driverless cars and vehicles. A quarter say that IT is significant in encouraging the use of shared public and community places, such as parks and plazas in their city, while 40 per cent describe its impact as slight.

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

25

technology Nearly three-quarters predict that IT will help to create entirely new types of public and community facilities in their city in the future. Two-thirds report that IT significantly improves the management of their city, while just over a quarter advise it has a slight impact. Asked which IT will have the biggest impact on the management of their city in the future, just over a quarter say data collection and just under a quarter nominate traffic management. The vast majority predict that IT will encourage people to participate in making decisions about their city in the future. Approaching half report that IT is having a significant impact on the appearance and form of their city, while just over a third talk of a slight impact. Asked which IT is having the biggest impact on the appearance and form of their city, nearly one third nominate large scale video screens, while just over a quarter suggest building design, materials and construction – other suggestions include telecom masts, antennae and satellite dishes. Nearly half say that IT is having a significant impact in enabling the design of better buildings and places, while almost a third reports it is having a slight impact. However, despite the above, less than one in five experts believe that IT is significantly improving the well-being and happiness of citizens in their city – while under one third describes it as only resulting in a slight improvement and just over a third attribute a moderate improvement. Asked which IT will have the biggest impact on the well-being and happiness in their city in the future, over a third nominate medical and health monitoring and diagnostics – compared with one in five who suggest IT that aids freedom of movement. Distinguished by its global reach with 16 studios across world centres, unrivalled diversity with 500 plus design experts and distinctive client focus with over 75 per cent income from repeat business, Broadway Malyan creates world-class and fully-integrated cities, places and buildings to unlock lasting value and deliver a ‘return on design’.

Botanical Garden

Parque Explorador QuilapilĂşn By Jimena Martignoni

A botanical and theme garden resulting from mining compensation

28

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

P

arque Explorador Quilapilún is a public park and botanical garden located in the Colina district, northeast of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile, and 14 kilometers of the city. Exclusively dedicated to the exhibition of two of the most important flora formations native to the central part of Chile –the Thorny and Esclerophilus Forest and Shrubland– this thematic site is the result of a compensation project of Anglo American, one of the world´s largest mining companies. The new park is the first botanical garden in the Metropolitan Region of the capital city of Chile and the second one in the country, therefore setting a very significant precedent at national level. The park itself covers 4.5 hectares but it represents a very small portion of a much larger project of approximately 380 hectares. These 380 hectares are the sum of different areas which make up part of a large environmental reparation Master Plan implemented around a tailing dam in the Colina district. The mines themselves lie in the Andes, 120 miles away from the site. The tailing dam is located approximately 3.5 miles away from the land reclaimed for the project, taking advantage of a natural depression among the hills; the exceeding mix of water and copper resulted from the extraction processes is conducted and decanted here. The project is a result of several offset compensation requirements. Sernatur (National Service of Tourism), SAG

(Agriculture and Livestock Service) and CONAF (National Corporation of Forestry) asked for different requisites and the projects combine them all in one single plan also aimed at the creation of a sustainable legacy. The plan Bravo proposed responds to the site´s conditions with four different landscape repairing situations: a Buffer, a 60-hectare strip located along the sides of the adjacent highway which isolates the industrial worksites; a 278 hectare - area of exclusion, where 132 hectares are destined

30

for forest compensation to regenerate the area´s natural conditions; a biotechnology park of 40 hectares - out of which 18 hectares are planted with native species for educational and research purposes - and a public park which exhibits the native flora of the central region of Chile. The latter, named Parque Explorador Quilapilún, was the first component of the plan to be completed. Edged by an important highway on its northern border, this piece of land offers great views to the Chacabuco´s

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

Valley and, on its southern border, connects to a pre-existing marsh currently drained. The location for this park responded not only to the presence of the highway, which would allow better accessibility, but also of the “casa Quilapilun”, an old farm house dating from 1850 and which had been declared historical heritage in 1981. The eventual restoration and renovation of this building as another cultural component was one of the main reasons for the exact location of the park.

Parque Explorador basically replicates two local ecosystems: the Thorny Shrubland and Forest (Matorral y Bosque Espinoso) and the Esclerophilus Shrubland and Forest (Matorral y Bosque Esclerófilo). The botanical studies had showed that the Oak Forest (Bosque de Robles) and the High Andean Forest (Bosque Altoandino) were also native to this region, but the actual climate conditions of the park´s location only allowed for the correct development of the first two. For this

reason, these two groups are broken into four areas, making a clear spatial and conceptual differentiation between forest and shrub species. From a design perspective, this decision is directly connected to the pre-existing topographical conditions of the site, which presented a marked depression toward the south-western side. By planting the taller species (which correspond to the Esclerophilus

Shrubland and Forest) in the lower area, the overall height of the park´s canopy remains the same. The change elevation of the site also allowed for the creation of a terraced plantation and walking circuit, generating natural lookouts and elevated areas that overlook others and help to provide a more dynamic space. A height difference of almost 1.5 metres can be achieved between levels and paths; perceived

and experienced as balconies, these walking areas were edged with custom designed fences, some made of stone and some of metallic meshes. The recreated forests and shrub lands were laid out at one side of the park´s access area, taking over the less flat areas, and the even surfaces were saved for the public facilities and plazas at the opposite side. In this manner, the main walking circuit moves into the dense plantation inviting the visitor to be part of the landscape. “We wanted to bring people into the forest, for them to have a real contact with it and we wanted the smaller gardens to become short stories,” says Consuelo Bravo. The Thorny Shrubland appears first, immediately adjacent to the main access and the Visitor Centre; then comes the

Thorny Forest taking over the central area of the site and, at the final portion, where the land is lower, the esclerophilus shrub land and forest complete the planting scheme. The first groups include species such as Espino caven (Acacia caven), Chilean Mesquite (Prosopis chilensis) and Tevo (Retanilla trinervis); the latter groups include Palque (Cestrum parqui), Mayten (Maytenus boaria), Peumo Cryptocarya), Boldos (Peumus boldus) and Lily of the Valley tree (Crinodendron patagua). The minor gardens, called “Theme Gardens”, are much smaller spaces which take some of the remaining areas along the edge of the site, especially the southern border, next to the drained marsh. These gardens show endangered species, native cacti and exhibit anthropological and historical use of local plants. In addition, an ethno-botanical garden displays native

and some introduced vegetable species that have a cultural meaning in Chile and grow under this climate conditions. This type of vegetation was also used for the Jardin Xerofito, or Xeriscape Visitor Garden, located at the opposite side of the Access Plaza, but constituting a larger recreational area. This garden offers a more urban experience, with three circular plazas marked with different floor patterns and materials such as gravel and sand and with low flower beds and bushes. One of the smaller circular plazas exhibits a sculpture, a spiral made of wooden poles. Next to this area, the project incorporates a particularly natural-looking amphitheatre, profusely planted with linear beds of purple pinkladies (Onneothera sp) which edge the seating spots made of recycled wood. The access area concentrates all the public facilities, Visitor and Information Center, Coffee and Gift Store and esplanade, knitted together with a large wooden pergola which extends in a north-south direction, along the entire width of the site at this point, providing shade. Immediately next to the park’s entrance a public plaza creates a separate space which remains open for the local community when the park is closed, creating a gathering common area for the people of Colina and Til-Til.

32

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

The Visitor Center is designed with bioclimatic principles which assure low energy consumption and low environmental impact, meeting the requirements of LEED Certification for new constructions (US Green Building Council). Built with adobe bricks made by local craftsmen and presenting the first green roof in Chile planted only with native species, this 250m2-building has received Gold Certification.

Completing the recreational program of the park, a series of five themed trails that relate the landscape with the local fauna can be identified within the forests. Marked with a custom designed signing system, made of pieces of tin that show birds and animals, these routes seek to meet the different needs and curiosity of children of different ages. The park is open for special school visits and cultural events.

omplementing an impressive classical palace, this garden was designed to highlight the residence, becoming a reflection of the faรงade. Symmetrical, geometric, and linear, the garden follows a grid inspired by ancient literature - Persian rugs, and the sprawling and luxuriant gardens of 18th century Italy, France, and Iran. The lush,

exclusive gardens are a visual feast, providing pleasant views throughout the residence, and sensory pleasures for a promenade. The launch of this project was preceded by an extensive research on 17th and 18th century gardens aiming to find the secret to creating a space tamed and geometric, yet filled with mystery, magic and wonder. The inspiration came from

the oriental flair of ancient tales, and images inspired by arabian nights. From this, an elaborate design that blends Arabesque features comes to life, through the combination of visual, sensory and olfactory elements. The delicate lacework created is a paradise of colour and movement. As an oasis in the middle of a hot and dry desert, the garden needed to have a very strong visual identity. As such, the gardens were treated as an extension of the internal patios and rooms, built according to the axes of the palace. Introverted gardens with extensive water elements flow out of pavilions, as open areas with hard and soft landscaping components transform into outdoor living spaces.

Every feature, from the reflective pools, gigantic jars and pebbles to the sails, pergolas, and pavilions, is here to create a sense of harmony both visual and sensorial, creating an exclusive, elegant, and classical garden reminiscent of the splendid gardens of history.

Al Sadeem Sports

UAE Academy enjoys new synthetic turf

Tigerturf leading the way on sports projects in the region

W

hen Al Sadeem Sports aimed to create a leading football academy for the Middle East on the Yas Marina Circuit East Entrance, TigerTurf had the solution. On a site strategically located on Yas Island near Ferrari World, Al Sadeem Sports intended to establish an academy fit to train over 250 players between the ages of eight and eighteen. With plans to attract globally-renowned coaches and host international tournaments, Al Sadeem Sports needed a football surface to match its big ambitions. TigerTurf worked alongside one of the largest turf contractors in the UAE – Flora Engineering Services - during the specification process and was awarded the contract thanks to their ability to deliver a top class product within a short time frame.

38

A spotlight on the yarn The two bespoke seven-aside football fields were created from TigerTurf’s market leading Atomic Pro 60 surface. The FIFA 1 star product was ideal for the project as it is constructed of an extra wear resistant yarn - a specific design for community level football - providing the desirable combination of advanced performance and durability. The ribbed surface and diamond shape of the yarn is the most advanced, durable grass

fibre on the market, boasting enforced resilience, increased comfort and safety as prime attributes.

Atomic Pro is able to retain high performance under the planned heavy usage of the pitch which enables the academy to achieve its ambition of keeping children healthy and active with extended playing hours. Extreme weather resistance and UV stability were also high on the academy’s agenda, alongside 22,500 playing hours guarantee offered by TigerTurf. The installation was undertaken at night between 10.00pm and 4.00am during the holy month of Ramadan and the majority of workers were fasting during the day. During the installation Flora Engineering overcame all challenges associated with base construction in the sandy region, including working through the night and avoiding set-backs from sand storms during construction.

Both fields measure 65 x 48m and are permanently marked with white and yellow lines to allow to be further divided into four, 5-aside football pitches. The feedback Stefano Vitali, one of the players attending the grand opening event Yas Kicks, commented: “We were very impressed with the pitches and the organisation. Every player who played on the opening day was very happy and impressed by the quality of the football grounds. We are looking forward to future tournaments to play on these pitches again. Bambang Sugeng Kajairi of Al Sadeem Sports commented: “Since opening we’ve held the Yas Kicks Tournament which was great for everyone involved and attracted the best talent from the region. The FIFA approved football surfaces are also accompanied by a gymnasium and changing rooms. A highly efficient booking system is now also in place so full use of the facilities can be achieved.

rubber and sand which enhance ball roll.

The global network of schools, Nord Anglia, recently invested in a new build education facility in Dubai and required top of the range sports facilities to match its internationally renowned reputation.

Advantage Pro was chosen for the tennis surface, designed with shock-absorbing characteristics that reduce the risk of injury and stress to the body, it has been designed so that it doesn’t shine when wet or under floodlights, as well as meeting International Tennis Federation (ITF) standards.

With the official opening in September 2014, and construction completed the month of August, TigerTurf manufactured two bespoke sports surfaces for the school, a full sized football pitch alongside tennis surfaces. Nord Anglia chose to invest in TigerTurf’s Soccer Real 60 XQ football surface as a result of breakthrough polymer processing that eradicates weak points which may occur in the yarns as a result of the shape, therefore producing unrivalled split resistance. This results in blades of grass which are durable enough to offer long-term elite level performance without damaging aesthetics. The third generation synthetic turf system is 60mm in length and comprises two unique profiled fibres; part-filled with

TigerTurf worked with Flora Engineering on the delivery of the surface which was completed in time for the school’s opening in September 2014 and is set to be enjoyed by the pupils throughout the school year. Understanding every need Ranjeet Singh, Sales Manager at TigerTurf commented: “The Yas Kicks and Nord Anglia installations demonstrate our growing presence in the Middle East as a premier synthetic sports surface provider. We know how the market works and how a quick turnaround between the investment decision, delivery and installation are essential.

“Not only do we provide the materials but we also work alongside our contractors to deliver on logistics and installation. TigerTurf is a FIFA and FIH licensed supplier of synthetic turf, and boasts very close affiliations with the FA, IRB, RFU, RFL, GAA, and ITF. Together with our contractors, we overcome common, and sometimes challenging, obstacles associated with installations in the region. We make bespoke, accurate recommendations on important elements that may affect the game and most importantly we advise on maintenance programs to get the best out of your turf in the Middle Eastern challenging weather conditions.

“Not only can investors be sure they are working with a supplier with the infrastructure in place to carry out the installation, but they can also be assured that the product is of the highest standard, manufactured in Britain and backed by the reliability of the TenCate brand. All TigerTurf products are tested under demanding conditions of exposure for UVA/ UVB stability; something that is crucial in the Middle East market. “The mounting acceptance of 3G surfaces for elite level football, rugby and tennis, provide landscaping and sports stakeholders with a huge opportunity to make synthetic turf central to their business offering. Schools and community facilities which invest in synthetic pitches can often make the most of leasing business opportunities through enhanced additional revenue streams. Synthetic surfaces are crucial for climates where natural grass is difficult to grow and maintain. Where water is of limited supply, synthetic turf can be offered as an alternative “These two projects demonstrate TigerTurf’s ability to deliver bespoke specifications in two quickly growing areas in the Middle East – community facilities and schools. As an internationally renowned sport, football continues to grow as the area attracts business migrants and their families, and the number of facilities need to be increased and improved to cater for this new demand. TigerTurf has a dedicated base in the Middle East and can support investors from initial advice and specification, through to delivery of a complete surface solution.”

n architects’ greatest and most important task is to design man-made ecosystems - to ensure that our cities and buildings suit the way we want to live. The aim is to make sure that cities offer a generous framework for different people, from various backgrounds, economy, gender, culture, education and age, so that they can live together in harmony while taking into account individual needs as well as the common good.

I www.landscape-me.com I October 2014

Nowhere is this challenge more acrimonious than in a zoo. It is the dream of Zootopia - with Givskud to create the best possible and freest possible environment for the animals’ lives and relationships with each other and visitors. To create a framework for such diverse users and residents such as gorillas, wolves, bears, lions and elephants is an extremely complex task.

he 46 storey tower located in the business hub of West Bay Doha is designed by Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB), one of the leading multidisciplinary consultancy firms in Qatar. Earlier this year Rabban Hospitality, the property developer, secured internationally recognised operator Frasers Hospitality, to manage the operation of this iconic tower, which now officially carries the name: Frasers Suites West Bay Doha. In addition to the architectural design which is inspired by ArtDeco design style, AEB secured construction supervision contract for the development of this new landmark property which will grace the modern Doha cityscape, and is due for completion by the end of 2015. The strong and stoic architectural facade of the building called for a complimentary landscape design expression. Palm motifs adorning the building are translated into surrounding landscape areas creating elegant arabesque urban gardens.

A range of cream and beige coloured materials with Date Palm patterns inspired from the facade are repeated on the external main entrance, paving and planters, creating a strong translation of the outdoor spaces to the interior of the building. Different levels of fluid curvy planter terraces create a welcoming statement with palm leaf patterns on the walls. Tall vertical palms frame the building, softening the impression created by this 46 story concrete edifice. The entrance is further accentuated by a sculpture of three bronze date palm

leaves differing in heights, immersed in the pool of bubbling jets providing visitors with- not only a pleasant visual experience- but also with tranquil sounds canceling the noise of the bustling business hub of West Bay.

The proposal of natural stone and timber finish for the seating benches with specially designed water features help create a warm and inviting space to the users on the outdoor terrace. The general landscape areas are to be filled with aromatic scented plantings, with a modern contemporary twist complementing the Art Deco architectural style. The planting concept articulates formal planting framing the entrance driveways, with tall vertical palms, flowering shrubberies and screen planting along the plot boundary. Low shrubberies of aromatic white fragrances are placed at all main areas while green hedges line the screen hedging, creating minimalist design with a touch of elegance. The colour scheme proposed for flowery plants is a mixture of white and soft pink hues.

arget Plaza is a direct response to the needs of Minneapolis, Minnesota’s evolving downtown, creating an urban park and pedestrian bridge that links together previously severed portions on the fringe of downtown including a new light rail hub and Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins’ new ballpark, Target Field by Populous. It extends the downtown fabric several blocks to create a progressive, year-round gateway experience which is now a part of downtown Minneapolis’ culture.

urban park seating, native limestone and a 285foot long wind veil commissioned by a local artist – has set the design standard for the blocks surrounding the new ballpark that have since been developed. The Plaza is highly flexible, an intuitively designed space that can transform depending on the usage. On game day, the design of the space sets the tone for the experience inside the ballpark, echoing the ballpark’s canopy through steel shade structures on either side of the Plaza, and offering a viewing platform to the game inside. On nongame days, the Plazas become a hub for commuters, downtown dwellers and curious tourists. In both cases, Target Plaza is an architectural beacon that makes the ballpark site an integral part of the urban fabric year-round.
