Our promises and commitments to you
Hello Welcome to the Spring edition of the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice newsletter.
The patient and their family are at the centre of everything we do at Eden Valley Hospice. Our care is personalised to ensure everyone’s individual circumstances are supported in a way that is most important to them and their loved ones.
2019 looks to be another busy year for the hospice, both in terms of developing our 2019-2025 Strategic Plan and beginning work on our Capital Project initiative. The Strategic Plan will help us prepare for the future demands on our service and ensure the hospice services are sustainable; ensuring we are ďŹ t for purpose and ďŹ t for the future. We are working to embrace the changing demands within our community so we can provide an eective and eďŹƒcient service that meets the needs of our local community. Part of this development requires us to commence an important Capital Project which will include a full refurbishment of the Adult In-Patient Unit. The bedrooms and bathrooms have not been refurbished since the hospice opened over 28 years ago. We plan to launch an appeal in May 2019 linked to the commencement of our 30th anniversary celebrations. There will be a wide range of fundraising activities, including the annual events such as the Colour Run and a range of new initiatives, including RideLondon-Surrey 100 and the London to Paris cycle. I have signed up for the London to Paris cycle, so I am trying to get myself in shape ready for the journey in September. There are still places available if you want to join me.

“She was our guardian angel at the worst time of our lives.” Sharon, Hayley, Summer and Sonny As a Macmillan Palliative Care Social Worker at the hospice, Wendy Ashton’s mission is to make sure patients get a good quality of life – for however long. Below, a family who Wendy supported explains the value of her role at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. Sharon, Hayley, Summer and Sonny explained, “The impact Wendy made on us - not just our late father but myself, sister and our extended family was truly amazing. She was our guardian angel at the worst time of our lives. “Before Wendy’s involvement, our father was not receiving the full care and support he needed. My sister and I had reached breaking point and felt unsure of the way to go with his care. Our GP, who works alongside Wendy, knew she was the only one who would be able to help. She was our light at the end of a very dark tunnel. “Wendy was able to give our father the full support he needed and helped us in looking after ourselves and families alongside caring for our father. She was able to organise respite at Eden Valley Hospice. This was an amazing opportunity for our father as before this he was subjected to laying in his house and looking at four walls from the results of his ill health. This little thing made a huge difference to our father’s last year, as once an active man, he was again able to socialise with new people who were going through a similar experience to him.”
The range of Complementary Therapies available at the hospice continues to expand. Therapies are offered free to patients, families and friends in our Day Hospice, Adult In-Patient Unit, Jigsaw and through Outpatient clinics. Our Complementary Therapies are also available to support bereaved families. Our Complementary Therapy Coordinator, Nicky Forbes, explains more about the service: What are Complementary Therapies? “Complementary therapies relax your body, calm your mind and can be useful when you need a helping hand – whether you are experiencing an illness, worries, anxieties or stress. “The therapies offered at the hospice are gentle and now widely recognised as working well alongside ongoing treatment and care.” What can I expect? “A therapy session can be received in a chair, in bed, on a therapy couch or wherever you are most comfortable. Sessions usually last around 30 minutes though a shorter session can still be beneficial and relaxing.
In late 2018 Wendy’s impact as Hospice Social Worker was recognised on a national level as she was awarded the Gold Award in the Making a Difference Category at the Social Worker of the Year Awards. With a deep passion for caring for people and their families coping with life-limiting illnesses, Wendy’s determination to guide them through the process with knowledge and dedication have made her a shining beacon for palliative care nationally. Wendy said, “When it comes to timescales, sometimes they can be very short, so it is important we are positive. It might only be for a couple of days, but quality of that time is so important. “I work as part of the Family Support Team and together we try to make a difference to people’s lives by offering social, emotional, spiritual and psychological support. Life can be short, but we support patients to live it to the full.” Along with receiving the Making a Difference Award in London last year, Wendy is representing Eden Valley Hospice, Jigsaw and the UK at the European Association of Palliative Care Conference in Berlin in May this year. At the event, Wendy will be presenting her Creative Frames Project which help to promote the ethos of self-worth, by creating legacy frames containing special achievements, memories and much more.

Expansion of Complementary Therapies at the hospice
“Most people experience a deep sense of relaxation and calm when they receive a complementary therapy. Some people experience a reduction in physical pain or other symptoms, such as nausea, headaches or digestion problems. Others find they sleep better, feeling settled and calm.” Who delivers therapy? “We have recruited a team of over 10 qualified therapists who volunteer their time and skills for the patients, their families and our staff. In addition, 12 staff members are trained in a variety of therapies to support patients while they receive medical treatment and care. “In addition to 1-to-1 sessions, the service also coordinates therapists to come into the hospice to deliver workshops, whether that is for Sound Therapy, Tai Chi or Chair Yoga.” In late 2018 the expansion of Complementary Therapies at the hospice was recognised at the Complementary Therapy Awards in London as Nicky and the team of volunteers received a special mention in the Palliative Care Category at the awards. Complementary Therapy volunteers Louise Bell and Andrea Cook explain why they choose to volunteer here at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.
At the hospices, we offer a range of therapies that are suitable for our patients and carers. These include: • Acupuncture • Breathing techniques • EFT Tapping • Kinetic Shift • Massage incl: Hand, feet and face massage, HEARTS, M Technique, Story Massage • Meditation and Mindfulness • Reflexology • Reiki • Simple Energy Techniques (SET) for self care
Picture Courtesy of the Cumberland News and News and Star
Louise explained, “I want to give carers a little of what they give to those they care for. It gives me so much pleasure to give half an hour of my time using skills I’ve been lucky enough to amass over the last few years to someone who really needs it. “I chose the hospice because my partner’s mum had help from there when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. It means a lot to my partner and his family.” Andrea concluded by saying “I chose Eden Valley Hospice because of the valuable work hospices do - I want to make a difference and give time to a worthwhile cause. I and other members of my family have been on the receiving end of complementary therapies delivered in a hospice setting in a different county. The support and relief it gave us as a family unit was absolutely priceless and helped us through a very difficult time. “I offer Reiki and EFT to staff and patients attending the Day Hospice and consider it a privilege to be part of such a wonderful team. I love it because I know first hand the benefits complementary therapies provide and I get immediate feedback from the patients and staff which makes it very rewarding.” To find out more about the range of Complementary Therapies provided at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw please visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org/ourcare/complementary-therapies If you would like to donate your time by becoming a volunteer in any department at the hospice please visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org/volunteer or call the Volunteering Team on 01228 810801.

A warm and welcoming home from home
Corporate support comes in many different ways Christmas Jumper Days, event sponsorship and volunteering days… there are many different ways local businesses make a huge difference to the care, support and activities provided at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw throughout the year. From donating money to volunteering their time, they all make a difference.
Here are just three ways three local businesses support the hospice... A caring partnership with the Cumberland Building Society
Hospice care is much more than a building where you go to die. When Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw care for someone at the end of their life we’ve only got one chance to get it right. It’s vital that we’re there to offer expert and compassionate support to every family in need.
Over the last five years, £27,862 has been donated to the hospice thanks to the generous savers who hold a special savings account at The Cumberland.
Hospice care provides tailored support to those with terminal or life-limiting conditions, no matter who they are or what they’re going through. We listen, understand and treat people with the dignity and respect they deserve.
Every year, money raised from this Affinity Account sees The Cumberland distribute 1% of the average total balance to the hospice. The money allows the hospice to continue our valuable work in providing care, support and activities to local adults and children with life limiting illnesses.
During March Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw have teamed up with hospices across the country to take part in Hospice UK’s Open Up Hospice Care campaign. Open Up Hospice Care is an awareness raising campaign which aims to broaden access to hospice care, so that more people who need it are able to get this type of care. This year’s campaign is themed around the home. Here at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw we are proud of our home in Cumbria. Every day your support helps our staff to create a warm and welcoming home from home environment for all our patients and families. From bringing in pictures and ornaments, to having visits from their pets, all our patients are able to personalise their room during their time with us. In a previous edition of Hospice News we shared with you a story from our former Housekeeping Team Leader, Cath Underwood, about the welcoming atmosphere we create at the hospice. “Here is a little story about an elderly lady who arrived from Newcastle by ambulance on a cold, dark evening in November, not knowing what was waiting for her as she made this journey to the hospice. “But as she arrived at Reception and looked down the room to see this lovely coal fire burning bright and crackling away she said to herself ‘I’m home’.” Throughout March we are encouraging all our supporters and the local community to share their thoughts on the
following questions as we aim to break down some of the barriers to hospice care: • What does home mean to you? • What does Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw mean to you? • What makes the hospice a home from home? We are encouraging everybody to share their thoughts on the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw Facebook pages or by emailing care@edenvalleyhospice.org or care@jigsawhospice.org What’s your Taste of Home? Sunday lunches with all the family? Learning to cook a crumble with your grandma? Food comes attached to precious memories. Sharing that food with family and friends is sharing and growing those memories and helping people get hospice care at the same time. During March, as part of Open Up Hospice Care, we are encouraging supporters to make a memorable meal to share with your family and friends in exchange for a donation to Eden Valley Hospice. The event is simple and anyone can take part. All you need to do is invite family and friends around for dinner, share your meal and evoke your memories and stories in exchange for a donation to help open up hospice care to everyone who needs it, wherever they are. Plus, it is easy and simple to make a £5 donation to the hospice too. All you have to do is text EVH to 70500 to Give £5 to Eden Valley Hospice or text JIGSAW to 70500 to Give £5 to Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. Alternatively, you can make a donation on the hospice website or drop off at the hospice reception.

A big part of the company is to sell my tastiest soft drink that is kind to others. I will always give 10% of the company profits to a children’s charity and I have chosen Jigsaw,
Delicious fruit and veg from Bensons Bensons are a family run business established over 100 years ago. We have a very loyal customer base who regularly visit our shop in the Market Hall in Carlisle and, as well as our stand, we deliver fruit and veg to the catering trade in and around Carlisle.
Becky Towns, Community Co-ordinator at the Cumberland, said “We’ve been lucky enough to see first hand, the huge difference all the team at the hospice make every day, not only to local people with incurable or life limiting illnesses, but their families during their time of need.” To find out more about the Affinity Account, simply visit www.cumberland.co.uk/savings or call into your local Cumberland branch. Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice as my charity of choice for the next two years. I have put their logo on the label so everyone who enjoys our lemonade knows about the charity. I visited the hospice and it was an obvious choice after seeing everything they do for poorly children and their families. So, the more Molly Rose Lemonade we all enjoy the more we raise for this amazing charity. My mum said “We are very proud supporters of Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, they offer exceptional care to children and endless support to their families during unimaginably difficult times. We are working hard at Molly Rose Drinks to drive high volumes of sales so that the hospice can benefit from Molly Rose’s inspirational story.”
Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw have been customers of Bensons for many years and we enjoy supporting the hospice in any way we can. It is a good local cause and you never know when you will require the services they provide. Along with suppling the hospice catering team we have donated fruit to different fundraising events, including bananas to the Colour Run. We provide fruit hampers as raffle prizes and make sure any excess fruit and veg goes to the hospice, so it can be put to good use rather than going to waste.

Grant pays for three days of Jigsaw care In early 2018 Grant Seaton aimed to raise £2,126.46 to Pay For a Day of Jigsaw Care. During a six month period Grant took part in 11 half marathons and hosted a Corporate Inter Company Paintball Challenge to reach his fundraising target.
Grant said “The Pay For a Day initiative is such a powerful one. I made a point of visiting Jigsaw on the morning of my first day. It really puts into context the good that the scheme delivers. I am so proud to be associated with the hospice and I would encourage others to do so also.” As well as the running challenge, Grant joined forces with Emma Lindsay of NXT Recruitment as they raised enough money to Pay For a Day of Jigsaw care. Grant and Emma, with the support of their respective companies Cumberland Building Society and NXT Recruitment, hosted a charity Race Night at the Hallmark Hotel in Carlisle. Emma also completed the Solway Half Marathon and the Great Cumbrian Run with Grant. Speaking before the fundraising challenge Grant, Senior Business Lending Manager at the Cumberland, said “I was looking for something to do this year and Jigsaw ticked all the boxes. I have chosen lots of charities to raise money for since 2010, when I started running. I have always had a real attachment and connection to the charities I have chosen.
Junior is a regular visitor at the children’s hospice, with his owner Jacqui, much to the delight of the children, young adults, families and staff. Jacqui, an Activity Coordinator at Jigsaw, brings Junior to the children’s hospice two or three times a week and on occasions they visit Eden Valley Hospice too. Jacqui explained, “Junior went to a lady in Penrith who is an assessor. It is important that dogs don’t react around people and children, but he was perfect – he just sat there. “They just love him at Jigsaw. He has his own PAT jacket which he wears so he knows when he is a going to work. He loves being fussed over.
“Some people have limited mobility, but they love to stroke him and touch his ears. One lady in a wheelchair brushed his coat which was good for both. For those who have
dogs at home, Junior brings some normality to their lives in the hospice.” From our resident PAT dogs’ visits in Jigsaw and Eden Valley Hospice to our annual Christmas donkey visits, throughout the year we welcome a wide variety of animals to the hospice. Any animal visits to the hospice, especially from our patients pets, can provide enjoyment and comfort for everybody at the hospice. Rachael Kegg, Jigsaw Team Leader: ‘’Junior is so very well behaved and gentle, the children and young people get so excited to see him – it really is a special treat. “He adds fun to the day and seems to improve mood and reduce anxiety in the children and young people. They love to stroke his golden coat and cuddle into him and provides comfort just by being present, which enhances emotional wellbeing.’’
Emma and NXT Recruitment chose to pay for the care, support and activities on Friday 21 December. Pay For a Day is a unique opportunity for every individual, family, company or organisation in Cumbria to make a real, immediate contribution to the care of the most vulnerable children in our community.
Grant has chosen to pay for all the care, support and activities on 11 December 2018 and 11 December 2019 to celebrate his sons’ birthdays.

With a wag of his tail and the gentlest of nuzzles, Junior the cocker spaniel brings a smile to the faces of children and young adults at Jigsaw.
“I wouldn’t take him to see someone who doesn’t love dogs or those who are scared. I had one child though who was nervous when we arrived but by the end of the two hours, he was walking Junior and giving him treats.
“I was looking for a challenge which was connected to my place of work, the Cumberland. Jigsaw covers a very similar area to our branch network and the support they offer young adults and children is invaluable. I wanted to make the challenge something considerable so that it would make people understand I am fully behind the cause.” During 2018 Grant took part in a range of half marathons across the country, including the London Landmarks Half Marathon, Great Manchester Run, Edinburgh Marathon Festival, Great North Run and the Carlisle Half Marathon. Through all Grant’s fundraising and the kindness and generosity of his family, friends, work colleagues and business associates, he raised an incredible £7,733 enough money to pay for three days of Jigsaw care.

A day with Jo Hurst, our Spiritual Care Lead
Cherished memories to last forever
I have worked at the Hospice since late spring 2018. As Spiritual Care Lead it is my absolute joy to share the lives and journeys of our patients and see them live their lives as fully as possible during their time with us.
Sometimes when you least expect it the memory of a loved one comes back to you. The music you enjoyed together, a special family holiday, a favourite television programme or the smell of the jumper they wore.
I have a team of volunteers who generously give their time to listen and spend time with patients. Most of the care we give is non-religious, although we are called upon to provide religious care when needed. We have Christian services in The Fold three times a week. I thought perhaps a snapshot of one of our days at the hospice would help you understand more fully what spiritual care is. 06:45. Arrive on the ward and speak with the night staff to find out how patients have been overnight. This helps give insight into how the patients may be feeling in the day. Always look out for the Housekeepers to say good morning. 07:00. Open doors to The Fold, check there are enough tealights and tissues for the day ahead, ensure there are enough coloured memory leaves to hang on the Compassion Tree for family and friends of patients. 07:15. Check emails, phone messages and urgent requests. 07:30. Go onto the ward and visit any patients who have not slept so well, or who simply need company. This can simply be listening to their hopes or concerns, or perhaps reading to them from their favourite book. If a patient is known to have a faith we can pray with them or read to them from their favourite religious text. 08:45. Attend Multi-Disciplinary Meeting and learn about any patient updates. Discover a patient would like a Civil Partnership within the day or two. 09:15. Work with Social Worker to plan Civil Partnership. 10:15. Meet with volunteer who is coming in for Day Hospice. Talk through the service they will be taking at 13:00. 10:30. Go onto the ward to speak with the patient who would like the Civil Partnership. Listen to their hopes and wishes. Patient is clear they do not wish to have any religion involved, but they definitely would like a celebration afterwards and just a few family members present.
12
1:15. Go to the kitchen and ask about food for the celebration. Catering Team are generous in their offer of providing the patient’s favourite food for the occasion. Social Worker arranges with the Registry Office for a Registrar to come tomorrow to officiate. 11:30. Attend Day Hospice and meet the folks who have come today. One patient feeling quite low, so listened to their story and offered to put them in touch with Complementary Therapy for a massage. Patient accepted gladly. 12:30. Lunch. 13:00. As my volunteer takes a service in The Fold, I head back to the ward to spend time with other patients. One patient is Church of England and knows they are dying. They ask for prayer and a blessing. Another is Buddhist, and would love to meditate with a fellow Buddhist, so I phone the local Buddhist centre and request a visit. A third patient is in for respite care and his visitors have gone home, so I stay a while and listen to his life-story. I learn about farflung countries he has visited, about his time in the Korean War and we listen to some music together. 14:30. Back to the office to check on plans for Civil Partnership. All coming along well – the Social Worker has organised all the relevant paperwork. I gather all the fairy lights I can find in the office ready to decorate the conservatory tomorrow. 15:00. Time to go home.
Our new Cherished Memory Tribute Pages, provided by Much Loved, on the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw websites allow you to create a permanent online memorial for your loved one. The special page, which can be fully personalised, allows you to upload photos, music and stories as well as lighting virtual candles as you remember the special times you had together. Tracy Lazenby, owner of Final Journey Funerals in Carlisle, has been providing Much Loved Tribute Pages to the families she has been working with for over a year. Tracy explained, “Online is how we live now, some people really embrace the tribute pages but other people are fearful of social media and technology. I create a tribute page for most of my funerals now, along with sharing details on Facebook as people don’t want newspaper notices anymore. “If people want a tribute page then they can have it, some families have created timelines and made it their own. We are able to personalise the page theme depending on the person’s interests. The great thing about them is people can access the tribute from all over the world. We are all a jigsaw and everyone has their own piece. Anybody can upload a picture onto the page and help create a lasting legacy afterwards. “The tribute pages allow people who can’t make the funeral to make a donation. Plus, we include the website links on the back of the service’s notes as people can take it home with them and make a donation. People often donate in the next few days after the funeral.”
The hospice’s Cherished Memory Tribute Pages allow you, your family and friends the opportunity to come together and remember. If you wish, you can also donate to your loved ones Cherished Memory Tribute fund. Donations made in lieu of flowers are often the first contributions. Some people choose to make a regular donation, others organise specific fundraising events or make a donation to mark a special occasion. All donations are grouped together into one unique fund that shows how much money has been raised in memory of your loved one. To set up your own Cherished Memory page in memory of a loved one please visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org/supportus/fundraise/donate-in-memory/tribute-funds. You can see my role here is very varied, and that is part of the beauty of working here. Our patients needs are so diverse; I have the privilege of working with so many people both inside and outside of the hospice to bring the very best care to our patients. At the end of the day that is why I love working here – being part of a great team delivering the very best care to our wonderful patients.

12:30. Lunch. 13:00. TV cameras visit hospice for a special Christmas Party Treat In early November, cameras and on-screen stars from a money-saving national TV show hosted two Christmas parties in one afternoon at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. The parties were to say thank you to all the staff and volunteers who care for patients and families every day of the year.
The film crew from Channel 5’s Shop Smart Save Money for Christmas spent the day in Carlisle as they transformed the hospice into a Christmas party venue.
The five new Officers are from Jigsaw. During a special ceremony they received their caps from the Lord Lieutenant Claire Hensman, Deputy Chief Constable Mark Webster and Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall. The event was attended by Jigsaw families and staff, Senior Police Officers, The Citizens in Policing Department of Cumbria Police and Cumbria Police Cadets.
“The programme will provide our children and young people with a range of new activities to work on all whilst receiving the care and support they require at Jigsaw. We would like to thank Cumbria Police for tailoring the activities to our children and young peoples abilities.” Mini Police is a national scheme with programmes run locally by Cumbria Police PCSO’s and participant schools. The programme is aimed at increasing trust and confidence within both the young people and the communities. Mini Police Officers receive structured lessons on relevant topics such as road safety and community engagement activities, such as speed watch, community events, beach clean-ups and improving run down play areas.
After sampling the food, hospice nurses Anita and Laura appeared in the studio for the programme broadcast. On the day they were interviewed by presenters Gaby Roslin and Fiona Phillips about what they liked best before Gaby revealed which was the cheapest party – and therefore the winner. Speaking to the News and Star before the Channel 5 filming took place Anita and Laura explained: Laura said, “It is showing everybody what we do at the hospice, and to show how hard but rewarding our job is. It was also a good way for us to get together and have some nice food and it was a chance for the whole hospice to come together.”
Jigsaw Mini Police Officers will take part in a programme of activities throughout the year which have been created in collaboration with Jigsaw staff and the Citizens in Policing team. The programme has been tailor-made for the new recruits and focuses on positive engagement with police Officers and the local community.

In January Cumbria Mini Police programme recruited a set of incredible new Officers.
Patricia Livsey, Chief Executive at Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice, said “We’re all looking forward to working with Cumbria Police on the wonderful Mini Police project. It is brilliant to be the first children’s hospice in the UK to become Mini Police Officers and we are excited to see what projects will be taking place throughout the year.
The programme, which was aired just before Christmas, saw two teams of money-saving experts competing against each other to see which could provide the best-value party for our care teams. The two teams were Cardiff blogger Kelly Ergolu and Brummies Jo and Leisa Creed and they were tasked with buying party food and accessories to lay on a Christmas spread for staff and nurses at the hospice.
Anita said, “It will make people aware of what we are about. People come here when they are in trouble, some people come here for respite, some people come for advice. A family member said they are chuffed, they thought it is lovely for the hospice itself.”
Cumbria Mini Police latest recruits
In March 2018 Cumbria Police chose Jigsaw as their Charity Partner for the next 2 years as they aim to raise funds and awareness for the care, support and activities provided at the children’s hospice.
Deputy Chief Constable, Mark Webster, said: “We launched our Mini Police programme in April 2018 and in the nine months since its launch, those involved have surpassed all expectation with their commitment and enthusiasm. It is inspiring to see how the children grow as a team and as individuals whilst taking part in the programme. Jigsaw is a fantastic addition to our Mini Police family and I look forward to seeing the difference our new recruits make to their community. “This programme has been tailor-made to deliver the fundamental elements of the Mini Police programme whilst ensuring that the needs of our new Officers are met. It is a new, unique and exciting development that provides inclusivity for those wishing to access our local programme, I know this will positively impact the programme for others eager to join in the future.”
