Creating lasting memories Pictures, medals, badges, tickets... We all have little items which hold massive memories. The Family Support Team are helping our patients capture and preserve their memories through our Legacy Frames. The personalised frames can be kept by the person or passed onto family, friends or loved ones as a keepsake and a memory.
Wendy Ashton, Hospice Social Worker, explains: “Legacy frame work isn’t about death and dying, it’s about life and living. It’s about making connections and sharing precious moments with the special people in your life.
Welcome Welcome to the autumn edition of the Eden Valley Hospice newsletter. Usually in this slot you get the considered thoughts of Bill Mumford with some sage words on the remarkable care offered by hospice staff. The Chief Executive is moving on after his dedicated stint so I was asked to fill the white space at the front of this jam-packed edition of the latest on hospice life. The hospice is in safe hands with Janet Ferguson rejoining as Chief Executive for the interim period. I can’t offer Bill’s insight but I hope I am able to portray a sense of the immense empathy and innovation that goes into making this place tick. When I first edited The Cumberland News it soon became clear the affection and high regard Eden Valley Hospice was held in by local people. It touches so many lives. Everyone seems to know someone who has received positive care here. It’s no wonder that when it comes to fundraising the hospice figures highly in many people’s thoughts. In this edition, you can – as always – read about some of the selfless acts people have undertaken to do their bit for the hospice. The volunteers who gave their time, skill and equipment during Give A Day To The City are a prime example of the way people rally to help.

‘Art and creative work are a vital human activity and integral to a good quality of life.’ Shaw, 1999
And that backing is vital. It’s public assistance in all its many forms that keeps the hospice doors open. We’d all like to think that if a loved one is in need of care they will get the very best nursing and technical support at that time. To try to provide that takes a huge amount of effort from the hospice team out in the community. One of the standout events of the year takes place in October with the second Lake of Lights at Talkin Tarn. You can read about how to get involved in this edition. Those who were at last year’s evening will need no reminder of the stunning sight of the memorial lights being floated across the still water. Thanks for reading. Your continued support of this fine institution demonstrates all that’s good about our community.
David Helliwell Guest Editor
David Helliwell is former editor of The Cumberland News and News & Star and earlier this year he set up his consultancy agency Helliwell Media. David is supporting the hospice by volunteering his time and skills, including being guest editor for this newsletter.
“It can be a meaningful way to spend an afternoon. Legacy work provides a unique opportunity to reflect on your life and process through the events and people who shaped it. It can be a powerful coping tool not only for you, but for the people around you. “Making a legacy frame gives your loved ones something tangible to hold on to, something that can provide healing and comfort year after year, and generation after generation. It’s a reminder of who you are, what you love, what is important to you and contributions you have made.” The four session programme provides patients with time and opportunity to reflect on their life and the memories they have made with support from the social workers at Eden Valley Hospice. Once completed the frames are taken home or given to loved ones as a lasting memory. If you would like more information about the legacy frames or the Eden Valley Hospice Family Support Team please call 01228 810801 or visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org

Dreaming of an improved future Over the last two and a half decades tens of thousands of people have crossed through the entrance at Eden Valley Hospice. The buildings and grounds have developed to match changing needs, but one thing has remained a constant. Our home from home environment helps create calming, relaxing and peaceful surroundings for all. The high standards and hard work of the housekeeping and maintenance teams ensure the hospice maintains a welcoming and comfortable environment for our patients, their families, friends and carers. But many of the fixtures and fittings at Eden Valley Hospice are 25 years old and we need to improve them for the future. Doug McGarr, Facilities Manager, explains about the hospice dreams.
Bedrooms and Shower Rooms
“If money were no object we would really like to refurbish our adult unit bedrooms and shower rooms which are now twenty five years old and looking a bit tired and dated.
“Each bedroom would get a recliner chair, furniture, hoist and large screen TV. Each shower room would have a new toilet, sink and shower with dementia friendly co-ordinating handrails. The dated tiles would be replaced with modern shower boarding in complementary colours, new flooring and finally a new set of matching bedding and curtains to sit with the warm and homely colour schemes throughout.”
Pond “If money were no object we would like to refurbish our pond and return it back to the attractive focal point it once was. This would include opening up the area with bi-fold doors, extended decking area, water feature, colourful planting and lighting and improved access so patients and families can enjoy the relaxing and tranquil space.”
Car Parking “Car parking at the hospice is becoming increasingly difficult. If money were no object we would love to activate the planning permission we have in place to enable us to re-model our existing car park and extend onto unused land to provide 40 new spaces. “This would improve our facilities and alleviate a stressful situation for patients and visitors arriving at the hospice.” At the heart of all the changes, developments and improvements we make to the hospice will be the comfort of all of our patients, families, friends and carers. The safe, comforting home from home environment is something we will always maintain at the hospice. If you or your place of work would like to find out more about the dreams we have for Eden Valley Hospice over the coming years please contact Doug by calling 01228 810801 or email care@edenvalleyhospice.org

Kind words from Gwen Curry Every day our nurses, health care assistants, doctors and family support team touch the lives of local families. Their care and compassion provides comfort and support to people living with life limiting illnesses. We recently received a letter from a local lady, Gwen Curry, whose father was cared for at the hospice earlier this year.
“How do I put down in words just how very grateful we are for everything you did for dad (Harry Evans) during the last couple of weeks prior to his death at the hospice, on 4 February?
ensured his pain was controlled, giving us complete reassurance. On top of this your loving respect was truly remarkable. We would like to thank you for the spiritual care provided.
“There are not enough adjectives to be able to describe our overwhelming gratitude. It meant the world to us for Dad/Granda to be able to spend his final days in such a peaceful haven. We feel so privileged that he could die in the hospice.
“Dad was a very special and wonderful man who we will miss immeasurably. He was our “hero” and we will be eternally grateful to all who looked after him so wonderfully.
“The compassion and support provided to dad and to us was truly amazing. Your exceptional, professional care meant that dad died with dignity and comfort in a relaxing, serene place and you
“Please pass on our thanks to all the volunteers, as well as the paid staff, who make Eden Valley Hospice so special – including the reception staff and the maintenance, catering and housekeeping teams.”
Help make a difference by sponsoring a nurse Our nurses have a passion for hospice care. Their specialist skills meet the needs of local patients and families when they are at their most vulnerable. Nursing staff see it as a privilege to be allowed into their lives and provide compassion, comfort and a safe haven. Over the last 25 years our nurses have been at the bedside of tens of thousands of local adults with life limiting conditions. Many of them have provided care at the hospice since we first welcomed patients in 1991 (Day Hospice) and 1992 (Adult In-Patient Unit). Our care would not be possible without you. Every year local organisations, businesses and individuals help the hospice to
provide our care when people need us the most. Now there is an opportunity to directly sponsor the care provided by our wonderful nurses.
From as little as £5 a month, or £60 a year, you could make a huge difference to the care, support and activities provided by the hospice nurses to local adults with life limiting illnesses.
Sponsor a Nurse - through a direct debit or a one off donation - is a fantastic way of ensuring our care, support and activities are here for people today, tomorrow and in the future. Gwen Curry, who is taking part in the Sponsor a Nurse campaign, explained “My dad was wonderfully looked after at the hospice and I wanted to help other families like ours in the future. Direct Debit

Evening of celebration for staff and volunteers In early June the hospice came together for an evening of memories and thanks at the annual Staff and Volunteers Celebration Evening. The night, hosted at the Tithe Barn, Carlisle, saw many staff and volunteers’ dedication to Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw recognised as they received long service awards. For the very first time three volunteers were presented with a 30 year award. All three volunteers began supporting the hospice long before it was built on Durdar Road, Carlisle. 30 Years

Give a Day is all about seeing a need and, through practical action, changing it for the better. All projects help and serve local communities. Give a Day aims to help make our city an even better place to live, work and play. The hospice really appreciates all of the individuals, organisations and community groups for their amazing generosity during Give A Day To The City.
Please note: Car parking will be limited at Talkin Tarn on the evening of the event. We are hoping to run a park and ride scheme, with full details announced closer to the date. Disabled parking will also be available at Talkin Tarn.

Anniversaries, recruitment and growth
You can make a difference by joining one of our events October
Clothing, toys, camera equipment, collectables and sporting items, you name it and one of the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw shops has sold it! It has been another busy six months for the hospice shops in Carlisle, Penrith, Brampton, Wigton and online, via eBay. The dedicated teams of volunteers have processed and sold thousands of donated items to help raise valuable income to support local people with life limiting illnesses. Every day the continued support of the local community helps make our shops a huge success. Through donating and purchasing items in any of the shops you are helping to make a difference. Anne Hall, Retail Manager, explained: “The retail department is performing very well in 2017. We have seen some outstanding performances from the Furniture Shop and Lonsdale Street Shop since the start of the year.” To keep up with the continuing popularity of the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw shops we are always on the lookout for more volunteers. Without the enthusiastic support of hundreds of volunteers none of

our shops would be what they are today! Earlier this year, with the support of Enitiative Media, we hosted a retail volunteer recruitment campaign to encourage local people to donate a few hours of their time to support our shops. Anne continued: “We had more than 15 enquiries and recruited 10 new volunteers across the seven shops, which is amazing. “We are constantly looking for new volunteers. if you know anyone who might be interested or has a few hours to spare maybe encourage them to volunteer and help provide the income to support the amazing care that takes place within the hospice.” Volunteers undertake a wide variety of roles within our Retail department from sorting donations to serving customers, there is a role suitable for everybody. Plus, just a few hours a week really can make a huge difference. In September, Jigsaw’s very first shop, in Penrith, celebrated

What was happening 10 years ago?
Fun for all the family!
In late 2007 a unique facility in Cumbria officially opened. Following a hugely successful Jigsaw Appeal, raising £1million in just two years, the county’s first purpose built children’s hospice was constructed and it has provided a safe haven for families ever since. Speaking at the time of opening a parent explained: “This facility will change our life. We have looked after our son 24 hours a day seven days a week since he was born. As much as we love him the chance to get a short break and spend time as a normal family is so precious I can hardly express our thanks.” Despite the purpose built facility opening in 2007, our history and care for children at Jigsaw and Eden Valley Hospice dates back much further. Sr. Bernadette, one of the first people to work at Eden Valley Hospice, explains.
1991
1992
“On October 2nd the building inspection took place. While all this was going on Sr. Carol was using her artistic talents to paint murals on the walls of what would be the children’s ward. Who would have thought then that in the years to come on this spot there would be a beautiful, modern unit solely for the care of children!”
“We also started to take children for respite care using the room which Sr. Carol had painted with suitable murals on the walls. Usually it was just one child at a time and during the day she was often found in the little staff sitting room which looked out onto the fish pond.”
1997
2005
In September Lady Whitelaw helped cut the turf in a ceremony to commemorate the first steps of building a £530,000 young people’s wing at Eden Valley Hospice. The building work was completed in May 1998 and was made possible thanks to the generosity of the local community who raised over £260,000.
In June we launched the Jigsaw Appeal to build a purpose-built children’s hospice in Cumbria. Through the support and generosity of the Cumbrian community the appeal reached its fundraising target of £1million to replace the existing facility, which provided overnight facilities for two children and a day care facility.
2007 In December the purpose built facility became fully operational.
Games, craft and lots of laughter was the order of the day during two fun filled days for the whole family. During the summer Jigsaw hosted the annual Summer Family Fun Day at the Youth Zone, Carlisle, along with an action - packed Sibling’s Day for all of the brothers and sisters. Both days provide us with an opportunity to bring together the wider Jigsaw community from throughout the county.
At Jigsaw we understand caring for children and young adults with life limiting illnesses can be a difficult time, this is why we extend our care and support to our children and young adults family. During the Summer Siblings Day all of the children enjoyed an energetic day at Battle Parties, Carlisle, where they took part in their very own Nerf battle. Following this, the group headed to Holme Head House, Carlisle,
where they made their very own pizza and created a wide range of arts and crafts products. The annual Family Fun Day had a sports day theme again this year, as everyone tried to win the Family Fun Day trophy. On the day there was a wide range of competitions, crafts and much more for everybody to enjoy.
There are so many people and businesses we would like to thank for helping to make both of these days possible and hugely enjoyable. We would like to thank: Battle Parties, Carlisle Holme Head House Reays Coaches Carlisle Youth Zone Bellisima Beauty Brad Kavanagh Carlisle Dance Academy Nando’s Carlisle Silly Gilly of Party Fun Stardust Parties The next party taking place for all of the Jigsaw families will be our hugely popular Christmas Party later this year. There are so many ways you and your place of work can help out on the day too. If you would like to support this year’s Jigsaw Christmas Party please email care@jigsawhospice.org

8am We don’t have fixed times for getting up, we just let the children choose their own times. Like most families will know, the teenagers tend to get up the latest! Each child will usually need a special breakfast that’s right for them and we make sure they have their morning medication. Baths and showers follow and we’re all ready for the day. 9am Our activities coordinators arrive now and we plan what each child and young adult wishes to achieve for themselves. It always depends on how the child is doing that day of course, but we’ll always make sure there’s a range of activities like arts and crafts, messy play, songs and stories and lots of games, both inside and out in the garden. They also open up our activity room the ‘Smoothie Bar’, which is a firm favourite for everyone at Jigsaw. 10am Our ‘day care’ children arrive. Some we see quite regularly and they can just jump right in with the activities we’ve set up. But, if we’ve not met a child for a while we’ll take time to say hello properly, find out how they’ve been since their last visit and make sure we’re up to speed on their feeds and medications. Then, we’ll get them settled in, find out what they’d like to do that day and make sure they’re introduced to all the nurses working that day. No two days are ever the same at Jigsaw. Each day brings with it its own memories, activities, smiles, laughter and challenges. Every day our nurses, health care assistants and activity coordinators provide the highest standards of expertise, support and activities to children and young adults with life limiting illnesses. We are delighted to unveil a brand new way for you to support this vital day-to-day care. Just 24 hours of care costs £2,126.46 of community fundraising and Pay For a Day is challenging you to raise this amount. From running events to cake sales and birthday celebrations to one-off donations, the fundraising possibilities really are endless. Plus it can take you as long as you want to raise the amount too.

Your votes have made a big difference in Jigsaw In the spring 2017 edition of Hospice News we were delighted to let you know Jigsaw had been successful with our Aviva Community Fund application. Your votes helped us to receive a grant of £24,127 to refurbish two areas of the children’s hospice.
Welcome Welcome to the autumn edition of the Jigsaw newsletter. It’s coming up to a decade since the purpose-built children’s facilities welcomed their first guests. Thats 10 years of caring for young people in their time of greatest need and giving parents and family some much needed support. That’s not to mention the care that preceded the official premises opening. Jigsaw, its staff and volunteers have made an immeasurable difference to so many lives. Such anniversaries are a great time to look back at what has been achieved – and plan for the years ahead. It’s difficult to remember there was a time when dedicated facilities for children and young people weren’t

During the early summer workmen arrived at Jigsaw to begin the transformation by upgrading the Sensory Room and creating a Snug for the older children and young adults. After a few weeks the makeover was finished and we are happy to share pictures of the completed work. available. It must have seemed a daunting prospect to those who first took on the task of establishing a children’s hospice. Thankfully the community embraced the idea and a £1m fundraising challenge was met and we have the facilities we see today. Now there’s a fresh challenge with the hospice set to launch Pay For A Day, encouraging individuals, organisations and businesses to raise the £2,126.46 that’s needed to provide just one day’s care at Jigsaw. The figure brings in to sharp focus the huge efforts needed on a daily basis to ensure those young people get the care they deserve. If your company, club or family are looking to do something special for charity in the year ahead, I’d urge you to give Jigsaw your support. While Jigsaw’s bricks and mortar
are in Carlisle, it is the children’s hospice for the whole of Cumbria and one aim of the campaign is to raise awareness across the county about the vital services it provides and the youngsters it helps.
Jigsaw would like to say a special thank you to Donald Marks and his team at D Marks Carpets in Carlisle who provided and fitted the carpets in the Sensory Room, Snug and adjoining lounge area free of charge.
You can read about how to get involved in this edition. The official launch will take place in October and anything we can all do to spread the message will help. The young people using Jigsaw’s facilities have become pretty hot on social media – so I’m sure they’ll be playing a part as well. If you see them posting or tweeting about the campaign make sure you’re liking, sharing and re-tweeting!
“The new improved sensory room has been made accessible for all, with the new hoist in place. Children and young adults have enjoyed spending time exploring the new equipment with magical effect.” Helen Farren.
