Welcome I feel very proud and privileged to be working at the hospice. My skills as a registered adult nurse, children’s nurse and health visitor; my work at a senior level in a range of universities across the country and the national roles I have held, including work with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Department of Health, will enable me to provide strong management, leadership and support for the hospice and all our staff and volunteers. As someone who has lived in Cumbria for the past thirtythree years, I know how important the hospice is in providing palliative care and supporting patients with a range of life limiting conditions. Since starting I have met with staff and volunteers and feel proud to be part of this amazing team. I know we provide the highest standard of care and support for our patients and their families and friends. I feel humbled by the many stories I have heard of the strength and courage shown by our patients. The hospice provides dedicated care and support from our team. I see the great commitment from staff and our wonderful volunteers. The patient and family stories included within this magazine illustrate the importance of holistic care to ensure everyone receives the care they need. Your kindness and support ensures our patients and their families receive the care they deserve.

As the new Chief Executive, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Autumn 2018 edition of the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice newsletter.
Our finances continue to be a challenge for us. There is much to do to improve and refresh our buildings and facilities, yet the hospice remains reliant on charitable donations and we are dependent on the community we serve to support us. As you will see within this edition, there are a wide range of fundraising activities over the coming months. Give a Day to the City is the opportunity to support the hospice by giving time and energy to help maintain and enhance our provision. I would like to say a huge thank you for your continued generosity. Together we can work to help the hospice grow and develop to meet the needs of our community. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Interim Chief Executive, Janet Ferguson for the great work she has done leading the hospice over the past year. With my best wishes
Professor Patricia Livsey Chief Executive
Our Mission Statement Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice will provide palliative care for people with incurable or life limiting illnesses, enabling them and their carers to live life as fully and as independently as possible. We will deliver services with a common focus, working collaboratively across Cumbria and south west Scotland.
Our Care Our Adult In-Patient Unit provides care for adults with life limiting illnesses from north Cumbria and south west Scotland. The hospice has a 12 bed in-patient unit with eight single en-suite rooms and a four bed room.
2
The home from home environment creates a relaxing atmosphere for patients and families with each room overlooking the beautiful walled garden. Our Day Hospice provides care for up to 15 people a day, four days a week. Most days the sweet smell of freshly baked cakes fills the Day Hospice as patients, nurses and volunteers exchange stories about what has happened since they last met. Our Family Support Team provides help and support to our patients, their families and their carers. They help to manage the challenges in front of many families, and help them to feel more resilient and able to face the future with courage, all in the strictest confidence.

“I work to get the very best for those who have been diagnosed with MND” - Joni Mitchell By Sue Crawford Joni Mitchell plays a very special role in the lives of people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). From helping them cope with the initial shock of diagnosis, she coordinates the vital health care and day-to-day support for those with the condition in north and west Cumbria. MND describes a group of diseases that affect the nerves motor neurones - in the brain and spinal cord which tell your muscles what to do. Therefore affecting activities such as walking, eating and talking. Joni is the MND Community Outreach Practitioner for north and west Cumbria based at Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle, which provides care for those with the disease in terms of symptom management and complementary therapy.
Joni says: “People usually undergo a lengthy period of investigation before they end up in the neurology service. By time they get to see the MND consultant they could have had up to two years of tests. “For some it is a relief when they find out what is wrong with them after months or years of tests. It is a progressive disease which is not treatable. The main focus after diagnosis is on quality of life and the management of symptoms.” Joni is brought into the process after the consultant has delivered the diagnosis. “A diagnosis can be overwhelming. People often have a lot of questions to ask and are often faced with an influx of health and social care workers and volunteers.” Joni explains.
Her two-and-a-half year role was pump primed by the Motor Neurone Disease Association and she is a core member of the MND Regional Care Centre at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
“I monitor symptoms and provide specialist support, while managing these symptoms and educating the person and their family. I negotiate the health and social care system on behalf of the person.
Joni, an occupational therapist by trade, explains that there are different types of the disease. There is no cure and it can affect people in different ways. Some forms are slowly progressive, while others develop much faster.
“I am their single point of local contact. Symptoms can be different for each person as is their management. There are a lot of difficult conversations to be had including advanced care planning to respect people’s wishes around treatment and care.
A diagnosis is life changing and it takes time for people with MND and their families to come to terms with the news. Joni is their single point of contact; a link within the network of health and social care professionals involved in looking after people with MND throughout their diagnosis. “Motor Neurone Disease is very rare. At any one time I have an average of just 30 people across north and west Cumbria out of a population of 300,000. However those diagnosed often need a high level of care,” she explains. “There are many different symptoms which can affect each person in a unique way. Due to their home environments and lifestyles the progression can be unpredictable, which means that each person’s needs are diverse right from the moment of diagnosis”.
Telephone 01228 810801
“Also important is the support I give to carers and family members. Some people with MND may have children and elderly relatives. I offer a form of counselling which helps them share feelings and emotions as well as access the support they need.” Joni says that with such a multi-faceted condition no single service can provide for all the patient’s needs, which is where she comes in. “I work to get the very best for those who have been diagnosed with MND. I am the bridge I suppose; the go between with all the services involved in the care provision.” she says. Along with the MND Consultant, Joni facilitates a bi-monthly MND Outreach Clinic at Penrith Hospital, but reviews people mostly at home.

“The quality of care provided by the team at the hospice was, by any standard, exceptional.” - Ben Lowery Earlier this year most of the country was covered in a blanket of snow by the Beast from the East. During this time the nurses, health care assistants, doctors and family support team continued to provide care, support and activities to local families. One patient we cared for this year was Yvonne Lowery, who passed away peacefully in her sleep at the hospice on 2 March. Her husband, Ben, and her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Emily, were at her side. Ben shared this letter with Eden Valley Hospice.. “Yvonne was an amazing person – she had an unquenchable zest for life. She fought her illness bravely, and was determined to never give in. So, I’m sure you will understand that she was incredibly reluctant to be an in-patient at the hospice because of what this represented in terms of her condition.
“It is a credit to the hospice ward staff who were all so approachable and friendly that, within an hour of arriving, Yvonne felt fully at home and she was sitting up in bed beaming at all the staff as they came in to introduce themselves. “Although she was only with the hospice for four days before she passed away, it was obvious that the staff had developed a real affection for Yvonne.
4
“We had been working with the hospice since last summer, after she was diagnosed with the new tumour and was told it was terminal, so she was familiar with the facility and a number of the staff. Even so, when Dr Sundar first suggested that Yvonne should come and stay at the hospice for a few days so the team could get her pain under control, she was very unwilling to entertain the idea.
“The quality of care provided by the team at the hospice was, by any standard, exceptional. I say this as someone who has been on a 14-year journey with Yvonne since her first cancer diagnosis and through all her treatment in ‘regular’ NHS hospitals in Cumbria and Newcastle. Whilst we experienced a lot of good, even great, care by the NHS I can honestly say that none of the many hospital teams achieved the level of care provided by the hospice team.
“Nevertheless, on the day of admission, Yvonne was still very nervous, not really knowing what to expect.
“The level of professionalism and capability of the staff is a given and was never less than excellent.

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw would like to thank everybody in the local community who provided and offered help during the snowy conditions in February and March. Your kindness, support and generosity is appreciated by everybody at the hospice. Thank you.
“However, what makes the hospice so very special is almost impossible to define in words. There’s a real sense that all the staff are working seamlessly together with the same aim – to provide the best possible care at all times for the patients. When I say “all the staff” I mean the entire hospice team, from receptionists, kitchen staff and cleaners through to the medical staff and all the other functions. “This holistic and compassionate approach to care pervades the hospice – it’s an invisible yet deeply felt atmosphere of warmth, love and gentle humour that I sense every time I’m in the hospice. Nothing is ever too much trouble; no request is ever dismissed out of hand. If help can be given, it is – without fuss. If a request is unreasonable, a full explanation is given and alternative options are suggested.
“It is this holistic and patient centred approach to care which truly impresses me. The feeling that every member of the team (paid and voluntary) cares about the patients and is working to ensure the high standards of treatment and wellbeing is provided at all times. “I should also point out that I noticed and was incredibly grateful for the attention and care given to myself and Yvonne’s sister and brother-in-law at what was clearly a difficult time for us. Whilst the staff always had Yvonne’s care as their number one priority (quite rightly so), they always took the time to check that we were ok, too. I always felt fully included in Yvonne’s care and the staff always took the time to explain what treatment was being carried out and why. “It is also worth noting that Yvonne was in the hospice during the heavy snowfall at the very end of February and the beginning of March. The dedication of the staff in battling to get to work and sleeping over at the hospice to ensure care was provided impressed me deeply. Although the hospice was inevitably running on reduced staffing levels, I never felt that the essential frontline care which Yvonne needed was compromised in any way. “So, thank you again to the hospice team. I am so grateful that Yvonne was able to spend her last few days in such a wonderful place surrounded by amazing, unsung heroes. She passed in a dignified manner surrounded by love.”
“In the days that Yvonne was with the hospice, her pain and agitation increased unbelievably quickly. For the last couple of days, she was unconscious and it fell to myself and Yvonne’s sister, Helen, to buzz for help when Yvonne was showing signs of pain and distress. I am still amazed at how responsive and helpful the medical team were. “There wasn’t a single occasion when I was told that there wasn’t anything else that could be done for Yvonne’s suffering. The staff were always able to do something, whether that was giving her additional medication or simply moving her in bed so she was more comfortable.
The kindness, support and generosity of Yvonne’s family, friends and loved ones has helped to raised over £3,000 in aid of Eden Valley Hospice. Yvonne’s funeral collection raised over £1,400, whilst a family friend, Richard Elliott, has raised £1,965 after completing the Marathon des Sables in April.

Update on Hospice dreams In the Autumn 2017 and Spring 2018 editions of Hospice News we shared our dreams for an improved future at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. As we explained, many of the fixtures and fittings at the hospice are more than 25 years old and need to be improved and replaced in the future. Hospice Facilities Manager, Doug McGarr, has provided an update with the progress made over recent months. “In the previous newsletter I described how, if money were no object, I would like to improve our facilities for patients and families here at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw. “We would really like to develop our Adult Unit patient bedrooms and shower rooms. “Funding has now been secured to fully refurbish our main bathroom including new height adjustable bath, sink and toilet to provide greater access for patients to use independently and to give nursing staff greater control and safety when assisting patients. A hospice supporter had agreed to cover the pond refurbishment as part of a “living legacy”. But costs
were kept down due to the amazing generosity of the Cumbrian community. “The refurbishment will include new lighting, flooring, seamless shower boarding, a new patient hoist and even a sound system so patients can enjoy music while having a relaxing bath. “I also wanted to redevelop our internal pond area, making it more of a focal point. After consultation with patients, families and staff, we made the decision to open up the area by putting in decking over the pond and having bifold doors added to provide full access for patients. “Following the article in the Autumn 2017 newsletter I received a call from Debbie Waite at WW Windows who very kindly offered to supply and fit the bifold doors completely free of charge. We also met with representatives from Give a day to the City who were very keen to help us fulfil our dreams. “Several local companies got involved to supply all the materials required free of charge and then McKnight and Son Builders offered to install the decking free of charge. “I am absolutely thrilled with the result and so grateful to all the generous local firms who got behind the project
Debbie Waite, WW Windows Carlisle Limited, said “We believe in helping and supporting the Eden Valley Hospice simply because they help and support so many others. It is fantastic that this has made such a big difference for everyone and to know that we have been part of creating a beautiful area for patients, families and staff to enjoy over the coming years is amazing.”
and transformed this space in to a wonderful, calm and safe outdoor environment for our patients and their families to enjoy. The support we get from businesses and local people is outstanding and we are well on our way to achieving the dreams we have for the hospice.” Over the coming months we will provide you with updates on how the hospice grounds and buildings are being redeveloped for the future. We will share updates on our social media pages, website and future editions of Hospice News. If you or your place of work would like to find out how you can make a difference by helping our redevelopment for the future please call Doug on 01228 810801 or email doug.mcgarr@edenvalleyhospice.org

“When I came into the hospice I fell in love with the place.” - Kim Kilgour
The Eden Valley Hospice Day Hospice is a wonderful facility that offers supportive care to people living with a life threatening or life limiting illness. The surroundings are very relaxed and comfortable, offering a choice of activities that are centred on wellbeing, companionship and support. Earlier this year Kim Kilgour attended her final Day Hospice session after attending for over 18 months. Below Kim explains about her experiences at our Day Hospice: “I didn’t see a way of getting through breast cancer, I felt so isolated. The treatment was the hardest thing I have done in my life. You can’t have many visitors due to your weak immune system during cancer treatment and you only have a small window of time to see people. “Anne Harris from Macmillan told me that I needed to get out of the house. We didn’t get out of the house, I made my house into a prison. When I did get out it was always with my children and we went from front door to front door. “I was terrified to come to the hospice; you associate the hospice with death and it’s not at all. When I came into the hospice I fell in love with the place, it
8
was love on first sight – the ladies, the nurses and the place. I had no hair when I first came here, but a door opened to a new life. I came to the Day Hospice one day a week and keep in touch through Facebook; the kids were chuffed I was out of the house. “The Day Hospice ladies are truly awesome. The nurses help me when I cried; it’s a safe place to cry. Before I was being strong for my children, who were my chemo buddies, because I am their Mam - the head of the house. You can tell the nurses anything. Everybody at Day Hospice has gone through what you are going through. “It’s about supporting and loving each other, a truly unbelievable place. “It broke my heart not to come back. I would like to say thank you to the ladies at the hospice. Some friends walked away when they found out about my diagnoses, but other people stepped up and never left my side. Everybody at the Day Hospice understood when something was not quite right, they understood when I stumbled and asked if I was okay. “The Day Hospice is a family to me, it is an amazing family atmosphere. This place helped me to get up and made me feel human, as you can feel like you lose your identity with treatment. The Day Hospice almost saved my life, not medically but mentally.
“I like to wind people up, find people when they are down and make them laugh or smile; a smile never hurt anyone. When I first came to the hospice I wore a smile like a mask, but when I came here I didn’t have to wear it anymore. I really liked to include everybody in the Day Hospice. When you are having a crappy day it means a lot for people to laugh.” Whilst attending the Day Hospice Kim hosted a tea party with her friend which raised a fantastic £1,600. The money raised was shared between Eden Valley Hospice, Cancer Research UK and Macmillan. Kim also took part in this year’s Cancer Research UK Race for Life. Her plan for the day was to walk with her daughter and also being pushed in her wheelchair around the route, but she planned to walk over the finish line. Following her experiences in Day Hospice, Kim will also be joining the team of volunteers in our Day Hospice. Each week the team of volunteers support the nurses, health care assistants and activity coordinators in providing care, support and activities for all the patients who attend the Day Hospice, Tuesday to Friday each week.

lives. Many of our colleagues needed the charity’s practical and emotional support, when saying goodbye to family members and friends. Knowing that they spent their last moments in a loving and caring environment provided a great comfort to all who are left behind.
Along with all the fundraisers, a host of local businesses have helped to make the event a huge success. These include the Cumberland Building Society, Carlisle Brass and Lloyd MINI who have sponsored the event every year.
“We are very proud to be participating in this event. It is a great day out for the whole family. The kids have a laugh and the adults become kids for a day. You never have to ask us twice to support Eden Valley Hospice.”
Becky Towns, Community & Events Co-ordinator from The Cumberland said: “As a local business we’re keen to support organisations that make a real difference to our local communities and we’re extremely proud to have been a supporter of Eden Valley Hospice’s Colour Run since the event began over four years ago.
Brian Twentyman, Brand Manager at Lloyd Carlisle MINI said: “We were delighted to support the Eden Valley Hospice Colour Run in May for the fourth year running. The Hospice is an invaluable organisation available to our local community and it’s great to be part of raising funds to help support it. The event is great fun for all ages, and our team loves to get involved too.”
“We’ve been lucky enough to see first hand, the huge difference the team at the hospice make on a day to day basis to individuals and families from across the City and surrounding area. For us, it’s a favourite event in our calendar, as it not only offers a friendly and memorable challenge, but most importantly, helps raise a lot of money to support the great work the hospice does.” Carlisle Brass Marketing Manager, Lucia Dickinson, said “Team Carlisle Brass has been deeply connected to Eden Valley Hospice for a number of years. The organisation delivers excellent care in the most devastating moments of people’s

Special events to remember loved ones As the days begin to get shorter we are starting to look ahead to the festive period, which can be a poignant time of the year. It can provide people with the chance to reflect and remember loved ones and friends who will not be with us this year. Last year thousands of people joined the hospice at our annual Lake of Lights memorial event at Talkin Tarn. During the unique evening the tranquil setting was transformed by hundreds of lights on the water and in the surrounding woodland. Each light represents a cherished memory of a relative, friend or loved one no longer with us. On Sunday 21 October, Talkin Tarn will again be illuminated by thousands of lights during Lake of Lights. We hope you can all join us again this year. The symbolic evening provides you with the opportunity to reflect and remember in a peaceful setting. Each lantern can be personalised with a special message before being placed on floating platforms and sent onto the water. Earlier this year Jo Hurst joined Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw as the
Hospice Chaplain. This year’s Lake of Lights and Light Up a Life events will be her first with the charity. Jo explained, “I am delighted to be working as Chaplain at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw - I can honestly say it is a joy each day to come to work. “I have been asked many times already “What is your role”? Contrary to what many people think, chaplaincy is not focused on religion. We do offer religious care to those for whom it is important, however the core of my role as Chaplain is listening. This takes different forms, but in the main it is to listen and talk about anything that matters to a patient; whether it is something that is troubling them, changes to their beliefs, loss of hope or practical and relational problems. I have also had the privilege of arranging weddings and ring blessings as well as civil partnerships. No two days are the same! “It is a privilege to work here and to journey with many different folks at different times in their lives. I am inspired by the many stories I hear from patients and this is one of the reasons why I believe it is vital to remember a loved one. Each of us has a story. We have, each of us, loved and lost and our lives are richer for it. Remembering those we have loved keeps their memories
alive and reminds us of the love we have known. This in turn can help sustain us when times are harder.” In November and December, the hospice will be offering three Lights Up a Life events in Carlisle and Penrith. At each event there will be time to reflect in music and words. At Penrith Methodist Church and Carlisle Cathedral we are inviting the local community to bring a bauble or tree decoration for the hospice Christmas trees to represent a loved one. During the Hospice Grounds Gathering you will be offered a tea light to place in and around the hospice as you remember a loved one. All donations gifted during Lake of Lights and Light Up a Life will help Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw to provide care, support and activities to our patients, their families and carers.

Thank You! By Sue Crawford Earlier this year a huge billboard towered over Warwick Road in Carlisle as a thank you to those who have supported the hospice over the past year. An amazing £689,286 was raised through our retail department last year alone, to help those with life-limiting illnesses at the hospice. Anne Hall is Retail Manager at the hospice and is in charge of four shops in Carlisle, a bookshop in Brampton, one shop in Penrith and another in Wigton. “They are all very successful,” she said. “The support we get from the community in terms of donated goods and purchased items is immense. “We are launching our campaign as a massive thank you to everyone for their support in helping families and their loved ones who need care in our hospices. We have had tremendous help from the community for the past 27 years. “We support the local community and they support us and we are thanking them for that. Every pound we raise goes towards caring for local people.” Anne has a team of eight in the retail department, with another 250 volunteers including eight drivers. “We couldn’t manage without our volunteers; they are invaluable” said Anne, who has worked at Eden Valley Hospice for eight years. Donations come in all shapes and forms, ranging from wetsuits and ski boots to handbags, jewellery and, on one occasion, a gas barbecue. As well as its shops Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw also sell through eBay. Last year our eBay store made £10,000.
Anne continued, “We do get some unusual items. We once got an old sewing machine with an old Carr’s biscuit tin full of needles and thread. We cleaned the tin up and it sold for £360. “Recently we received a large donation of thimbles from a family whose relative was a collector. The thimbles were all in display units. We sold them on eBay and they raised a considerable amount in aid of the hospice. We also received a model train which had been handmade by a man in Carlisle. It sold for an incredible £1,300. “It is amazing what comes in. Sometimes we don’t know what things are, so we ask on Facebook to see if we can get an answer.”
If you have any items you would like to donate to the Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw shops you can arrange a free collection by calling 01228 817612 (general donations) or 01228 549473 (furniture). Alternatively, you can drop off items at any of the hospice shops.
Every Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw charity shop is supported by a passionate team of volunteers who help customers, sort donations and much more. You can help make a huge difference to any of the shops by donating your time in Carlisle, Penrith, Brampton and Wigton. To find out more about volunteering in any of the hospice shops please pop in to the shop or contact the Retail Team on 01228 817615. Why ‘Dying Matters’ Dying Matters is a national annual awareness week which aims to help people talk more openly about dying, death and bereavement, and to make plans for the end of life.
What’s your song?
It also includes making a Will and getting your affairs in order, which can provide peace of mind knowing that everything is organised. It’s not always easy to know how to talk about dying. Awkwardness, embarrassment and fear means we tend to shy away from connecting with those who are dying or those who are grieving. But when we don’t talk about what matters it can increase feelings of isolation, loneliness and distress. The Dying Matters Coalition is working to address this by encouraging people to talk about their wishes towards the end of their lives, including where they want to die and their funeral plans with friends, family and loved ones. We have 2 booklets which are useful to help with these plans. Getting Your Affairs in Order and Funeral Wishes are available from the hospice. Please contact Karen Durden on 01228 817607 if you would like copies.
This year our theme for Dying Matters Week was ‘What’s your song?’ We asked people to write the name of a song which is special to them or a song they want to have at their funeral, on our blackboard. We took the blackboard out into Carlisle City Centre, Carlisle library and in the coffee lounge at the hospice. It proved a good talking point and created an eclectic ‘playlist’, ranging from ‘Time of My Life’ to ‘Crocodile Rock’ and ‘Boogie Wonderland’. We encouraged participants to then let their families and loved ones know that these songs were special to them and would like them included in their funeral plans. Having meaningful conversations about what will happen at the end of life are important to have with your family.
Make a Will Month April 2018 Our annual Make a Will Month campaign was held in April and has so far raised £6,362 from donations made in lieu of paying for a Will drawn up by one of our participating solicitors. We were supported this year by more local firms than ever and we are grateful to the following companies for their continued support. We would like to thank Atkinson Ritson, Bendles, Burnetts, Butterworths (Penrith), David Allen, Gaynham, King & Mellor, Kilvington, Scott Duff & Co and Waugh & Musgrave for supporting this year’s campaign. The next Make a Will Month will run again in April 2019. For the very first time we will be hosting a ticketless raffle, which will make it easier for you to take part and also help the hospice to save money. We launched the Jigsaw Raffle in early August and if you have already received your mailing you will have noticed the changes we have made. Each supporter has been allocated a range of numbers printed on your mailing. All you have to do is tell us how many you would like to purchase and we will do the rest. There is no need for you to write your name on each ticket stub, no wastage of raffle tickets and it reduces our costs too. A Win Win Win situation! If you have not received the Jigsaw Raffle mailing you can purchase your tickets in any of the hospice shops, on the hospice website or at several locations across Cumbria. We would like to thank all the local businesses who have donated this year’s raffle prizes, listed to the right. Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Jigsaw News! What an amazing summer we have had here at Jigsaw. The sun has been shining, our activity room has been transformed and we have welcomed some amazing people and animals to the children’s hospice over the last six months. During one brilliant weekend Cumbria Police brought along a range of vehicles, Carlisle East Fire Station brought along a fire engine and a tractor from Rickerby Ltd also visited. We have also welcomed a bearded dragon, ponies and the wonderful Akrowa drumming and dancing group from Ghana. All these wonderful visits, plus all the inhouse fun and mess at Jigsaw, help to create special memories for our children, young adults and their families. Each activity really does enhance the wellbeing of everybody here at Jigsaw and we would like to thank everybody who has helped to make the visits possible, plus all our supporters who continue to do amazing things for Jigsaw every day. With the long, hot summer now fading into our memory we are looking ahead to Christmas and all the festivities which goes with the season. Christmas always
begins early at Jigsaw, midNovember to be precise, as we aim to share the Christmas spirit with everybody who steps through our main entrance. This Christmas you can help make memories for all our families by supporting our wonderful Christmas campaign. Whether you paint a room, make a donation, adopt Jigsaw as your chosen charity or simply like and share our posts on Facebook, you are making a difference to the care, support and activities we provide. I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody for helping to make a difference. Thank you for making a difference every day.

About us Jigsaw is the children’s hospice for Cumbria. Our dedicated team of trained and highly skilled nurses, health care assistants and activity coordinators provide the individualised, complex nursing and therapeutic support each child and young adult needs – giving them the chance to have the childhood experiences we would all want for our own children. Jigsaw’s care is offered for free and without obligation.

A typical day at Jigsaw No two days are ever the same here at Jigsaw; our care team will take you through a typical day: 7am
Our day shift staff arrive.
8am
We don’t have fixed times for getting up, we just let the children choose their own times.
We make sure our list of “medical tasks” that need doing throughout the day is up to date.
9am
Our activities co-ordinators arrive now and we plan what each child and young adult wishes to achieve for themselves.
ked 4) ing
After a much deserved coffee (for us!) there’s a handover from the night staff, so we know exactly how each child has been overnight.
Like most families will know, the teenagers tend to get up the latest. Each child will usually need a special breakfast that’s right for them and we make sure they have their morning medication. Baths and showers follow and we’re all ready for the day.
12
12
It always depends on how the child is doing that day of course, but we’ll always make sure there’s a range of activities likes arts and crafts, messy play, songs and stories and lots of games, both inside and out in the garden. They also open up our activity room, which is a firm favourite for everyone at Jigsaw.
10am
Our day care children arrive.
12 12
Lunchtime! Some children have to be fed directly via a tube, others can eat with help from us. But whatever is needed, we make sure we all gather and share the meal together. Our staff and volunteers join in.
12 noon
Some we see quite regularly and they can just jump right in with the activities we’ve set up. But if we’ve not met a child for a while we’ll take time to say hello properly, find out how they’ve been since their last visit and make sure we’re up to speed on their feeds and medications. Then, we’ll get them settled in, find out what they’d like to do that day and make sure they’re introduced to all the nurses working that day.

Fun for all the family at Jigsaw
“Our hugely successful Mum’s Night ran for the second time in March. It is a night which allows us to give our very special mums a night which is all about them. A night to be pampered and have treatments such as complementary therapies, hair styling, lessons in make up, having their nails polished and even a bit of cake icing. 12
“You could tell by the buzz in their air that all who attended had a brilliant night. It allows the mums to experience some things that they may not have been able to try before. “One thing that it also does is bring together mums who understand what each other is going through and feel they can talk to someone who truly gets it and never judges. All whilst sitting with a glass of fizz or a cup of tea which they can actually manage to drink before it goes cold and something nice to nibble.

Mum’s Night
Pattern blocks
Earlier this year we hosted our annual Siblings Day and Mum’s Night which provided Jigsaw with the opportunity to bring together the wider Jigsaw family for two days of fun, relaxation and enjoyment. Activity Co-Ordinator Lesley explains about the two days.

At Jigsaw we understand caring for children and young adults with life limiting illnesses can be a difficult time. This is why we extend our care and support to our children and young adult’s family.
12
“We are only able to organise these evenings because of the amazing generosity of the people who give their time and resources free of charge, without them we would be unable to run such a successful evening and create the special night our mums deserve.”

Siblings Day “Our annual Siblings Day happened again this year, and with the huge generosity of Center Parcs, the siblings certainly had an experience to remember. Even the rain didn’t put a dampener on the fun times! “Reays Coaches provided transport for the day, for which all the children and young adults were very grateful. The siblings were split into two groups so they were able to do age appropriate activities, the older guys enjoyed cycling while the younger ones took part in bowling and go-karting. “Siblings Days give the children and young adults a chance to talk to their peers who have brothers and sisters with some form of disability. This can put a huge amount of pressure on siblings so trips like this gives them a chance to just be themselves and have a day filled with fun.”

You can create a magical Christmas! Every November Jigsaw is transformed into a special and magical place as we prepare for Christmas with decorations and festive activities. Christmas starts early as our nurses and activity coordinators spread the festive spirit to our families as we approach Christmas Day. You can help make Christmas magical too. We are always overwhelmed by the generosity of the community who donate a sack full of toys and games for children, young adults and families at Jigsaw. Sadly, not all the children and young adults we care for can play with your wonderful gifts. Many of the children and young adults we care for require specialist and specific toys, games and activities to meet their needs and abilities. This year you can ensure we have a special Christmas, filled with friendship, fun and endless memories which will last a lifetime. You can give a gift that gives more this Christmas by sending one of our special parcels to Jigsaw to help our care, support and activities. Each festive parcel will help to spread the Christmas joy to families throughout Cumbria. To find out the difference your special Christmas Parcels will make at Jigsaw or to make a donation visit www.jigsawhospice.org

Corporate and community volunteering is a great way for employers, employees and groups of people to put something back into their local community and support Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice. The charity will work together with local people to organise and deliver a programme that will be rewarding beneficial to both you and Jigsaw.

Mike Neile, Branch Manager, Bell Group Carlisle said “We were delighted to work in partnership with David Allen to refurbish the Activity Room at Jigsaw Children’s Hospice. We would like to thank our suppliers PPG and HSS Hire for supporting us with this project. As a business we are proud to support local organisations and it is important for our team to be able to give something back to the areas that they live. Yet again they have done an excellent job and they really enjoyed volunteering their time at Jigsaw Children’s Hospice”.
Guy Moffat, Trade Direct Territory Manager at PPG, ‘‘It has been a pleasure helping out with the project at Jigsaw Children’s Hospice alongside Bell Group UK and David Allen. All of us at PPG take great pride in working alongside local businesses and charities to bring joy and happiness in whatever projects we get involved with.’’

Natalie Bingham, Jigsaw Corporate Fundraiser, said “The project itself was an idea by David Allen who wanted to ‘Give a Week’ of their time to volunteer on a specific project in Jigsaw. The activity room has been in need of decorating for quite some time so seemed like the ideal project. We approached PPG who supplied the paint free of charge and Bell Group UK helped us set up, prepare and paint the really high points on the ceiling. HSS Hire also provided scaffolding for free.”

Over the course of the week staff from David Allen, along with the help of Bell Group Carlisle, decorated the room at Jigsaw with an exciting new paint scheme on the walls and the ceiling. The activity room is a popular place in the children’s hospice where a range of creative, fun and vibrant activities take place every day.
to firstly thank PPG for providing the paint and tools to allow us to complete the project and Bell Group UK for their amazing work on the blue sky and clouds that fills the roof space, and also to Jigsaw for giving us the opportunity to participate in such a great project. We are very proud to have been involved with the Smoothie Bar redecoration, transforming the space for the children and young adults who spend so much time enjoying this room. I hope everyone will agree we have created something special for them all, of which they can enjoy for years to come.’’

The Pumpkin Plod really is the perfect Halloween event for the whole family as you follow the treasure map and search for Captain Hospuss’s lost gold coins. FRIDAY 22 DECEMBER 2017
Three peaks challenges, half marathons, charity evenings and lots of fundraising. Businesses and individuals across Cumbria and south west Scotland are taking part in their own fundraising challenge as they aim to Pay for a Day of Jigsaw care. Pay for a Day is a unique opportunity for every individual, family, company or organisation in Cumbria to make a real, immediate contribution to the care of the most vulnerable children in our community. It allows you to pay for the entire running costs of our children’s hospice service for a whole 24 hours. There’s no limit to the amount of time you need to raise the £2,126.46 to Pay For a Day of Care – and equally no limit to the number of days’ care you can choose to pay for. Your day will be incredibly special for you and for the children and young adults whose care you will have paid for.
It will be a unique day where children and families will experience Jigsaw’s unique care and create memories that will last a lifetime. Vicki Todhunter, Account Manager at Thomas Graham, said “I would like to encourage everyone reading this to support Jigsaw Children’s Hospice by paying for a day of your choice. Children and young adults with life-limiting illnesses in Cumbria need care and support – and that means Jigsaw is indispensable. Without people in our community coming together to fundraise for them they wouldn’t be able to provide the care that they do every day of the year! “Being able to pay for four full days of care costs at Jigsaw Children’s Hospice has made us at Thomas Graham incredibly
proud. It’s such a special thing to know that we’ve given back to our community in such a definitive way.” The Jigsaw Fundraising Team will give you all the support and encouragement you need to make your fundraising enjoyable, successful and rewarding. To find out more about how you can Pay For a Day of Jigsaw care please visit www.jigsawhospice.org or call the Fundraising Team on 01228 810801.
