NUVANCE HEALTH NEW PATIENT PAVILION Established in 1884 on Henry Livingston farmland along the Hudson River, Vassar Brothers Hospital opened on April 11, 1887 and treated 80 patients in its first year. A training school for nurses was established in 1890, and a stone wall was erected around the perimeter of the 17 acres. Enter the new age with this extraordinary 752,000-squarefoot addition to our campus, funded in part by the generosity of the community, allows our client to dramatically enhance how healthcare is experienced. With its distinctive shape that follows the aesthetic of the Hudson River, the new Patient Pavilion adds an eight-level addition to the existing Vassar Brothers Medical Center (VBMC) in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Patient Pavilion features amenities that provide the caliber of healthcare and the environment expected by sophisticated modernday patients and their families. The spacious building includes: • 263 private rooms on four floors • 30 intensive care rooms • 13 surgical suites • Emergency and trauma center with 66 exam rooms and ample parking for ambulances and the public • Flexible conference center that accommodates up to 300 people for use by the public and service groups • 220-seat cafeteria with outdoor dining • Green roofs to assist in water management and patient views
• Rooftop helicopter landing pad • Four dedicated visitor elevators that run from the underground parking lot to the patient floors • Designated meditation room, gift shop and access to an outdoor public terrace • Two-level open atrium that overlooks the Hudson River • Footbridge over Livingston Street that connects to the Emergency and Trauma Center. • Emergency and Trauma Center consisting of The Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Emergency Department is nearly 58,000 square feet. It has its own entrance, spacious lobby, 66 exam and treatment rooms as well as including three trauma rooms and a pediatric-friendly area

The YMI Group was contracted to install the HVAC system for two new buildings at the lab, the Cryo Module Test Facility (CMTF) building and Compressor building. Upon completion, the new buildings conformed to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Guiding Principles for High Performance and Sustainable Buildings.

Mercy Hospital and Medical Center
BOILER PLANT PROJECT Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, a 150-year old city facility nestled in the heart of Chicago, faced an aging boiler system that was not able to supply the necessary heat output needed on a daily basis to run the hospital efficiently. The YMI Group, Inc. was awarded a contract to completely overhaul the mechanical boiler room located in the sub-basement of the patient tower and replace the original 1960 era boilers with four new state-of-the-art, 750 HP, high-pressure steam boilers.
So how do you overhaul the boiler room of a bustling Chicago hospital and medical center that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year? To ensure minimal interruption to the hospital and its patients, YMI Mechanical used a phased approach to install the new system. Due to the high demand on the hospital and the needs of the patients, two boilers had to be running at all times. Working closely with the Owner, Owners Representative, and the General Contractor, YMI implemented a coordinated team approach allowing for an intricately designed shut down. YMI connected all the steam tie-ins to the existing system, installed blast gates in a new location for the flues and upgraded the existing incoming gas supply from People’s Gas. YMI was able to replace the outdated 196O’s era boilers with four new high-efficiency boilers equipped with Lo-NOx burners that have a 12:1 turn down ratio, all with no noticeable interruption to patient care. Through innovative design and implementation, Mercy’s Central Boiler Plant improvements made by YMI Mechanical qualified and received a substantial rebate to the hospital from the gas utility company.
St. Mary’s Medical Center
CENTRAL EXPANSION PROJECT Having opened In 1973, St. Mary’s Medical Center, located in Hobart, IN, has been meeting the daily needs of its patients for over 40 years. To meet the needs of a growing suburban population, the hospital, in 2013, approved building a new 4-story patient tower to provide additional capacity for patient expansion. The YMI Group was hired in the lead role as General Contractor to provide a turnkey and seamless construction process.
The project had an accelerated build schedule with specific milestone dates. The client issued a “Notice to Proceed” on December 23, 2013. Faced with an extremely tight time frame to carry out the updates, The YMI Group laid out the project into the three phases to be completed over a three month period as follows:
1. P hase one required The YMI Group to ensure all
major piping revisions and structural steel were in place. Completed and running by March 1, 2014, this deadline was achieved with seven days to spare.
2. Phase two involved installation of a new 1,000-
Ton centrifugal chiller, along with all associated electrical switchgear upgrades, electrical infrastructure and BAS controls. Start-up and testing met the milestone completion date of April 15, 2014.
3. Phase three involved installation of a 350 horsepower
boiler and associated piping modifications, electrical infrastructure upgrades, and a new BAS integration. Startup and testing met the milestone completion date.
The addition of the chiller and boiler to the hospital’s central plant allows St. Mary’s the ability to provide additional capacity in efficiently heating and cooling their 4-story patient tower expansion.
