Klezmer, traditional Eastern European Jewish music, is said to have originated in the city of Odessa (Ukraine). The klezmorim were professional (and usually poor) musicians, who would travel through villages entertaining at festive occasions such as weddings and social events. The group Odessa specializes in klezmer music enriched by non-Jewish influences: Greek, Ottoman, Gypsy, and Macedonian.

Returns to the American Marketplace! This Month’s Featured Composer: William Alwyn (1905 – 1985) Lyrita founder Richard Itter brought many lesser-known British composers to the forefront of the international music scene. His devotion and effort to promote major twentieth century English composers such as Arnold, Bax, Finzi, Holst, and Rubbra allowed the world to experience their music for the first time; these recordings reflect an unparalleled technical quality and musical judgment. Much of the Lyrita catalogue features world premiere recordings and composerconducted works. Lyrita’s attention to William Alwyn in the 1970s resulted in a revitalization of his work, and with the increased attention to contemporary British music today, Alwyn’s appeal has been experiencing another rebirth. William Alwyn attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying flute and composition. He began a professorship there at only twenty-one and taught from 1926 to 1955. As a flute soloist, he was in great demand and performed many world premiere works under the baton of Elgar, Holst, and Vaughan Williams. Alwyn also wrote poetry, painted, and was an esteemed linguist. Alwyn’s compositional tastes were similarly eclectic. In addition to five symphonies, he wrote two operas, five song-cycles, concertos, string quartets, and numerous feature film scores. No other composer has written more scores for British films; Alwyn has seventy to his credit. His compositional voice is melodically oriented, with easily accessible forms, but his music also frequently features dissonance and Alwyn’s unique alternative to serialism. All Music Guide critic Bruce Eder describes Alwyn’s music as “melodic and eminently accessible, if not always as adventurous as modern listeners might expect. His tunecraft could be both subtle and profound … His symphonies are plainer and dryer, but only slightly less attractive, with beautiful scoring and great technical vitality.” When Alwyn died in 1985 after battling with a stroke’s resulting complications, most would believe he achieved his life’s purpose, as declared in his poem “The Pursuit of Beauty”: “Beauty is my reason for existence, My day, my night, my all-in-all. Faithless, I should cease to write.” The Lyrita catalogue features Alwyn conducting many of his own compositions, including the November release of Symphonies 1 & 4 [LYR 227], as well as this month’s Symphonies 2, 3, & 5 [LYR 228] and Concerto Grosso No. 2 [LYR 230]. Liuwe Tamminga combines several nineteenth-century transcriptions and variations, sonatas, dances, and adagios with an aria, a fugue, and a Pastorale by Padre Martini, who was Mozart’s mentor and counterpoint teacher in Bologna.
Between the thirteenth & fourteenth centuries there appeared a vast number of compositions dedicated to the cult of the Virgin. Musical compositions enjoyed a rapid diffusion in the courts and among the laypeople, encouraged by the work of the mendicant orders, who saw the realization of their ideals in the lay and “vulgar” pietas. The first sixteen melodies in this manuscript are a continuous call to the Marian cult.
