This first volume comprises the cycle of miniatures that so well illustrate from the beginning what Shostakovich was all about. All were written in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) and many listeners have remarked that the sound-world of this music suggests the atmosphere of the city itself. Even in these early works one can hear the composer’s thumbprint sarcasm, intellectual rigor and daring.

striking debut for a young Italian ensemble that places the bar very high. “ASUPER-BUDGET The ensemble PRICE! is one to watch out for: its blend is full and focused, yet softly rounded; and the individual voices are of similar quality.” — GRAMOPHONE De Labyrintho/Walter Testolin, conductor JOSQUIN: Gaudeamus Mass • Motets

The music of Josquin Desprez (1455–1521) has been likened to a symbolic cathedral from which emerge not only his masterly organization and moving inspiration, but also glimpses of his personality and ideas concerning man and God. He is one of the most eminent of all early Western composers and this is a significant addition to his discography. Previous recording was a Gramophone Critic’s Choice 2004.

• Unavailable for several years, this classic complete Ring recording now returns triumphantly to the catalog at a super-budget price! • Ring groupies and enthusiasts, who are a very active and vocal subset of opera lovers, argue vigorously over which are the best complete recordings of all time. Most will agree that this is one of the finest ever, and many rate it the best of all! • Wagner performances recorded in Wagner’s own theater in Bayreuth, Germany always have a special appeal due to the unique acoustics, which Wagner took into account when composing. His music dramas just seem to sound better there than anywhere else • This recording caused a commotion when it came out in 1953 due to its palpable excitement in comparison to the relative sedateness of previous recorded performances • Clemens Krauss was one of the great Wagner conductors (and a personal friend of Richard Strauss), but what really sets this recording apart is the cast. Overall, it is arguably the greatest cast assembled for The Ring at Bayreuth in the last 60 years • Although the great bass-baritone Hans Hotter sang Wotan in the Solti Ring years later, here his voice is in far better condition. Wolfgang Windgassen as Siegfried is also much more youthful. Astrid Varnay was one of the outstanding Brünnhildes of all time. Even small parts are taken by major singers of the era, such as the famed coloratura Rita Streich as the Forest Bird • A magnificent set, beautifully packaged, including a 24-page booklet with historic photos, a detailed essay by Bob Levine, plot synopsis, track listings, and enriched throughout by beautiful full color illustrations by acclaimed opera artist John Martinez! • Absolutely essential to the serious opera lover, especially the Wagner fan and Ring aficionado! • Live performance, Bayreuth Festspielhaus, 1953

Messiaen’s biographer, Alain Périer, wrote: “Probably never in the history of composition has a work been written under such improbable circumstances.” Messiaen was a prisoner in a Nazi war camp in 1940. A German officer gave him paper and pencil, and he wrote this profoundly moving chamber work dedicated “In homage to the Angel of the Apocalypse.” Eventually, he and some fellow musicians were allowed to play the work before an audience of 5,000 prisoners! “Never,” Messiaen recalled, “have I been listened to with so much attention and understanding.” The ensemble incanto was founded in 1988 on the occasion of the Messiaen Festival in Hanover.

The Rachmaninov is a towering live recording from a 1969 concert. Very good stereo sound. “Rarely has the D minor [Rachmaninov] concerto sounded as noble as in the hands of this grand master. Here Bolet joins at the pinnacle the other legends of the piano.” — DIAPASON

MENDELSSOHN: Songs without Words, Opp. 109, 62 (Nos. 1, 3, 4 & 5) • BRUCH: Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 • BRIDGE: Spring Song • ELGAR: Chanson de Nuit • Chanson de Matin • RACHMANINOV: Vocalise • FAURÉ: Romance sans paroles, Op. 17, No. 3 • Élegie • MASSENET: Mélodie-Élegie, Op. 10, No. 5 • GLAZUNOV: Chant du Ménestrel • SCHUMANN: Liederkreis, Op. 24

The bassetto was designed as a miniature double bass, with its strings tuned like a sub-bass violin. In their lieder transcription project, Dalla Torre and Petersen have assembled a program for this rare instrument united by the spirit of singing.

Sir Roger Norrington – arguably the most radical and influential pioneer of historically informed performance practice – was among the first to present music from Schütz through to Schumann on period instruments. Since the 2000 season of the SWR Stuttgart, Norrington has begun a process of translating his period instrument experience to a modern symphony orchestra in the Romantic tradition. The result has been what the maestro calls “pure tone” performance.

MOZART: Piano Concertos 9 & 19

These long-unavailable classic recordings are back by popular demand! Clara Haskil (1895–1960) was one of the past century’s most admired pianists, especially in the Mozart repertoire, in which many found her incomparable. Born in Romania, she became a citizen of Switzerland where the town of Vevey named a street after her and the Clara Haskil Competition for young pianists has been held every year since 1963. These historic recordings were made in Germany in 1952 and 1956.

MOZART: Symphonies Nos. 35, 38 & 40 • Excerpts from Die Zauberflöte & Le nozze di Figaro • “No, no che non sei capace,” K.419

Historic recordings made 1956 –1961 by conductor Carl Schuricht, a supreme interpreter of German late Romanticism whose roots were found in the works of the Classical masters Haydn and Mozart. Long before the “historic performance practice” trend come into vogue, Schuricht crafted perfectly controlled and balanced performances, allowing the genius of these Mozart masterworks to be experienced without excess or artifice.

SPINACINO: Intabulature de Lauto, Books I & II

The exact number of Vivaldi’s oboe concertos is in doubt; the most dependable scholarly catalogue lists 20, but there is no doubt that Vivaldi was pleased and intrigued with the rich, mellow sound and remarkable technical and expressive possibilities of the oboe, an instrument which only recently had taken its place as a regular member of the orchestra. Albinoni was the only composer who seems to have issued a set of oboe concertos before Vivaldi, so he stands near the beginning of oboe repertoire.

Nothing is known about the life and career of Francesco Spinacino except that he lived approximately 1450–1507, played the lute and composed very capable, interesting and enjoyable music for his instrument. “Intabulation” refers to lute (or keyboard) arrangements of vocal music from the 14th to 16th centuries. “Tablature” is a generic term for early notation systems, before the invention of notes printed on a staff. Italian tablature was distinct from the French and German systems.

COLONNA: Il Transito di San Gioseppe

Although little-known to the general public today, Giovanni Morandi (1777–1856) was the most eminent composer for organ of his period (the Early Romantic era) in Italy. His works were widely published and played, and he wrote many works for use in two convents. Morandi’s wife was the celebrated singer Rosa Morandi, and he often accompanied her on her travels. This rare recording of his organ duets shines welcome light on a corner of music history now in the shadows.

Giovanni Colonna (1637–1695) rose from humble organist to chapel master of the prestigious San Petronio Basilica in his native town of Bologna. Many of his compositions are lost, but his major oratorio Il Transito di San Gioseppe (1678) has been preserved and is recorded here complete for the first time. The libretto tells the apocryphal story of St. Joseph being visited by an angel on the day of his death and led to the gates of Heaven.

CLASSICAL USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir/Valeri Polyansky TCHAIKOVSKY: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Op. 41

Peter I. TCHAIKOVSKY Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

• Tchaikovsky began his first large-scale sacred composition in 1878. He chose the hallowed text by St. John Chrysostom (347– 407), Bishop of Constantinople and one of the fathers of the Greek (and by extension Russian Orthodox) church • This is one of the most important texts in the Orthodox liturgy, and Tchaikovsky intended his setting for church use. However, it was first performed in a public concert and immediately condemned by the Patriarch of Moscow as being tainted by the world • Tchaikovsky creates a rich variety of choral textures to provide atmosphere and create quasi-orchestral effects • Valeri Polyansky (b. 1936), who is now making a name for himself as an orchestral conductor, established his career in choral music • A graduate of the legendary Moscow Conservatory, he studied with Boris Kulikov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky • In the 1980s and early ‘90s, Polyansky recorded Russian sacred music extensively with the USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir. In 1992, he founded the Symphonic Capella, a large choral and orchestral ensemble based in Moscow • Sung in Church Slavonic • Recorded in the Cathedral of the Dormition in Smolensk in 1990

USSR Symphony Orchestra/Evgeni Svetlanov, conductor SCRIABIN: Symphony No. 1

• Begun in 1899, the Symphony No. 1 turned out to be a giant, towering over Scriabin’s previous work in terms of sheer scale. Sprawling into six movements (rather than the usual four), the score also calls for chorus and vocal soloists in the finale (à la Beethoven’s Ninth) who sing a “Hymn to Art” with words by the composer himself • Scriabin thought this Symphony was by far the best thing he had written, but its first (somewhat abbreviated) performance in St. Petersburg in 1900 was met with a hostile response. One critic wrote that the symphony was not as “horrifying” as Scriabin’s previous piano concerto (now considered hardly distinguishable from Chopin!), but complained about Scriabin’s rehashing of Tchaikovsky and Wagner • While Scriabin’s First may not propel one along as, say, a similarly sprawling symphony by Mahler does, one can still luxuriate in its sumptuousness and sensuality. The orchestration is exquisite, in true Russian fashion, and Scriabin manages to maintain a unified atmosphere throughout • Evgeni Svetlanov became principal conductor of the USSR Symphony Orchestra in 1965 and won all the highest honors of his country in music. He died in Moscow in May of 2002, at the age of 74 • Historic 1963 recording

• During the first half of the 20th century, Shanghai was divided into territories: the French Concession, the International Settlement (“owned” by England and the U.S.), the Chinese/historical city, and the Jewish Ghetto • This is the sound story about the “Paris of the East” or, alternately, the “Whore of Asia” – about the “Golden Era” of the greatest Asian city in the ’30s and ’40s. Shanghai was one of the most extreme places that ever existed! • Chinese and Philippine swing bands were entertaining the decadent society in bars, hotels and dance clubs. Jews from Vienna, Munich and Berlin were playing in café houses in Little Vienna. Chinese musicians were performing traditional Chinese entertainment music, mixed with Japanese military music...and everywhere the song “Night Over Shanghai” could be heard

• The Green Arrows, lead by the immortal Zexie Manatsa, dominated the Zimbabwean music scene in the 1970s. This extraordinarily progressive group took the country by storm, fusing the different rhythms of the region into one unique and ebullient sound • A milestone in Zimbabwean music history! The Green Arrows, “discovered” by celebrated South African producer West Nkosi, were the first Zimbabwean band to record an LP, which was released in February 1976 • So popular were the Green Arrows in the ’70s that when Manatsa got married on August 25, 1979 a crowd of about 60,000 thronged Rufaro Stadium. Some of the performers at his wedding included Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo • This compilation presents 20 critical tracks that the Green Arrows recorded from 1974 –1979, all painstakingly remastered • The song “Musango Mune Hangaiwa” still holds the record for the longest stay at #1 in Zimbabwean music history • Carefully prepared 24-page booklet is absolutely overflowing with a complete history of the band (edited by renowned critic Banning Eyre), a full detailed discography, and numerous extremely rare photographs and artifacts • After a long absence from performance, the band reunited on stage on the last day of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) on May 1, 2005
