A native of New Zealand, Ross Pople studied at the Paris Conservatory and at age 26 was invited by Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez to be principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra. The orchestral work Taras Bulba describes in music the fate of the Cossack leader Taras Bulba as it is told in Nicolai Gogol’s patriotic novella. Janácˇek’s final opera, From the House of the Dead, follows the plot of Dostoyevsky’s eponymous tale. The orchestral suite is an uncompromising staging of the work’s atmosphere in the imaginary theater of the listener’s head. Not long after the end of World War I, in early 1920, Janácˇek wrote his Ballad of Blaník, which is based on a poem of the same name. Christian Arming first conducted the Janácˇek Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995, at only 24 years of age. In 1996 he was appointed director of the orchestra there and thus became the youngest Austrian orchestra director.

The life and work of Gustav Mahler (1860–1911) in a film biography by Franz Winter, shot at the original locations – with previously unpublished original material – based on Uri Caine’s engagement as a composer with the music of Mahler. This film covers the composer’s youth, his times in Prague and Attersee, his engagements at the opera halls of Budapest and Vienna, his marriage to Alma Mahler, the death of their daughter Maria Anna, his period in New York, his work on the Tenth Symphony, and his death. Jazz pianist/composer Uri Caine brings an eclectic array of disciplines and influences to his music. His own Jewish heritage, his classical and jazz training, and his interest in electronics combine in ambitious hybrids that are often challenging but always inventive.

Dmitri Shostakovich expressed a life-long interest in Jewish folk music and would draw to himself some of the most talented Jewish composers and musicians living in the Soviet Union. The present program explores the chamber music of Shostakovich and his “Jewish circle.” Contemporary to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio is the Piano Trio of Shostakovich’s friend, Mieczyslaw Weinberg. It is therefore little wonder that some of the two composers’ works exhibit certain similarities. However, we should remember that not only was Weinberg influenced by Shostakovich, but also vice versa. Another of Shostakovich’s Jewish friends was the composer Alexander Weprik, a gifted musician who had been a repeated target of anti-Semitic purges.

• Mozart was just eight years old when he wrote this set of six sonatas “which can be accompanied either by a violin or a traverse flute” and dedicated on the printed score to “Her Majesty Charlotte, Queen of Great Britain” • The sonatas were the result of the boy composer’s first trip to London with his father Leopold, after having already published two previous sets of sonatas in Paris • It was on this journey that young Mozart “relaxed” by writing his first symphony. From his early works (among which there are the sonatas on this CD) to his last cantatas, Benedetto Marcello’s compositions grew increasingly complex and intriguing until he was universally regarded as one of the major composers of his day, praised by Telemann, Bononcini and Mattheson, among others. Later generations have considered him, along with Handel, the direct precursor of Gluck. The charming flute sonatas recorded here are familiar early works. Born in 1686, Marcello died in 1739.

The year 2005 marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Carissimi (1605–1674), one of the leading composers of the early Italian Baroque, exceeded in fame only by Monteverdi himself. Carissimi was particularly admired for his oratorios. His entire artistic legacy would have been lost when the Jesuit College in Rome was looted in 1773, if copies had not been kept by his pupils – more than two generations of prominent musicians who had made his works and his style known in Italy and the world.

Various composers

Largely forgotten today, Marco Enrico Bossi was born in Brescia, Italy in 1861 and became a widely admired organist, teacher and composer. Many of his works feature the organ, including a major organ concerto (Op. 100), but he also produced five operas, an oratorio on Joan of Arc, and the beautiful Requiem Mass, Op. 83. Bossi died tragically at sea in 1925 while returning to Italy from the U.S., where he had performed on the famous Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia.

Born in Vicenza in 1963, Enrico Zanovello teaches at the Verona Conservatory, and since 1990 has acted as conductor and harpsichordist for the Archicembalo Ensemble. He is frequently invited to inaugurate newly restored historical and modern instruments. He has made several previous CDs and concertized widely in Europe, South America, the U.S. and Egypt. This album, featuring historic organs of his native region in Italy, has already won a prize from Organ Magazine in Belgium.
