• The magnificent series of complete Bach cantatas by Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque is crowned here with their definitive recording of Bach’s greatest choral work, the Passion According to St. Matthew, available both as an audio CD recording and a DVD video • The musical Passion, a form introduced in Protestant churches on Good Friday by about 1700, was brought to its highest point of perfection by Bach in this work, first performed in 1727 • Under Bach, the Passion performances became the musical highpoint of the church year in Leipzig. He appears to have composed five Passions, but only two survive. In any case, even in his day the St. Matthew Passion was universally regarded as the greatest of them • The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, founded in 1979 by Ton Koopman, is a group of musicians from all over the world with a particular passion for the Baroque. • Famous to the world as one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century, Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886–1954) preferred to be thought of as a composer • He wrote three symphonies in all, the First being the longest. Due to his doubts about its viability, it was never performed in his lifetime • George Alexander Albrecht has become one of the most versatile conductors of his generation. He was awarded the Gustav-MahlerGoldmedaille in 1985 for his performances of the complete works of Mahler and is the author of the book Die Symphonien Gustav Mahlers • Albrecht has put great effort into performing seldom-played works, including the compositions of Wilhelm Furtwängler, whose symphonies he is editing as the president of the Furtwängler Society. The Requiem is Fauré’s most famous composition, an exquisitely beautiful work that takes a serene and comforting view of death. The Cantique de Jean Racine is an early choral work, and the Messe Basse a short Mass written about 1880. A native of New Zealand, Ross Pople studied at the Paris Conservatory and at age 26 was invited by Sir Colin Davis and Pierre Boulez to be principal cellist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the youngest ever in the history of the orchestra. The orchestral work Taras Bulba describes in music the fate of the Cossack leader Taras Bulba as it is told in Nicolai Gogol’s patriotic novella. Janácˇek’s final opera, From the House of the Dead, follows the plot of Dostoyevsky’s eponymous tale. The orchestral suite is an uncompromising staging of the work’s atmosphere in the imaginary theater of the listener’s head. Not long after the end of World War I, in early 1920, Janácˇek wrote his Ballad of Blaník, which is based on a poem of the same name. Christian Arming first conducted the Janácˇek Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995, at only 24 years of age. In 1996 he was appointed director of the orchestra there and thus became the youngest Austrian orchestra director.

Dmitri Shostakovich expressed a life-long interest in Jewish folk music and would draw to himself some of the most talented Jewish composers and musicians living in the Soviet Union. The present program explores the chamber music of Shostakovich and his “Jewish circle.” Contemporary to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio is the Piano Trio of Shostakovich’s friend, Mieczyslaw Weinberg. It is therefore little wonder that some of the two composers’ works exhibit certain similarities. However, we should remember that not only was Weinberg influenced by Shostakovich, but also vice versa. Another of Shostakovich’s Jewish friends was the composer Alexander Weprik, a gifted musician who had been a repeated target of anti-Semitic purges.

• Born in a village just outside Vienna, Hans Gál (1890–1987) was one of the many artists with Jewish connections displaced by the Nazi regime • As a composer and conductor in Vienna in the 1920s and ‘30s he had established a fine reputation and began writing numerous chamber works • In 1929 Gál became director of the Mainz Conservatory, but was forced out of his post by the Nazis in 1933. • Mozart was just eight years old when he wrote this set of six sonatas “which can be accompanied either by a violin or a traverse flute” and dedicated on the printed score to “Her Majesty Charlotte, Queen of Great Britain” • The sonatas were the result of the boy composer’s first trip to London with his father Leopold, after having already published two previous sets of sonatas in Paris • It was on this journey that young Mozart “relaxed” by writing his first symphony. From his early works (among which there are the sonatas on this CD) to his last cantatas, Benedetto Marcello’s compositions grew increasingly complex and intriguing until he was universally regarded as one of the major composers of his day, praised by Telemann, Bononcini and Mattheson, among others. Later generations have considered him, along with Handel, the direct precursor of Gluck. The charming flute sonatas recorded here are familiar early works. Born in 1686, Marcello died in 1739.

The year 2005 marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Carissimi (1605–1674), one of the leading composers of the early Italian Baroque, exceeded in fame only

by Monteverdi himself. Carissimi was particularly admired for his oratorios. His entire artistic legacy would have been lost when the Jesuit College in Rome was looted in 1773, if copies had not been kept by his pupils – more than two generations of prominent musicians who had made his works and his style known in Italy and the world.

Various composers

Largely forgotten today, Marco Enrico Bossi was born in Brescia, Italy in 1861 and became a widely admired organist, teacher and composer. Many of his works feature the organ, including a major organ concerto (Op. 100), but he also produced five operas, an oratorio on Joan of Arc, and the beautiful Requiem Mass, Op. 83. Bossi died tragically at sea in 1925 while returning to Italy from the U.S., where he had performed on the famous Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia.

Born in Vicenza in 1963, Enrico Zanovello teaches at the Verona Conservatory, and since 1990 has acted as conductor and harpsichordist for the Archicembalo Ensemble. He is frequently invited to inaugurate newly restored historical and modern instruments. He has made several previous CDs and concertized widely in Europe, South America, the U.S. and Egypt. This album, featuring historic organs of his native region in Italy, has already won a prize from Organ Magazine in Belgium.

Although Dvorˇák is more widely known for his symphonic and chamber works today, he considered opera his real forte, and wrote numerous stage works. Their international fame has been limited because of the Czech language, but Rusalka, his most popular opera, is so great that singers consider it worth the effort to learn. It contains “The Song to the Moon,” one of the most gorgeous soprano arias ever written, but the rest of the music is just as enchanting and should be heard by every opera fan. This is the only budget release of the opera. A great cast headed by superstar soprano Teresa Stratas.
